GOMBURZA (2023) - MMFF REVIEW
Tumblr media
“Vivan Los Filipinos. Mabuhay ang mga Filipino.”
This film is the story of the three martyr priests. Three Filipinos who were part of the native community who were once under Spanish colonial rule and oppression. If you have been updated, or have been listening in your elementary Philippine history classes, it’s GOMBURZA, not MAJOHA.
Despite it being produced by Jesuit Communications, the film was able to execute (No pun intended) a factual depiction on a turning point of Philippine history without overused emphasis of religion. It was able to capture how the Catholic faith was used as an instrument of oppression during the Spanish colonial period (This was especially ironic considering how return of the religious orders, including the Jesuits, were the reason for the silencing of the secularization movement). What also impressed me is that almost every single detail in the movie, even in the dialogue, came from actual events in history. It is evident that enough research was made to make this film as accurate as possible.
The film’s cinematography was able to capture life during the period whether it was amongst the Filipino liberals, the Spanish priests, the Governor-Generals, or even the three main characters in our story. With every other scenes of the film shifting from light to dark atmospheres, this symbolized the reality of Spanish colonization — warmth, acceptance, and friendship amongst fellow Filipinos; and ruthlessness, inhumanity, and oppression from the Spaniards (and even traitors). Adding emphasis to GomBurZa’s (2023) cinematography is its sound design. Just by feeling the cinema floor rumbling and the deeply-voiced voiceover in the film’s ending segment, this film can come to a point where it deserves its own IMAX screening.
Dante Rivero and Cedrick Juan showcase over-the-top stellar performances as Padre Mariano Gomez (played by Rivero) and Padre Jose Burgos (played by Juan). Both actors have embodied their roles, not only due to the fact that they, especially Juan, share a slight resemblance with the real life Mariano Gomez and Jose Burgos. It is also because that they were able to portray their emotions from having a friendly conversation, to later condemning their unfair arrest, trial, and death.
Pepe Diokno's time and effort in conducting research and including every important detail in the production is evident in the whole film itself, as it was not only ACTUALLY based on true events, but was able to evoke emotion and outrage, just like how the Filipinos of the 1870s did at the time.
With all of this said, GomBurZa (2023) is not only a history lesson, but also an immersion into the Spanish colonial rule and the lives of the three priests. Being a history nerd and a cinephile who has since learned the names of the three martyr priests as a little girl in elementary, I can definitely say that this was one of the only film experiences where I had witnessed the breaking of the fourth wall. The whole time I was in the cinema, it felt like I was part of their conversation, like I was a witness to their lives and execution.
What also added to this experience was that I watched the film on Rizal Day, and what better way to commemorate our national hero's contribution to Philippine independence than to learn about where it all started? Like what I always preached to my family:
Without GomBurZa, there will be no Jose Rizal. Without Jose Rizal, there would be no Andres Bonifacio. Without all of them, the Philippines and the Filipino would not exist.
GomBurZa (2023) is a cathartic experience that is definitely for the family. This film is a testament to the importance of appreciating and learning our history. Hopefully it serves as a reminder of our collective past, national identity, and the importance of our freedom.

Review & reaction for an assignment made by me Zion and assigned by sir jefferson and
Heneral Luna

[Movie Review] Seven Sundays
The Seven Sundays by Cathy Garcia-Molina is about a lonely father informed by his physician that he only has seven weeks to live. Encouraging his four busy adult children to share their last few Sundays with him.
Characterized by Ronaldo Valdez is the family patriarch who suffers from cancer and has limited remaining time on earth. Aga Muhlach played Allan Bonifacio, the eldest son of Captain Manuel. Playing the successful second child, Bryan Bonifacio is Dingdong Dantes. The third oldest and the only female sibling of the family, Cha Bonifacio. A martyr wife and a mother were greatly portrayed by actress Christine Reyes. Dexter Bonifacio, portrayed by Enrique Gill, is the youngest of the pack who lacks attention from his family.
