one of my personal faves, so more is probably to come.

Peacefully exists in her own little corner of the internet, think variety, art or wholesome gaming streams.

Has a small but very wholesome and tight community and she works very hard to keep it that was. Zero tollerance for any hate or bullshit.

Meets Hasan through some Twitch related event where a mutual friend introduces them. bestie!Will maybe 👀

She's definitely intimidated by him at first, but once she gets over that they hit it off instantly.

They live really far apart (other side of the country or maybe even a different continent?) so at first it is just a long distance friendship kind of thing.

They are constantly texting or chatting on Discord, even during streams. Either of them has their phone in their hand? The other definitely just texted them.

Once they are actually in a relationship people figure it out so fast because suddenly Hasan is in her city very often and she always stays in L.A. forever whenever there is an event she attends.

Either that or Austin accidentally leaks their relationship on his Instagram or just by mentioning it on stream.

Speaking of Austin, he asks her to appear on any of his shows and she will say yes without even knowing what she is saying yes to. Bonus points if she gets to compete against Hasan.

She tries playing co-op games with Hasan on stream, but it just always results in them yelling at each other or them both getting hella distracted and getting nothing done.

So instead they just make tierlists and look at dumb videos together.

Also IRL streams where they go on little trips together (and sometimes with Kaya as well)!!!!

Totally moves to L.A. to be closer to Hasan, but will deny that and gives a dozen other dumb reasons when people ask: "The weather is way nicer", "All my friends live here", "I really love being stuck in traffic no matter where I am trying to go". The list just gets more and more unhinged.

She does move into Hasan's place like four months later though.

After that she probably is on his stream a lot, "just to hang out with Kaya".

Can totally see her hanging out in his chat waiting for him to notice. Or using clips to communicate with each other.

EnaKasa my disaster couple. They’re both stubborn as hell, I think they argue at the drop of a hat and at least twice a week Ena goes “That’s it. We are DONE. Get OUT!!!!” (<- He accidentally woke her up at 6am being loud) and to win her back Tsukasa has serenade her from the window after she locks him out of the apartment and she either goes “awww… so sweet” and forgives him or lets him back in because his singing is EMBARRASSING her (bonus points if he manages to get Rui to come too for special effects to impress her. Fireworks and everything outside of her window. So romantic and so unnecessary❤️)

Tsukasa is a great model to paint because he is happy to pose for her as long as she needs him to and afterwards he praises her art so much. How she’s so good at what she does and she caught all of his best features. Tsukasa’s actually crazy about her, hyping his loser gf up so much, happy to do anything she asks when she’s too lazy to get up, introducing her as his wonderful talented partner then Ena is like:

Speakin' of Friday Night Funkin, my brother (@amoura-funkin-official) and I are planning on making our own mod called

(drumroll.mp3) Amoura Funkin'!

The gist of it is BF and GF fall into Amoura - the center of it to be specific. On their way to get out (and make it home in time), they meet a wonderful cast of characters. Raya, who invites them into the bar she works at, Clyde, the King's royal advisor- (and Raya's friend) who's a total nerd. His niece and nephew, Apollo and Lydia, along with the King's right-hand man, Brian. And even the King himself! (and also Jenna maybe)

We are planning to release this mod in versions for the sake of our sanity.

v.0.5 - the beach episode. not really part of the main story, but a fun practice one-off

v.1 - the actual mod. probably not a lot of stuff yet. raya's week and a few freeplay songs

v.1.5- partner's week. @reddnpinkepiphanyz is going to work with us one that part, as partner is their character

v.2 - clyde's week is added along with new dialogue box and character sprites. more freeplay songs. the interface changed a bit

v.3 (?) - animated (hopefully) cutscenes for the dialogue. full interface change. maybe some bonus songs if i'm feeling rather funky

I posted my absolute worst Pokemon day prediction

Now I wanna do the exact opposite that's a for sure chance of never happening, but is almost comedic in how unlikely this is. And again, I know this won't happen, but GOD I wish it would.

Opener is a group of business men on their hands and knees apologizing for the state of the games since gen 8, refunds everyone $300-$600 for the unnecessary drama they've caused by releasing unfinished and unpolished games or just straight up stealing ideas from and lying to fans.

