Pascal Mouawad, an internationally famous jeweler to the stars, has listed his Bel Air Mansion for sale at $15.75 million. Mouawad’s fine jewelry designs have graced runways and red carpets from the Oscars to Paris Fashion Week and worn by celebrities from Elizabeth Taylor to Britney Spears.

A Princess and a Popstar Walk into the Beyonce After Party… A Breakfast Chat blog by Kelly Cartwright The name Harry Styles evokes strong feelings in people not only on our little island, but around the world. For many, it’s a moistness in our knickers…. I jest, I jest! (But not really.) The boybander-turned-solo-crooner stole our hearts over 8 years ago during One Direction’s trial run on The X Factor and has since cruelly toyed with our tickers. There’s been flashes of the cheeky bad boy and the sexy rockstar, but nothing has twisted our hearts—or at least mine—more than boyfriend Harry. Boyfriend Harry has made a handful of appearances over the years, and now that we know he’s romancing Princess Bernie, I’ve seen a select portion of Directioners and Harries—and the general public as well, my postman is obsessed!—prep themselves for the return of boyfriend Harry. But before you sharpen your fanfiction pencils and sort out the power couple name (are we feeling Barry or Harnie more?) let’s evaluate all we know about boyfriend Harry. Harry has spent the last year and half touring the world with his debut solo album. Along with the world, he toured quite a few bedrooms. And each (admittedly short-term) relationship ticked all the same boxes. Before we dive into them, I want to make one thing clear—Styles has used these tricks for years, but five somewhat-public relationships in 18 months has made them glaringly obvious. 1. A Girl with Something to Gain: No one can deny the sweetness of Harry Styles and that sweetness clearly carries over into his relationships. Harry has a tendency, whether purposefully or not, to fall for women who could use a bit more exposure to tip their careers over the edge. Princess Bernie’s career is well set—she’s only going to be the bloody Queen of England one day—but she still has something to gain from being attached to the beloved British boybander—goodwill of the public. 2. Shirt Swap This one’s simple. If I had a Gucci shirt for every Gucci shirt Harry gave off his back to his besotted, I’d have a wardrobe to last a lifetime and five times more expensive than my current. Although, we have to admit, the princess did look well fit in his puffy pirate shirt. 3. The Promise Ring What promise that ring holds is a mystery, but it’s a matter of fact that Harry has a penchant for sporting his love-of-the-moment’s jewelry—particularly rings. I have a feeling in a few days time we’ll see Princess Bernie’s treasured gold Hermès painted ponies ring on a more masculine finger. 4. The Replacement Necklace But have no fear, Mr. Styles is a gentleman and always gifts the apple of his eye with a piece of jewelry from his own collection. Typically it’s a necklace, though his love tour saw a variety of bracelets and even watches exchanged. 5. The Family Engagement Ever the family man, Harry tends to bring his girlfriends home to mum within at least the first month and a half of dating. My guess is by September we’ll have a full walk in the park spread with mum, and by November sis will have a new bestie. But this is where it will get interesting. While Harry’s family is notorious for loving every girlfriend he brings home—and I mean every—the Royal Family is none too easy to please. I’m willing to sacrifice my firstborn to be a fly on the wall for the first meeting between King James and Harry Styles. And finally… 6. The Rumors Somewhere between 3 and 6 months, rumors will start to swirl on the internet that the two lovebirds find it difficult to be apart. Then it will be that his love’s career has taken off, and she just doesn’t have time to follow Harry on tour anymore. We’ll go a month without any pictures, and then the news will break that the couple quietly split six weeks ago, but they’re still close friends. Harry is always friends with his exes. After the breakup, Harry will jet off on tour again or maybe do another movie, meet a pretty model, and see step 1. Admittedly, the fact that Harry’s latest stop on the love train is an actual princess definitely throws a wrench into the groundwork I’ve laid. But I maintain we are seeing the same cycle repeat itself, with a major change. For once, Harry Styles will gain the exposure he always provides. I know, I know, I can hear you now—he’s the biggest popstar in Britain, Kelly! What’s he need exposure for? Well, I’ve done my homework and know that Mr. Harry Styles doesn’t have a single gig, chat show, or film booked after his last show in Australia this October. The worst thing in the world for the hottest popstar at the moment is to go on a extended break. Enter Princess Bernie, and the dormant popstar just got a lot more interesting.

I sat here and watch the preview and my first reaction AND THIS BITCH STOLE FROM BEYONCÉ. OH MY FUCKING GOD SHE STOLE FROM FORMATION. THIS WHITE FEMINIST MANIPULATIVE BITCH STOLE FROM BEYONCÉ FORMATION VIDEO. I am going to sit here and break this down for Y'all. For all you Taylor dick riders and super fans, stay off my page and stay off this post because I am spreading nothing but the truth.

