An amazing quote from Audre Lorde, an American writer who dedicated her work to confront and address injustices of racism, sexism, classism and homophobia. . . . .

Tonight we witnessed a public outcry for universal change starting at a local level. Let George's death be the pivotal moment that won't be taken in vain. Use your vote and voice in your local elections. See the worth and beauty of blackness. Unify under a common cause and directive. Protest with your dollars and put them towards black owned businesses. Have those hard conversations with your white and non-black peers and allies. Amplify the platforms and voices of your black peers. Hold the corrupt figures in your everyday lives accountable to dismantle racism from the ground up. Let us breathe. This is just the beginning of the work. Because #BlackLivesMatter and #BlackLivesMatterToMe (at Town of Bloomfield, CT) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBCS8Ughaw9/?igshid=17xd1z8bk3kab

📷📸📷 from @mrjakewright - I am a very unpolitical person. I used to post my views all the time on social media. And now, I really don’t. I went to the protest last night because I wanted to capture human emotion. And maybe make a connection or two with people. And I got this photo. I tried to capture the human side to what was going on. I see someone here in sheer wonder and awe of what they were experiencing. Just as I was. We both caught eye contact when I went to take this photo. And I wondered what life experiences may have brought them to this place. And how I could try to see myself in them. Set your political beliefs aside for a moment and try to enjoy the art that I attempted to create. To be truly human is to be able to see yourself in someone else. That is grace. ⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #protest #blacklivesmattertoo #blackpride #blacklivesmattertome #georgefloydprotest #rochester #blacklivesmatter #photography #blackisbeautiful #streetphotographycommunity #fujifilm #peacefulprotest #blacklivesmattermovement #blackgirlsrock #myfujifilm #fujifilmxseries #fujifeed #streetphotographymagazine #love #rochesternyphotographer #fujilove #thestreetphotographyhub #rochesterprotest #streetphotographyinternational #myfujilove #blacklivesmatterprotest #rochesterprotests #myfujifilmlegacy (at Rochester, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFZ1ksqBkds/?igshid=qiqyb3sne7ew

In life I’m an activist. Insta I usually use just for good photography and leave the activism to Twitter and FB. a (semi)short essay you should read.
my black friends and my friends in law enforcement, you have both been heavy on my heart. I cannot begin to imagine how George Floyd’s death and the events that have followed this week have weighed on you. I apologize for my silence but to be honest, I’ve been struggling to find the right words to say not only to you, but my white friends and family. I’d like to start by addressing my white friends who have made blanket statements along the vein of “we all see who is staying silent right now and it doesn’t go unnoticed… yada yada”. Please have some grace here. This is not a competition to be the first or most supportive white person on social media. This is about using your individual talents and sphere of influence to impact change on behalf of the black community. You shouldn’t assume silence on social media means neutrality or complacency. Or that it means a lack of empathy or support for the black community. Silence could mean time spent in prayer, it could mean taking action offline and not looking for a pat on the back, it could mean taking the time to educate oneself before speaking, and it could also mean someone is personally struggling with something else. THIS is a problematic way of thinking— we are quick to assume, to place blame, to position ourselves as superior, and to forget that you are walking your own path, not someone else’s. If you have noticed someone staying silent, pick up your phone and call them, rather than calling them out. Find out what’s on their heart, talk to them about what is happening, they may be struggling to understand another perspective, and that’s an opportunity for you to create conversation. My silence on social media hasn’t been because I don’t care, it’s because I care deeply. I know that my opinion and my words bear weight and influence within my community. If I’m going to speak on this, it can’t be from a place of self-defense or ignorance. It has to be from a place of accountability, empathy, and it needs to make an impact on those around me. Social media is not the final measure of someone’s heart, please remember that. The next thing I’d like to address with anyone who doesn’t think black people are treated differently by the police or their peers, please hear me when I say this: If you have never or will never have to have a conversation with your child/niece/nephew/grandchild about how their actions coupled with the color of their skin have a direct correlation to how they are perceived or if they will make it home safely at night, then you are the proud recipient of white privilege. You have or will have many fears as a parent, but you will not have the same fears and responsibilities of a black mother or father. None of us get to choose the color of our skin and we should not be shamed for being born white, but pretending that we are treated equally is ignorance or naivety. It’s your responsibility as a white person to use your privilege on behalf of anyone that is perceived as less than. That includes any person of color, not just black people. The second you were born white, you were given a unique position in power over others. You didn’t ask for it, but you have it and what you do with it can positively or negatively impact another person. Racism impacts all of us, not just some of us. Not just on occasion or if your skin is black. It’s a threat to every individual or group of people because it thrives off of the hate for someone who is different. Hate isn’t mutually exclusive with the color of your skin, it can target religion, gender, political views, or sexuality. It can be preached from a pulpit or tweeted from the highest office in our nation. If we let it grow, let it go unchallenged, there will come a day you may be on the receiving end for simply being yourself or having a different point of view. I believe what lies ahead will not be resolved with an “us versus them” mentality. We are all human. We each have a point of view, shaped by the path and experiences that are individual to us. Much like the threads that make up a delicate piece of fabric, each of our lives is woven together so intricately. Each spool of thread can have slight variations in color, but each thread is integral in creating something beautiful.  To my black friends, you deserve so much more than an apology, but from the bottom of my heart, I am truly sorry for the things you experience simply because you were born black. If it wasn’t already clear, you have an ally in me. I should be transparent, in that I wasn’t truly aware of my privilege until I moved out on my own into a more diverse city and had to provide for myself. I could try to defend myself and say it’s because I have a Hispanic father and I was raised in a household that honors and celebrates non-white traditions. Or that I was raised to measure a person by their heart and not what they look like or how much money they have. While all of these things are true, they fade into the background because I have white skin. In most cases, my white skin allows me more affordances than someone without it. I desperately wish you and I were first measured by what’s inside our hearts, but we know it’s not the case. If I have ever come off as unaware or flippant towards how differently we are treated, please know it wasn’t my intent and I am consciously making an effort to do better. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to cross paths, work alongside, and build lasting friendships with people of different cultures and races. You have enriched my life with your personal history, your culture, and your friendship. You have shaped the person standing before you, you have allowed me to be part of your community and you are mine. I know without a doubt God put me on this earth to help shoulder the burdens of those around me, to see someone else’s heart and perspective, and to show His grace where it is needed. He also gave me a voice that can command a room and a passion for finding the right words. I know in the pit of my stomach what is happening to you cannot continue to happen and I promise to use my strengths, my privilege, and my resources to challenge my community and sphere of influence when you, the black community, aren’t being treated equally. Your black life absolutely matters to me. I don’t ever want to experience the loss of you. I don’t want to be able to relate to the friends/families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others. I cannot fathom the agony it is to feel that particular loss and I will continue to speak up until you don’t have to either. If you have made it this far, and you still don’t get it, do the following exercise: hold your breath for as long as you can and just as you feel you need to take another, pretend for a moment you can’t, your spouse can’t, your child can’t. You continue to gasp for air but someone’s knee is on your neck and in less than 10 minutes you are gone and the lives around you are shattered. They will never not feel the weight of that loss. It doesn’t matter what color your skin is, a human life cannot be replaced and we should all be fighting for black families not to have to continue to endure that devastating loss over and over again. Psalm 139:13 - 16
