Cruising the high seas

Day 1 Sydney

A very early start to the day, like 4am early as we had to drop the car off at 5:30am to get to the airport for our 7am flight to Sydney. A fairly uneventful flight, except for Andy as I surprised him with a bid upgrade to Business class.

After landing, we grabbed our bags & trained to Circular Quay so we could bag drop at our ship, the Ruby Princess. Unfortunately we couldn’t board for 3 hours so we decided to make use of our SA Zoo memberships & get the ferry to Taronga.

Highlights for me were watching some kids learning how to sail, getting towed in little sailing boats, the meerkats getting fed & watching a baby elephant getting washed. That would have to be one of the coolest jobs, it was so cute, everytime it lifted its foot or turned around, it was rewarded with a treat.

After arriving back to Circular Quay, we had a short wait before we could board our home for the next 2 weeks. The afternoon was spent exploring the ship before the safety drill, then dinner. The night’s entertainment was the fabulous Diane Cousins, who I met on the cruise to New Zealand 5 years ago

New Year’s resolutions, do you stick to yours? According to the Sydney Morning Herald, around 50 per cent of Australians make a New Year’s resolution, with an 88 per cent failure rate.

With stats like this it’s pretty easy to give up on them, isn’t it?

But that failure rate probably has something to do with the fact that the goals we set are unrealistic. Are you really going to drink green smoothies every day or run 20km a week? Probably not!

The article makes the suggestion that resolutions should:

Set achievable goals instead of ideal goals.

Expect setbacks.

Don’t use excuses or setbacks to put it off for another year.

Well, I propose another tip. Make your resolutions fun and in line with the things you enjoy doing. Why go to the gym when you could go hiking instead?

Here are my suggestions for some New Year’s resolutions to consider for next year:

1. I will get fit

Getting fit or losing weight is probably the most common New Year’s resolution. And for many, that means taking out an expensive gym membership or signing up with a personal trainer.

But getting fit this year needn’t be arduous or expensive. Dust off your hiking boots and hit your local walking trail. The crunch of the gravelly track under your feet, the tweeting of birds, the smell of eucalyptus in the air. It’s so much more motivating than heading to a windowless room full of exercise equipment. It’s also cheaper too!

And, with long summer days at your avail, there is no excuse to not go for a hike after work.

2. I will spend more time with friends and family

Camping is a great way to spend time with friends and family. At home, there are TVs, gaming consoles, computers, work, and chores that easily distract us and consume out time. In the middle of the Australian bush, where mobile reception is flaky or non-existent, and the closest thing to wireless is the thing you have your AM radio streaming through.

You have more time and space to connect with those you love. Camping is also a great way to rest the body and mind and do a great deal of nothing.

3. I will eat better

Eating better isn’t only about cutting carbs or calories or sugar. It’s about eating real, wholesome food that you have cooked from scratch. And what better place to cook from scratch and eat well than when you’re out camping. Camp cooking isn’t all beans, bacon, and toast.

4. I will travel more

Perhaps that tour of Europe or trip across the USA is a while off, but travel needn’t take you abroad. How much of your own country have you actually explored? Go on. Be honest. Don’t feel bad, I’m in the same boat. I have only explored a tiny portion of my own state let alone the rest of the country.

Travel close, but travel regularly. On weekends rather than sitting in front of the TV, go for a drive. Or a walk. Or a cycle. See things you haven’t seen before. It’ll be fun. Promise. Take plenty of photos too.

5. I will keep my gear organised and clean

So, you’ve been out camping for a week. You get home, offload the gear, and it’s back to the grind. Your gear is stowed away until next time and that’s that.

Bad form, that’s what it is.

To keep your camping gear in tip-top condition, so it lasts a long time, it’s important to properly maintain and store it. Make sure your tent is completely dry before you put it away. And vacuum or sweep it out properly. With your sleeping mats – unroll them and keep them under the bed, and your sleeping bags shouldn’t be kept bundled up in the stuff sack as it will affect the fill.

Instead, take them out of the sack and keep them in a cool, dry place in a large pillow case or in the case of Sea to Summit sleeping bags, their own breathable storage bag.

Also, now that you’ve got a bit of time off over the holiday period, it’s a great time to actually wash your down sleeping bag, patch up that tent that’s been out of action for a while, or re-condition and clean up those beaten up hiking boots.

