Tej Kohli: Profile Of A Technologist
Tej Kohli is a philanthropist who is well known for his worldwide mission to eliminate corneal blindness from poor and underserved communities by 2035. In 2006 he sold a company that he had founded just seven years earlier as part of a high value sale. The company specialised in online payment gateways for high risk sectors and also in the acquisition, turnaround and trade sale of online gaming properties. Since this 2006 liquidity event Tej Kohli has been actively engaged in building the not-for-profit Tej Kohli Foundation.
Tej Kohli is also an impact investor focused on artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnology ventures that have the potential to drive positive human impact. His impact investments include proprietary technologies that have the potential to have a transformation impact in a variety of applications. Ventures backed by Tej Kohli are engaged in activities ranging from resolving the treatment gap that leads to poverty-driven blindness through to solving the logistical challenges of organ donation and even using machine learning to dramatically increase the efficiency of plastics recycling.
Tej is a father to two teenagers and has been married to his wife Wendy for over twenty years. He is a keen esports fan and an unashamed supercar enthusiast. He is also an avid ballroom dancer who has competed in international events. Tej Kohli regularly shares his thoughts and wisdom in a series of #TejTalks blogs and is an active user of social media.
Here we find out more about the colourful technologist…
What is #TejTalks?
Tej Kohli - #TejTalks is where I share my thoughts and also important information about the things that matter to me or which have captured my attention. I blog using Medium and I also post a lot on Twitter and Facebook. I am not that well known and I am not a public figure, so I do not have much of a platform elsewhere. The beauty of place like Medium and to a lesser extent Twitter, is the ability to make unmediated connections with experts.
The Tej Kohli Foundation for example, is entirely depending on forming new partnerships and coalitions all around the world to solve big challenges. So #TejTalks is a great place to zone in onto some of the constitute parts of those challenges or the underlying factors that are causing them, and to connect and share ideas with relevant experts. A huge proportion of corneal blindness for example is a poverty-driven ailment, and so you cannot solve it without also looking at the underlying causes of poverty. Female inequality also plays a big role in poverty blindness, and so recently I have been learning and blogging about that too.
You recently published ‘Rebuilding You: The Philanthropy Handbook’. Why?
Tej Kohli - My own approach to philanthropy has been heaving focused on rebuilding people and communities around the world. And one of the things that I have learned on that journey is that in becoming a philanthropist you cannot simply become a kinder and more benevolent version of yourself. You also need to behave differently, think differently and change your outlook. I wrote ‘Rebuilding You’ as a guide for others who want to use their wealth for good, so that they can avoid some of the common pitfalls and have a greater impact more quickly.
I have organised the ‘Rebuilding You’ handbook into key decision areas. Each area will enable would-be philanthropists to combine some of my experiences with their own to synthesise new ideas about how to define a brand of philanthropy that will best achieve their goals.
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned during your career?
Tej Kohli - I am about to turn 63 and I have led a rollercoaster life. People often tell me that my life story would make a great movie, but I tell them that if it was a it would do badly it because the story would not seem believable! I made a single youthful mistake in 1988 that I have regretted ever since and which I still feel great remorse for. I think what that taught me is that sometimes the important thing is to know what not to do.
At the same time if you want to achieve something you need to aim higher and go further than almost every other person is prepared to go, and if you start young like I did, it is inevitable that you will make some mistakes. I feel bad for young people these days as so much of their lives are recorded and documented online. I counsel my kids and their friends to aim high but also to be very careful as any indiscretion could follow them forever.
But the biggest lesson I think I have learned is that you will always have your critics and not to let them detract from what you are doing. It’s best not to give them the satisfaction of allowing them to diminish who you are and what you are doing. The best thing to do is to simply keep going, keep doing good, keep giving back and keep helping others.
youtube
What for you have been the key moments in your life?
You know my mother is 86 now and if I am anything in life then I owe it to her. She has always been there for me and that consistent love and support has been more important to me than any particular moments, except of course for the birth of my son and daughter. I had my children quite late in life, but my kids are by far the thing that I am most proud of.
In terms of my career, my first job after graduating in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology was installing tachometers. I was installing at a facility owned by Rabocomtel and realised that I could design a process controlled which would significantly increase the efficiency of their facilities. It’s a long story, but ultimately, I was able to pitch the idea to the CEO who placed a big order with the company that I worked for. That gave me my first real affirmation of my desire to become an entrepreneur.
When the company that I launched in 1999 reached $100m of turnover was also a key moment for me too. It affirmed my belief in what was possible, and we quickly expanded to employ hundreds of software developers and began buying and turning around companies too. And obviously when that company was sold in 2006 it was a life changing moment.
You graduated in from the Indian Institute of Technology with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Do you still consider yourself an engineer?
Tej Kohli - Today I would call myself a technologist, but I think that to be an engineer you now need to be a technologist and vice versa. It was 1980 when I graduated in Electrical Engineering and ‘technology’ as we know it today did not really exist. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) remains today one of the top educational institutions in the world and it has become famous for the problem-solving abilities of its engineers.
When the COVID-19 crisis hit in 2020, India found itself with a catastrophic shortage of ventilators, but within weeks engineers at IIT had created a low-cost ventilator that could be manufactured using off-the-shelf parts. They made their design open source so that local manufacturing companies could turn their resources to manufacturing ventilators, which they did. That is an elegant example of engineering and technology coming together.
In 2018 my alma mater conferred their Distinguished Alumnus Award upon me for serving society at large through my work at the Tej Kohli Foundation. That made me proud because part of what we do at the Foundation is to deploy technology to solve human problems.
Who has inspired you most in life?
Tej Kohli - The late Kofi Annan was by far the wisest and most inspirational man that I have ever met. But from a more practical perspective, as obvious as it may sound, I greatly admire Bill Gates. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation approach to philanthropy has set a high standard to which all other philanthropists can aspire. The way that Bill Gates defined very specific objectives and then intensively targeted vast resources into both grassroots activities and also major scientific innovations, has been a big source of learning for me that has continually motivated and inspired me to do even more. Bill Gates achieved so much in business and then used that success to achieve so much for others that like me he has almost had ‘two lives’. His example is a wake-up call for any human who has accumulated wealth to consider how they might use that wealth for the betterment of their fellow human beings.
I am also greatly indebted to Michael Milken. His story resonates strongly with me because Milken got ‘tripped up’ by his prodigious early success, but then made a colossal comeback and focused on using his success to help others. Today Milken is one of the biggest funders of research into prostate cancer, and the results are incredible. In 2004 Fortune Magazine called Milken ‘The Man Who Changed Medicine’. Milken shows that it is possible to move on from past youthful mistakes and rebuild yourself for the betterment of other people.
You have been at the helm of the Tej Kohli Foundation for well over a decade. When did your philanthropic ambitions start?
Tej Kohli - It was my wife Wendy who started off our journey into philanthropy when in 2005 we sponsored a group of disabled children in Costa Rica. By 2005 we knew that a sale of my company was imminent, and we wanted to have something new to put all of our energies into. The group of disabled children that we committed to help had varying levels of disability, and our job was to make interventions that would improve their lives. Some had such severe disability that they would need permanent care for the rest of their lives. At the opposite end of the spectrum, with our support one young girl eventually attended college in the USA.
That same year my wife Wendy launched the ‘Funda Kohli’ project by establishing a series of free canteens in Costa Rica, which is where she is from. The canteens are still operational today more than fifteen years later. They feed hundreds of school age children for free every single day to make sure that they have the nutrition and sustenance that they need to thrive.
But today you are best known for your mission to end corneal blindness by 2035, where did that mission come from?
Tej Kohli - In 2010 I was invited to fund donor corneal transplants at Niramaya Hospital in India. There is no history of blindness in my family and corneal blindness is not something that I had known a huge amount about before then. Nowadays I consider myself something of an expert. I was present in 2010 as the recipient of a corneal transplant that I had funded - a 50-year-old man who had been blind for decades - had his bandages removed. The man was able to see his wife and grown up children for the first time in decades.
That was a life changing moment for him and also for me and was my affirmation that having enjoyed so much rapid success in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, I now wanted to use that success to eliminate corneal blindness. I felt it was my calling.
Another one of the reasons that corneal blindness resonated so strongly with me is because it is at its heart it is a poverty driven ailment. 75% of corneal blindness is either preventable or treatable. But when it is left untreated, it impedes the ability of entire families to become economically successful in communities that are already impoverished. NGOs do not reach a majority of the remote and rural communities in India. In communities that are underserved for healthcare provision due to their remoteness or poverty, there is a huge treatment gap.
The other challenge with corneal blindness, is that because it’s not life threatening, it attracts less attention than some other global health issues. But the social and economic impact of restoring someone’s vision is immense. It changes families forever. That’s why I became determined to make a difference. And by 2015 I was funding so many corneal transplant operations at Niramaya that a bigger facility was needed.
Is that when the Tej Kohli Cornea Institute project was started?
Tej Kohli - The Tej Kohli Cornea Institute in Hyderabad was the biggest project that the Tej Kohli Foundation had ever embarked upon. It opened in late 2015 and by November 2019 it had welcomed more than 223,404 outpatients and completed more than 43,255 surgeries.
People living with corneal blindness or visual impairment in India were often living in total poverty and in some instances could not even afford the train fare to travel to see a doctor, let alone to pay for a complex corneal transplant operation. We treated anyone referred to the Tej Kohli Cornea Institute for free regardless of who they were. It meant that we were able to help people who had been economically ‘shut out’ from the life changing treatment.
There was one girl who was the same age as my daughter whose vision was so poor that she was nearly blind. I was visiting Hyderbad and met her just after she had received her corneal transplant. She gave me a big hug and I couldn’t help thinking how I would feel if this was my daughter. After that I couldn’t stop thinking about how many others like her were still out there. Knowing that I could help them felt like a big responsibility that I wanted to rise to.
The focus of the Tej Kohli Cornea Institute is in India, but you haven’t lived in India for many decades. What is it that keeps your focus on India?
Tej Kohli - ‘First world’ problems are invariably the ones which it would be relatively expensive to solve. By contrast, high rates of poverty mean that many developing countries are plagued by diseases that it would cost the ‘first world’ comparatively tiny sums to control. In 2018 India commenced the world’s largest experiment in Universal healthcare when the Government granted 500 million people the entitlement to free health insurance overnight.
This will mean that those living below the poverty line in India will no longer have to pay for hospital treatments that would until now have pushed them into crippling debts. But whilst on the surface this is a hugely positive step forward, too much optimism entirely ignores the fact that it will still take many decades and billions of dollars to bring all of India’s healthcare systems up to the equivalent standard of that in the West. Until then, highly pervasive treatment gaps will continue to permeate the poorest communities.