Ohmori is demoted to coffee guy for all of his cut corners. New main directors are Morimoto and Iwao. Address steps they'll take to fix things including cycling games out between GF, ILCA, BAMCO, a Nintendo internal studio, and Genius Sonority with their own crew back. Devs include alumni from Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales of, etc. Each game will have a minimum of 5 to 6 years dev time going forward (with ones today being developed quietly in the background) with no crunch time, promises to improve employee morale and tenure, and promises to polish both their games and put their new pokemon designs through more passes, including a bigger and more robust design team with fresh blood from the best side of the fakemon community.

Also, going forward, fan games are welcomed, encouraged, legal, and no longer subject to legal interference. Anyone who was subject to any Cease and Desist order will be financially compensated. Talents from some of their favorite fan games have been hired.

They're announcing "indie" game spotlights in addition. Going forward, certain fan game devs will be given the opportunity to create their own 2d eshop games and fakemon (now official), and are essentially given the Sonic Mania treatment. Basically everything fun about the fan game scene, but now they have financial backing, and additional help with coding, music, and artwork.

Unova remake, but it's in a hybrid style between SwSh DLC, ORAS, and Legends Arceus, and they've been given more than a year and a half to make it (unlike bdsp) and have free reign to do fun new stuff. It's a combo of B1+2 and W1+2, with a bonus "episode 3." Includes new Pokémon forms, evolutions, paradoxes, convergents, and variants, a robust character customization system with original outfits and new bits, and Challenge mode available right out of the gate. Looks incredibly polished, a firm art style that's reminiscent of og BW 1 and 2 with Battle Revolution's and New Snap's semi realism, and runs well on Switch. Also voice acting.

Legends Unova is revealed- its a Unova far in the future that's been abandoned and reclaimed by nature. More new Pokémon and forms, including more natural looking takes/fixes to certain pokemon like Delphox or Inteleon. A promise to finally meet the original dragon is made, we meet descendants of characters, etc. Also incredibly polished. Everything good about Legends Arceus but better. Releases in 2025.

Ports of Gen 1, 2, and 3 games to eshop- if you already purchased any on the 3ds, you just have it for free again. All ports include events or Japan exclusive things that occurred, including a way to activate exclusive E-Reader battles and events and with working Union Cave encounters (and a way to add new e-reader events made by fans, as has been done recently). FRLG includes more scrapped islands to travel to for fun.

A special hd remaster to Colosseum and GoD is made in tandem. A tweak is made so that you can access pokemon from gen 3 port boxes and Home, and another to speed up Shadow purification to ease tedium. Releases summer 2024.

Builds to Colosseum 3/other title that will release summer 2025, made by the guys that made the originals and given permission to do all the WEIRD shit they wanted to do. Features the first new Eeveelutions in 12 years (as of 2025) as your starters, and is more of the amazing double battle strategy game I loved, and has graphics that would make an average pokemon bootlicker shit themselves with amazement.

Anime project teased is an anime adaptation of the Adventures manga, given the JoJo treatment basically. High quality animation by studio Toho, uncensored, includes the cool fucked up bits like Charmeleon bisecting an Arbok.

Anime movie teased that's basically a new adventure for an older Ash and Pikachu, including a team of new Pokémon. Has him giving guidance to a new kid as they have to deal with... let's say the Ruinous Quartet. Actual battles happen that's not just a bunch of disaster shots, Ash actually has a character and reason for being there and shows growth. New kid goes through growth as well and sees Ash like a big brother. Mythical actually has a reason to be there, and so do Team Rocket. Essentially the Black Clover movie treatment that's just (non sexual) fan service and beautiful anime fights all around.

Any new Pokémon shown today will be added to SV and the Unova remakes for competition purposes once they are available.

Pokemon music album by indie artists that have actually played the games. Not just a gen 1 fest or popular artists. Includes remixes that will appear in the games.

Clothing merch is basically just a bunch of real life versions of clothes worn by player characters, rivals, and certain characters like Brock or Mallow with larger size availability. So you could feasibly dress like Hilbert and Hilda in one case. Brendan's wig hat is included.

