Houseboat (1958)
My rating: 6/10
Surprisingly nuanced depiction of grief, for a 50s rom-com - so like, not that nuanced, but An Attempt Was Made at least. Overall, it hasn't aged all that well, but it's certainly better than I expected.

Kim Novak at Cannes in 1956 (pics 1 and 3), the year she was voted American number one box-office star and Queen of the Cannes Film Festival.
She came again in 1959 (pic 2) as her film In the Middle of the Night was presented. Cary Grant had been separated from his third wife, the actress Betsy Drake, since 1958. The romance between Grant and Kim Novak was one of the highlights of the 1959 Festival.

Cary Grant
Métier : acteur
Né(e) le : 18/01/1904
Date de décès : 29/11/1986
Pays : Royaume-Uni
Signe : Capricorne
Biographie

Last scene from “Every Girl Should Be Married” (1949), starring Cary Grant and Betsy Drake. The Episcopal minister is wearing gray. Please note that. NEVER black! Always gray. (Hollywood simply reflected reality.)

Day Five- Film: Room for One More
Release date: Jan 26th, 1952
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: comedy/drama
Director: Norman Taurog
Producer: Henry Blanke
Actors: Cary Grant, Betsy Drake
Plot Summary: George and Anna (Grant and Drake) have a nice simple life with three young children.  When Anna takes a tour of an orphanage for a women’s group, she is greatly moved by the older children who are hard to find homes for. She decides she wants to be a foster parent. George has reservations, but a pre-teen “problem child” named Jane moves in. Jane begins to flourish, and now Anna wants to bring another child home. How will George ever agree to it?
My Rating (out of five stars): ****
I don’t really like kids or movies about kids, but I found this film surprisingly winsome and charming. Much of the credit goes to Grant and Drake who are both so likeable. Drake captivated me- she's not a traditional Hollywood beauty exactly, but you clearly sense all of her warmth and intelligence under the surface. I couldn’t decide half the time if I would want her to be my mom or my girlfriend! (Which is a little weird...) Grant is gorgeous and shows off his perfect comedic timing here. A running joke throughout the film is that he wants to have some "romantic" time with Anna (i.e. get laid), but she never has the time or attention with all the kids around. I can’t imagine any woman pushing Cary Grant away! I’d find a spot anywhere for even ten minutes, for god’s sake! Grant and Drake were actually married in real life, and they have a really sweet chemistry. The stories of the foster kids were so touching, I had to wipe my eyes several times. And the youngest of the biological children was an expert scene-stealer who was perfect when playing off of Grant.
