Breaking Horses at Muskoka Farm

The thoroughbred industry is a major contributor to Australia’s regional economy. Horse breaking is an important part of preparing racehorses to become comfortable in bridles and saddles, which prevents behavioural problems down the track.
Located near Gunderman, Muskoka Farm is a world class facility that offers breaking, spelling and agistment. This 280-acre complex features five stable barns with 58 stables, a two-kilometer crusher dust track, 27 day yards and 10 large spelling paddocks. It also includes a high speed treadmill and private jetty/pontoon. To know more about Pre Training, visit the Muskoka Farm website or call (02)45663106.
Located in Gunderman, Muskoka Farm is surrounded by natural bushland and national parks and is one of the world’s best horse spelling and training facilities. Its 280 acres provide the perfect location for fine-tuning the science of race horse care. The facility offers breaking, pre-training, spelling and agistment services for thoroughbred horses.
The Thoroughbred industry makes a significant contribution to Australia’s regional economy and supports thousands of jobs. One of the most important aspects of the industry is horse breaking, which prepares racehorses for a bridle and saddle. Getting this process right helps prevent behavioural problems down the line.
The property features five stable barns with 58 stables, 27 day yards and 10 large, fully-fenced spelling yards. It also has a private jetty/pontoon, outdoor pool and two bedroom guest house. Inglis Rural Property is handling the sale of this unique, one-of-a-kind property.
Taking a young horse from an animal that bucks at the sight of a bridle to one that can carry and obey a rider takes a rare skill set. That’s the task of trainers like Toby Pracey who uses violence-free methods to break in horses. He has broken in countless group 1 winners, including Dan Excel and Redzel. He’s also a specialist in barrier training, desensitizing horses to cold metal and noise.
Located near Wisemans Ferry, Muskoka Farm is a world class pre-training facility. It offers breaking, spelling and agistment as well as being a registered AQIS quarantine operation. This 280-acre property is surrounded by national parks and natural bushland and is the perfect environment to tailor care to match the physiology of race horses. It features a 2.4 kilometre crusher dust track and straight as well as an arena & round yard and 10 large spelling paddocks. The pristine complex is close to Gosford, Wisemans Ferry and about 80 minutes from Sydney’s major racetracks.
The 280-acre Muskoka Farm has housed many a splurge-worthy thoroughbred, and is renowned as one of the world’s best pre-training facilities. In fact, some of the horses that have been broken in or trained here have gone on to win races around the globe.
Geography drove history in the Muskoka area, as the lake chains and ubiquitous rocks made the land hard to penetrate. Even though it was well suited to hunting and trapping, early settlers found that the soil was too dense for farming.
Today, the rich natural environment and robust ecological diversity that is the foundation of a healthy economic economy in Muskoka are at risk. The District of Muskoka is working with its thirteen municipalities (Mayor, Chair and Reeve) and other community stakeholders to develop a plan for protecting our unique environment. Among the activities underway is an open community-based Listening Session to take place on May 30th. Click here to learn more.

Before moving to this house in Flemington, Leah Holt and Oliver Whiteley were living in a one-bedroom warehouse in Melbourne’s CBD.
‘It was a great place, but it didn’t have an outdoor space, and since we were both working from home due to Covid (and newly living together, eeek!), it felt a little claustrophobic,’ says Leah.
In search of a larger home and outdoor space, they ended up in Flemington in mid 2020, where Leah found her dream home complete with high ceilings, beautiful ornate details, and most importantly, a backyard. ‘I just kept walking around saying “I LOVE IT” repeatedly,’ recalls Leah of the inspection.
The home was newly renovated, so all that was needed was Leah’s styling to bring it to life. As the operations and projects manager at Curated Spaces, and owner of vintage furniture studio LH Design Hub, she luckily had access to some amazing pieces – the only challenge was choosing the right ones!
‘I think I am on my 12th set of dining chairs!,’ says Leah. ‘Oliver knows not to get attached to anything, as it will probably be gone in a few weeks.’
Interestingly, this career path is an entirely new direction for Leah, who was working in the higher education sector up to 18 months ago. ‘Creating LH Design Hub and having the opportunity to sell exclusively via Curated Spaces has been the best decision I have ever made,’ she says.
One element of Leah and Oliver’s decoration that isn’t going anywhere is their growing art collection, including works by Angie Pai and Alexandria Park. They’ve also switched out the rental’s lighting pendants for Shades Launay, and worked hard to transform the backyard.
‘Even though we are renting, I still thought it was important to buy and source pieces that tell a story, and I hope that is evident throughout the house.’
Our backyard has been a real passion project for Oliver… we have our own veggie patch now, and have planted a whole bunch of ferns, hanging baskets and flowers to make it feel romantic and relaxing,’ says Leah.
From the bedroom, to the living room, and the outdoor area, this home now feels like a true reflection of Leah and Oliver. Leah hopes it looks the way it makes them feel – warm, cosy and safe.
‘As soon as we walk through the door, we feel at home and completely comfortable and relaxed,’ she says. ‘We have signed on for another year’s lease and we couldn’t be happier.’

