A sporting account… on Tumblr?
Bit of an experiment, this. Hopefully not a mistake.
Hello. I’m Rafael. I play boccia, which is a Paralympic sport (e.g., a sport which is in the Paralympics, like goalball, wheelchair rugby, etc). It’s a cousin of pétanque, lawn bowls, curling, and all those other sports whose ancient ancestor is someone going “I bet I can get my rock closer to that pebble over there than you can get yours”. Boccia is played indoors, in a space almost exactly the same size as a badminton court, as individuals, in pairs, or teams of 3. In the UK the overwhelming emphasis is on individual play, although pairs and teams competition is growing in global significance.
I’m a member of the newly reformed England squad, run by our governing body Boccia England, and I’m classified as a BC3 athlete - that means that instead of throwing or kicking the balls, we roll them down a ramp instead. The ramp is positioned, and balls set up on it for us, by a Ramp Operator - for me, that’s either one of my personal assistants, or increasingly, my partner. The RO isn’t allowed to see what’s going on on the court, they have to keep their back to it at all times during matchplay - they’re only allowed to physically help, not tactically help.
Playing boccia changed my life - I’ve always been a competitive person but until I discovered the sport in 2012, aged 27, had not only no access to participate in sports but no idea that a sport I could meaningfully play even existed. My sporting career is a direct legacy of the 2012 London Paralympics; it was the presentation of the Boccia UK Squad at the opening ceremony which resulted in the penny dropping. I was at my first club session within a few weeks, and attended my first competition a few weeks after that - I won a bronze medal, and was hooked.
My breakout year was the 2018-2019 season; our last complete season before the pandemic brought everything to a screeching halt. That year I zoomed my way through the Heathcoat Cup national finals - our ‘second division’ competition, a precious space for beginner and improving players to learn their trade without getting steamrollered by the pros - which qualified me directly into the BE Cup Finals, which is the de facto England national championship. I won my pool, unbeaten, and ultimately came 4th, which saw me begin the 2019-2020 season ranked 5th in England, behind two international athletes and two England players.
After that came a funny couple of years; half a season and two bronze medals in BE Cup Qualifiers before the pandemic stopped everything, and then a heavily modified “Back to Boccia” season for 2021-2022, at which I won the gold medal at two of the three Back To Boccia Cup events, went and won the qualifying tournament for the German National Boccia Championships in Düsseldorf - broadening my horizons as a dual national - before being selected for my very first Boccia UK Challenger. The Challengers are events run by BUK to provide the UK national squad, and selected others from the home countries, with additional formal competition experience. At the Gloucester Challenger there were 4 Boccia UK-supported athletes; two men from the World Class Programme and two women being supported in their development with coaching and world-class equipment, including Paralympian Scott McCowan, who had come 4th in Tokyo just nine months earlier. I beat all four UK athletes, and ultimately came second to my England colleague Matt Berry. That silver medal is my greatest achievement, to date. Matt and I followed that up with another one-two finish at the special, pandemic-edition competition run within the talent pathway as a substitute for the England national championships, which resulted in my being selected for my very first UK National Championships, where I lost only to the two McCowan brothers, Paralympians both, and ultimately came 6th. Just a fortnight later I was in Berlin, where I won the silver medal in the German National Championships.
I’ve just kicked off the 2022-2023 season with a very solid 5th place at the first BE Cup qualifier competition, and I’m off up to the SMILE Boccia Open tomorrow, to train up a shiny new personal assistant as a ramp operator. Wish us luck!

The Paralympic Games
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Paralympic Games The Paralympic Games, an article that illustrates how this great sporting manifestation was born, with some famous athletes stories and their achievements. If you want to know more about the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games visit its website. Follow the worlds top athletes as they go for gold in France (Jul 26-Aug 11, 2024). Paralympic Games – Wednesday 28 August to Sunday 8 September. It never gets tiring coming to Paralympic Games and crossing the line first. It is like a fairytale that just doesn't seem to end, each time I come out. Jason Smyth My dream was to win the World Championships and I did it. So I said my next dream was to win the Paralympics. So what's my next dream? It is sleeping. Daniel Martins We are all humans, we spend almost all our career together so when a teammate suffers, I suffer too. Omara Durand The Olympic Games began in Greece about three thousand years ago. Only men could be Olympic athletes, and they wore nothing when they ran in Olympic races. All wars stopped for the Olympics in those days. The discus and the pentathlon began in these early Olympic Games. The marathon began when Greece was at war, and a soldier ran about forty-two kilometres from a town called Marathon to Athens to tell the people there about the Greeks winning the war. The soldier died soon after he arrived in Athens. In 394 the Romans stopped the Greek Olympic Games, because they didn't like them.
