Making Connections: How Daily Thanthi Tamil Matrimonial Ads Can Help You Find Your Soulmate
A large number of people across India book matrimonial ads in newspapers with the objective of finding their perfect partner. As it is well known, the practice of arranged marriages has been a tradition in India since time immemorial, and the matrimonial columns in newspapers is the most commonly chosen method of finding the most suitable partner.
Even as more and more people are choosing to go their own way and find their perfect partners on their own, while others are choosing to find their prospective spouses on online matrimonial sites, many people across the length and breadth of the country still choose to book matrimonial ads in newspapers. Families place a great deal of emphasis on finding the most suitable partners for their sons and daughters. A marriage in Indian culture signifies not just the coming together of the bride and the groom, but also the union of their respective families. This makes it all the more important to make sure the most suitable person is chosen as the spouse-to-be.
For people of the Tamil community, Daily Thanthi is a name that is not just a newspaper, but a hallmark of Tamil language journalism in India. The newspaper was founded by S. P. 175+ non-Western literature recommendations to diversify your academia, organized by continent + country
I love world literature, and I’ve been frustrated by the lack of representation of it in literature + academia communities on tumblr, so here are some recommendations. I haven’t read all of these myself yet, but the ones I have are excellent and the ones I haven’t come highly recommended from Goodreads and are on my to-read list!
With the exception of anthologies of older works, all of these books were written before 2000 (some literally thousands of years earlier), since I’m less familiar with super contemporary literature. Also, I only included each writer once, though many of them have multiple amazing books. I’m sure there are plenty of incredible books I’m missing, so please feel free to add on to this list! And countries that aren’t included absolutely have a lot to offer as well--usually, it was just hard to find books available in English translation (which all of the ones below are.)
List below the cut (it’s my first post with a cut so let’s hope I do it right... and also warning that it’s super long)

Hex Positive, Ep. 021 - Witchcraft and Modern Law
Now available wherever you get your podcasts!
As promised, the followup episode is here! This time, I'm digging into witchcraft as it relates to modern law, plus covering a few key 20th-century events that I missed in Episode 20 and some legal codes that may apply to your practice even if they don't deal with witchcraft directly. We'll also be discussing some instances of modern witch hunts that are still occurring in some parts of the world and there are articles you can check out for more information below. (Massive trigger warning for violence and abuse in the ones discussing modern witch hunts.)
(Incidentally, the information I discovered while researching modern witch persecutions is EXACTLY why I get so cheesed off when some privileged politician whines about being the target of "a witch hunt." Like buddy, you don't even know the meaning of the word. Having to face the consequences of your own actions isn't a witch hunt. That's just cosmic justice serving up a long-overdue headslap.)

5 Reasons You Ain't Jesus or Mary Magdalene
The Birth of Christ is an important holiday for Christians around the world. Yet Christianity too is infiltrated by fake gurus. I’ve been to ashrams in India and sat at the feet of gurus. Met the Dali Lama twice. What I found is very very very few are genuine. The rest are entertainers. Especially if they call themselves Jesus Christ or Mary Magdalene or any Biblical character.
Imagine for a moment there are no new age gurus or Bible miracles, or winged beings with superpowers. Nor mystical world dominations. Imagine that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were real people. Rulers of a couple of empires with a lot of politics and infighting.
Imagine that politics went on for over a millennia. After 1,500 years the bad guys start winning. They rewrite the history books and the Bible and defame your family. The real Jesus and Mary Magdalene and Virgin Mary become mystical new age Bible miracle myths of your blind faith. Every bit of history and archeology that says otherwise into new age mystical fairy dust.
You like the fairy dust, it’s shiny and sparkles. You tell yourself and others you are a descendant of Jesus Christ or Mary Magdalene or the Virgin Mary. Or their physical incarnation, past life regression or psychic channel. You write books about it and speak on podcasts and get your photo on the cover of “Play Guru.”
