Macron's fiery Sorbonne speech targets summering American Millennials

It’s no coincidence that Emmanuel Macron gave a fiery speech about the threats facing Europe the same week that American Millennials in New York, LA, and Miami began talking about booking their one-way flights to the continent. "There is a risk our Europe could die - we are not equipped to face the risks," Macron said, referring to the dietary allergies, alternative milk needs, and tedious conversations of trust-funded, unemployed young adults who will begin their summer in Paris to attend a museum benefit that spills into a large dinner party with several professional photographers before traveling to Puglia, Comporta, or Ibiza where they will subsist on ‘beautiful tomatoes,’ flat whites, and MDMA. 

Europe has struggled with illegal immigration for decades, and there is no more pressing illegal immigration threat than American Millennials who have decided that being unemployed in Europe is less distressing for their parents than being unemployed in Williamsburg. Google searches for ‘how long can I stay in EU without passport’ spiked in late-April among Americans who have not yet bought a Portuguese passport from a guy who used to run a turnkey Burning Man camp who is now running a Golden Visa scheme in Lisbon. “Our Europe today is mortal,” Macron said. “It can die and that depends solely on our choices,” the choices being whether or not to search and detain for ketamine at customs and how to clearly define tipping protocol in restaurants. 

“It used to be enough to spend a couple weeks in Italy in July,” observes Coco, a 34-year-old retired gallery founder who is on the board of several art-related non-profits that she instructed her unpaid interns to start. “But now it gets so hot in Europe in July that everyone is going in June and even like, May.” Coco has several weddings and dinner parties in various coastal destinations in Europe in June, but she has not yet RSVP’d nor has she booked any travel. “I know I’m going to go, but I’ve just been too busy to look at the dates or book anything,” she says, absently picking some kind of beige matter from the left eye of her toy goldendoodle. Macron at one point asserts in his speech that Europe is “too slow and lacks ambition,” referring directly to Coco’s ambivalent European travel plans. 

Uncertainty permeates the vibe in Europe right now, not because of a military threat posed by a giant, angry country with cocked nukes driven by a weak-minded Cold War relic, but because every Millennial in New York, Miami and Los Angeles has expressed their intention to occupy Europe without declaring the targets. 

“Is very stressful,” says Aldo Melpignano, the proprietor of Borgo Egnazia, a trendy boutique hotel in Puglia that for Europeans costs €120 a night and charges 30something Americans visiting from coastal zipcodes $970. “I see the hashtags on the Instagram, like, I’m coming for your @borgoegnazia,” he says. “Va bene, Allison, when you gonna come for us, and are you gonna come with that stupid capello?” says Aldo while making a pinched-fingers emoji with one hand and pointing to his head with the other. Hotel, coffee shop, organic market, and narcotics purveyors all over Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal have echoed this desire for more resolute planning and fewer hats from the demographic that funds the less productive but more desirable EU countries.  

"We must produce more, we must produce faster, and we must produce as Europeans," Macron said, a rallying cry to European DJs to sample only vocals that were recorded in native European languages.  

“Europe must show that it is never a vassal of the United States and that it also knows how to talk to all the other regions of the world," Macron said, refuting the irrefutable fact that Europe has become a summer camp for unproductive younger Americans and suggesting that they be immediately deported to Bodrum or Izmir upon landing at CDG, MXP, and LIS. 

“This is a betrayal of our values that ultimately leads us to dependency on other counties,” Macron said, making an observation about Europe’s frustration with having to work between May and August in order to show American Millennials how to correctly tap their credit card on puzzling European payment terminals.

“Europe must become capable of defending its interests, with its allies by our side whenever they are willing, and alone if necessary,” said Macron, in defense of French baristas who do not like working with oat milk. Taking a hands-on approach to ensuring the EU’s “ability to ensure our security” Macron and his wife will begin their Summer at a wedding in the Aeolian Islands in early June, float around Sicily or Puglia the following week, head to Bonjuk Bay for an appearance of prominent LA-based DJ, RICHE, and then couch-surf in Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera the rest of the summer.