Tumblr media
Paralympic Athletes In 1896, a Frenchman, Pierre de Coubertin, began the Olympic Games again. These days the Olympic Games usually happen every four years. They did not happen in 1916, 1940, or 1944 because there were wars in these years. Paralympic Games, athletic competition for people with disabilities, including amputees, people with impaired vision, paraplegics, and people with cerebral palsy. Fanie Lombaard, of course, is one of these disabled sportsmen. But how did the Paralympics begin? In the 1940s Sir Ludwig Guttmann was a doctor at the Stoke Mandeville hospital in England. At the hospital there were many disabled soldiers from World War II and Guttmann wanted these soldiers to get better by doing sports. In July 1948, when the Olympic Games happened in London, Guttmann asked disabled soldiers to go to a sports meeting together at Stoke Mandeville. It was all very successful, so he did it again four years later in 1952. This time disabled soldiers from Holland came too. Because he worked a lot with disabled athletes in the 1940s and 1950s, people often call Sir Ludwig Guttmann "the father of the Paralympics". The Paralympics are younger than the Olympics, but they are getting bigger all the time. The first true Paralympic Games happened in Rome, a week after the 1960 Summer Olympic Games, in this occasion four hundred disabled athletes from twenty-three different countries competed in eight sports. At the Sydney Paralympics in 2000, there were 4,000 disabled athletes from 122 countries! The Paralympic games were initially open only to athletes in wheelchairs. All that changed in 1976 when athletes with different disabilities took part in the games. Of the 23 sports at the Paralympic Games, only 4 are not included in the Olympic Games. These are Goal Ball, a team sport played by visually-impaired athletes who throw or roll a ball with a bell inside it, Boccia, a sport similar to lawn bowls played in teams of pairs, Wheelchair Rugby, and Powerlifting, similar to weightlifting, but using the upper body only.
Tumblr media
Paralympic British Athletes Track events at the Summer Paralympics include the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, 1,500-meter, 5,000-meter, and 10,000-meter races. The 4 × 100 and 4 × 400 relays are also held. The field events are discus, javelin, shot put, high jump, and long jump. Other sports include archery, basketball, boccie (lawn bowls), bowling, cycling, equestrian events, fencing, goalball, judo, sailing, soccer, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, and wheelchair rugby. Events at the Winter Paralympics include Alpine and Nordic skiing, ice-sledge hockey, ice-sledge racing, and biathlon. Modern technology has radically improved the range of possible activities for physically disabled people. As a result, the intensity of the competition at the Paralympics has increased. This in turn has increased publicity and financial support of the games. To compete in the Paralympic Games each athlete must meet rigorous qualifying standards that are categorized according to disability type and severity, and then be selected to his or her country's team. The Paralympics are recognized and supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). These days there are Paralympic Games every four years, and because it's easier for Paralympic athletes to stay in Olympic hotels and to run in Olympic stadiums, the Paralympics usually happen in the Olympic cities, too. Think of playing basket-ball in a wheelchair. Think of skiing with only one leg. Think of running when you can't see in front of you. Disabled people can do some wonderful things! Here are the stories of some disabled athletes. The first athlete with a disability to compete in the able-bodied Games was the German American gymnast George Eyser. He competed in 1904 with one artificial leg and won six medals in one day. In 2008, South African distance swimmer Natalie Du Toit was the second person to compete in both Games. Bob Matthews is blind. He was born in England on May 26, 1961. Usually he works in an office, but he's a very good runner in his free time In the Paralympic Games in Sydney 2000, he won two medals. He won a gold medal in the 10,000 metres and he came second in the 5,000 metres. In a race, blind athletes need a guide who can see and help them run. In the 10.000 metres, runners have two guides. The guides must be very fast and very strong. They run together with the blind athletes and are their "speaking eyes". They tell them when there is someone in front of them or when they can run faster.
