I give many shits about your opinion Vinnie! 🔥 🔥 🔥 x men
uwu thanks! im still getting into the xmen but basically here are my thots:
claremont is not a good writer lmao! he should not be praised for his work when he made kurt/amanda a thing, made kitty/piotr a thing, and did a bunch of racist shit w/ dani, karma, and betsy just to name a few.
i dont love the mutants are oppressed thing tbh, if it was consistent and focused more on the oppression of actual oppressed ppl and not cishet white dudes w/ powers then id probably be more ok with it but ig marvel can only feel empathy for white boys pain.
i wish lgbt women got more attention in xmen comics. the only lesbian mutant i can think of is karma and she does not get good treatment. there is also roxy washington but you rarely see her. mystiques bisexuality is almost never acknowledged, it makes me :(
idk if this counts as an unpopular opinion but like kurt wagner would not be white if he wasnt blue. there is no way of knowing what kurt would look like if he wasnt born blue but that doesnt mean that he would automatically be white. white is not the default and as a pee oh see im claiming him. i personally think kurt would be romani bc he was raised by a romani woman :/
this goes more for comics in general but we need to give characters their curls back. kurt, kitty, wanda, roberto are just a few i can think of that lost their curls and it rlly just makes me mad. not everyone has fucking straight hair and the fact that they made the features of jewish ppl and poc more eurocentric is disgusting and it needs to stop. it maybe be superficial but i have huge curly hair and i would like to see myself represented lol (also ik kurt isnt technically a poc but like he just looks better with curls)
this could also go out to comics in general but like new hero/civilian relationships dont stick that well. bobby has been out for a while and hes had a lot of relationships in that time but none of them have stuck. idk if hes still w/ judah but it doesnt matter bc ill support bobby no matter what but it doesnt create an emotional attachment. ppl get attached to preexisting characters and you could introduce a new character and make it work but it’d require effort and the care of everyone involved. if you want to create attachment for a certain ship, then all the xmen writers have gotta to agree that this is a ship that theyll support. they dont all have to write into their stories but the romance has to exist outside of a self contained book. also comic companies shouldnt be afraid to make more than one character gay at a time. the reason why ppl rally behind ricstar is bc they were established characters w/ an established relationship and fanbase and when their relationship became romantic, it felt organic. it didn’t feel that organic w/ bobby and judah imo

Lists:
LGBT+ Fiction LGBT+ Anime Yuri Manga LGBT+ Film & Comics
Part 2 of LGBT+ Fiction because I’ve had some free time to finish a few more books. Under the cut for length, and for this batch, it is mostly bi or lesbian fiction. Enjoy.
Titles/Author: Tides/ Betsy Cornwall Genre: YA, [urban] fantasy, romance Relationship(s): f/f The Good: likable characters, solid plot, quick and easy read The Bad: villain was a bit wimpy Extra Notes: selkies! how can you go wrong with that? also grandma lesbians. Warning: eating disorder mention. Personal Rating: 8/10 Recommend: Yes
Titles/Author: Summer Prince/ Alaya Dawn Johnson Genre: YA, romance, dystopian Relationship(s): m/m/f, m/m The Good: lively and fast moving plot, interesting world building, good characters and motivations, character development, writing style is easy and pleasant to read The Bad: unnecessary sex scenes, tension falls flat, okay ending, world building holes Extra Notes: unlike coda I feel this one is enjoyable regardless of whether you like the genre or not but I’d be hesitant to recommend to readers under 16 due to inappropriateness. also, it is based on brazilian culture (I believe), which could be problematic, but I don’t know enough about it to know myself. A reviewer said it was “so tumblr” and I have to agree it has that vibe to it in some ways. Personal Rating: 8.5/10 Recommend: Maybe, see notes
Titles/Author: Serpentine/ Cindy Lo Genre: YA, romance, fantasy Relationship(s): f/f The Good: easy read, fast paced, solid plot, emphasis on sister-sister bond as the main relationship The Bad: not necessarily bad but the book felt mediocre for the genre in pretty much all aspects, not a huge fan of the male lead Extra Notes: the sequel sounds more exciting tbh Personal Rating: 7/10 Recommend: Yes