The film was about the eccentricities of a Filipino family. The movie takes place in Captain Manuel’s home, which was all four children grew up most of their time. While the initial intention of the reunion is to have family time bonding, this is also when conflicts appear within the siblings. With everybody’s lives being opposite, the start of the fight was mere because of jealousy and the feeling of treason. This is when the history of ABC’s Family Store comes in. The misunderstanding of the two, Allan and Bryan, that Bryan wanted to sell the store which Allan opposed and caused the older to believe that because the younger is successful now, that the younger wanted to rub his wealth, to prove to Allan that his decision was a good idea, lead the family in chaos, crumbling of what the remains of their bond.
The film was not more on what family’s should be, but rather on what most families, especially in the Philippines, do. Fighting amongst siblings is common. With so many reasons to bicker, like inheritance, shares, new fights, and even past mistakes. Captain Manuel’s plan to bond with his children during his remaining time turned into a chaotic hole full of anger, frustration, and miscommunication.
The film can be easily predicted as it has the same algorithm as its predecessors. Where the climax is just a burst of every characters’ emotions and side story. Overall, the cinematography of the movie was good. Being able to have a dramatic storyline with a bit of comedy, a bit corny, but it depends on your preference. The storyline and I think the ending could have been better.

Exceeds Expectations
Better late than never... Heneral Luna opens claiming that this is a fictionalized biopic of one of Philippine's most important historical figures, Antonio Luna, for the sake of getting the modern audience into the history's bigger picture. In spite of being more intense and surprisingly humorous, the movie stays loyal to what this figure truly stands for. The war is brutal, over-the-top to bring up for visual flare, and their serious situations being often treated as sincere satires. How the film executed these ideas are just brilliant, it gets larger-than-life without feeling outlandish, towards the heart of defending the nation worth fighting for. The film is all about justifying their quote about the real enemy of this war is themselves. Although we see warfare with both the Philippine and American army attacking each other, this battle is basically the secondary concern here. The real detail of this war is how many soldiers chickening out from the battlefield and some officials wanted to work with the Americans. But of course, their real goal is independence; the movie makes a punchline out of those who aren't helping out, those who are just running away and those who are just isn't fond of Luna's aggressiveness. The film doesn't glamorize the character of Luna, either. Though his intentions are right, his rage could get out of hand which puts most of them off. But that also indicate that winning this revolution deserves more discipline than what they got. Back to the fact that this is taken a lot out of creative liberties, the movie fills this history with vast amount of sense of humor and violent panache. The violence is, again, over-the-top. At times it gets pretty symbolical, specifically the climax. The humor is clearly just satirizing to those characters who aren't being helpful and those who are afraid of facing Luna's rage once more. And when it's not trying to pull off any sense of levity, we just get to see the story flesh itself out more in the sidelines of its history and other characters. The filmmaking is stunning, slick and stylish. The production looks pretty neat. The movie is paced nicely even at times it's layered to different events, but puts itself together consistently. The acting is beyond impressive; specifically John Arcilla as Antonio Luna. He brings a genuine humanity, and at the same time, a really compelling sense of madness, which terrifically lives up to the complexity of its subject. The supporting also lends real gravity and even delight on screen, but it's Arcilla's show and that's more than enough of a worth seeing performance through out. Maybe some quibbles I could point out; maybe how the enemies are portrayed felt like they're written to be campy villains and maybe just one punchline in the film that felt like it belongs to a comedy skit. But again, these are quibbles and they can be debunked, even by myself. The former can be forgiven since they're technically not the main villains of this ordeal, while the latter is just a single scene and obviously designed to keep shaming the cowards at the battlefield. Anything else, there is so much to love in Heneral Luna. It's great, not only because it's humorous and visually interesting, but it's also a two-sided argument towards its history, not based on praising, but actually by criticism. Yes, this is a war movie that gets brutal, but the movie focuses on a meatier and more challenging side of the ordeal. And it pokes fun at some unwise decisions the people behind this war make, but what matters is the intention of its subject unable to die while he's still standing. Otherwise, it's