7ebra return with new single 'Normal Song' via PNKSLM
MAY 8 - Malmö twin duo 7ebra - AKA Inez and Ella Johansson - release new single ‘Normal Song’ via cult Stockholm label PNKSLM (Shitkid, Miss World, Holy). It’s the first new music since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Bird Hour in May 2023. ‘Normal Song’ is a natural continuation thematically from Bird Hour, with the new single finding the duo not only embracing their melancholy, but celebrating it.
"I see the song being about trying to please everyone but failing, having a lot of things that need to get done, but all you want to do is close yourself off and cry in the corner" explains singer Inez. "But then you think about it and say no, actually, I shouldn't have to suppress this despair I'm feeling - I wanna cry in an open field. It's normal to feel these things and you don't have to hide it, if you don't want to."
"When we originally had the idea for the song, it was sort of a lighthearted joke actually" continues Ella. "But it quite quickly resonated with us, and we realized that this could maybe turn into a proper song. We recorded it with Jens Lindgård at Gula Studion here in Malmö, and I think his production matches the story and juxtaposition of the song perfectly. On first listen it maybe sounds like a lighthearted festival banger, especially with the big pumping chorus, but then you realise it's actually quite sad."
Built around their telepathic harmonies, close-up guitar and droning mellotron washes, it's a spartan indie sound. The style is equally inflected by dark folk elements, austere post-punk and woozy slacker, with earworms choruses.
‘Normal Song’ is out now digitally and is also set to be released on limited edition 7" vinyl on July 5th alongside the another new track ‘Daybreak’ via PNKSLM Recordings. 7ebra are also heading out on tour in May supporting Arab Strap as well as visiting Denmark together with Kindsight (details below), with more tour dates to follow soon.
Beautiful but punk, minimalist but epic, the duo had previously made their mark on the Swedish music scene, with support slots for Future Islands, Bob Hund and The Dandy Warhols already under their belts. They also played shows at End of the Road, Bluedot and SXSW festivals last year, as well as for an extensive UK tour with Teleman.

ALISON GOLDFRAPP @ MANCHESTER ACADEMY
The magnetic synth-pop artist Alison Godfrapp stopped off at Manchester Academy as part of her Love Invention Tour. I was photographing for Louder Than War. There was just 3 photographers in the pit tonight, which was perfect. The other Mcr toggers were down at the Apollo shooting Renee Rapp. I know who I woud rather shoot.
I've seen Goldfrapp a couple of times (never solo) but never taken photos of Alison in the pit, last time it was from the crowd at Bluedot Festival 2017, or taking some snaps from my seat at the Lowry back in 2014.
Tonights show from my 3 songs was just packed with drama, Alison is such a consummate performer. Amelia tells it better...
“….brooding, stabbing synth and atmospheric soundscape transition the performance from high-bpm rainbows to sensuous grittiness..”
Check out the review on Louder Than War by Amelia Fearon here:

Tinariwen - “Anemouhagh”
Tinariwen, the legendary, Grammy-winning Tuareg collective will release their new album, Amatssou, on May 19th, 2023.
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Later this month, Tinariwen will embark on their first US tour since 2019, beginning on May 27th at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music and including stops in Los Angeles, New York and more. A list of full dates are below and tickets are on sale now. For decades, Tinariwen have remained ambassadors for the Tuareg people, a way of life in tune with the natural world, which is under threat as never before. Throughout Amatssou — the legendary collective’s ninth studio album — Tinariwen set out to explore the shared sensibilities between their trademark desert blues and the vibrant country music of rural America. Recorded in Djanet, an oasis in the desert of southern Algeria located in Tassili N’Ajjer National Park, with additional production on two tracks by Daniel Lanois (Brian Eno, U2, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Peter Gabriel, Willie Nelson), Amatssou finds Tinariwen’s signature snaking guitar lines and hypnotic grooves seamlessly co-existing alongside banjos, fiddles and pedal steel. Though Tuareg culture is as old as that of ancient Greece or Rome, the songs of Amatssou speak to the current and often tough reality of Tuareg life today. Unsurprisingly, there are impassioned references to Mali’s ongoing political and social turmoil. Full of poetic allegory, the lyrics call for unity and freedom. There are songs of struggle and resistance with oblique references to the recent desperate political upheavals in Mali and the increasing power of the Salafists. Tinariwen’s message has never sounded more urgent and compelling than it does on Amatssou.

I got a nice surprise in late May 2017. I entered a competition through Sky at Night’s facebook page to win a pair weekend camping tickets for Bluedot 2017 (I didn’t just do this for me, I thought my girlfriend needed a nice surprise as she works so hard, and she’s into astronomy too so what better way to get her away from all the stresses of work than to take her to a geeky music/science festival (if I won)?), and on 24th May 2017 I received an email from the editorial assistant at Sky at night Magazine with the subject ‘BLUEDOT’. I opened the email and got the biggest shock ever. I won. I never win anything! so I told my girlfriend the news and I think its fair to say she was excited but needed to clear it with work to see if she could have Friday 7th, Saturday 8th July off. Her work sadly couldn’t let her have both days off, so instead, she got the evening of Saturday 8th July off. which meant we got one night under the stars at Jodrell bank observatory in Cheshire. Still awesome news. As time passed, I got the tickets by email and when it came to the day of the festival, she finished work even earlier than expected so we got there between 5 and 6pm. We unloaded the tent, got set up in one of the campsites, once the tent was put up, airbed blown up and put in the tent with the pillows and sleeping bag that was two joined together, and had the camping cooker with food and drink we bought all in the tent, we were ready to explore. Oh my word, what a weekend it was. Great music from Orbital, Alt-J and many others like Warpaint, Soulwax, Nightmares on wax, etc...mind blowing science going on all weekend, art installations that made it feel like you were on a different planet...It was so awesome. We both thoroughly enjoyed every second.
I still don't believe I deserved to win though. There are other better people than me, and even though I won the competition fair and square, I feel guilty that I won.
‘Never doubt yourself and the possibility that you may hold the key to success. Anything is possible, so dream big. Everyone has their chance to shine and have their moment in the spotlight, so why not you? You are awesome, believe in yourself. As long as you’re kind to others, care about others, treat others with respect and think of others first, it WILL be your turn to get something awesome in return.’
