BOOK REVIEW: MEMORIALS by Richard Chizmar
Memorials starts out as a slow burn and builds menacingly into a raging inferno of dread. The novel, set in 1983, is narrated by Billy, who – along with two friends – embarks on a week-long trip to film and document roadside “memorials” for their American Studies class. However, Billy and his friends, Melody and Troy, have more in common than just a college assignment. Each of the three has lost…

Review: Widow's Point by Richard Chizmar and Billy Chizmar
My rating: 3 of 5 stars I suspect I'm going to be the odd-man out on this one for a bit... I'd been looking forward to Widow's Point for a while, having ordered the limited edition hardcover (which is beautiful, by the way), and then bought the Kindle edition for reading. I'm not disappointed in these purchases, mind you, but I also think I may have had my hopes raised a bit too high by all the advance praise. This particular book has a lot of love from so many other readers that I know, interact with, and trust, so this is probably just a case of 'it's not you, it's me.' Richard Chizmar, co-writing here with his son Billy, can most certainly write, there's no doubt about that. Everything I've read of Richard's work leaves me content knowing that he has talent and style to spare. His success in the wake of Gwendy's Button Box, where he shared a co-writing credit with the one and only Stephen King, is well-deserved and much-earned, make no mistake about it. Widow's Point is certainly very well written, but it also treads a heck of a lot of well-worn ground. Thomas Livingston is a famous author who's made his bread writing nonfiction accounts of encounters with the supernatural. His latest endeavor sees him spending a weekend in solitary confinement within the mysterious lighthouse Widow's Point, named such due to the number of lives and ship's lost off the rocky Nova Scotia coast it's situated upon. The lighthouse has enough history to make it an urban legend, and more than its fair share of dead families and curious visitors lying in its shadows. Framed as a found footage narrative (I swear, I've read at least three found footage stories over the last year in various anthologies...), the Chizmar's recount Livingston's weekend by way of audio transcriptions and video description. This gives us an intimate point-of-view and we experience Widow's Peak directly through the eyes and words of Livingston himself as he's physically and psychologically put through his paces over the course of a July weekend. If any of this sounds even the least bit familiar, well, that's because it is. Widow's Point is a capable story with a strong in-your-face narration, but it lacks any shred of originality. If you've read any previous haunted house story, you've pretty well read Widow's Point. You know the beats and you know the encounters, and it all occurs according to spec, each segment coming in right on time like a well-engineered train schedule. This sucker is one trope-heavy novella, and each one gets trotted out with unsurprising regularity in machine-like fashion. There's no surprises to be had, no shocks to the system. By the time I hit the end of the book, it was with a shrug and a mental, "That's it, huh?" At the end of the day, this is a well written ghost story, but it's made hollow by its familiarity. On the other hand, the limited edition hardcover sporting Francois Vaillancourt nearly-monochromatic artwork of skulls in the sky surrounding Widow's Peak is gorgeous and a nice addition to my bookshelf. I certainly cannot complaint about that. View all my reviews

Top New Horror Books in August 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Even the height of summer brings dark nights. From the gory to the eerie, horror brings us cathartic chills and gritty adventure. Here are our most-anticipated horror books coming out in August 2021 …
Billy Summers by Stephen King
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Type: Novel Publisher: Scribner Release date: Aug. 3
Den of Geek says: A new release from horror master Stephen King is always an event. His most recent novel traffics in good and evil, asking how far a mercenary with a personal code is willing to go.
Publisher’s summary: Billy Summers is a man in a room with a gun. He’s a killer for hire and the best in the business. But he’ll do the job only if the target is a truly bad guy. And now Billy wants out. But first there is one last hit. Billy is among the best snipers in the world, a decorated Iraq war vet, a Houdini when it comes to vanishing after the job is done. So what could possibly go wrong?
How about everything.
This spectacular can’t-put-it-down novel is part war story, part love letter to small town America and the people who live there, and it features one of the most compelling and surprising duos in King fiction, who set out to avenge the crimes of an extraordinarily evil man. It’s about love, luck, fate, and a complex hero with one last shot at redemption.
You won’t put this story down, and you won’t forget Billy.
Buy Billy Summers by Stephen King.
Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar
Type: Novel Publisher: Gallery Books Release date: Aug. 17
Den of Geek says: Chizmar is getting rave early reviews, including from Stephen King, who says “it offers both chills and a satisfying conclusion” and “Ray Bradbury’s influence is all over it.”
Publisher’s summary: In the summer of 1988, the mutilated bodies of several missing girls begin to turn up in a small Maryland town. The grisly evidence leads police to the terrifying assumption that a serial killer is on the loose in the quiet suburb. But soon a rumor begins to spread that the evil stalking local teens is not entirely human. Law enforcement, as well as members of the FBI are certain that the killer is a living, breathing madman—and he’s playing games with them. For a once peaceful community trapped in the depths of paranoia and suspicion, it feels like a nightmare that will never end.
Recent college graduate Richard Chizmar returns to his hometown just as a curfew is enacted and a neighborhood watch is formed. In the midst of preparing for his wedding and embarking on a writing career, he soon finds himself thrust into the real-life horror story. Inspired by the terrifying events, Richard writes a personal account of the serial killer’s reign of terror, unaware that these events will continue to haunt him for years to come.
A clever, terrifying, and heartrending work of metafiction, Chasing the Boogeyman is the ultimate marriage between horror fiction and true crime. Chizmar’s “brilliant…absolutely fascinating, totally compelling, and immediately poignant” (C.J. Tudor, New York Timesbestselling author) writing is on full display in this truly unique novel that will haunt you long after you turn the final page.
Buy Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar.
My Heart Is A Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones
Type: Novel Publisher: Gallery / Saga Press Release date: Aug. 31
Den of Geek says: Award-winning author of The Only Good Indians returns to literary horror with a novel in conversation with the slasher genre.
Publisher’s summary: Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.
Jade Daniels is an angry, half-Indian outcast with an abusive father, an absent mother, and an entire town that wants nothing to do with her. She lives in her own world, a world in which protection comes from an unusual source: horror movies…especially the ones where a masked killer seeks revenge on a world that wronged them. And Jade narrates the quirky history of Proofrock as if it is one of those movies. But when blood actually starts to spill into the waters of Indian Lake, she pulls us into her dizzying, encyclopedic mind of blood and masked murderers, and predicts exactly how the plot will unfold.
Yet, even as Jade drags us into her dark fever dream, a surprising and intimate portrait emerges…a portrait of the scared and traumatized little girl beneath the Jason Voorhees mask: angry, yes, but also a girl who easily cries, fiercely loves, and desperately wants a home. A girl whose feelings are too big for her body. My Heart Is a Chainsaw is her story, her homage to horror and revenge and triumph.
Buy My Heart Is A Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones.

