NA-249 Election: Bilawal Bhutto congratulates PPP on victory
Tumblr media
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday congratulated the PPP's workers and supporters after the party's candidate Qadir Khan Mandokhail emerged victorious in the NA-249 by-election, after votes were recounted.
The party had much to celebrate for, as its candidate was declared the victor by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) with an even wider margin after votes were counted once again on the Opposition's insistence.
"Congratulations to workers of Pakistan Peoples Party on winning NA249 Karachi. After recount we’ve expanded our lead to over 900+ votes. False accusations have been exposed, the truth has prevailed," tweeted the PPP chairperson.
Bilawal took a shot at the government as well, saying that Karachiites "have rejected selected & placed their hopes in PPP".
After a recount of votes polled across all 276 stations, Mandokhail got 15,656 votes, whereas PML-N candidate Miftah Ismail secured 14,747,. This means that the PPP candidate was ahead of the second-placed Mistah Ismail by a margin of 909 votes.
When the unofficial by-poll results were first announced, Mandokhail won with 16,156 votes, whereas Ismail came in second with 15,473, resulting in a difference of 683 votes.
The low margin of votes had prompted Ismail to petition the ECP to hold a recount. The ECP, accepting Ismail's application for a hearing, issued a stay order, withholding the results of the by-poll.
On May 4, following a hearing, the ECP had ordered a recount on May 6, which was boycotted by all parties except for the PPP.
The vote recount hit a snag when candidates objected to unsealed bags that were brought for a recount and came out of the District Returning Officer's office in protest.
The PTI had gone so far as to file a petition with the ECP seeking annulment of the by-election in NA-249 due to alleged rigging.
However, ECP officials decreed that "the recount process will be completed as per the order”.

Govt no longer worried about PDM's long march after seeing attendance at ECP rally: Sheikh Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Tuesday hit out at leaders of the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for its rally in front of the office of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in Islamabad today, saying television footage showed “not more than 3,000 people” had attended the protest. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad shortly after the PDM rally concluded, he said the PDM leaders were “forgetting that Prime Minister Imran Khan gave them the permission to enter the capital’s Red Zone”, adding that he also had the same opinion “to let you play openly”. “After this [rally], whatever small worry we had [about the long march] has dissipated. We did not even shut the metro bus service; that is [the level of your] political strength.” He also challenged some of the opposition’s claims, saying no one had “served more jail time than I have” for the sake of Khatm-i-Nabuwwat (finality of prophethood). “What have you gotten into? This game is not in your destiny.” Rashid also responded to Rehman’s remarks that the government had a “problem” with students of madressahs attending political rallies, saying: “You are inciting children. I have not talked about religious students, I have talked about children.” “I thank the madressahs and ulema of Islamabad for showing responsibility. It was a Jummah bazaar of those hungry for power.” Moving on to PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz’s speech, he advised her to read more about the Broadsheet scandal. “You are in a lot of trouble. Another Pandora’s box and Panama 2 are opening on you. Talking about it without reading is equivalent to creating political problems for yourself,” he claimed. He questioned the issues that the opposition was talking about, also mocking the attendance at the rally. “After today’s show, we welcome your long march. It will be your last political act. You want to do it tomorrow, I say do it today. I will offer you Kashmiri tea. “Which direction do you want to take the nation just [to save] your corruption, loot and dishonesty?” he asked. The minister also lashed out at the speech of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai, saying “God only help Fazlur Rehman” if the former was allowed to continue giving speeches during PDM rallies. Referring to PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s visit to Umerkot today to celebrate his party’s win in a by-election, Rashid said Bilawal was “going on chartered flights while you (Rehman) are struggling in Islamabad”. Responding further to the JUI-F chief and Maryam’s speeches in which they alleged that Prime Minister Imran “sold Kashmir after taking money from India”, Rashid said “nobody in the world or Pakistan has fought the case of Kashmir like Imran Khan and Sheikh Rashid have.” “No power in the world can talk against Khatm-i-Nabuwwat as long as I am interior minister,” he emphasised. “You have exposed yourself in front of Imran Khan today,” the minister added.   https://timespakistan.com/govt-no-longer-worried-about-pdms-long-march-after-seeing-attendance-at-ecp-rally-sheikh/9045/

Imposing nearly Rs375 bn worth of taxes on masses is injustice: Bilawal
Tumblr media
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has commented on the PTI-led government's recent budget and said that the decision to impose nearly Rs375 billion worth of taxes on the masses is an "injustice."
