Lorenzo De Silvestri: Lorenzo De Silvestri's equalizer in the dying minutes helped Bologna avoid a home defeat as they tied with Genoa 1-1 on Friday.Bologna are flying high this term as head coach Thiago Motta guided them to an unexpected fifth-place while Genoa occasionally played as a giant-killer by holding Juventus and Inter Milan under 2006 World Cup winner Alberto Gilardino, reported Xinhua. Genoa went ahead in the 20th minute with Albert Gudmundsson's free kick from a tricky angle. Palazzo della Mercanzia 🏢

🇮🇹Il Palazzo della Mercanzia di Bologna, anche detto Loggia dei Mercanti o Palazzo del Carrobbio, si affaccia sull'omonima piazza. Dalla fine del XIV secolo alla fine del XVIII è stato la sede dell'Universitas mercatorum (Foro dei Mercanti) e di alcune Corporazioni. A partire dal 1797, con l'occupazione francese, diviene la sede della Camera di Commercio.

🇬🇧The Palazzo della Mercanzia in Bologna, also known as the Loggia dei Mercanti or Palazzo del Carrobbio, overlooks the square of the same name. From the end of the 14th century to the end of the 18th it was the seat of the Universitas mercatorum (Forum of Merchants) and of some Corporations. From 1797, with the French occupation, it became the seat of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mihajlovic, Bologna’s Spirit Animal

Season Preview - 2019/2020

Bologna looked all but doomed for large parts of last season, playing dour football under Pippo Inzaghi who’d gotten the job on the back of a respectable showing with Venezia. A squad bereft of creativity and a dearth in quality. By week 30, they’d spent 20 of the past weeks in 18th place, but by the season’s end they were in the top 10. Those last 8 games yielded 17 points for Bologna and no matter how you crunch the numbers, it’s always impressive. What sparked such a turnaround? It’s difficult to argue against crediting Sergeant Sinisa.

After Inzaghi’s dismissal, Bologna were not only winning under Mihajlovic, but also playing free-flowing, attacking football. Riccardo Orsolini came to life and started to fulfill some of the promise he showed at Ascoli; he ended up as the club’s top scorer with 10 (including Coppa Italia). Santander popped up with important goals and Pulgar, the set piece specialist, did well enough to earn himself a move to Fiorentina in the summer. 

Mihajlovic has had a checkered managerial career to date, alternating highs and lows but with all-out-attack the common denominator. Unsurprisingly, some strikers/forwards have enjoyed their best seasons under the Serb; Belotti at Torino for example. Conversely, some Mihajlovic teams endure a complicated relationship with defending. 

After the salvation of Bologna, Mihajlovic was a man in demand. Roma was rumoured which, after Milan, would have been another opportunity at a big club. It raised eyebrows then when he chose to stay at Bologna. Something obviously clicked with the rossoblu last term, so perhaps Sinisa made his decision with his heart this time. 

Weeks later though, the shocking news emerged that Mihajlovic had been diagnosed with leukemia. He and the club were quick to point out that he was staying on in charge of the team, despite undergoing chemotherapy. A warrior in every sense - on the pitch, on the bench, in life. Although Mihajlovic has never been free from controversies throughout his career, his fighting spirit is admirable and inspiring. 

The team now have a obvious motivation to win and dedicate their success to their warrior manager battling a serious illness. I’d be surprised, however, if there weren’t any clouds of concern floating somewhere over the Stadio Dall’Ara. How will the board deal with a string of poor results? Will they show compassion or exercise their ruthless business right? Of course Mihajlovic has his staff working tirelessly on his behalf, but how will it affect the players to have the coach absent while he’s in and out of hospital? There isn’t much precedent for such circumstances.

The transfer campaign saw a small handful of players come in; interesting youngsters such as Japanese defender, Tomiyasu. A decent find - as solid in preseason as he is in build, he should find himself a starting slot in a defence that otherwise won’t be keeping many opposition attackers up at night. Skov Olsen arrives carrying buckets of goals and lots of promise, although players have recently found the transition from Danish Superliga to Serie A challenging - at 19 he’s at least young enough to be groomed. Other signings include Dutch midfielder, Schouten, and Club Brugge defender, Denswil, who’s represented the Netherlands at every imaginable level, except full senior. 

Overall the squad was thinned out with more departures than arrivals, none of whom will be missed too much apart from Pulgar. One Chilean replaces another, Gary Medel makes a return to Serie A to toughen up the midfield alongside Dzemaili, Poli, and Soriano. Up front, Orsolini hopes to continue his growth and “explode” as they say in Italy, while Sansone will be looking for traction and consistency after doing well in Spain. Palacio, still going at 37, his experience is valuable, but his physical contributions throughout a long season could be sporadic. 

The Felsinei’s thrilling surge in the final rounds of 2018/19 and Mihajlovic’s health problems have detracted from vulnerabilities. Several others in that pack between mid-table mediocrity and relegation hustlers have, on paper, strengthened but few have singled out Bologna as being in danger of going down. How thin the ice they skate will be determined by how bad or less bad the promoted teams turn out to be. They’ll need to be careful; Balotelli’s Brescia, possibly the best of the new boys, might bite them in the long run. They’ll certainly want to get the better of Udinese and local rivals Parma, who are probably the most relatable teams. 

Bologna will need to embody all of Mihajlovic’s grit to get them through the current campaign comfortably. Sinisa will be a little concerned, though, that his surprise appearance on the bench for the opening day, like an escaped patient, wasn’t enough to galvanize the team to victory against a 10-man Verona.
