Helloooooo0, some more Idia Shroud fanart, now inspired by screenshots from Disney's Hercules. Because I HAVE A THEORY! = I'm rambling again. :) Note that at the time when I'm writing this I have just finished Book 6 and I haven't started Book 7 yet. So this will contain some spoilers for Book 6. And everything under the cut as always :)
Also Disney's Hercules took a lot of creative liberties with the Greek mythology. Like Hera being the one trying to kill Hercules, rather than Hades because Zeus was being a horny bastard. And Hades being pretty straight up guy compared to his contemporaries. But I will be using the Disney movie as the basis since that is where the game takes its inspirations.
THESIS:
Idia Shroud from Twisted Wonderland is more like a twisted version of Hercules rather than Hades from the Disney movie.
Here me out:
Sure, his visual design is pretty much inspired by Hades and I love it. And the fact that he has a job that was bestowed upon him by his bloodline rather than by his own choice. (Zeus forcing Hades to take care of the Underworld full of dead souls and so on. ) And how Idia is pretty sarcastic like Hades when he is avoiding serious talking or pointing out absurd things. Let's just say, I take this as the surface personality of Idia.
But underneath it all, what do we have? We have a person who wants to be normal. What did Hercules want to be in the start of the movie? A normal person. Someone who was accepted and someone who could fit in among his peers. That is ultimately what Idia wants. Idia wants to be liked. That's why I think he was inspired to be a hero when he was young, something Hercules also wants to be to gain acceptance. (Hercules does it to be with his biological family again and so on.)
They are both awkward in social situations, other kinda in this himbo way and other in this nerdy awkwardness kinda way.
They both go into Underworld to find the person who was the most important to them. Hercules - Megara / Idia - Ortho
BUT ALSO! At the end of the movie, Hercules wants to stay as a mortal because he found acceptance with Meg. Idia could have stayed with S.T.Y.X. If he really wanted. I'm pretty sure with that. But he chose to go back to NRC because he, with encouragement with Ortho, wanted to experience life before he has to go and be the Watchman of the Underworld. He has a long way to go, he really harbors so much self-hatred and uncounciously self-sabotages himself. It is good thing that he has Ortho calling him out on it.
I really hope to see him grow and like himself more in the future :)
(I just loved all the Greek mythology names and references in the Book 6, it is such *chef's kiss * Like how Star Rogue is pretty much the tale of Zeus fighting against his father Chronos who has eaten all his other siblings and so on.)

UNIQUE MAGIC
Tumblr media
As you can see, Pépito is inspired by the vultures that descend on the evil queen's body at the end of the movie "Snow White." But imagine if Pépito did the same thing?
Only this time, instead of finishing off the evil queen (like her counterpart in the original film), she leaps in to catch Vil as he jumps into the "Underworld Gate" to save Idia? And it’s at that moment she discovers her unique magic!
It’s like drawing a parallel between the Disney version and Twisted.

The fact that Kalim and Jamil have a very opposite but similar problem that's holding them back will never not be fascinating to me.
For Kalim, he's been so coddled and sheltered all his life that he doesn't know how to be an independent adult. He is perfectly capable of doing things, as seen in his lab-wear vignette, but he always asks Jamil for help. He has been so coddled that he has a learned helplessness and doesn't even have the motivation to try. Even after his character development in book 5, he is shown trying to be independent, but either his parents or Jamil step in and take over.
On the other hand, Jamil was robbed of being a carefree child. He doesn't know how to relax or rely on others. He's been subjected to adultification and made to act far beyond his age or maturity in order to basically parent a boy who's almost the same age as him. He has to believe that he is the most capable person ever, otherwise Kalim is in danger and it's his fault.
And the worst of it is that these problems are reinforced by each other. Kalim's learned helplessness means relying on Jamil, which reinforces Jamil's superiority complex and parenting Kalim. Jamil being overprotective of Kalim means that Kalim never learns or grows, and Jamil being taught to see Kalim as more valuable than anyone else means he never lets Kalim make mistakes or try.
We saw a little bit of change at the end of book 6 (as result of leona's pep talk), and I hope they both continue to grow.

