Remaking X-Men: Evolution (Roster)
(Just thought I'd repost this!)
Tumblr media
I’m a big “Evolution” fan, and here’s my own version of it based on a reshuffled roster (and costumes; I hated the uniform look). Check out my episode-for-episode remake of the series in my other posts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really love young Cyclops’ outfit in “X-Men: Blue” (without the X's) and young Jean’s in “Extraordinary X-Men” (but maybe without here gold mask); they’re awesome while showing that they’re teens. Any green costume where Rogue wears a hood just fits her personality, while Nightcrawler’s is fine as-is, but make the navy blue parts black. Storm would be a teen in this version (to give her more screentime/development) and her “X-Men: Red” look is ideal. Magik, Iceman, Prodigy, and Havok would be replacing Shadowcat (who’s with the New Mutants in my remake), Wolverine and Beast (who are still there as instructors), and Spyke (who doesn’t exist here). Magik’s Infernus look is underrated, Iceman and Havok’s Hellfire Gala looks should be reworked into costumes (I love the patterns), and Prodigy’s “Young Avengers” costume works perfectly--except replace the black with another color (maybe silver or more yellow) to stand out from Storm.
And apologies for the suggestive pictures; they’d obviously be covered up and less sexualized in my show (including covering Storm and Magik’s midriff). I do imagine them growing up as adults later with different costumes, though! I’d also include personality changes (make Kurt stop using street lingo, tone down Rogue’s gothic character as the result of absorbing others and them rubbing off on her, giving Scott a hero complex and EXPLORING that, etc).
As for the Brotherhood...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Magneto would be in his Excalibur outfit for most of the series, since I feel like it feels more authoritarian, and his Asteroid M plan would’ve had better foreshadowing to help make him a more understandable and sympathetic villain. Destiny would take over for Mystique as the leader of the Brotherhood whenever she was unavailable, and wears her classic costume (Mystique’s is unchanged). Pietro’s feelings of insecurity would be explored more, and I’d scale back on Wanda’s gothic look a bit, going for a Dr. Strange-inspired look and giving Pietro an updated look. Toad would wear a costume inspired by Mortimer Toynbee while Avalanche’s costume would remain the same–except replace that bowl on his head for a domino mask. I’d also be replacing Blob with Gambit (who wears his solo look from Gambit vol 5), Psylocke (specifically Betsy to avoid the controversial body swap), and Daken (in a cowl-less version of his Wolverine look). And since Gambit is part of the Brotherhood, Polaris has his spot in the Acolytes, being Pietro and Wanda’s older sister in this version.

Oberlin Women in Leadership: Betsy Mix Cowles
Tumblr media
Betsy Mix Cowles (1810-1876, OC 1840) was an abolitionist, suffragette, and educator. She attended a local district school in her home state of Connecticut and later the Grand River Institute in Austinburg, Ohio before she began teaching. After studying infant schools in New York, she founded and ran an infant school for young children between 1832 and 1833 in Kinsman, Ohio. Infant schools eventually became known as kindergartens. Beginning in 1835, she served as the leader and secretary for the Ashtabula County Female Anti-Slavery Society. Cowles was passionate about the anti-slavery movement and gave many speeches arguing for the abolition of slavery in the mid and late 1840s. She also fought against “Black laws,” that prohibited African Americans from voting. After her father’s death in 1835, Cowles enrolled at Oberlin College, where she graduated in 1840. After graduating, she was made the first dean of women at the Grand River Institute, a position she held from 1843 and 1848. In 1848, she was appointed the principal and teacher of the female department of a grammar school in Massillon, Ohio. She was the superintendent of a girls’ grammar school in Canton, Ohio between 1850 and 1855. Cowles was a strong supporter of women’s suffrage. In 1850, a Women’s Rights Convention was held in Salem, OH, and Cowles presided over the convention. She also attended the Akron Women’s Right Convention in 1851, where she spoke about the need for equal pay for working women. She became a member of the Ohio Woman’s Rights Association in 1852. In 1857, she began working at the McNeely Normal School in Hopedale, OH. She retired in 1862, although she continued protesting against slavery during the Civil War.

Cary Grant and Betsy Drake with Fleur Cowles enjoying an indoor picnic, 1956: “My husband and I were in Spain when Cary [Grant] was filming “The Pride and the Passion”. Our picnic on a hill overlooking Toledo -interrupted by rain—was brought back to the hotel at Cary’s insistence. Betsy [Drake (left)] and I kept our hats on. The waiter thought we were mad!

WHO: Warren Worthington III, Archangel
WHAT:  Warren shares a body with someone who wants to see the world burn, and he just broke out of the cage in their mind! All of us rebuked and punished! He will execute judgment!
WORD COUNT:  1391
What is suffering?
It takes on an infinite amount of forms — always looking for new and creative ways to bring more pain into someone’s life. Everyone experiences it differently, but Warren has been through something nobody should ever have to. He wasn’t thinking about all the battles the X-Men have fought in over the years, agony endured from those injuries was in a separate category of it’s own. This is about something that stays with him because En Sabah Nur ruined him.
Warren is forced to share his mind and body with another who has gone by many names over the years.
Death.
Harbinger of Destruction.
Horseman of Death.
Archangel.