The fact of history and realty is you aren’t Jesus Christ or Mary Magdalene or the Virgin Mary. You're either conning people or conning yourself. This is not because Jesus and Mary Magdalene didn’t exist. They did exist, but they aren’t who or when or from where or spoke the language that history books and revisionist academics and new age workshops have taught in the last 100 years.
1 Which Jesus and Mary Magdalene?
The Bible’s Jesus and Mary Magdalene were composites of several men and women. There were at least three sets of Jesus and Mary Magdalene and counting. All three Jesus had their Mary Magdalenes and scandalous relationships. Of similar royal ranks and circumstance as each other. Some some from the same families, some not. Some from different eras, a generation, a few hundred and thousands of years apart. The Second Coming happened in the 1st Century AD. The leveling of old Salem and “No stone left unturned.” The other two Jesus and Mary Magdalenes were before that. All real historical people in history books. Which Jesus and Mary Magdalene or Virgin Mary are you talking about?
2 You don’t know their real names.
esus and Mary Magdalene and Virgin Mary weren’t their real names. Magdalene is an imperial royal title, meaning Great. Like Empress Catherine the Great who was assassinated by early Communists in Russia. The Dead Sea Scrolls are fakes, including the Jesus scroll. Tests in museums in Germany and the USA found all Dead Sea Scrolls to be fakes. Fake antiquities to con and launder money is very common. There’s a 20 year gap from the Dead Sea Scrolls’ first discovery to their public release. With the right materials, most art college students can fake antiquities. The Virgin Mother is ancient Egyptian. The letter J didn’t exist until the printing of the King James Bible. A royal title can be any royal. This is why Jesus and the Marys aren't found in ancient records or modern archeology.
3 You don’t know their real religion.
The real people of the Bible weren’t Judaic nor Christian. Christianity wasn't invented yet. And there are no Jewish symbols on old churches or in old master religious art. They aren't recorded in ancient Hebrew texts or even gematria. They were from separate countries with different religions, both polytheistic, multiple gods and goddesses and animals. Jesus and Mary Magdalene to people in their time were philosophers. Christianity was invented later by their relatives as deification memorials. Nowhere in the Bible does it say they were Jewish. There are no Jewish symbols on old or ancient churches. Very few major players in the Bible were Jewish. The original Gospels were written in Greek, Latin and Coptic Egyptian. Hollywood is fiction and why nobody in the Bible can be found in archeology and history books. Everything on closer inspection of the Hollywood and History book versions are dead ends. Fairy dust. Real history doesn't have dead ends.
4 You don’t know their language.
Many royals are taught a symbol and verbal code language as children. It’s a multitasking language with different educational and record keeping uses. Morals and ethics, religion, genealogies, geography, visual cognition, basic history and mythology. And, with academic research, history not in history books. Including ancient global contact and the real Atlantis and Roanoke histories. Old world secret societies, such as the Knights Templar, do know a lot of this stuff, but they won’t disclose it. Real secret societies are sworn to secrecy. Members sign a non-disclosure contract. The same as companies use for inventions and sensitive information. That's why secret societies are secret. The only way to publish the information is to do the research yourself, which takes years. If you do the research you'll find it.
5 You ain’t stealth.
Real Holy Grail Bloodline descendants, those who know who they are, don’t advertise it to the general public. At the most they'll say who their real ancestors are by their ancestors’ real names. They won’t say it’s Jesus and Mary Magdalene, because Jesus and Mary Magdalene of the Bible are composites of multiple people. Real life is complicated. I didn't join a secret society or sign the contract to get the information. I did the research myself! It took many years and a couple of laptops and becoming a keyword geek and art historian. I was taught the clues and secret language as a kid. I didn’t know it until I started this research.
Everybody needs a bit of God, a divine higher power, not an earthly one. Else we become self-entitled assholes. Read the First Commandment of the Bible. It

New Post has been published on Strange Hoot - How To’s, Reviews, Comparisons, Top 10s, & Tech Guide
New Post has been published on https://strangehoot.com/how-to-book-udan-scheme-flight-tickets/
How to book UDAN Scheme flight tickets - UDAN YOJNA
Want to book a flight ticket under UDAN YOJNA?. This blog is for you. Travelling through flights was a luxury high-class symbol and generally rich people used to travel via flights.