(This was originally an ask received through Twitter)
"Hi! I finished Book 6 on EN Server just a few hours ago, and something stuck out to me in the Mickey Conversation. When reading Fan Subs, it seemed like Mickey was saying he saw the Silver haired weird eye colour boy (probably Silver, heh) in Yu's Room. But reading EN's translation, it pretty clearly placed the boy on Mickey's side of the mirror. Is this added specificity by EN, or reading the original Japanese, is that the conclusion that would come?"
I agree with the EN translation, but! I definitely understand how there might have been some confusion!
Originally Mickey does not say “my dream room,” he says “this dream room,” which is very important.
Tumblr media
Seeing the word "this" (この) might have led a few translators to think, "'this room' is the room in Ramshackle, so Mickey must be describing what he saw in Ramshackle."
Much like English, Japanese differentiates between things close to/belonging to you (this, この) vs. things close/belonging to other people (that, その), but unlike English the difference is a little stricter.
Mickey uses この for "this room," which can only mean the room where he is. If he had meant the prefect's room, he would have said その, for "that room."
Since English can be more flexible with "this" and "that," it is possible that people saw "this room" in Japanese and interpreted it as what "this room" means to themselves, not what it means to Mickey.
From a Japanese-language perspective, however, "this room" is the one occupied by the speaker (Mickey), not the one occupied by the listener (the prefect).
Tumblr media
The idea that the boy was in the prefect's room is further debunked by Mickey’s follow-up line, when he says that he wishes the prefect could also come to see him on "this side" (こっち側, with "this" being from the speaker's (Mickey's) perspective, while the listener's side (Ramshackle) would be そっち側), just like the boy with silver hair :>

Lilia’s Relationship with Malleus and Silver / The Image of a King Upheld by Malleus
Book 7 spoilers
So I’m just thinking about Lilia and his complicated relationship with Malleus and Silver. Literally, it’s at two ends of the spectrum how his relationship is with each of them.
On one hand, he raised Malleus to be a king. He had placed lines between himself and Malleus to a certain degree. He protected him and installed in him the knowledge to be a great king and what is expected of him. Even at the end of book 6, we see Lilia say how a future king shouldn’t be getting lost in his thoughts. And for just a few moments, you can see how that kind of upsets Malleus a bit before he agrees.
Then we have Silver, Lilia found this baby as far as we know, and raised him. He wasn’t raising a future king. There was no expectations or rules when it came to caring for Silver. He just raised him as best as he could and he loved the child and the child loved him in return. To the point of wanting to do his father proud, and also wanting to always be there for him.
You can see the two different ways that Lilia raised and cared for them, and they, in return loved him.
On one hand, I can see Malleus being envious. Envious of the love Silver received compared to him. But he’s not, rather it was Silver crying that tipped Malleus over, because he loves Silver as well.
While Silver wanted to make up for all the love that Lilia always showed him and be there for him till the end but he can’t even do that.
All because Lilia freaking Vanrouge decided that he didn’t want people he loves to suffer the same way he did when he lost loved ones. So, he leaves. Causing a cascade of heartbreak.
Now going back to Malleus, I think about all those years he had with Lilia, but I think about how lonely he might have felt even with those years. He loved Lilia and Lilia loved him…within limitations. He was after all raising the future king. But then remember, Lilia wasn’t always at Malleus’ side. He would leave on adventures while Malleus was at home. And little Malleus would look forward to his return. He would be happy to see Lilia and hear all the stories he would return with and the little souvenirs and I imagine seeing Lilia happy was what made it worth the wait for his return and maybe even what stopped Malleus from being selfish and telling Lilia to stay.
Because that’s how he was being raised, think about the happiness of others, respect their wishes, think about the peoples’ wants…that’s what it means to be a king and the sacrifices that needs to be made.
But it would hurt Malleus wouldn’t it? But Malleus can never show it because even those closest to him expected greatness from him. Expected him to be this great figure that would take over for his grandmother. He will be a King.
So, is it not expected then? For Malleus to, at one point, reach that tipping point?
And that tipping point was at the hurt he saw in his loved ones which reflected his own. Which finally allowed him to express his own.
Because a king can’t fall to his own emotions, but he can for others.
A king can make sacrifices so others can be happy.
So, won’t you let him show you a happy ending?
Even at the cost of his life?