My own focus on India as a philanthropist actually has nothing to do with my own heritage. Unfortunately, India is an epicentre of poverty-driven corneal blindness, and so it is the obvious place for us to be in our mission to combat this form of blindness, the vast proportion of which is either avoidable or treatable. But closing the treatment gaps is about more than money – it is also about logistics, resources, education, knowledge, cultural understanding and having a deep reach into communities. Does my heritage help with this? Yes, a little.
youtube
But in 2020 you announced that you were going to shift your focus away from these direct interventions in favour of finding cures. Why?
Tej Kohli – What has always been abundantly clear from the beginning is the sheer magnitude of the task of closing the corneal blindness treatment gap. I have always felt that official data is incomplete and so in reality there could be ten million people in the world living needlessly with corneal blindness. Most of them are in remote and rural communities across many different countries speaking different languages and with different systems in place.
You simply cannot eliminate corneal blindness by relying on transplantation surgery. Transplantation is too expensive, too complex and too inaccessible for most of the people who need it. The only way to eliminate corneal blindness by 2035 is to bring to market a novel solution that is affordable, scalable and accessible in all circumstances. What you need is a solution that can be applied by ophthalmologists or nurses without surgical intervention.
Finding that ‘universal’ solution is not something that we have just embarked upon: we have been working on it for years and today we have our own intellectual property which we have developed ‘in house’ as well as sponsoring the projects of third parties at major institutions. To begin with we tried to synthesise new corneas from yeast and then later from peptides. We were able to create them, but the rejection rate was too high, and neither solution would have removed the need for invasive sutures and expensive surgery.
It took until 2019 before we achieved a breakthrough when we created a proprietary regenerative solution, which in theory, could be applied using a syringe and cause the cornea to ‘regenerate’ and repair itself. Subject to regulatory approvals, this ‘universal solution’ is now years rather than decades away and could be relevant to more than one third of people with corneal blindness.
The “major institution” where you are sponsoring projects, is that Harvard Medical School?
Tej Kohli – Actually the Tej Kohli Cornea Program resides at Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston, which is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. It is Harvard professors from the Department of Ophthalmology who lead the research that we sponsor at Mass. Eye and Ear, but our donations do directly to the hospital and it is they who administer the spending.
I donated $2m in 2019 to support the development of innovative technologies to improve medical diagnoses and treatments of corneal blindness. That money is going toward two major projects, one being similar to our own in-house project, and the other utilising nano string technologies to aid early diagnostics and preventative treatment. The funds are also used to provide seed funding to projects that address unmet medical needs in ophthalmology. In my mind the first $2m is just the start and we will do more together in the future too.
In 2019 we also inaugurated the Tej Kohli Cornea Institute UK Centre of Innovation in the United Kingdom. The Institute is building a research network to bring scientific expertise together and is also harnessing the best of British innovation to bridge the corneal blindness treatment gap in poor communities by awarding grants to UK-based technological and scientific projects. Decisions are made by an advisory board of UK experts in Ophthalmology.
youtube
Recently you returned to your earliest days of feeding children by launching food support programs in the UK. Why?
Tej Kohli - in the Spring of 2020 the world was plunged into a global crisis due to the Coronavirus. The pandemic required an emergency response of immediate interventions to alleviate individual human suffering. We had for a long time been formulating plans for how we could get involved in the mission to combat holiday hunger in the UK. When the crisis hit we had to bring those plans forward and play our part in supporting the local community.
The Tej Kohli Foundation partnered with community groups to create capacity to deliver 100,000 cooked meals each week to any charities or volunteer groups who need more free food to distribute into their local community. We also created the ‘YouCube’ box, a youth-focused food initiative that aims to ‘repackage’ food provision as an off-the-shelf initiative that existing charity and volunteer groups can adopt to combat hunger in their community.
Now the Tej Kohli Foundation aspires to use the organisational memory that has been developed during this period and the deep community connectivity of the scheme to combat ‘holiday hunger’ amongst children.
You also donated $100,000 toward the development of a vaccine for COVID-19, what motivated that?
Tej Kohli - I donated $100,000 of emergency funding to Harvard Medical School researchers based at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital in Boston. They had developed a novel and experimental gene-based vaccine which utilises a harmless ‘Trojan horse’ virus as a carrier to bring a tiny piece of the DNA of SARS-CoVid-2 into a patient’s cells, building a protein that stimulates their immune system to fight future infections. I think it is a promising solution to a major global problem, and I am hopeful that it will prove successful.
youtube
Your ‘Future Bionics’ program is funding 3D-printed bionic arms for young people in the UK. How did you arrive at this project?
Tej Kohli – I am immensely proud of our Future Bionics project. It captures so elegantly what the Tej Kohli Foundation is all about: making direct interventions to improve people’s lives using technology, with a particular focus on younger people with their entire life ahead of them. The project came about when I had lunch with the CEO of the company that make the bionic arms and he told me that a lot of families turn to crowdfunding because they cannot afford to purchase one of the arms for their child, and that most of this crowdfunding fails.
The first arm was delivered to a 10-year-old from Blackburn called Jacob as an early Christmas present. He has set a shining example and is a fine young man who is a great role model to other young people. And since then we are working our way through to provide arms to ten young people to begin with. I hope we can continue the program after that, but we will have to take a view on the cost versus the impact once that the current tranche is completed.
Why do you place so much faith and emphasis into technology?
Tej Kohli – you should never underestimate the role of technology in making the world a better place. We are living through an unprecedented time in human history where a chain reaction of rapid technological development across science and technology is unlocking unprecedented new opportunities to solve major human problems. Technologists can look out across the vista of a hugely rich and fertile landscape of new opportunities to improve human life. Many new and novel solutions are within grasp and simply need to be incubated and ‘proven’ to stimulate their widespread adoption.
Many technologists and entrepreneurs have built successful commercial enterprises or pioneered new technology solutions before. It’s my belief that this expertise is absolutely critical for unlocking the potential of these new and frontier technologies in a way that can have an exponential global impact in terms of solving human problems and improving human life.
I have long been fascinated by deep tech and new frontier technologies. When I started my payment gateways company in Costa Rica in 1999 we were figuring out frontier technologies and combining them to build brand solutions and applications. By the time that I left in 2006 my company employed armies of software developers. And this experience as a technologist is now also part of the DNA of my objectives and ambitions as a philanthropist.
youtube
It was Peter Thiel who noted that “We wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters”. Is there a risk that technology will not deliver in the ways that you expect?
Tej Kohli - My real point is that we are now at a watershed moment where the opportunity is to innovate solutions that could eliminate specific areas of human suffering entirely, rather than merely alleviating them. I strongly believe that AI and ‘humanitarian robotics’ have the potential to drive innovations which will alleviate human suffering and hardship, both directly and indirectly. I also believe that humanitarian efforts the world over will be greatly advanced by these emerging technologies as they continue their exponential growth.
That’s why earlier this year I established a new incubator to back scientific projects and commercial ventures that were targeting solutions to corneal blindness, with the caveat that those solutions must be affordable, scalable and accessible in the world’s poorest countries.
You have predicted that artificial intelligence could become a $150 trillion economy within five years, which is ten times more than the current combined output of India and China?
Tej Kohli - Artificial intelligence, and also biotechnology for that matter, are both frontier technologies that are locked into an exponential growth trajectory. The cost of deciphering the human genome has dropped from $3 billion in 2001, to about $1,000 today and what took many months ten years ago can now be done in less than one hour.
I believe that AI will be so manifest within all aspects of life, and that the applications are so broad, that the AI economy will worth four times that of the global Internet economy, which is today worth approximately $50 trillion. AI is also already transforming developing countries. In Nepal, machine learning has been utilised to map and prioritize reconstruction needs after earthquakes. In Africa AI tutors are helping young students to catch up on coursework. NGOs and humanitarian aid agencies are using big data analytics to optimise the delivery of supplies for refugees fleeing conflict and other hardships. And in India rural farmers are being encouraged to use AI to improve crop yields and boost profits.
Technological innovations like these bring us much closer to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on issues like eradicating poverty, ending health-care inequality, increasing access to schooling, and combating global warming. And yet the world is only just scratching the surface of what these new technologies could do for human progress.
Your Kohli Ventures investment vehicle focuses on impact investment. Where does philanthropy end and impact investment begin?
Tej Kohli – That’s a good question. Impact investment looks at the double bottom line of profit and social impact. Philanthropy is a good way to spend wealth, but somewhere along the line you need to first generate that wealth. So why not, when the circumstances are right, try to do both at the same time? Take for example Detraxi, a Florida-based biotech company that I wholly own. It’s a commercial venture but could have a significant humanitarian impact.
More than 100,800 solid organ transplants are performed each year worldwide according to the World Health Organisation. Eight lives can potentially be saved by just one organ donor. Demand far outstrips supply, yet thousands of organs get discarded every single year though wastage due to the practical difficulties of preserving and transporting organs. Imagine if you could solve that problem, it would be a good business that would also save thousands of lives? Well that is what we are trying to do by bringing the Detraxi solution to the market.
But which is more important, philanthropy or impact investment?
Tej Kohli - It was Sir Ronald Cohen who said that “the world must change but we cannot change it by throwing money at old ideas that no longer work. To change the world, we must change how we do business, starting with where and when we invest our money”. Can you imagine a world where every investment decision made by every institution also weighed up the human or social impact of that investment? The consequences would be immense.
Worldwide impact investment is currently was worth around $715 billion in 2018, but the International Finance Corporation estimates that based on current demand from investors’ total demand is nearer to $26 trillion, which is fifty times larger. Impact investing already has the power to solve issues that are often beyond governments. And I am convinced that impact investing is one of the best ways of funding the technology-led changes that the world urgently needs in order to solve some of our biggest challenges.
What have been your favourite impact investments so far?
Tej Kohli – my impact investment portfolio is doing very well indeed, but I deliberately do not disclose my investments since having my name associated can eb a hinderance. And anyway, the focus should be the founders and entrepreneurs at those venture, not on me. One of the largest investments I have made was in 2019 when I committed $100m into the Rewired robotics-focused venture studio ‘with a humanitarian bent’.
Rewired is a Switzerland based organisation, so I do not have any direct influence over what they invest in and their portfolio is also a tightly guarded secret. But based on the Rewired investments that are already in the public domain, one of my favourites is Aromyx based in Silicon Valley. Aromyx was originally initiated by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The company is creating new modalities of data that have the potential to be disruptive across many sectors and applications. In 2019 Aromyx completed a large-scale study with one of the world’s largest chemical companies with a view to deploying Aromyx into the recycling process to improve plastics recycling rates by over 90%.
Other investments publicised by Rewired include Seldon, which is at the heart of accelerating the adoption of machine learning to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems. There is also Raptor Maps, which was founded by MIT Engineers and makes it simple and affordable for solar companies to adopt drone technology as a tool to increase performance. Open Bionics is enhancing the lives of all humans everywhere with its next generation of 3D-printed ‘bionic’ prosthetics. And Elementary Robotics is re-engineering automation intelligence through its deep learning artificial intelligence software.
You have said before that you believe your children, who are teenagers, could live to be at least 125 years old. What will the world be like by 2125?