just an ultimately entertaining film that exceeds expectations. Truly recommended.15 out of 20 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 9/10Hot-Headed Heroics!3xHCCH15 September 2015"Heneral Luna" tells us a more detailed account of the life of one of the revolutionary heroes we learn about in school, yet know practically nothing about -- Gen. Antonio Luna. Practically all we know about him is that he had a very bad temper which gained him a lot of enemies, eventually leading to his assassination. Aside from telling us specific situations where this legendary temper flared up, we also get to meet him more intimately as a leader, a soldier, as a son and as a man. Even from his intense penetrating gaze and formidable mustache in the poster alone, you already know John Arcilla will be excellent in this film. His comic timing was impeccable. It was a most vibrant performance of a most vivid man, making him really loom larger than life. He was over-the-top in his explosiveness, just the way Tarog wanted him to be. The way he was built up, we were ready for that climactic assassination scene, however outrageous the savagery. Mon Confiado was a picture of ironic calm as President Emilio Aguinaldo. The more movies we watch about the revolution certainly brings up more and more questions about the controversial Aguinaldo. Nonie Buencamino was so slimy as his treacherous surname-sake Felipe Buencamino. That nonchalant look on Lorenz Martinez face was so hateful as he essayed the role of the equally haughty Gen. Tomas Mascardo. It was also such a casting risk and surprise to put known comedians in such key roles, like Epy Quizon as Apolinario Mabini, Leo Martinez as Pedro Paterno and Ketchup Eusebio as the vengeful Capt. Pedro Janolino. I must admit their presence can be distracting in certain dramatic moments, particularly Eusebio. Or maybe that was their purpose -- to balance out the severe seriousness of those scenes. You immediately upfront that the filmmakers were aiming high for this film. The initial introductory texts were written in English, signifying intentions for this film to make the rounds of foreign film festivals. (I read that there were even certain reels with English subtitles shown in some more upscale cinemas.) The presence of disclaimers stating that this is a work of fiction inspired by fact could somehow raise an uneasy question as to how much fiction was in there mixed among the facts. This film will also grab you with its gorgeous cinematography. The images on the big screen had such vivid colors and innovative camera angles. The period production design and the costume design were meticulous in detail. During a beautifully-edited flashback sequence, there was a stylized scene about Rizal's execution that was so uniquely and hauntingly rendered. There are most gruesome and graphic special effects showing the violent brutality of warfare which will shock you. The historical storytelling was very clear, exciting and engaging from beginning to end, with a fresh graphic novel feel to it. Humor was such an unexpected yet integral element of the script, from those crisp off- color expletives of Luna to those sarcastic side comments of Lt. Rusca (Archie Alemania) and many more in between of different shades. The patriotic sentiments were very poetically-written, but the way they were delivered here felt sincere. They did not sound preachy or cheesy, like when such lines were mouthed by Robin Padilla in "Bonifacio" or Jeorge E.R. Ejército in "El Presidente". Just like a Marvel film, there was an extra scene in the middle of the closing credits, suggesting a next film featuring Paulo Avelino as Gen. Gregorio del Pilar. There was also a brief cameo appearance of Benjamin Alves as a young Manuel L. Quezon, hinting at a possible trilogy. This is a very exciting plan indeed which we all hope will materialize given the success of "Heneral Luna". I hear this is also under consideration of being submitted for Oscar consideration, and I support that campaign. The screening I caught today was a full-house despite being 1:30 in the afternoon on a weekday. It was really gratifying to see a quality Filipino film have commercial success even if it was not an inane comedy or "kilig" teen flick with box-office stars in the cast. Kudos to Artikulo Uno Productions and director-film editor-musical scorer Jerrold Tarog for coming up with what may just be the best, certainly the most audacious, Filipino film released this year to date. Like Gen. Luna, this film leads a mad charge on horseback with a raised fist against Filipinos who say they love their country yet look out for their personal interests first. Let's hope this strong message hits its targets.

Eight K Drama: Descendants of the Sun
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” –Mahatma Gandhi
When you ask for a K Drama recommendation, Descendants of the Sun will surely make the list. This drama is just one of the best there is. And I gotta say that I can watch this again and again and I won’t get tired of it. Yes, that’s how good this drama is! You will love all the characters not just the main leads and the OSTs are all so good. DOTS lived up to the hype and I’m happy that I give it a shot.