Picture Perfect: 10 of the world’s most Instagrammable boutique hotels
In a digital age in which more people are on some form of social media than not, postcards have given way to posts on the ever-popular Instagram grid, a picture-perfect world of ‘punny’ captions, hashtags, and emojis. Scrolling, swiping, double-tapping, and story highlighting have all but replaced printed photo albums of half-blurred holiday snaps on film you needed to get developed. With so many photogenic places to choose from, we’ve rounded up the best boutique hotel Instagram accounts to follow for your daily dose of wanderlust – bookmark these #nofilterneeded beauties for your next aesthetic adventure, and don’t forget to enjoy the view while you’re there…
Halcyon House, Cabarita Beach – Australia
@_halcyonhouse
Cornflower blue muddled in an eclectic mixture of pastel pinks and soft greens, a patchwork of prints and mis-matched frames alongside hatstands and fabric headboards, seaside touches of shell trinket dishes and marine life illustrations. And oh, the pool. With its nautical blue and white striped loungers lined with swaying palms and drapes billowing in the Cabarita Beach breeze. We could go on forever about every aesthetic corner of Halcyon House, our Most Liked Hotel of 2020, but we’ll let you do some scrolling through @_halcyonhouse and its equally gorgeous restaurant @_paperdaisy_ and lifestyle account @halcyonatelier instead.
From the feed…

Castello di Reschio, Umbria – Italy
@reschio
It’s not difficult to see why Castello di Reschio, a meticulously designed thousand-year-old castle on the Umbrian-Tuscan border, was recognised with the Most Inspirational Interiors at this year’s SLH Awards, along with being one of our Highly Commended Most Liked Hotels. Dating back to 1050, there is a story behind every lovingly restored terracotta brick, with bespoke furniture handpicked by architect Count Benedikt Bolza and his wife Nencia Corsini. Personal touches are hidden within each room, from vintage photographs to ornaments discovered in local antique markets. Think hand-stitched linen curtains, ancient wooden beams running through the ceiling, exposed stonework dotted with original oil paintings, and impossibly smooth marble finishing in the bathrooms. And this is all before you’ve even started to explore the 1,500-hectare estate, scattered with traditional farmhouses available for exclusive hire, a state-of-the-art stable block home to some of the world’s finest purebred Spanish horses (look out for their dressage videos on @reschio), and a rustic outdoor pool overlooked by Il Torrino, the castle’s original watchtower turned trendy pool bar.
From the feed…

Canaves Oia Suites, Santorini – Greece
@canavesoia
One of the most photographed destinations in the world, the cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings covered in fuschia flowers, and Cycladic blue cupolas of Santorini fill the Instagram feeds of most travel enthusiasts. The pristine white rooms of Canaves Oia Suites are set into the dark volcanic rocks, each with individual terraces overlooking the Aegean Sea. Every shade of blue can be found on @canavesoia which keeps its palette as simple as its striking surroundings.
From the feed…