His existence isn’t known to many, unless they were unlucky enough to cross paths with him. This wasn’t another side to Warren, not some darker part of his personality. NO, Archangel was a completely different person. The two of them are cursed to share this vessel because Apocalypse wished it. Nothing about what happened was fair, any peace that Warren knew was gone. He never wanted to play a hand in the lives of innocent people dying. While they’re two separate people with two separate personalities — they’re stuck in the same body. Their looks are different too. When Angel loses control nobody can tell because of the appearance of Death resembling nothing like Warren. Which is definitely a good thing to avoid blame being placed for whatever carnage is unleashed.
One time Archangel got managed to crawl his way back out — a random small town got blown to pieces, not a single soul was spared. The guilt weighs heavy thinking about all the innocent lives lost for some scheme that En Sabah Nur wanted done sooner rather than later. The last time Death got control, several people got beheaded and left in a pile of their own blood purely for antagonizing him. He wasn’t afraid of anyone, ready to unleash neurotoxin infused feather blades down on anyone who dares to get too close, but Warren’s best friends have always been the biggest threat to bringing Angel back. SCOTT, JEAN, BOBBY, HANK, and LAURA all to be kept at a distance when Archangel is calling the shots.
Warren doesn’t normally acknowledge that Death was always there in the back of his mind. He has gotten to a point where it was possible to ignore the whispers in the back of his mind most hours of the day. Immense stress of any kind was like a gateway to Archangel to claw his way out of his cage. Which means that Warren would need to maintain his anger under all circumstances. He was good at this, but it doesn’t mean that the whispers don’t go unnoticed when there’s nothing else to distract him.
It usually happens at night, or when the situation is quiet enough that his focus is drifted toward his thoughts. The difficult part about sharing your mind with another means that you can hear everything that each other thinks. Warren knows that Archangel is always waiting and plotting something. He‘s constantly coming up with unique ways to hurt everyone around them in preparation for being let out again. Warren doesn’t want to ever let that happen, holding onto control the best he could thanks to the telepathic therapy sessions he had with Betsy. Although Death wasn’t too fond of someone else poking around in their head, so doesn’t welcome telepaths kindly.
Warren is forever bonded to a psychopath that thrives off of violence. Angel is the harbinger of hope, while Archangel is the harbinger of destruction.  They couldn’t be more opposites if they tried to be, like mirror images of the other.
The meaning behind suffering is different for everyone, but Warren has experienced it more than most would expect since it’s a SECRET only told to his fellow Mutants primarily unless he would trust someone to share his trauma with them. He remembers what it was like being chained up while Apocalypse did this to him. Sometimes it even keeps him awake at night. He went back and visited it once, seeing the blood-stained rock always bringing back those bad memories.
Today started off as one of Warren’s better days. Which is a surprise considering everything going on right now in the world. He was soaring through the sky for about half an hour now when something didn’t feel right. He was used to Archangel clawing away at the walls of their mind, but this was an entirely new feeling. It felt like fire slowly burning into his torso, making a home between his ribs. Warren recognizes this as FEAR, an intense emotion if he would let it get the best of him. Any normal day he might have been able to fight this, making the effort to learn to control his anger and anything that could risk bringing Death out of his cage.
PANIC starts to settle in.
His feathered wings flapping to keep him hovering in the sky, out of view from everyone else in the city. The thing Warren is most afraid of is Archangel getting control. It would feel like you’re locked in a soundproof box. He could scream for help all he wants, but his voice won’t reach anyone unless a telepath happened to be trying to read their thoughts.
Warren sees the blue pigment appear in his hands before his clothes are being torn into shreds. All of his belongings were back at home since there was no need for his phone when just his intentions were only to enjoy being among the clouds.  Warren even left his balcony door unlocked since he would be back for an evening nap. Now Archangel’s uniform starts to slowly appear over his arms, stretching across each inch of their body as the transformation starts to take place. “No, no, no! Why is this happening now?”
He’s scared for once in his life.
Warren doesn’t know what to do except to shout loud as his voice can let him before he’s silenced. “JEAN! CHARLES! BETSY! HELP ME — ARCHANGEL HE’S — !” The message rings several times in his head hoping that any of them would be able to hear him due to the connections they’ve made. It was better than not doing anything. His blonde hair is covered by a cowl to match the rest of this distasteful uniform while his eyes changing to be yellow against Archangel’s blue skin. Everything about Warren is being replaced, and some tears fall down his cheeks as his feathers turn into metal — sharp blades ready to slice into anyone that gets in Death’s way.
Warren is gone. It was his turn to sit in the darkness watching as another will pilot their body. He could either choose to relive his old memories by clinging to the past as a twisted version of comfort, OR watch what Archangel is doing. Warren hates feeling useless — like no matter how hard he fights it just wasn’t possible to win. He can’t do this on his own.
“Your friends can’t help you. They won’t be allowed to ruin this for me again. l don’t have intentions on relinquishing control.” Archangel is speaking calmly, his voice deeper than Angel’s. Which is another difference that the two of them have. Whatever is going on through the city won’t affect Death. He would prefer to witness the chaos happening, maybe even contribute to see what Humanity is capable of since the last time he got to observe them.
The Horseman of Death swoops down to be closer to the streets, deciding to have a little FUN. One of his wings smashing into the side of a random skyscraper while passing by so the glass shatters, and starts falling to the street below. It was amusing to watch all of the people run off like a heard of sheep. His feet positioned on top of a nearby streetlamp watching the chaos unfold with a straight face. Archangel doesn’t care how many of them got hurt in the process. “Pathetic. You can all run, but won’t be able to escape when your end comes.“ He was going to enjoy his freedom as long as the X-Men stay out of his way. There was so much to be done if the world would be rebuilt.

