Scientists have published new evidence showing that selective planting of vegetation between roads and playgrounds can substantially cut toxic traffic-derived air pollution reaching school children.

The new findings, published this week in the journal Scientific Reports, demonstrate that roadside vegetation can be designed, installed and maintained to achieve rapid, significant and cost-effective improvement of air quality.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution has been linked with a range of health risks including cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological health. These risks are likely to be exacerbated in young children attending primary schools next to busy roads as their major organs are still developing and children have a higher breathing rate than adults.

Exposure to fine particulate matter in air pollution is reportedly the largest environmental risk factor contributing to cardiovascular deaths and disease globally, and is linked to around six to nine million premature deaths each year.

A team of researchers led by Barbara Maher, Emeritus Professor at Lancaster University, and supported by Groundwork Greater Manchester, installed ‘tredges’ (trees managed as a head-high hedge) at three Manchester primary schools during the summer school holidays of 2019.

One school had an ivy screen installed, another had western red cedar and the third school had a mixture of western red cedar, Swedish birch and an inner juniper hedge. A fourth school, with no planting, was used as a control.

The school with the ivy screen saw a substantial reduction in playground particulate matter concentrations, but an increase in black carbon. The playground with the mixture of planting saw lower reductions in air pollution to that of the western red cedar.

The biggest overall reductions in particulate matter and black carbon were shown at the school with western red cedar planted. The results showed almost half (49%) of black carbon and around 46% and 26% of the fine particulates, PM2.5 and PM1 emitted by passing traffic were captured by the western red cedar tredges.

The tredges also significantly reduced the magnitude and frequency of acute ‘spikes’ in air pollution reaching the playgrounds.

Professor Maher said: “Our findings show that we can protect school playgrounds, with carefully chosen and managed tredges, which capture air pollution particulates on their leaves. This helps to prevent at least some of the health hazards imposed on young children at schools next to busy roads where the localised air quality is damagingly poor, and it can be done quickly and cost-effectively.”

The scientists believe that western red cedar performed best at preventing the particulate air pollution from reaching the playground because its prolific, small, rough, evergreen leaves act like a filter, capturing particulate pollution and stopping it circulating in the atmosphere. When it rains, the particulates wash off — ending up in the soil or drains — enabling the leaves to then capture more particulate pollution.

Professor Maher said: “Western red cedar tredges work well because this species’ leaves form millions of tiny rough corrugated projections, each of which can bump into the particulates suspended in the air and ‘capture’ them in their ridges, furrows and pores.

“This takes them out of the local atmosphere and therefore reduces the exposure to these traffic-sourced air pollution particulates of the children and staff in the playground.”

The researchers believe species like ivy were not as effective at capturing particulate pollution as the western red cedar because of the smooth, waxy surface of its leaves. It therefore acts more akin to a fence where it blocks the transport of some particulate matter but is not as effective at capturing and thus removing it from the air.

The researchers suggest these benefits highlighted by the study are not just limited to schools and that carefully selected and managed tredges could be used in other parts of urban areas to reduce the damaging health impacts of exposure to traffic pollution.

The study was supported with funding from Manchester City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester, and Groundwork Greater Manchester which installed the tredges and ran ‘citizen science’ workshops with classes from the schools to highlight issues around air quality and steps young people and their families can take to make a difference.

Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Environment for Manchester City Council, said: “We were keen to be part of this study as Manchester seeks to embrace innovation in our efforts to become a greener city with cleaner air and tackle climate change. We note these positive findings with interest and will consider how we can use the lessons from this project to make further targeted use of green infrastructure in the city.”

Are Arsenal Premier League title contenders? They can certainly test unbeaten Liverpool in Saturday evening’s showdown at the Emirates Stadium, says Andy Schooler…

We should find out a little bit more about the Premier League title race – and the related chase for a top-four spot – on Saturday evening at the Emirates.

At the start of the season, few would have expected Arsenal to have 22 points after 10 games but they have started well under new manager Unai Emery.

They come into this game unbeaten in eight in the league (13 in all competitions) but you can legitimately ask, ‘who have they actually played?’ since their August 18 defeat to Chelsea. Certainly none of the ‘Big Six’.

In the same period, Liverpool have won at Spurs, held Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and drawn at home to Manchester City.

