Gale shrank against the wall he was sat against, knees pulled to his chin and hands pressed to the cool tile floor as the old man gripped the phone like he wanted to rip it out of the wall.
“I found another one of them vets in my east woods,” he growled into it. “The Millards found another two in their barn last night, now did I tell the town they can’t be shootin’ all them gotdamn fireworks with all them boys just getting off the boat? Don’t care if we won the war and it’s July fourth. We owe it to the poor bastards, don’t we?”
He slammed the phone in the cradle and Gale flinched, but the woman blocked his view as she bent down in front of him, shifting the baby to her other hip to hand him a glass of water.
“Where’s your people?” she asked. “Who can we call?”
Gale clutched the glass with both hands, gulping it all without breathing and had to suck in a lungful of air when it was gone, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand and shaking his head without looking at her.
He had no people. Dad was dead, his mother hadn’t been around since he was a teenager, not that he would want to see either of them. He couldn’t bother Marge and her family like this, even if they weren’t so far away, and Bucky was—
He slammed the door on that thought, handing her the glass with what he hoped was a grateful-enough nod. The old man returned and crouched down in front of Gale, looking him over carefully and pulling his shirt neck aside to inspect the scrapes and bruises.
“Where you from?” he asked. His eyes were kind but Gale still trembled hard enough to make his teeth chatter. He blinked, then swallowed, tongue feeling thick his mouth, and when he tried to speak his voice cracked and crumbled in his throat. The man’s hand shifted to his shoulder.
“They discharged me in Florida.” Gale finally managed, voice hardly a whisper.
“When?”
Gale licked his lips. It had been…a while? He had the papers in his army-issued bag with all his belongings, but that wasn’t here. Where had he left it?
“Motel,” he mumbled.
“Diane, start calling the motels around here, ask if any rooms been given to–” He lifted Gale’s dog tags, which were hanging outside his shirt. “–Gale Cleven, major. Damn. What outfit were you with?”
An invisible hand closed around Gale’s throat and he clenched his jaw, fighting to inhale through his nose as spots appeared in his vision.
“Hundredth…bomb group,” he wheezed through his teeth, and the man whistled lowly.
“Pilot?”
Gale nodded.
“Lord, he’s white as a sheet,” said the woman.
“All these questions ain’t helping I’m sure,” the man muttered, rubbing Gale’s arms with gentle, calloused hands. “Alright last one, do you know where you were last night?”
Gale squeezed his eyes shut, flashes of light and gunfire and screams piercing hot through his bones.
“Cannons,” he rasped, and the woman hummed.
“They were shooting cannons in Millstown for the parade,” the woman said, bouncing the baby who had begun to fuss. “I heard Billie talking about how much work it took to get them going, the town was proud.”
The man grunted, then drew a deep breath, rubbing his face. “That’s thirty miles away, you mean to tell me he ran all that in one night? Call the Millstown motels first.”

In eagle nirvana, avian flu is decimating America’s national bird. (Washington Post)
Excerpt from this Washington Post story:
The research boat thumped over the waves on a crisp June morning, spraying William Bowerman as he peered into 136 square miles of lakes and a cerulean sky in Voyageurs National Park.
“This is my favorite day of the year, because I’m here in eagle nirvana,” said Bowerman, a bald-eagle researcher who has been coming to these waters for half of his 63 years.
He spoke nostalgically of recent summers when you could scale a 70-foot white pine, peer over the edge of a massive nest and observe healthy brown eaglets. And from that perch, you could see the next eagle nest a mile away, and beyond it a third.
But as Bowerman and his colleagues monitored the status of the park’s bald eagles on this perfect morning, they were finding no young birds — just empty nests and the occasional adult.
Seventeen years after the Fish and Wildlife Service removed the bald eagle from the endangered species list, signaling the comeback of an iconic species, a new enemy is stalking our national bird. Not lead from duck-hunter bullets, not DDT from insecticides, not PCBs from industrial polluters.
The enemy this time is avian influenza.
In Northern Michigan, where Bowerman, a University of Maryland professor, has spent 40 years continuing a long-running bald-eagle census, the number of occupied eagle nests had risen from 52 in 1961 to 114 in 1984 and about 1,000 by the end of 2021. Late that year, highly pathogenic avian influenza reached North America.
The impact was immediate and devastating. In 2022, the number of occupied nests plunged 50 percent. Tests on dead bald eagles performed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources revealed that 38 percent of those that could be diagnosed had died of avian influenza.
In Minnesota, however, there are no comprehensive figures on the impact of the disease because the state does not collect all dead eagles for necropsy, the animal version of an autopsy.