First of all, when I first listened to the song, I was just disgusted. But then I watch the video and was like

She copied Beyonce in every way she could get away without making it blatant to white people, but not for me bitch. I saw that shit clear as day

Beyonce’s looks for each of the previous gifs was very intentional. The first one was to show imagery from slavery, slave masters and mistress, so rather than the black people being the slaves, they are the ones in power AS THIS IS A BLACK EMPOWERMENT SONG. In the video, she is the “master” and the men surrounded her which also alludes to women's empowerment.

As I previously stated, EVERYTHING BEYONCE DID IN THAT VIDEO AND IN THE PERFORMANCES WAS MEANINGFUL. It had a purpose. People who truly understand the cultural importance of Lemonade and of Formation wouldn't dare copy it for some white foolishness like this.

See the problem with this is that Taylor is a victim of her own choices and her own foolishness…Yet somehow the world continues to praise her

She is the one who lied about the Kimye situation, knowing damn well she heard the song. Her team was the ones who had to change their statement several tries. When Kimye threatened, and then followed through, with leaking the tape that exposed her, she was the one with her tail tucked between her legs and then yet again pulled out the victim card when she threatened to sue using the California Law about recording someone unknowingly.

She is the one who has been writing her music, or at least so she claims, which is the same music that has given her the reputation she has. She is the one who has disrespected and dissed almost every ex that she has had and wrote songs about their relationship. Even with Calvin, she could have gracefully ended the relationship and moved on but no she sat there and tried to diss him for not giving her credit WHEN SHE AGREED TO BE THE GHOST WRITER. But good for Calvin for clapping right back and telling her that she needs to worry about herself and stop trying to make others look bad.

She is the one who has done nothing to prove that she isn't a white feminist. In her current video, she used Todrick Hall as a dancer and while at eye level it doesn't seem that deep because they have known each other since her 1989 tour it’s deeper than that.

Todrick Hall is one of the most powerful voices on Youtube. Do you know what Todrick Hall is known for? A lot of things, one of them being his covers. He is also known for his love Beyonce which can be seen in his cover of the Evolution of Beyonce.

She is using Todrick just as she is using the rest of the black dancers in the video. This gave me flashbacks to Shake It Off

We have seen this time and time again. White people take the stereotypes portrayed against the black community and or people of color in general and mock them/copy them. And then they use black people of people of color in their videos/projects as if that means that the entire black community will give them approval. 

Many people call Todrick Hall, Coondrick Hall but that is a different post for a different user to explain to you but the doesn’t negate the fact that Taylor used him and the rest of the dancers. She used Todrick in a video where she copied Beyonce because she thought that meant she would get the black communities approval. 

In this song, she is addressing her reputation and how people view her and talks about how she’s different now. She is suing the powerful imagery from formation to whine and complain about problems she caused for her damn self if that doesn’t make your blood boil  I don’t know what will. 

But am I surprised?

This is no different than what most white feminist and white women do. They are so caught up in their own whiny first world problems that they ignore real issues. They use the culture of people of color for their own benefit. They act like they are the victims and black people are either their puppets or always out to get them. And she gets away with it. Every. Single. Time. Why? Becuase she’s white and has money and the world is full ignorant people just like her.

