A Poorly Timed Conversation - November 27, 2019 [Bonus!]
Part of my Resolution19. Read it on AO3.
Prompt: "I'm going to go take some clothes off now." (My boss and I were talking about how that really only works in a work environment if you're in Minnesota. I thought differently.)
Fandom: Supernatural
Words: 646
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Dean!"
Dean turned at the familiar gravelly voice. "Cas? What the hell are you doing here?" He scowled at the other man, but continued putting a stud through his earlobe. He was on a tight schedule, after all.
"I needed to speak with you." Cas looked seventeen kinds of out of place in the green room of Lawrence's premier gay strip club, what with his black suit and sapphire blue tie. Though the flasher trenchcoat...
Dean turned away from him to check his makeup in the mirror. "Little busy, Cas," he ground out.
"I didn't like where we left our conversation," Cas continued, seeming not to notice the absolutely terrible timing.
"What's there to say?" Dean asked, frustration making his voice tight. He tugged on his thigh-high fishnets, making sure they were all the way up, a scant inch of skin showing below his tight lycra shorts. "I told you I loved you and you said thank you."
"I've been thinking about it since you left--" You mean when I stormed out and barely remembered to grab my pants and wallet, Dean mentally correctly "--and I have come to the conclusion that that was a 'stupid' thing to do."
And he did the damn air quotes, too. Dean couldn't believe he loved this dorky man so much. Hang on...
"You mean you called your brother and he told you it was stupid," Dean guessed.
Cas hesitated, then nodded. "Gabriel did say that it was one of the stupidest things he'd ever known me to do, if that helps," he offered.
Dean sighed. "Not really, Cas." He grabbed his breakaway chaps and started pulling them on. What? He had a thing for cowboys, okay?
"What do you want, Cas?" he asked tiredly, making sure the velcro was lined up properly on the seams.
"I would like to 'redo' our conversation from this morning," Cas said, determination shining through every syllable.
"Fine," Dean bit out, grabbing his shiny, low-cut vest and shimmying into it.
"Good morning," Cas said softly, and damn him, but Dean could picture the way the morning sunlight had filtered through the window of Cas's bedroom, alighting on every lock of his tousled hair and making his blue eyes glow...
Dean cleared his throat, keeping his eyes on the sheriff's badge he was pinning to his vest. "'Morning," he said, not even trying to match his soft whisper from that morning.
"What time's your show today?" Cas asked.
"Matinee at 2," Dean said, checking himself in the mirror and glancing at the clock. Two minutes.
"Do you want to go out for dinner afterwards?" Cas asked, just the same way he had that morning. "I think Jo's been experimenting with a new sauce combination."
And just the same way as he had that morning, Dean could feel affection for this man well up inside him, at the knowledge that he knew how much the Roadhouse and her owners meant to him. The way they were family. He closed his eyes. "I love you," he whispered.
He felt Cas take his hand. "I love you, too, Dean," he said gently. "So very much."
Dean whipped his head around and stared at Cas, but all he saw was honesty. He couldn't deal with this right now. For one thing, he was out of time.
"I'm going to go take some clothes off now," he said faintly around the lump in his throat.
"By all means, be my guest," Cas said, a wicked smile spreading across his face. He gently picked up the cowboy hat from Dean's dressing table and set it carefully on his head.
"Okay," Dean said, a bit dazed as he pulled his hand out of Cas's grasp and backed away towards the door. "Okay," he repeated, then turned and left quickly. He had a show to put on. And a man to ravish afterwards.
#Resolution19#Supernatural#spn#destiel#au#stripper!dean#yes i did an extra#i didn't mean to!#honest i didn't!#and it's a bit of a cheat on the name#but 'poorly timed' is an adjectival phrase#so i'm going to let it slide

Leggings - Why So Comfortable?
Is there something about these physically that make them more comfortable than trousers? Leggings are so much comfortable feeling, although I have pants which are made with a comfortable and stretchy waistband. Why is that?
They can be made from wool, silk and other materials, although Modern leggings are made from a blend of Lycra, spandex, nylon, cotton, or polyester mix. Leggings can be found in a large number of colors and designs that are decorative.
Leggings are worn exposed, and are more worn covered by a garment like a a skirt or shorts, or covered. Leggings are, and a few are stirrupped or encase the toes. Some are shorter. Leggings are worn to maintain somebody's legs warm, as protection against chafing during an activity like exercise or as a garment that is style or decorative. Both women and men wear Leggings when exercising, but usually by girls at times.
In modern use, leggings describes tight, form-fitting pants that stretch from the waist to the ankles. As tights, they are known in america. However, both words aren't synonymous as the term tights describes opaque pantyhose.