Synopsis
The story revolves around the lives of doctors and soldiers sent to the fictional country of Uruk to serve. The doctors are sent there for a medical mission while the soldiers are there for peacekeeping operations. What makes the story more interesting is that it is in Uruk that Dr. Kang Mo Yeon and Captain Yoo Si Jin met again; the two first met in Seoul and went on dates until they realized that their jobs are making it hard for their relationship to work. Will this reunion means a chance for them to rekindle their romance or will this just show how different their principles in life are?
The aspect in this drama that I can relate the most is public service (although I really hope it was the romance part, lol). As you can see, the main characters here are both public servants – a doctor and a soldier. Although both are fighting to save lives, they have different methods. And it is interesting to watch how their principles collide and how they managed to reach a common ground. I guess it’s not just their love for each other that led them to reach a common ground but also the sense of maturity and awareness of how big the responsibility that they have for their countrymen. They were able to find their selves through serving other people and I aspire that kind of growth too (with a bonus of romance hihi).
I always have high regards for soldiers because they literally have a lot to sacrifice for the sake of our country. And even before they become one, they have to go through a lot of difficult trainings so I think they deserve more credit than they are given. I admire the sense of patriotism that they have. Like what one of our national heroes, Andres Bonifacio, said “Aling pag-big pa ang hihigit kaya sa pagkadalisay at pagkadakila gaya ng pag-ibig sa tinubuang lupa? Aling pag-ibig pa? Wala na nga, wala” (There is no other kind of love that is purer and greater than the love one has for their mother country; English translation is mine) And I was able to see that strong sense of patriotism in the show especially from the second male lead, Sergeant Major Seo Dae-Young who was literally asked to give up his work in the army just for him to get the approval of his girlfriend’s father and I admired the decision he made (I don’t wanna spoil it so just watch it hehe). I also love how being in the army changed the life of Private First Class Kim Ki-Bum (who later promoted as Staff Sergeant) since before the army, his life has no direction and being a soldier gave him a purpose and made him a better person. And of course, the lead character Captain Yoo Si Jin who is always willing to give it his all for the sake of his country; he had his moments of being face to face with death because of his job but in the end he chooses to stay because public service is his true calling. For me, nothing makes a man more attractive than his willingness to serve his country.
On the other hand, there’s the medical team. As I’ve mentioned on this blog countless of times before, it was once my dream to become a doctor (and until now, there’s a part in my heart that says I still want to) that’s why doctors in dramas or movies seem to be very fascinating to me. That profession requires a lot of time and effort because the responsibility that will come along with one’s medical license is heavy: literally a person’s life is in your hands. And most of us tend to look at doctors as genius and they should never make a mistake, right? Sometimes we tend to forgot that they are also human. The episodes 7-9 (if I remembered it correctly) show us how doctors would response if given an emergency situation in a different environment. Since the setting of the show is in the fictional country of Uruk, the medical team sent there has fewer or limited resources than when they are in an actual hospital. An earthquake happened and it was really destructive; a lot of people were injured and some of them even died. Those episodes showed yet again another contrast in the principles of a soldier and a doctor – when to save a life and when to take one and since they are in a dangerous and risky situation, they really have to choose. One of the most heartbreaking scenes from this drama is when they are rescuing two people on the site but they only have to save one of them since the slab and metal that injured them were connected; making that choice was really painful for them and while I was watching the scene unfolds, I shed a few tears. Another scene that tackles about making a choice is when they rescued a very critical patient who badly needs a surgery but if they will travel him to the medicube he might not make it so they’ve decided to do the surgery at the site. While it may seem risky, at least they are doing their very best to save the patient. I just can’t imagine how painful it is for a doctor in those situations to make a choice…if it were me, I don’t think I can handle the situation well. This drama also shows that doctors are humans too and sometimes they make decisions that seem not right but that doesn’t mean that they are bad – they make mistakes too but what’s important is for them to learn from it and do better. Chi Hoon (another doctor) found a survivor and he tried his best to get him out but a series of aftershocks happened and it scared him since his expertise is in medicine and not in rescue operations so he decided to get out of the site and told a soldier that he found a survivor. He felt really bad with what he did. Later on, that survivor confronted him and told him that a real doctor does not abandon his patient. I felt bad for him though even if I also felt like he was a bit of a coward for just running away. Still, I understand his side. He actually compensate for that big time when he didn’t give up on a patient infected by a contagious virus even if it means he might get infected as well and to make the situation worse, the patient bit him reflexively which means a higher chance for him to get infected by the virus. He did not give up on reviving that patient when it went into seizures. I admired that he went an extra mile for this. You see, doctors are humans too and we should learn to appreciate them more.