Bilawal said that the government did not spare a single item of the common man's use from taxes.
"The government's decision to impose taxes on phone calls and then immediately retracting the decision shows that it is confused," said Bilawal, adding that Imran Khan's government is afraid of the public's reaction to the storm of heavy taxes imposed on them.
The PPP chairman further said that the government is "robbing people" in the name of the ‘PTIMF’ budget, implying a budget proposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"I reject the government's PTIMF budget," he said.
Two days ago, Bilawal had condemned the budget proposed by the federal government, calling it an "economic attack on Pakistanis".
The PPP chairman, in a statement issued from Media Cell Bilawal House, had said PTI would not be permitted to "play with the nation’s future", vowing his party would not allow Prime Minister Imran Khan "to conduct an economic massacre of the people."
Reiterating PM Imran Khan was "deaf, dumb, and blind" to the plight of the average citizen, he said: "The year might have changed, but the conditions of the people remain the same. A poor man’s house is still being deprived of necessities."
Condemning PM Imran Khan for his "lack of empathy towards the underprivileged", Bilawal said through the new budget, the premier had made his "enmity" towards the poor people clear.
"He has exposed his anti-people agenda with the new budget," he said.
The PPP chairman said that while the government was busy presenting "false facts" through the Economic Survey 2020-21 and claiming that the nation is flourishing, government employees protested against inflation outside the Parliament.
“People are now retaliating because they are aware of the puppet prime minister’s empty promises,” he said, adding: "They know it is Imran Khan’s habit to talk big and do nothing. He is incompetent and has completely failed to provide relief to the common man."
Highlighting how the facts tell another story, Bilawal said that an anti-people budget "was expected" from the PTI government.
“If the inflation rate, unemployment, and poverty figures have been historic during Imran Khan’s tenure, how can the budget be public [friendly]?” he questioned.

Should Pakistan PM Imran Khan Expect a Major Opposition Party Challenge Soon?
The PPP and the PML-N are in disarray, leaving Khan with a apparent runway for now.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran has been able to deal with his political rivals really skillfully given that coming to electricity all over seven months in the past. So significantly, Khan has not faced any key problem from political functions in opposition to his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf-led coalition. Even so, can this transform with two mainstream political events gearing up to take on Khan’s governing administration?
Bilawal Bhutto, the chairman of Pakistan’s Individuals Bash (PPP), has introduced that his political get together will expose the government’s promises of implementing several important economic and governance reforms. Moreover, the PPP’s leadership is of the perspective that Khan’s authorities has not been capable to carry out the National Motion Program (NAP) in opposition to terrorism in the region.
“I demand from customers a joint parliamentary committee for implementation of National Action Plan and elimination of all 3 federal ministers for their connection with the extremist companies. If our calls for are not met we would not guidance the govt around any move,” reported the chairman of PPP not too long ago. This 7 days, the PPP started a prolonged march versus the government as the former believes that Khan’s target remains on victimizing the political opposition fairly than providing on his electoral claims.
Enjoying this write-up? Click on below to subscribe for total access. Just $5 a month.
The allegations becoming produced by the PPP are not completely factual. Though Khan proceeds to wrestle in terms of managing some provinces effectively, corruption scandals and bad governance have remained a hallmark of the PPP’s preceding governing tenures. The PPP has ruled in the province of Sindh for many years and however problems this kind of as an inadequate provide of clean drinking drinking water, frequent hunger phases in several districts, road crime, and plummeting economic climate stay a concern.