The one with the bechloe marriage proposal

After the USO tour, chloe and chicago got together but after a few months chloe didn’t feel right in the relationship, felt like they weren’t meant for each other that they never wanted the same things for their future, eventually the two broke up. chloe was devastated but sooner or later she found herself again, moved to LA and how funny it is that the place where she works as a music teacher beca ends up showing as a guest. The two caught up and talked about what a crazy ride the past few months have been and everything just went from there, it was like college again. The two were inseparable, almost did everything together again, fat amy started teasing them whenever chloe was in their apartment the two would just shrug it off of course but both of them knew that something was going on, and finally after 4 months of having that “closeness” again, beca got the courage to ask chloe out on a date and well everything just became easier from there. Now, being together for almost a year, On May 18th 2019 beca mitchell decides to propose to chloe beale. It was 8 am in the morning when chloe went for her daily run and beca was left at home making breakfast. Once she finally finished she opened her laptop and searched the jewelry store for a ring to propose with, forgetting to lock the door, fat amy comes in and sees the screen of beca’s laptop. “beca, are you?..are you finally gonna put a ring on it?” yes leave it to fat amy to quote beyonce in this moments “yes amy and please. Please don’t say anything.” beca had to beg. When they finally got the perfect ring and the perfect plan, beca didn’t want to wait any longer she wants to propose now, so she called chloe to meet her in the restaurant for lunch, with the ring in her pocket and the two of them there she was ready to ask but then somebody shows up. It was Chicago, with her new girlfriend and guess what? Chloe decides it’ll be fun for the four of them to eat at the same table. The plan clearly wasn’t successful and when they went home fat amy was there to greet them with congratulations , yelling let me see it and when fat amy saw beca doing hand signals that the plan didn’t work she really outdid herself this time “congratsss on the garbage chloe!that was what I was gonna say, see now I am seeing it is full now and your reward is me throwing it out, see yaa” chloe was definitely furious now, beca being all nervous during lunch and fat amy just well all that “beca what is going on?” beca was nervous, didn’t really know what to do “uhm nothing, you know amy, she’s spontaneous” chloe didn’t buy it for a bit “yeah sure, she hugged me and grabbed my fingers and took the garbage out, I thought she even said ring something” okay now beca lost her chill “ring?psh who needs those amirite?” chloe looks at beca wondering what has gotten into her “uhm I don’t know jewelry?marriage?” leave it to beca to blurt stuff out “marriage?who needs those?i mean look at us we’re perfectly fine right?why want one?” and with that it was chloe’s turn to lose her chill “why? It was 5 pm and chloe was nowhere to be found, beca searched for her everywhere, she’s got fat amy helping her and well she’s got Aubrey telling her to fix this or beca will die soon. They thought what beca did was well, stupid. Turns out chloe was at chicago’s house she didn’t really know where else to go. “I thought she wanted this, that we wanted this” chloe tells Chicago “chloe I loved you, and when I see you two together it was what I wanted for us to have but I wasn’t the person who you were meant to have that with, it was beca. I know what you want to do. Just go for it” chloe hugs Chicago and went straight back to hers and beca’s apartment. Not long after chloe left chicago’s home beca was there”where is she? Is she here? Chloe? Chlo let’s talk” she searched the whole floor and nothing “she’s not here beca” beca starts to examine the place “no, you see that on your table? That’s her drink, I know it!that coaster?only she would do that!She was here dude! You know this is unfair! You had your chance with her, and you blew it! So this is my chance and I’m not gonna blow it cause we are meant for each other. All this was just some big misunderstanding. Said she needs to think things through” fat amy tells her “no, no this can’t be happening “ her eyes were starting to feel heavy “I tried to stop her beca, I told her everything but she wouldn’t believe me” beca couldn’t take it any more longer “I just, I love her and now that’s just gone” she goes inside the apartment her eyes closed and cheeks all filled with tears but as she opens her eyes, there she was. Chloe, standing around a room filled with candles and as beca realizes that she was inside a whole new plan she moves closer to chloe who kneels down “beca, in all my life I never thought I would be so lucky, to be in love with my best frien..my best..”chloe started to cry before she can finish her sentence and beca knew this was the moment she waited for, she kneels downs together with chloe trying to comfort her and well herself as well “okay shh, no. it’s okay..I thought…that It mattered what I said or where I said it…but then I realize what matters..is that you, you make me happier than I ever thought I could be and if you let me I will spend the rest of my life trying to make you feel the same way.  Chloe, will you marry me?” she opens the box her and fat amy bought this morning “yes beca…YES” in that moment the two girls knew they couldn’t ask for more. A new chapter in their life was about to start. New barriers to break and new memories to make and to experience all that together, they knew that they we’re definitely meant to be.

NFL Airs Anti-Police Brutality Ad During The Super Bowl + Blackballed Colin Kaepernick Does Charity Instead + The Carters Criticized For Not Standing During National Anthem

There’s drama following Super Bowl LIV! (Shocker, right?) The NFL interestingly aired an anti-police brutality commercial during the game, sans blackballed player Colin Kaepernick. Find out what Kap was doing during the game, plus the controversy surrounding Beyonce & Jay-Z sitting during the National Anthem inside…

The behind-the-scenes drama seems to be just as entertaining as the actual game for this year’s Super Bowl LIV.

As we all know, the commercials that play during the Super Bowl are a big deal, so when an anti-police brutality ad popped up during the big game it def took folks by surprise. Like, the hypocrisy and irony is unmatched.

After blackballing former 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick for kneeling in protest of police brutality, the National Football League had the nerve to air an anti-police brutality commercial during the big game. The spot featured the murder of Botham Jean – a black man killed inside his own apartment by white cop Amber Guyger. In the clip, Botham’s family share photos and videos of Botham, explaining how the world lost a wonderful human being in a senseless act of violence.

  The commercial was good. There’s no taking away from the message of the commercial. However, isn’t this what Kaepernick was kneeling for? To bring awareness to police brutality?

In 2016, Colin Kaepernick started a silent protest where he took a knee during the National Anthem to help bring awareness to police brutality and racial injustices. His actions eventually resulted in the former QB being blackballed from the league, yet they air a commercial with the SAME message he has been trying to spread to the masses?

The ad seems to be part of the NFL’s initiative called Inspire Change, which is a campaign spearheaded by Jay-Z last year when he inked his deal with the league. The campaign is dedicated to “education and economic empowerment, police and community relations, and criminal justice reform.”

So why now does the NFL seemingly see the issue with police brutality, but didn't see the vision about why the NFL platform IS a place for this to be discussed when Colin Kaepernick took a knee?

It didn't go unnoticed:

  While his former team played in the Super Bowl, Colin Kaepernick was busy giving back!