For the week of 28 October 2019
Quick Bits:
Afterlift #1 is a digital original from Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, and Aditya Bidikar. Very interesting concept here playing with a character who drives for a Lyft analogue in Cabit, leading to becoming a rather unique courier.
| Published by Jams & Jellies
Tumblr media
Batman Annual #4 actually gives us many adventures and stories as we go through almost two months’ of diary entries of Batman’s exploits from Alfred, as told by Tom King, Jorge Fornés, Mike Norton, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles. It’s a nice way to pack a lot of story into this annual in a fairly unique way, while also showcasing just how busy Batman really is.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Black Panther #17 sets up for the next confrontation with N’Jadaka and his forces, also giving us a rather...awkward but interesting conversation between Storm and Nakia. Gorgeous art from Daniel Acuña.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Bloodshot #2 continues the balls to the wall action as Bloodshot and the Black Bar conflict escalates, from Tim Seeley, Brett Booth, Adelso Corona, Andrew Dalhouse, and Dave Sharpe. It’s a bit of a throwback to a more action-oriented style, but it definitely works for Bloodshot. A nice change of pace to give a variety of storytelling.
| Published by Valiant
Tumblr media
Conan the Barbarian #10 spins us the twins’ yarn as they plotted their revenge on Conan, from Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham. The art from Asrar and Wilson is gorgeous. The backstory building up to last parts of this story and the fate of Conan is gripping.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Contagion #5 brings an end to this series from Ed Brisson, Adam Gorham, Veronica Gandini, and Cory Petit. Gorgeous and creepy art here from Gorham and Gandini.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
DCeased #6 is surprisingly hopefully, even as everything dies and everybody hurts. It appears to be setting up a sequel, though likely to be incredibly bleak. Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Neil Edwards, Stefano Gaudiano, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte conclude this series in epic fashion as we say goodbye to Earth.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Death’s Head #4 is another ending to a series this week, from Tini Howard, Kei Zama, Felipe Sobreiro, and Travis Lanham. Some very nice character work here for Death’s Head and Vee.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange Annual #1 gives us a pair of tales. The lead from Tini Howard, Andy MacDonald, Tríona Farrell, and Cory Petit is a fun Halloween story dealing with the spirits haunting the Sanctum Sanctorum. Any art from MacDonald is a treat. The back up is a bit more deadly serious with Pornsak Pichetshote, Lalit Kumar Sharma, Sean Parsons, José Villarrubia, and Petit revealing a failsafe should Strange go rogue.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Ether: The Disappearance of Violet Bell #2 continues to be incredibly inventive as Boone tries to track down the assassin. David Rubín’s art is absolutely amazing. And Boone’s continued inability to really think about anyone other than himself is telling.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Excalibur #1 is another tick in the win column for “Dawn of X”. The X-Men dabbling in magic isn’t common, but Tini Howard, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit do so with amazing flair, fittingly taking us in through Otherworld, Captain Britain, and Betsy Braddock. Apocalypse’s new incarnation as  “ •|A| •” and his newfound interest in magic is fascinating.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Five Years #5 spotlights Zoe’s rather elaborate imagination for coming up with ways to murder people. Granted, the Russian agent may well deserve it, but still... Terry Moore continues to deliver some unexpected twists as the end of the world inches closer.
| Published by Abstract Studio
Tumblr media
Giant Days: As Time Goes By #1 is a one-shot finale special from John Allison, Max Sarin, Whitney Cogar, and Jim Campbell. It picks up roughly a year from the end of the series, dealing with why Esther has been missing from their reunions. It’s full of all of the humour that we’ve been used to and hammers home the power of friendship. Also, it gets very, very weird.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / BOOM! Box
Tumblr media
Harleen #2 works hard to portray Harley’s seduction by the Joker. Stjepan Šejić and Gabriela Downie portray it as an insidious, manipulative thing. It might appear romantic on the surface, but there’s definitely a darkness there. There are ideas of bringing back a monster from the edge of insanity, but the story makes you realize that some may well be beyond hope.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label
Tumblr media
Hellboy and the BPRD: Long Night at Goloski Station might well be the best of these new format tales yet, and both of the previous ones were incredibly strong. Here Mike Mignola, Matt Smith, Dave Stewart, and Clem Robins deliver a single issue story building on Hellboy’s confrontation with Baba Yaga, Sir Edward Grey, and demons.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Invisible Kingdom #6 begins the second arc, “Edge of Everything”, as the crew first try to find food and fuel and then run afoul of a salvage ship. G. Willow Wilson, Christian Ward, and Sal Cipriano keep things interesting as we start to see the crew’s life after Lux.