Tej Kohli - If I look at how the world has changed since I graduated in 1980, and given the acceleration of technological and human progress, I think it’s impossible to imagine the world in 2125. Thanks to economic growth the world is already on track to end extreme poverty by 2030, so perhaps the next 100 years of human history will see humanity unlocking the latent potential that has always been restrained by global inequality.
Of course, there are still major human challenges such as over population, sustainability and climate change that need dealing with. But even during the next decade AI will change every aspect of our lives. So by 2125 I am optimistic that technology will have unlocked even more solutions to these major global challenges.
Time will tell. What I am certain is that the opportunity is right in front of us, and it is for all of us to master it for the betterment of all of humanity.

Author: liv-andletdie Rating: Teen and up Pairing: TP Zelink Modern AU Notes: Link is a vet at Ordon Veterinary surgery. Zelda is an Aristocrat with a dog who is sick… surprisingly often. Though nothing seems to be wrong with them

Chapter 7: The Reunion
Days at the surgery were, in a word, tedious. Depending on the time the building could be flooded with a never ending stream of patients. Cats, dogs, mice, hamsters, birds, gerbils, even reptiles were all frequent visitors to the small country clinic. And as such this made work very difficult for the small team of veterinarians who worked there. Some days it would a be a challenge to get everyone seen and make it through the day without cat scratches or pecks from annoyed parrots.
And then you had some days where it seemed like nothing happened, like the goddesses had met up for tea and decided that,“No, Ordon shall not face any great medical disaster with its animals today,” and given everyone the day off. Days where the only people to enter the building were delivery men and staff returning from their lunch break.
Link hated the quiet days.
He’d never normally hated them. Sure, he used to get a little restless with nothing to do, but he’d never go so far as to say he hated them. Mild dislike yes, but never hate.
But then, he supposed, he’d never normally had the need to distract himself as much.
Every free second was spent thinking about Her. The way she walked, the way she talked, the perfect curl of her smile, the dazzling blue of her eyes! He’d half expected himself to be over her by now. Iit had been four months since Zelda Harkinian was last in town, and yet his every waking moment was devoted to wondering about her, and wondering if she was thinking about him too.
He wanted to blame Rusl. The elder vet had put that ridiculous mantra in his head, There’s always a chance, even if that chance grew less and less with each turn of the minute hand that he was currently staring at.
Link was sitting in the waiting room, his white coat thrown over one of the chairs as he fixed his eye on the clock. The monotonous ticking marked the slow march of the day. Half past four, only three and a half hours left to go. In the corner of the room Ilia sat at her desk, methodically reading through her coursework, the sound of paper turning breezed through the air in rhythm with the never ending thud of the clock. It would have been almost peaceful if it hadn’t been so warm.
“I thought you had a summer break?” Link asked, his voice shattering the fragile silence of the waiting room. He watched Ilia jump, accidentally flinging her pen up in the air. She scrambled to try and catch it, wincing as it hit of the rim of her mug and fell to the floor.
“I do,” she huffed, leaning down to rescue her pen. “But there’s nothing wrong with trying to keep my mind sharp. Better than just sitting around in this heat”
Summers in Ordon were known for their warmth. A damp humid air from Faron rolling across the winds, only made worse by the unrelenting sun up above. The storms offered little respite from the omnipresent heat, only really clearing the air for a day or two until the Faron winds choked them once more.
“I don’t know how you can concentrate,” he muttered, tugging at the collar of his shirt. He’d already unbuttoned the top two buttons, unbuttoning the third would just make him look silly. Well… sillier than he already did. The heat had no doubt turned his cheeks and ears bright pink.
“I can’t,” Ilia sighed. A soft thud indicated that she’d shut her book, apparently giving up on studying for the time being. Link would have laughed if he didn’t feel so lethargic, doing nothing was exhausting. At least I don’t live in Gerudo, he thought as he wiped a hand across his brow, I don’t think I could handle this kinda heat all year round. The Gerudo desert would be unbearable right now, but maybe Castleton would be better.
He wondered how hot it got in Castleton. Would the pavements sizzle? Would the smell of exhaust hang heavy in the air? Would people flock to the park in their lunch breaks? Would Zelda’s office have functioning AC?
Zelda… how was she dealing with the summer heat?
Tipping his head back to stare at the ceiling, Link let out a mournful sigh, all air leaving his lungs in a defeated rush. He was doing it again, thinking about her. He needed to stop otherwise he was going to drive himself mad. Zelda was gone and there was nothing he could do to change that.
“What’cha thinkin bout?” Ilia mumbled, her voice pulling him from his thoughts. He turned his head to look at her, taking in the way she slumped over the desk, her cheek resting in her palm while she fanned herself with a pamphlet on, what looked like, deworming cats and dogs.
“Nothin,” he lied, eyes turning back to the clock on the wall. Four fortyfive. How has it only been fifteen minutes?
“You’re not thinking about Zelda again are you?” Ilia sighed softly, the arm holding her makeshift fan landing against the desk. She looked as tired as he felt, shoulders sagging and eyes drooping. Even the curl of her hair seemed to have given up the ghost as it hung against her neck.
“Why would I be thinking about Zelda?” he scoffed, trying not to choke on his sarcasm.
“Because you’ve got the biggest crush on her in the history of Hyrule,” Ilia huffed. It wasn’t a secret. At this point practically everyone in Ordon knew of Link’s feelings towards the brunette heiress. They’d all agreed it was a damn shame to see him so heartsick, some even going as far as to call it cruel. Link disagreed with that; afterall, it wasn’t Zelda’s fault that he’d fallen for her as hard as he had. “Honestly Link...it’s been months. I don’t th-”
“I know,” He cut in, wincing at the acid in his tone. “I’m sorry, Ilia… I just… I know it’s been ...I can’t stop wondering...” Where would I be if she’d never left?
Ilia pushed herself back in her chair, her bottom lip pulled between her teeth. “I know,” she sighed, fingers tugging at the hem of her T-shirt. “I know, Link, I do. But maybe it is time to move on. Get out there, meet someone new”
Link sighed. She was only trying to help, he knew that, but the idea of going out and trying to find someone else to fall for… it all felt rather empty. Though he couldn’t bring himself to admit this to Ila. He saw the way she looked at him, worry causing her shoulders to go tense, a false smile always plastered to her lips. She just wanted him to be happy.
Closing his eyes, Link let his head fall back against the chair. All energy leaving from his body with a deep and tired sigh. “Maybe it is,” he murmured, trying not to notice how heavy Ilia’s silence felt now.
Quiet filled the air once more, the repeated ticking of the clock seeping into the spaces left by the absence of conversation. Outside the sun beat down against the dried earth filling the room with a blazing heat. Not for the first time that day, Link wondered if this was what the evil realm was like.
His wondering was halted when Ilia gave a loud sigh from across the room, throwing her makeshift fan at the desk with a ferocity that he’d never seen from her before. “How does Rusl do it?!” She cried, red faced from exertion.
Rusl was one of the lucky few who rarely seemed affected by the heat. Every year the Faron winds would blow and every year the elder vet appeared to ignore them. It was one of the great unsolved mysteries in the surgery as to how he managed to accomplish such a feat (along with “who’s sandwich is that in the fridge?” and “why are there never any gummy worms in the vending machine”) Link’s money was on the theory that Rusl was part Goron and was therefore used to the heat, Ilia didn’t seem to agree.
“You know my theory,” he sighed running a hand through his hair.
Ilia ignored him, pushing herself away from the desk. “I’m gonna go find a fan,” she declared “Watch the desk for me? I doubt anyone’s gonna show up but, y'know, just in case.”
Link gave a small nod of his head, watching as Ilia fled down the staff corridor. With a sigh he pushed himself from his seat, grimacing at the feel of sweat rolling down his spine.
The desk was placed right in front of the door, open and vulnerable to the blistering sun. No wonder Ilia was so uncomfortable, he thought reaching a hand up to tug at his collar. It was much warmer in this part of the room. He hoped she’d be back soon as he dropped into her chair, he didn’t think he could stand sitting in the sun for too long.
Now I just need to find something to do.
There was only three hours left of work and Link doubted that anyone would show up in that time. Five pm wasn’t exactly their most active hour at the best of times, let alone on days where nothing happened. Running a hand through his hair, Link searched the desk for something to do. It would be better to keep busy he reasoned as he rifled through the drawers, maybe he’d find something interesting?
His heart sank at the sight of paper, bills, and a bag of hard candy that had gone sticky. Nothing he could use to entertain himself! Well… he could make a paper airplane? It had been years since he’d last made one but he was sure he could figure it out if he had enough time. But then again… Ilia probably needed the paper for something, he couldn’t just use it all up without asking.
Resigned to boredom, Link gave the drawer a sharp kick. It made an almighty thud as it collided with the desk, slamming shut and then opening again from the force. He could feel his frustration grow the longer he sat in the sun. It seemed that everything was going wrong, he couldn’t even kick a drawer back into place without having that backfire!
Link debated just leaving the drawer open. If it didn’t want to close that wasn’t his problem, and there was no way he was going to lower himself to the level of disobedient furniture! He wasn’t going to fight with a desk, he was not! He refused! Why should he get down on his knees to close a stubborn drawer when a kick would have sufficed? It was unnatural, the desk was getting ideas above its station if it thought it could treat him this way.
I’m going mad, he thought sliding to his knees under the desk. He pulled the drawer open fully to inspect it, frowning at the sight of the sticky candies littered against the bills and papers. Suddenly every complaint Ilia had ever made about ants made sense, if this was how she stored her sweets no wonder she was popular with the insects. Swallowing his discomfort, Link began sweeping the candies back into their bag. He really needed to have a word with Ilia about how she organised her desk drawers.
“Hello?” A voice called out, musical, romantic, and achingly familiar. “Is there anyone there?”
Link jumped, electricity arcing through his body with every word that passed the strangers lips. Power charged through his legs and he rushed to stand up, the stubborn drawer and the disgusting candy all but forgotten to his frantic mind. Pushing himself upwards with all his might, Link tried to hold back a yelp as his head cracked against the underside of the desk.
Smooth one, Wolfe, he thought, a hand pressed against the steadily growing lump on his scalp, his eyes shut tight at the pain. From the otherside of the desk he heard the voice again, beautiful and soft and tainted with worry. “Oh my goodness! Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” Link breathed, standing up slowly this time to preserve his remaining brain cells. “My dignity took the worst blow.”
The laugh that followed was nothing less than magic, a pure symphony. Wonderful lilting notes hung in the air around him as he straightened, soothing his injuries and his pride. He could listen to that laugh all day and never get tired of it. He eased his eyes open, trying to find the source of such an enchanting giggle, and his heart stopped.
He knew the voice was familiar, why it caused such a powerful reaction in him. He’d heard it before, he’d listened to it in his dreams, he’d spent months replaying the last words she’d ever said to him. He’d recognize her voice anywhere.
She stood in front of him, brown hair piled in a messy bun at the back of her head, her face and neck flushed pink with the summer heat. At her side sat a large husky.