The former NFL star made his way to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem yesterday where he spent time meeting the employees and touring the building. Then, he teamed up with Carolina Panthers safety/his friend Eric Reid and 100 Suits for 100 Men at the SCO Family Shelter in Jamaica, Queens to pass out suits to men. The organization 100 Suits for 100 Men is a non-profit that gifts clothing to men and women looking for jobs.

After that, Colin helped serve meals at the Shelter with help from the LES Girls Club and Know Your Rights volunteers.

She brought the ultimate shade to the MAGA Music Awards, I mean the COUNTRY Music Awards with a jeweled white ballgown, propped up titties, body jewelry, transcendent vocals, a full-ass country orchestra, and the damn Dixie Chicks! Hell, she kicked off Black History Month by announcing she’s bringing two more carefree Black babies into this world.

Then Sunday. Sunday. Sunday, February 12th in the year of our Lord 2017, in the middle of the 59th annual GRAMMY Awards, Beyoncé SHUT THAT SHIT DOWN! Her pregnant ass, cooking up two whole fucking human beings, stepped up on that stage and told e’rybody else to just go the hell home. It was a wrap. A damn WRAP. Whew! WHEW!

dex grew up with sisters (let me have this he has a bunch of sisters ok) so not only was he completely unable to escape one direction he was not allowed to get away with any sort of ‘bands that have mainly young female fanbases are not real music’ misogyny that lots of teen boys and adult males have 

so he likes 1d he doesnt advertise but he had to listen to them a lot so he knows their entire discography and what they have some good songs ok bro 

so yeah they find their way into his workout playlists so fucking what man they’re fucking hype songs 

his fave is niall bc hes chill and just wants to drink beer and play his guitar and listen to dad rock and he’s irish (dex is irish and is grandma loves niall bc she’s irish and what a sweet young lad) he’s not like die hard niall stan but he knows all of the 1d discourse from his sisters debating (im willing to listen to other opinions my back up is louis bc hes a punk) 

he save up one year (and got help from his fam) to get tickets for his sisters to see a wwa concert as a birthday/christmas/every holiday present bc theyre expensive and they dont have a lot of money 

his mom technically bought the tickets he just helped pay for them and the girls surprised him with a ticket for him to come with (mama poindexter: well i cant let them go alone who’s gonna watch them you have to go make sure they dont get arrested for doing something stupid) dex played it cool but it was such a fun concert and so fun to hang out with his sisters tooo

nursey now is a goddamn hipster u cant tell me he isnt into a bunch of british alternative bands and bc of his brit music phase he knew about one direction from the very start at the x factor stage (he definitely mentions this all the goddamn time when they start becoming popular but he chills out through the years)

hes been to at least one concert for every tour (he even got tickets to the madison square garden show) - he went to every concert with his sister but it was his idea to go and she was just there to keep an eye on him

also a big reason he got into the band was zayn like heres a pakistani muslim boy who’s super talented with these white dudes and that representation is super important (i also hc nursey as muslim or at least partially but zayn is a brown muslim boy killing it so yeah its awesome) 

but nurseys fave tho is harry especially when harry is a total hoe with long hair and jewelry and those red carpet looks like nursey is in love but also in awe bc those sparkly boots and that floral suit like those are iconic Looks™ and nursey loves it bc gender isnt real and he loves hoe looks (zayn is like 1.5 tho bc nursey is in love)

nursey tries to serenade dex with little things one day when they’re chilling by the pond on the grass and dex punches him bc nursey is making him emo even when he knows dex doesnt have emotions (in public in front of people who can see him cry)

bitty likes them they’re no beyonce but theyre fun and attractive and yeah hes gonna have some fun dancing to them he isn’t really up with all the drama and disc*urse until the boys have 1d nights and they watch this is us and the concert dvds bc he learns a lot 

he loves 2013 era harry and all the time liam (that boy is thicc and bitty 100% does not swoon)

he went to the tmh tour and he’s gone to every tour since - he goes with his sisters bc its a bonding topic for them he sits at the edge of the floor or at the end of a row on the sides bc hes so tall he feels so bad and he tries to stay out of the way of the little girls behind him but hes nice to them and talks to them and so they like him even if hes a giant

but really he and his sisters are so close bc they have a lot of similar interests and they talk about pop culture stuff and its hard to keep intouch when hes away so much but they have group chats about 1d and tv shows and stuff so its so nice for them to keep up a strong bonding time 

ransom is a britney bitch and holster dragged him into 1d. he’s in it for the memes and the drama really. (he likes the songs and thinks its fun but he wouldnt have been a fan and gone to concerts if it wasnt for holtz)

holster takes him to the wwa concert and they have a blast 

holster also drags his ass to see this is us opening night (they both cry)

chowder just loves everyone and he doesnt understand why people hate 1d (or other pop artists with majority young female fan bases that ppl hate bc misogyny) when theyre so fun he’s not an active /fan/ until smh has team bonding nights involving one direction jam sessions and concert dvd watching and drunk history

on such 1d nights they put on one of the dvds and it accidentally turns into a drinking game (mainly drinking bc this part of my god did u see that !!! THAT NOTE CHANGE !!!! and ZAYN WHY !!!! and other painful parts) and some of them *cough* nursey dex and holster *cough* get possibly the most drunk they ever get bc of this 

theres loud awful drunk singing along and some sobbing (this is definitely not based off of any sort of personal experience whatsoever nope never done this before) 

after the movie when everyone is so drunk they talk about 1d history which is how the veterans teach the others about the exciting drama and disc*urse  

lardo is a bad bitch who is tough as fuck and manages a division I mens hockey team and every single one of them is afraid of her. AND she would not let any bro tease her for liking one direction bc why the fuck not. 

