The Vital Safety Items to Have in Your Boats

Sometimes, accidents and unfortunate incidents happen even when you’re careful. Man overboard, intoxication, injuries, extreme weather conditions, allergy reactions, and sudden illness can occur whenever you’re out in on your boat.  And these events happen when you least expect them. So, it’s important to be always ready whenever they occur. The best way to prepare yourself is to these events is to equip your boat with the necessary safety equipment and boating accessories you will need to assist you while waiting for help to come. Having these items in your boat can literally save your life.

First aid essentials to have in your boat:

Waterproof container: To store all your first aid items and medication. Make sure they are sturdy enough and wide enough to store everything.

Scissors: For cutting bandages, tapes, and clothing from a wound.

Safety pins: To hold bandages or slings in place.

Tweezers: To remove splinters or minuscule foreign bodies embedded in the wound.  

Syringe: To fill with saline to wash a wound or use as emergency eye drops. Make sure the needle is removed.

Saline solution or hydrogen peroxide: To clean wounds before applying the bandage.

Bandages: To cover injuries. Triangular bandage to support an injured arm or shoulders. Adhesive pads and gauze to cover cuts.

Cold packs: To give relief to burns, sprains, and swelling.

Blanket: To retain body heat. You can use a space blanket to effectively prevent hypothermia.

Surgical gloves: To wear when in contact with bodily fluids

Burn cream: To treat burns or sunburns.

Other Essential Tools and Equipment for Emergencies

All boats, whatever shape or size, must always contain life jackets and personal floatation devices that are enough for the number of passengers in the boat.

Make sure your horn works properly. It’s best to supply an additional horn or whistle.

Fire extinguishers should be stored in case of fires.

VHF radio and emergency location devices should always be present in your boat. Don’t rely on your smartphones solely since cellular signals can be choppy and unreliable when you’re out in the ocean. VHF radios are equipped with a service in which you can make a call to anyone within your range. It is also equipped with GPS so the person receiving your call can pinpoint your location. Most modern VHF radios are equipped with updated marine weather reports and alerts in the event of sudden extreme weather.

Include visual distress signals in your must-haves. You can use a smoke flare, emergency flags, or electronic SOS signal lights. Store these SOS signals in waterproof containers.

Visual distress signals are another must-have item, particularly if you’re venturing far from shore. Vessels to 65 feet require a minimum of three day-use and three night-use pyrotechnic devices (flares). An orange flag can be substituted for one day-use device; an electronic SOS signal light can be substituted for one night-use. Like your first aid items, store flares in a waterproof container. You can buy all the items listed above in your local marine shops or through online stores.

Last, but definitely not least is to provide a float plan. A float plan is where you list down your boat trip details: the destination you’re heading to, how long will your trip last, information about the passengers on board, the safety equipment you have stored in your boat, and a description of your boat. Provide a copy to a friend or the local marina to inform them about your trip. Instruct them on what to do if you ever don’t return right away from your trip.

Happy Fakie Friday! Today I'd like to talk about my personal definition of what makes a toy a "fakie", as I've had people bridle (hee hee) at some of my Fakie Friday picks in the past.

First, let's talk about what doesn't define a fakie.

A fakie doesn't have to be a bootleg (though they can be).

A fakie doesn't have to be made by an unknown, fly-by-night company. Remco was founded in 1949, Buddy L's toy division was founded in 1921.

A fakie doesn't have to have incomprehensible or poorly designed packaging.

A fakie doesn't have to be a poor quality or poorly thought out toy.

Okay, so what IS a fakie?

Fakies aren't about non-Hasbro horse toys being "bad" and Hasbro horse toys being "good"; it's about how impactful the My Little Pony brand is. Even in the years where the toyline was completely dormant, your average joe would look at a rainbow horse with a heart on its bum and think "My Little Pony."

^ This horse in Hercules isn't proportioned like a MLP at all but in the Year of Our Lord 1997 everyone was talking about "the scene where Pegasus was almost seduced by a My Little Pony." (Though the pink horse was actually the bad guys in disguise.)

I love fakies! But no matter how innovative and high quality are, they cannot escape being compared to the platonic ideal: a Real My Little Pony.

So here is my ultimate test of whether a toy horse is a fakie:

Throw away its packaging. Lose all its accessories. Toss it in a baggie with random small toys and hang it on a hook in Savers, Value Village, or Goodwill.

