Welp here is another one. This will be OT7(focus on Namjoon coz he is my bias, but bonds will be formed with others too) with A/B/O dynamics, Vikings influences, with badass but slightly low-esteem oc, stray kids as her platonic family, battle, blood, revenge, game of thrones-esque plot, death and lots of sex.
It will be multi chaptered.
Please share your thoughts and let me know what you think.
P.S. The title means 'to find' in old norse.
SUMMARY- You never really thought that your destiny would take you so far away from home.
CHAPTER 1|CHAPTER-2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It rains the day you lay eyes on your intended.
In the blood-stained field in front of the castle that you call your home stands him, Kim Namjoon, the biggest warlord the world had ever witnessed. His army consisted of thousands even millions, those savages, as the south would like to call them, were more powerful and disciplined than any army you had ever seen. Their troops were roguish in looks, yes, but their skill in battle was no joke.
Kim Namjoon’s skill in battle was no joke. He fought bare-chested with an axe and a sword; you had heard that he could cut down men with a single sweep of his sword. He was a true demon in battle, as most raiders were, but his skills put the best warriors in your homeland’s army to shame. His great heathen army slaughtered your king’s army by thousands every day, other than leaving hundreds of men injured.
You would know as the chief healer, stitching wounds, cauterizing them, applying salve to burns, cuts were fine. Holding the hands of dying soldiers as they hallucinated their mothers, lovers, wives and sisters was not, not even for someone like you who was used to blood, battle and death.
But you pushed on, for the king, for the country, for the people, you worked day and night you pushed on.
These days the workload had been increased as the king had no taken to treat the prisoners of war as well. The injured and the dying of the heathen army were brought to the camps to get medical assistance if possible and the injured ones were returned to their camps and the dead were returned to the opposing army with respect.
You were not thankful for the workload but what could you do, the king commands and the rest follow.
You were not thankful for the workload but you applauded your king’s nobility nonetheless. Your brother, Christopher Bang was nothing if not noble and kind and humble. Maybe that was why his army were ready to die and kill for him. Maybe it was because he thought of all as equal, be it the duke or the beggar’s son, Alpha, Omega or Beta everyone was equal in the eyes of your Alpha brother.
Maybe that was why you, an Omega, were working in an army camp filled with betas and alphas at all times of the night and day. Maybe that’s why you as an omega, could kill and maim as well as any alpha.
He was strong, your brother, but too kind, too truthful and too righteous for the world that he was in, younger than you but still on the throne for the gods gave him a cock and the second gender of an alpha and you a cunt and the curse of being an omega.
You weren’t brother and sister by blood, you were the orphan the previous king found on a hunting trip, half feral, in the jungle, at the age of seven. You were brought to the castle, Christopher took one look at your small, slight frame, for he was a giant to you even at the age of five, and decided that you would be his noona. You took his hand and resolved to protect him forever. Nothing much was needed after that.
He deserved better though, you thought. Better than this wretched war and that godforsaken alpha Kim Namjoon who is intent on busting down the doors of your home.
Your name being called out draws you out of your mental reverie.
“Princess, the king calls for you at the front.” Ser Seo Changbin of your brother’s personal guard says.
You finish stitching the heathen soldier’s wound and apply salve and bandage before patting him roughly on the shoulder and getting up.
“What is it?”
“The king calls for you. He did not tell me the reason, your grace.”
You gesture ser Changbin to head the way as you follow him to the wall where your royal brother awaits you. He turns towards you as you come near.
“Leave us.” He commands.
“Is everything alright, my king?”
“Call me Chris, sister, how many do I have to repeat that?” he says.
“When we are alone, my king.”
He sighs, but motions to the battlefield, a far away look in his eyes as he looks down upon the ruin the battle has caused on the once green fields.
“We are not going to be able to defend ourselves for much longer if this goes on, sister, Kim Namjoon gets closer to defeating us every day. We cannot keep going for much longer.” He says. He sounds tired, too tired for someone his age.
“Why don’t you sit on the war council with me sister, we could use your skills?”
“You know why, you might not mind your omega sister, one of common blood at that running around with a sword in her hand, but others do. Alphas do, I would rather die than let anyone of them insult you again after what happened. You know better.” You spoke.
He sighed heavily.
You look at your younger brother, he looks as though the weight of the world sits on his shoulders. It does in some way, you think, this kingdom, as large as it is, it is your world.
His world.
He fights for it today, for its very existence.
Of course, the weight of this responsibility weighs him down. He is fighting, not only for his kingdom, but his world, his home.
“Is it time that we seek a truce with them?” You ask.
“We have no leverage; he knows he can defeat us. He needn’t sue for peace to ask for anything, he can take it, all of it.”
The sun has gone down, you see the enemy camp at a distance, its torches shine bright.
“Then we can only hope to reach stalemate, Chan-ah” You call him by the name your mother called him when she was alive and try to calm him down with your scent.
“I hope so”
He suddenly seizes you by the shoulders and says, “Stay near the battle field tomorrow, sister, I feel that tomorrow might be the day- “he stops, his hands trembling slightly.