The leadership of the PPP is now struggling with scenarios in the country’s courts regarding its involvement in mega corruption scandals in the province. The social gathering has remained peaceful for the final 6 months. Having said that, as Khan doubled down in his efforts to deliver on the electoral guarantee of holding corrupt political leaders accountable, PPP finds alone in a tricky spot. If the party does not go out in the streets and connect with the government’s actions political victimization, it may possibly not have a social gathering composition in the coming months. The worry is evident in the PPP’s ranks: the party not too long ago termed the government’s decision to return an Indian pilot, whose plane was downed in Pakistan not too long ago, an act of surrender. Also, the PPP blamed the authorities for not carrying out more than enough to tackle a variety of proscribed corporations in the nation.
These bulletins on the section of the PPP have not only angered the authorities, but also some other establishments in the nation. The fact that the PPP is offering statements that deny the state’s stance of taking on terrorism devoid of any discrimination only undermines the narrative that Pakistan is slowly but surely developing versus extremism. Regardless, it is distinct that the PPP’s leadership is not going to find any respite with allegations relevant to Khan’s incapacity to implement the NAP entirely.
On the other hand, the previous prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, was unveiled on bail by the country’s prime court for 6 weeks. Sharif has been experiencing a number of cases about his political party’s involvement in numerous corruption scandals. More importantly, Sharif and his political party’s foreseeable future remains unclear because of to a amount of good reasons.
First, there is an intra-household feud connected as to who will lead the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party after Sharif retires from politics. 2nd, there is another debate regarding divisions inside of the party’s ranks when it arrives to formulating a approach to offer and interact with various point out institutions. Sharif’s agenda all through the previous standard election solely targeted on concentrating on the country’s courts and the nationwide protection establishment. Sharif considered that both of those establishments did not want his party to win the election at the federal degree. This is a narrative that has undermined Pakistan’s image as a state where democracy is taking root. While Sharif could not win the election owing to Khan’s means to make political alliances in the province of Punjab, he has undoubtedly built a whole lot of enemies in the place. Nawaz Sharif may perhaps have been introduced from prison but it does not suggest that his political social gathering is any ailment to make a sturdy comeback whenever soon.
All in all, Khan’s authorities doesn’t experience any genuine obstacle from the political get-togethers in opposition irrespective of what his critics say concerning the government’s performance. On the other hand, Khan desires to make confident that helpful governance gets a hallmark of his rule. If Khan provides on on the governance entrance, almost everything else would come to be secondary.

Donald Trump's Pakistan tirade: New Delhi has to fight its own battle with Islamabad, can't outsource it to the US
Donald Trump's Pakistan tirade: New Delhi has to fight its own battle with Islamabad, can't outsource it to the US
That an incumbent of the White House has finally figured out the obvious with regard to Pakistan offering refuge to terrorists is heartening but it cannot define India’s foreign policy vis-a-vis its neighbour. There is no connection. The decision to pull back on the $255 million by Washington which it had earmarked for Pakistan is mutually exclusive from what New Delhi does and it does not wind in our sails for which we should be grateful. And it certainly is not grounds for any jubilation apart from a weary 'We told you so'.
US president Donald Trump. AP
While it is salutary in that it exposes Pakistan’s intents to one of its greatest allies let’s not be naive. This is not something American administrations have just realised. It is certainly not a eureka moment and we would be very shortsighted to conclude that President Donald Trump cannot change his mind again. Relations between Islamabad and Washington have been a fence with sharply pointed ups and sagging downs before so even this hold up is not forever. When it suited the US it has got into bed with military despots.
In July the US held up $50 million because it felt not enough was done to dismantle the Haqqani network of extremism which was a thorn in the American side since 2012. Let it also not be forgotten that $550 million have already been disbursed for military expenses.
While knowing of the terror activities it is a sobering thought that between 1951 and 2011 the US has given $61 billion and every year has a fiscal average figure reserved of $1.5 billion under the Enhanced Partnership with Pakistan Act of 2009 s.1707(also known as the Kerry-Lugar-Berman Act) which supposedly should have died in 2014. Since much of it is for military purchase who is the target. No cigars for guessing who it is.