But now India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it possible and easy for middle and low-class people to make use of flights at a cheaper cost by launching Udan Yojna in 2017 at Shimla by hosting a flag in the inauguration of regional flights between Delhi and Shimla.
The government’s budget for this scheme was Rs.450 billion. This scheme will operate for 10 years from 2017.
Udan here means “Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik”. this scheme will boost the number by litigating the development of India’s expected target of almost 425 unserved, underserved, underdeveloped regional airports with increasing the regular number of fights.
This scheme contains two components, first- is to develop new airports and improve the already existing regional airports to increase the number of operational airports for scheduled regular flights from 70 to minimum 150 airports from May 2016 till December 2018 (including army airports).
And the second component is to add hundreds of financially viable, capped-airfare, new regional flight routes in order to build a connection between more than 100 underserved and unserved airports in small towns with each other as well as with well-maintained airports in metropolitan cities by adding (VGF) “Viability Gap Funding” as per the requirement.
Some key points of this scheme are:
If you are travelling in the range of 500 km then you are required to pay Rs 2500+ tax, if you are travelling in less than 500 km like 475 km the also you are required to pay Rs 2500+ taxes. On the other hand, if you are travelling above 500 km then you will pay according to Rs 5000+ taxes.
Udan scheme is specially made to connect the regional small airports with less schedules travels and flights with airports of bigger cities.
In this scheme airports of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur, Banaras, Lakhimpur Kheri, Rajasthan’s Bikaner, and Jaisalmer, Gujrat’s Jamnagar and bhavnagar, Jorhat in Assam, Bathinda, and Pathankot in Punjab are included.
In this scheme 50% of the seats in the flights will be fixed for a fare of max Rs 2500 and rest will be according to the market fares.
According to this in fixed-wing airplanes, the time of the journey is estimated to max 1 hour and a half-hour in helicopters.
In case of loss to airlines subsidy will be provided under VGF.
The central government will have to reduce 1% VAT in security and fire fighting services for this scheme.
No landing and parking charges will be applied on these flights.
Generally, if you want to book flight tickets you could follow 3 methods as described under:
1. Online booking
Online booking of flight tickets is the easiest and reliable way for your journey. It takes few minutes and you can book your tickets by comparing prices, baggage weight, deciding your own seats, class, etc by yourself in very little time by just sitting at home from your laptop or phone with online data connection or WIFI.
Many different websites are available online for this purpose like MakeMyTrip, Paytm, goibibo, Redbus, etc. Different offers and discounts are also available online and you can always compare the prices and get the cheapest deal in your hand.
It is always advised to book tickets before a month or so to avail the best prices because prices rise with dates going by.
You can book your meals and add extra baggage and also heck in by sitting at one place only.
No need to hustle and stand in lines like before. Just fill in the details the online sites ask for like dates you want to travel on, personal details like name, sex, and age, etc. Search for coupons if applicable and pay online using your debit/credit cards or NEFT and you will receive your tickets via text message an email.
2. Offline mode
Earlier when the online method was not so common and not available people used to go to the nearest airports and stand in long queues for hours and book tickets in the airport with cash and providing your ids’.
That process used to take a lot of time reading terms and conditions and all processes with the working person there and discounts were also not available. It is not so preferred way now in this online world.
3. Agents
Travel agents used to book tickets for people as people did not know how to operate online and were afraid of frauds and had a resisting sense of doing by themselves.
All you need to do is to give your details to agents and they will pay by their cards or online points and take cash from you for that with their fees.
So they preferred agents who used to charge fees for booking tickets but people trusted them with their details and just for saving time and for their ease they went for this way but now more and more people are booking online by themselves eliminating agents and their fees.
Sometimes they also used to take advantage of innocent people and indulge them in fraud activities and thug them. But this was the time when people were not familiar with the internet and system. Now is not that case.