“I need you by my side noona, I need you there, the troops need their lioness. I need you, We need you. It could be tomorrow that that godforsaken man would break down the doors of the castle. I don’t care about what happened five years ago on that wretched battlefield. I care about now, about today.”
You looked in the distance. Towards the enemy camp and remembered the amount of injured and dead on your hands, the heavy losses and the weeping mothers, fathers, daughters, sons and wives. You had to be there, if not for your sake then for the sake of your country.
“I will be there Chan-ah. Noona will watch over you. Ask my personal 300 to report.”
He takes you in his arms after that, keeping you in his embrace and you let your forehead rest on his broad chest. He holds you tight enough and breaths your scent in, as if you are the only thing keeping him grounded.
Nothing is said after that, as both of you silently carry the fear of tomorrow in your hearts.
…………………………….
The next day clouds gather in the sky as you don your armour.
You hadn’t stepped in the battle field not since the last war, not after what happened five years ago.
Blood.
All that you could see was blood, it stained everything in sight.
Your hand, your face, your armour, the field around you.
There was a strange ringing in your ears, you moved forward regardless, your axe cutting down everyone and everything that stood in front of you.
A voice called.
You knew that voice.
It was coming nearer.
The person was in front of you.
You swung the axe, but people were suddenly holding you back, you could not move.
The voice was closer, louder, shouting.
“Noona”
You gasped as if you had just broken the surface of the water in the lake and looked around.
You saw worried and slightly horrified looks. You saw your brother looking at you, scared and unsure.
In your daze, in your state of berserk, you had tried to kill your brother.
You hadn’t stepped in war since. You were afraid to lose control, afraid that you would kill your own men in that state.
Being a berserker was not easy, the warrior lost themselves in that state, all that mattered was killing, not injury, not pain, not fatigue, just death. You had been stabbed in the arm and calf that day but you had not stopped your killing spree regardless. The title of lioness bestowed upon you that day and your fame as a berserker had spread far and wide.
Stories were told about the omega berserker who had lost herself and battle and killed half a million people in a single day, who had won the war in a single day. No one had dared to attack your homeland after that, until now.
So, for the sake of the king, your brother, and your people you don the armour you had abandoned.
You sighed and headed to your horse, and followed your brother to the battlefield.

Paying It Forward
Good Evening all,
Ok, I know I haven’t posted the next chapter of Edinburgh to Boston. I am sorry about that. But it has been a pretty bad, horrible, no good end of the year for me. Hubby got sick again and I had to rush him to hospital. He needed heavy duty antibiotics. He is now ok, but still very debilitated after his illness. Me? I have been taking care of him, going to work, and my characters have decided not to play nice with me. Hubs said I painted myself into a corner. Not exactly, I just haven’t figured out how to get them to do what I want them to do. And I am tired. Which is partially how this fic came about.
I decided that I would start to read MOBY for two reasons. One, it has been some time since I read it and I am hoping that Bees will be out this year and I wanted to refresh my memory of what happened previously. Two, I was hoping it would help my writer’s block. It did but in an unexpected way. After getting to a certain point in the story, I went to sleep and dreamt the story you are about to read. It played in my head over and over, like it had to some out. So I wrote it and here it is.
Now that I said MOBY: SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t read MOBY and don’t want to find out what’s going to happen, PLEASE DON’T READ THIS. The story actually draws on ABOSAA, ECHO, MOBY, and a tiny bit from the TV program.
As always I am indebted to @scubalass for her most excellent work as my beta. Also she contributed to the story which made it so much better. I’ll tell you at the end. I am also grateful to @gotham-ruaidh who told me it was different and good. And that I should go with it. The other important thing you need to know is it is written like one of Claire’s voice-over monologues. I know that people hate the monologues, but that’s how it was and I kept to it.
So I give you Paying It Forward. I hope you like it.
The detritus of the woodland floor muffled the sounds of the Army advancing. Moldy leaves crackled and fragrant pine needles from fir trees helped to disguise their steps. But, it is not in the make-up of the military to travel quietly especially in the 18th century. Horses neighed and harness jingled. Goats bleated. Shot pouches and cartridge-boxes buckled to belts rattled and clinked Wagons creaked under their heavy loads. Carriages groaned pulling the weighty cannon along. And, of course, there was Rollo, half-wolf, half-dog. The mongrel barked madly harassing man and beast alike as he weaved among them. The voice of my nephew, Ian Murray, called to the animal, “ Thig an seo cù .” Yipping with glee at the sound of his master’s voice, he raced to Ian’s side. The sounds of infantry on the move certainly broke the peace of the coppice.
Our journey became hampered by the dense forest we traveled through. It was thick with trees, bushes, and bramble impeding the progress of the Continental Army as they marched toward Monmouth. Once there we were to muster with General George Washington and the other battalions.