Liverpool firm favourites

Such results show why Liverpool are just [2.06] to continue their recent dominance of the Gunners by winning the game – Arsenal last beat the Merseysiders in April 2015.

Yet Arsenal are sure to have their backers at [3.8] (the draw is a [3.9] shot) and a big reason for that is they clearly have a serious goal threat.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored more league goals than any of Liverpool’s renowned front three, while Alexandre Lacazette has also impressed.

Arsenal cut through both Fulham and Leicester recently playing some scintillating football and while clearly they face better quality here, if they can continue to knock the ball around with such confidence, they should trouble a team which has conceded only four goals so far.

As . explains in his tactical preview, Liverpool haven’t really faced such a test this season.

How good is Reds’ defence?

When they have faced quality opposition, Liverpool have usually let goals in. They conceded at Spurs and Chelsea, while only a woeful Riyad Mahrez penalty stopped Man City from finding the net against them. In Europe, PSG scored twice at Anfield, while Napoli also breached a backline which has admittedly looked much improved since the arrival of Virgil van Dijk in January.

It is also worth noting that towards the back end of last season, with van Dijk in the ranks, Liverpool conceded at least twice against Manchester United, Spurs, Roma (twice) and Real Madrid.

Whether you put Arsenal in such a bracket is, I suppose, key to how you will bet in this one, but I suggest their attack is more than good enough to find the target.

Whether they can keep Liverpool out is another matter entirely.

Injury concerns for hosts

Arsenal have already conceded 13. They certainly haven’t been helped by injuries and they continue to be a concern ahead of this match.

Of particular significance are problems in the full-back positions with both Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal doubtful for this one due to hamstring issues.

Full-back is not an area you want to be papering over cracks in against Liverpool where Sadio Mane and Mo Salah always look ready to wreak havoc. Bellerin’s pace would definitely be a big loss in attempts to deal with the in-form Mane, not to mention marauding left-back Andy Robertson.

Liverpool’s worries are fewer with Jurgen Klopp’s summer business really beginning to bear fruit with Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri now looking real starting options.

Liverpool definitely deserve favouritism but I’m not sure they should be a short as they are. This is Arsenal’s biggest test for two and a half months and in that period they’ve done almost everything asked of them. It’s not too difficult to draw the conclusion that they are a better side now than they were when losing to Man City and Chelsea in August and I expect them to at least challenge the supposedly superior team.

Expect goals

As already suggested, goals can be expected – I don’t see Arsenal coming up with a strong tactical plan, as City did at Anfield, to thwart their opponents. And if such a plan is not forthcoming, this could easily be a ding-dong affair.

The odds give little away though – over 2.5 goals is just [1.56]; over 3.5 is [2.36].

For those who like historical stats, the goal totals in the last five meetings between these two have been 6-4-4-7-6.

Arsenal can fight back

So what should be the betting approach to this one?

While tempted by a double-chance bet on the hosts and the draw at [1.92], I’m opting for something considerably longer – Liverpool/Draw in the half time/full time market. Here’s why.

Arsenal haven’t led at the break in any of their matches thus far with 75% of their goals (18 of 24) being scored in the second half. At the other end, they’ve conceded 62% of goals in the first half.

Liverpool’s stats are almost the complete opposite – they have led at the interval eight times out of 10 so far, while 60% of their goals have come in the first half.

They tend to fly out of the blocks, swamping their opponents with their pressing game, the Anfield clash with Man City being a case in point, albeit strong start wasn’t rewarded with a goal on that occasion.

It is that pressing which is often blamed for Liverpool’s poorer second halves as energy levels drain.

If that happens again, the statistical evidence suggests Arsenal could make them pay.

The Gunners have also shown greater resilience this season – no team has won more points (7) from losing positions.

With all that in mind, Liverpool/Draw is worth a dabble at [16].

Same Game Multi

For reasons given above, I like over 0.5 Liverpool goals in the first half, over 0.5 Arsenal goals in the second half. Throw in Granit Xhaka to be carded – he has been booked in three of four midfield appearances against Liverpool and could be even more exposed if he starts at left-back – and the price reaches a tasty 7.7.

Opta fact

Liverpool have scored at least three goals in each of their last five league games against Arsenal (17 in total). Liverpool have never done this in six consecutive top-flight games against an opponent, while no side has ever done so in six against the Gunners.