Talking about booking tickets under Udan scheme which is launched to increase business and increase standard of living of poor and middle class people which will in turn increase the business and economy of our country.
Airports which were less functional and flights were less operated will get a boost and due to less fared tickets business will increase in those areas and in the long run will help in the growth of our country. Also if airlines suffer a loss due to this in the short-run government has decided to provide subsidy to them but this scheme is provisional for 10 years only to expand the airline functions.
For now airlines are supposed to keep 50% of total seats of airplane at capped fares while the number of reserved seats should be at least 9 and maximum 40.
All the seats in flights are not entitled to Rs 2500 fare. Only, the traveller will get 50% off only if he/she has taken the scheme otherwise they will have to pay the market price of the tickets.

Boston, you knocked my Sox off!
(See what I did there!)
Loooong travel day, 6.5hr bus trip back to DC, followed by a train to the airport. I had allowed a good 5 hrs from the bus arrival to the flight departure, so when the flight was delayed by another hour it turned out to be a very long day!! All part of travelling though, and I am still the worst sleeper ever, so that doesn’t help either! I booked a brand new hotel that is part of a chain I have stayed in before. Good choice Kaz, it seems familiarity is still something you crave even when you have been on the crazy odyssey I have been on! Not the most expensive, but not the cheapest either, although research showed me that Boston is not the cheapest place for accomodation! Good news is I again lucked out and have ended up in walking distance to all the stops on the freedom trail, as well as the Tea party ships in the harbour. Oh, I almost forgot, more importantly walking distance to little Italy... seriously , yum...
My first day here, was a colder, wet day, and after my late night and big sleep, I decided to explore my local area, and find a laundromat, get the boring but necessary part of travel out of the way. I ended up at a local coffee shop while I was waiting ( in the Italian quarter - I worked out later.... in my defence I was tired!!) Anyway I had some great chats with some locals at both the coffee shop and the laundromat. Yes, I still talk to strangers....
I will admit it, I am in love with Boston. This place seems to have just the right balance of everything. Public transport system is not the newest or cleanest (or cheapest..) BUT it still got me in all the feels. The history here is amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed walking the freedom trail. Cheapo that I am I didn’t want to buy the map or books, I found a free online interactive map, that told me the stories of the sites, and conveniently the sidewalks had a tiled red section indicating the trail (no arrows or numbers like the one in Hanover though). Apparently a journalist had suggested marking the path to the 16 landmark sites some time in the 1950’s - fabulous idea!!! The walk itself apparently takes about 2.5 hours (its about 4 miles) and covers the sites that are integral parts of the history of not just this city, but of the entire country. The freedom trail takes you on a journey of the major players who were a part of the Boston Tea Party, an uprising that set the country on a course that ultimately ended in a war with England, and the birth of a new nation. Charleston, the site of the Bunker hill monument ( the final stop of the trail), a giant 67m tall granite monument erected between 1825 and 1843 was one of the sites of the first major battles between the British and the Patriot forces in the American Revolutionary War.
Luckily one of the guys in reception had suggested a local Italian deli that make, the best, Italian sub I have ever put in my mouth. Seriously. Tastiest thing ever. the fact that they shave the meat to order as they make it, only adds to the appeal. I then located a shop that makes Italian pastries getting a couple of cannolis that I was destined to eat over the next couple days. (Sad to say they may have been nicer than the ones I had in Sicily recently —-eeek yep I said it!!!) There are no rules about following the freedom trail, so truth be told I kind of did some on one day, then wandered and decided to start from the beginning the second day I was here, starting in the famous Biston Common, taking in such beautiful buildings as the Massachusetts state house, kings chapel, the site of the Boston massacre, Feneuil hall, and some amazing cemeteries (Google the whole list if you're interested!) It was then time for a lunch stop, and where better than Boston's oldest restaurant, the Union Oyster. I had to have the clam chowder and a lobster roll! The building was amazing, the interior covered in historical pictorials. The food was good, probably not worth the price, (and the roll was not as nice as the one I'd had in NYC) but hey it's the ambience and the history you sign up for!
