Best Heavy Metal Releases Weekend of March 11, 2022
HOLY SHIT! What a week! Seemed like every other album I listened to this week could have made highlight section. Some may argue, but I think this was the best overall week for new releases of the year so far. The week with Mist from the Mountains and Celeste was very strong, but I think this one was better. I think I could have put at least 15 albums on the highlight list, but no one wants to read that much so I had to back it down a bit. Just remember quite a few of the albums that I gave just one star could have easily been given two stars, as can’t miss albums. Enough of the intro let me tell you about some albums that really blew me away.
Veriteras-Shadow of Death (Melodic Black)**
I labeled it as Melodic Black as it has more of a Black Metal sounding vocalist but the music is more in line with Melodic Death Metal. This is a tight 32 minute album that just rips from beginning to end. Great guitars and melodies throughout, with very slight moments of a symphonic feel here and there.
Vanir-Sagas (Melodic Death/Viking)**
The opening track to this album (Day of Reckoning) is a perfect representation of what you are in for. Starts with this ominous spoken word bit that just builds until it explodes into this killer Melodic Death Metal riffing with tons melody that adds to that riff and makes it sound even bigger. Symphonic elements courtesy of the keyboards add that extra touch of making the album feel bigger and more expansive. This was very close to being the pick of the week.
In Aphelion-Moribund (Melodic Black)**
Vanir was almost the pick of the week until I came across this album. Fuck me running is this ever good. I normally don’t say what my pick of the week is as I post it at the end with a picture of the namesake of this blog, but this is not just the pick of the week, it is my pick of the year so far. This album is absolutely fantastic. Incredible guitar work is the major highlight here, but there really is a lot to choose from. The guitars absolutely shred on this album, which is something you rarely find in this genre. The leads are hands down the best I have heard on a Melodic Black Metal album. Songs are all extremely well written with a ton of variety. The drumming is fantastic. Technique wise, absolutely flawless but a firm understanding of what the song needs and not going above and beyond that. Check out the track “The Night Seems Endless” for a perfect example of what I mean. Production is, again, absolutely flawless. Enormous and expansive and “weighty” for lack of a better term. I could gush about this album all day but just listen to it already! SO FUCKING GOOD!
Bastard-Rotten Blood (Black n’ Roll)**
I actually raved about this album a few months ago. I must have gotten an advanced copy in my promo folder and didnt look at the date but whatever the case, it is widely available on most of the streaming services. Ever wonder what Motorhead would have sounded like if heavier and more menacing and angry vocals? Wonder no longer as this is it. This album simply fucking smokes! I also contacted the band to ask if there would be a vinyl edition of this and was told as soon as the backlog at the pressing plants is freed up, it will be in the works. I like this album so much I may just buy multiple copies to hand out to friends. Who am I kidding? I don’t have friends. I spend way too much time listening to music…lol
Blackslash-No Steel, No Future (Heavy/Traditional)**
I’m a Metalhead from way back so I have a special spot in my rotted black heart for that traditional NWOBHM Metal sound and because of that, I absolutely LOVE this band. I came across them a few years ago and these guys do that Traditional Heavy Metal sound incredibly well without sounding dated or a pale imitation of yet another Iron Maiden or Judas Priest clone. Catchy as hell songs that are just made for a road trip in warm weather. If you are one of those people that think no good music has come out since 1989, do yourself a favor and listen to this album. Just a FYI, but as of writing this, it is still not available on Spotify but it is on YouTube.
Besna-Zverstva (Melodic Black)**
This album I actually stumbled across late on Sunday afternoon and I am really glad I did. I would be very surprised if it doesn’t make a push for a pretty prominent spot on my best of end-of-year list. Like the album from Mist from the Mountains, this share that feeling of if Opeth were to create a Melodic Black Metal album. “Proggy” style guitars and song structures, but with a decided Melodic Black Metal edge. It really does a great job of mixing those two genres. This band is currently unsigned and if that is a personal choice, it is one thing, but if it isn’t, some large record company better snap them up as there is a TON of talent in this band.
Like I said in the beginning, a LOT of the one star albums easily could have made this highlight section, but I need to try and keep these blog posts on the shorter side as attention spans are shorter in the era of tik tok and YouTube. This blog is ongoing in its form and I am always open to ideas to make it better. If there are any suggestions on how you think it might be better, reach out as I am always open to fresh ideas. Until next week and, as always,