Titles/Author: Santa Olivia/ Jacqueline Carey Genre: adult fiction, dystopian, paranormal Relationship(s): f/f The Good: unique writing style, diverse support cast, likable protagonist, subversion of genre tropes, romance had conflict The Bad: beginning dragged and threw off the pacing, ending was good enough to be satisfactory but could’ve been better with a tenser climax Extra Notes: liked the book a lot but have no interest in reading the sequel Personal Rating: 8/10 Recommend: Yes
Titles/Author: Fingersmith/ Sarah Waters Genre: historical fiction, crime, psychological thriller Relationship(s): f/f The Good: fairly true to the setting and time period, characters are very realistic and a bit gritty, plot and narrative have a unique twist, ending was satisfactory The Bad: big drag in the beginning of part two where it basically is a re-telling of the end of part one, gruesome and graphic in places, hard to get into at the beginning even though the set-up is extremely important to the plot, language is a bit difficult until you get the hang of it Extra Notes: I watched the movie The Handmaiden first, so I had a good idea what was coming at me. Fortunately, it is not as gruesome and disturbing as the movie is, but unfortunately it is still full of potential triggers and uncomfortable topics. It is also an extremely long book (600 pages). Sex scenes, allusions of rape, mentions of torture, etc. I enjoyed it and rammed through it in two days but I just can’t imagine the general populace wants to read this book without an interest in the dark and macabre. Personal Rating: 8/10 Recommend: No
Titles/Author: Iron & Velvet/ Alexis Hall Genre: paranormal, detective Relationship(s): f/f, background m/m The Good: fits genre expectations, quick read, lots of action and excitement The Bad: it is a little over the top with some of the supernatural stuff, side characters aren’t that great Extra Notes: This book was gaudy as all get out but a ton of fun and lots of witty lines. I don’t really think it is the kind anyone will re-read but it is a fun book for entertainment value alone. Sex scenes, lots of casual mentions of sex and wanting to have sex. It reminded me of fanfiction circa 2010. Personal Rating: 7.5/10 Recommend: No, unless you like the genre or fanfiction circa 2010
Titles/Author: Star-Crossed/ Barbara Dee Genre: YA romance Relationship(s): f/f The Good: completely age appropriate, addresses real life topics frankly, super cute, likable characters The Bad: predictable (for an adult or well-read children would probably be fine for most kids), Shakespeare is overused and that seemed to make it more cliche than it actually was Extra Notes: This is one I was looking forward to and it didn’t disappoint. It’s really rare to find a young adult written for younger teens and this was written perfectly to suit the age group. It is super cute and very positive without washing things over with rainbows and sunshine. Real-life problems are addressed, acknowledge and dealt with, which I always appreciate in a story. Personal Rating: 9/10 Recommend: Yes, if you’re 12-14 or a parent or a childrens’ librarian or just want a cute read
Titles/Author: River of Teeth/ Sarah Gailey Genre: alternative history; bio sci fi Relationship(s): hard to qualify but there is a gender fluid, gender binary and 2 bi characters along with bi x nb relationship vibes The Good: Interesting premise, fast paced, distinctive characters, lots of tension, subtle but not non-existent romance The Bad: It’s a novella, so it’s short. Some of the action at the end, while well-written, was still confusing to visualize mentally. A few editorial bloopers. The characters aren’t as fleshed out as I’d like but it is a novella, so yeah, expected. Extra Notes: I read this while waiting for my stupid computer to update. It is a novella not a novel, so it is short. But it is extremely well paced and the balance between action and dialogue is well done. There is death and there is knife play and people having unfortunately accidents with hippos. There is a sequel, which was also good, but for completely different reasons (much heavier on the romance). Personal Rating: 9/10 Recommend: Yes, unless you are afraid of hippos
