Star Trek Novel Review #5
Spock’s World by Diane Duane (1988)
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to buy a copy of this book so I read the first half at a library (excuse the state of the book cover), and listened to the second half over audiobook on youtube. There’s a pretty large selection of Star Trek audiobooks available on youtube that are voice acted by the cast and have full sound effects and music. I’d very much recommend checking them out! Thanks for reading, peace and long life!
Summary :
While preparing the Enterprise to embark on a new mission, word gets out that Vulcan is in favour of seceding from the Federation— a decision that would force all Vulcans to return home and all non-Vulcans off the planet. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are invited to give speeches on Vulcan before the final vote is held and set out to find out what caused this sentiment there.
After extensive research, the origin of the anti-human propaganda and pro-secession rhetoric is tracked down to none other than T’Pring, Spock’s ex-fiance. Spock confronts her, and she reveals her plan was to drive a rift between humans and Vulcans as a means of revenge on Spock after the passing of her bondmate Stonn. She blames Spock for her misfortune and plans to destroy his life and career. Damn girl!
At the meeting, Bones gives a showstopping speech and Sarek gives a seething counter which ends in him stepping down as ambassador. Bones exposes that members of the anti-Federation movement were in favour of seccession because they had unfair dibs on the Federation land, convincing Sarek to change his stance. In the middle of Kirk’s speech, Sarek calls him away to visit T’Pau on her deathbed. T’Pau explains her attempts to counter the pro-secessionists before giving her katra to Spock’s mother and passing away. Spock gives his speech, and the vote is held.
Their efforts were successful and Vulcan remains in the federation.
Review :
[I will not be posting excerpts this time as I do not have a physical copy of the book]
I loved this novel! This is no doubt the best Star Trek novel I’ve read so far. I’d been very excited to read a Diane Duane novel for a while now, and it very much lives up to its reputation. Spock’s World was everything I want in a Star Trek story; good world building, good characterisation, and an excellent premise. There seemed like a real, palpable threat here with the secession of Vulcan, and good points were given on both sides of the argument to make it a believable conflict. Spock’s World tackles the xenophobia between humans and Vulcans while also highlighting the camaraderie between our races— it was a lot of fun to hear the speeches from Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.
The book also has many funny moments. Good humour is sort of rare in these novels so far, but there were about 5 moments that really made me smile. A Horta is introduced as being in Starfleet and the whole scene with it was so silly and adorable!
Also little interesting factoid : I believe this book has been semi-acknowledged within DISCO and SNW canon since they canonised the novel’s spelling of T’Khut, the sister planet to Vulcan. Cool!
Conclusion :
I would fully recommend this book, and as soon as I can I will be getting my own physical copy of it to reread. It’s honestly going to be hard to top this one since I enjoyed it so much!

Summary: Ibis’ childhood
Ibis was born to Ulene Deadwyler, vampire with the pink hair, and Katra Queen, witch. He was one of quadruplets, and a total of 7 kids to his parents. Quadruplets names: Bennet, Blaze, and Timothy. Other siblings: twins Etrigan and Ariani, and Ashlyn. All kids but Benny and Timmy were born vampires, and all quads + Ari were born witches.
Ulene and Katra got married after the twins were born, and after that they moved back to his hometown in a custom built house (designed by him) in St Erast. After the quads were born, Katra started working in a videogame company. Ulene learned his mom was expecting a new baby brother, meaning Ibis would have an uncle younger than him. The only incident of note during Ibis’ toddler years was his mom getting kidnapped. Ulene thought initially it was his clan’s crazy way of trying to get him to accept his position as king so he went to Bridgeport to get her back, but it turned out to be his best friends clan, the supposed rival clan, because they were responding to Fabian’s desires. Fabian confessed to his friends that he wasn’t over her and was a big part of the reason he’d so happily accepted his position as king of his clan in Bridgeport.