| Published by Dark Horse / Berger Books
Tumblr media
Invisible Woman #4 is disturbing, basically everything goes to hell and everyone that Sue was trusting to see this operation through has let her down. Or worse. Mark Waid, Mattia De Iulis, and Joe Caramagna set up a rather horrifying situation in this penultimate chapter. Again, De Iulis’ artwork is stunning.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Joker: Killer Smile #1 is essentially a psychological horror from Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino, Jordie Bellaire, and Steve Wands. It comes from the point of view of a psychiatrist, Dr. Ben Arnell, who is trying to get to the heart of Joker’s mental state. It’s not going so well and it appears like the good doctor is losing time, doing strange things, and possibly worse. Very intriguing beginning to this story.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label
Tumblr media
Knights Temporal #4 has some stunning artwork from Fran Galán, particularly during the gangster sequences where colour comes into play as another important storytelling element. There are some very nice twists this issue, making you wonder about a lot of what we thought we knew.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
The Last God #1 is dark fantasy done right by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Riccardo Federici, Sunny Gho, Dean White, Tom Napolitano, Steve Wands, and Jared Blando. It gives us lying kings, heroes who weren’t rightly heroes, and a Lovecraftian terror returned to show the truth. It plays deep on resentment and distrust, and of a complete failure of institutions to uphold a decent society. All with absolutely stunning artwork from Federici, Gho, and White. This is a beautiful, haunting work.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label
Tumblr media
Last Stop on the Red Line #4 is very, very weird. We get a peek behind the masks of the monsters and it’s even stranger. There’s a very interesting mix of symbolism and the supernatural where we’re really not sure where one begins and the other ends. This was a very unique series from Paul Maybury, Sam Lotfi, and Adam Pruett.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Mall #3 goes even harder into inter-faction warfare as it seems like all of the groups are at one another’s throats. Great world-building here from Michael Moreci, Gary Dauberman, Zak Hartong, Addison Duke, and Jim Campbell, with some interesting plot developments.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Manor Black #4 concludes the series as we see what essentially amounts to order vs. chaos as the old blood takes on wild magic. This doesn’t feel so much as a conclusion as an end to a chapter of a wider arc, leaving much unresolved. Hopefully we see more. The artwork from Tyler Crook is phenomenal.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Marvel Zombies: Resurrection #1 is really damn good. Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Leonard Kirk, Guru-eFX, and Travis Lanham kick off this series with a new angle on the Marvel Zombies, playing up more on the horror angle, with a truly terrifying spread of the disease through a new vector. Gorgeous artwork from Kirk and Guru-eFX.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Monster Planet #1 is the kind of thing that you used to see regularly published by Image and Top Cow, the military action comic that throws in horror elements, from Joe Brusha, Marcelo Mueller, Maxflan Araujo, and Taylor Esposito. It’s not bad, setting up a world where humanity has been turned into dinosaur-like beasts and the remnants of society need to turn to classical monsters for help.
| Published by Zenescope
Tumblr media
The Necromancer’s Map #3 takes a bit of a different approach, giving us a fair amount of action as Tristan’s Will catch up with Bethany and co. as well as some great character building in between the action. Great stuff from Andrea Fort, Michael Christopher Horn, Sam Beck, Ellie Wright, and AndWorld Design.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
The Plot #2 is wonderful horror storytelling from Tim Daniel, Michael Moreci, Joshua Hixson, Jordan Boyd, and Jim Campbell. Very creepy build of supernatural events once Chase Blaine and his family arrive back at his ancestral home. Hixson and Boyd’s presentation of the black, gooey masses are also disturbing.

Queen of Bad Dreams #5 concludes this excellent series from Danny Lore, Jordi Pérez, Dearbhla Kelly, and AndWorld Design. Rather interesting confrontation with and revelations about Eleanor Chase here.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Red Goblin: Red Death #1 is a one-shot featuring three stories set during Norman Osborn’s tenure as the Red Goblin at the end of Dan Slott’s run on Amazing Spider-Man. It’s kind of weird that it doesn’t instead tie-in with current events in Absolute Carnage, but it’s not bad for what it is. The art of the first two stories from Pete Woods is great.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Relics of Youth #2 is even better than the first issue, delving deeper into the mysterious tattoos that the kids have been branded with and their connection to the island that they’ve landed on within the Bermuda Triangle. Matt Nicholas, Chad Rebmann, Skylar Partridge, Vladimir Popov, and AndWorld Design are telling a very compelling adventure here.

Roku #1 begins another mini-series focusing on one of the luminary villains in the Valiant Universe, this one from Cullen Bunn, Ramón F. Bachs, Stéphane Paitreau, and Dave Sharpe. It’s full of action and intrigue as Roku is hired by an unknown client to retrieve...someone. Things get more interesting as a new face stands in her way and we find out the unusual nature of the target.