6. I will replace or upgrade that thing that really needs it

We all have a piece of camping or hiking gear that we should really just retire and replace. For me, it’s an old el’ cheapo 1 person hiking tent. It’s been a great tent over the years but the floor has holes in it, it smells funky, the zips busted, and it doesn’t keep the rain out anymore.

I could continue to repair it, but there comes a point. Treat yourself. Or ask a loved one to treat you for your birthday, mother’s or father’s day.

7. I will try something new

Never been on an overnight hike before? Try it! You’ve got a flash 4WD but have never taken it over a sand dune? Give it a shot! (Make sure you know what you’re doing first.) You often go hiking with the other half but have never headed out alone? Go on, see what it’s like (safety first, though).

Make the next year of adventure and outdoors. Visit some places you haven’t visited before. Try things you never thought you would try. Eat well. Keep the body moving. And be sure to just lay back under the sky from time to time and let the mind frolic with the clouds.

You’ll look back at it at the end of the year and will be proud of what you’ve achieved. I’m sure of it.

200 associations, groups and organisations feature in this year’s Sydney Mardi Gras parade.   $66,000 in grants to 24 individuals, community groups and not-for-profit organisations will assist in taking their parade entries to new heights of artistic creativity thanks to Google’s community grants.   Recipients were officially announced today.

“From a stunning Rainbow Thylacine by the only community-run LGBTQIA organization in Launceston, to The Institute of Many’s passionate celebration of fearless love, the recipients of these grants each have a powerful message that we’re looking forward to seeing on Parade night,” said Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras CEO, Terese Casu. “With the support of Google, and through our own philanthropic fundraising, we’ve been able to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to LGBTQI non-profit and community organisations in this program over the past three years”.

NSW Trans Youth Alliance A Facebook group of nearly 200 trans young people and allies mostly aged from 16 to 22.  The Theme is TRANS AND PROUT – TRANS IS BEAUTIFUL.  Many of these kids have had to be fearless to come out and be themselves. For many of them it also taken courage to march and show themselves to the world.

If you don’t have the funding available to build a new boathouse with a pre-planned fit-out, your best bet is to work incrementally through smaller scale improvements. Small changes can make a big difference to the available space in your boathouse now.

Once you know how much money you have available for your boathouse redevelopment, you can then assess the technical capabilities of your club. Are you able to install racks yourselves? Or do you have special considerations, such as structural limitations of the building, which mean an expert is better suited to the task?

All these factors influence the overall costs and amount of work required by your club.

Short-Term Storage Solutions

“In 1788, when European settlement began, Australia’s Aboriginal population was about 400,000. Today, over 20 million people live here. Migration has been the main driver for this change. In New South Wales, four out of every ten people are either migrants or the children of migrants.

Clearly Australia has a rich migration history. However attitudes to migration and particularly to the ideal source of migrants have changed considerably over these 218 years. The first migrants were decidedly involuntary, the convicts transported from Britain, Ireland and, to a lesser degree, other British colonies. Altogether 80,000 arrived in New South Wales between 1788 and 1840. From the 1830s they were joined by small numbers of voluntary migrants, again principally from Britain and Ireland. Some came under their own resources, others with assistance from one of the public or private schemes then available.

However, with the discovery of gold just outside Bathurst in 1851, the nature of Australian migration changed completely. People arrived in far greater numbers and from more varied backgrounds than ever before. Between 1851 and 1861 over 600,000 came and while the majority were from Britain and Ireland, 60,000 came from Continental Europe, 42,000 from China, 10,000 from the United States and just over 5,000 from New Zealand and the South Pacific. Although Australia never again saw such a rush of new immigrants, the heightened interest in settling here remained. By the time of Federation the total population was close to four million of whom one in four was born overseas. Many had been given assisted passages. Whilst the majority were of British or Irish extraction, there were significant numbers of Europeans, particularly Germans, and Chinese.

When the colonies federated in 1901, control of immigration changed. Instead of each colony managing its own system, the Commonwealth now oversaw recruiting and selection. Assisted passages were offered to encourage migration with priority still being given to the British and Irish. Despite comparatively large numbers of Chinese residents in Australia, the first legislation passed by the new parliament was the Immigration Restriction Act. Often referred to as the ‘White Australia policy’ this effectively banned Asian migration for the next fifty years. That same year the Federal Parliament passed the Pacific Islands Labourers Act to prohibit their employment as contract labourers and to deport those already here.