Commanding this regiment is the newly ordained General James Fraser, my husband to whom I serve as company surgeon. I do admit it was quite a shock to first see him dressed in the full military regalia of a Continental Officer. I began to tremble becoming a quivering mess when I first took him in wearing an officer’s dark blue and buff.
“Why does it always have to be you? Haven’t you, haven’t we given enough? Isn't it time for you to put down your sword and pistol?” I shuddered as I recalled the failed attempt by Charles Stewart to regain the Scottish crown which resulted in our twenty-year separation. The skirmish at Alamance that resulted in Murtagh’s death and the hanging of our son-in-law Roger which almost cost his life. The battle of Saratoga where I amputated one of Jamie’s fingers. Now, we were being pulled into another conflict. Was it too much to want to return to our simple life on the Ridge I wondered? But Jamie, my Jamie, is a highlander born and bred. A decent man, with strong principles and morals. He is a man of honor and that is not a small thing to be. I watched him as he sat at the head of the column, sitting straight and tall in his saddle like the true highland warrior he is. The breadth of his powerful back and shoulders would leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that he was born to lead, to command, to this moment in history. And command he would, braving the responsibility of leading his battalion to fight against the oppression of the British king.
Jamie knew the meaning of suffering, cruelty, and loss at the hands of the English. The loss of his home, his country, his own personal freedom came at their hands. And the loss of his family. He had quite the history with the Redcoats. Arrested for obstruction, escaping, then being recaptured. He ran afoul of a sadistic dragoon captain who had him flogged most cruelly one hundred lashes upon one hundred lashes. He escaped again and lived as an outlaw on the run instead of facing the gallows for a murder he did not commit.
Then there was Culloden. Where he, or should I say we lost everything. I was pregnant with our second child; our first child, a daughter, was stillborn. On the eve of battle, Jamie forced me to return to my own time for the safety of myself and our child. Jamie believed it would be his destiny to die in battle. Instead, he lived. Again he went into hiding for seven years living in a cave in Lallybroch. The Redcoats continued to harass his family, stealing what they wanted from the estate. They arrested Ian, Jamie’s brother-in-law as the Redcoats believed he knew of Jamie’s whereabouts. And there was the Highland Clearances which destroyed homes, Scottish culture, language, and their way of life.
Jamie was not driven to this war because of a need for revenge because of his losses, but rather he felt he was honor-bound as a father to take up his sword to protect those he loved. Even if those he loved lived centuries after him.
“Ye said that this was meant tae be Brianna’s home, her country, aye? Then I must do what I can for our daughter and her bairns. ‘Tis my duty as sire and grandsire to see that they will live free, Sassenach.”
And he would do what he must for Brianna, Jem, wee Mandy, and Roger. No matter the cost to himself.
My mind completely focused on Jamie and our immediate future prevented me from noticing a tall man thin as a rail standing in the middle of the road blocking our progress. Immediately, Jamie’s second in command rode up next to his commander.
The man did not budge an inch. He was rather rough looking. Wearing a knitted cap on his head, his long greasy hair protruded out. A grizzled beard covered his face. His clothes were quite worn having been patched many times. He wore no shoes. In all, he looked quite primitive.
Suddenly, he moved with a decided determination; a man on a mission. The man strode up to Jamie assuming correctly that he was the man in charge.
A strong downward breeze announced his presence. Most likely the man had not bathed in months if not years. The odor was enough to make your eyes water.
The old man came forward eyeing Jamie like an entomologist studying a new species of bug. Relaxing he gave a tug on his cap and briefly bobbed his head.
“Ye in charge here?” the old coot demanded.
‘Aye, I am. General James Fraser at yer service sir. Might I enquire to whom I am speaking?”
“Mortimer Hepplewhite the owner of this here land yer trespassing on. And I want tae know when ye will be gone.”
“Mr. Hepplewhite, we shall be off yer land as soon as may be. We need to travel off the main road for now as there have been sightings of English troops nearby.”
“Well, all yer clanging and stomping about is disturbing the peace of me home.”
Jamie turned around to look at the property. It had not been cleared for planting nor were there any animals grazing. All that stood in the distance was a ramshackle cabin with a lopsided chimney discharging an inordinate amount of smoke.
“I dinna see any crops, or animals grazing, or people that we might be disturbing, sir.”
“Not disturbing he says! Why I’ll have ye know me Arabella is in a right fit. She doesn’t care much for strangers.”
The recluse, a long-limb man, raised a heretofore unnoticed ball of fur and thrust it under Jamie’s nose. He focused on it intently causing his eyes to almost cross. It hissed, spit, and yowled with great ferocity.
It seemed that Arabella was a cantankerous cat. And was as ill-kempt as its master with matted fur and bald in spots. One fang hung outside its mouth and on closer inspection seemed to be missing an eye.
Mortimer drew the beast close to his chest whispering sweet words of comfort while tenderly stroking its scraggly fur. The cat settled in his arms and even began to purr.
Jamie called to his Lieutenant and leaned over to whisper in his ear. He nodded and rode off to follow his orders.
