MAMMOTH CARAVAN Perform Single ‘Siege in the Stars’ in The Anvil Sessions
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
As the rapid evolution of technology takes its grip on every aspect of our existence, monitoring our lives, tracking our whereabouts, and yes listening to our conversations, MAMMOTH CARAVAN reminds us of a more primitive time, when the essence of survival was scraping by and worrying about the fundamentals of existence. Yet even in the world of the woolly mammoth, strange things can happen.
On a recent episode of The Doomed & Stoned Show, we speculated what a mammoth in outer space would entail, drawing implications from the cryptic name of Italian band UFOMammut.
Now Little Rock, Arkansas trio Brandon Ringo (harsh vox, bass), Robert Warner (clean singing, guitar, synth), and Khetner Howton (drums) answers our questions with the second single from their upcoming record, 'Frostbitten Galaxy' (2024), which sees this Mammoth Caravan heading toward the stars, as is now the ambition of humankind.
Fontman Ringo had this to reveal about the song:
“Siege in the Stars" is the first song that was written for the new album and it was conceived during a time when we had just changed our lineup and had 10 days to create a setlist of new material. Robert came up with the riffs and I started working on lyrics and once Khetner wrote his drums parts, the song became something massive and special. Lyrically the song represents the bloodthirsty mammoth king’s journey through space on his way to achieve his violent quest.
The atmosphere begins with swarthy bass and guitar swirling about like a bowl of incense, perhaps the gaseous precursor to the massive rocket flames that erupt 35 seconds later. "Siege in the Stars" vessel of fury and mad determination, with massive swing and groove 2:01. It's a motif we're happy to see return as the song progresses, this time accompanied by sparks of psychedelic doom guitar emitting from the ship as it jetsons into cold, black space, with massive deep beats that mete out the distance along the way.
Mammathus clan overtakes mars Now we must fly Martians will die Empires of rust Driven to dust Nothing can stop this siege in the stars
"Siege in the Stars" was captured live for The Anvil Sessions by Holy Anvil Recording Co. in Fayetteville and broadcast by KUAF 91.3, showing us that the band can absolutely deliver on their sound. In an age of AI fakes and phonies, Mammoth Caravan is the real deal.
Look for Mammoth Caravan's 'Frostbitten Galaxy' (2024) emerges October 4th on Blade Setter Records on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital formats (pre-order here). It's a formidable sound and a must for your next playlist with High on Fire, Forming the Void, Ape Vermin, and Black Tusk.

Hi Squiggly! You can totally feel free to decline my headcanon to drabble request, I would totally understand!! But anyways, I have been obsessed with Haikyuu for forever and the new movie has fueled my love for Haikyuu. So my headcanon is that Suga and Yaku (an interesting pair, I know) during the training camps like to make little challenges against each other (they are not as mature as they may seem) and sometimes when they’re evenly matched the challenge will devolve into a tickle fight, in which, once again, an even match.
(Headcanons to Dabbles: OFFICIALLY CLOSED)
OO, this is so GOOD! I don't think I write Suga and Yaku individually enough- let alone together. This was so fun! I hope you like it anon! :D
Let the record show Yaku Morisuke and Sugawara Koshi were the most mature people on their respective teams.
“Race you to the dorms.” Suga slapped the other boy’s shoulder as he booked it, flying past him with glee.
“Son of a- bring it!” Yaku yelled back as he ran after him, catching up to the taller boy and grabbing onto his shirt. “I’m not letting you get a head start over me!”
“Hah! We’ll see about that, shorty!”
However- when they were alone together; they found that maturity flew right out the window.
Stumbling into the lounge, neither boy knew who truly was in the lead, falling through the double doors in a heap of laughter. Yaku was still fisting Suga’s shirt, and the other had tried to grab onto his hair as they collided. “Ehehehe! Who wohohohn?” The setter asked, giggling helplessly when the hand to his back began to wiggle.
“Me! And I’m about to make it so!” Yaku growled, hopping up and sitting on Sugawara’s hips as he carried on scribbling into his shoulder blades. “Admit I got here first, you jerk!”
“Neehehhehever! Iihihiih wohoohohn’t gihihihive ihihihn!” The pale haired teen cackled, kicking his feet and punching the ground. It did nothing to alleviate the ticklish feeling on his spine. “Aheahahhahaha! Noohohohooh fahhahahir, you cahhahan’t juhuhust go and tiihihihckle sohoohomebody!”
“I sure can, and I will. Don’t be such a baby.” Yaku teased, giving Suga’s ribs a couple scratches to make him scrunch up.
That however would be his downfall. The second Suga’s arms got close enough, he pushed off the ground and twisted, sending Yaku tumbling. “Goohohotcha!” He cried, grabbing his leg and squeezing his knee like his life depended on it.
“Aheahhahahhaha! Whohohohoho’s behehehehing uhuuhunfahhahahir nhohoow?” Yaku cackled, flopping about like a fish out of water as his knees and eventually thighs were attacked. He tried and failed several times to grab Suga’s shirt again, but each reach fell short as a new boom of ticklishness shot up his nervous system. “Aheahhahahahah truuhuhhuce! Truuuhuhuhuce!”
“Juice? What- you thirsty?” Suga called back with a grin, distracted. Yaku used his other leg to pull him down and within reach, tickling once more. “Noohohohoho yohoohou jehehehrk!”
“Thahahake thahahaht, you sohohon of a- gheahahaha nohohohoho!”
“Should we…?” Kenma began, turning a confused expression to Kuroo and Hinata as they watched from the stairwell.
“Nah- let them be.” Kuroo shrugged as he turned them back on course, laughing softly as the squeals and cackles following them out. “They’re both far too mature for their own good- especially Yaku. He deserves to cut loose. Now- where’d you say were those vending machines, again?”

If Juliet could have danced the twist with Romeo.
By Mary Teburn, TV times scan from the November 9th 1962 edition published by James Hemery on twitter (x).
As a teenager in Britain today, Shakespeare’s Juliet would probably dance the Twist, love record parties and have lots of clothes. She would say "No" to a drink and a cigarette and would probably make Romeo do the same. At least that's how vivacious, copper-haired actress Jane Asher imagines her Juliet. And she went into the part fairly thoroughly before starting to play it in Romeo and Juliet (Tuesday 3.26).
At 16, she is just two years older than Juliet was in her balcony days. With the common denominator "teenager" Jane set out to build a picture of her 14th-century counterpart. What she was like, and how she would fit into a 20th-century society, were questions that intrigued Jane. In the drawing-room of her London home she recounted a few of her impressions.
"Juliet was an uncomplicated young girl suddenly faced with a complicated romantic tangle too big for her to handle. So she poisoned herself. Today she would either run away to Gretna Green, or come to some solution with her parents," Jane said. Jane thinks that the father-daughter situation in Juliet's home was a ticklish one. And that Dad wasn't a friend and confidant as he usually is today-rather the lord and master of all. She was frightened of him. "Going against her parents' wishes was a terrible thing for Juliet. A social crime," said Jane. "Now they would probably have a round-table conference and discuss the problems. "An onlychild, her upbringing was severe and restricted. "She lived the leisurely and luxurious life of the time as an only child in a rich family.”
Juliet's friendship with her mother though, was probably comparable to the mother-daughter "conspiracy" today. From her mother Juliet learned to love clothes and to dress well. "She would approve of the clothes I wear in the play. They're high-waisted and full flowing, of beautifully embroidered heavy material. "Since she adored l dancing and loved clothes, I can just see her today-an elegant trend-setter and very fashionable," she said. "Juliet, in fact, would fit very well into today's society. She would be a member of the ‘den’ set probably (and here David Weston who plays Romeo, agrees with Jane) and have a wide circle of friends.
She would work too. Jane has even mapped out a career. “She would be a nurse, of course,” she said “You see Juliet was completely unselfish.”
“With her romantic, rather, poetic nature she would probably try her hand at art too.” The trouble it seems with Juliet, was her environment. She lived in a “closed-in” world, where women concerned themselves within the home, and rarely cared for things like politics or science. As Jane puts it, all thinking was “restricted”. So the love of one young girl for the dashing youth of a family quarrelling violently with her own was doomed at the outset. “Class distinction isn’t a barrier to romance today,” she said “they would have found it easier.” David Weston doesn’t think it would have been easier “But it certainly wouldn’t end so drastically…. I hope,” he said.
"It was a case of opposites attract. Juliet, sweet and good and unaffected, and Romeo, a gay young blade-the 'sports car type? —met and fell in love. "It's the same today. . . youth that doesn't think about the consequences until it's too late." The fact that Romeo was 17 influences David's portrayal of the role. "I play it a bit modern because I want Romeo to be as realistic as possible. I want him to appear as he was— a teenager,” he said.
It's a modern thought too, both agree, that teenagers when told not to do something by their parents, will immediately want to do that something.
Though Juliet, as Jane is quick to point out, was more sensitive than Romeo because she found it harder to disobey her parents. Coupled with her loyalty, Jane notes that one of Juliet's most endearing qualities is her dignity. "This grows with the play and we see a gradual transformation in the youthful heroine," she explained. "In the end she isn't a teenager anymore — she's a woman.” But would Romeo’s and Juliet’s romance be as exciting today? Jane wondered. Perhaps they would just meet, fall in love, go steady and marry.

Erica's Basic Info
Name: Erica Paige Mills
Erica's faceclaims for the 90s and now were a lot easier for me to figure out than ones for the 60s and 80s, for obvious reasons, but I do have them, all the same. For the 60s, we have the lovely Pam Grier (the picture is from her 1975 movie Friday Foster) and, while she didn't act in anything big in the 60s, she would have been in the right age range. For the 80s, we have Lark Voorhies (Saved by the Bell). My immediate pick for the 90s was Trina McGee (Boy Meets World) as her overall style and acting, especially in BMW felt very much like Erica. Finally, for present day, we have Andrea Chaparro (Rebelde) - I saw her picture on Pinterest and it just instantly clicked.
Nicknames: Big Dip-Shit (her friends’ term of endearment connected to the freckles on her arm), Frog (she was the highest jumper on the volleyball team) and Dumbass (mostly by Jade, but, like with Jade, their friends call her that as well)
Age: 18
Date of Birth: August 10
Zodiac: Leo
Birthstone: Peridot
Nationality: American and Puerto-Rican
Sexuality: Lesbian
Birthplace: West Side, Manchester, NH
Current Residence: Winnisquam, Tilton, NH
Occupation: Leader of the robotics club, setter of the high school volleyball team, songwriter and guitarist for Blissful Chaos, babysitter of her younger siblings, and cashier at Spencer’s Gifts
Talents/Skills: Gives pretty awesome haircuts, video editing, can memorize practically anything just by seeing it once, and somehow is able to get people to trust them with their secrets, even if they only just met - something she considers both a gift and a curse.
Birth order: Oldest
Siblings: Cora Jane (15) and Elijah Michael (12)
Parents: Michael Douglas Cooper and Sofia Adriana Garcia
Signature:
Height: 5’6”
Race: African-American
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Naturally black, but dyed blue
Glasses or contact lenses: She doesn’t need them, but thinks she’d look cool with glasses. She will wear some pretty crazy-looking contacts for fun events, though
Distinguishing features: Dragon tattoo between her shoulder blades, dagger with vines tattoo on her right arm, and a set of seven freckles on her left bicep that Jade connects with Sharpies to look like the Big Dipper
Mannerisms: Clacking her nails together to the tune of songs, humming theme songs to her favorite shows, and drawing doodles while talking on the phone.
