Birdwatcher (Zakir Jafry, Oni Press) has been out for a while now, so it's time I re-share a bunch of the art I did for this stellar little science-focused board game. I'll post the art in sets so I'm not spamming you guys with way too many birds all at once, haha.

Left to right, top to bottom:

Displaying male Arfak Astrapia. This species displays by hanging (and swinging!) upside down from a branch with their huge tail pointed upward.

Displaying male Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise. These lemon yellow guys are very shaped, and their display involves slapping the ladies' faces with their weird wiry tails.

Displaying male Standardwing Bird of Paradise. Seriously who made you go all out like this? White flag-like "standards" rise from the shoulders and stand straight up in the air, while their turquoise breast feathers fan out at a crazy angle.

Broad-plumed Lophorina male. This guy is just chilling, not in memey orb mode, but check out that shiny spangled blue breast shield, and the fringed cape feathers hanging off his shoulders (not the wings, which are folded back and barely visible here).

Spangled cotinga! Colorful fella from the Amazon. This month I’m focusing on animals that hang out in the emergent layer of the rainforest, so expect lots of colorful feathers.

Birds of Paradise! This was done as a charity card for the Seattle Children's hospital. Essentially you get the drawing from a child and you're asked to render it out without changing as much as you can. The only thing I added was legs and some tail feathers, I was very careful not to taint Eli's vision.

I got this card for answering an email quickly, lol. I happened to be at a show when the email asking for interested folks went out and answered it in a few minutes, haha. I adored the previous set they'd done like this and was beyond excited.

Hey all, it's Portfolio Day! It never seems to be as big here on tumblr as everywhere else I post my work, but I'd love to see more folks posting some of their favorites to share with everyone now and then.

I'm Lauren, a biologist and scientific illustrator - I do a lot of birds and other natural subjects for publications such as research papers, reports, and outreach materials. But I've also done a handful of board games (most recently Birdwatcher, by Zakir Jafry) and when I find time in between I love to do fanart of my favorite characters!