Titles/Author: A Place to Rest/ Erin Dutton Genre: romance Relationship(s): f/f, background m/m The Good: A light, quick read with a realistic flavor that doesn’t get too heavy. Very cute premise and heavily character-centric with nice arcs. Obligatory hot cocoa scene. The Bad: The pacing dragged a bit, the side characters were pretty stock. There were some repetitive elements that came off clunky in execution. Nothing terrible just seemed like the author is a bit inexperienced in a few areas. Extra Notes: This, to me, read like a slow burn coffee shop AU fanfiction, so if you like that sort of thing, you’ll really enjoy this book. I, personally, enjoyed the fact that there was family-centric tension that wasn’t omg you’re gay! and instead focused on normal sibling problems. Also, I liked that the protag was in her 30s because a good chunk of recommended reads for queer books are YA and at some point its nice not to read about teenagers. Sex scenes. Personal Rating: 8/10 Recommend: Yes
Titles/Author: Letters Never Sent/ Sandra Moran Genre: romance, historical fiction Relationship(s): f/f The Good: Well constructed and interesting plot, realistic premise, suitable twists, lots of pertinent and salient issues, queer history in the US midwest The Bad: Not a lot. There are 2 main characters, a mother and daughter, so it does waffle between the past and present time, which isn’t balanced perfectly and could have stagnant spots. Extra Notes: Honestly, I’d like to find a lot more adult books like this one. It hit my radar as a Must Read, and I don’t always care of Must Reads, they tend to be hyped from a small pool of mediocre. This one was worth it but... on to the warnings: sex scenes, homophobia, internalized homophobia, rape, abortion and murder. Nothing was gritty, in fact, the story itself is serious but not overly important about it. Personal Rating: 9.5/10 Recommend: Yes

the hamilton sense8 au no one asked for
each character has a very specific oneshot in my mind because sense8, duh but ....i’m also... not a writer?? (so this is quite the struggle)
...anyway.
afrolatino nonbinary closeted bisexual burr is lito: a good ass lawyer. his parents still died, he still went to school and climbed the ranks, he’s still passed up for the top position for not being able to pick a side (he meets alex at the coffeeshop {of course} bellamy works at) and is presented with the choice to face his fears head on
cis, very Latino, very gay alex is hernando: he’s a politician and openly bisexual. (they can’t be public yet and alex is understanding but burr knows it’s not fair) he’s still an immigrant from the Caribbean who climbed the ranks. he gets a lot of interest and hate for his “social justice warrior” policies (he’s gotta protect his home and his love, y’all) and his angry twitter rants against resident republican @ tom “rich asshole” jeffery have a strong activist following
cis, latina and chinese {?? crap sorry i can’t remember exactly but based off @fanciful-follies’s} bellamy is dani: I’m giving her mcnugget fic backstory but replace nuggets with coffee and switch the roles. Burr calls Alex immediately after and tells him the whole thing. Bellamy’s (call me bella) dating history and family life are Not Good. [i dont want to erase that it takes place in mexico but also alex’s story is americanized. i know very little about how he and the ot3 be received in mexico] (aka the ot3 parallel (theoburramy) that got me thinking about this whole thing, but hamburramy fit better for everyone else, whoops)
marquis de lafayette (stage name) (deadname: gilbert) (chosen names: marie and yves, look at what color hair tie they’re wearing today for pronouns) is wolfgang: French underground performer (her thing is to Laugh...cuz laf? she’s not necessarily an activist but by being who he is she makes at the statement and so why not work it? His music brings a smile to your face) might sounds crusty tbh? i’ll work on it) is very much biracial, pansexual and genderfluid. family was encouraging and accepting but the world is cruel. he fought hard to be who she is and is so glad he found someone who loves and accepts her in herc muslim, indian/black, trans woman (based on @stonerjohnlaurens’s lesbian lams au) herc is kala: her parents were not accepting and completely cut contact, (we didn’t raise you this way, don’t come back unless you will stop this nonsense) when she came out in college. it was a little before she was to study abroad and so she just...stayed in europe? she wasn’t in a position to fly back after what happened, i mean, she had no home to go back to. The whole ordeal made her question a lot, including her faith. but over time her siblings contacted her with very fierce support and updates on family life. She’s been able to heal, to build a life here, to find love and a home (with marie, today) and to find herself too. She mourns the loss of what she could’ve had with her parents but she’s found support in her faith, in laf, and her siblings and friends. Herc and Marie are happy together and love each other and that’s all that matters {we needed more mullete fluff everyone} [they’re in france]