Health: She is allergic to pineapple and is lactose intolerant, but still eats pineapples on pizza and mac-and-cheese like her life depends on it. (Yes, her old one was a typo lol)
Hobbies: Chugging energy drinks, drawing, buying too many vinyls from the record shop, thrifting, and volleyball
Greatest flaw (in their opinion): How expressive she is. She doesn’t always notice it right off the bat, but her expressions give away her thoughts on everything. Even if she’s not entirely vocal on her opinions, you can practically tell what she’s thinking as her face displays it all in high definition. Many times, her friends will have to either elbow her or remind her to “watch her face” to get her to fix it.
Best quality (in their opinion): Her quick thinking. As a setter on the volleyball team, she has to be quick on her feet, have a good grasp of the situation they find themselves in, and be ready to make calls on the fly; Erica thrives in that sort of environment. Whether it’s for volleyball, work, songwriting, or a DND campaign, she loves coming up with plans contributing ideas as it makes her feel a lot smarter than she feels she is.
Biggest fear: Failure of any kind. Oftentimes, she feels as though she has the weight of the world on her shoulders despite that being far from the truth. As the oldest of her siblings, she strives to be the best sister and role model she can for them. As the setter on her team, she allows losses to hit her harder than they do anyone else. As the manager at Spencer’s, she deals with the brunt of every Karen encounter and fights through days of faulty machinery while making sure her coworkers don’t feel guilty for anything going wrong. As the band’s songwriter and guitarist, she feels as though the fault would be hers if the band were to fail in any way or if a song wasn’t a hit. Although she goes through everything with a smile and shrugs off failure like it’s no big deal, on the inside, she’s screaming.
Hogwarts House: Gryffindor
Favorite ice cream: Pistachio
Favorite color: Green
Favorite number: 6, how many months it took for her and Jade to get together
Favorite songs: Memories by Conan Gray, Perfume by Lovejoy, and Boyfriend by Dove Cameron
A place they want to visit: Amsterdam, Netherlands

Haikyuu!! Sentence Starters #1-10
A collection of the Haikyuu sentence starters I've done, compiled for the sake of ease. These are all stand-alone stories.
~~~
1) Lee Noya, Ler Hinata
“Not such a tough little libero now, huh?”
The tease slipped out of Hinata’s mouth with ease as he grinned down at his friend, who was curled up in a giggling ball on the floor.
“S-Shuhuhuhut up, Hinata!” Noya protested, his face bright pink as he tried to hold back the flood that threatened to burst at any moment.
“I think you’re even more ticklish than me, Noya, and that’s saying something!” Hinata giggled along with his upperclassman, easily able to keep up with his squirmy movements. This was way easier than trying to tickle Kageyama. At least in this situation, he had a whole inch of height to his advantage!
Noya squealed and arched his back when the redhead found his lower ribs, crawling up from his sides. “N-Nohohohoho, nononono – Hinata, stahahahahap!”
Hinata beamed. “Why? I like seeing you smile and laugh like this!”
“T-Tickles – it f-frihihihihihicking tickles, Hinatahahahahaha!”
“Oh, really?” Hinata started dragging his fingers up and down the libero’s ribs, thrilled when Noya couldn’t hold back anymore and started squealing with high-pitched laughter. “I would never have guessed.”
“Hinata!” Noya managed before giving up the fight and laying back to take it, shockwave after shockwave of ticklish sensations lighting up his nervous system and making him laugh and squirm involuntarily. But – if he was honest with himself – he really didn’t mind the distraction.
*
2) Lee Noya, Ler Kageyama
“What’s wrong?” Kageyama smirked, holding Noya’s feet in his lap and trailing his fingers lazily up and down the soles. “I thought touch was your love language.”
Noya blushed furiously. “Y-Yeah, but not that kind of touch. Jeez…”
Kageyama replied by scratching his fingernail in the center of the libero’s left sole. “No? Really?”
“S-Stohohohop,” Noya giggled, covering his face with his hands and tugging at his feet half-heartedly.
In the spirit of keeping up the playfulness, Kageyama wrapped one arm around both of Noya’s ankles and held him tighter, scribbling his free hand over both feet at once.
Noya bucked his hips and tried to roll over but quickly wound up on his back again, too weak with laughter to do anything more than protest. “Nohohohohohoho!”
“I don’t know, Yuu, you do seem to be loving this just as much as if I were kissing you.”
“I ahahahahahaham not!”
“You are.” Kageyama grabbed his toes and dug in fiercely. “You should be punished for lying to my face like that.”
Noya tossed his head back and finally started laughing, gripping his stomach as if it would save him somehow. Through screechy giggles he pleaded, “Stohohohohohohop, that s-seheheheheriously tihihihihickles, Kageyama!”
The setter merely chuckled. “I know it does.”
*
3) Lee Hinata, Ler Suga
“No, I’m not giggling!”
Suga grinned. “You sure? It sounds like you are.”
“Well, I’m not!” Hinata insisted indignantly, trying desperately to reach the beetle that was crawling on his lower back, exactly where he couldn’t reach it. Another chuckle escaped him, making him blush. “Get it off of me, Suga! Why are you just standing there?”
“Because it’s cute that a bug is tickling you and you’re giggling,” Suga replied, taking out his phone. “I’ve got to show the guys.”
“H-Hey! Wait!” Hinata whirled to stop him, but his sudden movement caused the beetle to skitter a little further up his back, even more where he couldn’t reach it, and he arched his body and definitely, absolutely giggled. “S-Stohohop! Get it off of mehehehe!”
Suga laughed, holding his phone steady for the sake of his video. “Oh my god, just when I thought you couldn’t get any more fun to be around, Hinata. You’re getting tickled by a beetle.”
“Shut up, Suga!” Hinata felt the heat of his embarrassment on his cheeks, pouting as he crossed his arms, struggling to stay still as the bug crawled up towards his shoulder blades. “P-Please just get it off. Please?”
“All right, all right.” Suga stopped his recording, pocketed his phone, and went to shoo the beetle away. It flew off, unbothered, having no idea the cute scene it had just caused. “There. It’s gone.”
“You’re so mean. Are you really going to show that video?”
“Of course I am.” The silver-haired setter smirked, scribbling his fingers up and down Hinata’s spine quickly, making the redhead shriek and jolt away from him. “How can I resist?”
*
4) Lee Daichi, Ler Suga
“I told you, you didn’t have to try that,” Suga said in exasperation. “Now your arms are all red.”
“But Noya made it look so cool; I wanted to give it a go.” Daichi gave him a look. “You can’t seriously tell me you’ve never wanted to do rolling thunder before.”
Suga pressed his lips together. “Well, since you didn’t want to hear my warning, you’ll have to learn a lesson for not listening to me.”
“Isn’t nearly breaking my arms enough of a lesson learned?” The captain retorted, eyes widening when he saw wiggling fingers approaching him. He took a step back. “Suga, you wouldn’t.”
“I would.”
The setter lunged after his friend, and the two ran around the gym together, sprinting at top speeds to try and catch up to and evade each other. Eventually Suga tricked Daichi into going around the net while he ducked under it, and that finally closed the gap between them.
“No, nohohohoho, wait!” Daichi burst into giggles the instant the silver-haired setter grabbed his sides. “Dohohohohon’t do thahahahat!”
“You deserve it,” Suga shot back, grinning, “for failing to heed my oh-so-sage advice, captain. If you really want to learn rolling thunder, I’m sure Noya would be willing to teach you.”
“G-Gehehehet – get ohohohohoff! Suga!” Daichi twisted and writhed in the setter’s surprisingly strong grip, but he wasn’t going anywhere. “Stohohohohohop!”
Suga only held him closer. “Nope. This is what you get.”
*
5) Lee Daichi, Ler Ennoshita
“Leave me be!” Daichi snapped, turning his back and striding away.
Ennoshita blinked, surprised. He’d been watching the captain a lot more as of late, knowing his fellow second-years were looking to make him Daichi’s replacement once he graduated. He’d of course noticed how hard his upperclassman worked to remain a levelheaded, fair leader to the team – something he wished to do as well. But in the midst of his observations he’d also noticed that Daichi worked himself almost too hard trying to be the perfect example, and when he’d decided to suggest that he take it easy, “leave me be!” was the response he got.
“You don’t have to be a jerk about it,” he muttered. “I’m just trying to help.”
Daichi paused, then let out a sigh and looked back at him. “You’re right. I’m sorry, Ennoshita.”
The second-year smiled and put a hand on his captain’s shoulder. “It’s all right. I know you’re stressed. But that’s exactly why you should take it easy.” Then, inspired by something he’d seen Hinata doing quite a lot lately, he reached out to grab Daichi’s side and squeeze. “To start, you could smile a little more, you know?”
“Ah! W-Whahahahahahat?” Daichi sputtered, helpless against the wide smile that took over his features. He tried to squirm away, but Ennoshita gripped his shoulder even tighter.
“There you go, just like that! Next, you can laugh.” The younger boy grabbed both of his sides then, digging in deep, and Daichi shrieked before doubling over, loud giggles pouring from his mouth.
“Ennoshihihihihihita!”
“That’s my name,” Ennoshita confirmed, grinning, and kept tickling his upperclassman.
*
6) Lee Hinata, Ler Tanaka
“Come on! I see that smile! Give me the smile!”
“Stohohohohohohop! Tanakahahahahahaha!” Hinata squealed, trying his best to double over and fall to the floor. Tanaka wasn’t having it, holding onto him firmly with one arm and digging into his side with the other.
“Come on, Hinata! Stop being so mopey. We all know you’re sad and depressed because Kageyama’s sick today—”
“I’m nohohohohoohohot sahahahahad and deprehehehessed!” Hinata protested, his cheeks flaming red as tomatoes at the callout.
“—but don’t you think he’d want you to be happy and smiling with us instead of pouting all day?”
“I’m nohohohohohohot pouting!”
“Well, not anymore, you’re not!” Tanaka grinned devilishly, scribbling up to Hinata’s underarm. “Tickle, tickle, little lovebird~”
“Stahahahahahahahap!”
“Daichi!” Tanaka turned his head to his upperclassman. “You getting this?”
“Already done,” replied the captain, storing his phone away.
And Kageyama – sick in bed – opened up the video sent to him via text message and smiled, seeing his boyfriend giggling hysterically and already feeling leagues better for it.
*
7) Lee Yamaguchi, Ler Tsukishima
“Stop laughing, this is serious!”
Tsukishima’s harsh words only made Yamaguchi laugh even harder, gripping his stomach as he doubled over. “I-I cahahahahan’t hehelp it…t-thehehehehehey’re r-right  pfffhahahahaha!”
Tsukki growled in irritation. He could barely see Tadashi, having lost his sports glasses and his normal ones stowed away in his duffel bag. “They’re right where? If you see them then tell me where they are! I’m getting impatient.”
Yamaguchi finally regained enough breath to manage, “T-They’re…right there, Tsukki. Around your neck. They just fell, that’s all.”
Blinking, Tsukki looked down and felt around his neck for his spectacles, and sure enough, that’s exactly what had happened. He let out a sigh and put them back on, adjusting them so he could see his friend’s face, pink from laughing and with a wide smile still in place.
“You think this is funny?” Tsukki sauntered up to him. “I’ll give you something to laugh about.”
“Huh? W-Wait!” Tadashi tried getting away, but his blonde friend was taller and stronger and way more intimidating, and it wasn’t long at all before he felt fingers in his ribs, tickling deeply, precisely, drawing out unintentional giggles and squeaks. “Nohohohohoho! I’m sohohohohorry – plehehehehehehease! Tsukkiehehehehehehehe!”
*
8) Lee Tanaka, Ler Daichi
“Dude, you’re way too soft on them,” Daichi said, shaking his head as he watched their two wild first-years sprint out of the gym, no doubt racing to the lockers as though their lives depended on it.