The Sandman Universe Presents: Hellblazer #1 is a homecoming of sorts for John Constantine, back to his old haunts alongside some of the other Vertigo corner of the DC Universe. Si Spurrier, Marcio Takara, Cris Peter, and Aditya Bidikar spin a yarn that reconstitutes John after a massive magic war led by an evil Tim Hunter. How exactly the pieces fit are anyone’s guess, but it’s a brilliant darker take resetting him here.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label / The Sandman Universe
Tumblr media
Savage Avengers Annual #1, though largely a self-contained story, is still integral to Conan’s adventure through the Marvel universe and the overall narrative as he, Hellstorm, and Black Widow stumble across a human trafficking ring that bears the marks of Kulan Gath. Gerry Duggan, Ron Garney, Matt Milla, and Travis Lanham deliver a compelling story.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
SFSX #2 does further world and character building, showing us just how much has changed since the Party took over, and how utterly betrayed many of the people from the Dirty Mind felt of Avory abandoning them. Very interesting stuff from Tina Horn, Michael Dowling, Chris O’Halloran, and Steve Wands.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Silver Surfer: Black #5 concludes what has been a very trippy series from Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles. There are some very interesting revelations of the past here, and it really makes you wonder about the Surfer’s new incarnation.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Star Pig #4 concludes the series, kind of, from Delilah S. Dawson, Francesco Gaston, Sebastian Cheng, and Shawn Lee. There’s some rather disturbing tentacles in this one.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle #5 brings an end to this round of the series. I think it’s a perfect approach for some all ages “ghost stories” within the Star Wars universe. Wonderful resolution for the framing story from Cavan Scott, Francesco Francavilla, and AndWorld Design.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: The Death of Superman #1 is the second of these one-shots spotlighting DC events gone horribly wrong, this time giving us a much angrier Lois Lane’s grief at the loss of Superman to Doomsday. Jeff Loveness, Brad Walker, Drew Hennessy, Norm Rapmund, John Kalisz, and Clayton Cowles present her as vengeance against a world that didn’t deserve Superman’s grace, raising some of the questions that you’d often see in The Authority. Only, you know, kind of evil. It’s not bad, but definitely dark.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #99 is the extra-sized penultimate chapter of “City at War” as all of the pieces begin falling into place for the grand finale. The story here from Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, Tom Waltz, Dave Wachter, Ronda Pattison, and Shawn Lee feels truly epic and that something huge may just happen next issue. As it is, there’s still a ton of action here, some interesting developments with the Rat King, more disappointment when it comes to Raph, and something new with the mutagenic bomb.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
Test #5 is very strange. Christopher Sebela, Jen Hickman, Harry Saxon, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou end this story as Aleph and Laurel find one another and a new way is planted, but there’s still seeds of something going awry.

Venom #19 largely plays out the end bits for the Maker and Dylan’s portions of Absolute Carnage, with some very interesting revelations. It seems like even bigger seeds are being lain for future stories here. Great art from Iban Coello and Rain Beredo.

Tumblr media
Witchblade #16 gives us the fight between Alex and Haley, after a few distractions and discursions. The stakes are pretty high here and there are a few rather tense moments as it plays out. Beautiful art from Roberta Ingranata and Bryan Valenza.

Tumblr media
Wonder Woman Annual #3 is largely a flashback tale, set five years ago as Wonder Woman and ARGUS attempt to extract an agent sent to infiltrate Gorilla City to see the legitimacy of Grodd’s rule. What Steve Orlando, V. Ken Marion, Sandu Florea, Hi-Fi, and Pat Brosseau do with is establish a new backstory and interpretation for a very old Wonder Woman foe in a fairly interesting way that even ties in to Event Leviathan. It may strain a bit of credibility for the villainous turn, but that will largely depend on the follow-up.

Best of Marvel: Week of April 24th, 2019
Best of this Week: Avengers #18 (Legacy #718) - Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, Justin Ponsor and Cory Petit
I love the Squadron Supreme.
I loved their original appearances as the Squadron Sinister, the later Squadron Supreme series, the Supreme Power series from Marvel Max, it’s sequel and the 2016 Squadron Supreme series that I felt ended way too early with so many good stories to tell.
I understand that these characters aren’t necessarily the most popular,  but they are still Marvels best DC analogue and the fact that they keep trying to trot them out means that they have some semblance of faith in these guys, especially as antagonists to The Avengers
The book begins with short introductions to the Squadron. Mark Milton is a mild mannered American History Teacher excited about teaching his students about the country he loves so much before rushing off to face the danger brought on by the War of the Realms as Hyperion. Kyle Richmond is a Congressman in Washington DC but when the Frost Giants attack he becomes the cowled hero, Nighthawk. Zarda Shelton is an MMA fighter that wears a necklace given to her by her people on the Utopian Isle that dampens her powers, but won’t need it as she becomes Power Princess. Stanley Stewart is your everyman American with many a blue collar job thanks to his speedy powers as The Blur and Joseph Ledger is an astronaut who found a colored prism that gave him amazing abilities as Doctor Spectrum!
What I loved best about this is that throughout the book here’s this unsettling feeling of American patriotism from each member of the team and it’s not until we see short vignettes about the  Squadron, as they fight and kill invading Frost Giants on American soil, that we get a glimpse into what this team is about.
They seem to have been manufactured by some secret project that Thunderbolt Ross used to run, now manned by a resurrected Phil Coulson. Both Hyperion and Power Princess seem to have had their love for America planted into their minds as well as some small modifications to their personalities. Mark appears to be the golden boy American and Power Princess is just a sexy badass that loves him. Nighthawk is as distrustful of his bosses and Coulson as any Batman analogue should be and that's the way they want him to be, saying he’s best when he’s brooding.
Quite honestly though, I love their characterizations as uber American superheroes, not even venturing into Canada once they run the Frost Giants out of the American Border. It reeks of Making America Great Again as Coulson remarks that it “isn’t their job to keep the world safe, just the best little part of it” to his mysterious and heinous benefactor who I won’t spoil.
This does make me wonder what happened to most of the other versions of the Squadron members that are still in the 616 Universe, however. I know Nighthawk died and Deadly Nightshade wears the costume now, but what happened to trucker Mark Milton, Inhuman Doctor Spectrum and Blur who became a SHIELD agent? I'm sure we'll get answers, but this team still more than satiated my desire for more Squadron Supreme.
Not only is this little side story great, but Ed McGuinness’ art is superb. These are the most imposing Hyperion and Nighthawk have ever been, even back in the days of King Hyperion. Power Princess looks both sexy and threatening as all hell. Blur looks delightfully insane and Doctor Spectrum is a colorful mess of crazy. Facial expressions are devious and full of certainty in regards to the mission and the violence they display against the Frost Giants is absolutely brutal. This Squadron is not afraid to get their hands dirty in the name of freedom and I’m excited for their eventual clash with the Avengers.