They end the stream by signing a contract on. Stream. Swearing to finish and polish their products going forward at any expense, or face contractual consequences. They open a time capsule scheduled to open next year- you see a bar of gold and silver inside, as well as what looks to be an opal and a boomerang, and they seal it. ok. because nobody was asking about it, here's my proseka group ranking

25-ji - i am mentally ill and also i kin one of them. their covers/songs are all so good. it's also unique in a lot of ways (only group where none of the characters meet at school, only group with only 1 first year, only group with a sekai manifested from someone that isn't the leader, only group that was an established music group before their main story, etc) and i like that. and because i'm edgy i like their aesthetics, story, and characterization. there's lots of interesting and realistic scenarios with them. kanade has trauma and blames herself for her father's illness, mafuyu has ultimately been driven to suicidal depression mostly due to her overly controlling parents, ena has a severe inferiority complex because she works super hard on her art and gets no recognition or praise outside of 25ji even from her own family (kinnie moments), and mizuki has resorted to skipping school to avoid transphobic harassment from other students. these are real problems lots of people relate to, someone could even relate to all of them at once, so it makes the stories so intriguing and the characters so memorable

wxs - my gf likes this one so i have bias. i love the clowns because they're all totally autistic. i love tsukasa and emu's noises. i also like how colorful they are and i think they all have very good backstories. i'd really like emu in particular to be expanded on she definitely seems like she'd be a "my family is rich and cares more about money than my own happiness" kinda character but i might be reading too deep into it.

vbs - definitely the gayest of units. they also get the giga-p songs AND echo so huge bonus points for that. i love their styles, an in particular is my favorite character design in the whole game. their story also rules, the only thing that kinda bothers me is i think kohane should have kept her glasses. the haircut i understand, it's cool, but i don't like the trope of "character stops wearing glasses to signify Change" bitch she needs to SEE!!!!!!!!! i know she has contacts but i don't get what was wrong with the glasses :( (also i know kohane is first in the lineup but i'm not the only one who thought an was the leader at first right. like she's the one they show at the beginning of the vbs story, kohane doesn't show up til like halfway through chapter 1 and i dont think they even display her name at first. actually that kinda bothers me too)

mmj - i like them, i don't have any strong opinions. i like some of their songs but i definitely feel like the songs they cover are very inconsistent, in some cases i think they should have gone to other units (like i think patchwork staccato fits in more with 25-ji, maybe near as well). i think the concept is super interesting, 1 aspiring idol + 3 girls who quit being idols, and the story behind those 3 girls and WHY they quit being idols. the characters just don't really stand out to me though...they're not like, boring or copied from other characters or anything, they just don't super interest me. BUT i do really appreciate how their story is handled, and their subsequent event stories are realistic idol stuff like finding an agency or managing live streaming sessions, i think it's a good take on that stuff

leo/need - i think the story is very well done, and the individual characterization too, but i gotta be honest. the more i think about leo/need the more upset i am. it has everything to do with their songs. i don't generally like deco*27's style, he's very talented but his style is just not for me (but i like hibana and ghost rule). pretty much every song leo/need has other than teo, roki and hibana (though even with hibana i play with the meiko cover) is sooo boring to me to the point where i actively dread having to play through them in multilives. not to mention that ichika gets WAY more emphasis than any other group leader. off the top of my head i can think of 5 songs (hibana, teo, roki, dramaturgy, and umitetie katiyetan or whatever it's called. whatever that one is) that are just ichika and miku duets, which is way more than any other group leader. in fact the only other miku/unit member duet i can think of is hated by life itself (with kanade). ichika even gets a solo cover (night sky patrol of tomorrow) which im pretty sure literally no other unit member has (not counting another vocal versions obviously). saki, honami and shiho get NO songs of their own, or even like individual duets with ichika or miku (and luka has NOTHING. vbs and mmj let her sing with them but not the unit that she was literally assigned to!!). in the mvs for teo and roki they just play their instruments together in the background without singing. i get they're the band unit but all the characters are meant to be singers in some form, there's no reason the other members shouldnt get to sing. (and it's not like ichika herself doesnt have an instrument!! like it's not like everyone else is too busy!!) LITERALLY DURING SHIHO'S BIRTHDAY LIVE SHE DIDN'T SING AT ALL IT WAS ICHIKA AND MIKU DOING TEO. i didnt see honami's birthday but i imagine they didn't let her sing either. it just really pisses me off how they just, neglect ichika's friends way more than they would for any other unit. but yeah i just think their songs are boring

rum-and-shattered-dreams had an amazing bit in their fic about Bill gazing at dimensions and I wanted to play with that idea. I’ve read A LOT of Gravity Falls stuff since re-falling in love with the show. Here’s a list of the ones that Bill takes a glance out. I felt I should share the works and authors!