Tanaka shrugged. “Eh, so they’re a little nuts. So was I, when I first started. You were easy on me then.”
“I wasn’t the captain then.”
“And I’m not their captain now. Hopefully ever, dear god.” Tanaka laughed, clapping Daichi on the shoulder. “Relax, dude, they’ll turn out fine. I did, didn’t I?”
Daichi looked at him, and his expression softened. “Yeah, I suppose you did. Still…” He reached for his underclassman’s sides, digging in deep and enjoying the surprised yell he got in return. “I think you could use a lesson yourself, knucklehead.”
“Ack! N-No, ha-hahahahang on a second, I d-dohohon’t need – god, Daichi! Stahahahahap!” Tanaka sputtered and finally broke down into giggles, trying to worm his way out of the older boy’s grip. “Cahahahan’t you lehehehet me d-defehehehend myself for f-fihihihihive seheheheconds?!”
“Mmm…no,” Daichi decided, grinning, tickling even harder. Tanaka finally began to laugh, doubling over and trying to bat the captain’s hands away. “No, I don’t think I can, my friend.”
*
9) Lee Suga, Ler Daichi
“Okay but look, guys – it’s so deep!” Daichi exclaimed, drilling his finger even deeper into Suga’s navel.
Suga was lying on the floor, back arched, head tossed back with throes of laughter, hands pushing weakly at Daichi’s while the captain straddled him, pinning him in place for this ticklish torture.
“STAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAP!!” Suga screamed, laughing louder and harder than anyone on the team had ever heard before. He kicked his legs uselessly, face turning red. “PLEHEHEHEHEASE!!”
“Holy crap, dude,” Tanaka laughed, kneeling down a few paces away to get a better look while the others simply stared on from behind him. “Are you kidding me with that laugh? You sound like a hyena!”
“I DOHOHOHOHOHOHO NOHOHOHOHOHOHOT!!” Suga cried, but he knew he did. He let out a loud squeal, then a snort, and his laughter turned so hysterical it was practically wild.
The others started laughing with him, catching his infectious giggles.
Daichi finally let up after another few moments, scribbling over his belly lightly to bring him gently back down from his tickle-high, and then at last easing up completely. “Your hyena laugh is the best, Suga.”
The silver-haired setter gasped for breath and let out a few residual giggles. “I’m glad you like it, you bully,” he groaned, but he was smiling.
*
10) Lee Tanaka, Ler Hinata
“Don’t poke me!”
Hinata grinned, proceeding to poke Tanaka again anyway. “Why? Does it tickle?”
“You little—!” Tanaka tried to grab him and tickle him first, but Hinata had always had speed on his side, and the redhead had scrambled behind his upperclassman and latched onto him, drilling into his ribs and sides. The second-year let out a yelp, trying to keep from laughing. “Gah! Get off! Hinata, this isn’t funny!”
“I think it’s funny,” Hinata replied, giggling as though to prove his point. He reached up even further into Tanaka’s underarm, and that’s when the upperclassman finally broke and started cackling.
“Nohohohohohoho! You lihihihihihittle jeheheheheheherk!”
“Aw, you’re ticklish, Tanaka!”
“I knohohohohow that! You dohohohohon’t need to tehehehehehell me!”
The redhead beamed, tickling under both arms now. “Tickle, tickle, tickle!”
“Stahahahahap it, you fihihihihihirst-year brahahahahat!”
Hinata laughed. “You sound like Tsukki.”
“I sohohohohohohound nothing lihihihihike that stuck-up – ahahahahahahaha nohohohohoho!” Tanaka tried to wiggle away from Hinata’s fingers along his neck and shoulders but found he was attached quite firmly and couldn’t be shaken off. “Hinata, stahahahahahap already!”
“Okay, fine…” Hinata relented, finally letting him go, grinning. But when Tanaka whirled on him, evil smirk in place, the redhead knew he’d made a mistake in conceding so quickly. He turned on his heel and ran.
“S-Suna—“ “Its Rin.” Suna gave a glare and you nodded and licked your dry lips, “Rin.” You corrected and he gave a nod to continue. He was sitting backwards on a chair and leaned on his arms that were on top of the back rest. He had a butchers knife in his hand. “I-I can’t kill him, I can’t kill an innocent person. I’m sorry please, I’ll do anything. Just let Atsumu go.” You pleaded, your vision became blurry with your tears.
“And why would I wanna do that?” He whispered in your ear and you jumped, frightened almost dropping the knife in your hands and cutting of your naked toes. “Hm? Cat got your tongue?” He asked. “N-no...he didn’t know we were together. He didn’t know we’re in love. He shouldn’t suffer because he’s s-stupid.” You tried to reason.
In reality you’re not in love with him. Well I mean...you were..? He accepted your confession on graduation day of highschool but as years passed, he changed. You now have no friends, no phone, you’re stuck inside the house. He even convinced you to quit your job.
There are times where Suna gives you privileges when you behave for a good while. It’s called grace; doing things for him without expecting things in return, because you love him and you want to please him.
Examples are offering him popcorn when you’re both cuddled on the couch watching a horror movie or making him a bath when he’s had a rough day at work. Even offering sex without him having to hint that he was in the mood.
This past privilage you received was permission to go to the grocery store and the mall alone to buy food and lingerie since Rin’s birthday was today and you wanted to surprise him.
In reality he was following you the whole time.
You wanted to buy some sweat bands for Rin since his hair can get in the way sometimes so you went inside a sports store and bumped into Atsumu. Your old classmate, the boy who was madly in love with you in highschool, but you were too blinded and head over heels for ‘tsundere’ Suna.
You didn’t want to talk to him, you know Rin would find out one way or another. So you just avoided some questions and answered with as few words as possible.
Then Atsumu tried being slick by putting his hand on the wall and leaning in with his face very close to yours, your back was pressed against the wall and you didn’t know what to do.
That was when Suna made a appearance by gripping his shoulder, Atsumu immediately turned and brightened when he saw his old teammate, “Sunarin!” “Tsumu.” He deadpanned. “What are you doing with my wife?” Suna immediately asked and your eyes widened just as big as Atsumu’s. “Holy shit my bad, I didn’t know she was married. I didn’t see a ring so I just tried to shoot my shot. But it didn’t seem like she was interested so that’s good. At least you know you have a beautiful and loyal wife.” Atsumu chuckled awkwardly. “Yeah I do.” Suna hummed and turned his gaze to you, you fake smiled and held your ‘husbands’ hand. “Well we should be going, nice meeting you Atsumu.” You said and tried to leave as fast as possible.
But Suna pulled you back, “How about you join us for dinner?” Your ‘husband’ smiled. “You sure?” Atsumu asked and Suna nodded. “Okay I’m in.” He said and followed you guys to your house.
Dinner was normal, you explained you were a stay at home ‘wife’ which pleased Suna, he’s trained you so well. After dinner Suna wanted to show Atsumu something in the basement or as Rin liked to call it his ‘man cave’ and that’s when you heard a scream. Out of fear for both of them you immediately ran down only to see Atsumu on the floor while Suna beat him with an old baseball bat. With each hit, the bat started turning into a maroon color, you screamed in horror and pulled Suna away by the torso asking what was wrong with him.
Suna turned so quick and pushed you against the wall, his bloody hand wrapped around your throat. “C-can’t brEaTh.” You wheezed as his grip tightened. “Go upstairs and put on the lingerie you bought. Come back down with the video camera.” He said and let go. You fell to the floor and coughed trying to get air. “YOU FUCKER HOW CAN YOU DO THAT TO YOUR WIFE!” Atsumu yelled. “Oh shut up.” Suna rolled his eyes and lifted the bat to break the setters other arm.
With tears streaming down you obeyed and began crawling up the stairs, you walked through the halls of your home, you passed the hallway mirror and saw the bloody hand print on your throat. You began to sob and quickly made your way to the bedroom to change. You already know what happens when Suna is angry and you’re not fast enough. When you successfully put on the lace material you try looking for the video camera but it’s nowhere to be seen. Rin likes recording your punishments, countless videos of you bloody and bruised, fucked into oblivion.
When you’re being a good girl he sadly has no reason to punish you, I mean he’s not a monster, right? So he goes to his man cave and pumps his cock to the sound of your cries, the sounds of your whimpers and moans. When he looks at the screen he sees your tear stained eyes and wishes you’d disobey a little more.
“Ten, nine, eight—“ Suna began counting loudly and you squealed in terror trying to find the video camera. But it was so hard when you were crying. When you finally found it you ran down the hall, tripping along the way, but successfully making it before he reached one.
“-two...wow that was quick.” Suna said with a smirk. “This is my birthday gift?” He asked as his head tilted and took in your delicious figure. You squirmed and fidgeted with your fingers. “Do..do you not like it..?” You asked. “Oh no honey, I love it. You look so beautiful. I’m just amazed at how beautiful you look in them. Come on, give me a twirl.” He motioned with his finger. You turned and wiped your eyes quickly before more tears streamed down.
“Oh baby don’t cry, you’re not in trouble. On the contrary you handled this fucker like a champ.” He chuckled with a praise. He lifted your chin with a finger and you looked into his eyes. “Do you love me?” He asked.
“Yes.” You replied instantly.
“Would you do anything for me?” He asked,
“Yes, of course.”
“So you’d kill for me?”
He said with a smirk and you felt your stomach drop.
You couldn’t do it, Atsumu just looked so horrible. He was bleeding his face was bruised. He was standing with his wrists tied above his head. Suna tied it to one of the beams on top of the basement. It was perfect to hang someone.
“Y/N...just kill me please. Along my pulse. If you cut fast I won’t feel that much pain and I’ll be gone more quickly.” Atsumu instructed. Suna lifted the volleyball and threw it at his face, probably breaking his nose since you heard a crunch. “Don’t talk to her.” He said simply.
“We’re not leaving till he’s dead.” Suna shrugged and fixed the headband on his head that you bought him. You were cold, your feet hurt. The knife was clutched in your two shaking hands. You’ve been in this position for a good few hours, it was already passed midnight. “Come on babe I wanna see that lingerie drip with blood. That’s the best present you could give me.” Suna rested his chin on his arms.
But you stayed frozen, eventually Atsumu knocked out due to exhaustion and Suna grabbed an empty water bottle on the floor to piss in, no way in hell was he leaving you alone with him. He turned his back to you and that’s when you gripped the knife. You yelled running to him with your fist clenching the knife. You stabbed him right in the back but he didn’t flinch.
You gasped and moved your hand to notice it was a fake knife. The fake blade popped back out. How did you not notice? “You’ve been a bad girl. Haven’t you? Trying to kill your husband, the man that loves you.”
“You’re a devil.” You spat with gritted teeth. “I sure am, and I’m dragging you to hell with me.” He said growled and slapped you across the face. You face moved to the side and you held on to your cheek, he then grabbed you by the nape of your neck and turned you so your back hits his bare chest. “Hold this.” He instructs and places the handle of the knife in your palm, “Rin I can’t.” You sobbed. “Shut up.” He gritted and placed his hands over yours. The knife was pointing to Atsumu.
He slowly began pushing you to him but your feet planted onto the floor to stop. Sadly it didn’t do much thanks to Suna’s athletic build and before you knew it you were face to face with Atsumu. His chest heaved up and down quickly, his wrists were purple, fingers obviously broken. “I’m sorry Atsumu.” You apologized as Rin thrusted your arms to stab his stomach, the setters eyes widened at the pain and he saw your tears.
He wanted to scream, he wanted to cry but he bit his lip and tried to stay silent as you pulled the knife out and continued your assault on his body. He just hoped you somehow escape his old teammate and get the justice you deserve. This was the least he could do for the woman he loved.
