okay so i’m drunk so what i’m about today at may not make any sense but i think i discovered something about bioshock infinite

so un bioshock one jacke is a blank protagonist, similar to characters like harry potter (fuck jkr btw). he’s silent, has no free will, no choice, and no opinions he’s perfect for the player to project themselves into. the thing about infinite is that booker isn’t a blank protagonist. he has a personality and a bunch of dialogue to go along with this. that’s because the blank character for players to project onto isn’t supposed to be booker or elizabeth.

it’s columbia itself.

columbia is significantly less developed than rapture. throughout the 2 games and one book set in rapture, we pretty much get to follow the city throughout its entire lifespan. from creation to fall. but columbia doesn’t get this. columbia is considered by many to be bland. i think this is because they chose to make infinite a character piece on booker and elizabeth, making the setting less important and the characters more important

bioshock 1 is also a character piece, but the character is the city of rapture as a whole.

99% of what people see jack as is their own projections onto the character. their own headcanons for pretty much everything in the guys life. but rapture ? that shits set in stone dude. like there is very little room for interpretation on any of the events of rapture.

i think one reason infinite is regarded as so bad (yes i am currently ignoring a lot of the shitty bits of infinite like the treatment of fitzroy and the wack as shit ending) is because people focus on the bleakness of columbia instead of treating it like the blank character that they project onto. a lot of what i see about columbia online is headcanons, personal ideas, and projections of what players want columbia to be.

in that sense, i think that people that like infinite the best shouldn’t be regarded as incorrect or bad at understanding the game. maybe they just made columbia into something they enjoyed like we all did jack

that being said bioshock 1 is still far superior sorry