Excuse me while I cry. In this reality Ford discovers Dipper and Mabel on his doorstep in 1982 and he’s their dad. This is both a heart warming and heart breaking work. They do an amazing job of keeping Ford and Stan in character. Kid Dipper and Mabel are so well done. Soos’ mom is such a great character. Bill is still a jerk and so is Pa Pines but we knew that.

Major Warnings: There are warnings for Past Child Abuse and Neglect and oof that neglect rang a little close to home for me but I was able to handle it.

1 Step Forward, 20 Years Back by @infriga (Ppleater on A03)

Fountain of youth= TINY STAN. I love the concept of the Fountain of Youth here and I can’t talk about other stuff without spoilers but there’s a great Ford to the rescue moment in this and Stan’s natural charisma gets a +2 bonus as a kid. It’s great.

The fic that inspired this scene. I love how they weave the canon of the show with what’s happening in this AU. Ford never went through the portal but Bill can now take control of him at will.  Ford and Stan’s bond is just so good in this. It’s dark but it has great humor too.

Major Warnings: Bill is a sadistic bastard and lets that out on Ford. Big ones are torture, eye trauma, and suicidal ideation.

A Little Bit Lost by @impishnature

An idea that Ford comes out of the portal much more feral than in canon. Just read it. Trust me just read it. It covers very realistic post trauma Ford in a series of one shots in a way the show probably never could have.

Major Warnings: Ford’s PTSD and the associated side effects (flashbacks and panic attacks) is very evident in this.

30 Seconds Later by Shayera (Also no idea if there is a tumblr)

Such a fun concept. Ford only spends 30 Seconds in the portal but for Stan it was still 30 years. There’s a great family D&D&MD bit in here that made my heart happy.

Major Warnings: Bill can also control Ford when he’s out. He attacks someone while possessed and there’s some damage.

An amazing Drifting Stars AU (Mabel gets pulled into the multiverse by accident) The balance between Ford and Mabel in the multiverse and Stan and Dipper fighting to get them back is so good. The worlds are so creature and horrifying and I’m at the edge of my seat reading it.

Major Warnings: There’s some pretty scary stuff in here I think. Mabel and Ford get roughed up quite a bit. I would also mention alcoholism and abuse towards children because again Bill Cipher is a jerk.

A Step in the Wrong Direction Series by impishnature

 When Stan tries to bring back Ford he ends up in the portal instead. I’ll go on about impish nature’s writing in a moment if I start here I’ll never get to the rest lol.

Major Warnings: Some blood if I remember right and angst.

Stan falls into the portal with Ford in 1982 and things got very awry in a realm of horror but the bond Ford and Stan share may just get them through after all is the basis of this AU. Be warned it gets dark but it’s super good.

Demonic Conman by Impishnature

Stan takes up Bill’s offer to join him and becomes a demon. With two separate endings this is one of the first GF fanfic I read and I have loved EVERYTHING Impish has written. Like I could just recommend all of their stuff. Stan as a demon is amazing.

Fisherman’s Knot by @scribefindegil

This is the very first fic I read when I wanted to find more GF stuff since I missed the show so much. It wrecked me in such a good way and I read the whole thing (it’s a big one) in like 2 days. I cried. The angst and humor is amazing. The original character is great and I love her. The last line stuck with me for days. As someone who has struggled with depression and it’s darker hold over a person it spoke to me beyond it being about Ford and Stan.

Major Warnings: Suicide Ideation/ Attempt, Anxiety, and Deep Depression.

The Adventure Zone/ Gravity Falls crossover I didn’t know I needed in my life. I love the inside of the Journal and a certain someone’s reappearance. I think you can get the basics of the story without having to listen to TAZ but if you haven’t you should lol.

Major Warnings: Just Peril I believe. Nothing really comes to mind.

The Lighthouse Keeper AU by Impishnature with art by @sightkeeper

Gravity Falls set in a lighthouse on the coast of Oregon. What I love about this one is the take on Bill is probably even scarier than canon Bill. It’s beautifully written and makes me both want to go to the ocean and never set foot in it again. Dipper and Mabel are also super cute in this as well.

Major Warnings: Drowning, Depression and Intrusive Thoughts.

The Past Up In Smoke and Stan’s Diary Hand’s Off by @beacandy

The first one is a great telling of a thing from Journal 3 where they burn all the Bill related stuff they can find. It’s so cathartic.

The second one I don’t want to say too much about because I don’t want to spoil it but once I got what was happening I was floored with feels.