After lunch I stopped before heading to Bunker hill, Instead heading to the Tea party ships and museum (in the opposite direction). Thinking about it, its not much different to how I have done everything else on this crazy adventure. I kind of just wing it and seem to end up in the right place at the right time. When I arrived at the tea party museum, I was just in time for the start of the next tour. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, these things are awesome. They have actors who take on the role of historical figures and lead you through the events of the past. You are given a card with your own character on it and encouraged to join in (as if I need more encouragement...) My kind of leaning really!!! The mix of live interactive performance and the films they show you gave me an incredible insight and understanding of the events that have been dubbed as the ‘Boston tea party’. The Boston Tea Party was a political protest that took place on 16th December 1773 at Griffin’s Wharf. American colonists, frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation.” They boarded the ships and smashed open and dumped about 350 or so lead lined chests of tea, imported by the British East India Company, into the harbour. This event was the first major act of defiance to British rule over the colonists.
My last full day I spent out in Salem. The story of the witch hysteria, and what occurred back in 1692 is unsettling in the least. Understandable in way, given the time period it occurred, (hey its easier to look at anything in hindsight and go - ‘hey why did that happen’). Anyway it was another rainy day, which added to the intrigue. The city itself plays on its witch history, something I’m not sure sits quite right with me, but I guess you either own it and make it work for you or end up with al the tourists anyway! The historical area of the town has some amazing buildings. The witch museum tour was another tour presented by actors and gave me more if an understanding of the events at that time. The memorial for the 19 people who died as a result of the trials was very well done. A simple space that details the date and manner of thier death, with their final statements carved into the stone entrances to the space. 18 of the accused were hung, with one man (whose wife had already been hung), crushed to death. The law at the time required a trial and a plea to be entered before any punishment was dealt out. Giles Corey refused to enter a plea, so the torture of the day was applied in order to get him to speak. He apparently lasted almost 3 days of having boulders placed upon him, his only words each time, "more weight", his final words apparently a curse upon the town and the office of Sheriff. There is alot more interesting history that revolves around the Salem witch trials. The fact that they recognised they had been wrong and made restitution to the families of those who had been killed was a big step. They still have only theories as to how and why it all began, but I guess an onus of proof instead of heresay is one big thing that came out of it!
I then headed back to Boston on the train, catching a local train to get me over to Bunker hill memorial (yeah- I didn't feel like walking a mile by then!). I didn't climb the memorial as it was too late for the last entry, but it's impressive and kind of humbling to stand at its base knowing what occurred here.
All too soon, my time here is over! 😪
I'm off to Chicago to see another friend from my Morocco tour - more Boston photos to come (as usual!!)

The weirdest things we learned this week: hot air balloon riots and the man-eatingest tiger
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/the-weirdest-things-we-learned-this-week-hot-air-balloon-riots-and-the-man-eatingest-tiger/
The weirdest things we learned this week: hot air balloon riots and the man-eatingest tiger
What’s the weirdest thing you learned this week? Well, whatever it is, we promise you’ll have an even weirder answer if you listen to PopSci’s hit podcast. The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week hits iTunes, Anchor, and everywhere else you listen to podcasts every Wednesday morning. It’s your new favorite source for the strangest science-adjacent facts, figures, and Wikipedia spirals the editors of Popular Science can muster. If you like the stories in this post, we guarantee you’ll love the show.
This week’s episode is extra special: it’s the first half of our second live show, which happened on February 1 at Caveat in NYC. As mentioned at the top of this week’s episode, you may hear hosts or audience members shouting “drink!” This is because we were playing a drinking game, which you’re welcome to recreate on your own time (assuming you’re of legal age and not driving while you listen). Take a drink of your fabulous and refreshing beverage of choice whenever:
Someone makes a pun (two drinks if it gets a groan!)
