Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Most of these hi-end Paso Rhone blends: you know exactly how they are going to smell, you know exactly how they are going to taste, and–by and large–you know exactly the kind of people who drink them. With that said, this one hits a bit different. First of all–from several recent tastings–CDP at 15-5 is now the norm, so I’m allowing my mind to NOT hold that against hi-proof Paso bottles. But…

We are almost to the best time of the year, and no, I don’t mean the holidays (though we love the holiday season as much as the next guy.) But, in the Cogill household, we are almost to Oscar season, when the films you want to see arrive in theaters. And, with this, the wine pairings we have been most excited to try. The movies are often thought-provoking, impactful, and powerful, much like the…

tell me about joe and booker's brotherhood 🤩
lol my fav two boys, ooh it’s been a while since i did hc post so what better way to get back to it
literally the dumbest when theyre together
always with inside jokes that don’t even make sense when you’re in on the joke, but that doesn’t stop them from laughing like guys who have definitely had too much to drink
the most obnoxious people about soccer you will ever meet, nicky has learned to avoid the topic with joe unless he’s somehow in the mood to discuss every reason why that team didn’t win in that one game that was like 70 years ago, please joe let it go
booker is the only other person who just like gets what joe is talking about when discussing soccer, they all found this out sometime in the early 1900s when joe makes a comment about some game and booker just jumps in without hesitation to everyones surprise
however it also started an argument that left them without silverware until their next shopping trip
they’ve also since banned eating baked potatoes during soccer nights because it will end up on the ceiling, no one knows how but it will happen and the others refuse to help scrape it off again
can lie their way out of any situation, booker and joe were once able to convince a man they were twins and they’ve been unstoppable since
and have also since learned to play confused tourists at the drop of a hat if they think they’ve been made, they’re not even speaking a real language but it worked didn’t it andy?
have definitely played lovers at some point or another just because they’re at some fancy party, nicky is set up on the neighboring roof, andy is nowhere to be found and thus began their personas of: pierre and ramzi, a couple who run their own vineyard in the south of france and are the weirdest people you’ll ever meet
this is not the last appearance they make over the years
their first outing as pierre and ramzi is memorialized in a picture of them from the party, booker wrote on the frame “first time in prague together on our 10th anniversary” followed by a disgusting amount of hearts (nicky secretly treasures the photo)
joe has successfully hidden behind booker when andy comes looking for him, because who the fuck filled an entire suitcase with just books, joe you were only supposed to back essentials
she has no idea there’s another bag under the bed
book club
nile joins when she joins the guard and half expects it as a joke but they take it very seriously, there’s wine and sandwiches, cookies if you want too nile (joe lets booker get away with his attempts at sneaking whiskey into his wine - the man gives zero fucks about what he puts in his body)
they switch off recommending books and like to choose one from an author who’s from wherever they’re at now or wherever they’re going next
nile realizes she has some serious learning to do when she finds out many of their selections aren’t in english
joe laughs at and appreciates bookers attempts to read arabic, he’s getting better

(Sorry for going through your tags and liking practically everything. I just watched the Old Guard last night after seeing all your posts about it. Loved it!) A plot bunny that came to me and you can have it is picturing the four staring into mirrors and repeating facts about themselves, their birth names, their birth place and year, their parents etc. So that they dont forget them over the centuries even as they have to modernize everything about themselves.
He looks at himself in the mirror one morning, Joe still asleep in their bed behind him, and starts the recitation he must sometimes do.
“My name is Nicolo di Genova,” he mutters to himself, turning on the faucet. “I was born in the Republic of Genoa in summertime, God’s Year 1070. My parents were Domenico and Elisabetta di Genova, and we lived in a house by the Porto. My brothers were Matteo and Pietro. My sisters were -- " he pauses, crosses himself, sees her face as if through a glass darkly, her delight in telling him her secret -- “Caterina, magistra of Salerno, Magdalena, Margarita, and Innocenta who died in the cradle, God rest her. I lived there. I walked its streets. I knew them.”