Maurizio Sarri: Community Shield loss shows issues for new Chelsea boss

Chelsea’s defeat by Manchester City in the Community Shield showed just how big a job Maurizio Sarri faces to turn his side into title contenders.

Sarri already knew that he could be about to lose some of his best players – Eden Hazard, Willian and Thibaut Courtois – who have all been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge this summer.

That in itself is a lot to contend with, especially in your first few weeks as manager of a club such as Chelsea.

But what Sarri saw at Wembley will also have told him a lot about what his other players are capable of, in terms of fitting into his system or reaching the required standards.

He has issues to tackle right through his team and, with Thursday being the transfer deadline for incoming players, there is not much time to decide whether to address them in the transfer market.

Can Chelsea keep Hazard and Willian – and keep them on board?

Real have been linked with Hazard, who does not start pre-season training until Monday, while Barcelona are supposedly interested in Willian, a second-half substitute against City.

If they are both going to stay then they are the ideal wide men to play in Sarri’s 4-3-3 system. If not, Sarri has some huge holes to fill this week.

Callum Hudson-Odoi showed he has great potential with his display on the left wing against City, and he should take a lot of positives out of the game.

But he is only 17 and clearly he is some way behind Hazard in terms of what he can offer the side and the influence he has on his team-mates.

Like Willian, Hazard is world class now and, if Chelsea are to have a successful season, then Sarri cannot afford to lose either of them.

What complicates matters is that clubs in Spain, Germany, Italy and France can sign players until 31 August, meaning that Hazard and Willian could leave after Chelsea’s chance to replace them has gone.

So that situation is going to hang over Chelsea’s head beyond the start of the season, and it will be draining for everyone.

Giroud offers more than Morata, but does that include goals?

Up front, Alvaro Morata struggled to make an impact at Wembley and he just does not look happy to me.

The obvious alternative is Olivier Giroud, who had a very strong World Cup and played a big part in France’s triumph.

Giroud will be full of confidence so it would not surprise me to see him go straight into the team for the opening Premier League match at Huddersfield on Saturday, even though he is also returning late for pre-season.

But, as we saw in Russia, where he failed to find the net in any of France’s matches, Giroud is not exactly a prolific goalscorer.

Yes, you can see what he brings to a team in terms of a giving them a presence up front and with his link-up play, but scoring is not going to be his main contribution.

The goals have to come from somewhere, though.

Again, if Hazard and Willian stay then I don’t think it is a problem because Giroud will bring them into the game, and they will both score as well as create.

Without them, Sarri will probably be wondering whether his current centre forwards offer enough. Again, he only has until Thursday to decide.

Will Luiz work in Sarri’s four-man defence?

There is also an issue for Sarri to sort out at the back, because if he wants to play with a four-man defence then he has to get his centre-half pairing right.

Against City, he used Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz and, as good a player he is in a three-man defence, I think Luiz struggles when he is playing in a four.

When Chelsea signed him for a second time and won the Premier League under Antonio Conte in 2016-17, Luiz had an outstanding season.

But that was in Conte’s 3-4-3 system, when he was able to bring the ball out of defence and showcase the things he is good at.

Running back towards his own goal is not something he enjoys as much – it just does not suit him, or his skill set.

But the way Chelsea play under Sarri, he is going to have to do plenty of that, and he is going to find it tough.

Sarri has other options of course, with Gary Cahill and Andreas Christensen, and he might feel that, between them, there is the potential to find a partnership that works.

Again, he does not have long to make his mind up.

Chelsea look likely to need a new goalkeeper too

The other problem Sarri has is with his goalkeeper – with Thibaut Courtois’s agent quoted this week as saying that he wants to go to Real.

Sarri said after Sunday’s game that he would be speaking to Courtois about those comments on Monday, adding that he only wants to keep players who are motivated to play for him.

I agree with him – and the same applies to Hazard and Willian too – but losing Courtois at this stage would be a big blow.

Chelsea have bought in Robert Green but he is 38 and clearly seen as a back-up keeper, which is the role Willy Caballero was brought in to do last summer too.

I am not sure Caballero is at the level where they will want to go with him as a number one this season, so that is another huge thing for Sarri to sort out in the next few days.