Nationwide, avian influenza has killed at least 606 bald eagles in 45 states, according to findings from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, part of the Department of Agriculture. And those are just the eagles whose remains have been recovered and tested; experts believe they represent only a small fraction of the true toll.
“The warning bell has been rung,” said Peter Nye, who started organizing New York state’s bald-eagle restoration program in 1975 when the state had just a single pair. When he retired in 2010, the number had risen to an estimated 450.
In Florida and Georgia, avian influenza has caused an alarming rate of bald eagle deaths and nest failures, researchers wrote in January 2023 in the journal Nature Scientific Reports. Nest success rates — the percentage that result in the birth of eaglets that learn to fly — dropped in the two-hardest hit Georgia counties, Camden and Glynn, by 43 percent and 62 percent respectively in 2022.
Eagles were nesting when the virus began to overrun the population.
“Waterfowl were dying, and the eagles were eating the waterfowl,” said Nicole Nemeth, lead author of the paper and head of the research and diagnostic service at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study at the University of Georgia. The study, launched in 1957, receives dead wildlife from 17 states and has helped researchers evaluate the broader impact of avian influenza.
As dead eagles came into the study in 2022, the organizers heard the same basic story again and again.
“‘This was a nesting adult. We found it dead. A day or two later, we found the mate dead, and then the chicks died.’ It was sad, depressing, alarming,” Nemeth said. “It was like you were trying to sleep at night, and you just could not get out of your mind the fact that these birds were dropping dead.”
In a graphic video accompanying the journal study, an eagle infected with avian influenza jerked its head frantically and beat its wings, unable to rise more than a few feet from the ground.
Nemeth and her colleagues concluded that the eagle losses from avian flu offer a broader picture of the disease’s impact, “an early horizon scan of an emerging threat to populations of predatory and scavenging birds across North America.” Hundreds of hawks and owls have already been felled by the disease, according to federal figures.

The Role of Florida Real Estate Agents in Luxury Home Buying
The luxury home market in Florida is one of the most sought-after in the United States, known for its high-end waterfront properties, exclusive gated communities, and modern penthouses. For buyers looking to enter this market, navigating the complexities and nuances of luxury real estate requires expert guidance. This is where the role of a Florida real estate agent becomes invaluable. These agents are not just intermediaries; they are skilled professionals who possess deep knowledge of the local market, property values, and the unique characteristics of high-end homes. In this article, we’ll explore how Florida real estate agents play a crucial role in luxury home buying and what sets them apart in this competitive market.
1. Market Expertise
One of the most critical aspects of buying a luxury home in Florida is understanding the market. Florida’s real estate market is diverse, with properties varying significantly in price, style, and location. From Miami’s iconic oceanfront mansions to Orlando’s upscale golf communities, luxury real estate is as varied as the state itself.
Florida real estate agents specializing in luxury homes possess extensive knowledge about local neighborhoods, market trends, and property values. They can help clients identify which areas offer the best investment opportunities or which locations align with their lifestyle preferences. Whether it’s advising on the appreciation potential of a specific neighborhood or understanding the market’s current supply and demand, these agents provide insights that are vital for making informed decisions.
2. Access to Exclusive Listings
Many luxury properties are not listed on public real estate websites or MLS (Multiple Listing Service). Instead, they are sold through private channels or “pocket listings.” Florida real estate agents who specialize in luxury homes often have exclusive access to these off-market listings. They leverage their network of industry contacts, including other agents, developers, and property owners, to find homes that meet their clients' specific requirements.
For buyers seeking privacy or unique properties that are not widely advertised, having an agent with insider access is essential. These agents can present buyers with opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise know about, giving them a competitive edge in a tight market.
3. Navigating the Buying Process
The process of purchasing a luxury home involves a series of complex steps that are often more intricate than those for standard real estate transactions. Luxury home buyers need to navigate additional legal requirements, intricate inspections, and high-stakes negotiations. Florida real estate agents are experienced in managing these complexities.
From coordinating with attorneys and financial institutions to ensuring that the property meets the buyer’s expectations in terms of quality and value, agents streamline the process. They also handle negotiations with finesse, making sure the buyer’s interests are protected while aiming for a fair and favorable deal. This level of expertise is particularly important in Florida’s luxury market, where prices can range from millions to tens of millions of dollars.
4. Understanding Luxury Property Features
Luxury homes come with a range of unique features and amenities that set them apart from standard residential properties. These can include private docks, golf courses, expansive acreage, high-tech smart home systems, and world-class architectural designs. Florida real estate agents specializing in luxury properties understand these features and can accurately assess their value.
An experienced agent will know which features add long-term value and which are simply for aesthetic appeal. They also understand how to match these features with a client’s lifestyle needs. For example, a client who loves boating may prioritize waterfront access with a private dock, while another might be looking for a home with state-of-the-art security systems and private gym facilities.