Overall, I love this drama. It was great combination of romance, action, thrill and philosophy. I love how the principles of soldiers and doctors seem to be different yet still have similarities. I can also relate with the public service aspect since I currently work in a government institution and I know that it is not easy. We don’t receive a salary as high as those from the private sector and yet we’re as tired as them too. But what keeps us going is the love for country. Like the quote mentioned above, public service is indeed the best way to find yourself for it will allow you to grow and become a better person. I hope I can be as brave, dedicated, motivated, passionate and skillful as Captain Yoo Si Jin, Dr. Kang Mo Yeon and the rest of the members of the army and medical team that the drama showed. DOTS is the k drama that you will not hesitate to watch again and again. Definitely one of my faves of all time.
Before I end this blog post, I will share some of my favorite quotes from the drama:
“War is easy while peace is always an issue. Perhaps that’s why dictators always live long” –Captain Yoo Si Jin
“Soldiers always live with a shroud on. When they die in a nameless land for the sake of their country, the place of their death become their grave and their uniform become their shroud. This should be every soldier’s mindset every time they put down their uniform. Therefore, be honorable at every moment – there’s no reason to fall short”
“I’ve been given the privilege to be a doctor, I faithfully pledge my life to serve humanity. The health and life of my patient will always be my priority. I will faithfully carry out my duties regardless of the patient’s race, religion or nationality. I will not use my knowledge inhumanely even when I’m under threat. I hereby take this oath on my account and on behalf of my honour” -Doctor Kang Mo Yeon
“Dating is when things that ‘I can do myself’ are done by the other person” –Captain Yoo Si Jin
“Doctors don’t have boyfriends because they’re too busy.” -Captain Yoo Si Jin
“Soldiers don’t have girlfriends because it’s too hard (too much work).” -Doctor Kang Mo Yeon

The Best Tv Shows 2020, So Far
Tumblr media
TV and streaming series and motion pictures have performed a huge service so greatly this year in providing some much-needed escapism in a world crippled by wellness.
To help viewers still restrained to their homes navigate the latest offerings, we assembled all of the Certified Fresh series and upcoming tv programs 2020 — the season premieres that occurred January through the present that is Fresh with at least 20 critics reviews (five of those being from Top Critics).
From 1999 on, viewers were lucky enough to be treated to what many referred to as “The Golden Age of Television.” Shows like The Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones brought a previously unheard-of level of quality to the small screen, and things like Lost DVD box sets and Stranger Things on Netflix taught people how to binge-watch.
We’re not even a quarter of the way into 2020 yet, but given the sheer volume of new TV releases out there on a weekly basis, we are coming up with the discussion platform that allows live TV audiences to join the chat rooms for ongoing TV shows.

Movie Review “Heneral Luna”
Antonio Luna is a brave general who is ready to fight in his homeland They faces resistance from his own countrymen as he fights for freedom during the Philippine-American War. Many people are angry with him because of the arrogance that he has to pay for everything he or she generals are generating..
Because of his leadership of the Philippine soldiers against the american colonies his men had been well organized, Antonio Luna made his soldiers wear a single uniform for the symbol of unity
Because the Filipinos are united to fight the countryside against those who intend to occupy it. Because Andres Bonifacio can defended the Philippines against the Spaniards. It is also possible to fight the Philippines against the American have plan to cover it.
Because they accepted the message that the Spanish had sold the Philippines on Americans and that was begins of Philippines-American war.