I sat on my horse watching this spectacle play out. Without warning, I felt the sudden loss of my cat and worried about his well-being. Adso was part house cat and part feral cat. However, he was my cat. He loved to jump onto my lap to snuggle and drift off to sleep. Or lie on the windowsill basking in a sunbeam tail swishing like a metronome. He did wreak havoc in my surgery at times but he was mine, a gift from Jamie. Adso was just as much a part of the family as any of us. So why couldn’t Arabella be this lonely man’s family? Family is whoever you say they are.
The Lieutenant promptly returned carrying a bundle which he handed to Jamie.
Jamie slid down from his horse and approached the gentleman.
“On behalf of the Continental Army, I would like tae offer ye recompense for disturbing yer peace. Please accept this small token from myself and General Washington. And for the lovely Miss Arabella, I make a gift of this fish just caught this morning.”
Jamie removed his hat and bowed to the man.
Mortimer truly wasn’t sure of what to make of this but graciously accepted the parcel. He removed his cap revealing a head of matted hair and returned the bow. He replaced his cap, straightened his shoulders, held his head high as he strolled back to his home, a rich man. A man made richer not for what he received but for the respect given him.
Later that night as I lay in Jamie’s embrace I asked him what prompted his actions on the road.
“Do ye ken the conversation we had in the gardens in Philadelphia? The one about what happened between ye and his lordship?”
Did I remember, he wanted to know? How could I forget?
“Of course I remember, you said that you would mention it from time to time. Am I to take it that this will be one of those times?”
“Aye, ‘tis. But not what yer thinking about,” he said with a sidelong look. “I’m speaking of how John’s friendship healed us during times of great need. Mine at Ardsmuir, Hellwater, and Jamaica. Yer’s when ye thought I died.” The topic of my hasty marriage to John (for strictly political reasons) was still a sore point to him. He understood it, but didn’t and wouldn’t like it.
Jamie let out a sigh trying to collect himself before continuing, “Mortimer was naught but a poor lonely old man, Sassenach. And I did not do much for him. I gave him a wee bit of flour, lard, dried meat, apples, and some parritch.” Jamie stopped to think for a moment, “Oh, a razor, a lump of soap, and a fish for his mangy cat.”
“Are you saying that you did this because of the kindnesses John showed us?”
“Exactly so, mo ghràdh . I felt..it just felt like the right thing tae do.”
I raised my face to look at him, “There’s a term for that and it's called paying it forward .”
He looked quizzically at me trying to understand what I meant.
“What that means is when someone does something kind or helpful for you, you return that kindness to a different person instead of repaying the person who originally helped you. Did you know that the man who started this idea is alive now?”
“Och, aye? Who is he Sassenach?”
“Benjamin Franklin. I think you would like him. He was a founding Father, freemason, inventor, scientist, and a printer.”
His eyebrows lifted at the mention of Franklin being a printer and a freemason. “I should like to meet this man one day. “
Jamie grew quiet as he attempted to digest this information. “Paying it forward,” he rolled the words around in his mouth tasting them. “Aye, that’s it. Just so, I was paying it forward.”
“Jamie, I think what you did was far greater than repaying a kindness. I think you gave him something more than he ever expected. You gave him respect and a way to restore his dignity.”
He leaned over and kissed me, “Aye, Sassenach, respect is something every man or woman deserves.” Jamie stopped to think for a moment, “No man wants to go about stinking if he can help it.” I knew he was thinking of his time hiding in the cave and as a prisoner at Ardsmuir. “There were days I thought I would never get the stink off my body, dirt from under my nails, or be rid of the lice. ‘Twas a small thing but it may make a big difference to him. Maybe it will help to restore his self-regard.”
The following day we resumed our journey. Once again a man stood in the road again blocking our path. There was something vaguely familiar about him. It was Mortimer, now clean-shaven, clothes washed having removed several layers of filth, and much less fragrant. He carried a pack strapped to his back probably containing all his worldly possessions. Strangely he carried a beautiful and well-maintained musket in his hand.
He approached Jamie, removed his cap, and bowed deeply.
“Yer Excellency, I have decided tae travel with ye fer a while. If ye dinna mind.”
“Yer presence is welcome, Mr. Hepplewhite. Find yerself a place among the men. This evening please come by tae see my wife. She is the physician of our troop. She will see tae yer physicking needs should ye have any.”
“I thank ye, sir.” Mortimer replaced his cap, lowered his head, and took a position among the rank-and-file.
Jamie smiled, a pleased look playing across his face. His arm raised and he waved us forward.
As the men resumed their march, a wee black puff ball of fur stuck its head out of Mortimer’s bag evidently Arabella had a wash-up too.
********************
Thig an seo cù - Come here dog.
If anyone wants to know, Jamie’s white stallion’s name was Samson. And he sneezed violently when he sniffed Mortimer.
A little bit of history here. Benjamin Franklin lent Benjamin Webb a sum of money to start a business. He told Webb that when his business was successful and he had paid all his debts, he should likewise help someone else like Franklin helped him. In return, that gentleman would have to assist someone else like Webb helped him. Franklin hoped this would continue until some knave would stop its progress. The idea of paying it forward was born.