Black Jack: The Movie (1996)
I’m sure I would've enjoyed Black Jack: The Movie a lot more if I was previously familiar with the character. This film is self-contained but it also doesn’t explain much, leaving me scratching my head in confusion more than once. Instead, the picture strength comes from the enticing story.
Black Jack (voiced by Sean Thornton) is a surgeon operating without a license whose legendary skills come at an exorbitant price. He and his assistant Pinoko (voiced by Julie Kliewer) get wrapped up in a particularly difficult and mysterious case. As humanity hails the beginning of a new age of “super humans” - artists, musicians, and athletes with incredible talents - a strange illness begins affecting the new record-setters.
You look at our protagonist and immediately know this guy must have a crazy story. He lives like a recluse, only takes the craziest, most desperate cases, genuinely cares for the wellbeing of his patients… then demands as much money as possible from them. Where did his “magical hands” come from? What’s with the giant scar on his face? Did he have to perform reconstructive surgery on himself? If you are equally intrigued by these questions, you’re out of luck. Don’t know why Black Jack lives with a little girl who serves as his assistant? Neither do I! Most of the time, I criticize older anime films for having too much dialogue and clunky exposition. Here we have the opposite problem. Could I have done some research ahead of time? Yes but you can watch “Blade” without knowing anything about the character and you’ll never be lost.
As for the plot, it’s got you. Is Black Jack one of these superhumans? Does that explain his magic hands? Will he succumb to the illness? As it turns out, only our hero (who’s not all that good of a guy) can decipher the mystery. It’s a solid puzzle that becomes even more interesting once Black Jack undertakes a risky operation to try and get to the bottom of things. It's telling that although I was often confused, I was never bored and always intrigued.
The animation is pretty good, with the best visuals coming whenever the star athletes, musicians, and artists are on-screen, ill or not. The voice acting is decent. I like the movie overall. Is it going to stick with you? I don't think so because of the ending, which isn't imaginative. You'd watch more adventures with this character but this is a tough sell for those who don't already love anime. I mean the people who love it no matter what genre, tone, director, or quality we're expecting, and what’s the point of reviewing a movie for those kinds of people? They’ll watch it anyway. For everyone else, I say Black Jack: The Movie is ok. Nothing to put any work into obtaining, but if you just happen upon it like I did when a friend dropped off a bunch of VHS tapes at my place, I say give it a try. (On VHS, February 11, 2016)
*slides in* mind telling me about kageyama tobio's quadruplets and yams siblings and the tsukishima's??? please??? i literaly cannot get enough of it your ideas are so pretty kasjlakdjsa (i bet your pretty in real life too )
MIEL,, I AM SCREAMING BC OF YOU,,,
Kageyama quadruplets:
Takara Kageyama (she/her)
she’s the oldest quadruplet and is A LOT like Tobio personality wise
she goes to Shiratorizawa and is in class 1-4! she’s really smart academically
she’s a wing spiker! she’s not a genius player like Tobio but is definitely good in her own right
she’s the same height as Tobio and Takuma (5’11.1”)
honestly the type of sibling that sees you hit one of the other siblings and is like “i do not see” but it’s only because she doesn’t wanna deal with it lol
absolutely does not believe in love at first sight (or love in general; definitely aromantic), also the type of person who believes valentines/white day is a scam
it’s really funny though because she’s very attractive, so she has quite a lot of people confess to her daily, but she shoots them down so harshly 😔 mcyikes
she gets along well with the Ushijima twins because of their similar personalities and interest in volleyball
is best friends with Mitsuhiko Yamaguchi and Tatsuya Goshiki ✌️
she has shoulder length black hair
Takuma Kageyama (he/him)
he’s the second oldest quadruplet and is the polar opposite of Takara and Tobio
he does online school, his illness causes him to be in the hospital too often so he decided online school would be the best choice
he also can’t play volleyball, which doesn’t bother him, he never was into sports anyways
the annoying sibling who does shit like “i’m not touching you” while clearly poking your arm
he’s a bit hesitant about people outside of his family, because everyone tends to leave him behind because of his illness
the times that he’s NOT in the hospital are the most exciting days ever to him, he’ll go to the park and watch the birds, or he’ll chill behind the desk of Miwa’s salon and play games on his phone
he’s very kind but can be loud sometimes, he has a slight volume control problem
he has shoulder blade length black hair that’s usually kept in a messy bun
Tsukiko Kageyama (she/her)
the third quadruplet and arguably the coldest personality wise
she lives with their cousins in Tokyo and goes to Nekoma, she’s in class 1-6
she’s definitely the smartest of the quadruplets as well as the most organized
she’s also the shortest of the quadruplets, while the other three are all 5’11.1”, she’s barely 5’0” and is very salty about it
she’s a genius player like Tobio and is one badass libero, it’s both fascinating and terrifying to watch her play
also gets a lot of confessions daily and also turns them down, but is lot crueler about it
she and Tobio argue the most out of ALL of the Kageyama siblings, they just can’t stand each other
she’s friends with the Nekoma vbc, they all constantly try to get her to become the manager but she would rather be playing volleyball than just watching people play
she has short, ear length black hair with an undercut
Yamaguchi siblings:
Maisha Yamaguchi (she/her)
Tadashi and Mitsuhiko’s big sister!! she’s 19!
she’s so fucking tall, she’s 6’2.4” and loves wearing platform shoes or high heels
bi icon™️
she goes to university in Kyoto and plays for their school team; she’s a wing spiker and the ace
she’s really sweet and outgoing, very extroverted and isn’t afraid to speak her mind about any topic
she’s a famous singer on youtube! she writes her own songs but she’ll occasionally do a cover if it’s requested a lot; her youtube persona is named “Mipsy”
she loves both of her little brothers so much, if she can, she’ll try to watch their volleyball matches in person but if not she’ll ask one of her friends back in Miyagi to record it and send it to her
she’s great friends with Saeko Tanaka, Akiteru Tsukishima, Tenma Udai, and Kiyoshi Hinata
in high school, she dated Saeko for a while, but they both decided to break up before Saeko graduated
she currently has a huge crush on Akiteru but is too afraid to confess
she has wavy, shoulder length green hair with an ahoge that sticks straight up
Mitsuhiko Yamaguchi (he/him)
Tadashi’s twin brother
he’s a lot more introverted than Tadashi but it’s more from not wanting to talk to people rather than shyness
he’s the same height as Tadashi (5’10.7”) and has a lot of freckles but that’s where most of the similarities stop
he has long green hair that’s usually kept in a ponytail or a bun, but it reaches his hips when it’s down; he also has an ahoge
also, his eyes are dark grey rather than brown
he goes to Shiratorizawa and is in class 1-5
he honestly doesn’t like Kei because of his attitude but doesn’t want to tell Tadashi who he can and can’t be friends with
he’s a libero god and is #9 on Shiratorizawa
he greatly admires Shirabu and Yamagata but does his best to keep this a secret from them
he hangs out with Tendō a lot but refuses to admit that he’s fond of him, Tendō has his suspicions but has not confirmed or denied them yet
people also tried bullying him when he was younger, but he fought back against them and sent them home crying
does not take shit from anyone, which is probably why Tendō hangs around him so much; he’s entertaining and fun to tease and watch him fire back
he sticks up for Tendō a lot, but never in front of him, he waits until the redhead goes to leave and do something else before going to find the poor fool who decided to fuck with his favorite senpai
Tsukishima siblings:
Hikaru Tsukishima (he/him)
the second oldest Tsukishima brother, he’s 18 and 6’1”
he goes to Karasuno and is in class 3-4
he’s very cold and reserved, he doesn’t feel emotions normally and has a hard time figuring them out
very emotionally unavailable
every confession he’s given has been thrown away immediately, he does not care if it hurts their feelings or not he doesn’t want it
he went through a lot during elementary and middle school, which is the cause of his cold personality
he doesn’t have a lot of friends and wants to keep it that way
he doesn’t play volleyball and actually hates the sport with a burning passion
he does play the violin and the piano, it helps soothe him
Akiteru is the only brother who has seen him have a mental breakdown, he tries to hide it from the younger brothers as much as possible
he has short, curly black hair and blue eyes
Kira Tsukishima (he/him)
Kei’s twin brother!
he’s at Karasuno in class 1-1
he’s such a sweetheart to everyone and has a lot of friends
he has ADHD and dyslexia, which makes him very frustrated but he tries his best to power through both
he’s HUGE, the tallest Tsukishima brother at 6’6.7”
calls everyone pet names, there is no escape
he’s a wing spiker and #15 on team Karasuno
it’s best not to cross him, he’s the scariest mf ever when pissed off
he’s essentially a huge golden retriever stuck in a huge human body
loves skinship with his friends, if you see him nuzzling one of his friends lovingly that’s his business
he’s absolutely infatuated with Kenma and Akaashi... and Tobio... and pretty much any setter ever
he has short, slightly curly blond hair
#asks#miel-meraki#haikyuu!!#hq#haikyuu!! sibling au#hq sibling au#sibling au#this took me 50 years to write lmao#damn tho#me 🤝 hikaru: being emotionally unavailable#for legal reasons this is a joke
HUGE list of info we’ve learned from the After The Fall Novel
(Courtesy of NeoVelociraptorDelta from RWBY wiki for making this list. You’re incredible!) SPOILERS AHEAD, DON’T CLICK IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW
Grimm
Dromedon are camel like Grimm that can spit venom (p.150). Jackalopes are huge four-legged beasts with black fur, branching red and white antlers, and powerful hind legs (p.150). Ziraphs are three headed Grimm that resemble a giraffe. Their bodies are covered in red spots that bear resemblances to a leopard, and each head has two horns. The Ziraph is described as five stories tall, and has razor-like plates on their (four) legs (p.151). Ravagers are small bat-like Grimm, that are described as dark and leathery, and are uglier than Nevermores (p.69). A visual will be provided by RWBY Amity Arena soon, if datamines are to be believed. A Blind Worm is an enormous worm-like Grimm with a singular red eye. These Worms are easily as big as Flatback Sliders, but are built to be far faster when traveling in sands. Their defenses include hooks and pitons for teeth and acidic blood (p.263). King Taijitu are also native to Vacuo
Carmine Esclados and Bertilak Celadon Carmine and Bertilak are veteran Huntsmen who work for an unknown employer that has hired them to traffic people with powerful Semblances for an unknown motive. In After the Fall, the duo targets Gus and Edward Caspian, having met them in Vale and followed them to the Felspar settlement Vacuo (p.28). They are detained and arrested by team CFVY. Both Carmine and Bertilak are originally from Shade Academy (p.32). Bertilak Celadon Bertilak is a tall, broad, and muscular man with a green mohawk and matching goatee. He sports a brown, hooded cloak, a green chestplate, and a black tunic. Bertilak has a long scar along his right forearm, and uses a large chained mace (p.31). He is 6’6” (p.215). He is racist towards Faunus. He apparently barely graduated from the Academy (p.31), and is considered an ass, as Fox put (p.108). Celadon’s Semblance is generating heat, he can use it to form walls of sand and to cause enemies to be exhausted (p.137). Bertalik faces off against Fox Alistair and Edward Caspian in a sandstorm, and is subsequently defeated. His weapon is destroyed. Carmine Esclados Carmine hails from the Kingdom of Atlas, though she claims she chose to study in Shade Academy due to a disdain towards Atlas Academy’s uniforms (p.35). Her clothes are from Mistral (p.33). Carmine’s Semblance is Telekinesis, which she frequently uses to create localized weather patterns and to manipulate her weapons (p.254). Additionally, Carmine has used her Semblance to dig tunnels through sand in order to escape peril. Carmine is stated to have less mastery over her Semblance than Glynda Goodwitch. She is defeated by Yatsuhashi Daichi, Velvet Scarlatina, and Coco Adel.
