I work at a library and the other week we found a possum in the bookdrop
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Little guy was so cute but probably scared and confused out of his mind lol. A staff member took him home on their lunch break and released him in the woods so at least he's not stuck trying to survive in the city anymore
I don't understand how USAmericans don't appreciate possums more, what do you MEAN "vermin" what do you MEAN you run them over on purpose. What the fuck is wrong with you

Sometimes art is inspired by random dvds I pull out of the bookdrop at work. This is one such case. I never want to freehand plaid ever again.

I saw someone else posted a 'wild day at the library' story so here goes: I used to work at the central branch of my city's public library system, and the book drop there goes into a small room under street level that we would go get all the returned books from before opening for the day. So one day, someone decided to 'return' a snake to us. (a small and probably harmless garden snake, but nonetheless completely out of its element downtown.) After the person who was assigned to clear bookdrops came running back to relay the presence of the snake to everyone, book retrieval was called off until animal control got the snake off the premises and hopefully returned it to a better environment. I was off that day and I was so mad I missed out on experiencing the events live with my coworkers. A lot of other interesting things happened during my time there, but none approached that level.

Blue Devil #7
Congrats Dan, you've officially destroyed Marla's car.
Again, I want to know how tf he got out that far without realizing 'Shit, this is too small and with my horns dragging on things I can't handle it like I used to, so MAYBE I NEED A CAR WITH MORE SPACE or to NOT BE THE ONE DRIVING' but I think it's safe to say that part of Dan just generally being a disaster is his tendency to try to stubborn his way through things.
....
10/10 Dan was probably one of those kids or teens who got himself stuck in a bookdrop or a laundry chute because he tried to see if he could squeeze through on a dare and severely underestimated how much he would not fit.

hmmm have you ever seen a famous person in public?
no but i would say the closest i have come is the time at work when i was getting the bookdrop outside this car came up with a Saint Bernard and I jokingly asked if his name was Beethoven and the owner was like “no but he’s a grandson of his”

Horror For the Holidays, October 1st
Today, we'll start with a personal ghost story. Sort of.
Hawaii has quite a few ghost stories, if you ask around. But what you might notice is how casual a lot of them are. "Oh yeah, that place haunted, brah. Lots of people see it. No worries." It's just perfectly normal to expect in some places you'll encounter some of the weirdest shit you'd expect to see in a horror movie. You just try to take sensible precautions with some of it, the same way you would a high-crime area.
The library I work in has one of these casual hauntings. It's not a constant thing, and a fair number of people just laugh at it when the old-timers talk about it. And hey, I'm an old-timer now, and I've seen a few things! So let me share.
We call the ghost "Vicky." This is because a janitor we had once reported seeing a woman in a white, victorian-type dress standing by the shelves early one morning. Like a lot of ghosts out here, she had no feet. Now, he's the only person who's ever seen this, and he was a man who did the drugs of the band scene he was also in. And the kind of guy who would just talk story, so there's potential bullshit there. But hey, had to call it something, right? And honestly, it's a little less scary if you have a persona and name for your ghost.
We'd have periods of activity, with little things going missing or moving around. Odd glitches. One of the warning signs would be the security gate randomly going off with no one standing near it. Another was that this one travel book in the reference section would just up and disappear. It always reappeared on the shelf within a few months.
All pretty harmless. But it can be a bit spooky to be in the building by yourself. Especially when you hear things banging or footsteps behind you. For awhile, this one printer would just randomly start clicking whenever I was alone doing bookdrop duty or in before anyone else.
The only real problem I've had is occasionally having the sense of someone leaning over my shoulder. There's no sense of anything malicious, but you try keeping your mind on your work when your brain is insisting that there's someone RIGHT THERE WHEN YOU'RE ALONE. Dammit, Vicky!
Back in the day, I'd play CDs. This backfired horribly once when I played some Gaelic Storm, because the presence intensified MASSIVELY. Vicky apparently really likes peppy celtic rock. Who knew? These days, it's usually a selection of youtube playlists when I do bookdrop duty. Just so I don't hear random things in the background to put my hackles up.
I've only seen something in there once. (Aside from little corner-of-the-eye flashes, which I don't count because those can happen anywhere.)
It was early morning, and I was once again in before the janitor (who was starting to come in later and later for personal reasons.) I was getting in super early not to work, but because the bus would be so crowded even a little bit later I couldn't get off on my stop. It was easier to just come in early and spend the hour or so drinking coffee and reading in the breakroom.
So I come in, yeah, once again our janitor is not on duty like he should be. So I open the gate and the one connecting door, then use the bathroom.
The hallway light is on, and I don't bother turning the bathroom light on, because I can see well enough.
Now, the layout is, the break room is where you enter the building. There's a closed door, which leads to a very short hallway containing the staff bathroom and water fountain. Next to the bathroom is the staff workroom, and beyond that, the library. Opposite all this is a heavy sliding glass door leading to the patio garden.
So I'm sitting there, and I hear footsteps in the workroom. Someone wearing rubber slippers. Startling, but not completely concerning by itself. Back then, it was possible to enter the building by unlocking a side door and just walking through the library, so the assumption here would be that the janitor has just arrived and come in this way. Except that's weird, because it would mean he parked by the door I came in, and then walked around the entire building to enter in a non-standard way.
The footsteps walk past the door. And I SEE the shadow of someone passing in the gap under the door. I hear the change of steps on carpet to steps on the tile.
And they stop. The two exits are close by, and very loud, and it's quiet. I would hear someone leaving, and would know which door from the sound. And I hear nothing. Nobody is knocking around the kitchen. Nobody is using the sink. No more footsteps.
I'm weirded out now, and I do a cautious exit, in full anxiety mode. It takes me a few minutes, because I do NOT want to exit and get jumped by something that might be waiting two feet away.
Nobody's there. The janitor has not arrived, and will in fact not arrive for another ten minutes. Ten minutes I spend flipping lights on and checking for an intruder.
Fortunately, this was a work day, not solo bookdrop duty. I might have had real trouble working by myself after that little incident.
It still bothers me, even though it was harmless and nothing else ever happened. As my sister says, potty time is private and it's rude to spook someone using the toilet. And while it's been a long time since I've had anything like that happen in the building, I still can't use that bathroom when I'm there alone unless I keep the door propped open.
Goddammit, Vicky!