5. Managing Client Expectations
Luxury home buyers typically have high expectations regarding the properties they are interested in, but also in terms of service. Florida real estate agents catering to the luxury market are accustomed to working with high-net-worth individuals, understanding the level of discretion, professionalism, and responsiveness required.
Agents ensure that clients have a seamless, stress-free experience by managing expectations and providing constant communication throughout the buying process. They often work with a team of professionals—including inspectors, contractors, and designers—to ensure that the home meets the buyer’s standards before finalizing the purchase.
6. Connections with Industry Experts
Luxury real estate transactions involve a network of professionals, including attorneys, mortgage brokers, appraisers, and interior designers. Florida real estate agents often have established relationships with these professionals and can recommend trustworthy experts to assist with the transaction.
For example, luxury home purchases might require specialized financial arrangements, such as jumbo loans, which are larger than conventional mortgages. A Florida real estate agent can connect buyers with lenders who specialize in these types of loans. Additionally, agents can recommend architects and interior designers for renovations or upgrades, ensuring the home aligns with the buyer’s vision.
7. Post-Purchase Support
The relationship between a luxury real estate agent and their client often extends beyond the sale. Many agents offer post-purchase services, assisting buyers with settling into their new home and community. This might include recommending local service providers, helping with home maintenance, or connecting clients with local events and social circles.
This added layer of support can be especially valuable for buyers relocating from other states or countries. Florida real estate agents can help clients navigate the logistics of moving into a luxury home and provide guidance on local resources, making the transition as smooth as possible.
8. Legal and Financial Guidance
Luxury homes often come with additional legal and financial considerations, such as tax implications, zoning restrictions, or homeowners association (HOA) rules. Florida real estate agents who specialize in high-end properties are familiar with these unique challenges and work closely with legal experts to ensure all aspects of the transaction are in compliance with local and state regulations.
In many cases, foreign buyers are attracted to Florida’s luxury market. Navigating U.S. real estate laws can be tricky for international buyers, and real estate agents help bridge this gap by providing clarity on regulations, taxes, and financing options specific to foreign ownership.

Prepare Vessels for Potential Tropical Cyclone 9
Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-208, Emergency Management – Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, declaring a state of emergency in 41 Florida counties ahead of the storm. Weather is expected to strengthen and is anticipated to cover a large area, affecting regions well beyond its center into Florida. There is a considerable risk of storm surge, coastal flooding and erosion, heavy rainfall and flash flooding, as well as damaging winds. Preparation is critical to staying safe and minimizing severe weather impacts. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) gathered the following informational resources to help boaters prepare and recover from intense storms. Prepare Vessels for Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 Move your vessel if you can and protect it if you can’t - If your boat can be trailered, haul it out of the water and move it to a safe location as far from tidal waters as possible. This includes kayaks and other recreational watercraft. - If your vessel must stay in a marina berth, double all lines and rig cross-spring lines fore and aft, and attach lines high on pilings to allow for tidal rise or surge. - If your vessel is at anchor, move to the most protected area possible and set out multiple anchors with at least a 10:1 scope, remove canvas coverings if possible, and remove or secure any sails. - If your vessel is to remain on a mooring, make sure it is designed to withstand the load that your vessel will place on it. Inspect chains and swivels connecting to the mooring buoy and double up on the pendant. - Remember to remove Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacons, life rings, life jackets and loose items from the boat and store them in a safe, indoor location. - Use the Florida Boat Ramp Finder to find a ramp near you. Cover all lines to prevent chafing - Wrap all lines where lines feed through chocks with tape, rags and rubber hoses or leather. Install fenders, fender boards or tires to protect the boat from rubbing against the pier, pilings or other boats. Charge batteries and make sure they can run automatic bilge pumps throughout the storm - Consider adding backup batteries and shut off all other devices that consume electricity. Do not stay onboard and do not venture out into rough conditions - If you’re onboard during a bad storm, you are risking your life and the lives of potential responders. - Learn what Florida law says about mandatory marina evacuations. Chapter 327.59, F.S., Marina Evacuations. After the storm, report issues to the FWC - Check marina eligibility for disaster relief through Small Business Administration loans. SBA Disaster Assistance. - Report missing and/or damaged waterway markers. - Report storm-damaged boats that might be lost or abandoned to your local law enforcement agency (preferred) or the FWC Division of Law Enforcement at 888-404-3922. - Call 911 or use VHF Marine Radio Channel 16 to report distress and other emergencies. Social media should not be used to report life-threatening distress due to limited resources to monitor the dozens of social media platforms during severe storm events.