Wildlife Vacuan wildlife includes, but is not limited to: Geckos Mole crabs; massive crab-like creatures that move in herds and bury themselves in the sand. Their blood is described as a clear liquid, and their bodies contain water that is almost black in color. Mole crabs are considered a delicacy in Vacuo, and are very rarely killed due to how dangerous they are. Flatback sliders; giant turtles that average at 100ft of height and swim through Vacuan deserts. Sliders have terrible vision, and are considered a sign of good luck when spotted. They are not Grimm (p.204). Food in Remnant Mistral is the kingdom with the most spices in all of Remnant (p.36). Vacuan food includes: Cactus leaves, coffee, crab burgers, crab steak, crab cake, crab rangoon, fried crevice worms, cave beetles (toasted), desert lotus tea, cactus tea, gecko cake (p.30), bat stew, ale, flatbread (p.37), breadfruit (p.79) Sand is jokingly referred to as the “local spice” of Vacuo as it can’t be fully removed when preparing food. Shade Academy Notes Graduates: Carmine Esclados and Bertalik Celadon Headmaster: Theodore (p.33) Professor: Rumpole (p.19)
Beacon Academy Notes Initiation For CFVY’s initiation, the characters were hurled into the Emerald Forest much like in Volume 1. The Relics they were assigned to obtain were small stone tablets with playing card symbols etched onto them. Coco obtained the Joker Fox took the King of Hearts Velvet took the Queen of Hearts All upperclassmen watch the initiation live from Beacon, and judge newcomers based on their performances. Professors and Classes Ann Greene - Stealth and Security (p.80) Thumbelina Peach - Plant Science (p.269) Peter Port - Military Strategy (p.269) Harold Mulberry - Weapon Crafting and Upkeep (p.269) Bartholomew Oobleck - Legends of Remnant (p.269) Glynda Goodwitch - Combat Training (p.269) Ozpin does not teach any classes. The clockwork in Oz’s office is meant to symbolize how rules are crucial to keep things moving (at least to some extent; p.245) Standard Schedule at Beacon: 7:30am - Breakfast 8am - class 9:45am - class 11:15am - class 12:30pm - lunch 1:30pm - class 2:15pm - class 4pm - class 5pm - self-directed sparring 6pm - dinner Beacon sends students on missions more often than other Academies, and gives students more one on one time with professionals (p.270)
Pharos Academy Pharos is a combat school in Vale. Coco and Velvet attended Pharos. They knew of each other but weren’t friends then. Coco developed a reputation for being a heartbreaker and record setter. Vega Bleu is a friend of Velvet who also went to Pharos, but chose to go to Atlas. He wields a pair of arm-mounted grappling hooks (p.52)
Vacuo Notes Popular Vacuan tourist gift shop t-shirts include: “Vacuo: The Wrong Place at the Wrong Time” and “A Terrible Place to Visit, but You Wouldn’t Want to Live Here” (p.1) Vacuan fashion: simple, light-colored tunics and linen cloaks/head coverings (p.15) Vacuo has a survival of the fittest lifestyle, and strength/survivability makes you well liked (p.15) Vacuan settlements/tribes include: Tuff, destroyed by Grimm Oscuro Coquina Kenyte (partially destroyed by a giant sinkhole) Schist (destroyed by Grimm) Feldspar It’s built out of several tents, trucks/vans, and adobe homes without and defenses Has a support CCT tower Vacuan deserts are windy, thus making it extremely hard to track people in the sandy environment (p.23) Aloe is a common sunscreen in Vacuo The saying ‘I’ll take a rain check’ means the same as ‘when pigs fly’ in Vacuo Vacuan terms: Misery’s Kiss (sunstroke), Lasting Regret (food poisoning), Sudden Demise (giant sinkholes; p. 78).
Edward and August ‘Gus’ Caspian Edward is a slender, old man at 71 years of age with silver hair tied into a ponytail and a stubble. He is a former Huntsman, which is surprising because most Huntsmen don’t live long. His weapon is a small buckler shield with a metal blade (p.81) and a gun function (p.179). Edward’s Semblance is blocking other people’s Semblances. Gus has the Semblance of amplifying emotions, only he can’t control it. He kept this a secret from others (p.130). He has no interest in being a Huntsman, unlike his grandfather, Edward. August is roughly eleven or twelve. The Caspians were targeted by Carmine, Bertalik, and their unknown boss because of their powerful Semblances.
CFVY and Other Teams CFVY and RWBY became friends shortly after the latter team was formed. Ruby seems to be close to Coco, Velvet and Fox. Both teams respect each other due to their respective hotshot reputations. The two teams lost touch after the Fall of Beacon. CFVY and Neptune/Sun were friends. They meet each other in the Epilogue of the book in the settlement of Coquina, where Sun informs the team about the events at the Battle of Haven, meaning After the Fall takes place right at the start of Volume 6. Velvet notes that Sun doesn’t seem like he wants to stay in Shade for long.
The Battle and Fall of Beacon Velvet observed team ABRN easily defeat a Death Stalker during the Battle of Beacon Roy Stallion was killed after being carried off by a Nevermore, the rest of team BRNZ is missing, presumed to be dead. Glynda set up her office in a library after the Fall of Beacon, and is operating the reconstruction of Vale. Team CFVY does not trust the Kingdom of Atlas following the Fall. Beringels were present at the Fall of Beacon.
Team CFVY’s Missions CFVY’s mission in the present day was to defend the settlement of Gossan due to a Grimm outbreak after they received a distress call. They found the settlement had been destroyed, and aided the survivors in reaching the settlement of Feldspar. After Feldspar was invaded by Grimm, the team successfully lead the nomads to Coquina without any casualties. They uncovered Carmine and Bertalik’s plan to traffic people, and arrested the two. CFVY’s Mt. Glenn mission was considered an outright failure. The team was sent to a small settlement called Lower Cairn near Mt. Glenn due to a distress call. There, they found the settlement was outright flattened, which was incredibly outside the Grimm’s MO. CFVY found a family of six hiding in a cave near the ruins, and attempted to rescue them. To their horror, the father was killed by an Ursa, and the rest of the family fled back to the cave. The cave was then flattened by a Goliath that appeared, causing CFVY to retreat. The mission lasted ten days and was supervised by Professor Port, CFVY believes Ozpin overestimated their team. In V2, Velvet lies to team RWBY about their mission, partially due to shock and in part to not frighten the first years, given they were leaving off on their own missions shortly.
Ada Ada, or an “Accessibility Dialogue Assistant” is an earbud device intended to aid people with disabilities. It is designed to send pulses to distinguish the nearby environment, and is activated through voice control (p.46). Ada has a compass function(p. 176), as well as a battle mode called the Cyrano Protocol, which identifies weapons and weaknesses. The entire Ada system adapts to fit the user over time (p.178).
Miscellaneous Pig snouts are a confirmed Faunus trait (p.30) Pumpkin Pete is also a Looney Tunes-esque cartoon in addition to the cereal brand (p.12) Curry Up is one of the restaurants at Vale (p.239) Ruby made her V1 outfit herself with roughly 20 Lien (p.112) Coco and Oz once had a talk much like Ruby and Oz did in V1 (p. 117) Fox and Yatsuhashi confronted Weiss about her attitude in V1, shortly after team RWBY was formed (p. 121) More books in Remnant: The Boy Who Fell from the Sky (p.122), My Sweet Samurai, and Hidden Remnant (p.161). ‘Catnap’ is an offensive term when talking about cat Faunus (p.161).
Fox Alistair Fox’s Semblance is that of telepathy. He can send message to people’s minds to convey his thoughts, and he can sense when people are close by. Fox’s Semblance is more precise if people are close by. When using it, other people feel as though they are being watched by something. He is originally from the Vacuan tribe of Kenyte, where he was considered a frail boy by his parents and peers. His parents were killed when a part of the settlement was destroyed in a sinkhole, resulting in him being taken care of by the tribe in a communal fashion. Fox was trained to fight by his honorary uncle, Copper, as he was the one person who didn’t view Alistair as frail. Copper was eventually killed by the tribe for training him as a punishment. Because of this, Fox decided to turn to Vale with the goal of protecting others who couldn’t protect themselves. Fox’s weapons are called Sharp Retribution.
Yatsuhashi Daichi Yatsuhashi’s Semblance allows him to wipe other people’s memories when he touches them. He can permanently wipe “easy memories,” which are trivial in nature, and temporarily wipe important memories, which return on an equal basis as to how they were wiped (so, if he were to wipe a day, then the person regains the memory the next day). Yatsu uses the Semblance sparingly, only wiping seconds at a time. Yatsuhashi was born in the city of Mistral, where he lived with his parents, grandfather, and his sister, Hiyoko. At the age of eight, he discovered his Semblance, and being a problem child, decided to use it to his advantage. However, this took a turn when, in a fit of jealousy, he wiped his mother’s memory of his sister for a day. Yatsuhashi was traumatized by this, and took care of Hiyoko while he waited for his mother’s memory to return. Once they did, he came clean to his parents about discovering his Semblance, to which his parents told him to never use the Semblance again. However, his grandfather suggested that he went to Beacon to master it to use his ability for good. Yatsu’s greatsword is called Fulcrum.
Coco Adel Coco’s Semblance, simply called Hype, allows her to use her Aura to increase the effects and power of Dust. She uses this to power the effect of her gatling gun’s bullets, thus explaining her power level in Volume 2. Additionally, Fox notes Coco has a large amount of Aura. She is native to Vale, and studied in Pharos, having developed a reputation as a heartbreaker and a record setter. Coco notes Ozpin reminds her of her younger brother. She admires Glynda’s leadership and tries to replicate that when talking to her team and when encouraging Ruby Rose. She designed her gatling gun, Gianduja, herself.
Velvet Scarlatina Velvet’s Semblance is Photographic Memory, it allows her to easily learn skills that would otherwise take years to master. Velvet, like Coco, is from Vale and studied in Pharos. At her time in the school, tormentors from Mistral frequently bullied her, causing Velvet to gain a deep seeded hatred for the Kingdom. She also dislikes Vacuo, mainly because it’s simply not as comfortable as Vale was to her. Velvet is sassy when with her team in comparison to her usual shyness around others. Her camera is called Anesidora.
Slate Slate is an old woman with spiky grey hair and what is described as a leathery face. She is the leader of Gossan nomadic tribe, and the former mayor of Tuff (where the tribe was originally settled), which had recently been destroyed by a Grimm outbreak (p.14). Slate is highly respected as a leader, gaining the trust of the entire nomadic tribe and team CFVY.
The case of the demon’s den #3
If you can’t find part 1and 2, feel free to shoot me a message!
Words: 2432
Editing: nope
Ships: JOJOBUTTONS CHAPTER WHOO, eventual Javid, eventual Spromeo, eventual Newsbians, Blush
Things you should know: Buttons, Smalls and Sniper are girls, JoJo is nonbinary, Race, Romeo, Jack and Smalls are adopted siblings. There are horror elements in this fic.
Chapter 3: The only logical thing to do in a haunted house, is to watch Barbie movies.
By Sunday noon, the demon’s den living room had traces of every newsie all over it and they decide to throw a modest housewarming party. Henry and Buttons have taken over the kitchen and are baking cookies, Finch and Sniper are outside, trying to teach Smalls how to use a slingshot. It’s not going well, but at least they aren’t inside with those slingshots. A bunch of people are lazing around on the couch and on chairs. The unfortunate ones have to sit on the floor. Race and Albert are trying to make the DVD-player work and it seems like they’re succeeding. Romeo and Specs are having a heated discussion over which Barbie movie they should watch.