October Project IX: The Call of the Old Nightmare Day 31
Widow's Point (2018)
by Richard Chizmar and Billy Chizmar
Author goes to haunted lighthouse and gets ate by said lighthouse, or does he? I liked the build up and the world building to the story, but I didn’t like the last part of it when the author has a mental breakdown due to what is in the lighthouse. I think after watching Unsolved I have been forever changed. Now whenever I read or watch something dealing with a possible haunted investigation, I can help but think that everything would have been okay if Shane had been there to keep everyone chilled. Also only being at these places for an evening or over one night is a good idea too.
Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural (2019)
S6, Ep2. The Haunting Shadows of The St. Augustine Lighthouse
Another haunted lighthouse, but with no one disappearing at the end. This was one of my favorite episodes of Unsolved: Supernatural, so it seemed appropriate to finish this year’s project with it. And it gives today’s post a lighthouse theme.

Billy Chizmar, much like his father, excels in everything he does. He works hard and plays hard and it shows! This up-and-coming writer/screenwriter is clearly one to watch. I have had the honor of reading his stories and reviewing the book he wrote with his dad. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect but was completely thrilled reading Widow’s Point. To say it’s good is putting it mildly. It’s brilliant. His writing and Richards mesh perfectly and it was impossible to tell where one stopped and the other began. If you missed reading works by Billy Chizmar I highly suggest you change that immediately. You will love it! Billy is also a very skilled lacrosse player and played in high school and now in college. He is smart and funny and adores his little brother Noah. I’m very proud to know him and to have him write for my first anthology and now the Ketchum anthology. Thank you Billy. You inspire me and give me faith in the next generation of horror writers! Good luck in all you do!
Please welcome Billy Chizmar to Roadie Notes……………
      1. How old were you when you first wrote your first story?
I’ve been writing stories ever since I could hold a crayon. We regularly find old stories from my toddler years hidden around the house.
  2. How many stories have you written?
I’ve had several stories published in various anthologies and have co-written a novella with my dad.
3. Anything you won’t write about?
I’ll never write about a bad dog, because there’s no such thing.
  4. Tell me about you. Age (if you don’t mind answering), married, kids, do you have another job etc…
I’m 19 and will start my second year at Colby College this fall, where I play lacrosse and am majoring in psychology.
5. What’s your favorite story you have written?
Probably “Widow’s Point” because it was so much fun to trade ideas and drafts back and forth with my dad.
  6. Who or what inspired you to write?
My father, for sure. He surrounded me with books from an young age and really instilled my love for the craft. I grew up with heroes like King and Poe, as opposed to athletes or actors.
  7. What do you like to do for fun?
Fishing and crabbing are my go to past times.
  8. Any traditions you do when you finish a book?
I immediately send an email to my dad with the subject line “can you read this?” every time.
  9. Where do you write? Quiet or music?
I write wherever, preferably outside. Music is a must.
  10. Anything you would change about your writing?
I’d like to be a more patient writer. I get ahead of myself pretty frequently which causes me to jump forward in the plot without allowing it to develop properly. I’m working on it!
  11. What is your dream? Famous writer?
If I could end up anywhere in the writing or film industry, I’d be a happy man.
  12. Where do you live?
Bel Air, Maryland – born and raised.
  13. Pets?
I’ve got three dogs! Boo and Zoeyy are Shepard/Poodle mixes. We’re not sure what our little, fluffy white dog’s breed is, but we’ve ironically named her Cujo.
  14. What’s your favorite thing about writing?
The process of creating a story, a world, is like nothing else. It’s gratifying and terrifying all at once.
15. What is coming next for you?
I’m currently working on expanding a short story I recently finished into a novella or novel. I’ll also be on set of the Widow’s Point film adaptation for most of August!
  16. Where do you get your ideas?
Everywhere I can. Sitting on a bench on the boardwalk of Ocean City, MD often results in witnessing some pretty inspiring (yet strange) interactions!