Zelda was back.
“H-hi,” he gasped, suddenly lost for breath. It felt like all the air in the world had vanished, leaving him floundering like a fish out of water.
“Hi,” she sighed, a heart stopping smile curling over her lips. Screw suffocating, he felt like he was drowning! This couldn’t be real, there was no way! The heat had finally gotten to him, he’d hit his head to hard, he’d fallen asleep and this was all just a dream.
“How have you been, Link?” She asked and he wanted to faint. She was here, right in front of him!
“Swell,” he lied. “Just...great.” He could feel his cheeks begin to ache from how wide he was smiling. “A-and you? How’ve you been?”
“I’ve been good,” She said, nodding a little too enthusiastically. “Busy...work’s been a little frantic”
“Yeah,” he breathed lamely. Why was it so difficult to talk around her? She was just a person it shouldn’t be so hard to just open his mouth and make conversation like a normal person! Comeon, Link. Think! get back on track. “What uhh..what brings you here? Is Naru okay? What’s up?” Perfect.
“Oh! No, she’s...she’s fine.” Zelda started, her eyes flashing quickly to the Husky at her feet. Naru sat on the ground, her tongue lolling out of her mouth as she panted through the heat. “She’s good there’s nothing wrong with her. I just thought that...it’d be a good idea to get her checked over just in case. I mean what with the… heat…” Zelda trailed off, lifting a hand to pull at the messy bun at the back of her neck. She looked… nervous? “I-I can come back later if now’s not a good time”
Link gave the room a quick glance. He took in the still chairs resting in the sunshine, the gentle and never ending tick-tocking of the clock, the fine dust motes floating in the air around them illuminated only briefly before fading away again. It was utterly devoid of life, save for the three of them. Ilia hadn’t even returned yet.
“Now’s fine,” He practically cried as he moved away from behind the desk. “Now’s a great time. Examination room three is open, I’ll take you in there…” The double entendre fell from his lips I’ll take you in examination room three, come on, Link be subtle at least! “I didn’t mean like… I’ll just show you the way”
Link wasn’t sure but he thought he saw a blush rise across Zelda’s cheeks, the already pink skin turning rosy as he moved past her towards the chairs to collect his coat. He’d rather not wear it in such warm weather, but it was always best to appear professional. Biting back a grimace he tugged it over his shoulders before ushering Zelda towards the small examination room.
Pushing open the door Link revealed the modest space. A long metal table took up most of the room, behind it sat a series of cabinets, the tops littered with jars filled with cotton and boxes of latex gloves. A small sink sat at the furthest end from the door, a small trash can placed beneath it. An old computer sat in the corner, it’s screen lighting up as Link pushed at keys to wake it up. With one hand he directed Zelda to sit in the only chair in the room whilst he pulled up a small plastic stool.
“Right, so, just a couple of routine questions,” He started, pulling up Naru’s medical charts.
“Lay them on me,” Zelda smirked, making herself comfortable in her seat. Naru curled around her legs, the strange and unfamiliar environment making her feel anxious.
“Have there been any changes to her eating or drinking habits?”
“No.”
“Good, any weight gain or-”
A sharp howl cut through the air, halting Link in his tracks. He saw Zelda flash him an apologetic look as she reached down to try and calm the animal. “I’m sorry, I know it’s impolite but I gotta ask,” Link continued, earning a smile from Zelda that made his chest feel tight. Ignoring the feeling he asked again, “Any weight gain or loss?”
“No,” she giggled, her hand scratching behind Naru’s ears.
“She up to date on her vaccines?”
“Yes, she got her boosters just last month.”
“Any coughing or Diarrhea?”
“No, thank goodness.”
“Balance issues?”
“Steady as a rock.”
“Excellent, let’s get her up on the table.”
Naru was not a fan of being lifted it seemed as Link wrapped his arms under her. She squirmed in his grasp, letting out another howl as she did so. Zelda stood to the side, muttering apologies and assurances that normally she’s much more well behaved, offering a hand to help calm or distract the wriggling canine. Eventually the two got her on the table, Naru letting out an indignant whine as her claws made contact with the cool steel surface.
Link began with checking her vitals, starting with her pulse and respiration rate before moving onto her temperature (and apologising profusely while he did so) all the while rolling back and forth on his stool between the computer and Naru.
“Vital signs are good,” he murmured half to himself as he stared at the screen. He could hear Zelda behind him blow kisses to her furry friend, the mental image causing him to smile. How was it that she was able to make him feel so happy with the simplest of actions?
Rolling back to the husky, Link started to conduct his physical examination. Naru seemed calmer than she had before, probably soothed by Zelda’s kisses and pats. He watched as she tilted her chin skyward, bright blue eyes sliding shut in pleasure as Zelda scratched at her neck, her tail creating a steady drumbeat against the table.
“I take it she ain’t a huge fan of vets,” he joked, reaching his own hands forward to press against Naru’s abdomen.
“Just the examination rooms,” Zelda confirmed as she pulled her hands back to her lap. “This is the fastest I’ve gotten her to calm down though, there must be something in the room that’s putting her at ease.”
“Could be the wallpaper?” Link snorted jerking his head towards the garish blue and green diagonal stripes that decorated the room. Zelda rolled her eyes at him but she laughed, rewarding him with another heart stopping smile.
Swallowing he turned back to the task at hand. Pulling a stethoscope from the wall behind him, he began listening to Naru’s heart and breathing. She gave a quick twitch at the feel of cold metal against her ribs, blue eyes snapping open to glare at him silently. shrugging his shoulders in a half hearted apology, Link couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled up at his throat.
Across from him, Zelda sat back in her chair. She’d taken the messy bun out of her hair, running through the strands with her fingers to tidy them. Naru’s check up was forgotten as he watched her, nimble fingers pulling the hair into a perfect plait, a serene expression on her face.
He knew he’d missed her, the entirety of Ordon knew that he’d missed her! He’d thought about nothing but her for the past four months, just praying he’d get the chance to see her one last time. Having her here, now, in front of him, he hadn’t realized how desperate he’d been for that prayer to be answered.
“It’s nice to see you again,” he said, so quiet he wasn’t even sure that he’d said the words out loud. Zelda’s eyes turned towards him, the beginnings of a blush painting her cheeks and ears a light pink.
“Well…” she swallowed, hands dropping to her lap. He watched as she clutched at the fabric of her skirt, her knuckles going a bright white. She tilted her head towards Naru on the table. “She missed you”
“I wasn’t talking to the dog.”
Zelda's eyes grew wide, cheeks turning scarlet and lips parting in a quiet, surprised gasp as she lifted her eyes to his. All air seemed to rush from her lungs and for a moment Link was scared that she was going to faint or curse him out. But instead she seemed to gather herself, eyelashes fluttering as she searched for something to focus on that wasn’t him. Her tongue darted out to wet her lips and Link felt his chest grow hot.
“It’s nice to see you again too,” She’d gone bright red, her nerves masterfully hidden as she gazed up at him through her lashes. The room seemed to grow warmer but he couldn’t bring himself to care, her words were echoing around his head like the chimes of a cymbal. Maybe… just maybe, she’d missed him as much as had missed her?
Naru’s sharp, annoyed, howl wrang through the air, shattering the moment and drawing his attention back to her and the stethoscope still pressed against her ribs. Fighting back the rising flush of embarrassment he felt at being called out by a husky, Link quickly returned to his work as he examined her eyes, teeth, and ears. Once he was satisfied that she was alright, Link pulled his stool over the computer.
“Naru looks fine,” he murmured, hands moving across the keys. “She’s recovered well from that cold she had a couple months back, so that’s good. As for dealing with the heat I’d recommend just brushing her a whole lot to get rid of any excess fur, but don’t trim her. Also, if you’ve got a pond in your garden she might like to swim in that to keep cool? A kiddie pool would also work. I actually knew a guy who’d freeze fruit for his dog so she could play with it. Just took an old ice cream tub and filled with water with an apple in it”
“Thank you,Link - uh Doctor Wolfe.” He watched, out of the corner of his eye, as she showered Naru with affection. Pressing loving kisses against her forehead and gentle scratches under her chin and ears.
“Just doing my job,” he sighed, as he shut the computer down. She turned to him, something shining in her royal blue eyes that made him weak at the knees. It really was good to see her again. “I’ll walk you back to the desk.”
<><><>
The lowering sun cast a deep orange light over the waiting room. Tall shadows of the trees outside curled over the room through the windows like the cracks in a vase. The clock continued it’s resolute march and somewhere nearby an electric fan whirred, pulling and pushing the heavy air around the space.
“How long have you been back in Ordon?” Link asked, holding the door open for Zelda and Naru to walk past. Her perfume tickled his nose as she got close, lingering in the back of his throat. The scent of fresh roses following in the air after her.
“Not long, I just got back really,” she said, pulling her braid over her shoulder. “I’ve not even been up to the estate yet, I just... came straight here.”
“Worried about Naru?”
“No...I…” She trailed off, a hand coming up to tug on her braid, a nervous smile curling over her lips. “I just wanted to come here first”
It was impossible to hold back the goofy, idiotic, grin that plastered itself across his face. Even the most miserable of people would have failed when faced with the knowledge that Zelda Harkinian had wanted to get to the surgery before anything else. He’d managed to compose himself earlier when she had said that it was nice to see him again, but she was quickly breaking down his defences. He’d be a dribbling pile of nerves by the time she left and all she had to do was smile at him!
Turning towards the desk, in an attempt to at least hide his grin, Link began drawing up her bill. The fan that Ilia had placed on the desk only worked to increase his discomfort, blowing hot air directly into his face as he tried to work. The secretary herself, however, was nowhere to be seen. A small yellow note stuck to the computer monitor was the only clue to her whereabouts.
Uli’s stuck at the bakery, Rusl’s at the ranch. I had to take Colin to cricket club, desk is all yours. -Ilia x P.s. don’t root around my stuff!
Suppressing the urge to rub his eyes, he fished a pen out of the pot she kept there to write his reply.
Clean your candy. Ants love it, I don’t. -L P.s. the fan is useless
“That’s forty five ruppees for the consultation. No other charge because she’s a perfectly healthy dog.” He held the card reader out towards Zelda, looking away as she typed in her pin. He could hear the sound of Naru’s tail thumping against the floor in time with the clock on the wall in the otherwise silent room.
“How long are you in Ordon for?” he asked, pulling back the reader as it began to print the receipt. He’d been aiming to break the silence before it got too daunting, to make casual conversation like two friends do. And yet his mind had leapt to the first question he’d wanted to ask. He felt the tops of his ears grow warm as he handed her card back to her. No turning back now.
“I’m here for a month,” she explained, seemingly not noticing his sudden nerves. She tucked her card back into her purse. “I’m taking a break from work for a little bit.”