Major Warnings: I don’t really think there are with these two besides angst.

Everyone mentioned has more than one fic to read and there’s so many more out there but I can’t mention them all. I hope this little guide gets someone new a good starting point.

I’m matching you up Uraraka!

Uraraka has had hardships of her own in her life and, although they’re not the same as yours (which she very much understands), she knows how to support you or will learn how to! She’s very giving and generous, but most likely doesn’t expect much back so when you throw back as much support as she gives you, it’s a very welcomed surprise, though she might take a while to wholeheartedly just accept it.

I feel that, as soon as she gets comfortable with you, communication is very important to her. Especially with how you can be a little cold. She wants to know if there’s anything she’s done or if there’s anything she can do and, if not, she at least feels a little better that she’s not in the wrong. So i got me a new phone 2 weeks ago, insralled GF, flashforward to this evening - i dont have any resources, i run out of cores, all my eshelons are 50ish level and i cant beat 4-6. I guess i mught have stupid :( Gimme any advices please or i dunno. Sorry for bothering you, dont know who else to ask/

So! First of all, sorry for my late reply!

Now, on the topic of resources. Try to have logistics running as often as possible. I assume you've only got the starting 4 echelons, so try to have at least one squad constantly out for missions, though two is better. Before you head to bed or any time you're not gonna be playing for a while, send all four echelons on missions. Try to prioritize ammo and rations the most, cause that's what you'll use the most.

For other resources, try to complete as many daily, weekly, and career missions as you can. Additionally, look at the achievements in the Index tab. You can get plenty of things like gems and tokens for free. With tokens you can roll gacha for dorm furniture, which increases dorm comfort, and in turn gives you more batteries daily. Use the batteries to upgrade facilities.

With facilities, some of the most important ones to max as soon as possible are the Data Room and the Forward Basecamp. The better your Data Room, the more exp you earn, which you can then turn into combat reports and fast-track your dolls to high levels. The FOB is great because you basically get free stuff. A small(ish) amount of resources gets currencies that can be used on the black market shop. Sometimes you also get things like cores, tokens, and even 4 or 5 star gear!

But the black market is good because you can get resources like combat reports, cores, and batteries in huge supply quickly. To make the best of the expeditions, use the advantaged dolls as often as possible. They give far better bonuses than just high level dolls. (Though high level helps a bit.) Also, pets determine where your expedition is most likely to explore and therefore what resource they are most likely to collect. Dogs like the snow, cats like the city, birds like the forest, and "others" bring you to the wasteland.

On that note, upgrading the pet rescue centre is helpful to the FOB. More pets means you're more likely to have the advantaged pets of the week. Also, pets in a dorm give a bonus 1000 comfort points up to three pets per dorm, meaning more batteries. Which means you can buy more pets and upgrades. Lots of growth in GFL is exponential.

Now, back to some of the other resources I was talking about. Gems. The gacha currency that lets you buy the other gacha currency. Some of the most important investments for your early game gems are echelons and dorms. More echelons means you can have more teams on logistics runs. More dorms means more batteries. Extra repair slots are also nice, so that can be a secondary goal for your gems. The monthly gem card is a good deal if you're willing to spend some money. 5 bucks (Canadian) gets you 30 gems a day for 30 days, 900 total. Sometimes there's also a rate up on the cards, getting 60 daily for a week.

Next, let's talk about things that burn resources. One of the things I did at the start was not at all understand crafting. More resources aren't immediately better. There's plenty of guides on maximizing your resource value per roll, providing you know what you want to roll for. For your four daily crafts of dolls (this gets you a free token, same for equipment!) either go bare minimum, or 130, 130, 130, 30. This can get you a decent chance at 3, 4, and 5 star dolls for low prices, and if you get duplicates of dolls you've trained, you can retire them for 1, 3, and 5 cores respectively. (However, many 5 star pistols are among the few dolls that are truly worth raising duplicates of.)

At the same time however, higher rarity dolls are expensive to raise, especially early on. If you don't have a duplicate of a doll when dummy linking, you will use cores. 2 stars will need: 1, 1, 2, and 3. 3 stars will need: 3, 3, 6, and 9. 4 stars will need: 9, 9, 18, and 27. 5 stars will need: 15, 15, 30, and 45 cores for maxed dummy links. See how this can burn cores? Especially when you're more likely to have duplicates of less rare dolls?

Try to focus on some of the better 2 and 3 star dolls! You'll find that plenty of dolls are better (or worse) than their stars suggest.