History
Leggings under different names and in a variety of forms are employed for protection and warmth by women and men throughout the centuries. The distinct hose worn by men in Europe in the 13th to 16th centuries (the Renaissance period) were a kind of leggings, as would be the trews of the Scottish Highlands. Independent leggings of buckskin leather were worn by some Native Americans. Some Long Hunters fur trappers, and afterwards by mountain men adopted these. They're the leatherstockings of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales. Nowadays, the Buckskins, were a gray brain-tan, not the bright vegetable tanned leather used.
Cowboys bites from animals, like insects or snakes in the scruff, and wore leggings of buckskin to shield from chapping due to riding, wear and tear to their trousers.
In many areas, particularly in countries such as Korea or Russia, women and men chose to wear wool leggings as an additional layer for heat, often into contemporary times.
The linen pantalettes worn by women and women under crinolines from the century were a type of leggings, and were two different garments. Leggings became a part of fashion as pants tighter although like the pants. Patricia Field, Fashion designer, claimed that she invented the leggings in the 1970s for girls.
Army leggings
Since the 19th century, soldiers of nations infantry wore leggings to protect their leg, keep from entering their sneakers, sand, dirt, and mud, and to give a measure of support. Initially, these were generally puttees--strips of thick woolen fabric resembling a huge bandage--were wrapped around the leg to support the ankle. They were held in place with a strap. Afterwards, a few armies substituted puttees with canvas leggings secured with buttons or bucklessecured with an stirrup that passed just in the base. The soldier put the leggings with the strap and the side facing out and corrected them around his calf. Leggings extended to mid-calf and had a garter strap to hold up them and were secured just below the knee. Leggings buttoned on the knee-breeches into the button and extended to the base of the knee. They are sometimes confused with gaiters, which extend to the ankle and are worn with leg trousers.

During World War II, United States Army foot soldiers were known as legs by paratroopers and other U.S. forces which did not wear the normal Army leggings issued together with the area service shoe. After experimentation with dilemma of boots and combat boots to their soldiers, leggings started to disappear from service. By adding a leather top that reached to the calf, the United States Army altered their area service shoe; ensured by a combination of buckles and laces, the design was designated the Type III Field Boot. However, the United States Marine Corps retained canvas leggings during the war, and even used them in battle and the Korean War; they had been known as Yellow Leg troops by North Korean and Chinese Communist forces.
From the 1960s, the kind of field shoe had given way to combat boots and leggings of any sort were obsolete. Leggings, usually white and made from enthusiast or patent leather are worn for ceremonial purposes. .
Modern leggings
A version of the capris finish at ankle length, Leggings in the kind of pants, made its way into fashion and were worn with high heels or ballet shoes that were flat-styled and a belt.
Leggings made out of a nylon-lycra mix (generally 90% nylon, 10 percent lycra) have traditionally been worn during exercise. Nylon lycra leggings are known as running or bicycle tights, and are more shiny in appearance than those. Some have racing reflective or stripes patterns provide safety and to differentiate them. Beginning in the 1980s leggings also have been worn for fashion, and as street wear.
Leggings made from a mix, or cotton-lycra, are more worn for fashion, but are worn as exercise wear. Navy and various shades of gray stay the most; although leggings can be found in prints, many colors and designs.
Wearing black leggings under long, frequently diaphanous, skirts was a part of an overall fashion trend of wearing dance or gym clothes as street wear which evolved along with the fitness craze and under the influence of the film Flashdance and the long-running Broadway series A Chorus Line. A recent trend has been the wearing of black leggings with miniskirts.
Women occasionally wear leggings with no skirt. Unless the girl is wearing a top, her buttocks will be exposed. There might be a line.
In many areas of america, leggings actually outsold jeans from the early-1990s. It was common to find leggings worn with sweaters, slouch socks and Keds sweatshirts or long. Fashion turned from the 1990s against leggings.
In 2005, leggings made a "comeback" into high style, especially in literary civilization, with capri-length leggings being worn with mini dresses and skirts. Leggings are popular to wear with denim mini skirt long sleeves skirts, shorts and in spite of shorts. Converse Chucks and flats are footwear with leggings. This tendency towards trousers can be viewed from the resurgence of jeans.
Men also have started to wear leggings often lately as underwear, and for casual activities like hiking, walking or gardening, replacing the old standby, sweatpants. Guys on the London scene that was electro-music also wear as a fashion trend Leggings. In the Marni Men's show Week, outfits with leggings designed for men were introduced.
Men's leggings, dubbed "meggings" (as a combination of the words "men" and "leggings") have been introduced as the latest fashion trend for men at Spring/Summer 2011 fashion runways, supposed to be styled and layered under shorts and preferably with big, baggy, long or loose shirts such as t-shirts.
