Energon’s Watchlist: Spirit Powers and the like
The definition of spirit powers is admittedly a little loose on this one. These shows have spirits and/or powers that may or may not be connected. Looking for more recommendations? Check out my watchlist tag! The series are not based around romance, are not harem, and have been personally watched and enjoyed by me.
Noblesse (13eps + ova)
The ‘Noblesse’, Raizel, is awakened after 820 years of slumber. His servant, Frankenstein, enrolls him in high school (of which Frankenstein is the director) for a chance to learn about the modern world and stay hidden from the mysterious organization The Union. The series is a mix of everyday life blended into fighting and supernatural abilities.
The series is good at using humour to make the tension not feel overwhelming, and because of that, could heighten tension when needed. Most episodes end with a post-credits gag scene. The show had characters you could like, some you learn to like, and a few you actively want dead. There’s actually an OVA that’s a direct prequel to the series called Noblesse: Awakening, but I didn’t notice this until later, so I just thought it had a really interesting method of storytelling. A good show with plenty of pretty men to look at.
Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist- (Kai Byoui Ramune, 13eps)
When odd ailments— something between a rare disease and a supernatural phenomenon— occur, it’s a job for the childish and foul-mouthed, Dr. Ramune, and his stoic, high school assistant, Kuro. A medical supernatural comedy about illnesses caused by emotional distress.
The dynamic is similar to Mob Psycho 100, if Reigan had some kind of actual ability and it was Ritsu instead of Mob. This makes perfect sense when you watch it. Most of the diseases involve things turning into food, and aren’t particularly gross or icky. Worst one is a guy’s dick turns into a chikuwa. It’s an easy watch that seems light, but occasionally delves into more serious topics. It’s a good pallet cleanser and easily the least intense of the list.
Blue Exorcist (Ao No Exorcist, 25eps + Kyoto Saga 12eps)
Okumura Rin is a normal— if rebellious— teenager. At least until he discoverers he’s the half-demon son of Satan. Suddenly he has new powers, everyone wants him dead, and Satan just killed his adoptive father. Vowing revenge, Rin decides to become an exorcist and heads to school alongside his twin brother Yukio.
Ah yes, that little known anime Blue Exorcist. That first Aniplex jingle was like a gut punch of nostalgia. Similar to Full Metal Alchemist— both in style, and in being humorous while maintaining a serious plotline. Rin really feels like 16 year old, in a way that many teenage protagonists don’t. But with everything Rin goes through sometimes I really had to stop and holy shit this is a kid. No romance— if you ignore whatever tf is going on with Rin and Suguro. I can’t stop thinking about the hairclip. Rin is an extremely expressive character who’s very likeable (and notably can’t lie for shit). Anyway, I want to talk about this anime and that’s why it’s here.
Bungo Stray Dogs (Bungou Stray Dogs, 37eps + Dead Apple + Bungo Stray Dogs WAN! 12eps)
Kicked out of his orphanage and on the verge of starving to death, Atsushi saves a suicidal man from drowning and becomes entangled in the Armed Detective Agency— a group that deals with the cases the police and military won’t touch. A supernatural mystery series with humour and a lot of action. When you’re finished you get to watch WAN!— cute and hilarious episodes of cartoon shorts involving the more mundane life of the Agency and Port Mafia.
This has been on my to-watch list for a long time, but I probably wouldn’t have been in a good enough place to have watched it back then. There’s a running gag about a character wanting and trying to commit suicide— it’s not at all subtle and I ask that everyone with a history of depression assess whether this is the right time to watch this show for themselves. The first arcs of season two and three are both flashbacks, a little darker than the rest. You technically could skip them, but they add a lot of understanding to the characters and the some plot aspects. Watch an episode of WAN! after as a treat.
I genuinely really enjoyed this series! Very few primary and secondary characters actually die, but it will absolutely tear apart anyone else. Fight scenes don’t go on too long, which I’ve had problems with in other things. This series is the basically traumatized characters found family trope, but if your family was also your super dangerous workplace. The main character, Atsushi, is realistic and personable. Not some optimistic, happy-go-lucky, ‘I’ll make it through the power of believing in myself!’ protagonist— he’s a traumatized 18 year old trying his best. I could write paragraphs about Atsushi, but to summarize: he has panic attacks, and he’s not a golden prodigy trope— doesn’t excel at everything and isn’t expected to.