Of 2 stars, M1911, M1895, PPK, M3, MP 40, FN-49, BM-49 (VM-49), G3, Galil, SIG-510, LWMMG, MP-446, and cutecat IDW have all done me well.

From the 3 star pool: M9, G17, Ingram, Skorpion, STEN, M14, (quite possibly one of the best girls in the game, even pre-MOD3 she can beat many 5 star rifles and ARs!) SV-98, FNC, M2 HB, and GSh-18 are choices I've found quite helpful.

Raising many of these dolls is also good because later you can unlock their "MOD" upgrades, 1 through 3. This gives them extra abilities, better stats, unique equipment, new art, and some side stories! Though this is more endgame content.

Another thing. Even though I listed a few MGs in there, for now, try to avoid MGs, and also shotguns. They use lots of ammo and rations respectively. They're more for endgame or weird stuff.

As for getting through lots of the early story. Use the AR Team members. Do not sleep on them. Eventually they will become purposely overpowered for story reasons because of MOD3. They are some of your best dolls for just melting enemies, and M4 is special in that her buff tiles effect ARs instead of SMGs.

For most earlier content, teams made of ARs and SMGs are best. Steady damage and SMGs have good evasion to stay in the fight longer. You can maybe mix a pistol or rifle in there for buffs, or if you need to kill other snipers. Rifle dolls, unlike other units, target the enemies furthest away (within range) first, and work forward. This makes them good for preventing your tanks from getting shredded by snipers with accuracy that out classes your evasion.

Also, having "dummy" echelons can help with clearing maps cheaply. If you are cleaning enemies off a map, you can probably get away with having an echelon for combat, and others that only need to capture nodes. So since they are not going into combat, you can use a single pistol doll for very minimal resource loss if they have to retreat.

As for 4-6 you can likely beat it by having a strong echelon rush to Intruder as soon as possible, with another echelon defending your command post. An ARSMG team should work quite well against her, with the SMGs dodging her attacks and the ARs chipping at her health. As a general tip, flash grenade skills do not affect bosses, but other grenades do, and this can make smoke grenades a good choice as they lower enemy ROF and movement speed. The ROF debuff can keep pressure off your dolls for a little bit. If you need to, have a third echelon behind the one you spawn in the north if they get too beat up getting to Intruder. Then have the fresh squad attack her instead.

Uh. I think that's all. A lot of rambling from me. Probably didn't make it as clear as it should be. But hey, I'm trying, and honestly I'm still sorta noob-ish myself. So AYA is over... What now?

God, that’s weird. I’ve been working on this story since last February, and it’s wild that it’s actually done and finished and posted. Found family narratives are so important to me, and I’m so thankful to all of you guys for showing this story your love and support. Thanks for all the tears ;)

Before anything else, I’d like to send a huge thanks to my gf and editor @theashemarie! She was so kind to help me edit this comic, and legit, it’s sooo much better because of it. Thank you to the moon and back, baby!

One Week Only Ask Blog!

"Sometimes I think about the what ifs,"  Ann said, “but I like where I am. I like what I’ve made for myself.”

Shawn had to invite her over to his house a second time, because the first time left him with many questions unanswered. He couldn’t be mad at what she said, though. He was in the same boat; he liked the life he made. You know, without the crushing loss and run in with the supernatural.

“Well, I’m happy for you,” he told her, and he really meant it. “I’m glad we were able to successfully do our own things straight after breaking up.”

“Nothing like filling the void in your heart with work!” Ann replied with a giggle. She moved a strand of hair behind her ear, and that’s when Shawn noticed something.

He took her hand and noticed a tattoo on the side of her middle finger: The Triforce.

“You got inked?” he asked, impressed.

“Oh, that’s nothing,” she replied, grabbing her sleeve to roll it up.

There was a sword on her inner arm. It was varying in shades of blue, and it also had the Triforce on it. Shawn recognized it as the Master Sword from the Legend of Zelda games.

“All this is is proof that I’m a nerd,” Ann said as she rolled her sleeve back down. “I notice you have some more ink also… and that you still wear shirts half buttoned.” She pointed to his chest.

Her finger poked the exposed skin. It shouldn’t have been as tingly as it was. Shawn smiled and placed his hand over his chest.

“More than just that,” he told her. “But I can’t show you all of them.”