In 1914, with the outbreak of the First World War, migration almost ceased. Furthermore, some migrants from countries previously thought acceptable were now reclassified as ‘enemy aliens’. Those born in Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bulgaria and Turkey faced internment or general restrictions on their daily lives. Altogether about 7,000 people were interned, with camps in New South Wales at Berrima, Trial Bay and Liverpool. After the war, the 1901 Immigration Act was extended to ban people from these countries for five years. The ban on Turkish people was not lifted until 1930.

With the 1918 peace came a revival of assisted migration schemes. The British Government offered ex-servicemen free passage to one of the dominions or colonies and 17,000 arrived in Australia between 1919 and 1922. Church and community organisations such as the YMCA and the Salvation Army sponsored migrants. Small numbers also arrived independently. As the United States sought to limit migration of Southern Europeans, increasing numbers of young men from Greece and Italy paid their own way to Australia. By the 1930s, Jewish settlers began arriving in greater numbers, many of them refugees from Hitler’s Europe. However the 1929 stockmarket crash and the Great Depression put an end to sponsored migration and it was not until Australia had again fought a war that it was resumed.

Just as in the First World War, with the outbreak of the Second World War previously acceptable migrants — Germans, Italians, Japanese and Hungarians – were reclassified ‘enemy aliens’ and interned or kept under close police surveillance. No distinction was made on the basis of political sympathies. Thus, a large group of Jewish refugees that arrived on the Dunera in September 1940 were interned first at Hay in New South Wales, and later at Tatura in Victoria.

When the war ended, the government took an entirely new approach to migration. The near invasion of Australia by the Japanese caused a complete rethink of ideal population numbers. As Prime Minister Ben Chifley would later declare, ‘a powerful enemy looked hungrily toward Australia. In tomorrow’s gun flash that threat could come again. We must populate Australia as rapidly as we can before someone else decides to populate it for us.’ i In 1945, the Department of Immigration was established, headed up by Arthur Calwell. It resolved that Australia should have annual population growth of two per cent, of which only half could come from natural increase. 70,000 immigrants a year were needed to make up the difference.

However, although the government wanted the majority to be Anglo Celtic – and Arthur Calwell declared ‘It is my hope that for every foreign migrant there will be 10 people from the United Kingdom’ ii in fact the British Government was both unable and unwilling to meet such a high target. At the same time, some 11 million people had survived the Nazi labour and concentration camps and many, particularly Poles, Yugoslavs, Latvians, Ukrainians and Hungarians, were unable or unwilling to return home. Visiting Europe in 1947, Calwell therefore agreed to accept a minimum of 12,000 of these refugees a year.

On 28 November 1947, the first Displaced Persons – 844 young Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians – arrived on the General Heintzelman in Melbourne and were transferred to Bonegilla migration hostel. In exchange for free passage and assistance on their arrival, they agreed to work for the government for two years.

During the seven years this scheme operated, nearly 171,000 arrived. When this source came to an end, the Federal Government negotiated a series of migration agreements including with the Netherlands and Italy (1951), Austria, Belgium, West Germany, Greece and Spain (1952), and the United States, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland (1954). In these immediate post war years Australia was second only to Israel in the proportion of migrants accepted. As a result, Australian society became markedly less British and Irish in character. At the 1961 census, eight per cent of the population was non-British in origin with the largest group being Italians followed by Germans, Greeks and Poles.

Most migrants arrived by ship, disembarking in major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. From there they were immediately taken to migration hostels in rural areas, often in former military barracks. With accommodation fashioned from old corrugated iron Nissen huts, migrants were frequently shocked at the primitive conditions. With men and women separated into single sex barracks, shared bathrooms and kitchens and a communal dining room serving unfamiliar, and often unpalatable food, migration hostels were neither comfortable nor welcoming. The intention was that migrants stay only four to six weeks until they could be resettled near their workplace. At times however work was difficult to find and some stayed for months if not years. Improvements were slow in coming. In 1969 family units opened at Villawood and migrants no longer had to share facilities. Yet, as one Polish immigrant who arrived there in 1975 remarked, ‘For the first time in my life I had a room to myself’. Some things had not changed, as to food, ‘After one week there we’d had enough’.