“Princess and the Pauper!” Romeo yells and hits Specs with a pillow he found somewhere. “Three Musketeers!” Specs shrieks back and wrestles with Romeo. Jack silently inserts Barbie & the Diamond Castle before either of them notices it and when the movie starts to play, they break up their fight to glare at the tv. “Who is the fool that wants to die?” Romeo growls and Specs glares too. Wisely, Jack stays silent and sits down in front of the couch. Grumbling, Specs and Romeo sit down too and angrily snack on the potato chips that Mush brought along.
Speaking of Mush, Jack is fairly sure that he and Blink are making out somewhere. Ah well, who cares.
Halfway the movie, the two of them return and Blink drapes himself across all the people who are sitting on the couch and steals a cookie from Elmer. “This is cosy.” The sentence is barely understandable through the cookie in his mouth and Mush gives him a disgusted look. “Really Blink? I’ve got to kiss that mouth.” With his mouth still full of cookies, Blink grins. “You’ve got to do exactly nothing.” “Okay then”, Mush says and leaves for the kitchen. Promptly, Blink clambers from the mountain of people he had placed himself on and trails after Mush. “Babe, come back!”
“Whipped”, Specs whispers as soon as Blink is out of earshot and Tommy Boy snorts. “Like you are any better.” Specs turns to him with a confused look on his face. “What’s that supposed to mean? I don’t have a boyfriend. I wish I had a boyfriend. I’m lonely.” Romeo reaches up to pat his head. “Same bro.” Their friends watch the scene, but decide not to comment on it. Eventually they’ll figure it out. Maybe. Who knows. Probably not.
“You know what this evening-“ “It’s afternoon” “Shut up Jack. Do you know what this evening needs?” Buttons asks, when she gently pushes JoJo out of their chair and claims it for herself. “Candles!” JoJo, who’s now on the floor, gives her a smile. “I can get you those, wait here for a minute.” After JoJo left the room, Tommy Boy smirks. “Whipped nr.2”, he announces and Buttons kicks him for it. “Shut up, dickwad.”
Within record time, JoJo is back with some candles. “The first time we went here, I discovered these”, they inform Buttons. “Now get off my chair and enjoy your candles.” Childishly she refuses to return their chair. “Nope it’s mine now. Nothing you can do about it.” They give her a flat look before picking her up and lifting her high above their head. “You weight literally nothing”, they remark before sitting down on the chair and placing Buttons on their lap. “There we go, place for two.”
Nothing out of place happens, and in the late afternoon, before the sun begins to set, they say goodbye to each other and plan to meet up here the next Saturday with the whole group. Some people want to come back earlier in the week and Jack advises them to go in groups. “In case you fall down the stairs”, he adds as a joke, but it falls flat as all of them pointedly stare at his right leg, where is his pants are hiding a massive bruise. Then their gazes travel up to his forehead, where a faint line indicates the place where he headbutted a step. “Just be careful y’all.”
Later that night, when JoJo is staring at their ceiling, trying to fall asleep, they suddenly come to a conclusion. They recall grabbing the candles, and dropping them again because they had been hot. They are fairly certain that none of the newsies had gone upstairs, which means that someone else must’ve lit those candles. The sound of their phone alerts them of a new message in their group chat. ‘Anybody want to go to the DD (demon’s den) w/me after school tomorrow? I need to fill up our snack cabinets.’
Immediately they want to tell Buttons not to go, but then they remember that Blink and Mush had been gone for a suspiciously long time during the movie. Also, aren’t candles supposed to be a mood setter or something? Relieved that they simply have a very active imagination, they shoot a message back. ‘Sure, count me in.’
-
“I’m going to fucking kill Denton” rages Buttons as she enters the ‘DD’. “Who deducts points for grammar mistakes?” “Well, he is our English teacher”, JoJo points out and they get a glare in return. They raise their hands in surrender. “Don’t mind me stating the facts.” Grumbling, she admits that they are sort of right. “I’m craving some cookies and this house has a working oven. Want to help?” Despite never having baked cookies before, JoJo quickly agrees.
“Jorgelino Josephino De La Guerra” The use of their full name shouldn’t get to them like this, but JoJo’s heart skips a beat and their breathing stutters for a minute. “Yeah?” they answer when they’re sure that their voice isn’t going to sound like that of a six year old. “What in God’s name are you doing?” Buttons’ voice is filled with amusement and JoJo sticks out their tongue. “I’m making cookies, Yasmin Davenport”, he retorts and she tries to keep herself from cracking up. “I see”, she says and eyes their clothes, which were black half an hour ago. Now they are streaked with flour.
They even managed to get some of the stuff in their hair. “Bow down, skyscraper. There’s flour in your hair.” They bow down and as Buttons reaches for their hair, JoJo places their arms around her legs and hauls her up. “There we go”, they giggle as they set a shrieking Buttons on the kitchen counter. “That’s better for my back.” “What are you? An eighty year old?” “Slowly getting there.”
Sitting on the kitchen counter, Buttons is finally taller than JoJo and as she looks down at their messy hair and lazy grin and feels the warmth of their hands on her thighs, she leans down. JoJo meets her halfway and for a few seconds it’s merely their lips touching. Then JoJo growls and pulls her close, while she tangles her hands into their hair and gives an experimental tug. That, combined with her softly tugging on their bottom lip, draws an obscene sound from their lips and Buttons groans in return.
“Fuck JoJo”, she breathes and kisses their neck. “I’ve been wanting this since sixth grade”, she pants. “Remember when someone pulled the arm of my favourite teddy bear off and you tried to stitch it back? Your stitching was awful, but damn if it wasn’t sweet.” She presses another bruising kiss onto their neck and JoJo keens. When their eyes cross, JoJo brings out: “Me since eighth.” They gently rub circles into Buttons’ thighs and she sighs with pleasure. “That fucking teacher wouldn’t stop misgendering me no matter how much I asked him to stop and you plainly started screeching whenever he opened his mouth. That’s when I first thought: yup, she’s the one.”
While they are busy staring at each other, they hear the sound of a door opening. Quickly they spring apart and Buttons calls out: “Hey! Who’s there?” When she gets no answer, she and JoJo trade glances. “Wanna go look?” she asks and they nod. “Wait, let me take this along.” Out of their backpack they grab a 12 inch cross. “JoJo, I’m 90% sure that ghosts don’t exist.” JoJo grins and mischief sparkles in their eyes as they reveal a blade hidden within the cross. “This one ain’t for ghosts.” With an aghast expression on her face she eyes the cross-dagger in JoJo’s hand. “Why do you have such a thing? Where do you even get something like that? Whatever, just don’t give one to Race. Ever.” Their grin widens. “Bold of you to assume that I haven’t given him one yet.”
Nothing seems out of the ordinary as they wander around the house and every door they come across is closed. Even the doors upstairs aren’t open. Confused, JoJo enters the attic bedroom and plops down on the bed. As Buttons sits down next to them, the door locks itself. Immediately both of them rush to the door and try to open it in vain. “What the fuck”, Buttons whispers as she peers through the keyhole. “There’s no key in here, but we both heard a key and this fucking door won’t open. There’s nobody in the hallway and we heard no one. What the shit is going on?”
Before JoJo can answer, a high and feminine scream rings through the house. In a moment of clarity, JoJo pulls out their phone and calls the first person in his contact list. For a moment they fear that nothing’s going to happen, but then they hear that the call is going through and after three rings, Finch picks up. “Sup JoJo.”
“HeyButtonsandImightbedyingsoonpleasehelpus” They spit the words out at a nearly impossible pace and Finch is silent for a minute. “What? Speak slower buddy.”
“We’re in the demon’s den and we’re locked into the room. There should be nobody here except us, but we just heard someone scream. Please help us.”
“Shit, I’m coming. Where exactly are you guys?” “We’re in the attic bedr-“ Once again, a scream is heard throughout the house and judging by the sharp intake of his breath, Finch had heard it too. “Fuck, I hope you guys have something to defend yourselves with. I’m on my way.” Finch hangs up and JoJo clutches their dagger-cross tighter.
The minutes go by slowly and both of them sit on the bed in silence. Their hands are intertwined and JoJo runs their thumb over the back of Buttons’ hand in what they hope is a comforting manner. A smile graces Buttons lips as she gives them a brief kiss on the tip of their nose. “You’re a sweetheart” They want to tell her the same thing and about a million things more, but the words get stuck in their throat and all they can do is blush and press little kisses all over Buttons’ face.
“Would’ya look at that”, Finch comments as he enters the room, a grin plastered on his stupid face. It’s hard to tell whether JoJo or Buttons is glaring more at him, but he ignores it.
“This one” he raps his knuckles against the door “was open. If you weren’t busy” he waggles his eyebrows at that part and continues “maybe you would’ve noticed. Also, you guys left the tv on and some horror movie was playing. I shut it off.”
From downstairs, the sound of voices travel up and as Buttons and JoJo tense up, Finch quickly waves away their fears. “That’s just the guys. I called everybody and they all wanted to be involved in the JoButtons rescue mission.” The tension drains out of their shoulders and Buttons grabs JoJo’s hand and speed walks out of the room. For some reason, JoJo looks back and their eyes land on a mirror. They can’t make out a face, or even a person but when they close their eyes, hauntingly blue eyes are imprinted in their mind.
As JoJo goes down the stairs, they see something move out of the corner of their eye and turn to look at it. Their own image stares back at them from a mirror, but the view is distorted, like in one of those houses of mirrors at the carnival. As they stand still to watch their comically warped reflection, it changes. Its amused smile moulds itself into an unnaturally wide grin and when it opens its mouth, it reveals two rows of teeth on both the upper- and lower side of it’s mouth. The image unravels its long, sharp tongue and licks the second row of teeth in the upper side of its mouth. Completely caught in a mix between horror and morbid fascination, JoJo keeps watching until Finch’s voice breaks them out of their trance.
“What’cha looking at JoJo?” When Finch looks at the mirror, JoJo’s reflection has turned back to normal. “That’s a pretty funny thing, but if we keep standing on these stairs, the others will worry. Let’s go downstairs.” JoJo complies to Finch’s request, but as they turn their back to the mirror, they feel a gaze following them. It feels awfully wrong and merely thinking about it makes them nauseous. “JoJo”, a mangled voice garbles and judging by their lack of a reaction neither Finch nor Buttons heard it. JoJo pretends they don’t either and they have never felt more relieved than when they set a foot into the living room and get surrounded by a heap of newsies.
The first person who comes into view is Romeo. He runs towards them, opens his arms for a hug, sees the cross-dagger in JoJo’s hand and immediately retreats. “Excuse my wording, but what the fuck is that?” From the couch, Race holds up a necklace with a cross and clicks it open. “Look Romeo, JoJo gave me one too!” Befuddled, Buttons rakes a hand through her hair. “I thought you were kidding when you said that Race had one too. Why did you think that was a good idea?” They smile sheepishly at her. “Sorry babe, but since Albert handled his responsibly, I thought Race would be able to do the same.”
As Jack shouts: “Babe?” in utter confusion, Buttons looks like she’s on the brink of a breakdown. “Albert has a dagger-cross too? JoJo you can’t do that.”
“That’s right”, a new voice speaks up and the room falls silent. All of them stare at the new boy leaning against the doorframe with Hello Kitty socks on his feet, as he casually eats the chocolate that was supposed to go into JoJo and Buttons’ cookies. “No crosses”, he continues. “This is a nice and respectable Jewish household.”
Album & EP Recommendations
Album of the Week: A Way Forward by Nation of Language
Without a doubt one of the highlights of my year has been discovering the music community over on Twitter. Out of that community, I often get some great recommendations for new artists to check out and one of the prominent ones in recent months has been Brooklyn-based indie pop group Nation of Language. One listen of their excellent debut album Introduction, Presence made me an instant fan and now their sophomore album has been released onto the world just over a year after that first album came out – and this new one is just as impressive.