For all of Nazli’s life, she wanted to see the world. Growing up in the port city of Bodrum, her father selling handmade items at a stall in one of the local markets, she grew up meeting travelers and tourists from all around the world. Typically after school and on the weekends, she would be right by her baba’s side to sell traditional Turkish blankets and Evil Eye trinkets. The duo practicing their English with each and every single foreign seller that stopped by their little shop. For the longest time, it was just Nazli and her father, her mother having died when she was very little. She didn’t grow up knowing what it was like to have a mother---at least, not until she was seventeen years old.

Nothing had prepared the young girl at first when her father started to date. After her mother, he never showed any interest in anyone. For the longest time, he seemed happy and even content with just the two of them. So learning that he had a girlfriend of one year and that it was extremely serious... Well, suffice to say, she was incredibly shocked. How on earth has he been in a serious relationship all this time and not even tell her? To add on to it, they were even engaged. Learning about her new stepmom-to-be, Nazli applied to a school out in New York in the United States. The news hadn’t been taken well, clearly, and her application had been an impulsive move as some small act of rebellion. She felt completely blindsided by her father and his “rash” decision; How could she trust him after this? Yet as months went by and she finally got to meet the fiancée, she found herself starting to like the woman. Not too long before the wedding, however, she found out she was accepted at the culinary school in New York and even received a few scholarships.

Despite her father’s initial reaction, disappointed that she hadn’t told him about her application (something she admittedly forgotten to tell him about, especially once things became good again), he and his new wife were supportive in her schooling. Soon enough, she moved out to the States. Ready to finally see the world... That is, until she met Bashir Quershi.

The two weren’t super close or anything. They’d been friendly acquaintances in her eyes and she enjoyed his band’s music, having gone to some of their shows despite not attending the same school as them. Yet eventually, one thing led to another and they had slept together one night. Nothing ever progressed after that and they hadn’t even mentioned anything concerning it. At least, they hadn’t... Until she discovered she was pregnant. At first, she hadn’t been sure who the father even could have been. She slept around with a couple of different people that there hadn’t been a concrete answer for a moment. Yet after awhile, she realized who the father was. And for a moment, she debated telling Bash in the first place. Eventually, the guilt was getting the best of her and after spotting him while out in the city, she couldn’t keep it from him anymore: he was going to be a father. Him, a ‘man’ who was still a kid. The same way she was a ‘woman’ who was still just a kid as well.

For a moment, she thought he wouldn’t want anything to do with the child. Nazli had already decided to give the baby up for adoption, knowing that the baby deserved better than her. She wasn’t ready to be a mother. She couldn’t be one... How the fuck could she be a mother when she never had one growing up? Bashir deciding to step up and raising their son himself had been a rather shocking moment for her. After all, she thought he would agree with her. He had his own life and was going to school. Having a baby would change that. For a moment, she almost stayed. Then she got closer to the due date and applied for a program with Semester at Sea, getting accepted into the study-abroad program and also transferring to a new culinary school out west in Seattle. Not too long after her son, Bodhi Quershi, was born, she was gone. A decision she’s regretted over the past couple of years.

Over the years, she’d been able to travel and see the world more. She formed a good group of friends while in culinary school and eventually, they started their own business. Inspired by their heritages and recipes from their cultures and around the general regions, they started a fusion food truck. At first, business was slow. They had a hard time getting customers and for awhile there, Nazli and her friends started to believe that maybe they should close their truck down. Until finally, business began to pick up. A few months later, they were booming and eventually, they moved from the truck to an actual building. When learning about the business, her stepmother offered to be an investor for the Silk Road. As it turns out, Tripti Ertuğul is originally a part of the Chopra family, a large family from India who are extremely rich. While a majority of their wealth came from their successful international chain of hotels, members of the family also other businesses that they obtained. One of the more favourites of said-businesses was their wildlife sanctuary out in the Bengal region of eastern India. Eventually, the Silk Road had a few more restaurants located within or as a part of Jade Palace locations across the globe.