A REVIEW - GOYO, ANG BATANG HENERAL, the middle part of a planned trilogy, is visually impressive. If not for the presence of Filipino actors, you could imagine it as a European or American big-budget production. Technicals are top-notch and the learnings from HENERAL LUNA were definitely applied here. Production design and costumes looked great. Sound design and audio were impeccable. And the movie had scale and lavishness not seen since HIMALA or ORO PLATA MATA. TBA spent a lot and it’s all on screen. Whereas I thought HENERAL LUNA was slightly uneven in its staging, GOYO is confident and sure. Tonally they are also opposites with LUNA being bombastic and fiery while GOYO is quieter and conflicted, reflecting the main characters as history remembers them. The periods of their lives covered also differed with LUNA approaching Shakespearean levels of treachery and scheming during the waning years of Spanish rule while GOYO is the calmer but no less dangerous period of the calm before the storm between the end of the Spanish regime and the start of US colonization. The tonality and ultimate choice of character to follow gives LUNA an advantage as his is a more compelling narrative. Also the storytelling choices to focus on the political narrative equally with the personal creates its own complications. I personally would have preferred a more distinct POV following GOYO and his inner demons but the historical perspective is just as interesting as chronicled by Joven [Aaron Villafor]. Would I watch it again? Yes. Would I recommend it to others? Absolutely. Does the film impress and live up to it’s ambition? Yes and Yes for the most part because it also set a very high bar. My personal taste hinges on my like or dislike of the character. I was never a fan of Aguinaldo and didn’t think much of Del Pilar as I was always more partial to Bonifacio and Mabini [charismatically portrayed in both movies by Epy Quizon]. But I thought Mon Confiado brought Aguinaldo to despicable life while Paulo Avelino captured the naivete, cockiness and youthful arrogance that also doomed Goyo, the character. Busting Buybust
youtube
Paki abangan at paki pagabalahan just in case panoorin ninyo. Hindi ko rin sure if pati ‘yung bote ng San Mig Pale na very common sa action films e may cameo rin in a very interesting and striking way.
So, let’s begin, shall we?
Dagdag pa nila, almost sumuko sila kasi nga akala ni Matti they got it, pero nung ni-review niya, olats daw. And that led the whole team to slay it at 3 AM on the second day.
Yes and no. Ambitious siya at naitawid naman nila ito pero it was just too much for me. Mas nahatak pa nga ako nung struggle to the finish line ni Yatco (Brandon Vera) kasi sobrang klaro ng goal niya. He believe he is invicible just because of a mere tansan dangling on his neck. Perfect din ang casting niya for the role kasi nga naman ang dami niyang hanash bago siya na headshot ni Chongki.  Ang pag-aspire to be a badass female action star is something that Anne Curtis embraced with all that she can. Maliban sa pagka-disturbed ko sa accent niya na mala-burgis, na hindi ko alam kung sinadya ba talaga para mas maipakita ‘yung pagbaklas ng stereotype sa mga parak, ‘yung pagka-astig has a lot of room for growth PERO I have to give it to her. We have to give that to her kasi hindi siya madali in all levels. She opened the door for mainstream and even indie actresses na eto na #ItsAboutTime.
Sobrang symbolic ng mga tao na trying to fight fairly pero ended up with a really, really bad ending just because they played everything the right and dignified way. Abangan in a bit! Susunod.
‘Yung galit nila bilang tao na nag-transform sa kanila into mala-hayop and eventually, naging asal-hayop. Sa unang tingin, iisipin mo it’s just about poverty --na mahirap sila kaya ‘yung asal nila e wala sa lugar. Ang argument dito e, hunger is the basic conflict of people, ‘di ba? E sino ba ‘yung gutom madalas? ‘Yung walang makain? I strongly disagree. Hunger is highly subjective. You may be so full but you still feel hungry --hungry for power, hunger for wealth, hungry for fame.
Sabi nila ang dami na raw bagong ganap in just a matter of years. Siguro kasi masyado nating isinapuso ‘yung famous line na “Jail the pusher. Save the user” so puro pushers lang pero ‘yung pinaka ugat ng lahat e hindi natin mabunot-bunot. Bakit kaya ganun? Bakit ang daming escort ni Boss Chief pati ng mga anak niyang legit at illegitimate mula office hanggang casino pati na rin pagsho-shopping and all those glitz and glam life they live? Pero bakit ‘pag respondihan sa mga critical operations against the nationwide campaign against drugs, ang daming casualties. Ang daming hindi maipaliwanag na kaganapan. Nagtatanong lang naman. Nagbabakasakali lang naman.