Maybe it was a little risky to say that. Shawn would have taken it back if Ann’s cheeks hadn’t gone a shade of pink.

“I could say the same thing…”

Shawn quickly came to learn just how many tattoos Ann had gotten over the years. A snake and tombstones on her other arm. Feather on her collarbone, roses on her shoulder. A quote reading, “...but I’m not anymore” with stars around it on her ribcage. Something on her wrist that Shawn didn’t catch because he was busy pressing his lips to her hips and taking off her pants, where he found another tattoo. “Lucky you.” He certainly felt it.

Everything about their time together was so familiar, so easy and almost home-like. Ann’s skin touching his. Her lips perfectly molding over his. The quiet, needy gasps they both released into the bedroom. It was like going back in time, and they were in Shawn’s Toronto apartment instead of his multimillion dollar condo in LA. It was soft and slow, despite Shawn pinning Ann’s arms above her head. He didn’t outgrow that particular move, and she still seemed to like it.

Shawn had never been happier to have been on a break more than now. Most one night stands in the past began and ended very quickly, because he was on tour or in between interviews or on a break for one day. This was one person that he didn’t want to leave behind. They lied down, sweaty and dazed, facing each other. It was silent, but not awkward. Everything had a nice haze around it.

That was also when Shawn finally made out what the tattoo on Ann’s wrist was. He picked his head up in confusion.

“Is… are those torches?” he asked. “Upside down? Just like mine… and are those my initials?”

It was simple line art, less intricate than his own. Torches in an X, with “SM” right below them. Shawn has been floored many times, and this was no exception.

Ann picked her head up as well. “It’s not what it looks like.”

Shawn looked down at his chest, his torches were exactly the same, sans the initials. He wanted to give Ann the benefit of the doubt, that this wasn’t some creepy fangirl thing. Some of his one night stands ended up like that, and it wasn’t exactly easy to forget.

“It’s for a friend of mine,” Ann explained, sitting up and covering her front with the blanket. She took note of the look on Shawn’s face. “Keeping someone’s light on beyond death, remember? I assume yours is for someone too.”

They were both sitting up now, and Shawn relaxed. However, he only relaxed a little bit because now it was time to get deep.

“Mine’s for Brian. He died last year.”

Ann’s face fell. “No. Brian, your best friend? Brian, the one who constantly took the piss outta me?”

He nodded. “He was… there was an accident. Flight of stairs. Instantly killed.” It was all lies, but no human would understand.

A hand went over his, squeezing. “I’m so sorry. He just, he just fell down some stairs?”

“A lot of stairs. I don’t know I guess he was running or something. There was no way to save him. People in the house heard the crash, but by the time they found him - when I found him - it was too late.” He had told this version many times, enough times to where he could almost believe it himself.

“Fuck, man. That’s… that’s fucking terrible,” Ann said sympathetically. “But I seriously can’t believe you just told me that.”

“Why?”

“Because now I have to tell you that mine is for Stella. Those are her initials.”

Stella Martinez. Now Shawn felt a little stupid… but surprised, and he was met with a sinking feeling in his stomach. He couldn’t believe it for a second, but it fully processed in his head, and his heart began to break.

“Stella from college? Stella, who was your literal opposite and also your best friend?”

Ann solemnly nodded. Then she looked down. “She… she killed herself.”

Shawn was stunned into silence, the tightness in his chest only intensifying. The entire time he knew Stella, she was always so positive and bubbly. She was the opposite of suicidal. That’s why it was such a shock… and so sad. Oh god, who was going to tell Camila?

“When did Brian go to the other side?” Ann asked after a moment.

“A year ago last month,” Shawn replied. “And Stella?”

Ann raised an eyebrow. “Two years ago last month...”

It was a strange coincidence, but still upsetting. Both Shawn and Ann lost their best friends at the same time of the year. The urge to spill everything was thick in the air. Still, neither of them said anything for a while.

Instead, Ann reached down to the floor to pick up her clothes. Shawn’s eyes were stuck on her and that was when he spotted another word on her back. Nightmare. Small font, right shoulder blade, surrounded by a cluster of skulls. Then, he realized what she was doing.

“Are you leaving?”

She looked up, bra in hand. She was quiet as she put it back on.

“No. No, I’m not going anywhere.”

And she crawled back into bed. She made the point to keep a distance from Shawn, who was still naked. He was on his side, looking at the woman before him. Only Ann could have sex with him and bring up the subject of death. That brought a new point to mind.