When Ibis was 5 years old the family took a trip to China. While exploring town a vampire approached Ibis and greeted him as ‘king’ prompting him to ask his dad what that was all about. Ulene came clean and told him a light version of the whole clan shtick. That their family is originally from Bridgeport and the founders of the Notte clan, that his grandma (Ulene’s mom, Lara) ran away because she didn’t want to take over despite having the pink hair. How Ulene himself had gone to Bridgeport and refused the clan too, because their beliefs didn’t align with his. But yes, technically Ibis is next in line and is to become King once he’s of age. Currently there’s an interim leader: Grayson. Ibis found the whole thing exciting and loudly proclaim that he can’t wait to be King.
Throughout his childhood Ibis showed indifference towards school, unlike Benny, but a predisposition to his dad’s old chemistry set. He quickly discovered every possible potion that could be made with it and moved on to other potions. He obviously did regular potions in the cauldron, like his mom taught him, but in an attempt to find a more creative outlet he found the bar. His parents weren’t thrilled that he was playing on the bar, but had to admit he had a knack for making some yummy cocktails. Besides this Ibis, and his siblings and their friends (Pubert and the Gale triplets, Kiki, Gen, and Ai) were all rather well behaved during their childhood…except for the occasional pranks.
Finally when Ibis was 8 it was time for the family to go to Egypt, and for Ulene to take Ibis to meet the Sphinx. While he took all vampire kids to the Hatshepsut Temple to teach them more about their powers, and to relate the legend of Hatshepsut, like his mother had told him, he took only Ibis to the Sphinx. Just like Lara had done when Ulene was his age, Ulene took Ibis through the tomb while telling him more about their specific Pink hair powers. Besides inheriting the Bridgeport clan (and being King, like Ibis cheerfully pointed out), the Pink hair is said to be a blessing meaning that The Great One chose them and is watching over them, and that they’ll eventually must reproduce and have an heir, another vampire with pink hair. They’re supposed to come to the Sphinx to get blessed every so many years, or at least that’s what Lara said. However this visit went wrong, when they arrived to the room with the statue and talked to the Sphinx, she got angry at something Ibis said and banished him, much to Ulene’s horror. Instead of bringing him back right away she sent him (and Katra) on a quest to retrieve Horus’ Eye to be able to ‘see’ him again. They did and brought him back, but Ibis is now permanently scarred by the event and often when he goes to sleep instead has nightmares in which he’s back in the black abyss place the Sphinx sent him to.
A year after, on Halloween, Ibis got kidnapped by some crazy gray fairy that wanted to take his special Pink hair power for herself. She managed to capture him, and his siblings, and had sent zombies as distractors for his parents. Thankfully his parents found them in time and were able to save their kids. It was the only time Ulene seriously considered killing someone but he didn’t have to, Katra did, and he was surprised to be ok with it. Ibis learned just how desirable his Pink hair power is, and Katra was able to make a best selling videogame out of the night, propelling her career.
For the most part Ibis ignored his nightmares, he didn’t really share with anyone what was going on. Whenever he couldn’t sleep he’d bunk with one of his siblings, most often Blaze who knew he was having nightmares but no details beyond that. He told his parents that he’d sometimes had a nightmare where he was back, and described the place, which Katra only concluded was some other inter plane/dimension/world, but didn’t know much more beyond that. His parents didn’t know how often he really was having nightmares. What they did find out was that Ibis was already capable of reading minds at 10 years old, younger than all his siblings, and most vampires.

Mata Vaishno Devi: A Helicopter Destination Guide to India’s Most Popular Tour
Nestled in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in India. Every year, millions of devotees embark on this spiritual journey to seek blessings from the goddess. The path to Mata Vaishno Devi can be a physically demanding trek, but modern conveniences like helicopter services have made it easier for pilgrims to reach the shrine. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned pilgrim, this guide will help you navigate the options for a Mata Vaishno Devi Kashmir tour by helicopter, providing a seamless and memorable spiritual experience.
Why Choose a Helicopter for the Mata Vaishno Devi Tour?
The pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi requires a trek of approximately 12 kilometers from the base at Katra to the holy shrine. While many pilgrims choose to walk the path as a form of devotion, others may find the distance or the steep terrain challenging. That’s where the helicopter service comes in, offering a convenient and time-saving option.