␥ Anime of the Day
Blue Exorcist
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Supernatural
Has 1 season, containing 25 episodes
Sequel: Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga
3 OVA
Specials: 10 episodes
1 Movie
Languages: Both Sub and Dub
This world consists of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. The first is the world in which the humans live, Assiah. The other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Ordinarily, travel between the two, and indeed any kind of contact between the two, is impossible. However the demons can pass over into this world by possessing anything that exist within it. Satan the god of demons, but there's one thing that he doesn't have, and that's a substance in the human world that is powerful enough to contain him!! For that purpose he created Rin, his son from a human woman, but will his son agree to his plans? Or will he become something else...? An exorcist? (I’m not sure where the original source is from)

I have no one to talk to about this so I’m just gonna screech into the void
I just finished rewatching Blue Exorcist because it’s probably my favorite anime ever, and I was just thinking about the relationship between Satan and Yuri
And like...it wasn’t really toxic? Satan actually seemed to be well-intentioned? Like I feel like that might be an unpopular opinion, but even when I watched the anime the first time I felt kind of bad for Satan, which is one of the weirdest sentences I’ve ever written
I’m not saying that Satan was a good guy, he was definitely a piece of shit and Rin and Yukio were right to stop him and even kill him if they can, but like? Satan seemed to have actually loved Yuri and wanted to learn more about the human world. He didn’t know what life or death was until he met her, and said that he wanted life, which was why Rin and Yukio were born in the first place. And with the whole scene after he’s banished back to Gehenna and is talking to Yuri he just seems so upset that he wasn’t able to create “the world that he and Yuri wanted”
And it’s been shown multiple times in the series that a lot of demons aren’t inherently evil, some are pretty much harmless and others like Kuro just attacked people out of anger and sadness. So I feel like a world combining Gehenna and Ascia (idk how they’re spelled) wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, unless it caused the destruction of either all humans or all demons
idk my point behind this is I feel like Satan was well-intentioned in his idea—definitely too hellbent about Yuri and her ideas—and he went about it in the absolute worst way possible. Also Yuri and Satan is lowkey a cute ship
Then again I haven’t watched any of the OVAs, the Kyoto saga, or read the manga so there’s probably more that I’m missing
#ignore me#blue exorcist#this probably looks so weird to anyone who doesnt know about the anime#if anyone wants to know where i get my love of humans loving monsters#its from stuff like this#and tokyo ghoul#i just love morally grey stuff#or like villains that have a good reasoning behind things#even if satan was probably a bit too obsessed with yuri's idea

Y'all got any other anime recs?
i can just give ya all my fav anime fdfhdghk
TLDR;
sailor moon*
inuyasha
digimon*
Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne
Ao no Exorcist / Blue Exorcist*
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (16+)*
Kill la Kill (16+)*
My Hero Academia (duh)*
Danganronpa
Tiger and Bunny*
(anime with a * have GREATLY influenced my art and or writing style and idea of what a good story is; AKA THOSE ARE MY ABSOLUTE FAVES)
longer explanations under the cut
Sailor Moon (the oringinal one from the 90s; watch as sub if u want to go in all serious, but the dub is fun too if u like watching it more relaxed ((or with friends bc shits funny)))it has 200 Episodes and 5 MoviesThere IS a remake but I’d say watch that after you’ve seen the original.Summary:Usagi Tsukino is a normal 14 year old girl.. she’s like you and me... sleeps in, loves to eat sweets, loves to play video games, has bad grades, kinda nervous about making friends, kinda broke and just wants to have a good time. But one day her life turns over when suddenly she’s supposed to become a magical girl to defend Tokyo from evil and find a mysterious princess from the moon. (this also involves a talking cat how cool is that)Noteworthy mentions: gay and trans characters? hell yeah! (even if they join the party really late)
Inuyasha! I never saw the english dub, nor japanese dub so no info on which one to watch. just go with preferencehas 193 Episodes.Summary: Kagome Higurashi is yet again an average girl; but she lives at a shrine that has been home to her family for a long time. One day she falls into the well inside the shrine when trying to get her cat (iirc i didnt watch it in 10 years oops) and ends up waking up in feudal japan. She doesn’t really know what happened but thats when she meets inuyasha, who is nailed to a tree with a magical arrow. She saves him and that’s kinda how their destinies collide. again; inuyasha is a half-demon who jumps into fights with a huge fucking sword and its a tru adventure.