If your elderly relative who knows nothing about toys points out the baggie and says to you, the collector: "Oh, here's one with a My Little Pony in it", then it's a fakie. ;)

A man with a sword is riding a dragon by holding the rein. The dragon's body was given the shape of a boat. A little egret is standing at the tail of the dragon. A carp under the dragon is leading the way. The umbrella in the top middle of the picture shows the owner's nobility. About Qu Yuan(屈原）

Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC – 278 BC)was a Chinese poet and aristocrat in the State of Chu during the Warring States period. He is known for his patriotism and contributions to classical poetry and verses, especially through the poems of the Chu Ci anthology (also known as The Songs of the South or Songs of Chu): a volume of poems attributed to or considered to be inspired by his verse writing. Together with the Shi Jing, the Chu Ci is one of the two greatest collections of ancient Chinese verse. He is also remembered in connection to the supposed origin of the Dragon Boat Festival.

Historical details about Qu Yuan's life are few, and his authorship of many Chu Ci poems has been questioned at length.[4] However, he is widely accepted to have written "The Lament," a Chu Ci poem. The first known reference to Qu Yuan appears in a poem written in 174 BC by Jia Yi, an official from Luoyang who was slandered by jealous officials and banished to Changsha by Emperor Wen of Han. While traveling, he wrote a poem describing the similar fate of a previous "Qu Yuan."Eighty years later, the first known biography of Qu Yuan's life appeared in Han dynasty historian Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, though it contains a number of contradictory details.

Life of Qu Yuan(屈原）

The only surviving source of information on Qu Yuan's life is Sima Qian's biography of him in Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), although the biography is circumstantial and probably influenced greatly by Sima's own identification with Qu.Sima wrote that Qu was a member of the Chu royal clan and served as an official under King Huai of Chu (reigned 328–299 BC).

During the early days of King Huai's reign, Qu Yuan was serving the State of Chu as its Left Minister. However, King Huai exiled Qu Yuan to the region north of the Han River, because corrupt ministers slandered him and influenced the king.Eventually, Qu Yuan was reinstated and sent on a diplomatic mission to the State of Qi. He tried to resume relations between Chu and Qi, which King Huai had broken under the false pretense of King Hui of Qin to cede territory near Shangyu.

During King Qingxiang's reign, Prime Minister Zilan slandered Qu Yuan.[9] This caused Qu Yuan's exile to the regions south of the Yangtze River. It is said that Qu Yuan returned first to his home town. In his exile, he spent much of this time collecting legends and rearranging folk odes while traveling the countryside. Furthermore, he wrote some of the greatest poetry in Chinese literature and expressed deep concerns about his state. According to legend, his anxiety brought him to an increasingly troubled state of health. During his depression, he would often take walks near a certain well to look upon his thin and gaunt reflection in the water. This well became known as the "Face Reflection Well." On a hillside in Xiangluping (at present-day Zigui County, Hubei Province), there is a well that is considered to be the original well from the time of Qu Yuan.

In 278 BC, learning of the capture of his country's capital, Ying, by General Bai Qi of the state of Qin, Qu Yuan is said to have collected folktales and written the lengthy poem of lamentation called "Lament for Ying". Eventually, he committed suicide by wading into the Miluo River in today's Hunan Province while holding a rock. The reason why he took his life remained controversial and was argued by Chinese scholars for centuries. Typical explanations including martyrdom for his deeply beloved but falling motherland, which was suggested by the philosopher Zhu Xi of the Song dynasty, or feeling extreme despair to the situation of the politics in Chu while his lifelong political dream would never be realized. But according to "Yu Fu," widely considered to be written by Qu himself or at least, a person who was very familiar with Qu, his suicide was an ultimate way to protect his innocence and life principles.[citation needed]

Qu Yuan is said to have expressed his love for the ruling monarch, King Huai of Chu, through several of this works, including "The Lament" and "Longing for Beauty".

Dragon Boat Festival/端午节

Popular legend has it that villagers carried their dumplings and boats to the middle of the river and desperately tried to save Qu Yuan after he immersed himself in the Miluo but were too late to do so. However, in order to keep fish and evil spirits away from his body, they beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles, and they also threw rice into the water both as a food offering to Qu Yuan's spirit and also to distract the fish away from his body. However, the legend continues, that late one night, the spirit of Qu Yuan appeared before his friends and told them that he died because he had taken himself under the river. Then, he asked his friends to wrap their rice into three-cornered silk packages to ward off the dragon.

These packages became a traditional food known as zongzi, although the lumps of rice are now wrapped in leaves instead of silk. The act of racing to search for his body in boats gradually became the cultural tradition of dragon boat racing, held on the anniversary of his death every year. Today, people still eat zongzi and participate in dragon boat races to commemorate Qu Yuan's sacrifice on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar.