“Cool, cool.” Now what? He’d hit a dead end. Cool wasn’t a way to continue a conversation, nor a way to end one properly. He couldn’t just stop talking, but then what should he say? You’re gonna love the weather? No, he doubted anyone could love this weather. She might take it as sarcastic, but what if she didn’t? Then he’d have to explain himself and that would be awkward. Not to mention that it was a pessimistic statement to make for no reason! Talking about the weather was off the table. Any plans? might be a good choice. Unless she thought he was asking her out… would that be such a bad thing? He could ask her out right now! It’d be easy, just say Well if you’re here for a month do you wanna hang out sometime? There was nothing stopping him! That’s it! Link decided I’m going to ask her out.
“We might see each other around.”
You coward.
“We might,.” She agreed, pulling her hand bag up higher to her shoulder. He couldn’t tell, and he didn’t want to assume anything but… she seemed disappointed. “It was nice seeing you again.”
“You too,” idiot! idiot! idiot! “Take care.” By Farore, he was stupid! Saying goodbye to her now? Well she probably had somewhere to be, shopping to do or something. There’d been no one at the estate so she’d need to air it out and clean the sheets maybe. He couldn’t keep her here any longer than he already had. He was a veterinarian, he’d done his job, she had no reason to stick around.
“I will,” She smiled, taking a step backwards towards the door. She was almost hesitant.
Realistically, when am I gonna run into her again? I don’t even have her number.
“Uh, wait...”
She stopped. Bright, royal blue, eyes staring at him. The whole situation was vaguely familiar, only this time they were standing in a sweltering waiting room instead of her driveway under freezing cold rain. Back then, all he’d wanted was for her to stay. That wasn’t an issue now, she was staying albeit only for a few weeks. But a few weeks would have to be enough time.
“Yes?”
Screw half-cooked Ramen. It was now or never.
“Would you… I mean it’s… there’s a… do you wanna get coffee sometime?” He choked. He’d envisioned this moment before, except he hadn’t been stumbling over his words and he’d swept her off of her feet in a display so romantic that cheesy romcom movies would look tame in comparison. But he’d done it now, for better or worse. He couldn’t even look at her, his eyes staring at the pen he’d left lying out on the desk. She was probably going to say no, maybe she’d let him down gently if he was lucky.
“I’d love to.”
Wait, what? His heart skipped a beat in his chest. Had she just… she’d said… she wanted too…
“Great. Great! I’ll… uhh give you my number,” He began patting down his pockets in a frenzy, searching desperately for his phone. His mind and heart still reeling from the revelation that Zelda-Goddess-Damned-Harkinian had just said yes to going on a date with him. Only one problem remained… his phone was charging in the break room. Resisting the urge to slam his head against the desk he continued. “I don’t...I don’t have my phone with me. Uhh I could run back and-”
Zelda reached forward faster than he could comprehend, a hand expertly wrapping around his forearm, keeping him still as she pushed up his shirt sleeve. He watched breathless as she grabbed the pen from the desk and began writing on his skin in short, elegant, cursive.
0145 712598 - Miss Harkinian x
“You’ve got my number,” She breathed, a coquettish grin pulling at her lips. Link felt faint at the sight of her smile and the feel of her hand on his arm, her thumb tracing small circles over his skin.
“I do,” He said dumbly, his heart kicking back into gear at the realization. “I have your number so I’ll call you and then we can arrange something.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Her smile is gonna be the death of me, he thought as she pulled away. But damn, what a way to go. Zelda’s hand dropped from his arm, her attention drawn towards Naru as she gave a low howl.
“I gotta get her home,” Zelda giggled, leaning down to pat her husky on the nose. “I’ll hear from you later?”
“Absolutely,” He gasped, nodding his head so fast he was sure he was going to do himself an injury. “You’ll hear from me later, 100%.”
“Goodbye, Link,” she sighed, her lip caught between her teeth in a way that made his heart race.
“Bye, Zelda.
And just like that she was gone, walking out of the door, her husky in tow. He watched her till he couldn’t see her anymore, till she was nothing but a spec on the horizon, till the setting sun began to shine in his eyes and the clock struck the hour. Pushing away from the desk, he ran to the break room with all the power he could muster.
His phone was right where he’d left it, plugged in next to the toaster of all things. He practically ripped it from the wall in his haste. Adrenaline was rushing through his veins as he punched her number in, causing his whole body to shake with anticipation. Pressing the phone against his ear he waited, counting the rings until she picked up.
Ring ring
Ring ring
Ring ring
It was torture. Two seconds felt like five hours. He couldn’t stop moving, constantly tapping his feet against the floor. He thought he was going to explode until he heard her voice, sweet and melodious, echo down the phone line.
“Hello, Zelda Harkinian speaking. How can I help you?”
“Hi, yeah, I’m Doctor Link Wolfe with the Ordon veterinary surgery. I was wondering if you were free this friday?”

The Popularity Of Cloud Computing, As Reported By Google Trends
Source: Researchgate - Popularity-of-Cloud-Computing-as-reported-by-Google-trends
If you utilize a computer or mobile device reception or at work, you almost certainly use some sort of cloud computing a day. It might be some popular applications like Gmail, Dropbox, Google spreadsheets, or platforms like Salesforce and familiar others. According to a recent survey, 92% of organizations use the cloud today while others decide to use it more often in the coming years.
The term ‘cloud computing’ also refers to the technology that creates the cloud work. This includes advanced IT like server systems, OS software, networking, and others core competent technologies to make it more valuable to user experience.
The industry says Y - ‘AAS’!
In computing, we call it IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service), PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service), and SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) the core models on which the cloud platform is built. Many are confused with their applications in the industries but it has an enormous impact on the cloud applications and their behavior. Despite the catch, the industry finds it difficult to differentiate the trio with its functionality. To have a better understanding of each we are going to brief on each.
SaaS (Software-as-a-Service)
The Global SaaS market occupies a hefty share of 99 bn USD and is estimated to grow at the rate of 11% CGAR, during the forecast period 2021-2025. The hype around SaaS is solely due to its diverse usage and how frequently it’s used as a definitive cloud tool.
SaaS—also referred to as cloud-based software or cloud applications—is application software that’s hosted within the cloud which you access and use via an internet browser, a fanatical desktop client, or an API that integrates together with your desktop or mobile OS. In most cases, SaaS users pay a monthly or annual subscription fee; some may offer ‘pay-as-you-go’ pricing that supported your actual usage.
PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service)
Today, PaaS is usually built around containers, a virtualized compute model one step far away from virtual servers. Containers virtualize the OS, enabling developers to package the appliance with only the OS services it must run on any platform, without modification, and without need for middle-ware.
With PaaS, the cloud provider hosts everything—servers, networks, storage, operating system software, middleware, databases—at their data center. Developers simply pick from a menu to ‘spin up’ servers and environments they need to run, build, test, deploy, maintain, update, and scale applications.
Red Hat OpenShift is a popular PaaS built around Docker containers and Kubernetes, an open-source container orchestration solution that automates deployment, scaling, load balancing, and more for container-based applications.
IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
Lets tally the statements with some statistics for backup. As per the global forecast reports, the IaaS market will grow by 136.21 bn USD during 2021-2025, further, the growth monitor indicates it to be staggering at a CAGR of 27% during the forecast period.
IaaS provides on-demand access to fundamental computing resources–physical and virtual servers, networking, and storage—over the internet on a pay-as-you-go basis. IaaS enables end-users to scale and shrink resources on an as-needed basis, reducing the need for high, up-front capital expenditures or unnecessary on-premises or ‘owned’ infrastructure and for overbuying resources to accommodate periodic spikes in usage.
In contrast to SaaS and PaaS (and even newer PaaS computing models such as containers and serverless), IaaS provides the users with the lowest-level control of computing resources in the cloud.
IaaS was the most popular cloud computing model when it emerged in the early 2010s. While it remains the cloud model for many types of workloads, the use of SaaS and PaaS is growing at a much faster rate.
Why miss out on FaaS?
Function-as-a-Service is often confused with serverless computing when, in fact, it's a subset of serverless. FaaS allows developers to execute portions of application code (called functions) in response to specific events. Everything besides the code—physical hardware, virtual machine operating system, and web server software management—is provisioned automatically by the cloud service provider in real-time as the code executes and is spun back down once the execution completes. Billing starts when execution starts and stops when execution stops.
What makes the industry lean on to a cloud privilege?
Virtualization enables cloud providers to make maximum use of their data center resources. Not surprisingly, many corporations have adopted the cloud delivery model for their on-premises infrastructure so they can realize maximum utilization and cost savings vs. traditional IT infrastructure and offer the same self-service and agility to their end-users.
Cloud computing is on-demand access, via the internet, to computing resources—applications, servers (physical servers and virtual servers), data storage, development tools, networking capabilities, and more—hosted at a remote data center managed by a cloud services provider (or CSP). The CSP makes these resources available for a monthly subscription fee or bills them according to usage.
Compared to traditional on-premises IT, and depending on the cloud services you select, cloud computing helps do the following:
Lower IT costs: Cloud lets you offload some or most of the costs and effort of purchasing, installing, configuring, and managing your own on-premises infrastructure.
Improve agility and time-to-value: With the cloud, your organization can start using enterprise applications in minutes, instead of waiting weeks or months for IT to respond to a request, purchase and configure supporting hardware, and install the software. Cloud also lets you empower certain users—specifically developers and data scientists—to help themselves to software and support infrastructure.
Scale more easily and cost-effectively: Cloud provides elasticity—instead of purchasing excess capacity that sits unused during slow periods, you can scale capacity up and down in response to spikes and dips in traffic. You can also take advantage of your cloud provider’s global network to spread your applications closer to users around the world.
The cloud computing industry has taken a huge leap in the past year on its profound usage of cloud computing during the pandemic. According to global prediction, the market price for cloud computing will be sprung from 371.4 Billion USD in 2020 to 832.1 Billion USD by 2025 with an annual CAGR of 17.5% during the forecast period.
The predictions are welcoming more software developers to make the transition to cloud computing, more than ever. To taut, the demand market, IIT Roorkee – Wiley is offering post Graduate Certification in Cloud Computing & DevOps. It includes a foundation concept of virtualization, networking, and the cloud ecosystem and outlines their role in enabling cloud models.
It’s a 7 months course with the collective knowledge influence of industry experts who have carefully curated this unique program that builds skills to design and implement the complete workflow of cloud implementation. Volume Gallery Presents:
Krueck + Sexton REFLECTIONS – FROM THERE TO HERE
September 9th – October 28th, 2017 Reception: Saturday, September 9th 5-8PM
Krueck + Sexton, Lounge Chair:
Volume Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition with Krueck + Sexton, Reflections – From There to Here, opening Saturday, September 9th from 5-8 PM at 1709 W Chicago Ave, Chicago IL, 60622.
Ron Krueck and Mark Sexton have worked in partnership for over 35 years. Their first private residence commission was the now iconic Steel and Glass House (Chicago, 1979). Soon after completion, they began a series of commissions for prominent Chicago tastemakers including Beverly/Barry Crown and Joan Weinstein – the owner of Ultimo, an infamous fashion boutique known for bringing Giorgio Armani and Sonia Rykiel to Chicago.