Blob is one of the worst Mutants.
Runner Up: X-Tremists #3 - Leah Williams, Georges Jeanty, Roberto Poggi, Jim Charalampidis and Clayton Cowles
He’s a crass, unfunny, douchebag who most commonly serves as a heavier, dumber and less cool Juggernaut. So, imagine my surprise when this series presents him as a well mannered, well-read man with a sense of gentleness and honor to him. I love Blob this way and it is going to hurt when he inevitably change back.
In X-Man’s world, love is discouraged and any action towards those feelings warrants arrest and memory wiping from the X-Men’s Black Team/Secret Police, Department X. In the last issue Blob revealed that he had feelings towards his co-worker, Psylocke aka Betsy Braddock. This causes him to leave his job briefly until she shows up to his house and explores her own feelings towards him, crawling across his table all sexy like and saying she’d see him tomorrow.
He returns to his job and spends most of the day distracted by the slight gazes he gets from Betsy and the irritation from Moneta, a junior member of Department X. She far too eager to stomp out any retrogrades, a slur for people who express loving feelings, and prove the existence of a Resistance, especially after a call about a wild party some teenagers are throwing.
After a long day he tries to get to bed but is woken up by Betsy knocking on his door. Acting as some sort of date, she asks to read some of his favorite books, mostly books that arouse different feelings, mostly of anxiety and interestingly enough, judgement and philosophy in regards to The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot of which Age of X-Man shares some thematic elements with.
Betsy tells him of her former struggles with her body image and how she enjoyed being in Kwannon’s Asian body because she is beautiful, but not her own. Blob assures her, much in his old crass way that he’d “sell out any member of Department X for a chance to %&%# her forever.” In a way, this is weirdly adorable as they both laugh and genuinely seem to enjoy each others company, especially making fun of Moneta at the end.
The team later investigate the party talked about earlier and fight a bunch of teenagers who refer to them as The X-Tremists. Soon after defeating them and rationalizing that they didn’t actually break any laws, Moneta reveals that she was the one who made the call to get rid of the “dangerous” retrogrades. This, combined with Moneta’s treatment of a pregnant prisoner, draws the ire of Blob who fires her in anger, earning the respect and adoration of Betsy.
Age of X-Man continues to toy with the idea of an imperfect utopia whose ideals are so flawed that even those whose entire duty is to erase memories and quell uprisings are starting to see the cracks in the walls. Though Blob isn't the most central character, this is definitely the most interesting he's been in years and I really hope that he remembers his time here once all returns to the way it was. He hasn't been a good or great villain in a long time, so maybe like Toad, it's finally time for him to switch sides and continue macking on Betsy.

Frustrations Boil at Tempo of Vaccinations at Lengthy-Time period Care Services In mid-December, a high Trump administration official floated an attractive risk: All nursing dwelling residents in america could possibly be vaccinated in opposition to the coronavirus by Christmas. “It’s actually a outstanding, outstanding prospect,” Alex M. Azar II, the secretary of well being and human companies, declared. It turned out to be a fantasy. A month later, vaccinations of a number of the nation’s most susceptible residents are going extra slowly than many state officers, trade executives and households anticipated. Their hopes had been buoyed when authorities officers stated long-term care services could be on the entrance of the road for vaccines. CVS and Walgreens, that are largely accountable for vaccinating residents and staff in long-term care services, are on monitor to make at the least preliminary vaccination visits to just about all nursing properties they’re working with by Jan. 25. The 2 pharmacy chains have already given out greater than 1.7 million vaccine doses at long-term care services. However the progress is uneven throughout the nation and never practically as complete for various kinds of long-term care. For instance, hundreds of assisted residing services — for older individuals who want much less care than these in nursing properties — don’t but even have an appointment for his or her first go to from the pharmacy groups, largely as a result of states have given such services decrease precedence of their vaccine-distribution plans. “I’ve had services name me, and I’ve had individuals cry, I’ve had individuals curse, as a result of this was the primary signal of hope that they’ve had in lots of, many months,” stated Betsy Johnson, who leads a bunch that represents Kentucky’s nursing properties and assisted residing services. “It’s simply human nature to suppose, ‘OK, however I used to be presupposed to be first — and I don’t even know when my clinic goes to occur,’” Ms. Johnson stated. In Pennsylvania, groups from CVS or Walgreens are usually not scheduled to go to some nursing properties till February, and the overwhelming majority of the state’s assisted residing services haven’t but been scheduled for a primary go to, stated Zach Shamberg, president of the Pennsylvania Well being Care Affiliation. “There’s a substantial amount of frustration, there’s a substantial amount of apprehension, as to when or if this vaccine will come,” Mr. Shamberg stated. The tempo of the vaccination program has taken on larger urgency because the quickly spreading virus continues to decimate nursing properties and comparable services. The virus’s surge since November has killed about 30,000 long-term care employees and residents, elevating the overall of virus-related deaths in these services to at the least 136,000, in response to a New York Instances tracker. For the reason that pandemic started, long-term care services have accounted for simply 5 p.c of coronavirus circumstances however 36 p.c of virus-related deaths. Even because the vaccination marketing campaign accelerates, the struggling is unlikely to wane. The approaching months could possibly be “the deadliest of the pandemic” for individuals residing and dealing in long-term care, in response to an evaluation launched on Thursday by the Kaiser Household Basis. The Trump administration introduced in October that it had teamed up with CVS and Walgreens to steer a federal effort to vaccinate residents