Digimon! All digimon seasons should be watched in japanese (or german or latinx spanish (because other languages like english and french did not use the japanese soundtrack. and the english soundtrack is HORRIBLE. bad. hideous. please watch in japanese, german or latinx spanish.)You should start watching Digimon Adventure (1 and 2 and 3)but those two together will be 130 Episodes (and this shit is 3 seasons) jkafhaskjafter seeing season 1 and 2 you should watch the Digimon Movie (my fav movie of all times) and THEN move on to Digimon Adventure triThis is the original digimon series and you don’t NEED to watch it to udenrstand the many reboots, but it’s nice to have seen it to get the references (plus its just REALLY REALLY GOOD!)[theres a lot of gay tension between certain characters but canonically ofc its not happening I GUESS but whatever them gay]Once u got all those down you can watch Digimon Tamers! It has 54 Episodes and is my personal fav season! Takato is a dreamer like you and me and he wants fictional characters to be real! He makes a fucking digimon OC and!?!? IT COMES TO LIFE!!!!!!!!! this season is so fucking good yall. It’s so good.I personally don’t like Digimon Frontier but if u want to give it a try go ahead! The kids THEMSELVES turn into digimon here! idk how many episodes it has tbh but the soundtrack is a bop.Digimon Data Squad is also really good!! the characters are more grown up and the approach is generally a tad more mature (to tamers is also pretty mature considering those are like 12) data squad has 48 Episodesanything after that i didnt rly bother watching but if ya want u can check it out
Kamikaze Kaito Jeannea magical girl anime that i liked a lot as a kid? didnt watch it anymore since 2012 but i have fond memoriesimagine that god himself assigned magical girls?44 episodes, watch in japanese
Ao no Exorcist / Blue Exorcist25 Episodes of the original anime; after epsiode 17 the anime does it’s own thing, not following the mangaWatch season 2 after episode 17 (or finish the first anime first, and then watch Kyoto Saga; and then read the manga (it’s still ongoing iirc? my adhd ass didnt finish the manga yet so idk))The anime is about Rin Okumura, who turns out to be the son of satan. Instead of accepting his fate though, he decides to become an exorcist, and not just any normal exorcist, but an exorcist so powerful that he will defeat satan personally.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica12 episodes and a movie of magical girl adventure.it will get VERY FUCKED UP so if ur very sensitive or death/unreality triggers u then us houldnt watch it.I’d say u need to be very mature to stomach this. But it’s oh so worth it. One of my all time favourite anime!!!!!!
Kill la KillAgain for mature audiences (mostly because of the very suggestive outfits and the high amounts of blood. also trigger warning for pedophilia and parent abuse and incest :((( its all just one episode where it happens but its. its bad. (the evil doer dies in the end tho. die bitch.))24 episodesand an OVA!amazing soundtrack, characters and story! (we like to joke that this is basically SA2 but with lesbian human shadow the hedgehog jakshfaskj)
If ur following this blog ur already watching My Hero Academia, and if not wHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING ON THIS BLOG IN THE FIRST PLACE???????????
if u want to u can watch the first dangan ronpa anime (and after that watch playthroughs of the games) !warning theres lots and lots of blood and death and the first game/anime is a little transphobic, and Girls Stop Having Giand Bobbies Challenge but i promise its a good series with a really in depth story and characters!!(if u want to know more about what order to watch all the shit hmu after u finished the anime)
if you like My Hero Academia you MUST (i repeat MUST) watch Tiger and Bunny25 Episodes and 2 movies of super hero goodness. It’s MHA but with adults. Gay and trans characters? Hell yeah! Did the creators of the anime drink respect poc juice? YES!
i bet theres more but im so tired.................... ask me fore specific genres and i’ll have a rec some other time

let me throw my expertise in the ring:
(these are all for the protagonists)
Natsume and Blue Exorcist, those are peak whump
Wakfu, at certain points (Netflix)
Bungou Stray Dogs has an emotionally whumpy premise that rears its head up sometimes with great affect. oh boy.
