Radical Happiness: Moments of Collective Joy in a Pilates/Stretch/Nordic Walking Class
The thought provoking talk by #LynneSegal (at The Showroom, Sheffield) on her book 'Radical Happiness: Moments of Collective Joy' really struck a chord with me. As a #BodyControlPilates teacher I have, over the years, found that it is not merely a case of teaching a few exercises to help people move with more ease, but it requires a good deal of listening and understanding, giving and caring. I feel a sense of responsibility for my clients and their welfare and I enjoy being able to give them the skills to move with greater ease. Furthermore the 14 groups I teach have become caring 'communities' who share a sense of joy exercising together, not only sharing the class but developing an understanding of each other and caring for each other. We have a lot of fun too! Listening to Lynne Segal last night allowed me to put a name to the feeling that makes my job so rewarding - it is quite simply a sense of collective joy. I feel lucky to enjoy this so-called 'job'of mine so much!

ACCIDENTALLY STYLISH - When you have a strong body, style is often accidental. It can sometimes be an unintended consequence, even if it’s just a regular day at the gym. Today’s feature is my new favourite form of exercise- Pilates! Pilates targets our deepest muscles responsible for moving, sitting, and standing correctly. It also conditions our minds at the same time as our bodies.
We all know of the Grand Old Gym- we all love sweats and casual, fun colour blocks in our workout attire, cool socks, or a pretty hair band, the latest cool sneakers, and we’re good to go! Many of us would even count shopping as a “cardio” workout, but I reckon that maintaining a healthy, strong body is an even more wonderful feeling than shopping hard for clothes that you don’t think flatter your body yet! I am currently shopping for a heathy diet and exercise, which are the best treats I could give myself. Start one step at a time, and you will get there. I will be posting occasionally about health, tasty homemade smoothie recipes that you could try out, and exciting workouts. Also, if you aren’t a gym person, just buy a mat to use at home, and do some Pilates or Yoga. As you’ve seen above, it does help a lot of aspects of your life, and your body. :)

100 DAYS OF PILATES - DAY 4 It is so easy to skip your Pilates practice. So easy to let things slide and let the other stuff in life get in the way of looking after your body. As a teacher people expect you to be 'fit' and think you practise Pilates every day... well, I haven't been doing that for a while. Existing instead on 'Pilates snacks', i.e. snatched moments when I demonstrate exercises in classes, 10 minutes warm up before a class, maybe half an hour in the evening WHEN I HAVE (read that as MAKE) TIME. That's enough of that pattern! My job is to teach PILATES, but more than that, I owe it to myself to look after my mind and body - it is after all the reason I decided to train as a teacher ... I love Pilates! So, I have made a commitment to myself to practise Pilates for 1 hour every day for the next 100 days. I am on day 4 today ... Going to do my practice in the garden - blue sky, sunshine, birds (lawn mowers and strimmers!) and indulge in what I know is good for my mind and body.