We can all thank @scubalass for telling me about Ben Franklin and Paying It Forward. She is truly an amazing person and a fount of information and wisdom. I think that this added so much to the story and found it quite interesting.
Thank you for reading. I hope you liked it.

10 Writing Questions Tag
Tagged by @stackofnotebooks
1. How many writing projects are you working on at the moment?
If I actually counted all of the currently shelved WIPs, I would probably cry, so let's see what I'm actively working on:
Letter of Marque is in beta reading and second round edits. Starting to draft queries and a synopsis.
Handbook for Heartless Killers is being queried.
I may be revamping Theory of Souls, because I had the idea to put Raen with a werewolf and it's actually kind of interesting? We'll see. I'm still brainstorming that one. Brainstorming an actual plot for Glitches aside from 'chronomage tries to stop fucking jumping through time before he has a stroke.' Thinking about doing some research for a sequel to Letter of Marque because my wife wants it and it was actually fun. Still knocking around the idea of lesbian samurais, because why not? Debating on getting back into Lion of Persia, but it's just not calling to me right now.
TL;DR: A lot.
2. What is your proudest accomplishment as a writer so far and why?
On an actual writing level, probably starting freelance work and getting paid to write, finally, even if it's non-fiction and SEO work. On a personal level, connecting with other writers and helping them navigate what is new territory for a lot of them.
3. What is the central message or theme of your current writing project?
Which current one? Since Letter of Marque is probably my most current active one, I'll answer for that. It's at its core about finding the right person that helps you find yourself.
4. What genre do you find it easiest to write in?
I'll let you know when I figure that out. Depends on the day.
5. Are there any fonts that you forbid yourself from writing in?
I pretty much only write in Times New Roman. Everything else looks wrong.
6. If you were to meet one of your OCs in real life, who would it be and why?
Lord, which one would be the least likely to kill me? Probably Kamin, because not only is just a genuinely good person, but he's funny and has a lot of great stories. And I want to hear him sing.
Ethan is a close second, purely for stories, but I wouldn't know which were real and which weren't.
7. What is the story or meaning behind one of your OC’s names?
Hmm, most of them don't really have stories behind them other than 'I liked how it sounded' or 'I looked through baby names until one jumped out.' Eztli was originally made as an angel in Chael's garrison for an RP with my wife, so I needed a good Aztec warrior name. She definitely grew into it.
8. Has a particular piece of media (book, TV show, film, etc.) ever majorly inspired a writing project?
Wolf at the Gates/Dragon on the Mountain were written while listening to Avenge Sevenfold's Hail to the King on repeat, but the originally story behind it (which I wrote in high school!) was heavily inspired after seeing a Medieval Times show. The story changed significantly since then.
9. Is there a place where you absolutely cannot write?
Some days everywhere. Really, I can write pretty much anywhere, unless I'm surrounded by people that I know and like, and would rather be spending time with.
10. What clichés or bad habits do you fall into in your writing?
I tend to get myself into em-dash and semicolon hell sometimes, and tend to have sentences that are too long. I spend a lot of editing chopping up sentences, or eliminating them entirely. I'm usually pretty dialogue-heavy in my writing, and tend to have my characters do too many gestures to break it up. How often does he really need to sigh, or lean, or cross his arms? But that's why there are many drafts.
I will tag with the same questions @scripturient-manipulator, @seeingteacupsindragons and @brynwrites

7 Lessons From 100+ Failed Startupshttps://thinkgrowth.org/7-lessons-from-100-failed-startups-2db31984867aThere’s a joke about startups. “For every 10 startups you see in the market, 11 of them will fail.” I didn’t want to think that my startup would be the one to fail, and no entrepreneur does. I thought I knew it all…or at least would learn it all during the process of launching my startup. Jason Huertas, author of My Startup Failed, says this is common, writing:“You think that you know it all. After all, you’re already successful in your mind, so who cares what others have to say? Fight that urge every day…You know nothing.”After my own failure, I became obsessed with understanding how and why things go wrong. As of today, I’ve read 100+ failed startups stories. I recently compiled my learnings from this into The Startup Checklist, and this post shares a few things in particular that stood out to me.# 1. There is no market for your productIn the majority of failures, there is one basic reason: Lack of market. “I’ll assert that market is the most important factor in a startup’s success or failure,” said Marc Andreessen. Our research proves he is right. The one main reason for failure with both B2B (44%) and B2C (50%) startups was a lack of market. Even the best team with the best product can fail if the market is nonexistent. Why does this happen? Why do founders get this wrong again and again? John O’Nolan shared some insight in his Travelllll Post-Mortem:“We didn’t know what traction was, and by that measure, we didn’t know that we didn’t have any. Our first media pack boasted our “10,000 page views in just 48 hours of launch” and our monthly traffic was 3–4x that of any travel blog we knew about. We knew we were a big fish… we just didn’t know how small the pond was.”If you’re going to spend your time making a product, make sure there is a big market for what you’re building.# 2. Get ready to fail in three yearsWhen a startup fails it seems to happen overnight. In reality, that’s almost never the case. Most of the time, there was a visible, steady decline in one or several points. And these points go unnoticed and unfixed until it’s too late to save the company.Have you ever asked yourself about the amount of time you are ready to spend building your startup before it becomes profitable or fails? Not how much money, but how much time? I will tell you. My research shows that it took an average of almost four years for a B2B startup to fail. And an average of almost three years for a B2C startup to fail. How do you feel about that timeline?