Seven Deadly Sins has some everywhere but may take a little bit to really pay off but in the second season theres a whump 2 episodes that will blow your socks off with outstanding bromance too. and the upcoming seasons are chock full of both. (Netflix)
Magi the Labyrinth- Whump and bromance. Pays off in the first 2 episodes, hits you hard mid season 1 again (Netflix)
Inuyasha is a classic, and has good whump but sometimes skips aftercare
Wolf’s Rain - Good bromance and a few very good whumps
Gintama- usually a gag show but when it gets real it gets Whumpy. also home to one of my fave bromances
Drifters - whump and bromance just not as often as I want it
Sword Art Online - Specifically the premise of Season 3
God Eater - havent rewatched but there were some nice whump moments in this short series.
Rurouni Kenshin - there’s some good whump and bromance in this especially during the kyoto saga, which i believe has it’s own remake movie to be more accessible. also a hour long OVA with bro and sick whump with a sad ending called Reflections (Netflix)
My Hero Academia- A lot of vanilla whump and friendship. Good stuff.
Persona 5 - whump cruelly held over you as constant flash forwards while friendships develop.
Mob Psycho 100 - mostly emotional whump but good
Tanaka kun is always listless - watch ep 1 & 3 even if slice of life isn’t your thing. it’s cute and wonderful
FMA:B has whump just not enough.
The Big 3 anime all have whump, but since it’s shounen, it tends to lack in the aftercare department. WITH SOME NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS
Prince of Tennis- 2 very good whump episodes in a sea of him not being hurt
Psycho-Pass - season 1 for the male lead. good stuff.
Noragami - Oh my god i almost forgot Noragami. This is So Very Whumpy emotionally and otherwise with great friendship developed with lots of characters. If you watch one show from the list it should be this one. (Netflix).
Kekkai Sansen or Blood Barrier Battlefront (?) great very whumpable main character with good friendships. Especially look out for ep 1x02 and 1x06, then you’ll be hooked. The dub is also laugh out loud funny
Do you know any whumpy animes?
Sorry, I’m not too familar with that genre. :(
But, there is a blog called @anime-whump that you may like :)

About Fate/Grand Order -First Order-
The year is AD 2017.
The last era in which magecraft still thrived.
The Chaldea Security Organization was founded to focus on preserving the continuation of human history. They observe a world which magecraft couldn’t observe and science couldn’t measure all to prevent the certain extinction of humanity. But one day, the future that Chaldea continued to observe disappears and humanity’s extinction in 2019 becomes clear. Rather, it had already happened. The cause seems to be related to Fuyuki, a provincial town in Japan, in the year AD 2004. There, an “unobservable region” that had not existed before appears.
Based on the assumption that Fuyuki is the reason for humanity’s extinction, Chaldea issues an order to explore, investigate, and possibly destroy this singularity – a quest for the Holy Grail: the Grand Order.

About Blue Exorcist Assiah: the realm of humans. Gehenna: the realm of demons. Normally, these two dimensions would never intersect, but having possessed all material substances, the demons are now intruding on the human world. Fortunately, among the human race there are those who have the ability to exorcise such demons - the Exorcists. Among these humans is Rin Okumura, an energetic, young man who has been raised by Shiro Fujimoto, an eminent priest, with Rin’s twin brother, Yukio. One day, he discovers the shocking truth that his biological father is in fact the most powerful demon of them all – Satan. As the border between “Assiah” and “Gehenna” is threatened by intruding demons, Rin vows to become the ultimate exorcist and defeat his own father and hone his skills as an exorcist at True Cross Academy with other exorcist candidates. The series has been adapted into a film released across North America and made its U.S. network television debut on Adult Swim’s TOONAMI™ in 2014. Most recently, the series returned in 2017 with Blue Exorcist -Kyoto Saga-, adapted from the Kyoto Impure King arc of the manga series.