Reflections, focuses on works – specifically, chairs – from these 1980s commissions, which propelled Krueck + Sexton’s career. Larger projects, ranging in scale, followed–from restoring Crown Hall to larger buildings like Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago, as well as numerous projects around the U.S. and Europe.
Central to Reflections is the Lounge Chair. Originally designed for the Weinstein commission, this piece is being realized for the first time. Fabricated by the same metal craftsmen that were responsible for the production of all of the furniture from the 1980s, the Lounge Chair is a beautiful example of Krueck + Sexton’s unique approach to juxtaposing a cool material like polished stainless steel with the bronze metallic leather.
Each piece of furniture in Reflections is an elegant expression of form, proportion, and sensuous materials. The structures are highly reflective appearing to lighten the mass of the design. The byproduct of reflectivity is that it absorbs and becomes part of the environment it is placed. It is an object at one moment and folds into space the next. The reflective stainless steel enables an expression of fluidity in form. Paradoxically, each organically inspired piece appears to be a celebration of industrial design, while in reality they are all meticulously handmade.
The mohair and cotton velvet fabric is a natural material that is visually soft with multidimensional hues created by how the light hits it and is used in all of the chairs. The fabric is supple and almost warm to the touch, in contrast to the cool precision of the machine made stainless steel. The connections are all about expressing how materials are put together. They are often highly articulated to support the visual delight, rhythm and scale of the object. Although the furniture was designed for specific residences, their classic form and materials allow them to work outside the original space.
Reflections – From There to Here to continue through October 28th.
Ron Krueck was born in 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where, in his early years, he was exposed to art in the local art museum and was encouraged to draw. He chose to study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where he was impressed with Crown Hall, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
During the summers, while studying at IIT, Krueck traveled, thinking he could gain more architectural insights from seeing the world’s great cities and monuments than from working. After he received his B.A. from IIT in 1970, Krueck took a job at the Chicago office of C.F. Murphy, now Jahn, and then with the office of Hammond Beeby. In 1975 he left the practice of architecture to study painting and drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, until he opened his office with the commission of The Steel and Glass House in 1979.
The studio continues to be influenced by Krueck’s interest in art, as well as by his early education in the Modernist doctrines at IIT. Krueck had worked with Mark Sexton for ten years when they established the office of Krueck & Sexton Architects in 1991. Krueck has taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and at the Illinois Institute of Technology, a position he held until 2012.
Krueck’s built work has received numerous design awards, and his architectural drawings are in museum collections and have been exhibited in exhibitions worldwide since 1981. Krueck is active in Chicago’s cultural affairs and serves on boards and committees of related interest. Krueck was elected to the Interior’s Hall of Fame, as well as to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 1992.
Mark Sexton is a founding partner of Krueck + Sexton Architects, Mark designs and manages all of the firm’s work along with Ron Krueck. His belief that exceptional architecture can and does make a difference to people’s lives is a hallmark of the studio. His dedication to craftsmanship, material, and detail enables the firm’s built work to express the values of modern design with a timeless quality.
Mark graduated from the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1980 and continues his support of the school serving on the Board of Advisors. He is a member of the GSA Design Excellence Program National Registry of Peer Professionals, the Chicago Architecture Biennial board and is on the faculty of Northwestern University teaching Architecture Engineering and Design at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
He received the distinction of Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2006 and annually participates in the Bridge mentor program sponsored by the AIA, College of Fellows and Young Architects Forum.
Mark lectures at diverse venues worldwide including universities, cultural institutions and conferences. Sharing the firm’s experience of collaboration, he has participated in symposiums jointly with clients, consultants and colleagues.

Two Over One
Organizations that you love and gaze upward to are regular results of more than one driving force. This is on the grounds that business visionaries working exclusively may not be as proficient, as visionary and as instinctive as two businesspeople working and growing a business together. Here are four progressive marks that turned out to be enormous because of the ability and backing of two fellow benefactors:
Two Is Better Than One-Google
Google's story starts path in 1995 when Larry Page was thinking about Stanford University for graduate school and Sergey Brin, an understudy there, was allowed to show him around grounds.
In their first gathering, Larry and Sergey differ about everything; except by the next year, their fellowship bloomed when Brin consented to help Page with his examination venture on backlinks. Thus, without them understanding at the time, they started taking a shot at a web search tool that would bring them a huge number of dollars in the coming months.
BackRub basically utilized a site page's backlinks to decide the page's significance and pertinence to a pursuit question. The pursuit page was kept basic because of the absence of a web engineer however they were tested to discover enough processing capacity to deal with inquiries as the apparatus turned out to be progressively prominent.
Before long, they changed the name to "Google" – a play on the numerical articulation for 1 pursued by a hundred zeros that additionally apropos reflected Larry and Sergey's crucial "sort out the world's data and make it generally open and valuable".
Additionally Read: Top 10 Tips On How To Stay Secure While Using The Internet
In spite of the fact that they were working from their apartments, by mid-1998, Google was getting 10,000 pursuit hits for each day and grabbing the eye of Silicon Valley speculators.
In August 1998, Sun fellow benefactor Andy Bechtolsheim kept in touch with them a check for $1,00,000, and Google Inc. was formally conceived. With the new venture, the group redesigned their workspace and set-up their first office in a companion's carport in California. In August 2004, the organization opened up to the world about an IPO and raised $1.67 billion!
Larry and Sergey constantly liked to keep things vivid and offbeat – from their first server made out of Lego to their at present well known Googleplex office! The two authors' energy for advanced and love for the unpredictable make them the ideal pair for driving this visionary organization.
Google as of now has in excess of 88,000 representatives in more than 50 nations and has created more than 200 items around the world.
Two Is Better Than One Flipkart
Established in 2007 by Sachin and Binny Bansal, who aren't siblings, Flipkart is India's first internet business organization that became an integral factor when online business was just making its first strides in the nation. Lead by two visionary individuals, Flipkart today additionally possesses Myntra, Jabong, Phone Pe, eBay India, and some more organizations.
Sachin and Binny are alumni of IIT – Delhi where they considered software engineering designing together.
After graduation, the two started working at internet business mammoth Amazon and it was there that they understood the colossal capability of web-based business in India and chose to dispatch their very own entryway!
At the hour of dispatch, Flipkart just sold books however before long extended to cover an enormous assortment of things – from kitchen machines to garments.
In a nation loaded up with individuals who want to purchase in real money, from shops, and simply subsequent to analyzing the items themselves, Flipkart normally confronted tremendous difficulties first and foremost and was troubled to achieve the move in the outlooks of the majority.
Flipkart brought online numerous retail classifications, money down framework, and gigantic limits that took the web-based business in India to an enormous level. Flipkart hit the $15 billion valuation mark in under 10 years, and both the prime supporters proceeded to get extremely rich people.

Two Is Better Than One Hewlett Packard
William Hewlett and David Packard met at Stanford in the mid-1930s and promptly turned out to be dear companions on account of their shared love for gadgets and the outside.
In the wake of getting their degrees, Hewlett proceeded with his instruction while Packard took up an occupation in General Electric. In 1939, in any case, they chose to begin a business together and flipped a coin to decide its name.
Since Hewlett got heads, the organization was called Hewlett-Packard! Working out of Packard's carport, their first item was a programmed foul-line pointer for bowling alleys.
Albeit bright, the item had no market. Proceeding onward rapidly, they chose to make a sound oscillator, the plan of which was laid out in Hewlett's proposition.
The oscillator grabbed the eye of Walt Disney who purchased eight of the gadgets for his forthcoming film Fantasia! Extravagant by the deal, the two authors pushed the item significantly more and, simultaneously, started taking a shot at another item.
From that point onward, HP has moved uniquely in an upward direction. In 1943, the organization deals became $1 million.
Around then, HP started to devise a special organization culture that before long got referred to in the Silicon Valley as "The HP Way". It involved a lot of practices and arrangements that offered HP labourers liberal advantages, including restorative protection to cover calamitous medical issues, something that was for all intents and purposes incredible in business at the time.
HP's first office – the carport – is viewed as the origin of Silicon Valley and is a verifiable milestone.
Today, HP is at #42 on World's Most Valuable Brands. HP currently has in excess of 3,00,000 representatives all around and works in creating and assembling PCs, organizing equipment, PC stockpiling and conveying administrations, programming, and printers and imaging items.
There isn't an individual on the planet who hasn't knew about HP or seen one of its items and it's everything because of the brilliant association among Hewlett and Packard!
Two Is Better Than One Microsoft
The keep going on our rundown, Microsoft, is an easily recognized name for any individual who utilizes a PC, everywhere throughout the world. From Windows to Office, to Skype, and as of late Xbox, each individual has profited by Microsoft items sooner or later or the other.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen, two cherished companions, shaped Microsoft in 1975 to benefit from their common figuring abilities. It was Allen who thought of the name "Smaller scale delicate" – a mix of the words microcomputer and programming.
The organization started tasks when the shrewd and venturesome pair saw a chance to construct a BASIC mediator for the (at the time) weighty Altair 8800 microcomputer.
Regardless of not really owning their very own Altair, they assembled the mediator utilizing an oversimplified recreation.

After rapidly reaching Altair and demonstrating them the activities, the group began an effective business association with MITS, Altair's parent organization.
During the 1980s Microsoft made its very own working framework, Xenix, which neglected to catch the market yet shaped the premise to make MS-DOS, the organization's first evident working framework and its greatest business accomplishment to date.
In 1985, IBM and Microsoft held hands to make OS/2, the working framework for IBM PCs, yet Windows before long dominated OS/2 and by the 1990s, Microsoft had caught 90% piece of the overall industry of the world's PCs.
Throughout the years, the organization extended every which way. What's more, in spite of the fact that the two organizers don't effectively add to the organization's operations today, Microsoft is as yet the go-to organization for work area clients over the world.

When Will There Be a Pharmacological Intervention for Sleep Apnea?
The post When Will There Be a Pharmacological Intervention for Sleep Apnea? is republished from https://www.ellymackay.com
Clinical trials could begin next year for a new class of drugs that have shown promising results in treating sleep-disordered breathing in rodents.
By Lisa Spear
It’s no secret that many sleep apnea patients struggle to use their CPAP machines. What if there was a pharmacological fix, a pill that they could take just before bed that would target the cause of their disordered breathing and keep their airways open throughout the night?
A collaborative project between scientists at the University of Chicago and the IIT Research Institute is working to make this a reality. They are investigating a new class of drugs to treat patients who refuse or fail more traditional sleep apnea therapies. Clinical trials could start as early as the second quarter of next year and could lead to a paradigm shift in how sleep medicine physicians treat their sleep apnea patients, says David McCormick, PhD, president of IIT Research Institute and professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
“We identified a completely novel class of drugs, completely novel compounds that are synthesized by a completely novel chemistry,” says McCormick.