Nakakagalit. Nakakalungkot. Nakakapangilabot. Pero sa totoong buhay, Gracia Ni Maria is our everyday cup of tea. Wala lang duguan. Wala lang patayan. Wala lang barilan kasi nga, may pinag-aralan tayo kuno. May kabihasnan. May diginidad. ‘Yung SAF 44 at ‘yung Maguindanao massacre  na sobrang nagpatunay kung gaano kalala ang lagay ng ating safety and security issues in exchange of ruling the land. ‘Yung Yolanda kung saan sobrang fucked up ‘yung reports ng mga namatay just because it’s more convenient to do so.
#ItsAboutTime to be change instead of hanging onto the promise na change is coming. You really have to get your hands dirty kasi if you play if fair, putangina.
So, ano na? #ItsAboutTime na. Tara. Two years lang naman e. Hahaha. Lelelelelels. Luhluhluhuhuhuhuhu.  PS: Habang pinanood ko ‘tong Buybust, flashes of Kuchera keep popping in my head, heart and spirit. Not meant for mainstream consumption kasi ‘yung talas at tagos niya sagad-buto. But, I still hope one day, we’d be able to watch films like these two and tell ourselves that indeed, change has come. One day. One day at a time.

What Has Been Lost All Along? “Ang Nawawala” Movie Review
If you’re a fan of the local independent scene be it movies or music, this Marie Jamora film is easy to fall in love with.  A mixture of pain, love, and a tinge of hope to do things right again; Ang Nawawala takes you to a rollercoaster of emotions whilst unraveling the not-so-silent-life of Gibson Bonifacio.
Tumblr media
Having been away for three years, 20 year-old Gibson (Dominic Roco) comes home to his dysfunctional family only to be reminded him of what’s still missing and why he left. His twin, Jamie (Felix Roco) died in an accident when they were 10  – a tragedy that still weighs heavily on him, forcing him to hide behind his camera as a way of dealing with grief.
The two lead actors gave justice for Jamora’s exceptional storyline for ‘Ang Nawawala’. During its anniversary of its release last August in Katipunan Route 196, Jamora confessed that the Roco brothers weren’t her first choice to play the role; rather she held auditions and opted to shoot her twin-based film with just one actor to portray both. But thank heavens fo the one who pitched the Roco twins—they owned the characters just right before they auditioned in front of Jamora herself.
Tumblr media
The film will give you a taste of what indie is like. Settings are mostly local bars where homegrown bands were discovered, some shots are overexposed to put more weight in the scene, and some scenes have no music at all to depict that silence is heavier than all noises combined.
Moreover, OST is 10/10 for Jamora picked the right songs from the right artists to be put in the right scenes. From the electric-duo Tarisus to heart-wrenching lyrics of Ebe Dancel, the movie let the music speak for all the words Gibson wasn’t able to say.
The heaviest scene for me sees the twins final moments together in a cemetery where Gibson finally decides to free himself from guilt and self-hatred. The execution of the scene was so heavy; you need to hold your breath. The twins said their goodbyes without uttering a word. Instead, they took turns in puffing smoke—until it’s over—until Jamie is already gone.
Tumblr media
Ang Nawawala took indie to the next level by tackling the delicate matter of internal conflict and the thin line that separates life and death. People are struggling to fight the voices in their heads telling them to cross it. This movie depicts that if something is lost, it might take a while, but eventually, you will find the courage to deal with it and move forward.

Were you alone today? No. My siblings are at home with me and my parents will be arriving home from their holiday later today, but I’m also wishing I had other company.
Who was the last person you saw today? My sister.
What do you need to let go of? I don’t let go of things, and that’s exactly the problem with this. But maybe I need to let go of everything that happened in 2015? I keep looking back at that time and sharing stories despite Gab having to tell me that she hates that time. I never learn.
