Nothing quite like the feathers of the blue bird of paradise, Paradisornis rudolphi, which hangs upside down and makes perhaps the most science-fiction sounds of any animal I know. Every chance I get I like to look at the birds of paradise in our ornithology collections at the Natural History Museum Denmark, and marvel at their beauty.

Bird #25 - the greater bird-of-paradise (LC)
Adult male plumage.
The scientific name of these birds, apoda, means 'legless'! Apparently, when the first skins were sent to Europe they often did not include the wings or feet, leading Europeans to think they floated about with just their feather plumes.
Males do not contribute at all to raising chicks or nesting, so the females judge them solely on their famous display at lekking trees. Then, the female can lay up to seven eggs that she has to all raise by herself.

the glossy-mantled manucode is a member of the bird-of-paradise family. they are found in new guinea, along with surrounding islands. they are known for their iridescent feathers, which are purple and blue under light. they primarily feed on fruits, in particular figs, and arthropods. unlike many birds of paradise, the sexes are very similar; the colorful glossy plumage the species is known for is found in both males and females (females are slightly smaller than males). they aren’t particularly social birds; they are rarely found in small groups, but more frequently found solo or in pairs.

November 2, 2024 - Standardwing Bird-of-Paradise (Semioptera wallacii) Requested by: mystictitan These birds-of-paradise are found in rainforests on the islands of Halmahera, Kasiruta, and Bacan in Indonesia. They eat fruit and arthropods, foraging in small groups and sometimes joining mixed-species flocks. Males perform courtship displays on thin, almost vertical branches near other males and breed with multiple females. Females build the nests and care for the chicks alone, though only one nest has been described, an open cup with a base made from dry leaves built between an orchid and a palm trunk.