# 3. Confront brutal factsThe majority of failed startups worked hard on the proof of technical part of the process, but skipped the business model and idea validation steps.Get out of the building! When you just start your business, you know very little about how it will operate. Focus on validation! Idea and business model validation is a full-time job.One of the biggest issues we found in our study was the lack of idea validation. This affected 17% of B2C startups. In most cases, your ideas are the opposite of market needs. That’s why, from the outset, you need to be your own worst critic. Confirm your idea from as many angles as possible. Don’t start to brainstorm on the value prop of your product until you’re sure that you’re building something that people not only want but actually need. Don’t fall in love with the solution. Fall in love with the problem. In Adrian Tan’s post-mortem on his startup’s failure, he writes:“Validate your business model early (!): And I mean seriously early. Before building a product and before writing that first line of code. At all times during your journey, you should have a clear answer of, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and ‘Who am I building this for?’ As mentioned above, while learning from your possible customers, ask them, ‘Would you pay for a solution like this? How much?’”You have proved nothing until you have your first 10 paying customers.# 4. Your potential customers lieWhile in the customer development stage at Clever.do we got positive feedback from our potential users. Numbers showed that there was strong interest in our idea and our product. What idiots we were to think this was enough, and that the responses were true.If we had conducted a deeper investigation we would have changed our decision on the launch of our startup. Just because people say it’s a good idea doesn’t mean it is. The reality showed that even if a potential customer has this or that problem, and wants to get the solution, he or she will rarely actually take a step to overcome this problem. If the problem isn’t pressing enough to cause palpable pain, people will live with it, and avoid the pain of spending money to fix it.Ask your potential customers what they are doing to minimize their problem. If they are doing nothing, it’s not a problem waiting for a solution.Marcus Holmes, in his post-mortem analysis of Gigger, writes:“The main lesson here is that you can’t just listen to what your customers tell you when it seems to be what you want to hear. You have to get their active demonstration that they will invest whatever is required to use your product, whether that’s time, money, or both. Get them to run a ninja warrior course if you have to, but don’t call signups on a landing page or friendly phone conversations ‘validation.’”Yes, your potential customers will tell you they like your product. In reality, even email opt-ins, beta signup totals, and targeted surveys don’t work. There is a very big difference between people entering their email address on your landing page and people paying each month for your product. You should test customer behavior, not customer opinion. Some time after we launched, we found things to be very different than our pre-launch research had suggested:Most of the people in the beta list didn’t even use the product. Those who used the product didn’t stay with it for more than a few days. They didn’t use it every day, which was a crucial component of the product.None paid for it.#5. Poor marketing will kill youEven when you have your idea validated and the product is ready, it is tough to drive customer acquisition growth. The reality is brutal. Reason #2 for B2C startup failure is poor marketing. It affected 29% of the companies in our research (compared to only 7% of B2Bs).Marketing is something you do in order to increase your sales and make more money. It doesn’t matter how perfect your product is. Even a great product will NOT market itself. In 10 lessons from a failed startup, Mark Goldenson writes:“Marketing requires constant expertise. The main failure of PlayCafe was marketing. Dev and I came from PayPal, a strongly viral product at a company almost hostile to marketing. Our efforts in SEO, SEM, virality, platforms, PR, and partnerships weren’t terrible, but drawing users to a live event requires constant skillful work. Like creating content, I no longer think marketing is something smart novices can figure out part-time. As the web gets super-saturated, marketing is the difference-maker, and it’s too deep a skill to leave to amateurs.”If you want to survive, you need to spend a lot of time researching distribution channels. You need to identify those that will reach your target audience the best way. You need to hire people who are experienced with the unique realities of startup marketing. The most important thing is getting your product into the hands of customers. You should spend an equal amount of time on MVP development and distribution.# 6. Running out of money is Game OverYou need to get your first customer, money to start a company, money you need to become profitable, money in case of hard times for your startup. You need to have a financial plan. You should set clear deadlines and budgets. You shouldn’t overspend, like we did it with Clever.do. Even when we saw that our MVP wasn’t working, we spent more money on more things. It seems obvious in retrospect, but at the time, it felt like the right thing to do.Plan how to spend your money wisely. Don’t spend too much on the product building. At least until you are sure that you are building the product people need. In any other scenario, you will waste money on a product that nobody wants to buy.Be brutally frugal in the early days. Forget business cards, office infrastructure, employee perks, and all the shit about registering a company. You can avoid 80% of expenses by working from home and hiring employees who will work remotely. Don’t hire until you have a product. You should not spend on the things that only distract you from the main goal. Until you have sales. Conserve money for when you really need it.20% of B2B startups, and 15% of B2C startups, ran out of cash. How much money can your company make in a best/worst case scenario? You should answer this question regardless to investors because you need to know if your company is a fundable startup or a lifestyle business. — Gil Sadis, The Mistakes that Killed My Startup.# 7. Don’t wait too long with final decisionsLaunching a startup is about creating a vision, turning an idea into reality, and pursuing a dream. Do you know any entrepreneur who wants to shut down his dream? I don’t.Every founder knows how much time, effort, and money it took him to launch, develop, and grow. Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, it takes three years to fail. You as an entrepreneur are walking through a valley of death all the time along the journey, and you need to always be considering when it’s time to exit that valley, ideally before it transforms into your personal and financial nightmare. The faster you make this decision, the less pain you’ll have in the future.Pawel Brodzinksi writes:I think that one is a bit sentimental. Since the service was our child we were reluctant to make a decision about closing it faster and limit losses. We’ve been tricking ourselves thinking that everything would be fine while we couldn’t get the application back to work properly.Building a startup is hard, it is not a hobby. It’s a mindset and an attitude. It can be both the best and the worst thing in your life. I wouldn’t say it’s easy. But I will surely spend my last dollar and all my hours to have this opportunity again. It’s worth it.