she has plenty of their songs thrown in arting playlists and in pump up playlists 

and she knows theres nothing better to cheer holster up when he’s having a rough day than a 1d dance sesh 

dont forget where you belong is the first song on her team bonding playlist bc its a love song to ur bandmates which transfers very well to love songs to ur teammates 

shitty unapologetically loves 1d and boy bands and girl bands and he supports all things that young girls love but are not taken seriously bc girls like them 

he’s written at least 3 papers/projects on the misogyny surrounding young girls and their interests and involvement in fandom and also boybands (he tries to fight all guys who disrespect girls’ interests and the power of teenage girls)

he’ll randomly show up to a 1d night bc obvi he’s in that gc and he’s ready to party and express emotions and dance and talk drama 

he loves harry bc “THAT FLOW MAN!!! HIS FLOW IS SO SICK!!!”

he cried when harry posted the pic of the hair he chopped off and cried when he saw the another man shoot where harry was defying all sorts of societal norms it was beautiful and his flow is still so nice even this short its ok it’ll grow back better than before

one friday night the lax bros sneak over to try to prank the haus and peak in the window and see half of the hockey team in the living room drunk off their ass singing loudly to a one direction concert on the tv - holster and nursey jumping around attempting to dance along, ransom clinging to bitty on the floor crying about a ‘hiatus’, bitty soothing ransom, dex forgetting about the drink in his one hand to drink rum from the bottle, shitty naked (not surprising) and slow dancing with a life sized cut-out of harry styles with tears streaming down his face (more surprising), and chowder lying on the couch singing through mouthfuls of pie 

they walk back to the lax bro house without executing the prank and they never mention it again

She was raped, pregnant and married by 11 – now she fights to end child marriage in the US

TAMPA, Fla. – In Florida’s halls of power, Sherry Johnson is somewhat of an anomaly: a black woman who grew up destitute and survived child abuse.

Her story is shocking. Raped at 8 and pregnant at 10, she was forced to marry her rapist at 11. She had to abandon high school after the babies kept coming.

For years, she kept silent. But now, her voice rings clear in chambers where the state’s laws are made. Her unrelenting public pleas to end child marriage are being heard.

After a lifetime of struggle, Johnson’s time has come. Finally.

At 58, she sports a head full of thick, tight curls and a pantsuit that would make Hillary Clinton proud. She navigates the corridors of the Capitol with a black binder tucked under her left arm, a purse slung over her shoulder and a fierce look of determination.

Johnson makes her way past sepia-toned photographs celebrating Florida in the early 20th century, as though they were glorious times for everyone. Past the rows and rows of framed faces of lawmakers who gained fame within these walls.

“All men,” Johnson observes, as she dashes by.

On this winter morning, days into the 2018 legislative session, she is on her way to meet with a state senator co-sponsoring a bill to abolish child marriage in Florida. An identical version has been introduced in the House.

Johnson has spent the last five years lobbying lawmakers to stop the kind of abuse she suffered in her childhood. An effort to ban child marriage under the age of 16 got traction in the Florida House in 2014 but went nowhere in the Senate. Since then, Johnson’s words have fallen on deaf ears. Doors have closed on her. Until recently.

As incredible as this may sound, Florida stands poised to become the first state in America to say no, unequivocally, to all marriages of minors.

Last year, Texas and Virginia enacted new laws limiting marriage to those 18 and over, but they made narrow exceptions for minors granted adult rights by the courts. The bills before the Florida legislature set 18 as the age for marriage and allow zero exceptions.

In Suite 202 of the Senate Office Building, Johnson gets a hug from Lauren Book, a 33-year-old senator from the south Florida city of Plantation who herself is a child abuse survivor and activist.

Book has blond hair, a Florida tan and big, bookish glasses. Her walls are blanketed by inspirational quotations from Plato, Shakespeare and even Coco Chanel: “If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack.” She displays a brass desk plate that asks: “What would Beyonce do?”

“Sherry and I have a lot in common,” Book says.

“Until you put a face on this issue, people don’t understand,” she adds. “And Sherry has been that face. She has been able to destigmatize the process.”

Book signed on as co-sponsor of the Senate child marriage bill introduced by Lizbeth Benacquisto, a Fort Myers Republican and rape survivor. The two women legislators embraced the #MeToo movement and have been vocal on sexual misconduct allegations clouding the Florida Legislature.