Here are a few reasons why a helicopter ride is a popular choice for the Mata Vaishno Devi Kashmir package:
Time-Saving: A helicopter ride reduces the journey from hours to just 8 to 10 minutes, allowing you more time for prayer and exploration.
Comfort: For those with physical limitations, elderly pilgrims, or families with small children, a helicopter tour ensures a comfortable and stress-free journey.
Aerial Views: Flying above the scenic Trikuta Mountains offers breathtaking views of the lush green landscapes, adding a unique experience to your pilgrimage.
Efficient Travel: If you’re short on time and want to make the most of your Mata Vaishno Devi Kashmir tour, a helicopter is the fastest and most efficient mode of transport.
Booking Your Helicopter Ride: The Process
Helicopter services for the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage are operated by approved providers from the base camp at Katra to Sanjichhat, which is just 2.5 kilometers from the holy shrine. Here’s how you can book your ride:
Online Booking: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board offers an online platform where devotees can book helicopter tickets. It is advisable to book tickets well in advance, especially during peak seasons and festival periods, as slots fill up quickly.
Ticket Price: The cost of a one-way helicopter ride is approximately INR 1,200 to 1,700 per person, while a round trip can range between INR 2,400 and INR 3,000 per person. Prices may vary, so it’s important to check the official website for the most updated rates.
Timing: Helicopter services operate from early morning (around 8:00 AM) to late afternoon (4:00 PM), depending on weather conditions. Make sure to arrive at the helipad at least 1-2 hours before your scheduled departure.
Luggage Restrictions: Pilgrims are advised to carry light baggage, as helicopters have strict weight limits. Typically, a 5 kg limit per passenger is enforced.
Helicopter Ride Experience: From Katra to Sanjichhat
Your Mata Vaishno Devi Kashmir package begins with a helicopter ride from Katra’s helipad. The journey offers spectacular views of the Trikuta Mountains and the surrounding valleys. Upon reaching Sanjichhat, pilgrims can either walk or take a pony or palki (palanquin) for the final 2.5 kilometers to the shrine. The climb is more manageable from this point, with paved paths and resting areas along the way.
The spiritual energy of the place is palpable as you approach the Bhawan, where the main shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is located. After offering your prayers and performing rituals, you can choose to trek back down or take the helicopter for your return journey.
Best Time to Visit Mata Vaishno Devi
The pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi is open year-round, but certain times of the year are more popular than others:
Navratri Festival: During the Navratri festival in March/April and September/October, the shrine experiences a surge in visitors. The atmosphere is festive, and special prayers are held in honor of the goddess.
Summer (March to June): This is the ideal time for most pilgrims, as the weather is pleasant and suitable for trekking.
Winter (December to February): While the winter season brings cold temperatures and occasional snowfall, the shrine remains open. However, helicopter services may be affected by weather conditions, so it’s important to plan accordingly.
Exploring Beyond Mata Vaishno Devi: Adding Kashmir to Your Tour
Many pilgrims extend their Mata Vaishno Devi Kashmir tour to explore the scenic beauty of Kashmir. Known for its mesmerizing landscapes, serene lakes, and snow-capped mountains, Kashmir is a destination that complements the spiritual journey to Mata Vaishno Devi.
Here are a few popular destinations to include in your Mata Vaishno Devi Kashmir package:
Srinagar: The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar is famous for its beautiful Dal Lake, houseboats, and Mughal gardens. It’s a peaceful retreat after completing the pilgrimage.
Gulmarg: Known as the “Meadow of Flowers,” Gulmarg is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. In winter, it transforms into a skiing destination, while summer offers scenic walks and golfing opportunities.
Pahalgam: Another must-visit location, Pahalgam is famous for its lush green valleys and the Lidder River. It’s a great place to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of the region.
Sonamarg: Situated at a higher altitude, Sonamarg is known for its pristine glaciers and trekking trails. It’s a great destination for those seeking adventure and stunning mountain views.
Tips for a Smooth Mata Vaishno Devi Helicopter Tour
Book Early: Helicopter tickets are in high demand, so make sure to book your slot as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Check the Weather: Helicopter services are subject to weather conditions, so always check the forecast before your trip to avoid cancellations or delays.