and staff at long-term care services, among the many first eligible teams. On Friday, CVS stated it had given out simply over a million doses in additional than 12,000 preliminary visits to long-term care services. Almost 8,000 visits are scheduled for the approaching week. Walgreens stated it had given out practically 750,000 doses in practically 9,000 visits to services, largely nursing properties. The variety of visits that Walgreens has scheduled with assisted residing services “continues to speed up,” an organization spokeswoman, Rebekah Pajak, stated. The vaccinations by CVS and Walgreens have been at all times anticipated to take a number of months due to the necessity to go to tens of hundreds of services thrice. The primary two visits are for many residents and employees to get the 2 doses of the vaccine, with the third go to as a backup for individuals who missed the primary clinic. Covid-19 Vaccines › Solutions to Your Vaccine Questions If I reside within the U.S., when can I get the vaccine? Whereas the precise order of vaccine recipients might fluctuate by state, most will seemingly put medical staff and residents of long-term care services first. If you wish to perceive how this choice is getting made, this text will assist. When can I return to regular life after being vaccinated? Life will return to regular solely when society as a complete beneficial properties sufficient safety in opposition to the coronavirus. As soon as international locations authorize a vaccine, they’ll solely be capable to vaccinate a number of p.c of their residents at most within the first couple months. The unvaccinated majority will nonetheless stay susceptible to getting contaminated. A rising variety of coronavirus vaccines are displaying strong safety in opposition to turning into sick. But it surely’s additionally doable for individuals to unfold the virus with out even understanding they’re contaminated as a result of they expertise solely delicate signs or none in any respect. Scientists don’t but know if the vaccines additionally block the transmission of the coronavirus. So in the interim, even vaccinated individuals might want to put on masks, keep away from indoor crowds, and so forth. As soon as sufficient individuals get vaccinated, it is going to grow to be very tough for the coronavirus to seek out susceptible individuals to contaminate. Relying on how rapidly we as a society obtain that purpose, life would possibly begin approaching one thing like regular by the autumn 2021. If I’ve been vaccinated, do I nonetheless have to put on a masks? Sure, however not ceaselessly. The 2 vaccines that can probably get licensed this month clearly shield individuals from getting sick with Covid-19. However the medical trials that delivered these outcomes weren’t designed to find out whether or not vaccinated individuals may nonetheless unfold the coronavirus with out growing signs. That continues to be a risk. We all know that people who find themselves naturally contaminated by the coronavirus can unfold it whereas they’re not experiencing any cough or different signs. Researchers might be intensely finding out this query because the vaccines roll out. Within the meantime, even vaccinated individuals might want to consider themselves as doable spreaders. Will it harm? What are the negative effects? The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is delivered as a shot within the arm, like different typical vaccines. The injection gained’t be any completely different from ones you’ve gotten earlier than. Tens of hundreds of individuals have already obtained the vaccines, and none of them have reported any severe well being issues. However a few of them have felt short-lived discomfort, together with aches and flu-like signs that sometimes final a day. It’s doable that folks might have to plan to take a time without work work or college after the second shot. Whereas these experiences aren’t nice, they’re signal: they’re the results of your personal immune system encountering the vaccine and mounting a potent response that can present long-lasting immunity. Will mRNA vaccines change my genes? No. The vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer use a genetic molecule to prime the immune system. That molecule, often called mRNA, is finally destroyed by the physique. The mRNA is packaged in an oily bubble that may fuse to a cell, permitting the molecule to slide in. The cell makes use of the mRNA to make proteins from the coronavirus, which may stimulate the immune system. At any second, every of our cells might include a whole lot of hundreds of mRNA molecules, which they produce to be able to make proteins of their very own. As soon as these proteins are made, our cells then shred the mRNA with particular enzymes. The mRNA molecules our cells make can solely survive a matter of minutes. The mRNA in vaccines is engineered to resist the cell’s enzymes a bit longer, in order that the cells could make further virus proteins and immediate a stronger immune response. However the mRNA can solely final for a number of days at most earlier than they’re destroyed. The concept that all nursing dwelling residents may get their first doses by Christmas was not a sensible prospect even when Mr. Azar, the well being secretary, floated it 12 days earlier than the vacation. By that time, some states had informed the Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention that they’d not activate the federal program to vaccinate their nursing properties till Dec. 28. The logistics would have been difficult even when states had put a precedence on getting their first doses to nursing properties. Michael Pratt, a spokesman for the Well being and Human Companies Division, stated Mr. Azar had been talking solely aspirationally about what states have been able to doing, since they’d sufficient vaccine doses to cowl all nursing dwelling residents by Christmas. However that might have required that states place much less of a precedence on vaccinating high-risk teams like heath care staff. T.J. Crawford, a spokesman for CVS, stated the chain was making first visits to all services inside 4 weeks of every state’s activating its vaccination program for nursing properties or assisted residing services. “This isn’t a drive-through or stadium vaccination effort,” Mr. Crawford stated. “We’re visiting greater than 40,000 services with a median of lower than 100 residents, in some circumstances going room to room.” He stated CVS was “on monitor and delivering on objectives established and communicated early within the course of.” However a rising variety