In Book, Johnson sees an ally. If the bill passes, Johnson wants to stage a play based on her 2013 autobiographical novel, “Forgiving the Unforgiveable.” She’s also compiled a budget for a bus tour to promote awareness. She asks Book to help her brainstorm ways to raise money.

“When the bill passes, I want the community to know this has happened,” Johnson says. “I just want ideas. This is all so new to me.”

“You’ve been working so hard to make all this happen,” Book replies. “You have a lot going on. Take a break.”

“I can’t relax right now,” Johnson says without hesitation. “I’m on a journey.”

‘I’m coming out’

Child marriages are legal in every US state because of a hodgepodge of exceptions that let minors get married with parental consent or judicial approval. A majority of these marriages are coerced and involve girls marrying adult men, according to the Tahirih Justice Center, a national nonprofit group that tracks child marriage and aims to end gender-based violence.

The US State Department considers forced marriage a human rights abuse and, in the case of minors, a form of child abuse.

Though child marriages represent a fraction of all US marriages, the numbers remain significant. The Pew Research Center found that in 2014, nearly 60,000 15- to 17-year-olds were in marriages.

Few perceive America as a land where child marriage occurs; many think of developing nations like Afghanistan, Somalia and my homeland, India, which ignobly led the world with almost 27 million child marriages in 2017.

Johnson’s story is being told at a time when increasing numbers of women are feeling empowered to speak out about abuse. The women’s movement has been gaining momentum and has helped push forward child marriage bills. Besides Florida, a dozen other states have legislation pending, though not all would set a strict age floor at 18.

In Florida, Johnson has been instrumental. She has been vocal about the cruel story of her childhood. She hopes that one day soon, she might be able to stand next to the governor as he signs a child marriage ban into law.

That would be the vindication she has so earnestly sought.

There has been little opposition to the bill, though critics would still like Florida to make exceptions for minors who are voluntary participants or if their would-be spouses are in the military. Young servicemen and women sometimes want to marry their girlfriends or boyfriends before deploying on dangerous missions.

To that argument, Johnson retorts: If you are under 18, you cannot make any other legal decisions. You cannot buy a house, join the military, vote, rent a car or drink alcohol. How is it possible then to make a wise decision about entering into a legally binding partnership, one that is meant to be permanent?

Johnson leaves Book’s office brimming with excitement.

“You know that song, ‘I’m Coming Out’ by Diana Ross?” she asks as we climb into her car. She starts belting out the lyrics: I want the world to know… There’s a new me coming out. And I just had to live. And I want to give. I’m completely positive.

“This is exactly what’s happening,” she says. “People are coming out. My soul is so happy right now.”

She has ambitions to organize a conference for survivors of child abuse and child marriage, so they can express themselves in public, just like she did when she testified before lawmakers. “So they can get it all out,” she says.

She knows the importance of that firsthand.

A mother and wife by fifth grade

As a little girl, Johnson lived with her mother in Tampa in the back of the parsonage of their church. She was an only child.

Johnson and her mother belonged to an apostolic church and went to mandatory service six days a week, sometimes seven. Hats and long sleeves were required for the girls and women; they could not wear pants or jewelry. They behaved in accordance with strict church guidelines, and the elders told them what they could say or do.

Johnson’s mother spent little time with her. When she did, it was to bake biscuits and fruit pies for the church. There was no television in the house, but her mother would, on occasion, sit down with Johnson with a coloring book and pencils. That is the fondest memory Johnson has of her childhood.

Each day before school, Johnson sought out her aunt for lunch money because Johnson’s mother worked as a substitute teacher and could barely make ends meet. Her aunt lived nearby in the same house as the bishop of their church, and one day, when Johnson was 8, he summoned her into his bedroom.

I got your lunch money. Come and get it.

He forced her to lie on the bed, used petroleum jelly and penetrated her. He said nothing and then sent her on her way, blood dripping down her legs. Johnson ran to a bathroom to wash herself, but she was a child in the fourth grade. She could not understand what had happened.

After that, she was raped repeatedly by the bishop and also a church deacon. But when she tried to talk about it, no one believed her, not even her mother. It happened so frequently that Johnson accepted it as a part of growing up.

Her elementary school classmates cruelly told her she smelled like fish.

Several months passed when, one day in class, she was summoned to a room where students received their vaccinations. Johnson was confused. She never got shots; her church forbade them.

She was examined by a nurse and sent back to class. A few minutes later, she heard her name again, blaring through the intercom. She was to collect all her belongings and wait in the office for her mother to pick her up. What had she done wrong?

You’re going to have a baby, her mother blurted out in the car. Who’s been messing with you?

I tried to tell you, Johnson replied. But you said I was lying.

A doctor examined her and gave her the news: She was seven months pregnant. She did the math and knew it was the deacon’s baby.