Over the past few years, there’d been talk of a Jade Palace location being brought to the small city of Providence Peak in Colorado, what with Nazli’s younger cousin Avery Chopra taking over the place. At first, there had been a strange feeling inside Nazli. A sense of guilty and longing upon hearing that name. While the Jade Palace was being built, Nazli and her friends-slash-partners decided that they wanted a location for the Silk Road Restaurant to be built in the city as well---only, as its own entity. With enough convincing, they finally got their wish and the Silk Road was opened for business over Valentine’s Day weekend.

Nazli has only been living in Providence Peak since December, but there’s something about the town that unsettles there. She feels as if she needs to look over her shoulder and is expecting to see a certain someone there. Which is strange, since she doesn’t even know who that certain someone could be. What she doesn’t realize or remember is that Bashir Quershi lives in Providence Peak and raised Bodhi there. While there has always been an open invitation for her to be a part of their lives, the woman has never taken it. Far too scared of the risks and possibilities it would mean if that ever happened.

while the grandest parties are synonymous all year round with fevzi demir, there’s something about ringing in july with a good old fashioned yacht party. but it isn’t just any old yacht party— look at who is throwing it. luckily for our residents and tourists of bodrum, it’s not invite-only. anybody and everybody can come along to witness and partake in a night full of enjoyment courtesy of the greatest host in town. but there’s one catch; while you know you’ll be having a damn great time, there’s always somebody watching.

the decor, while tastefully done, wouldn’t be out of place at a wedding. right from the 20 foot stretch of elegant lighting the way to the yacht, coupled with a grand, floral archway to greet the guests. there’s glittering white everywhere—accented with teal and cerise, of-course. ice sculptures. all done up by an event management team flown in from istanbul. the party has a start time of 7pm, with fireworks at 10 (because why not?) and an end time that doesn’t arrive until early next morning. and yes, there’s an open bar.

p.s. don’t forget to bring your bathing suit / shorts along !!

she’s sunflowers    &    dandelion wishes     /     kind eyes     &     bright smiles .    at first glance demure ,   but you’ll quickly learn she’s an adventurer at heart     &     just as mischievous   ---   either way ,   she’s always effortlessly herself .

born    &    raised in the united kingdom ,   where she spent most of her childhood .    unfortunately ,   she had a weak - constitution ,   plagued by frequent sickness    &    bed rest .

always musically inclined ,   from clanging forks on dinner plates as a toddler to pressing the black   &   white keys of a dusty ,   lace draped piano in the living room .    her first introduction to music was piano lessons ,    but the cello was her true calling .

willow became a common name in the world of classical music     ----     she was born to play the cello .   her childhood is filled with flights to different cello concours ,   lessons from renowned instructors ,   and performances with world - wide orchestras .   the cello is her life   &   she wouldn’t have it any other way .

that’s how she met her husband ,   henry martin .   he had no interest in classical music   &   it was clear   ----    his snoring interrupted her performance    (    everyone had a laugh that night   ) .    they got married a year after this first encounter .

henry was a finance guy that dabbled in stock markets    &    real estate    ----    ‘   a risky business many would say ,   but not for me .   ’    his favorite line at gatherings ,   but she knew better .    they were legally married with no wedding    (    his excuse  :   oh ,   willow  wanted a small ,   family - only wedding   ----    i know  but gotta do what the wife wants ,   happy wife happy life right  ?   ) .    their savings were the highest of highs ,    or the lowest of lows .    it was clear he relied on luck .

they argued a lot .    she felt he was reckless with their money    &    he thought she loved the cello more than him .    after eight years together he suggested divorce .

his death came suddenly ,    almost immediately after his big break .    the police deemed it an accident ,    but her social    &    family circle think she’s responsible    ----    why wouldn’t they  ?    they loved to gossip     &     this was the perfect situation :   a couple on the brink of divorce    &    millions of dollars of inheritance on the line .

since then ,   she could no longer pick up her bow .    her wrist is weak     &     the bow trembles in her grip .    she lost her place in the music industry    ----    a bygone .   after losing her husband     &     her music ,    nothing kept her in the UK anymore .    hence why she’s in bodrum now .