Nicky finishes his shaving, crawls back into bed, and whispers, “And I love a man named Yusuf.”
“Eh?” Joe stirs, adorably rumpled. “What?”
“Nothing.” Nicky kisses his ear. “Go back to sleep.”
***
The next few mornings later, however, it’s Joe’s turn.
“My name is Yusuf ibn Umar al-Kaysani,” he says to his solemn reflection. “I was born in Cairo, under the Fatimid caliphate, in the month before Ramadan, in the year 461 al-Hijra. My father was Umar ibn Ismail al-Kaysani, and my mother was Maryam bint Tariq ibn Khaled al-Katibi. My brothers by the same mother were Umar, Muhammad, Musa, and Ismail, and my sister was Noor. I was a faris, and I sometimes wished I was a scholar.”
He looks at himself, his face in the mirror, exactly as it was almost a thousand years ago, and does not know what else to say. He inclines his head to his reflection, crawls back into bed, pulls the sleeping Nicky back into his arms, and whispers with a smile into his shoulder, “And I fell in love with an Italian.”
***
Booker’s recitation is quieter.
My name is Sebastien le Livre, it goes, and it pops up at unexpected moments. I’ve always been called by some variant of it as a nickname. Now it’s Booker. I was born in 1777. I was twelve years old when they stormed the Bastille, sixteen when they guillotined the king and told us that we were free of monarchical tyranny forever, a great Republic, and I was twenty-seven when Napoleon Bonaparte became emperor and I went to war.
My father was named Jacques. My mother was named Emilie.
We lived just outside of Paris.
My wife. It alarms him to realize he’s starting to lose the precise shape of her smile, her hands in his hair, the taste of her mouth. Come back to me, he wants to beg. Come back to me, Marie.
My sons. My sons. My sons.
(It hurts to even think their names.)
***
Andy tries once, in the dark of the night when the pain of missing Quynh gets too much. Stands up and stares at herself, and really does her best to remember.
My father was...
What was his name? She barely knew him. A gruff and energetic Scythian warlord, almost indivisible from the fine-grained sands of memory. Some rattles that might have been him talking to her, correcting her grip on an ax. He saw no need for daughters to be less than sons in defending the house. At least for a time. She thanks him for that, at least.
My mother, Andy thinks. Surely she must remember that. Her name. Her face. Her gentle smile (was it gentle? She was a Scythian woman, no tender nursemaid, and raised her daughters with axes and hammers in their hands as much as spindle or distaff). My mother...
It’s there. She’ll remember it, she promises, tomorrow. She will.
My sisters....
There were several of them. Four? Was it five? She has a faint memory of running through a vineyard, trampling the vines, and being afraid of punishment. They ran, they hid, they giggled in desperate delight at their own nerve. My sisters.
(She can’t remember their faces.)
(She isn’t sure she can still remember their names.)

Alone or apart from a celebratory trio, Firestone Walker Brewing releases 25th Anniversary blend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Press Release
Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker today unveiled “25”—a tour de force blend of five barrel-aged beers, created with the help of local winemakers to mark the brewery’s 25th anniversary year.
Additionally, for the first time ever, Firestone Walker’s Anniversary Ale is being released in tandem with a limited Anniversary Trio Pack featuring “25” as well as two component ales—2021 Parabola Autumn Edition and 2021 Stickee Monkee.
“This is a beer that truly rises to the occasion of our 25th anniversary,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It represents many of the core elements that have made our brewery what it is today: exceptionally talented people, innovation, barrels, hard work, patience and beautiful beers.”
“25” and the Anniversary Trio Pack are now rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets, and are also available at the brewery’s locations in Paso Robles, Buellton and Venice. “25” comes as an individually boxed 12-ounce bottle accompanied by extensive brewmaster notes. The boxed trio pack features one 12-ounce bottle each of “25,” Parabola Autumn Edition and Stickee Monkee.
Masterfully Blended
On July 15, 2021 an all-star cast of Paso Robles winemakers convened at the brewery for an annual summer rite: the blending of Firestone Walker’s next Anniversary Ale. They broke into teams to create their own preferred blends from five barrel-aged component ales, then voted as a group on the winning blend.