What movie are you looking forward to? I don’t think there are good ones I’m excited about lately.
Have you played the lottery? Nope.
What recently happened that made you proud of yourself? I was able to park in a busy road in that it required me to briefly take up a lane lol. I parked really well too, I’ll never forget it HAH
Who did you see the most today? My siblings, but technically I stayed locked up in my room for most of the day.
How much is gasoline per gallon? I don’t keep track of that at all...I just pay and hope my gas increases by 2-3 bars...
What was your horoscope today? Was it accurate? I’ve never seriously checked my horoscope, but I do always find myself reading the ones all over Twitter.
What are you most afraid of? Not finding a stable job and not earning the amount of money that would make me and my family happy.
What’s the biggest thing you have going on? My relationship. I value that more than anything; it’s precious to me and it’s important that I keep it healthy.
What did you accomplish today? I had to drive out to get something printed today for my parents. Then the day took a turn for the worst and I managed to not kill myself, which was nice.
Did you act your age today? Probably not. I felt 11 today.
How busy was your day today? Not busy at all, though I had intended it to be. Today was supposed to be working for my Journ paper and review for my Physics midterm, but I nearly ended up doing something stupid instead and now Gab’s keeping close tabs on me.
What is your address? Yes.
What do you wish there was less of in the world? Bad drivers.
What is stopping you? From?
What were your chores today? None, other than the stuff I had to get printed.
What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud? The conversation Angela and I had yesterday. I don’t have to say what it was about, suffice it to say it made my day :-(
Who did you eat dinner with? I ate by myself tonight.
How did you make a difference in the world today? I went to a rundown, super sketchy computer shop today, but I made sure to greet and be nice to the one operating it who probably gets shitty, rowdy male customers every day.
What is one thing you take with you everywhere? My phone and wallet.
The last gift I’ve given was ____. A box of doughnuts for my girlfriend’s younger sisters.  Ever wake up early on Saturdays to go Garage Sale shopping? Hmm no. Not a lot of garage sales that happen in my neighborhood...
When was the last time you got a nose bleed? I’ve never had my nose bleed.
Do you have any picture frames without a picture in them? No, I don’t really keep picture frames, let alone buy them.
Do you keep magazines by your toilet? We don’t. I bring my phone to the toilet mainly haha.
What did you last take a picture of with your camera? My dad asked me to get his work folders for him and I took a picture of them to make sure I got the right ones.
The last time you got dressed up, where did you go? Gab and I were celebrating our first anniversary and we decided to go to Bonifacio High Street!!! We ate at this French restaurant that was probably too fancy for us but fuck it, we wanted to treat ourselves.
Are you proud of who you are? I mean if I wasn’t then who would?
If you were a waiter/waitress, would you make good tips? Maybe. I’m friendly if I have to, but I’m also super terrible at human interaction that I really just don’t know how well I’d fare.
Forget about toppings. What type of CRUST do you like on pizzas? Stuff that shit with mozzarella. I hate thin crust, too.
Have you ever stolen a road sign or traffic barrier? Nah because 1) I’m too much of a wuss and 2) I don’t know what I’d do with them after...
Captain Crunch vs. Count Chocula: Who makes the better cereal? I don’t like either.  <-
Would you prefer an ice cream sundae or an ice cream cone? Cone! Makes me feel like a kid again.
Is chapstick a necessity for you? Not really.
What are the best kind of Girl Scout cookies? I’ve never tried any of those.
Do you constantly doubt yourself? Yup, I’m your girl.
Do you like to have ice in your drinks? Yeah, always. On my cruise last year I didn’t know Chinese people don’t put ice in their drinks, so a few days of getting lukewarm water nearly drove me mad. Apparently it’s unusual to ask for ice??? But I needed my cold water and so I got just that.
What did you eat for breakfast? Leftover pork chop from last night.
What song are you most likely to sing in the shower? I usually sing whatever I was listening to just before getting in.
Can you cross your eyes? Yup.
When was the last time you went to the dentist? June for a physical whatever that I needed before getting to enroll in my school.
If a color represented your mood right now what color would it be and why? Dirty white. I feel as if I’m fading, and that’s just the color I identify with.