Hi, my name is Dave and I'm the CoFounder of Blogger Outreach software NinjaOutreach.com.Last year I published a post here on Reddit entitled:In September 2014 We Set A Goal To Build A $20k/month SaaS Business In 1 Year – Here’s What HappenedYou can read that here:While I recommend anyone interested in our story to read that post to get the proper background on the start of the company, I’ll highlight the TL;DR as it’s written there:January 14: We launch the business several months later than we expected after 2.5 months in beta and a few hundred people trying it out.January – July: We make a ton of mistakes and the business “grows” to around $3k mrrAugust – December: We make more mistakes, but we do a lot of things right, and end the year over $10k mrr, short of our original stretch goal, but in line with our “first” goal which was $10k mrr, (although not in 365 days from the original statement, but within 365 days from launch). And at the end of that very long post, there is a small line that is easy to overlook. It readsOur goal for 2016 is $30k and 1k customers! So here I am ready to report on our progress, and again I’ll start with another TL;DR:We did it.Here’s our REVENUE statement from the last few months plus the Year To Date. The profit statement is not very impressive because we invest everything back into the business such as new hires, etc—but it is positive. Customers actually turned out less than 1k, but because we increased prices we hit our goal anyway.Click to view screenshot hereIf that piques your interest, here is a bit more about what actually happened.January - MarchTo summarize these three months, the business didn’t really grow much at all. Actually, it flatlined around $10k and was like that for most of December through March. In fact, in one month we actually went BACKWARDS in MRR, which, for a subscription business, is a big no-no.It’s important to look back at a time like this when we’ve actually hit our goal and remember that things didn’t always look this good. The year actually started off terribly and I was legitimately thinking that this might be it i.e. that the business wouldn’t grow anymore.Frankly, we were running out of ideas.Given what I know now, there are some pretty important lessons here, those being:You can finish strong even with a slow start. Don’t lose hope until you really have tried everything.April - MaySo, how did we get out of it?The biggest thing we pulled out of nowhere during this time was “acquiring” my personal blog.I had been running a personal blog on marketing and business for about two years called SelfMadeBusinessman. While it never lived up to my expectations, I had definitely worked hard on it and it had a decent amount of traffic and quality white hat links.Unfortunately, on account of the fact that I was actually running a business as opposed to just blogging about business, I no longer had much time to keep up with the blog. Eventually, I stopped writing on it altogether and it was just sitting there collecting dust.Right around this time, I read a post from Matthew Barby about acquiring websites for traffic and it sparked an idea to transfer all my site’s content to NinjaOutreach and do a full redirect.Mind you, this was not an easy decision. Although it wasn’t making any money, I believe based on the traffic alone I could have sold it on a market like Flippa for at least mid-four figures. Additionally, SelfMadeBusinessman represented my personal brand and was a source of networking and forming contacts. And of course, I figured one day I would go back to it, and I’d be better off not having to start from scratch.Still, NinjaOutreach has been my number one priority since the beginning, so we decided to go through with it. NinjaOutreach basically swallowed SelfMadeBusinessman. The traffic boost from this after a month or so was significant. Within two months we had doubled our traffic, and doubling our traffic meant more sign ups and gave us the fuel to grow again. Here’s what that looked like:Click to view screenshot hereSurprisingly, over the course of last year, we never pulled the trigger to acquire another website. However, that changed just a few days ago when we bought one off of Flippa, which is in the process of being redirected. Whether or not it produces similar results is yet to be seen, but it’s definitely one of our goals this year to find and acquire a few websites. If you have one you’d like to sell, hit me up!We also launched massive link building campaigns throughout the year using our prospecting and outreach tool. One of our earlier campaigns involved broken link building work where we leveraged thousands of bad-for-SEO dead URLS leading to the now defunct company, Topsy. Long story short, we contacted bloggers who linked to Topsy in their posts and suggested our tool as an alternative where we provide the content and they link back to us instead. This campaign alone drove hundreds of backlinks to our site in a span of a few months. We also launched a competitor link building campaign where we contacted bloggers who’ve included some of our competitors in their posts. We reached out and asked if they were interested in also adding NinjaOutreach to their articles or resources. This campaign received a pretty high response rate (72%) and generated close to 150 unique inbound links for our site.Overall, it helped us gain higher Domain Authority and ranking, taking our site from DA 30+ to DA 50.June - JulyDoubling our traffic in such a short time was huge, no doubt about it, but at the end of the day all it really does is move the ceiling higher, but it doesn't remove it altogether. Basically, we had bought ourselves time, but we needed to find new ways to keep up the momentum. Two major things happened in June / July that helped us do that. The first was a promotion / partnership with Warrior Forum where they sold our product for relatively cheap. We had done something similar with AppSumo the year prior and it was a huge success. Now we wanted to try a new audience. While the launch from Warrior Forum didn’t quite deliver the kind of revenue we were hoping for, it was the highest grossing month we had all year and gave us new traffic, links, and exposure. While we aren’t looking to do something similar in the near future, it’s definitely something I recommend for a new, small business. The next step was upping our prices. We had upped our prices a year before in August and experienced a lot of growth from that.Firstly, there is generally an uptick in sign-ups as people want to be grandfathered in to the old prices.Secondly, the new sign ups are worth more after the change, and although the number of sign-ups might go down slightly, in our experience, the added value from the customer far outweighs it.This is something I have heard from a lot of other business owners and it’s why the general advice is to make sure you continue to increase your prices as you add value to the product. To give you some context on the increase, when NinjaOutreach first launched, our prices ranged from $19 - $149. Now they range from $49 - $599 and we have people on all plans. As a side note, it really does feel a lot better having fewer customers but of higher value. It helps keep customer support more manageable and allows us to be more personal in our approach. For example, we’ve always invited people to have free consultation calls with us, but when people are only paying you $19, it feels like you’re selling your time for peanuts.August - DecemberBelieve it or not, there weren’t any major tricks pulled out in the most recent months that I would describe as “game-changing”.At the end of the day, it’s mostly just math. If you have the sign ups, the conversion rate, and the customer value in the right alignment, you’re going to grow. Not forever, of course, but for us to hit our goal, it was enough.Although there are a few things I thought we did well.We also continued to improve the product and the traffic during that time, but mostly through the same ways we always have, i.e content marketing and influencer marketing. One new channel we added was retargeting, which has definitely helped us be more efficient with turning our traffic into signups. Most notably, during this last half of the year, we’ve been able to bring on 5 new employees, which has helped tremendously with a number of things we’ve been able to get done. Though, I should also mention we had to let go over 2 other ones, which is never enjoyable.Currently, we’re up to 14 people including the 2 active co-founders.Our Next GoalFrom here, we want to get to 1M in Annual Recurring Revenue, which is more than double where we currently are at—so we have a long way to go.But, since it pays to be ambitious, we’re going to try to do it by the end of the year, mainly by sticking with the team we have and putting the right processes into place. Some other revenue streams we’re excited about are building out our services. For example, we just launched The Ninja Academy, which is a 12-module course on how to grow a business via Inbound Marketing. You can learn more about it here:We also have our Done For You link building services, where we leverage our network of bloggers to get you featured. More on that here:If we properly market all of these and continue to grow the subscriptions, I think we can have a great year.Happy to answer any questions the community has!

The 9-Step SEO Strategy for 2019 [NEW]
Today Iâ€
m going to show you a VERY effective SEO strategy for 2019. (Step-by-step) In fact, I recently used these exact steps to rank #1 in Google for “Video SEO.
And “keyword research tool.
Letâ€
s dive right in…
Step #1: Find an “Opportunity Keywordâ€ Step #2: Analyze Googleâ€
s First Page Step #3: Create Something Different… Or Better Step #4: Add a Hook Step #5: Optimize For On-Page SEO Step #6: Optimize For User Intent Step #7: Make Your Content Look Awesome Step #8: Build Links to Your Page Step #9: Improve and Update Your Content Bonus Step #1: Increase Your Domain Authority Bonus Step #2: Build a Community on Your Site
Step #1: Find an “Opportunity Keywordâ€ Letâ€
s face it: A #1 ranking isnâ€
t what it used to be. Thatâ€
s because Google keeps adding stuff to the search results. For example, look at the keyword “SEO Tools:
Like most search results, you’ve got ads at the top of the page. Plus, a Featured Snippet:
A “People also Ask box:
THEN you get to the #1 result:
Thatâ€
s why you want to focus on Opportunity Keywords. Opportunity Keywords are keywords with a high organic click-through-rate (CTR)