Shiny leggings
Shiny leggings--leggings which have a shiny, metallic (lamé), or wet-like look--emerged as a popular fashion trend from the late-2000s (decade), especially in 2008 as reported by Stylesignal and other trend forecasters. These leggings are a mix of nylon and spandex although most commonly in stone, silver, or black and come in many different colors. These kinds of leggings are notable for their leather, or even look and are worn as clubwear or day.
Many designers showcased on fashion runways Shiny leggings and were popularized by celebrities such Frida Sanden, Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, Olsen Twins, Rihanna, Lindsay Lohan and the Lauren Conrad. Popular manufacturers of leggings comprise Kova, Members Only & T and American Apparel.
Jeggings
Jeggings are a version of leggings. They're leggings which take certain attributes from jeans, such as color and style and especially a colored seam down the side, thus a combination of the two and thus the adoption of the title "Jeggings". Some styles have taken the look as adding faux zip-flies and pockets to increase the look.
Sports and leggings
Leggings are also worn during athletic activities. People exercising wear them, and runners, dancersskirts as leggings are excellent in keeping body heat, and under soccer and field hockey shin guards and knee socks. Normally a material.

Leggings Are Not Pants: An Essay
Just because something is trendy doesn’t make it right. Unless you’re six or on a ski slope, leggings are not pants. I’m bombarded with shiny black thighs and the indentation of female buttocks and it makes me wonder: where does one go dressed like that? To the gym? Surely not the workplace or out to dinner with a beau.
The first time I saw this fashion statement I thought I was witnessing someone on their way to a body casting appointment. Without a doubt, plaster of paris would soon be covering the bottom half of this good Samaritan to make prosthetic limb molds for the needy. Between donating her physical form to charity and reading to underprivileged children, I mused, it’s no wonder she forgot her pants.
Look down. The pants you have on might actually be leggings if you can: 1) count the wrinkles on your knee or, 2) they’re made out of Lycra, Spandex, or nylon.
The purpose of pants is to hide our nakedness. Leggings as pants fail to achieve this objective as much as dipping one’s naked body in paint would also fall short of an appropriate covering. Although your skin may be sheathed, we’re seeing quite a bit of you.
Somewhere far away in a mansion with marble floors, a beret-wearing fashion designer who looks like much like Alladin’s Jafar, is snickering into a glass of rare wine. They told him it wasn’t possible; his leggings as pants idea would fall flat, women would never subject themselves to such level of ogling. Jafar was right. Women may have the vote but what we really want is sexual/curious attention from strangers.
But they’re comfortable. So are my pink lounging slippers but somehow I manage to keep them at home. Many people (read: unemployed) find traditional pants to be too stifling for everyday wear. In that case, I suggest a more fitted version of the sweat pant known as yoga pants. These coverings provide the comfort of leggings and allow your skin to do something a synthetic second skin doesn’t: breathe.
Every morning mothers around the world solemnly explain to their 2-year-olds why wearing pants- and keeping them on throughout the day- is not optional. Twenty-somethings, let’s prove to the rest of society that we can be taken seriously. Instead of thinking “What would Tyra do?” as you choose an outfit, ask yourself if Michelle Obama could be considered a respectable First Lady to the antichrist (see how stupid that sounds?) if she dressed like an urban ballerina. Let’s make positive choices. Let’s wear pants.
Tights and thick nylons are very cute paired with skirts and dresses. In cold climates, they’re a lifesaver layered under pants. Underclothes = leggings, bras, panties. Outer-clothes = pants, shirts, blouses, sweaters.
Unless you’re 6. Or on a ski slope.

Falltum In America’s Rust Belt
Is it fall? Is it autumn? Don’t be silly, it’s Falltum. Considering my present affection for both sides of the pond, I’ve made a UK-US seasonal term compromise, and hereby introduce: Falltum. Gosh I’m diplomatic. Someone make me Pres-Minister already.
Passing through through Indiana, Ohio and Northern Pennsylvania during Falltum is a delight. It’s like the trees are having a party (not in their pants) and everyone’s invited. Well except the Evergreens. They, evidently, missed the memo. And remain stubbornly clad in their verdurous robes as surrounding neighbours partake in a slow summer-end striptease. Of course we have turning leaves in the UK, but nothing quite like the US. In the US, trees pop. They erupt. They explode in a multitude of colours, the likes of which I’ve just never seen before in shrub form. It’s stunning at best, and intriguing at worst. Fall in the North-East US is one thing about which you should definitely believe the hype.
So, aye, it’s cold. Aye, I have to check the weather on an hourly basis and dabble in days of rain and wind. But who gives a Badger’s nadger about that when there’s a chance you’ll get blue skies and sights like the below? Not I, for one.