The team of researchers presented their findings on April 23 to the Cambridge biotech community at Science2Startup (S2S), an invitation-only symposium in Boston aimed at strengthening connections between biotech investors and therapeutics researchers at academic research institutions.
The scientific presenters were selected by an advisory group of biotech investors, who received over 175 presentation submissions from 64 institutions across 3 continents. Submissions were narrowed down to 12 presenting groups, which then received hands-on coaching and feedback on their scientific translation and drug development plans during the day-long event, according to a press release.
“The goal of events like S2S is to accelerate the translation of innovative discoveries made by some of the world’s preeminent researchers from basic research to the bedside,” says Bill Harrington, managing partner at Osage University Partners.
McCormick’s research group is still in communication with some of the funding agencies from the symposium. According to McCormick, there is the possibility of future collaboration on the development of pharmacological therapies for sleep apnea, the study of which has already received grant funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
According to the group’s research published in the peer-reviewed journal PNAS, the administration of L-propargyl glycine to rodents with disordered breathing can help the animals maintain open airways to prevent obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and inhibit the chemoreflux loop gain that underlies central sleep apnea.
The compounds were shown to decrease apneas when tested on genetically engineered mice, which reliably recapitulate human sleep apnea. The efficacy was also tested on rats, which demonstrated that the decrease in apneas was not a mouse-specific phenomenon, says McCormick, a coauthor on the study.
“The underlying mechanisms of what is going on in a rodent model and a human model appear to be very similar,” says McCormick. “This is the only therapeutic strategy that we are aware of that’s under development that targets both obstructive and central sleep apnea.”
The compounds work to suppress disordered breathing by targeting an enzyme called cystathionine gamma-lyase, also known as CSE. This enzyme is present in certain tissues including the carotid body, a cluster of cells near the fork of the carotid artery, which runs along both sides of the throat.
Emerging research now suggests that a certain percentage of OSA can be due to a decrease in the neurons that control tongue movement, which causes the tongue to become placid, blocking the airways. This process can be interrupted by inhibiting the CSE enzyme, says Nanduri R. Prabhakar, PhD, director of the Institute for Integrative Physiology and the Center for Systems Biology at The University of Chicago.
“For a long time people thought that OSA is primarily an anatomical problem that concerned the upper airways. But now emerging evidence suggests that not only are there anatomical disturbances but also the chemoreflux coming from the carotid body, which controls the respiratory movement,” Prabhakar says.
At least one third of patients with OSA are estimated to have this particular underlying cause. Currently, there are a number of compounds under investigation for sleep apnea, but most are not designed to treat the underlying disease. Other medications might only target sleep apnea symptoms, such as daytime sleepiness or high blood pressure.
This new class of drugs takes aim at the cellular roots of the disorder, according to the researchers. “This is attacking what we believe is the underlying biochemical mechanism,” says McCormick. “What we believe is that by targeting the sleep apneas, many of the very important comorbidities are likely to be improved.”

Ending thoughts on these Chicago startups
Chicago startups have come a long way.
A number of venture capital firms have started to get more aggressive in investing in the area, including Pritzker Group, MK Capital, Origin Ventures, OCA Ventures, Apex Ventures, and Chicago Ventures.
The state government of Illinois and the city of Chicago have also helped Chicago startups, embracing them as a salvation for the city and state’s economic issues. This includes the launch of the Illinois Invest Venture Fund.
Groupon’s incredible rise, based in Chicago, also had a large halo effect on the local startup ecosystem. It put the city on the map and offered lots of inspiration to hundreds of other startups.
According to Built In Chicago, 367 digital startups launched in 2012, a 187% increase from 2011 and a 15 times increase from the 25 startups per year average that existed between 2004 to 2008, which was before Groupon. 59 of these companies successfully raised more than $1MM each, aggregating over $391MM in venture capital raised in 2012.
This was a 4 times increase from the $109MM average per year between 2004 to 2008. Things do not look to be slowing down.
Chicago has also drawn the attention of some major coastal venture capital firms. There have been multi-million dollar raises from Activ, Analyte Health, Avant Credit, Belly, Big Machines, Braintree, BrightTag, Cleversafe, Fruition Partners, Future Simple, Groupon, GrubHub, inXpo, Mu Sigma, Narrative Science, Networked Merchants, Retrofit, SilkRoad, Singlehop, Sprout Social, 37 signals, Total Attorneys, Trunk Club and Valence Health, invested by major coastal VC’s like Accel, Alsop Louie, Andreessen Horowitz, Bain, Battery, Benchmark, Bessemer, Digital Sky, Draper Fisher, General Atlantic, Greycroft, Greylock, Highland, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, Maveron, NEA, Sequoia, Trinity, and USV. Chicago is no longer a “flyover city” and has become a major destination for big venture funds. Chicago startups no longer need to relocate.
What’s more, these Chicago startup investments are leading to some very good returns. Groupon and Textura are IPOs, and it looks Grub Hub is looking for an IPO after its merger with Seamless. Braintree was sold to PayPal/eBay for $800MM.
Oracle acquired Big Machines for $400MM. Accenture bought Acquity got $316MM. ValueClick was bought by Dotomi for $259MM. This list goes and on and on, all of it very impressive.

An IoT-enabled lab for cannabis farmers, a system for catching drones mid-flight, and the Internet of Cows are a few of the seventeen startups that are exhibiting today at Alchemist Accelerator’s 18th demo day. The event, which will be streamed live here, focuses on Big Data and AI startups with an enterprise bent.
The startups are showing their stuff at Juniper’s Aspiration Dome in Sunnyvale, California at 3pm today but you can catch the whole event online if you want to see just what computers and cows have in common. Here are the startups pitching on stage.
Tarsier – Tarsier has built AI computer vision to detect drones. The founders discovered the need while getting their MBAs at Stanford, after one had completed a PhD in Aeronautics. Drones are proliferating. And getting into places they shouldn’t — prisons, R&D centers, public spaces. Securing these spaces today requires antiquated military gear that’s clunky and expensive. Tarsier is all software. And cheap, allowing them to serve markets the others can’t touch.
Lightbox – Retail 3D is sexy — think Virtual Try-Ons, VR immersion, ARKit Stores. But creating these experiences means creating 3D models of thousands of products. Today, artists slog through this process, outputting a few models per day. Lightbox wants to eliminate the humans. This duo of recent UPenn and Stanford Computer Science grads claim their approach to 3D scanning is pixel perfect without needing artists. They have booked $40K to date and want to digitize all of the world’s products.
Vorga – Cannabis is big business — over $7B in revenue today and growing fast. The crop’s quality — and a farmer’s income — is highly sensitive to a few chemicals in it. Farmers today test the chemical composition of their crops through outsourced labs. Vorga’s bringing the lab in-house to the cannabis farmer via their IoT platform. The CEO has a PhD in Chemical Physics, and formerly helped the Department of Defense keep weapons of mass destruction out of the hands of terrorists. She’s now helping cannabis farmers get high…revenue.
Neulogic – Neulogic is founded by a duo of Computer Science PhDs that led key parts of Walmart.com product search. They now want to solve two major problems facing the online apparel industry: the need to provide curated inspiration to shoppers and the need to offset rising customer acquisition costs by selling more per order. Their solution combines AI with a fashion knowledge graph to generate outfits on demand.
Intensivate – Life used to be simple. Enterprises would use servers primarily for function-driven applications like billing. Today, servers are all about big data, analytics, and insight. Intensivate thinks servers need a new chip upgrade to reflect that change. They are building a new CPU they claim gets 12x the performance for the same cost. Hardware plays like this are hard to pull off, but this might be the team to do it. It includes the former Co-Founder and CEO of CPU Startup QED which was acquired for $2.3 Billion, and a PhD in Parallel Computation who was on the design team for the Alpha CPU from DEC.
Integry – SaaS companies put a lot of effort into building out integrations. Integry provides app creators their own integrations marketplace with pre-boarded partners so they can have apps working with theirs from the get go. The vision is to enable app creators to mimic their own Slack App directory without spending the years or the millions. Since these integrations sit inside their app, Integry claims setup rates are significantly better and churn is reduced by as much as 40%.
Cattle Care – AI Video Analytics applied to cows! Cattle Care wants to increase dairy farmers’ revenue by more than $1M per year and make cows healthier at the same time. The product identifies cows in the barn by their unique black and white patterns. Algorithms collect parameters such as walking distance, interactions with other cows, feeding patterns and other variables to detect diseases early. Then the system sends alerts to farm employees when they need to take action, and confirms the problem has been solved afterwards.
VadR – VR/AR is grappling with a lack of engaging content. Vadr thinks the cause is a broken feedback loop of analytics to the creators. This trio of IIT-Delhi engineers has built machine learning algorithms that get smarter over time and deliver actionable insights on how to modify content to increase engagement.
Tika – This duo of ex-Googlers want to help engineering managers manage their teams better. Managers use Tika as an AI-powered assistant over Slack to facilitate personalized conversations with engineering teams. The goal is to quickly uncover and resolve employee engagement issues, and prevent talent churn.
GridRaster – Gridraster wants to bring AR/VR to mobile devices. The problem? AR/VR is compute-intensive. Latency, bandwidth, and poor load balancing kill AR/VR on mobile networks. The solution? For this trio of systems engineers from Broadcom, Qualcomm, and Texas Instrument, it’s about starting with enterprise use cases and building edge clouds to offload the work. They have 12 patents.
AitoeLabs – Despite the buzz around AI Video Analytics for security, AitoeLabs claims solutions today are plagued with 100s of thousands of false alarms, requiring lots of human involvement. The engineering trio founding team combines a secret sauce of contextual data with their own deep models to solve this problem. They claim a 6x reduction in human monitoring needs with their tech. They’re at $240K ARR with $1M of LOIs.
Ubiquios – Companies building wireless IoT devices waste over $1.8B because of inadequate embedded software options making products late to market and exposing them to security and interoperability issues. The Ubiquios wireless stack wants to simplify the development of wireless IoT devices. The company claims their stack results in up to 90% lower cost and up to 50% faster time to market. Qualcomm is a partner.
4me, Inc. – 4me helps companies organize and track their IT outsourcing projects. They have 16 employees, 92 customers and generate several million in revenue annually. Storm Ventures led a $1.65m investment into the company.
TorchFi – You know the pop up screen you see when you log into a WiFi hotspot? TorchFi thinks it’s a digital gold mine in the waiting. Their goal is to convert that into a sales channel for hotspot owners. Their first product is a digital menu that transforms the login screen into a food ordering screen for hotels and restaurants. Cisco has selected them as one of 20 apps to be distributed on their Meraki hotspots.
Cogitai – This team of 16 PhD’s wants to usher in a more powerful type of AI called continual learning. The founders are the fathers of the field — and include professors in Computer Science from UT Austin and U Michigan. Unlike what we commonly think of as AI, Cogitai’s AI is built to acquire new skills and knowledge from experience, much like a child does. They have closed $2 million in bookings this year, and have $5 million in funding.