The result is “25”—a masterwork of flavor and complexity, blended from five distinct ales aged in bourbon, brandy and tequila barrels.
Firestone Walker’s collaboration with local winemakers dates back to 2006, when Brynildson was tasked with creating the inaugural Anniversary Ale to mark the brewery’s 10th anniversary year.
“We started with just a few barrels of beer and a few of our closest winemaker friends, and the result was the most complex and interesting beer we had ever made—ultimately sparking the longest and strongest collaboration we have participated in,” Brynildson said. “They outdid themselves this year, and I couldn’t be happier with ‘25’—it’s an absolutely beautiful beer.”
“25”: The Final Blend
Winemakers from the following Paso Robles wineries participated in this year’s blending: Booker Vineyard, Desparada Wines, Epoch Estate Wines, Halter Ranch Vineyard, Herman Story, Ledge Vineyards, Tablas Creek Vineyard, TH Estate Wines, Thacher Winery and Torrin Wine.
For the first time, the winemakers were joined by two members of Firestone Walker’s Brewmaster’s Collective beer club, who won the chance to participate in the blending session. Russell From of Herman Story Wines and Taylor Mathiesen of Booker Vineyard, along with Brewmaster’s Collective club member Paul Rios (with guest Christian Smith), created the winning blend that became “25.”
Parabola Autumn Edition - Aged in Bourbon Barrels (41%) Russian Imperial Stout
Tequila Barrel Merkin - Aged in Bourbon Barrels (28%) Milk Stout
Brandy Barrel Barley Wine - Aged in Brandy Barrels (13%) Blonde Barley Wine
Stickee Monkee - Aged in Bourbon Barrels (10%) Central Coastal Quad
Whiskey Barrel Wheat Wine - Aged in Tequila Barrels (8%) Strong Golden Barley Wine

Me: thinking about TOG restaurant AU
Somm!Booker’s favorite wine would be a Côte Rôtie (in particular the Marie et Pierre Bénetière Dolium) and when asked about what wine he would “match” to each of his coworkers he says Nile is a viognier (bc of my shipper heart) but look it’s basically saying he thinks Nile is pretty with real substance but he’s also saying Nile could be a delicious addition to his life ajsjdhddjjd SIR STOP.
Viognier
Floral, aromatic white grape variety, with the finest examples coming from Condrieu AOC (yellow circle in diagram), which is just beneath Côte Rôtie in the Northern Rhône.
Condrieu AOC permits only 100% viognier white wines, the wines here come from very steep vineyards (50 degrees even!). The vineyards are located on terraces carved into the southern facing slopes of granite rock. The wine is highly perfumed with delicate floral notes and stone fruit aromas, with medium acidity.
Côte Rôtie
Côte Rôtie tends to be made out of the Syrah grape, though a blend of up to 20% viognier (usually <5% though) permitted to add the floral aromas. It is a very dark and tannic wine, and in hot climates can become a very jammy, overpowering wine. In the Côte Rôtie we find the most elegant expressions of this wine due to the colder climate (it is the northernmost region of where this grape varietal can grow), and the wines require long bottle aging to fully develop. It’s a very hyped wine, with prices to match, but the unique combination of terroir can’t be replicated by the other regions that grow this grape. This is a brutal wine to make and yet the difficulty is what makes it so special. To wit, this description, which makes me think of our boy: “Côte Rôtie is a excellent wine, and totally unique, but not far off from being a complete disaster.”
As a side note, our boy Booker attended the Lyceé hôtelier de l’Hermitage, which contributes to his preference for his “home” region of Rhône Valley wines. Maybe he did a stint in Australia, because Australia is a major producer of Syrah wines but also bc I love me an Aussie shoutout but also a lot of young French people do go to Australia to study wine for the dynamism I guess maybe they want more sun too idk but they do!! They do go to Aus for whatever reason.