LOU ANN, THE STORYTELLER
In the midst of my Falltum tour, I came across a profile on cycle hosting website Warm Showers which (in part) read: “... I live in a hundred year old house in a lovely mid-western town. I am a writer and a story teller, hang my laundry out in my garden!… Folks are often found sitting round in my living room listening to music and telling stories. ”
Well. Isn’t that the profile of a woman you simply have to meet? I thought so. Luckily I was in town on the one night that Lou Ann could actually host a vagabond. When I arrived there was no one about, but a kindly neighbour showed me indoors and I texted to notify her that there was now a Lycra clad stranger in her living room. A reply came quickly back - “Am out galavanting. Back soon”. Marvellous. I think the world would be a far better place if people galavanted just a little more, or in fact at all. I for one, plan to galavant much more on my return to the UK. Life’s just to short not to.
Her house is a marvel in itself. Brimming with trinkets, theatre posters, instruments and photos - it is a ‘real’ home. One that’s an extension of the owner’s personality. Enough with the minimalist, clean surfaced, clinical spaces, I say, give me a cosy cave any day. There was even a 'welcome wall’ with quotes an signatures from previous guests - Something that made me feel as if I were creating a little piece of history, just by crossing the threshold.
Once Lou Ann returned, we got to chatting. And I slowly pieced together the rich tapestry that is her life. With each paragraph came a new activity, passion or contribution to the local community. She’s a storyteller by trade (a rare art), and when not touring the country, spends summers on Oracoke Island - off the coast of Virginia, telling ghost tales of the legendary Black Beard, who sunk nearby. She’s also a professor at the local university, writes and performs community plays, hosts seasonal and themed parties in her living room and contributes a weekly column for Northern Indiana newspapers. To further warm your heart, she rides her shiny Trek bike (a Mother’s day present) everywhere around town, and is perplexed by those who don’t use two wheels instead of four “I did 12 errands on my bike today. It just makes good sense. I don’t know what it is about being on a bike - that feeling you get. I can’t quite describe it…”
Lou Ann is a gem, and one of life’s true characters. As a friend of mine recently wrote, no matter how abrupt and transient our modern day Tweet/Facebook/Email exchanges become - there’s always space and indeed a human need for a really good story. It’s food for the soul, and at this - Lou Ann is a Masterchef.
NIAGARA FALLS
This wasn’t my first meeting with Lady Niagara. I was lucky enough to visit the falls as part of a Toronto school netball tour, at the tender age of 16. Experience tells me that American readers aren’t familiar with netball. It’s like basketball, but you don’t move. Yes it’s silly, but were really rather good at it. This time, things were different. This time, I wasn’t dressed in 'shants’ (why? Just why?), nor was I listening to, and achingly sympathising with the plight of Blink 182. No, no this time - I was making my Niagara assault from the US of A.
I cannie lie to you all, visiting Niagra from the US side isn’t especially scenic, and that’s putting it kindly. The only way for me to describe it is as … Industrial. I was working my way across what is affectionately known as 'The Rust Belt’ after all. Comprised a of towns and cities that formed the backbone of the 19th century engineering boom - Like Detroit, Michigan (once an automotive hub, now a shell of its former self) and Gary, Indiana (contender for scariest place on earth to ride a bicycle). Henry Ford produced the first Model T on this belt and the cities within it were the greatest casualties when the US economic depression hit in 1929.
But let us not judge Niagara by her rusty surroundings. She is a rose amongst thorns. And no matter how many people tell you that the US side isn’t worth a detour, it’s nothing short of spectacular.
Of course, I’m not the only daredevil to make it to Niagara. I’m not a daredevil at all, it seems, when you consider the Niagara thrill seekers of the 20th century. Many of whom decided that encasing oneself in a barrel and throwing oneself into a watery abyss was a good way to pass some time. Evidently there was nothing good on tele that weekend (probably in-between Made in Chelsea seasons). Sixty-three year old Annie Edison Taylor was the first to take the perilous plunge in 1901. She was followed by a succession of others, in barrels, kayaks, or just… diving in. Predictably, many perished, like George Stathakis - although you’ll be pleased to know that the 105 year old pet turtle he took in the barrel with him made it out alive (quite suspicious - I smell a murderous turtle with blood on its… paws).
STATE 25
I’ll confess my week on the rust belt has been a bit of beast, averaging 90 - 110 mile days for the most part to take advantage of good weather and the flat plains. I’m now steaming across the rest of upstate New York, hitting substantially more hills and gearing up to cross into state number 25 tomorrow - Vermont. If we could all pray for the weather Gods to hang on to their winter motherloads for a few more days until I make Maine, I’d be much obliged.
Pics are up on Flickr again, so get your Falltum fill here
See you all next weekend then, once I’ve hit the Atlantic coast, and Maine - gulp!