LoadTap – On-Demand Trucking Apps are in vogue. LoadTap explicitly calls out that it is not one. This team which includes an Apple software architect and founder with a family background in trucking is an enterprise SaaS only solution for shippers who prefer to work with their pre-vetted trucking companies in a closed loop. LoadTap automates matching between the shippers and trucking companies using AI and predictive analytics. They’re at $90K ARR and growing revenue 50% month over month.
Ondaka – Ondaka has built a VR-like 3D platform to render industrial information visually, starting with the oil and gas industry. For these industrial customers, the platform provides a better way to understand real-time IoT data, operational and job site safety issues, and how reliable their systems are. The product launched two months ago, they have closed 3 customers already, and are projecting ARR in the six figures. They have raised $350K in funding.

WAYS TO GET Smell Of Smoke FROM Used Refrigerator
There are lots of strange but effective ways to eliminate bad smells in your home. To avoid this in the foreseeable future, below are some tips that can help your fridge stay smelling fresh. Vinegar is a natural cleaner and odour absorber, that will help get deep down into the fibres of the car's upholstery. My pom used to run out of the house each time how to clean mold out of a fridge I was about to open the fridge door, as the smell was just overwhelming. The muscles of the seafood containing the trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) begin to decompose leading to it to break down into trimethylamine (TMA) which results in the bad smell. Mini Refrigerator Smells Dreadful - Cent Arcade , this odour is very hard to eliminate, and sometimes, regardless of what you try, the odor remains. Fly.com Buyers Reluctantly Identified as Owners of Airfare Wholesaler Mondee
Travel agencies, particularly ones catering to ethnic communities, rely heavily on bulk airfares bought at wholesale rates from companies like Mondee. Air travel in Asia is surging as the middle class gets bigger and business ties with the rest of the world deepen. Associated Press
Skift Take: Mondee, a travel technology company in California, paid $2.89 million for the Fly.com domain name, according to our sources. But the story behind this secretive company is also a broader tale about private equity, ethnic travel, and how airlines distribute their lowest-priced tickets.
— Sean O'Neill
In March, Travelzoo sold Fly.com, the Internet domain name it had used for a travel price-comparison search engine that had failed. But Travelzoo didn’t disclose the buyer’s name.
Skift has learned exclusively that the buyers are the owners of Mondee, a travel technology company headquartered in Forest City, California that is an airfare consolidator, the largest in North America.
Travel deals publisher Travelzoo received $2.89 million in cash for the domain, according to financial filings.
The new owner is Fly Holdings, which updated Fly.com’s privacy policy. Since then, Mondoe posted a job advertisement for a chief marketing officer for Fly.com. The chief marketing officer would build a marketing team, refine a brand message and develop strategic partnerships for Fly.com.
When we contacted Mondee, a spokesperson said the Mondee operation did not own the domain name and that the want ad was a mistake. The company then removed the job posting from its site.
The spokesperson did not offer an explanation for why the ad had been posted on its careers section.
Skift circled back to officials at Travelzoo. A spokesperson declined to comment.
But a person with direct knowledge of Travelzoo’s decisionmaking said anonymously that the company did indeed sell Fly.com to Mondee’s owners.
Mondee is majority-owned by its co-founder CEO Prasad Gundumogula. Neither he nor co-founder, former CEO, and co-investor Vajid Jari would speak with Skift.
More on Mondee’s owners and Fly.com’s possible uses below. But first, an explanation of what the company does, its wild ride with private equity, and the broader industry trends it has been up against.
Consolidator 3.0: Rise of the Machines
Mondee is a technology provider to agents and does not — as a core business — sell directly to consumers.
Mondee owns a handful of brands that collectively give it the largest market share in North America among airfare consolidators.
A consolidator is a bit like how Costco offers wholesale rates on retail goods. A consolidator gets tickets from airlines in bulk at a deep discount and then distributes them to agencies, which are typically offline. These agencies often focus on specific ethnic markets such as India or China, for example.
Consolidator fares are cheaper because they come with restrictions. The most common catches are that the tickets are non-refundable and don’t let passengers earn frequent flyer miles.
Those restrictions used to put off some consumers, although the discounts can be very attractive.
But some consumers no longer mind the restrictions now that the tickets airlines sell directly on their own websites often come with similar restrictions.
Two examples: American Airlines’ new basic economy fares that do not allow a passenger to stow a bag in the overhead bin. Similarly, United’s new basic economy fares do not let the passenger earn elite status credit.
Mondee’s technology has made consolidator fares easier to buy and sell.
Years ago, agents had to use phones and fax machines to access consolidator fares an they often had to deal with delayed responses.
Today Mondee’s software allows the tickets to be processed instantly. The software syncs with an agency’s systems for ticketing, billing, and communicating with customers during and after a sale.
Last year, more than 100 airlines sold about 1.5 million tickets through Mondee’s various operations, the company says.
The digitization of ethnic travel
Consolidator fares are especially popular with travel agencies that serve ethnic communities.
Airlines may struggle to market to ethnic communities, such as immigrants to the U.S. or Germany who have family they visit back home in places like India, the Philippines, or Argentina. Ethnic communities sometimes prefer to book through agents that speak their language and offer culturally relevant marketing.
So airlines sometimes find it is more cost-effective to distribute tickets via consolidators that work with the agencies that have relationships with those communities.
Airlines like to sell long-distance flights to individuals who are “visiting friends and family” (or VFR, in the trade lingo).
What the airlines like is that the market is resilient through a crisis, and the discounts aren’t widely available to the general public. While recent economic downturns and scares related to SARS, bird flu, Zika, terrorism, and other headline-grabbing events caused plunges in business and leisure travel broadly, ethnic, or VFR, travel has remained fairly steady throughout.
Roll up, roll up
Mondee was created on the promise of transforming consolidator sales with technology. It has not quite lived up to that promise yet, according to the accounts of a few professionals who are familiar with the company.
In 2011, travel technology entrepreneurs Jafri and Gundumogula co-founded Mondee by persuading GTCR, a Chicago-based buyout firm, to bring to life their idea for a company.
In autumn 2011, GTCR and management executed equity offering of $208 million, according to financial filings.
From then through 2013, Mondee began a roll-up of consolidators.
Mondee acquired U.S.- and Canadian-based consolidators SkyLink, cFares, ExploreTrip, C&H International, TransAm, and Hariworld Travels. cFares was a consumer-direct website that had raised $13.6 million in funding but Mondee has since shut it down.
These acquisitions made Mondee the largest consolidator in North America, with about $1.2 billion in gross bookings combined.
In 2013, the company began to streamline its operations. Each of the consolidators had its own tech platform for reaching agents. Mondee brought all of the systems under one roof, creating a single data feed.
In 2014 Mondee invested in an operating platform that reduced transaction processing costs and would allow the company to scale, among other moves.
In March 2016, GTCR exited the investment.
The buyout firm may have been disappointed with its payday because iit no longer highlights the investment on its website. The firm didn’t immediately respond a request for comment.
What went wrong?
No one we spoke with would discuss Mondee’s challenges on the record.
Here’s what appears to have happened: GTCR was caught off guard by how mergers in the airline industry enabled airlines to stabilize their business models and became savvier about using technology to boost direct-to-consumer sales.
This trend had the knock-on effect of cooling airline interest in the consolidator channel.
Mondee saw its margins squeezed. Airlines stopped being as generous with discounts on wholesale tickets. Meanwhile, performance-based incentives for offline agents had to rise due to competition.
Mondee’s spokesperson says the company parted from GTCR on good terms, and that, in 2016, the company increased its transaction volume by 30 percent, year-over-year, though it wouldn’t say off of what base. We couldn’t verify the claim.
Mondee says that even on occasions when consolidator fares cost about the same as tickets sold directly by airlines, its software still appeals to agencies.
Its technology platform is compatible with the most popular desktop reservation systems used by agents worldwide. This makes the sales process easier for agents.
For example, agents who use the Sabre Red workspace to book travel can use an application within Sabre’s system to access Mondee’s consolidator fares.
Mondee’s tools are compatible with the agency desktops run by Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport, which serve 90 percent of the agency market worldwide. No other consolidator can say the same, Mondee claims.
Business-to-business growth plans
As noted, Mondee has focused on selling airline tickets so far. But it says it has recently piloted “stopover hotel reservations” as an additional product.
By end of the year, Mondee says it will release an enhanced version of its reservation platform that will make hotels available more widely.
It has a long-term goal of helping agents sell trip insurance, cruise sailings, and attractions, as add-ons and up-sells.
Fly.com’s potential uses
Fly.com’s fate remains a mystery, with no change to the website since Travelzoo sold it.
Mondee.com’s job posting for the new chief marketing officer position for Fly.com said the company is planning on television advertising and marketing campaigns for “branding and product promotion.” The CMO would also “build a highly efficient team of marketing professionals.”
Mondee’s owners did not offer further explanation of the (since-removed) want ad.
Is a direct-to-consumer play in the works for Fly.com?
Fly.com enables consumers to compare airfares and Mondee’s consolidator business could offer a competitive advantage if it can somehow get around restrictions and offer some of the fares publicly on Fly.com.
It’s notable that one Mondee company, ExploreTrip, which it bought in 2011, has long sold flights directly to consumers.
Most of the flights ExploreTrip offered in Skift’s random tests appeared to be consolidator tickets because they had restrictions like a lack of refundability and no accrual of frequent flyer miles.
Perhaps the ExploreTrip brand could be ported over to Fly.com and rebranded.
Another sign that Mondee’s owners may be wanting to emphasize retail ticket sales, and not just focus on consolidator fares, is that this year it has added its first direct connection with an airline.
This spring it began a test of connecting directly to Emirates Airlines’ host reservation system via Emirates’ business-to-business API. An API (application programming interface) is technology that companies use to share data with other companies.
This direct link enables Mondee-connected agents to see availability, issue tickets, and offer upsells such as checked-baggage fees, visas, and chauffeur services. Emirates built the connection primarily for retail, or public, fares, not consolidator fares.
New metasearch brand
Perhaps coincidentally, Vajid Jafri, co-owner of Mondee, has in the past year founded a new company on the side — a direct-to-consumer travel price-comparison search engine called OnVoya.
This brand, which appears to aspire to compete with price-comparison companies Kayak and Skyscanner, has hired 15 part- and full-time employees.
The site refers travelers to complete their bookings on online travel portals like FareStreet, which appears to resell consolidator tickets from Mondee, and other metasearch sites like fast-growing, Czech-based Kiwi, and direct from airlines like American.
OnVoya might be a natural fit for porting over to Fly.com. After all, Fly.com already has some positive search engine traffic for having been a travel metasearch site for since 2009.
Any direct-to-consumer play would face competition.
Rivals offering consolidator and similar fares include online travel companies like Australia-based Webjet, U.S-based CheapOair, and Dutch-based Travis, which runs Vayama.com and other sites.
So that might not be an appetizing fight to take on.