He will get a substantial fee for Courtois if he does leave, but not much time to spend any money on a replacement.

So Sarri has a lot to sort out and the contrast between his circumstances and those of Pep Guardiola at City, where everyone looks very settled, could not be greater.

City are about to start their third season under Guardiola and it is clear they are a well-oiled machine. They know his philosophy and the way he wants to play; the personnel does not really matter.

That is City’s great strength at the moment, and it is where Sarri will want to be with Chelsea in two years’ time – with a settled squad, who know his system.

It took Pep two years to get to this point, and Sarri needs time too – but his biggest worry must be whether he will get it at Chelsea.

Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck star as second-string Arsenal smash past Southampton

Danny Welbeck scored twice on his overdue first start of the season and former Saint Theo Walcott hit a hat-trick as Arsenal took a measure of revenge for a 4-0 Premier League thrashing by Southampton on this ground last season in a match between two much-changed teams.

But although both managers showed that the FA Cup is not their first priority, Arsene Wenger will be delighted with Welbeck's brace on his first appearance in a starting eleven since surgery on a knee injury sustained in a 2-2 draw away to Manchester City last May.

And he must also have been pleased with the display in the sometimes problematic holding midfield role of 19-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who helped create the opener and also snuffed out attacks as the home side vainly tried to get back into the game in the second half.

Both managers made ten changes to the teams that started their previous matches. Southampton at least had the excuse of a draining midweek EFL Cup semi-final cup tie at Liverpool for their reshuffle. Harry Lewis, whose only previous first-team games for the club had been in the two third-round matches against Norwich City, was in goal again.

But it was soon obvious that Arsenal's shadow side had far too much quality for their Southampton counterparts. Wenger, serving the first match of his touchline ban for pushing fourth official Anthony Taylor during the 2-1 victory over Burnley, watched the match from the directors' box armed with a walkie-talkie for communicating with the bench but had little need give many orders to Steve Bould.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide had a shot blocked then Lucas Perez, found on the left by Welbeck, shot past the far post. Oxlade-Chamberlain drove wide from 22 yards when unchallenged. Arsenal were largely untroubled by anything resembling a threat from Southampton and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 15th minute with a move of real quality.

Holding midfield player Maitland-Niles, 19, making only his fourth first-team start for Arsenal, played the ball forward to Perez, whose flick sent Welbeck clear of the defence to lift the ball over Lewis and in off the crossbar.

It was his first goal since the winner in a 1-0 victory over Norwich on April 30 last year and six minutes later he had his second. Oxlade-Chamberlain's long forward pass found him accelerating away from Jack Stephens, taking the dropping ball down with his right foot and rolling it past Lewis with his right.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg volleyed over the bar as Saints looked for a reply and in the 26th minute David Ospina had to leap to palm away a shot from Shane Long after the Ireland forward had run beyond Arsenal defender Rob Holding.

But Arsenal looked capable of scoring with every attack and Shkodran Mustafi should have made it 3-0 only to glance a header just wide from a free kick on the right.

However, they did not have to wait long for a third goal. In the 35th minute Saints gave the ball away in farcical fashion as Stephens' attempted forward pass hit Hojbjerg and dropped to Welbeck. An exchange of passes with Perez took him clear of defenders again on the left and this time he cut the ball back into the middle, where Walcott got across Sam McQueen to score.

The second half brought little respite for the home side. Hector Bellerin got forward to test Lewis with a firmly-hit shot, and Walcott lost his balance as he rounded the final defender after a promising dribble. Claude Puel put on Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond in an attempt to salvage some respectability but instead it was Arsenal's substitute, Alexis Sanchez, who had the greater impact.

In the 67th minute he delayed his run down the right to stay onside as he collected Oxlade-Chamberlain's pass, ran along the byline and found Walcott, who swept a low shot into the far corner. And Walcott made it 5-0, sidefooting home calmly after Sanchez had broken away down the left.

Wenger was delighted with Welbeck's contribution, and admitted that his goal-scoring return came as a slight surprise.

"I didn't expect him to be at that level," he said. "I knew that he had worked very hard but you never know how much efficiency there could be to transfer that into a competitive game. So it was great to see that he hasn't lost his runs or his finishing and shows as well that when you are was able to channel that frustration at not playing into efficiency, that's a special guy."