Whether it is cricket or Kashmir our foreign policy has been woefully knee-jerk and reactive, rather than proactive. Every since Benazir Bhutto shopped for books on the Mall in Shimla while her father pow wowed with Indira Gandhi in 1972, Pakistan has been slippery clever. From coining labels like cricketlomacy to blocking SAARC to exporting terror to Mumbai the absence of respect or sincerity is glaring. It has mutilated the bodies of soldiers, sent death squads across the LoC, called on the UN to name India as a state sponsor for terrorism. Pakistan has sat in that council and brandished photographs of victims in Gaza firings as those of Kashmiris and not even apologised. Even the Samjhautha Express was bombed in an attack in 2007. Its media is blatantly hostile and news stories on TV dramatically slanted. Pakistan has never told us where the missing 54 Indian soldiers from 1971 are. In contrast, we returned 93,000 Pakistanis in uniform from the east. The latest in these misdeeds was the shabby treatment of the Jadhav wife and mother and it was again our failure to protect them adequately that allowed Pakistan to score cheap shots at the expense of Indian feminine customs. If you recall, it was nearly into the second day when our protests gained traction. The briefing and the protests should have followed instantly not as an afterthought. And knowing our history with this neighbour more precautions should have been taken before sending them.
Even after so many years of being fooled by pretence if we seek to clasp the coat-tails of another nation that has never given us a fair deal with Pakistan we are betraying ourselves. The Americans can redo their foreign policy sums any way they want and so must we, separate from this development. The tendency to hit back has to be replaced with a primary recognition that Islamabad cannot and will not change. With that in mind, India’s policies have to stop dithering mid-stream and mean business in a unilateral fashion.
Waiting for the US to do it for us is not only a dangerous premise it underscores the depth of the rut we have placed ourselves in despite three wars.

Pakistan court dismisses graft case against opposition's Imran Khan
Pakistan's Supreme Court dismissed a graft case against cricketer-turned-opposition leader Imran Khan Friday, ensuring he will contest a general election due next year, just months after the same body ousted ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
Khan had faced being disqualified from holding political office over charges including unreported assets, namely the funds he used to buy a scenic, sprawling property in the Bani Gala hills on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad.
He has dismissed the claims as a political vendetta, saying he used money earned from his career as one of Pakistan's most famous World Cup cricketers to buy the land and that he has the documentation to prove it.
"No omission or dishonesty can be attributed to him. This petition has no merits and is dismissed accordingly," chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar said, reading from the judgement to a packed courtroom.
Shortly after the judgement Khan held a press conference in Karachi where he told reporters "Pakistan's highest court has exonerated me".
"The taxpayers and those who earn their money through fair means and pay taxes should not be compared with the robbers and thieves," Khan added.
Pakistan has been roiled by military coups and instability for much of its 70-year history, and the general election due in 2018 will only be its second ever democratic transition.
Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which already holds northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, hopes to capitalise on Sharif's ousting and the disarray of his ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to gain seats.
Few observers of Pakistan's volatile politics are willing to predict with any certainty who will take the election, however.
Sharif swiftly installed party loyalist Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as prime minister after the court sacked him in late July following a corruption investigation spurred by the Panama Papers leak.
But Abbasi is widely seen as a placeholder as Sharif himself has refused to relinquish leadership of the party, despite being barred from contesting elections, leaving the PML-N floundering.
Its weakness was brutally exposed last month when it was forced to capitulate to the demands of small and previously unknown Islamist group that had held a weeks-long sit-in in the capital to demand the resignation of the federal law minister over claims linked to blasphemy.
Pakistan's third major party, the once-mighty Pakistan Peoples Party, has seen its fortunes plunge since its leader and the country's first female prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated a decade ago on December 27, 2007.
Her son 29-year-old son Bilawal, now chairman of the party, is trying to revive its political fortunes but few are gambling on it regaining its previous status in time for the polls.
If the PML-N does not recover, parties from the religious right could come together to fill the vacuum, tilting Pakistan yet further towards the Islamist extremism it has long grappled with.