rook vil convo in tartarus
Book 6 spoilers
(Off topic) going back through book 6 so i just. dont remember this line LMFAO EPEL
Tumblr media
[Epel: Sheesh... This boy ain't right...]
anyway
Book 7 card spoilers (aka JP spoilers)
So you know how people have been pissed at Vil for somehow like. persuading rook to go to pomefiore???
do you not remember this conversation
[Vil: I tried to dissuade him when he first brought up transferring to me. But Rook cares not for the opinions of others once he decides something. Though you two already know that, right? [...] Before I knew it, the complicated paperwork and ceremonies were complete, and there he was, wearing a Pomefiore uniform.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HE EVEN LIKES DRESSING UP (a conversation about how his experience watching was even better when he was dressed up for it)
[Rook: He even coordinated my entire ensemble. I don't think I'll ever forget the exaltation I felt when I set out for that play! I always delight in watching shows. But if I were to quantify my enjoyment and rate my prior experiences at 100... Then that day was easily 120! Perhaps even 200! Ever since then, I've developed an appreciation for personal care.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pls dont treat rook like he can't make decisions for himself because he can. he easily could've pursued beauty still in savanaclaw, but he didn't want to because he wanted to see vil be even more beautiful with his help
its his choice to do it, and that means if he didn't like it he could've also just transferred back out and nothing vil would've said would convinced him otherwise
mkay???