Tumblr media
Bob Matthews Bob is good at making people laugh. At the Sydney Olympics he said, "I want to 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres, but I'm running in the marathon only because I want to see all of Sydney cheaply!" He says he has the healthiest guide dog in Britain. His nine-year-old dog Quando always goes running with him when he's training for a race. Jean Driscoll was born in Wisconsin on November 18, 1966. Because there was something wrong with her back when she was born, she can't walk and she has a wheelchair to move about in. But she can make that wheelchair go very fast! Jean began playing wheelchair basketball when she was a young woman. Then she went to the University of Illinois, and there she became interested in wheelchair racing. She won the Boston Marathon for wheelchair athletes eight times and she is the only athlete, able-bodied or disabled, to do that. From 1988 to 2000 she won five gold medals in the Paralympic Games; and she came second in the 800-metres wheelchair race in the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996. Like Fanie Lombaard, Jean wants people to call her an athlete and not a disabled athlete. She wants people to speak well of disabled athletes for being good at their sport and not only for being disabled sportsmen and sportswomen. Jean wants more disabled people to do great things too. She gives talks on television and in 2000 she wrote a book about her story. "Dream big, and work hard," she says to everyone. She now lives in Champaign, Illinois, and there is a street in Champaign called "Jean Driscoll Lane". Diana Golden was born in New England in the USA. She began skiing when she was a little girl and she dreamt of being a famous skier one day. Then, at the age of twelve, her right leg suddenly broke one winter day after an afternoon's skiing. In hospital the doctor looked at it carefully and then told her, "We're afraid you have cancer in your leg. so were going to take it off." A few days later, in hospital, Diana called her doctor. "Can I ski with one leg?" she asked him. "Of course, you can!" he said. Two months later, Diana was skiing again. Things weren't easy for her. She was only a child after all. But she trained every day and she became very good at her sport. She won ten world championships and an Olympic gold medal for her skiing. But the most important day of her life was in 1987. She didn't win the race that day: she came in at number ten. But it was a world championship race and she was the only disabled person competing with able-bodied skiers. Diana said, "When I was at school children laughed at me because I had only one leg. But now I'm faster than some athletes with two legs!" Sadly, Diana Golden could not win her fight with cancer, and she died on August 25, 2001 at the age of thirty-eight.
Tumblr media
Jackie Joyner Kersee American track-and-field athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee was the first woman to win consecutive heptathlons at the Olympic Games and the first to amass more than 7000 points in the competition. In addition to her gold medals at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992, she also won a silver medal in the heptathlon at the 1984 Olympics. Over a two-day period, heptathletes score points in each of the competition's seven events: 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin, and 800-meter race. The heptathlete with the most overall points wins the competition. These sportsmen are only some of the true heroes of sport from different times and from different countries in the world. There are many more. Who is your favourite sports hero of yesterday or today? Where do they come from and why do you like them? And who are going to be the sports heroes of tomorrow? Perhaps they can teach us something important too. Lancashire County Cricket Club
Lancashire County Cricket Club represents the historical county of Lancashire in English cricket. The club has been granted First-Class status since its establishment in 1864. Lancashire's home ground is Old Trafford Cricket Ground The team does also plays at other venues around the county. Lancashire was a founder member of the County Championship in 1890. The team has been successful in winning the event nine times lastly in the year 2011. Lancashire's limited overs team is known as Lancashire Lightning.
Lancashire was widely acknowledged to be The the Champion County for four times between 1879-1889. They first won two County Championship titles in the 1897 and 1904 seasons. Between 1926 to 1934, they took home the championship five times. In the majority of the interwar the period Lancashire along with their neighbor Yorkshire had the two best team within England and the Roses Matches between them were typically an event that was the highlight of the home season. in 1950, Lancashire took the same title alongside Surrey. It was the County Championship was restructured in 2000 with Lancashire in First Division. They were the winners of the 2011, the County Championship, a interval of 77 years from the last title that the club won outright in 1934.
The year was 1895. Archie MacLaren scored 424 in an innings for Lancashire which remains the top score of an Englishman in the first-class of cricket. Johnny Briggs, who's career ran between 1879 and 1900, became the first person to record 10,000 runs and to take 1,000 wickets for Lancashire. Ernest Tyldesley, younger brother of Johnny Tyldesley is the team's top run-scorer, scoring 34,222 run in 573 matches of Lancashire from 1909 to. Quick bowler Brian Statham took 1 816 wickets for the club in 430 first-class matches between 1950 and 1968. England player Cyril Washbrook became Lancashire's first professional captain in the year 1954.
The Lancashire side from the late 1960s and early 1970sled by Jack Bond and featuring the West Indian batsman Clive Lloyd, was successful in limited-overs cricket, winning the Sunday League in 1969 and 1970 as well as winning the Gillette Cup four times between 1970 between 1970 and 1975. Lancashire had won the Benson and Hedges Cup in 1984, and three times between 1991 and 1996 and the Sunday League in 1989, 1998 and 1999. They won the Twenty20 Cup for the first time in the year 2015.