Carry Essentials: Bring essentials like water, snacks, and comfortable walking shoes for the final trek from Sanjichhat to the shrine.
Respect Shrine Etiquette: Follow the rules and regulations of the shrine, including dress codes and conduct during prayers, to ensure a respectful and fulfilling pilgrimage.
Conclusion
The Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage is not just a spiritual journey but an adventure into the heart of India’s cultural and religious heritage. By opting for a helicopter ride, you can make the journey more comfortable and time-efficient, allowing you to focus on your prayers and exploration. Combine your pilgrimage with a Mata Vaishno Devi Kashmir package, and you’ll not only seek the blessings of the goddess but also experience the unparalleled beauty of the Kashmir Valley.

Summary: Ibis’ childhood cont
At 11 Ibis got his first girlfriend, a girl from his class named Anna, because his older siblings got in relationships too and that made it cool. Ulene inadvertently told Ibis that the house rule for girls was that they (he and Katra) had to meet them first before they could spend time over. Kiki couldn’t stand her so she was happy when they finally broke up later.
Another trip! This time the family went to Monte Vista. Both Ari and Eti now had boyfriends who also tagged along in this trip. Ulene rented a big house for the 11 of them. They met an old fae, Agatha, who recognized the pink hair. They discovered that she was related to them, sort of, she identified herself as the adoptive mother of a Lewis Notte, which was the family’s last name in Bridgeport. Lara changed it and then adopted Deadwyler after marrying Alan. Lewis didn’t have pink hair but his wife did and Agatha had a picture of them. Also during this trip Ibis met Francesca, who believed him to be 15 instead of almost 13. When Ulene found out he made him tell the truth which obviously meant she didn’t want to see him anymore. Before the trip ended Ulene and Ibis had a little chat about the responsibility of having a Pink haired heir.
Ibis’ more rebellious years begin. Before he’d broken rules and gotten punished but now he started taking things to new extremes. He got his piercings, eventually got his tattoos, started smoking, and making more drinks and the drugs him and his friends (Kiki and Pubert) would smoke. He didn’t care that he was breaking his mom’s biggest rule of absolutely no drugs or smoking. He also tried to date Kiki, and they hooked up for a bit, but when he wanted to take a step further she said no and everything ended.
10th grade and over the summer Ibis came up with a ridiculous plan that would end with him getting laid. His friends laughed when he told them and assured him they’d help but it wasn’t going to work. “No girl would fall for something so stupid!”. Well, one did. Ibis started ‘tutoring’ girls, first having lunch at school, then taking them home for dinner with the family so everyone would get a chance to meet, and finally ending in his room where he did everything he could to not open a book. Taia fell, hard, for him, and so their non-relationship relationship started. Saylor, Taia’s best friend, was vocally against this and even intimidated Ibis with her half-demon powers, but he took it in good stride because he had no intention of causing any harm. Because he lied he got grounded and punished, but he kept sneaking around to see her, and the whole thing started a vicious cycle. His mom was also on his ass for smoking which also kept extending his punishments. At the end of the year his school work had suffered so much due to absences that he had two choices, all boys military school, or Yinera Ealin Academy for genius occults.
He chose the Academy. He boarded there in Moonlight Falls for the last two years of high school\, where he made new friends and ‘dated’ new interesting girls. His roommate Kayne (and his brother Kale) became his new best friends, along with twins Emma and Grace. Emma was a frequent visitor of Ibis’ bed while Grace dated Kayne. Ibis also secretly ‘dated’ prom queen, class president, and actual fairy princess Ella, and a bunch of other girls, much to her distaste.
Ibis returned home to a Graduation party where everyone, even from neighboring towns, attended. Benny finally sealed the deal with girlfriend Gen, Timmy found some courage and did his first magic show performance in front of a crowd, Blaze and her new buddies escaped town after killing a guy right outside the venue, and Ibis hooked up with Taia after not having seen her for two years. Then it was off to college for Benny and Timmy, but off to travel the world for Ibis. With either friends (Kayne mostly) or family (his grandma Lara) he went to many cities around the world and had fun. He even visited his siblings in college.