Rachel makes a joke about the fact that we obviously planned the live show in advance even though the podcast is totally spontaneous we swear
Jason makes an appearance
Someone in the audience is audibly appalled (or just appallingly audible)
A cast member says the word “Weird”
Eleanor finds an excuse to bring up taxidermy
Rachel finds an excuse to mention her fianc or cat
Anyone finds an excuse to bring up some kind of body horror or otherwise excessive mention of viscera
If we try to declare a tie you have to finish your drink, so you’d better cheer loud for your fave
Fact: Balloon riots were not uncommon (and were sometimes fatal)
By Rachel Feltman
Hot-air and gas ballooning was always a lofty affair: legend has it that Marie Antoinette was present for the first demonstration of the technology in 1783, along with some 130,000 french citizens. The basket contained a sheep, a duck, and a rooster, and apparently, they all behaved themselves until landing in the woods. The same cannot be said for human spectators of the air ballooning sport. In our latest live show, I highlighted not one, not two, but three historical balloon riots. The first, which has picked up a lot of mythos over the years, is outlined stupendously in this article by Dr. Brett Holman of Melbourne (and hilariously by me in our podcast, which you’ve hopefully already listened to). The second, which you may have heard of—it’s known as the great balloon riot, after all—is memorialized in this fantastic image.
It also inspired some truly stupendous media coverage at the time.
The third balloon riot I turned up (quite unexpectedly) in the course of my research is the least famous and most upsetting of the bunch. This is from a newspaper clipping that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on December 19, 1856. The article describes the court proceedings surrounding the death of a young boy named Thomas Downs. He’d gone to see a balloon ascent that turned into a riot when a bunch of sailors tugged down the balloon and set it on fire. As this occurred two years before the the first riot I describe in the show and eight years before the most famous incident, it’s clear that humankind learned nothing from the tragic demise of young Downs. It’s also clear that Victorians were whacky.
Fact: Baseball fans are obsessed with curses and will do almost anything to break them (like delivering a bloody goat’s head in a cake box)
By Jessica Boddy
One rainy April afternoon in 2013, an unknown person delivered an unidentified package in a white cake box to Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. When security opened it up, it did not contain cake, but rather a severed goat’s head. There was no note left with the noggin, but it was immediately apparent why someone decided to do this. It was because of a curse.
The Cubs were cursed by a local tavern-owner in 1945 after Wrigley staff refused to let him and his pet goat enter the stadium for a game. He hexed the team, saying the Cubs would never win another World Series. Desperate for their team to win, fans engaged in many goat-related antics—like a head in a box—to try to break the curse, which was eventually lifted in 2016 when the Cubs won a championship.
The weirdest part is, the Cubs aren’t really out of the ordinary when it comes to curses in baseball. A black cat once crossed a dugout and incited the team’s crumble, and another time a player hit a bird with a pitch. A biblical swarm of midges has descended upon Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox, too, were under the spell of a decades-long curse—fans even hired an exorcist to purify Fenway Park, the team’s stadium. Baseball fans on the whole have a flair for the supernatural, especially when compared to fans of most other professional sports. I decided to investigate why this might be. The answer has to do with America’s love of conspiracy (take the Salem witch trials and the moon landing for instance), crowd psychology, and plain old mathematics.
Fact: The Champawat tigress was the most man-eatingest animal of all time
By Eleanor Cummins
In a new book, No Beast So Fierce: The Terrifying True Story of the Champawat Tiger, the Deadliest Animal in History, author Dane Hucklebridge details the surprisingly methodical and incredibly blood machinations of a single Bengal “tigress.” Between 1900 to 1907, the Champawat man-eater stalked humans living in the villages of southern Nepal and, because tigers know no borders, eventually northern India. Along her route, she killed 435 people, making her perhaps the most murderous non-human animal in recorded history. As part of the Weirdest Thing live show, I talked about her behavior, her species, and the life of the British Indian Army service member and noted cat hunter Jim Corbett who finally caught up with her. Plus, enjoy experiencing an ad for Calvin Klein’s Obsession cologne, a scent that was used to lure and capture a tiger in more recent history.