WIP folder 📒
I’ve had a bit of a rough writing time lately, so I banned myself from Tumblr for a bit and when I came back, I had so many lovely people tag me to share the WIPs I currently have! Thank you so much @haztobegood @runaway-train-works @jacaranda-bloom @bitter-leaf and @so-why-let-your-voice-be-tamed; you’re all so wonderful! 💕
Right. So. Here we go.
Fests/exchanges/etc
I’m bad at remembering what should be anon and what shouldn’t, sooooo. Apologies.
🎄 @1dchristmasfest
I’ve got a lovely office AU Ziam fic for this, featuring awkward, drunk, impromptu stripper Zayn, and pining Liam. Good shit.
⛓ @hlkinkexchange
So there’s no emoji that combines intricate and beautiful leatherwork, a vineyard, isolated Harry and enthusiastic Louis, and a master at his craft. So, have some chains instead. You all get it.
👑 @hlroyaltyfest
This fic involves social media, a fandom, and Louis having no idea that his online friend Harry is Prince Harry, and falling in love with him anyway. I am EXCITED.
🎮 @larrygamingfest
I am BEYOND keen for this fic. I’m writing a Bioshock Infinite AU with Louis as Booker’s character and Harry as Elizabeth’s, but changing up some things to create my own little twists and plot lines. I’m including some extra stuff from the original Bioshocks, and I’m BLOODY excited. She’s gonna be a doozy and a half, and a monster.
👮🏻‍♂️ @onedirectionbigbang
My FAVOURITE WIP. My Ziam Miss Congeniality AU that I’ve been working on forever. It’s gonna be massive, and have more crime-based, more tension and danger and protectiveness, more everything than the original. I can’t fucking wait for you all to read it.
Sequels
WIPs I currently have that extend from any of my current fics!
✨ The Lone Hygrangea sequel
This focuses basically on Ziam, because Zayn wasn’t in TLH and I was desperate to put him in. The story wrote itself. Tattoo artist/wizard Zayn who works for Niall at a tattoo parlour that does both wizarding and muggle tattoos. Liam as the teacher whose best friend just started dating that lovely florist next door to Niall’s shop. I had this planned as I was writing the original one.
⚡️ Just As Fast, Twice As Dangerous sequel
Another sequel I was dying to write as I was writing the original. Ziam dealing with Zayn’s powers and moving forward in their relationship. I love writing in this universe. Empath Zayn is my favourite Zayn I’ve written.
Other fics
🎙 Meet & Greet AU
A Ziam fic based on a snippet I wrote recently from a prompt from @ltwalls2020 🥰 where Zayn takes his sister to Liam’s M&G and they...vibe. I’ve always wanted to write a f/nf, and I already love this so much.
💈Barber AU
Often egged on by @larryscurves for this one, but it’s actually almost done! I’ve just had to put it aside for a sec. Barber Liam has the shop next to florist Zayn, and they DO NOT get along, aside from the mass amounts of sexual tension. Featuring a very tension-heavy scene with a straight razor. There’s a lil’ snippet here!
🥘YouTube cooking channel AU
This is based on the channel Sorted Food, which five British best friends who cook, have challenges, and are the funniest arseholes ever. Two of them are trained chefs, the other three are just normal. It’s my favourite YouTube channel, and if you know it, let me know, and I’ll tell you who’s based on who. I’ve obviously made it super gay, though. Featuring Larry and Ziam! And Niall, obviously.
💍 Event Coordinator AU
I have been writing this fic for YEARS. Literally. It started as a different fandom. All you need to know is that it’s head chef Harry, who works for a catering company that specialises in corporate (or boring) events and hates it, and event coordinator Louis with a flair for creativity and individuality. Features sous chef Liam, florist Zayn (fuck me, I love a good florist fic, hey? Can you tell I used to be one?), audio tech Niall, numerous venues around London, sexuality exploration, and saving each other. IT’S SOME GOOD SHIT if I do say so myself. I hope you all love her, she’s my baby. She won’t be around for a while yet, though.