All assisted migrants aged over 16 had to work. Regardless of qualifications men were classified as labourers and women as domestics. One of the largest employers was the Snowy Mountain Scheme. Australia’s largest post war project, this diverted the course of the Snowy and Tumut Rivers to provide irrigation and generate hydro-electricity. The work was hard, dangerous and meant men lived for months in isolated and primitive camps. Other migrants found work in factories, in the burgeoning iron and steel industries, on the railways and in mines.

Although the official government policy was that migrants should assimilate into Australia’s Anglo Celtic culture, many celebrated their origins through membership of clubs, sporting and religious organisations. For some such community organisations made a huge difference in overcoming a sense of isolation. For others it came when they had their own homes and families and could grow familiar fruits and vegetables and eat traditional foods.

From the 1950s, Australia began to relax its ‘White Australia’ policy. In 1956 non-European residents were allowed to apply for citizenship. Two years later the Dictation Test was abolished as a further means of exclusion. By the 1960s mixed race migration was becoming easier and in 1967 Australia entered into its first migration agreement with a non-European country, in this case Turkey.

Then in 1972 Australians elected their first Labor government since 1948. As Minister for Immigration, Al Grassby radically changed official policy. The quota system, based on country of origin and preservation of racial ‘homogeneity’, was replaced by ‘structured selection’. Migrants were to be chosen according to personal and social attributes and occupational group rather than country of origin. In 1973, declaring Australia a ‘multicultural’ society, Al Grassby announced that every relic of past ethnic or racial discrimination had been abolished. The Australian Citizenship Act of that year declared that all migrants were to be accorded equal treatment.

In 1975 the first of what would become known as ‘boat people’ arrived in Darwin. More than 25 000 arrived in the next thirty years, initially from East Timor and then from Vietnam, China and, most recently, the Middle East. All are subject to compulsory internment while their claims of refugee status are assessed. Although Australia has been criticised by the United Nations and Amnesty International for the injustice of interring all illegal migrants, particularly children, it continues to this day.

In 1988 the Fitzgerald Inquiry led to further changes in migration with a move away from ‘family reunion’ towards an emphasis on skilled and business categories. The assisted passage scheme had ended in 1981 and only refugees are given any level of support on their arrival in Australia. In 1996, for the first time in Australia’s migration history, the number of British migrants arriving fell to second place behind New Zealand. Renewed prosperity in Europe has also meant that, where once Italians and Greeks made up the majority of non-British new arrivals, today, after New Zealand, it is people from China, South Africa and India. Conflicts overseas have also meant that Australia is now taking refugees from countries previously unrepresented. In 2006 the fastest growing refugee group is from Sudan followed by Afghanistan and Iraq.”