📡 _a/n. hello!! you did this req just fine, tyty ^-^ SOO sorry for getting to this late, busy couple days, exams kicked my ass..but i always come back! things may be a bit ooc or spelt wrong ( though i sure hope not ) because i mostly wrote whenever i got bursts of writing motivation and wrote quickly, but i hope it’s nice anyway!
m. draconia
— as usual, malleus takes you by the hand, delicately so, like you were a fragile and expensive piece of jewelry. the cool, crisp air surrounds the both of you, in the dead of night with a few fireflies to illuminate you even so. he noticed it when you were whittling at your nails, taking quick action to cover your hands with gloves as he gave you a stern but concerned gave in regards to it. he knew it wasn’t a proper way of dealing with your troubles, at least that much was certain to him, but from previous experiences involving his constant attempts at helping and being there for you, he hoped it would be enough for at least this time.
— there wasn’t a doubt in anyone’s mind, and he admitted it himself though it left him rather pouty, that he wasn’t quite knowledgeable on the ways of mortal beings. not to say he hasn’t dealt with the matter at all, far from it, but he wished he had even the slightest clue what you personally were going through, just to comfort you more. he allowed his grip on your hand to be a little firmer, but not enough to hurt you—never enough to hurt you, ever. he turned to face you, noticing your more relaxed face which greatly contrasted your far more stressed expression from when he first saw you. he was a little worried your usual late night walks wouldn’t be enough, but it seemed this time around, he was wrong; he tended to be, when it came to mortal problems, but this time he wasn’t upset by the fact. you aren’t upset, so why should he be?
i. shroud
— the one and only, idia shroud, is certainly no stranger to the unfortunate dealings with anxiety and overthinking. quite literally cursed and therefore constantly wallowing in his own misery, it’s easy for him to tell when you’re going through something that leaves you anxious and pulling at your hair or cheeks, that if one would look closely enough, were barely stained by tears that were falling, but you were quick to wipe away whenever you noticed. he sympathized with you, so though it left him starting to feel anxious at the thought of it, he lovingly, in all his awkwardness, approached you in his attempt to help take your mind off things.
— he tends to be self-deprecative, even when he doesn’t mean it, but at times like these he makes sure to keep from it as to not leave you more anxious and stressed than you were before. in fact, though he’s not good at it, he wracks his brain to come up with compliments specially reserved for you, smiling with his sharp teeth sneakily peeking through as he addresses you as such, and though it’s again something he doesn’t mean, ends up switching the topic almost a dozen times and bringing up things he knows you like, whether it be hobbies or favorite whatever, and though neither of you recognize it, by that point, you’ve already relaxed enough to completely forget what you were anxious about before he showed up.
v. schoenheit
— being the housewarden of pomefiore, vil is an advocate for beauty and being the best you one could possibly be. and, well, unnecessary stress and anxiety doesn’t exactly come with that package, now does it? which means that vil will be damned if he lets you deal with that on your lonesome, that’s for sure. not only just a housewarden, he’s also a famous actor, so he’s had his fair share of anxiety and stress, especially in his early stages. he’s learned how to deal with relieving that very stress, and knowing that certain things may not work for everyone, he guides you through the basics first of all.
— he calms you down enough by guiding you through breathing exercises and rubbing your back with his hand, breathing careful reminders to take care of yourself, but making sure to watch his tone as to let you know he’s not belittling you in the slightest; he’s just worried for your health, he’ll have you know. on that note, he still guides you to his dorm room in order spend some of his free time with you, deciding to give you a little spa treatment—his treat, of course, he wouldn’t dare have you owe a favor in this state. he guides the process mostly himself, allowing you to sit back and relax, applying a face mask on you and giving you a more proper massage. after all, who would he be if he wasn’t making sure you weren’t the best you he knew you were?
r. rosehearts
— yes, certainly, a lenient riddle isn’t exactly a riddle many are used to seeing; but how could he be anything else knowing how there are one too many unnecessary things on your mind at the moment? the last thing he wants to do is contribute to that, so though it may or may not hurt his soul when rules are broken by you or when you’re in the vicinity, he doesn’t off any heads or lose his temper. rather, he focuses his attention on you to make sure that you’re cared for and feeling alright. after all, a you that’s frowning is the last you that he wants to see ( though it’s worse when you get so anxious you hide out in your room until you get over it ), so he’ll do all that he can do that at the very least, you feel pleasant.
— so he delicately pours you a cup of tea, allowing you to sit by him as he lets you rant about your sorrows, adding in commentary to let you know for a fact he’s listening and that he understands your feelings. he’s already prepared a variety of snacks for you to indulge on—though in the least harsh way he possibly could makes sure to let you know that it would be best to indulge while making sure not to do so too much in the process because he knows stress eating will do you know good—, snacks of which he put extreme amounts of work making just for you. so maybe the snacks are just a little, teensy bit imperfect in appearance or just a little too much of one or two ingredients in there that would throw it off balance normally, but you find yourself not caring, because the snacks are good enough that they take your mind off things for at least just this time.

Please ignore how this is my third post telling people to shut up and talk about a certain scene but seriously THERE ARE SO MANY MOMENTS NOT TALKED ABOUT??? Siege of Macindaw wasn’t my favorite book, I won’t lie, but there were some moments that made me cry. After Will fights Machaddish and Horace rescues him, and Will is shaking and freaking out, did we forget that Horace sees his friend covered in blood and starts PANICKING. He immediately is checking for any wounds that might cause Will to bleed out, and asking him questions, and Will is just super frustrated and wants Horace to leave him alone but he WONT, until eventually Horace realizes Will is fine and Will realizes that Horace was just keeping him safe. It just shows how much their friendship has evolved. AND obviously we all know that halt sees Will as his son and everything but you guys realize that the first time he calls him son IS IN SIEGE OF MACINDAW RIGHT??? Halt can tell something is wrong, Will does his whole “yes, no, well kind of, I don’t know” thing, Halt gives him what he hopes is an answer that will help him, and then Will tells him goodnight. And Halts response? “Good night, son.” SON HE CALLED HIM SON LIKE HE SAID IT TO HIM. IT WAS SPOKEN. AND THE LINES AFTER THAT??? “Sometimes, life threw up problems that even the wisest, most trusted mentor couldn’t solve for you. It was part of the pain of growing up. And having to stand by and watch was part of the pain of being a mentor.” I SOBBED. I BROKE DOWN I CRIED ALL OF THESE CHARACTERS MEAN SO MUCH TO ME