Her mother stood up in church and told everyone her daughter was lying about being raped. She blamed Johnson for bringing shame on the family and sent her away to Miami with the bishop who had raped her. She was dropped off at Jackson Memorial Hospital and left there alone to have her baby.

On a February night in 1970, Johnson, only 10 years old, waited in a hospital hallway. She tried to imagine how a baby would come out of her body; no one had explained it to her. The stares burned through her; she felt like an oddity at an amusement park.

At 1:54 a.m., she gave birth to her first child. When she returned to Tampa, a child welfare worker came by to ask questions. She figures her elementary school must have tipped off the state.

The men who had raped her were adults and if the truth were to surface, they would face statutory rape charges. Instead, Johnson’s mother arranged for her daughter to marry one of her rapists, the deacon. She bought a white dress and veil for her daughter and accompanied bride and groom to the Hillsborough County courthouse in Tampa.

Johnson was 11. The man she was marrying was 20.

Johnson remembers sitting at a long table that seemed bigger than her house. She remembers her mother speaking with the judge. The judge refused to marry a girl so young, even though she had a baby.

But a month later, they tried again, this time in neighboring Pinellas County, where Johnson was allowed to sign on the dotted line. The judge was fully aware of her age; the license lists her date of birth.

She had not finished fifth grade yet on March 29, 1971, when she became a wife as well as a mother.

So began a life of burden, a life she was forced to accept.

Marriage before adulthood often has crushing consequences, undermining a girl’s access to health, education and economic opportunities. Girls and women in abusive relationships often suffer from low self-esteem and can fall into a self-destructive pattern of attracting more exploitation. Johnson was no exception.

At first, she returned to school while her mother looked after the baby. But her church prohibited the use of birth control, and Johnson had baby after baby.

Her husband abandoned her each time she was pregnant. She had no choice but to take him back when he returned after the baby was born. They lived in the same parsonage house with Johnson’s mother and slept in Johnson’s old bedroom surrounded by cribs.

Girls her age played with baby dolls. Johnson found herself with real babies.

She washed diapers, cleaned the house and cooked one-pot stews. Her husband rarely spoke with her; she was just there for sex. They struggled to pay the bills.

She was too young to know how to act, so she watched married couples in church and mimicked their behavior at home.

She loved studying and even skipped a grade one year. As it turned out, school was the only normal thing in her life. But that, too, was taken from her. She made it somehow to the ninth grade but then could go on no longer. By the time she was 17, she was raising six children. She never knew what it was like to play sports or go to the prom or graduate. Robbed of her childhood, she lost all motivation.

Every day when she woke up, she cried.

It was her husband who should have been handcuffed, she thought. She felt she was handcuffed instead.

She grew tired of her husband’s lack of support and sought help from Legal Aid. They wrote her a check for $75 to pay an attorney to file for divorce. But not long after, at 19, she married a 37-year-old man. He, too, hurt her verbally and physically. She bore three more children and was 27 when her youngest daughter was born.

By then, Johnson felt the weight of nine children — five girls and four boys — and an abusive husband pulling her down. She was frustrated, tired, bitter and, most of all, angry that this life had been forced on her. It began to affect her relationships with her kids. She hollered and fussed at them more often and tried her best to remember they didn’t ask to be born. It wasn’t their fault.

She smiled on the outside, but inside she was always crying.

She felt worthless and even contemplated driving her car off the Howard Franklin Bridge that spans Tampa Bay.

It was only after she left her mother’s church that Johnson was able to start healing. Through a new church, she met a psychologist, Joan Gaines. The two women began talking. It was the first time, really, that anyone had listened to her.

It had taken almost half her life for Johnson to find her voice.

Forgiveness

Gaines described Johnson as a smart, resilient woman who was keen on setting herself on a better path. She was like a round-bottomed roly-poly toy: No matter how many times you knock it over, it comes right back up.

“She was a child with nine children,” Gaines said. “She began to grow up much later in her life.”

Gaines, too, was an only child, but she had a happy childhood. Johnson’s mother’s actions were beyond comprehension.

“You don’t have to be nurturing to be a mother,” Gaines said. “All you have to have is a vagina.”

Johnson leaned on Gaines and looked inward. She turned to her faith in God, and she learned to forgive her rapists, her mother and, most important, herself.

It was time, she realized, to escape the dungeon of bitterness that was sapping her energy. The past was hurting her because she had chosen to hold onto it.

For Johnson, forgiveness was the only way to move forward, the only way she could speak freely about what she had suffered so she could save others.

‘The whole state of Florida failed me’

Hours after her jaunt to the Capitol, Johnson makes her way across town to see Tommye Hutto, a 78-year-old woman curtailed by rheumatoid arthritis.

Playing lobbyist is Johnson’s passion, but her job as a private caregiver pays the bills. She also had been teaching behavior-challenged children at an elementary school but gave that up to focus her energy on the legislative session.