of governors and state well being officers have voiced frustration with CVS’s and Walgreens’ pace. In Mississippi, some long-term services gained’t get their first go to till Feb. 11, the state well being officer, Dr. Thomas Dobbs, stated this month. “We’re clearly upset with the progress within the long-term care program,” he stated. Some states and cities are exploring methods to hasten the inoculations. Seattle is utilizing its Fireplace Division to vaccinate practically 1,000 residents and employees at grownup household properties, a kind of long-term care, by the top of January. Florida employed an emergency companies firm, CDR Maguire, to offer out doses at 1,900 assisted residing services that had not been scheduled for visits by CVS and Walgreens groups earlier than Jan. 24. In Michigan, officers have requested the federal authorities to allow them to work with different pharmacies, such because the grocery store chains Meijer and Kroger, to hurry up the vaccination effort in long-term care services, stated Bobby Leddy, a spokesman for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. West Virginia is the one state that’s not utilizing CVS and Walgreens. Relying totally on native impartial pharmacies, the state stated on Dec. 30 that it had wrapped up the primary spherical at its 214 long-term care services. Among the initially feared issues that would decelerate the vaccine rollout in nursing properties haven’t emerged as severe obstacles, at the least to this point, in response to facility operators and trade researchers. Regardless of widespread worries that the vaccines’ negative effects — which may embrace fevers, chills and fatigue — would trigger employees to overlook work and residents to wish extra care, that has not occurred to any important diploma. And whereas there was early confusion about how nursing properties ought to get consent from residents or their households, that course of has largely gone easily. However different issues are slowing the marketing campaign. A major variety of long-term care staff have balked at receiving the vaccine. The virus’s unfold can be delaying the method. Folks shouldn’t be vaccinated whereas they nonetheless have Covid-19 signs or are isolating, in response to the C.D.C. Outbreaks and circumstances of Covid-19 in some long-term care communities have led Walgreens to delay scheduling preliminary visits or to reschedule them, stated Rick Gates, an government main the corporate’s long-term care vaccinations. CVS has encountered the identical problem, although it has not been widespread. The corporate has left the choice about whether or not to proceed with visits in such circumstances to native clinic group leaders and officers on the services, Mr. Crawford stated. One other issue is that some states didn’t rapidly activate their packages to vaccinate individuals at assisted residing services and comparable communities. In some circumstances, they waited till weeks after they started vaccinations at nursing properties. However many long-term care services embrace each nursing properties and assisted residing. In these circumstances, pharmacy groups have been in a position to vaccinate solely a subset of residents. In Prairie du Chien, Wis., for instance, a group from Walgreens on Thursday made its first go to to the native nursing dwelling, Prairie Maison, to inject practically all of its roughly 50 residents with the Moderna vaccine. However Prairie Maison is a component of a bigger senior group, which incorporates about 50 assisted residing residents. As a result of Wisconsin did not activate its vaccination program for assisted residing till Friday, these residents weren’t provided the vaccine — although they’re in the identical constructing because the nursing dwelling residents. “Vaccinating one group and never the opposite doesn’t make a variety of sense,” stated Dr. Mark Grunwald, the chairman of Prairie Maison’s board. Abby Goodnough contributed reporting. Supply hyperlink #Boil #care #facilities #Frustrations #longterm #pace #vaccinations

ASTONISHING X-MEN #9 REVIEW
Writer: Charles Soule Artists: Matteo Buffagni and Giada Marchisio Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles Cover Artists: Leinil Francis Yu & Morry Hollowell NCBD: 03/14/18 Publisher: @marvelentertainment Review by: Rob Carey With Psylocke and X trapped in a reality storm, Logan recalls that Proteus' weakness is metal. Archangel uses his metal wings to envelope Betsy to shield her from Proteus, while Logan stabs X in the chest with his adamantium claws. As the team regroups, Mystique expresses that X is a stranger they do not know, Bishop reveals that he saw an omen to the end of the world when Proteus arrived, and Psylocke gets a psychic tip for the team to head north. Elsewhere, Proteus has taken control of Fetters Hill, Scotland, using its citizens in an experiment by which Proteus gives each person full control over reality, which quickly descends into chaos as a villager kills another over a romantic jealousy.
With this issue, Astonishing X-Men reaches the midpoint of "A Man Called X," the main point of which is Proteus' plan to wreak havoc with his extraordinary power set. While his motive has not yet been established, one can assume he is intent on seeking revenge on the humanity that rejected him as a child. And his method -- to punish mankind by giving it control over everything it wants -- is a clever commentary both on human nature and retribution. In addition, there are a handful of terrific moments in this issue: Archangel's tenderness with Psylocke, Logan's "oops," and Mystique's spot-on analysis of X and Proteus. There remain a few plot points that require resolution (Bishop's prophecy, X's real identity, etc.), and with the team en route to Scotland, the remaining issues to this maxi-series should be action-packed.
The artwork in this issue was generally very good too, with a few exemplary panels found throughout. Some of the more impressive moments involve Proteus' reality storm -- bathed in a beautiful Psylocke-purple -- and the Scottish village landscapes. In fact, Psylocke looked spectacular in all of her appearances. Additionally, a special shout-out is due to Yu and Hollowell for the cover's warped perspective, Proteus-tinged hands and arms, and illogical perspective. For the story contained behind the cover, it was spot on. Ultimately, this issue was the rising action of the arc, and there weren't a lot of moments to blow readers away. But as the series nears its end, Astonishing X-Men needs to move toward big payoffs for the team. I'm confident Soule will deliver.