Now the thing with Nation of Language is that admittedly they aren’t the most original band in the world - in fact they use a tried-and-tested formula of 80s style synth pop and new wave which a lot of other bands, both then and now, also choose to employ. That said though, Nation of Language have mastered this sound as well as the best of them, with A Way Forward an outstanding, classic-sounding collection of songs that will have you both dancing and singing along in no time.
In Manhatten opens the record on a wonderful synth melody and moody vocals, sounding not too dissimilar to a section of The Horrors’ classic 2009 track, Sea Within A Sea. It’s the perfect tone setter for the record, which is swiftly followed up by the terrific running bassline, glistening synths, and strutting guitars of Across That Fine Line. This is then followed by Wounds of Love which is easily one of my favourite singles of the year, sounding like it would make the perfect soundtrack to a John Hughes movie with its polished slow disco waltz and infectious singalong chorus. The Grey Commute is another strong highlight, with its whirring electronic organ, punky vocals and shimmering guitar passages.
This Fractured Mind is then the strongest contender to Wounds of Love for my favourite track of the album, with its playful synth melody and beautifully descriptive lyrics. Even if Wounds of Love edges it for sheer fun, there’s no doubt the writing on This Fractured Mind makes it the most accomplished track on the record. The next three tracks then continue down a similar path of shimmering synth-driven pleasures, before They’re Beckoning brings proceedings to a grand and atmospheric close.
Nation of Language have been one of my favourite discoveries of 2021 and with A Way Forward, it is very easy to see how they have gathered a legion of vocal fans in such a short space of time. This is a timeless sound you already know well, generated as magically as you have ever heard it.
HARD FEELINGS by HARD FEELINGS
Now if you are a fan of Nation of Language, there is a chance you may also enjoy the brilliant self-titled debut from Hard Feelings, the collaborative project between Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and vocalist Amy Douglas.
Across the album’s eight tracks, the pair deliver a glittering array of disco and old-school dance inspired tracks, with just a hint of modern electronica thrown in too for good measure. With Douglas’ powerful and soulful voice anchoring this dazzling set of songs, it makes for an all-killer-no-filler collection, with Love Scenes, Take You Down and About Us standing out as just some of the many highlights here. If you need an album to soundtrack your weekend, you won’t go far wrong with this one.
Elsewhere by Hammock
Elsewhere this week we have, well, Elsewhere – the new album from Tennessee instrumental outfit Hammock. Written during lockdown, this one is a gorgeous, misty haze of atmospheric and haunting instrumentation. Across the course of the album, the duo delivers stunning sonic textures that will just glide blissfully and elegantly across your headphones, before reaching down and touching your soul. Both moving and just beautifully ambient, this one is guaranteed to leave you floored.
Listen here
Against The Blade by The Horrors
At the complete opposite end of the spectrum, The Horrors continue their return to their heavier early roots with this hard industrial rock EP, which is more akin to Nine Inch Nails or Korn than some of their own past material. For some fans the direction change may be too jarring, but for me they sound as superb as ever here, with the title track and rave-inducing closer I Took A Deep Breath & Kept My Mouth Shut both menacingly brilliant.
Also out, also great: Valentine by Snail Mail, Once Twice Melody (EP) by Beach House, Kid A Mensia by Radiohead
Tracks of the Week
Surrounded by Spies by Placebo
The second single to drop from their first album in eight years which is due to drop early 2022, it was inspired by frontman Brian Molko discovering that his neighbours were spying on him. This soon led him to ponder, in his own words, “the countless ways in which our privacy has been eroded and stolen since the introduction of worldwide CCTV cameras and the rise of the internet.”
Atmospheric and quite ominous, it continues their terrific return whilst leaving an unsettling lasting impression.
Listen here
Taking Me Back by Jack White
Music’s chief mad scientist is back, announcing not one but two new albums due for release next year. This first taste of the upcoming new projects is instantly one of my favourite tracks of his in recent years, with some scintillating distorted guitar, buzzy synthesizers, and all of Jack White’s signature swagger. Comes accompanied with an artsy self-directed video that you can watch below.
Watch the video here
Country Boy by Spector
A track so good, it’s almost baffling how it hasn’t made it onto their forthcoming new album Now or Whenever. With Fred Macpherson in typically razor-sharp form throughout the anthemic track, he himself has described it as “a mini epic, torn between glam and glum.” Couldn’t have put it better myself!
Listen here
On The Floor by Swim Deep featuring Phoebe Green
The Brummy indie darlings made their return this week with their first new music since 2019’s excellent Emerald Classics. Lifted by some dreamy harmonies between guest singer Phoebe Green and frontman Austin Williams, along with some wonderfully summery guitars, the nights may be drawing in now but Swim Deep continue to bring the sunshine.
Listen here
New Shapes by Charli XCX featuring Christine & The Queens and Caroline Polachek
A collaboration that’s made in pure pop heaven as Christine & The Queens and Caroline from indie pop outfit Chairlift join Charli XCX on the second single from the latter’s forthcoming new album, CRASH. It’s still early days, but already Charli is two for two with the singles from this one!
Listen here
The Chapeltown Rag by Slipknot
The masked metal legends also made a brutal and punishing return this week, with a vicious vocal performance from Corey throughout and some truly seismic riff work.
Listen here
The Only Heartbreaker by Mitski
The highly acclaimed New-York based singer-songwriter also returned this week with the first single from her forthcoming new album Laurel Hell. With a typically top vocal performance, a catchy pop chorus and some wonderful shimmering synths, it’s a very promising start for Mitski’s next project dropping in 2022.
Listen here
Two Ribbons by Let’s Eat Grandma
The experimental pop duo announced their new album Two Ribbons this week, releasing this absolutely stunning title track alongside the news. A bit different to their usual work, this one is a stripped-back, heartfelt song about “the isolating experience of grieving, our powerlessness in the face of death, and the visceral emotions of grief.” For me, it’s already right up there with their best work to date.
Listen here
Bite Me by Avril Lavigne
Her first single since signing to Travis Barker’s record label, the original Queen of Pop Punk makes a triumphant return with this break-up anthem that’s mightily infectious and just a whole lot of fun. Get those hands in the air!
Listen here
Get Better by Alt-J
After a somewhat underwhelming first single for their upcoming album The Dream, this understated, folky second single from the Leeds outfit is a much stronger outing. With heartfelt vocals and striking lyrics, lead singer Joe describes it as “emotionally the most honest song he’s written.” Having heard it, I’m inclined to agree.
Listen here
Seize The Power (Whiteno1Se & Dego Remix) by Yonaka
Already one of my favourite tracks of the year, now Yonaka’s awesome title track from their latest release has gotten a full-on EDM remix to turn it into an even bigger banger than it was before. This one should be the soundtrack to your Friday night!
Listen here
Ceremony by Laura-Mary Carter
And finally this week, Laura-Mary Carter of Blood Red Shoes has delivered her soaring second solo single just a couple of weeks after the first, with this one propelled by a bluesy melody, big bold riffs and a typically stellar vocal performance. Bring on the album!
Optimise Performance of Planer & Jointer Machine with Planer Blade Setting Jig
Not able to set your planer knives perfectly?? Add up a planer blade setting jig to your tool set and wash out all your doubts about knives properly set or not. Add extra life to your knives which are not set properly by setting them up with blade setting jig. If the knife is set precisely at its place, it will not dull abruptly in short period of time and hence the performance of your Planer & Jointer Machine will be optimised in the long run.
A pair of adjustable magnetic planer jointer knife blade setter jig gauge makes installation of planer and jointer knives quickly in a trouble free manner. It can be used either for mounting High Speed Steel (HSS) planer knife or Tungsten Carbide Tipped (TCT) knives perfectly in your cutting machine. HSS blades are very sharp and yields smoothest planning results while TCT knives are relatively less sharp but remain sharp 5 times longer than HSS knives.
Planer blade setting jig comes with highly accurate planer knife vernier setting for optimum results. Its Magnetic feet attach solidly to the cutter block and hold the knife with strong magnets as intended. Knife held up securely by magnets of cutting jig leaves your hands free to work on the jibs and cutter block. It comes with easy locking Swivel feet and can accommodate block diameters ranging from 65mm to 125mm. With adjustable and lockable micrometer setting and magnetic feet, all the knives in the cutting block can be set accurately to the same height.
A properly installed planer knife will last for a longer time. If the knife is not installed properly, it will still cut but will die out soon and will result in high incurred cost eventually. In case you are searching for one, we’ll be happy to cater you. We offer fast delivery service worldwide. Moreover, all of our machines, and most other brands too, are supplied with a low cost knife setting tool.
Woodford Tooling offers you planer blade setting jigs at very low cost. The jigs can be used with most planers, thicknessers or combination machines. All you need is access to the cutter block, in most cases this means lifting up the planer beds or removing one of the tables completely. In the centre of the jig is a setting rod with another magnet for holding the tip of the blade, during setting.
Easy way of Installing of Planer Knives:
Installing a new sharp knife using planer blade setting jig not only makes your hands free but also keeps you safe from injuries. You can also reinstall your old knives if you feel they are not accurately fixed to the cutter block. Usually cutter block is fitted with 3 or 4 planer knives.
Go through your machine manual in order to find out how much part of the knife should be revealed out the cutter block. Unplug your machine from power supply.
Finding Out Zero Default Value:
Loosen up the set screw knobs at the top of the jig. Place the planer blade setting jig in the center of the cutter block. You have to carefully place each jig at the same place on the cutter block so that your knives’ height couldn’t vary from end to end. Varying height of knives could affect efficiency and produce inconsistent and undesirable planning results.
After properly positioning the jig, secure the center bar by tightening the set screw knob. Record the setting of the jig somewhere. This is zero value of the jig as per your cutter block. Repeat this for all the jigs. You could further fine tune the jig according to your instruction manual of machine with the help of micrometer attached to the jig in order to fix it most accurately.
Installing Knives:
Remove the old planer knife and clean up the cutter block and the gib. After cleaning, applying a thin oil coat will avoid corrosion in the long run.
Replace the old worn out knife with your new knife. Keep the knife slightly above the others for allowing the jigs to “push” the knife into proper position. Next, tighten the gib bolts just enough to allow for movement.
If you are placing more than one jig, make sure that they are equidistant from each other i.e. placed evenly at equal distance. Once all of the jigs are set in the proper position, secure all the gib bolts one at a time gradually. Turn each bolt a single time and move to the next bolt. If bolts are not accessible due to jig placement, complete securing all of the other bolts and then try to secure the inaccessible bolt.
Repeat this process for all remaining knives.
Your knives are installed properly now.
Important: If for any reason your knives have been re-set higher than before, it is an absolute must that the chip breaker and feed rollers be adjusted so they are below the level of the knives at the bottom of “dead centre”. For more information on how make this adjustment, refer to your planers owner manual.
Dull and worn out knives defines the efficiency and productivity of your machine. So, in case you want to replace your old and dull knives, catch up with us and order new planer knives. We are largest stockiest of planer knives and that’s why we provide our customers with best section options.
JL Article from WSJ, I´m copy pasting it here as per request because apparently the actual link is being a bitch.
WHEN JARED LETO’S people say the plan is to meet “at Jared’s base,” I assume it’s a jet-setter’s figure of speech—as in, last month he was rock climbing in Menorca, next month he’s at Fashion Week in Milan, but Los Angeles is his base. But no—they mean an actual base: a decommissioned Air Force station tucked into the hills near Laurel Canyon, built during World War II to warn of incoming Japanese planes. The 100,000-square-foot compound, which Leto has called home since 2015, features 4-foot-thick concrete blast walls, a nuclear fallout shelter and a genuine air-traffic-control tower; it’s slightly absurd that it exists 10 minutes from the Sunset Strip, much less that someone lives in it.
