Kung Jin and Kai go to save Kung Lao cw: long post, Kung Jin/Kai, mentioned character ‘death’, mentioned self loathing

“Are you ready for this?”

“No… but I have you with me, so it shouldn’t be too bad,” Kung Jin said, breathing out to steady his nerves. Kai leaned over and kissed his cheek sweetly, making him thumb at his nose briefly, before coughing and breathing out to steel himself some more.

Nerves were to be expected, when they were trying to save Kung Lao from undeath.

But even if he was nervous, even if he was scared, Kung Jin very much wanted to save Kung Lao from his unjust fate. Leaving his cousin like he was… something that had been weighing on Jin’s mind for a while. And sure, Lord Raiden had turned his anger into the right direction and got him off a bad path, but Jin still did not feel right about leaving Lao like that. Not to mention, it sucked being finally accepted by his family for helping beat Shinnok when Kung Lao defeated Shao Kahn and was an outcast now.

Thankfully Kai, his exceptionally kind boyfriend, was up for the rather mad plan to rush to the Netherrealm to grab Kung Lao and pull him free.

“Are you sure about this, we will be bringing back a revenant,” Kai said as they geared up.

“I’m sure. Kung Lao is strong, stronger than anyone gives him credit for. I know he can beat Quan Chi’s blakc magic,” Jin said, checking over his bow. “I mean… he kicked Shao’s ass, how hard can shrugging off some black magic be?”

“I like your optimism!” Kai beamed.

“Thanks, hoping ‘fake it till you make it’ will work,” Jin said.

One teleportation scroll and they found themselves in the sulfuric hellscape that was the Netherrealm. They both coughed as they breathed in the hot and toxic air, before pulling up the face covers that they had thankfully had the foresight to bring with them, before starting their search for Kung Lao while avoiding the bulk of the demons that littered the hellscape. Though stragglers got Kai’s fiery fists through their heads or took a deadly arrow between the eyes. No reason that they could not cut down a few demons since they were there.

There was a worry that Kung Lao would be around Kitana or Liu Kang. Kai and Kung Jin were confident in their skills, but the two of them against a team of those three? They would never stand a chance. Maybe in twenty years if they trained their asses off. They did have a plan if it came to that, and it was a much quicker to ‘fire off’ teleportation scroll and grabbing Kung Lao and running like their asses were on fire. But they hoped that was only in a worst case scenario.

As luck would have it, they actually managed to track down Kung Lao quite a bit away from the palace that apparently Kitana, Liu Kang and the other undead were. He sat on a rock and merely stared out into the distance, the glowing cracks along his skin ebbing and flowing almost peacefully.

“How do you want to proceed?” Kai asked quietly.

“... It weird that I want to see if he’ll come willingly?” Jin asked.

“Not at all, but that could be very risky. I want you to be sure before we do this. But know that I am still with you, regardless,” Kai said.

“... Okay. I’m gonna try and talk to him… wish me luck.”

Kai leaned over and kissed him, soft and sweet, lips lingering before they pulled back so that Kai could smile at him softly.

“You don’t need it.”

Feeling his ears turning a little red, and filled with a burst of confidence, Kung Jin steadied himself before going forth to meet his cousin.

At the sound of his footsteps, Kung Lao’s head moved slightly, and then nonchalantly. Why would he need to worry or fret over someone approaching him from behind? He was Kung Lao, defeater of Shao Kahn, and currently very much dead. It probably helped that being tied to Liu Kang probably had most anything smart enough to avoid him. It also put Kung Jin to ease as he walked a bit, and then stayed a little distance away. 

“Who disturbs me?” Kung Lao asked, voice warped and rasping and echoing.

“... My name is Kung Jin. You are my cousin, Kung Lao,” Kung Jin said, chin out and making direct eye contact with his cousin. There was no need to be afraid, he had this. “You defeated Shao Kahn.”

“... That’s right,” Kung Lao said, taking his bladed hate off the ground and placing it on his head, dragging the edge of the blade between his index finger and thumb, making the metal whine as it came in contact with his strange, undead flesh. “Not that it matters here, or now.”

“I want to bring you home. The Kung line has rejected you for what has happened to you, I want to change that,” Kung Jin said firmly.

“Why?” Kung Lao laughed, standing and turning to face him, smile as cutting as the fangs in his mouth.

“Because I know what it is like, to be rejected for what you are. And your death was unjust. You don’t deserve this, cousin,” Kung Jin said, squaring his shoulders when Kung Lao stepped a bit closer. There was no need to be afraid, he had this, he knew his cousin. “I looked up to you when I was a kid. But sometimes, you need to save your heroes.”

“Save me? How can you save me? As far as anyone knows, Quan Chi is dead--”

“You’re stronger than him,” Jin quickly said. Kung Lao gave pause, hard features softening in surprise. “You’re stronger than anyone knows. You’re stronger than you’re given credit for. If there’s anyone that can come back from this black magic, it’s you, cousin. Because you’re the strongest person I know. Bar none.”

Kung Lao seemed to seriously ponder this for a moment. His glowing eyes searched Jin’s face for a moment, as though to see if Kung Jin was just saying those words to make him feel a certain way. But Kung Jin meant every single one. He had looked up to Kung Lao from a very young age, and to this day, Kung Lao would remain one of the strongest people that Kung Jin knew. And sure, he knew a lot of strong people, but no one had the fortitude, spirit and soul of Kung Lao, and to Kung Jin? That mattered the most.

“They… they won’t accept me,” Kung Lao muttered, looking defeated.

And Kung Jin was thrown back to a stormy day at the Sky Temple. In the dead of night, as rain soaked through his gear and drenched him to the bone. Pouring his heart out of Lord Raiden. Almost brought a smile to his face.

“They only care about what is in your heart, not your checkered past. Trust me, I know.”

“It’s too late for me.”

“It’s never too late, cousin.”

The same words that had convinced him to give up his thief ways and turn his life around and start making of himself broke something inside of Kung Lao, who hung his head for a moment, before lifting it to give Kung Jin an honest and open and vulnerable look. After a moment, he took a hesitant step forward, and then another, and then another when Kung Jin beckoned him, and together, Kung Lao and Kung Jin went to join Kai before they would head back to the Sky Temple.

“Who is this?” Kung Lao asked when they found Kai, hiding a bit away.

“He’s uh… he’s my boyfriend,” Kung Jin said, making Kai pause and then grin nearly ear to ear.

“Huh? Oh... my uh… hello, my name is Kung Lao, and you are…?”

“My name is Kai, it is a pleasure to meet you,” Kai smiled as Kung Jin brought out the scroll that would take them home.

“The pleasure is mine, Kai.”

Kung Jin felt like things were going to be okay.

Event: Black Lips at The Social

The self-labeled "flower-punks," Black Lips, are headed to Orlando to perform tomorrow night, live at the Social. Tickets are $12 advanced and $14 at the door to see the garage rock band, for what is sure to be a highly energetic and grand performance. Opening up for the band is Girls on the Beach, to help ensure that loudness endures throughout the night. Don't miss the Black Lips, Monday, March 25, live at the Social, 8 PM.