Hutto retired as communications director for the California Teachers Union and moved to Tallahassee to be near her daughters. She lives by herself in north Tallahassee, needs assistance around the house and is one of several elderly clients Johnson sees.

The day before, Johnson helped a woman in her 90s who can no longer fend for herself. Johnson fixed her a dinner of fish sticks and steak fries and then wrote out a checklist: Make sure the bed rails are up on both sides in the highest position; insert an extra pad in the adult diaper for absorbency; check that her life alert is around her neck; empty the trash; tidy the house.

I watched Johnson intently before blurting out the obvious question: “What’s it like to take care of people after you did nothing but that all your life?”

“Well, I have to earn money somehow,” she answered.

She took this job, she explained, because caregiving is what she’s good at. She raised nine children, after all.

She moved to north Florida in 2008 after she remarried again. She and her third husband ran a barbecue place together in Tallahassee. But that marriage, too, ended in divorce.

Johnson could have returned to Tampa, where all her children were. But that was when she felt a calling. She felt compelled to share her story to make things better so no one else would have to endure what she had. She did not want her obituary to be confined to mother, grandmother and divorcee. She stayed in Tallahassee and launched her crusade.

She turned a small third bedroom into a home office and surrounded herself with her achievements. They serve as reminders that her life is no longer broken: a volunteer of the year award, a congratulatory letter from Michelle Obama on her book, a high school diploma from Franklin Academy. Johnson took classes online and at the age of 55, marched in the school’s 2015 commencement ceremony.

By her desk is a card one of her sons sent her on Valentine’s Day. “Of all the moms in the world, you are by far the best the world has seen.”

Despite her struggles, Johnson has no regrets about having her children.

“I still feel like I did everything I could do as a parent. I gave it my best shot with what I had,” she said. “I don’t feel less than a mother.”

At Hutto’s house, her motherly instincts kick into gear. She fixes dinner for Hutto and plops down on the living room couch. It feels like a long day after her rounds at the Capitol.

Sometimes, the two women watch “Wheel of Fortune” together. Tonight, they decide on conversation instead. They discuss the tribulations of aging and one of their favorite foods: fried chicken from the Publix deli. And, they talk about the one thing they have in common: being an only child.

“I guess there’s good and bad to that,” Hutto says.

“What’s the good part?” Johnson asks.

“Well, you get all the attention. You get to choose what you want. It’s fun.”

“I don’t know any fun part,” Johnson says, raising her eyebrows.

Hutto knows most of Johnson’s story and was, like others, in disbelief that such things could happen in America. She’s glad to know the child marriage bill is well on its way to becoming law and that it’s getting attention.

“What caused you to start advocating?” Hutto asks, her curiosity piqued.

Johnson mentions her book and a non-profit she launched to support abuse victims after she began speaking at small gatherings and realized the need.

Hutto says she knew of one girl in her high school who got pregnant, had her baby and then came back to school. But she didn’t get married.

“Did you know there were over 200,000 child marriages in America in the last 14 years,” Johnson says. “Over 16,000 were in Florida.”

“That’s amazing,” Hutto replies. “I had no idea. How did we not know?”

Johnson brings up her own case.

“The hospital knew. The school knew. The courts knew,” she says. “So plenty of people knew, but nothing was done. The whole state of Florida failed me.

“I feel my life was taken from me,” she says. “The ones who were supposed to protect me, didn’t.”

No response seems appropriate in this moment, and seconds pass in silence. Johnson looks down and takes a slow bite of fried chicken.

In a few days, she will be back at the Capitol, making her rounds — and hoping that the state that failed her will not fail again.

She recently collaborated with @barbie and has one of my most fav IG accounts ever. ⚡️CHRISSY @chrissyteigen- Started out as a model in the OC, then modeled on Deal or no Deal, was a Maxim Hometown Hottie, to Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover- as well as Cosmo, Instyle, Vogue, Glamour, etc… She is a NY Times bestselling author and co-host of Lip Sync Battle. She created a best selling @beccacosmetics makeup palette this year and also designed a clothing collection with @revolve .  She also has a weird obsession with playing Mario Odyssey 🤷🏽‍♀️. ⚡️MARY @1maryphillips- Studied beauty in High School and went on to assist at Senna Cosmetics.  After years of paying her dues, she started working on her own with Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Lopez, the Kardashian Jenner sisters, Gwen Stefani, and Maxim’s hometown Hottie Chrissy Teigen. She is the Queen of glowy skin and knows every cute dog IG account to follow🐶. ⚡️HRUSH @styledbyhrush - Started doing makeup in her bedroom as a hobby to becoming a beauty and fashion powerhouse.  She works with Karrueche, Cassie, Christina Aguilera, the Kardashian Jenner sisters, and Shay Mitchell.  She’s hosted beauty tours around the world and launched a best selling palette with Tarte.  Get her some 1942 and you’ll have the best night of your life🍾. ⚡️AIMEE @songofstyle - studied Interior Architecture before starting her blog in 2008. She also taught Autistic children at her church every saturday for 4yrs.