On the other hand, if anyone’s going to inhabit a top-secret Cold War compound in the heart of Los Angeles, it’s probably Jared Leto.
Leto has a long history of outlandishness, whether it’s waxing his body and shedding more than 30 pounds to portray a transgender AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club, or sending his castmates condoms and a live rat while playing the Joker in last year’s Suicide Squad. Beneath the theatrics, he’s an industrious quintuple-threat: Oscar-winning actor, stadium-filling rock star (with his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars), digital-media entrepreneur, burgeoning fashion icon and—as if you don’t hate him enough already—successful tech investor, whose long list of winning bets includes Uber, Snapchat, Spotify and Airbnb. “I joke sometimes that I get more done on a movie set than I do when I’m off,” he says, “because I’m not as distracted.”
We’d originally planned to go for a hike today—Leto’s a big hiker—but it’s sweltering in L.A., 94 in the shade, and he’s been dealing with some back problems, so instead we’re hanging in his backyard, a shady xeriscape with a sadly neglected pool. To relieve his back, Leto is sitting cross-legged on the ground, dressed in a white Gucci T-shirt, green Gucci jogging pants (from the women’s collection) and a pair of worn-out gray Ugg slippers. His hair is its natural shade of chestnut, and his beard has achieved 1840s-prospector length. He also has the best posture I’ve ever seen. At 45, he looks almost exactly as he did nearly 25 years ago, when he first became famous playing the angsty heartthrob Jordan Catalano on My So-Called Life.
“I call him Babyface,” says his friend Alessandro Michele, creative director at Gucci. “He is timeless—it is almost impossible to give him age. If Visconti were still alive, he would love to work with Jared.”
Last night Leto was up late in the studio, working on his band’s next album. He woke around 9 a.m.—no alarm, as usual—and enjoyed his standard breakfast of muesli and almond milk, then spent some time tending to his back—heat, ice; meditation. But leisurely appearances aside, “it’s actually a super-busy time,” Leto says. In a few days he’s flying to Kazakhstan for a concert with the band; then he’ll start getting ready to promote his new film, Blade Runner 2049—the much-anticipated sequel to the dystopian 1982 sci-fi classic, in which Harrison Ford played an L.A. cop hunting down rogue androids.
Leto still remembers the first time he saw the original on VHS. “It was one of those films I just connected with,” he says. “I’ve watched it every couple of years.” In the sequel, he has what he calls “a small part” as a character named Niander Wallace, who creates said androids, known in the Blade Runneruniverse as “replicants.”
Denis Villeneuve, the director of the new film, says the inspiration for Leto’s character was David Bowie. “I needed a very charismatic, magnetic presence, someone with the aura of a rock star,” Villeneuve says. “But I also needed a great actor, because the lines he had to say were quite Shakespearean.” The character is also blind, and true to form, Leto—who once hung out with homeless junkies in Manhattan’s East Village to portray a heroin addict in Requiem for a Dream—dove in head-first. “We all heard stories about Jared, how he transforms into the characters,” Villeneuve says. “But even this didn’t prepare me for what was to come.”
Not content to simply act blind, Leto decided to become blind, ordering customized contact lenses that made his eyes totally opaque. “He entered the room, and he could not see at all,” Villeneuve recalls. “He was walking with an assistant, very slowly. It was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple. Everybody became super silent, and there was a kind of sacred moment. Everyone was in awe. It was so beautiful and powerful—I was moved to tears. And that was just a camera test!”
Leto stayed blind for the entire shoot, guided around set and never laying eyes on the rest of the cast. “That, for me, was insane,” Villeneuve says. “But he really created something. Every time Jared came on set, it was a boost of energy, tension and excitement.” (For his part, Leto says, he “didn’t dive as deep down the rabbit hole as maybe I’ve done before, but I stayed really focused.” Of course, he didn’t delude himself that he was actually blind. “I’m crazy,” he says, “but I’m not insane.”)
As he sits here in his garden, it’s easy to see the commitment that Leto can summon. He’s incredibly calm and still, with no extraneous movements, like some lizardlike desert creature conserving energy in the heat. He listens intently, with laserlike eye contact, and he barely seems to blink. (Says Michele, “I call him a monk sometimes, because he’s so concentrated.”) With his ageless physicality and otherworldliness, he could almost be a replicant himself.
Villeneuve agrees. “He has a kind of eternal youth syndrome. But the thing I love about Jared is that he’s really at peace with himself. He’s a perfectionist. And like all rock stars, he has a bit of narcissism. But it’s a narcissism that I can deal with.”
WE’VE BEEN TALKING a while when Leto hops up and starts doing a little shake. I tell him to feel free to walk around or stretch if he needs to. “No,” he says. “I was getting covered with ants. I’m going to make them work a little harder.”
We retreat inside the safety of the base, where Leto offers to take me on a tour. Although he moved in a couple of years ago, the place remains a work in progress, with dingy floor tiles, scuffed white paint and the distinct odor of midcentury bureaucracy lingering in the halls. “I’m going to redo it at some point,” Leto says, “make it nice. But I’m kind of just camping out.”
We start in his bedroom.“It’s fancy,” Leto warns. But he opens the door to reveal a glorified walk-in closet, maybe 200 square feet, with small windows, a loveseat and a mattress sitting right on the floor. “It’s amazing,” Leto says, smiling. “When it comes down to it, you don’t need very much.” The only hint of luxury is a portable clothes rack that holds what looks like a small fortune in high-end apparel—most of it from his friend Michele at Gucci.
Recently Leto has become the label’s face, both officially and unofficially, starring in a fragrance campaign and often rocking ensembles in public taken straight from the runway. The infatuation runs both ways: “I’ve been inspired by him many times,” Michele says. “The way he puts gym pants with crazy hats or something—it’s beautiful. He says, ‘I don’t care about fashion,’ but it’s not true. He’s like the most fashionable gypsy you can imagine.”
Leto seems amused that he’s become a style icon—“There was a period a decade ago when I wore Hare Krishna clothes”—but he does admit to getting bolder and more confident with age. “When I was younger I was like, ‘Give me something black,’ ” he says. “But now I love color. You know how you see old guys wearing loud Hawaiian shirts? If I walk off the bus, and the crew starts laughing, I know I put the right thing on.”
We proceed deeper into the bowels of the house, passing large metal tins labeled SURVIVAL CRACKERS (“I haven’t opened them yet”) and a few doors marked USAF TOP SECRET. After World War II ended, the base became a military film studio, churning out propaganda films hosted by the likes of Jimmy Stewart. “There are so many crazy rumors about this place,” Leto says. “Everything from ‘Part of the moon landing was filmed here’ to ‘They used to keep prisoners downstairs.’ They had laboratories. They were doing all kinds of God-knows-what.” He is clearly enamored by this.
In one of the building’s subbasements, we pass Leto’s home gym (with photos of Schwarzenegger and Bruce Lee) and then the garage where he keeps his vintage Ford Bronco—a metallic-blue beast with orange flames down the side, a birthday gift from his brother, Shannon. “He was like, ‘You can get it repainted,’ ” Leto says, “and I was like, ‘No way, man!’ I used to have a little Tonka truck that looked just like that.” The Letos grew up poor, on food stamps in Louisiana, with a hippie single mom who encouraged them to follow their artistic dreams. Leto studied film and photography at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan before dropping out and moving to L.A. in hopes of becoming a director. He started acting, and a few years later talked Shannon into moving out to start a band.
Next we walk through a hangarlike storage room Leto calls “the warehouse,” full of Thirty Seconds to Mars’s road cases and gear, and from there emerge onto the base’s old soundstage, which Leto has repurposed as a recording studio and rehearsal space. “We had an acoustician come by, and he said we have the same reverb as Abbey Road,” Leto says. “Isn’t that wild?” In the control room, an engineer is going over mixes from last night’s session, tweaking the vocal tracks for the band’s new single (“Walk on Water,” released in August). “I’d say we’re 80 percent done,” Leto says of the album. He smiles: “But I’ve been saying that for two years.”
Back upstairs, Leto starts to grow a bit bored. “I can show you more, but it’s really big,” he says. “It just keeps going and going and going.” He knows it’s kind of silly for a bachelor pad. “But it works for me,” he says. “I can do creative stuff here, I can live here. And I don’t have to sit in traffic.”
There’s one last oddity he wants to point out: a skylight in the middle of the floor that peers down into a small enclosure, maybe 8 feet square, with no discernible doors. It looks suspiciously like a dungeon. “Weird, right?” says Leto, grinning. He slips into a pitch-perfect impression of Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs: “Put the lotion in the basket!” he booms, cracking up. I point out that at least the skylight unlatches from the inside, leaving open the possibility of escape. “Yeah,” he says, “but you’d have to get up there first”—a sheer 10-foot climb with no holds. He smiles deviously. “Give ’em just enough hope to keep ’em alive.”
IT’S NEARING TIME for Leto to say goodbye: His next appointment is already waiting, some people from a tech giant. At the moment, Leto is looking for a buyer for his digital streaming platform, VyRT, a company he started in 2011 to live-stream his band’s concerts. That was his second foray into the tech world; previously he had launched a digital-marketing company called the Hive, and over the past decade has become a serious tech investor, backing more than 50 startups including Uber, Snapchat, Reddit, Spotify, Slack and Nest.
“He’s very different from the normal cats from Hollywood and L.A. I see playing around the Valley,” says Nest co-founder Tony Fadell, whose company Leto invested in three years before it was acquired by Google for $3.2 billion, in 2014. (Leto didn’t disclose the size of his investment, but Fadell says for “an individual, it was a significant amount of money.”) “A lot of people from that world say, ‘My manager’s gonna take care of it, my agent’s gonna take care of it’—they don’t worry about the details,” Fadell adds. “And a lot of people are meddlers or know-it-alls who want to lead from the bench. That was not his thing. Jared is very curious, very detail-oriented; he really gets involved, and he really understands. He only added value.”
“I was actually really impressed,” says Stewart Butterfield, a co-founder of Slack, which Leto invested in in 2014. “Jared gave a lot of feedback, and all of it was very practical, specific, concrete feedback about usability and improving the platform. He found the right balance,” Butterfield adds, “between persistent and irritating.”
When it comes to his investing philosophy, Leto says, “I like to learn. So if I can be involved in a company that teaches me something, I’m happy.” There are also a few deals he passed on and still kicks himself over. “Oh, my God, are you kidding?” Leto says. “There are some doozies. I can’t [talk about it]—I’ll have to call a therapist.”
All these side hustles aside, Leto’s not giving up his day job anytime soon. He’s attached to play Andy Warhol in an upcoming biopic written by Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street), and he’ll soon be directing his first feature, a police thriller called 77 with a script by L.A. noir legend James Ellroy. Leto—a devoted rock climber who sometimes posts his best ascents to Instagram along with a monkey emoji—has previously directed a documentary series on America’s national parks called Great Wide Open as well as several music videos.
“Always when you are around Jared Leto, you are in Jared Leto’s theater,” Denis Villeneuve says. “It’s like a play—you become a character. But he’s having fun with it, and he brings you in his game. You just fall in love with him.”
If there’s one thing Leto hasn’t done but would like to, it’s a comedy. Sadly, no one ever asks. “I might not be at the top of the list for, like, a funny dude,” he says. “But if someone is dying or suffering greatly, I’ll get a call.” He laughs ruefully. “I got calls about [playing] Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, David Koresh and Jim Jones, all within two weeks. I’m not doing them,” he adds, “but I thought for a second, ‘Oh, my God, I should do them all.’ Just put them together like a Criterion Collection box set. And then retire.”