The first cricket to be played in Lancashire
Cricket may not have reached Lancashire before in the late 18th century. As advised by the Association of Cricket Statisticians (ACS) The earliest information about the sport being played in the county has been found on the Manchester Journal dated Saturday, 1 September 1781. It concerned an eleven-a-side match which was played on the Monday preceding, 27 August at Brinnington Moor. It was a match between a group of printers and one representing two villages, Haughton and Bredbury and Bredbury, who were winners. Since Bredbury was at the time part of Cheshire it is the earliest reference for that county too.
Let's have a look at famous sports around the world-

Bowling
In 1816 in 1816, in 1816, the Manchester Cricket Club was founded and was soon the principal north country rivals for Nottingham Cricket Club and Sheffield Cricket Club. On 23-25 July 1849, teams from the Sheffield as well as Manchester clubs met at Hyde Park in Sheffield but the match was referred to as Yorkshire against Lancashire. It was the first game to feature a team that used Lancashire as its name . It is believed to have become the first Roses Match. Yorkshire beat Lancashire by five wickets. Teams referred to as Yorkshire even though they were based on the Sheffield club, had been in existence since 1833. The Roses Match is one of the oldest and most renowned cricket rivalries. In 1857, the Manchester club relocated to Old Trafford, which has been the home of Lancashire cricket ever since.
The history of the county clubs
On Tuesday, 12 January 1864 Manchester Cricket Club set up an assembly at the Queen's Hotel in Manchester for the purpose of forming an organization for the representation of the county. It was comprised of thirteen local clubs: Broughton, Longsight, Manchester and Western from the Manchester region; Huyton, Liverpool and Northern from Merseyside; Accrington, Ashton, Blackburn, Oldham, Whalley and Wigan from towns outside of the region. Lancashire County Cricket Club formed in the year formed with the intention of, it was said, "spreading a thorough knowledge and appreciation of the game throughout Lancashire". The club was envisioned to play home matches in alternating locations at Old Trafford, Aigburth, Preston, Blackburn and at "other places to help introduce good cricket throughout the county".
The new county club played its first-ever official game at Warrington against Birkenhead Park in the afternoon of Wednesday 15 June 1864. However, it was not a First-Class match. The first inter-county game first-class came to play in 1865 Old Trafford against Middlesex; Lancashire took the victory with a score of 62, though Middlesex's V. E. Walker was the sole wicket taker in Lancashire's second innings.
Early successes
The first Lancashire team was heavily dependent upon amateurs. This led to problems. Even though they were satisfied to play in the prestigious Old Trafford, they were more reluctant to travel to away games. During the early 1870s, the team was dominated by A. N. Hornby's batting. The team's level of cricket was improved after the arrival with two players who were professional Dick Barlow and Alex Watson. The impact of Barlow and Hornby was such that their partnership in batting was immortalized in the poem Lord's of Francis Thompson. Their team further enriched in the 1880s by A. G. Steel who was a naive player, often regarded third only behind W. G. Grace as the country's most effective all rounder; Johnny Briggs, a professional from Sutton-in-Ashfield and the only player to reach 10,000 runs and take 1000 wickets for Lancashire; the wicket-keeper Dick Pilling, who in 1891 was recognized by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack as the second-best wicket-keeper of all time, behind Jack Blackham. As Lancashire's reliability improved, also did their support. in 1878, 28,000 spectators over for three consecutive days went to watch Lancashire compete against Gloucestershire.
The first major win of the club's history came in 1879, when the majority of the cricket media (with the exception of Wisden were of the opinion that Lancashire together with Nottinghamshire had been joint champions. Lancashire was the champion county in 1881 and again shared victory with Nottinghamshire at the time of 1882.
Dick Barlow carried his bat for only 5 not out in Lancashire's total of 69 in two and a quarter hours against Nottinghamshire on the treacherous, wet Trent Bridge pitch in July 1882. Barlow as well as his long-time opening teammate Hornby are the opening batsmen immortalised in the famed poem written by Francis Thompson. in 1884 Old Trafford became the second venue, following The Oval, to stage the Test match between Australia and England. Though it rained on the first day, a record crowd of 12,000 took part on the second; the game of England and Australia ended in an unfinished draw.
Controversy emerged during the 1880s; Kent and Nottinghamshire objected to the bowling practices of John Crossland and George Nash. Nottinghamshire even did so much as refusing to play Lancashire. While the 1880s were turbulent and resulted in small results for the club however, it was also the period when certain club records were set. In 1885 George Kemp (later 1st Baron Rochdale) recorded Lancashire's first century in the Roses Match. The same year, Johnny Briggs and Dick Pilling made a record in the first class with the wicket tenth in 173. This record remained in place until 1899. The record has never been overtaken by Lancashire. The club also shared its title as champions Surrey in 1889.

CAPHRA boccia il rapporto dell'OMS
Tumblr media