maria is riley cis biracial (black and white) cis, lesbian: Voice of an angel, ear to match, she’s a musican and also plays piano. She’s been through a lot of trauma in her life (domestic violence, lost a child, car accident) she’s left james reynolds and is...rebuilding. angelica (african american black, cis, lesbian) is will (but only with the backstory of being a cop, [john church is her partner] since i *really* do not like will as a character. They go on dates and take it slow eventually connecting to each other’s trauma (angelica’s father was a cop and abusive to her mother, her mother took her and left, she was raised by her mother and the extended family: auntie margarita) it’s slowburn otp and it takes a lot of trust to get to that point but they are together now and taking it a day at a time
[they’re in the american south]
laurens is sun latina korean cis lady laurens, she fell for a girl at a tournament and her rich family found out and immediately disowned her. she fled the area with what she little she still had and lives/scrapes by all by herself (with her pet turtle). she does a lot of meditation to keep her anger down but never stopped doing martial arts. she’s an unsung champion...she doesn’t talk about her family at all in interviews but if you catch her at the right moment alone she might mention it’s nice to be away from everything. she quietly donates winnings to helping homeless lgbt youth. ...she’s pretty much a lesbian icon with a small but loving tumblr, korean, latina, gay, maritial arts following (she really should be more popular but #racism #sexism #homophobia etc) [based almost exactly on sun’s backstory so probably still americanized, more research needed, but she’s in south korea] theodosia (black, cis, lesbian) is neets (facecast is nicolette), (trans girl, biracial chinese, white) eliza is nomi and they’re so happy y’all!!!! they met at a pride speed dating event and hit it off right away. eliza is in the medical field (midwifery?? pediatrics?? nursing?? idk but she’s always loved children). and theo had a very busy work life but dating was not really working out for her, hence the event. they’ve been together for a while. there’s been lots of close calls with shitty transphobic, lesphobic assholes but they got through it and their love is stronger then ever. little cis girl theo (teddy) is loved by her moms and (latino trans boy) phillip is in the process of being adopted
(his biological parents being {of course} non au betsy(eliza) and alexander (hamilton), of course, where they fell in love way to hard and fast, and betsy wanted kids (their marriage was doomed from the start, he cared too much about his work,) alexander is a terrible father (absent and cheating). betsy would’ve taken phillip but just the thought of being a single mother was overwhelming (god, she's too young for this, she should’ve listened to her sister, his wings can only go so high before they burned)...but regardless, she *wasn’t* ready. thus phillip got taken in (by the state????). [i have no idea how the actual process works and so this is just a general idea]
[the theoliza clan are not american, but they met the hamburramy ot3 at some point and keep in contact via internet magic?] biracial (black and white), cis, asexual, polyamorous, african peggy is capheus (everyone forgets her but that’s okay because she loves herself, her identities and her life and that’s all that matters also she can totally fuck you up (both in a fight and her looks) and she loves her momma and takes care of her but at the same time she’s going to go out into the world (looking for some minds at work) with her best friend james madison (who happens to be very gay, and also hiv+) at her side (jeffmads is endgame here) peggy eventutally ends up with [facecast are the ensemble members for martha and dolly in blow us all away reprise] dolly (poly, currently with a very loving boyfriend, their love is 3 people strong now) and then eventually martha. (aka the ot4 of your dreams) both relationships have combined into a great big cuddle puddle tbh.
#hamilton musical#hamilton fandom#sense8#fic prompts#fic#i think i can at least try to write burr's#it's the scene between nomi and lito at the museum#i have a fic name and everything#but i hope someone else will roll with it too#also feel free to call me out on any sketchy parts or abuse of cultures that aren't mine#hamilton sense8 au