Pictures: Christmas Pt 1 Hey kiddies, it's been a looong loooong time. Yes. I've been quite busy but will catch up what happened in the last few weeks. I stopped on the third day after my parents arrival. The very sad thing is they left again two weeks ago after being 6 weeks here. I was incredibly sad and the few days there were many tears. But I'm better now. It's not that I've waited for today to write a new blog post, but today it's ONE YEAR AGO that I left Germany. Time flies! I've had such a good time in these 12 months and am so grateful I had/have toe opportunity to do this!!! Okay, back to my parents then. We had a lovely time, met very often as I still wasn't working until January 9 and one week after their arrival it was Christmas. Christmas (here celebrated on 25th) was very very different compared to Germany. It was quite hot (did you ever celebrate Christmas in a Summary dress and couldn't stop to sweat?!) and it was a big Christmas as the whole Aussie family came so it was very nice. I could mention that we were celebrating in Arthur's 🐶house (Paul's father and stepmother). I got really nice presents: an 8 weeks gym membership, a golden necklace with a P, a perfume, make up, earrings and new earphones. On 24th we were invited to Paul's aunt Angela which was like a pre-Christmas celebration. It was raining cats and dogs, but just beautiful. 26th we were invited by Paul's other aunt Susie and his uncle David. They have a very big boat (with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms over 3 floors) and we had a nice cruise. First we went close to the harbour (opera house and harbour bridge) as a big yacht race as starting (Sydney to Hobart). Then we drove to a little bay, stopped there for two hours and had a nice swim in crystal clear water (no sharks). Then it was almost New Year's Eve and we were invited again to Arthur's house. We had a big Picknick (around 30 people) on the ex-tennis court, everyone brought a blanket and something to eat. At 9 pm there was a small firework for the kids but it wasn't really small :D And then at 12 the big one. Very impressive, I can tell you. On January 1st it was kind of relaxing and packing my stuff as we left to Jervis bay on January 2nd. Jervis bay is a little beach village two hours south from Sydney. We hired a beach house there for 8 people. It was my parents, Isa, Paul and me. For two days there also came Sue and Grant (Pauls stepmother and dad). I found out that it's a lot of fun to play table tennis (Tennistisch, so Paul) and a card game called Yanif. Every day we went to the beach, mostly to Murrays beach) so it was a very relaxing holiday. After one week we came back (January 9) and the 10th was the day I started back at ITS. That's the job in the contact centre I already did last year before doing my lovely farmwork. I could start there again without even applying. First two weeks it was training which was a bit boring. I've already done all that stuff last year and sometimes I was really thinking, when will this training finally be over :D But I did it and could remember much more things as I thought I would. So after the training I started immediately with the next modules and am "polished bronze" now which means that I get more chats about more topics. I'm in the afternoon shift which means that I work from 2-10 PM (14-23). Most people say "shit" when I tell them, but it's cool! I go to bed between midnight and 0.30 and set my alarm between 8 and 8.30, sometimes 9 and depending on what's my plan for the morning. I have a new system now, I do all the shopping every Monday and cook after shopping all the meals for Monday-Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday I'm off again and one of these days is my chest day. So on my not-cheat day I cool he meals for the rest of the week. This system allows me a lot of time before going to work, so I have no problems going to the gym, meeting friends for coffee or relaxing. I was still able to see my parents when I started work so we really had a great time. It's hard to know I won't see them in the next 13-14 months! Rest of my life is fine. My colleagues are really nice, the only thing is that I had some problems in my room wiI h mould (my roommates as well) but I hope I've fought it now. I'm now at the beach waiting for a friend, 36 degrees today. Tonight I'm going to Joy's birthday (an English girl I met in cairns who's currently in Sydney) and then probably going out with my colleagues. Bye for now!

How To Work Less And Make More

All the way back in 2010 I invited my fellow-Aussie friend James Schramko to appear on my podcast.

During that interview, James explained his entrepreneur’s journey story, from taking home a very good salary selling cars, to becoming an affiliate marketer, and eventually owning several online businesses providing outsourcing services like web design and SEO.

Fast forward almost a decade later and James and I decided to reunite and do a joint podcast, which means you can hear this episode on both my show and on the Super Fast Business podcast hosted by James.

James recently published a book, Work Less, Make More: The Counter-Intuitive Approach To Building A Profitable Business And A Life You Actually Love. This topic is obviously dear to my heart, as it’s a philosophy that I have embodied with my own Laptop Lifestyle methodology.

This podcast is very much focused on this core idea, as James and I explain to you how we have structured our businesses and lives to free up time and make more money.

We also do a deep dive into email, since it’s usually the first area where entrepreneurs can make some simple changes to free up significant time, for example hiring someone to take over your email from InboxDone.com (and yes I got to plug my company a lot in this podcast — thanks James!).

Selling His Companies And Becoming A Surfer

Over the last decade, at least from my perspective of James, there have been two major changes.

He got into surfing — and I mean REALLY got into it. Most of the social media updates he does are related to his regular surfs in Australia, The Philippines, and Maldives.

The other change is James sold his two outsourcing companies, freeing him up to focus almost entirely on coaching. During the interview, James explains how and why he sold his companies.

Currently, James runs two programs, a membership site called Super Fast Business for entrepreneurs earning in the several thousands to low six-figure level, and his Silver Circle coaching, for entrepreneurs earning at least half a million a year profit (the medium being $3 Million a year companies).

James also runs an annual conference in Sydney, and a mastermind retreat in the Maldives, living on a boat on the water, a pretty nice place to talk business.

As James mentions on the podcast, he’s working behind the scenes with a lot of very high profile entrepreneurs, primarily helping them to do what the title of his book is – to work less and earn more. You could call James a surfer-business-guru to the experts!

If you’re currently working too hard in your business, this podcast will open your eyes to some basic changes you can begin to make.
