The Goddess Cotys in the Written Sources

So to keep this post from being this long-winded monstrosity, I'm going to break it up into multiple parts: the first series of posts will be about how she appears in ancient written sources, the second series will be about Aphrodite Urania of the Bosporan Kingdom, and the final series will be about the Gundestrup Cauldron and how I interpret these three items as a unit.

We'll start by going through the written evidence sited by William Smith's "A Dictionary of Greek and Roman biography and mythology" from around 1873 - cuz it's free and available online.

Strabo 10.3

So there's a few paragraphs in Strabo 10.3 that I think are very interesting for folks interested in Thracian stuff, but I'll focus on Cotys and the Cotytian rites.

In the paragraphs leading up to this excerpt, Strabo takes time to describe a series of different kinds of rites for different gods, but focuses on Dionysus, Rhea, and Cybele, and largely describes what seem to be boisterous musical events in mountains (if someone can read Greek, feel free to correct me).

From paragraph 16:

The rites called Cotytia, and Bendideia,39 celebrated among the Thracians, resemble these. The Orphic ceremonies had their origin among these people. Æschylus mentions the goddess Cotys, and the instruments used in her worship among the Edoni.40 For after saying, “ O divine Cotys, goddess of the Edoni,

With the instruments of the mountain worship;"immediately introduces the followers of Dionysus,

” “‘one holding the bombyces, the admirable work of the turner, with the fingers makes the loud notes resound, exciting frenzy; another makes the brass-bound cotylæ to re-echo.’” And in another passage; “‘The song of victory is poured forth; invisible mimes low and bellow from time to time like bulls, inspiring fear, and the echo of the drum rolls along like the noise of subterranean thunder;’41”

I used this one out of the different translations Perseus has because a few Hellenic polytheists I know explained that the Greek describes music akin to a war cry, so I wanted to make sure that was emphasized. I won't spend a lot of time on this one because I feel it's self-evident, but from here it looks like we're dealing with a goddess tied to mountains and victory - possibly military victory.

Apricot jam with walnut kernels!!! It's not just delicious! It bombyces delicious!!!Абрикосовое варенье с ядрами грецких орехов!!! Это не просто вкусно! Это бомбически вкусно!!! 

Приготовление: Абрикосы 3 кг. очищенные от косточек засыпаем тремя кг. сахара. Оставляем до утра, чтобы абрикосы дали сок. Ядра грецких орехов промываем в тёплой воде три раза, затем заливаем водой и оставляем так же до утра. 

 День второй:    Абрикосы варим на среднем огне до полного растворения сахара, затем засыпаем ядра грецких орехов и еще провариваем в течении 30 минут. Оставляем до утра. 

День третий: Продолжаем варить варенье до загустения. Если не густеет добавляем Агар-Агар, растворив его в абрикосовом сиропе в отдельной таре. Затем выливаем сироп с Агар-Агаром в варенье и провариваем 5 минут. Если варить дольше, то эффект загустения и желирования варенья пропадает. Разливаем варенье по банкам и закручиваем банки. Варенье готово. Приятного чаепития в длинные зимние вечера!