🌎 Bodyguard fic
Mar needs to stop sending me prompts because they’re all pure gold. This one is Ziam, new but still started the outline. Liam is hired as Zayn’s bodyguard when him and his colleagues are threatened, which is made complicated by the fact that Zayn is an interpreter for the UN, and these guys mean serious business. Also made complicated by the fact that they have history, but not the kind you’d expect.
🌈 Queer chorus AU
Based on the adult choir I joined a couple of years ago! It has friends Harry and Zayn not knowing quite where they belong, Niall helping them feel safe and welcome, and accompanist Liam and musical director Louis who make it feel like home. Full of lots of big, queer feelings, music, and absolutely falling in love. Aw yessss.
And a couple of other bits and pieces :)
Um, okay, so I feeeeel like lots of people have been tagged, but I tag @forreveries @lululawrence @allwaswell16 @laynefaire @ferricadooza @2tiedships2 @hogwartzlou @wallstagram and anyone else who wants to do it!

It comes amid a busy week for the Duchess, who has had a jam-packed schedule in the past few days. Yesterday she attended a Poetry Together event, where she recited the humourous Matilda Who Told Lies, And Was Burned To Death by Hilaire Belloc, by memory. And on Wednesday she attended a tea reception for the Booker Prize Foundation, as well as making an appearance alongside the Queen to mark 750th anniversary of Westminster Abbey.

Fulldraw Vineyard Winery and Tasting Room, CA
Fulldraw Vineyard Winery and Tasting Room, CA, Paso Robles Building, Clayton Korte Images
Fulldraw Vineyard Winery in Paso Robles
Apr 6, 2022
Design: Clayton Korte
Location: 2660 Anderson Road, Paso Robles, California 93446, USA
Fulldraw Vineyard Winery and Tasting Room
Fulldraw Vineyard is located within the Templeton Gap AVA, the heart of California’s Central Coast wine country. Set on 100 acres of established vineyards, the land is characterized by its rich limestone soils and cool maritime climate—the perfect setting for growing Rhone-style varietals. Tucked into the rolling terrain, the winery is accessed via a long, looping drive that takes visitors through the vineyards before arriving at their destination. The proprietors, Connor and Rebecca McMahon, tasked Clayton Korte with designing a winery that represents their personality and passion for winemaking. The solution is a winery that is familiar yet exclusive, comfortable yet sophisticated—seemingly disparate ideas that come together through a visitor experience that is as curated as it is intimate.
Developed in two phases the winery complex consists of three buildings: a fermentation building and chilled barrel storage cellar both completed in 2019, plus a hospitality building. Indoors and out, the facilities provide a direct connection to the surrounding scenic landscape, as each of buildings overlooks the vineyard and the region. The two new structures are situated parallel to one another and shifted slightly in opposite directions to provide each with access to views and daylight. The use of simple forms along with honest materials and textures help break down the scale of the buildings to fit within its context.
The first phase consists of the 7,288 square foot fermentation building, a 2,714 square foot covered crush pad, administrative and employee spaces, and a 2,176 square foot barrel aging and case goods storage area. Responding to site topography and climatic influences of sun and prevailing breezes, the steel-framed building houses open-air fermentation spaces that foster cross-ventilation, utilize night cooling, and provide well-lit working environments with ample natural daylight. Interior and exterior materials are clean-lined while resilient. An integrated roof mounted photovoltaic system will minimize future reliance on utility-provided energy. The simple configuration will support and help facilitate production and flexible experimentation of balanced Rhone-style wines with an annual production capacity of 10,000 cases at full build-out. The new facilities mirror the existing durable exterior material palette, including painted and weathered steel, burnished concrete masonry bearing walls, and fiber cement cladding.
Expanding the Fulldraw Winery campus, the new 3,918 square foot hospitality building includes areas for a variety of tasting experiences, both indoors and out to provide an intimate connection to the surrounding scenic landscape, overlooking both Fulldraw and Booker Vineyards. The main tasting room space connects to a private lounge / wine library holding past and future vintages, restroom, back-of-house and private administration office areas.