“How do you enjoy death?” he asked. “I think I’ve asked you this before, but after losing someone and attending their funeral, I’m having a hard time understanding your perspective.”

Ann took a deep breath, looking up at the ceiling. “I don’t enjoy the act of dying. People die every day in horrible ways. People mourn and fall into depression because of death. That’s not something to enjoy.”

“So what’s your deal with it?”

“I’m just embracing the face that it’s inevitable. I do that for myself. I will die eventually, or tomorrow-”

Shawn made a face; he didn’t like that thought.

“It doesn’t make it any easier when someone I know goes,” Ann continued. “You’d think with all the research I’ve done it would be. The ones we love leave this mortal plane, and all they leave is their absence. And that alone is a lot to process.”

“What’s the hardest part?”

“The what if’s.”

Shawn asked because he really wanted to know more about what happened to Stella. He had to know the things that led up to the tragedy, mostly because he knew Camila would ask for details, even if they were hard to hear.

He figured he should spill his side first.

“The last thing I said to Brian was to get the hell out of my room,” he began. “We were fighting, fighting over something so fucking stupid, and I was so pissed at him. That was our last interaction. He fell down the stairs because he was trying to find me in this big huge mansion…”

Ann sat up a little bit, hand over her chest. “Here?”

“Oh no, not here. I was staying at a friend’s house in London for a work thing. Place was huge, easy to get lost in,” Shawn clarified. “Brian, Andrew, all of them were leaving back to Toronto and I didn’t want to go just yet. Part of it was because I was still pissed. Maybe if I had run into him first before he fell… If I hadn’t kicked him out of my room a few nights prior… If I was less of an asshole…”

“Maybe you would have slipped on the stairs,” Ann told him. “Maybe you guys would have had an even bigger argument later that would have ended your friendship. There’s no way to tell, and sometimes that’s what sucks the most.”

Huh. Most people tell him not to dwell on it. No wonder Ann was a shrink now.

“Losing someone is one of the hardest things we, as humans, have to face,” she said. “It’s not easy in the slightest. Besides, the grieving period takes about three to five years, so you - we - are still in the beginning stages of it. Thinking about the what ifs, what you want to change, what you wish you could say to Brian - all of that is normal.”

The two of them let those words settle for a moment. Shawn’s eyes were a little misty, and redirecting the topic was probably not going to help. But he laid his stuff out on the table.

“What about you?” he asked.

“Me?”

“Your what ifs?”

Ann paused, looking around the room. “What if I had put my Master’s to use and noticed the goddamn signs?”

Shawn watched her, hoping she would at least return the eye contact.

“I’m an expert in this shit,” she said. “I have the years of school, the degrees, and the licenses for detecting things like this. I only figured it out the moment her dad called me.”

“How do you detect when someone is suicidal?”

“In her case, she was elated. When someone makes that decision, they reach a state of euphoria because they know their pain is about to end.”

“But Stella was always-”

“Believe me, I know. I hadn’t talked to her since graduating in Toronto, so I thought she hadn’t changed at all. But I would see on her social media, she just moved back to her parents’ house in Florida, and she hinted that she wasn’t happy about it.”

As if Shawn couldn’t take another blow. Come to think of it, he never heard much about Stella’s home life. He didn’t even think that it could be a negative place for her.

“I was in Jacksonville for work,” Ann continued, “so I hit her up, and we met up for lunch. We talked for about an hour, and she said that I was always a good friend and college wife and that she’ll always love me. And my stone hearted ass just said ‘cool, you don’t suck’ and that was that. A month later, she’s as blue as the pills she took.”

“Ooo…” Shawn sighed, cringing at that mental image. Sweet, warm hearted Stella cold and lifeless. Call it morbid, awful thinking, but Shawn wished Brian looked like that in death instead of the bloody mess he turned out to be.

“Yeah. And her parents had her embalmed and put in an airtight casket, but that’s a whole other rant.” Ann waved it off and lied back down.

Shawn didn’t know what else to do except lie down as well. While sharing the stories of how their friends died, he couldn’t help but feel just a little bit closer to Ann. The first time they met, it took fighting tooth and nail to get her to open up. Now, Shawn felt okay silently reached for her hand, and tenderly holding it in his.

Both of them winded up at the same awards show. Both lost their best friends. Both got the same type of tattoo to honor them. Neither of them anticipated meeting again. This couldn’t be a coincidence.
