Celebrating Beverly D’Angelo: A Hollywood Icon Turns 73

Today, November 15, marks the 73rd birthday of the beloved actress Beverly D’Angelo, a Hollywood mainstay whose charm, talent, and versatility have graced screens for over four decades. Born in 1951 in Columbus, Ohio, D’Angelo began her artistic journey with aspirations in singing before transitioning to acting, where she quickly made a name for herself.

The Sentinel

I first saw Michael Winner’s THE SENTINEL (1977, Shudder, AMC+) in a TV print with large-scale cuts that rendered it virtually incomprehensible. Watching the complete version certainly makes the plot more coherent but doesn’t exactly alleviate the general, all-around rottenness. One of those all-name (if not star) films Hollywood loved back in the 1970s, it suggests that it takes nine Tonys, six Oscars and another 17 nominations to make a film this bad. Of course, it’s not fair to lay all the blame on the actors. The lion’s share goes to Winner, whose direction and screenplay adaptation carry a lot of fetid weight even the best actor couldn’t counterbalance.

After two suicide attempts, model Cristina Raines insists on a spending at least a year living alone before she’ll marry her fiancé, crooked lawyer Chris Sarandon. The only furnished place she can find in her price range is an historic Brooklyn brownstone. But soon she’s plagued by strange nocturnal noises and even stranger neighbors, although the rental agent (Ava Gardner) informs her the only other tenant in the building is a blind priest (John Carradine) living on the top floor. In fact, the building is owned by the church for purposes I dare not divulge.

The film views corruption as the source of horror. The problem, however, is where it locates that corruption. There’s no issue with making Sarandon a crooked lawyer. But the non-existent neighbors include a flaming queen (Burgess Meredith) and a pair of lesbian exhibitionists (Sylvia Miles and Beverly D’Angelo,and I wonder if D’Angelo lists her movie debut as “masturbating lesbian” on her resume). From there, the film also presents corruption in the form of age, mild obesity, infirmity and physical disability. Hell, even Meredith’s cat is corrupt (though given my Charlotte’s habit of waking me up at 5 a.m. to give her breakfast, that may not be a bad idea). And what’s the only hope for fighting this corruption? Why, it’s the Catholic Church, a plot element that hasn’t aged very well, though with the plot’s outcome, it wouldn’t exactly have seemed a ray of sunshine back in 1977 either.

The best thing about THE SENTINEL is probably Gil Melle’s score. He was brought in to replace John Williams, who wisely left to work on STAR WARS (1977), and Melle wisely models some of his music cues on Williams’ style. As for the actors, Sarandon does his best. Raines is a charming comedienne, and she commits to the big emotional moments. But she has problems sounding genuine on normal, everyday lines. For them she has a singsong, whining delivery that makes her seem more bad local newscaster than character. Most of the veterans chew a lot of scenery, with Miles, who’s usually deliciously camp, annoyingly so. Only Arthur Kennedy, as a priest, and Gardner have the wisdom to underplay, so they tend to steal every scene they’re in. If you’re good, you’ll spot early appearances by Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Charles Kimbrough, Tom Berenger and Nana Visitor. I even caught three actors from the late, still lamented ANOTHER WORLD.

My first time in LA, Paul picked me up at the airport. “Wanna go to a party?”

He took me to Zsa Zsa Gabor’s husband’s birthday party. They lived in the house where they just filmed the HBO Liberace movie, the pool still had piano keys around it and an L in the middle.

It was a kitsch field of dreams. Sid Krofft, Beverly D’Angelo, Allee Willis, Buzz Aldrin’s ex-wife and the puppet Madame.

Every room had gold-framed portraits of Zsa Zsa. The was a velvet-roped smoking section. We had soft pretzels and European meats.

That night, he took me to a tribute concert to Lance Loud (of The Mumps & An American Family).

Holly Woodlawn, Cherry Vanilla, Maria McKee, Rob Zabrecky, Ann Magnuson - people so mythically cool that I couldn’t believe they existed in real life.

We finished the evening by having frozen yogurt popsicles and watching the Paul Lynde Halloween Special. Could not ask for a better day.

High Spirits (1988)

Good heavens! High Spirits is not what I would call a good movie. Yet, what it lacks in refinement is more than made up for by campy stupidity.

The plot is something like Beetlejuice meets A Midsummer Night’s Dream; different groups of characters with their own drives and interests set in a “magical” locale.

Peter (Peter O’Toole) and his mum run a hotel out of a dilapidated castle in Ireland. Business is not great - they need a new “hook” to get tourists interested. Cheekily they hit upon the idea of marketing the place as haunted and convince the staff to rig all manner of tricks to frighten the next crop of guests.

The Americans arrive as a series of types:  Jack (Steve Guttenberg) and Sharon (Beverly D’Angelo) are the bickering couple; paranormal investigator Malcolm has brought his family along while he investigates the hotel; Miranda (Jennifer Tilly) is just a single, lonely girl on vacation, and Brother Tony is a just single lonely priest (Peter Gallagher).

Unbeknownst to them all, Castle Plunkett really is haunted by Mary Plunkett (Daryl Hannah) and her betrothed Martin (Liam Neeson), repeating their ghastly wedding night over and over – the night that Martin killed her.

One evening Jack stumbles upon this murder loop and interrupts it, hijinks ensue!   

The production design of the film is lovely. Of note, the castle lobby set is used very successfully to stage many scenes and gives you a real sense of the looming quality of the place without being scary. Bubbly but gray. The costume design is also expertly used to distinguish between the main groups: the locals, the tourists and ghosts[1].

It’s not the kind of film I associate with Neil Jordan who had just done Mona Lisa before this and would go on to release The Crying Game a few years later. At the time of High Spirits release, Siskel & Ebert panned it – no one liked it really.

I thought it was a silly bit of fun.