A low slung, human-scaled structure, the tasting room sits beside the winery on the north edge of a small plateau, leveraging the vineyard views to the north and west. As with the existing winery, an exterior material palate includes painted and weathered steel, burnished concrete masonry bearing walls, and fiber cement cladding, chosen for their resilience outdoors. Naturally expressive materials like wood, stone and concrete are used on the interior where warmth and human touch become more important. Stretched forms and repetitive material textures help mediate the large scale of the site and winery. In this way, the tasting room becomes an instrument to pull the guest’s attention away from the noise of everyday life and focuses it on the incredible landscape and flavors of the Fulldraw Vineyard lineup. Fulldraw is rich; a place where the craft and culture of wine is expressed through the experience of land, place, and the intimacy of friends sharing memories.

This is a must-experience winery producing small-lot, award-winning Rhône-inspired blends + Syrahs for serious wine drinkers. You feel + taste the owners’/winemakers' passion, their dedication to their craft. Meet Anita + Varinder + savor their words; Passionate curiosity started us on this wine journey. Tireless effort got us here. A sense of awe keeps us humble. Gratitude makes it real. "KISMET (Fate or Destiny): Life's path is seldom straight. You move forward, then back, then side-to-side + somehow, forward again. For us, it all started in Chicago + Indianapolis, when hours of getting to know one another turned into years. There was a shy glass of Provençal rosé, which led to a serious Grand Cru from Burgundy, that then took us to an opulent line-up of wines from Booker Vineyard that changed our life... No matter what came before, or how it all unfolded, it was momentous. There can be a million reasons to not do something, but in the end, there only needs to be 1 powerful reason to move forward. It simply feels right. It's kismet, our paths converged, we traveled to Paso + we’ve not looked back since. COMING HOME: The running leaps we have taken since those 1st moments in Paso have led us to COPIA. We desired to make the very best wine we could from the very best grapes we could find + grow. We found our special place in 2017: 50 acres of paradise-on-earth in the Willow Creek District that made us feel that we were coming home. Breathtakingly beautiful slopes, calcareous soils + strong marine influence made it an ideal site for us to plant our vineyard. We feel that this is a very special place + it is going to allow us to produce the kind of world-class wine that we are passionate about. GRATITUDE: This could be a lucid dream, but the wine stains on our hands make it all too real. If this is a lucid dream...then we'll stay sleeping. Thanks for sharing in our journey, Anita + Varinder." Enjoy warm, 1st class hospitality at their elegantly modern, downtown tasting room, new WINE LOUNGE. Jeb Dunnuck, a top wine critic, reported on Copia's inaugural vintage: “… if these 1st releases are any indication, the future is very bright for this team.” (at Copia Vineyards) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb-UbY0L915/?utm_medium=tumblr

How Paso Robles Is Taking Sustainable Wine to the Next Level
Vintners in this beautiful part of the Central Coast, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, are committed to growing grapes that produce high-quality wine that is reflective of the land and the sustainable efforts they employ. Winemakers, farmers, and winery owners across the region use practices that aim to protect the environment, support social responsibility, and encourage soil conservation. As California’s largest and most diverse wine region, this wine community acts as stewards of the land to ensure that it is healthy for generations to come.
Sustainability in Practice
Shale Oak Winery just off of Highway 46 West is one of Paso Robles’ top destinations for wine lovers who enjoy award-winning small-batch wine. What visitors might now learn about the winery as they sip a glass of Cabernet on the expansive outdoor patio is its commitment to sustainability in every aspect of the business.
Shale Oak follows the strict Sustainability in Practice (SIP) guidelines by meeting high standards in sustainable development, including water savings, energy efficiency, and materials selection. SIP is one of the wine industry’s oldest third-party verification programs that ensures that a wine, winery, or vineyard implements strict sustainable winemaking and wine-growing standards. A nonprofit organization of 300 farmers promoting sustainable wine-growing called the Vineyard Team manages the SIP program. Beginning in 1994, the Vineyard Team has become an internationally recognized leader in the sustainability movement.
“Our area has a long history of collaboration, education, and outreach on sustainable wine-growing practices,” said Beth Vukmanic, the program director of the Vineyard Team. “Today, we help consumers shop their values with SIP Certified wines, made with care for the people and planet.”
Farmers in drought-prone regions like Paso Robles know how precious water is to the area. Shale Oak uses special vegetation ditches to collect rainwater, allowing it to percolate back into the ground. Any runoff water is used for irrigation. Almost no rainwater leaves the property.
But Shale Oak’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond the vineyard. Designers built the tasting room to Gold LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) certification. Solar panels generate about one-third of the winery’s energy needs, huge windows and sun tubes eliminate most of the need for daytime energy, and tasting menus are made not only with recyclable paper, but have wildflower seeds embedded into the paper for guests to plant at home.
“As a winemaker it is important for me to work in harmony with the Earth as we only have one,” said winemaker Curtis Hascall. “I want my children to be able to experience the beauty of the world the way that I have been fortunate to experience.”
Organic Farming
Organic farming is a method of farming that uses organic fertilizers such as compost manure, green manure, and bone meal and emphasis techniques such as crop rotation and companion planting.
While Eric Jensen, owner and winemaker of Booker Winery, has ensured organic farming in his fields for the past 15 years, it was only recently that he saw the merit in official certification. In April 2021, the boutique producers of Rhône-style red blends and Cabernet Sauvignon cult wines announced its 60-acre estate vineyard received status as an official California Certified Organic Farmer, the leading organic certificate in North America. The certification process requires a minimum of three years of documentation of all on-farm practices and applications.
One of the main components of organic farming is the exclusion of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides. As such, Booker Winery farmers do not use synthetic chemicals anywhere on the estate. Instead of spraying chemicals that would negatively impact soil health, farmers use a Clemens weed knife to remove weeds from under the grapevines, and instead of spraying chemical insecticides, they use drones to distribute beneficial insects to eat the resident insects that can be harmful to grapevines.
“I think it is important to note that we in the farming industry have incredible power in our jobs to turn back the clock on climate change,” said Hillary Graves, vineyard manager for Booker Winery. “We have a responsibility to do our work in a way that protects our environment while providing a safe and healthy workplace for our team and our customers at the same time. It’s a win-win!”
Regenerative farming
Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) is a new certification that meets the very highest standards for soil health, animal welfare, and the social welfare of farm workers. A group of farmers, business leaders, and experts in soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness created the Regenerative Organic Certified program in 2017.
“The certification tells your neighbors, consumers, and the industry as a whole that you farm in the most responsible way possible, the animals on the property are treated exceptionally well, and that all workers are paid, at minimum, living wages,” said Jordan Lonborg viticulturist at Tablas Creek Vineyard, the area’s first Regenerative Organic Certified estate vineyard.
Jason Haas of Tablas Creek Vineyard
Down the road from Tablas Creek, Robert Hall Winery is finishing the first year of a three-year study to understand regenerative farming effects on the vineyards’ ability to sequester carbon and overall quality effects on soil, fruit, and wine. The results of the study will be shared with the wine community as a whole. Once a month the winery hosts a Field Day inviting members of the wine community for a hands-on educational experience in the vineyard.
“This is a transparent initiative that is open to all of our community,” said Robert Hall Winery’s managing director Caine Thompson. “We hope that growers can utilize these learnings, tools, and build the confidence to try regenerative farming on their own vineyards.”
What does this all mean for the wine drinker?
Yes, saving the planet is always a nice goal, but what do all these eco-conscious farming practices mean for the wine drinker? For one, it helps shape a wine’s sense of terroir. Vineyards that are farmed organically without the aid of chemical fertilizers are likely to have a deeper root system in the soil as the vines search for all their necessary nutrients.
“The soil is likely to be more vibrantly alive with microorganisms, which translates into complexity of flavors,” said Jason Haas, general manager of Tablas Creek Winery.
As the wine community of Paso Robles continues to commit themselves to producing sustainably produced wines, they trust the wine quality will be higher as well.
“We believe that sustainable growing will provide an overall better product than conventional farming,” Hascall said. “It also provides the consumer peace of mind that they’re supporting a company that seeks a better future for the world.”