Cap Rocat, Mallorca – Spain
@cap_rocat
The dusky pink hues of this former military fortress’ walls are the perfect backdrop for any picture, whether it’s by the drawbridge, the palm-filled terrace, that infinity pool cut into the cliff, or the private rock beach with direct access to the sea. There is a photo opportunity at every twist and turn, not to mention onboard the hotel’s private yacht. There’s a touch of Mallorcan magic about sleeping in the fortified citadel of Cap Rocat, while the naturally lit hammam excavated in the heart of the fortress is an absolute must-see. Satisfy your Mediterranean cravings with a scroll through @cap_rocat in all its golden hour glory.
From the feed…

Miramonti Boutique Hotel, The Dolomites – Italy
@miramontiboutiquehotel
A spellbinding setting in sunshine or snow, Miramonti Boutique Hotel is picture-perfect all year round. With its horizon-edged infinity pool and a 360-degree Alpine vista, the natural beauty of this high altitude retreat and its mountainside surroundings is captured on @miramontiboutiquehotel in endless forest-fringed and water-reflected shots. Foodies can enjoy dinner with a view at the hotel’s 1,230-metre high Panorama Restaurant, or share raclette and homemade patisserie in the 19th-century, wood panelled Stube.
From the feed…

Le Coucou Méribel, The Alps – France
@lecoucoumeribel
Be sure to pack your most stylish pair of salopettes for a stay at Le Coucou Méribel, whose Instagram feed looks like it’s straight from a Vogue ski editorial. Pierre Yovanovitch’s chic interiors run from the rooms to the restaurants at this ski-in ski-out lodge, with geometric shapes, teddy bear chairs, pale wooden tones and wall-length windows to let the bluebird daylight in. After exploring the 330 pistes at your feet, leave your boots to dry in the elegant Ski Room while you take a dip in one of the spa’s indoor-outdoor heated infinity pools.
From the feed…

Hôtel Lou Pinet, Saint Tropez – France
@hotelloupinet
The effortlessly chic Saint Tropez sister hotel to Le Coucou, every inch of Hôtel Lou Pinet oozes Riviera glamour. This hotel was made to be photographed, with its rustic rouge umbrellas lining the pine and lavender scented pool, the Côte d’Azur blue shutters, and graphic printed interiors. Celebrating local artists and renowned French designers, the carefully curated grid of @hotelloupinet shares colourful artworks alongside its own images, creating a pretty palette of Provençal shades and Mediterranean hues.
From the feed…

Hôtel Crillon le Brave, Provence – France
@hotelcrillonlebrave
Completing the trio of stylish sister hotels, the nine stone houses of Hôtel Crillon le Brave are bathed in the famous Provençal light that once inspired the sketches of Cezanne and Van Gogh. The quintessentially French interiors have been given a modern twist, with terracotta tiles, colourful throws and handpicked antique furniture. Sprigs of lavender and a straw sunhat are thoughtfully laid on the end of the bed, giving this château a rustic yet romantic feel. Look out over the rolling hills dotted with cypress trees from the hotel’s relaxed dining space, La Table du Ventoux, with a glass of the region’s famous wine in hand. @hotelcrillonlebrave is very much in keeping with its sisters’ Instagram aesthetic, while flower-laden bicycles in lavender fields and wicker baskets of organic produce give it a distinctly Provençal personality.
From the feed…

Storfjord Hotel, Skodje – Norway
@storfjordhotel
Minimalist Scandi-chic is all over the Instagram feeds of fashion, lifestyle, and travel influencers – but nowhere does it quite like Storfjord Hotel, a secluded log cabin on a wooded, fjord fringed hilltop in Alpine Norway. Step into a Scandinavian folk tale of antler chandeliers, soft throws over antique furniture, and a soothing neutral palette to complement natural materials. With the Sunmøre Alps on your doorstep, you’ll want to photograph the landscape as much as this hotel’s interiors. Hygge hunters will find an invitingly cosy aesthetic of homemade honey, crackling fireplaces, and snow-dusted scenery on @storfjordhotel – it’ll soon be top of your winter wish list.
From the feed…

Quinta Da Comporta – Wellness Boutique Resort, Comporta – Portugal
@quintadacomporta
Imagined and invented by renowned Portuguese architect Miguel Câncio Martins, Quinta Da Comporta blends seamlessly with its surroundings, from the sun-bleached woods to the sandy furnishings. Step inside to whitewashed walls and cool-toned touches, reflective of both traditional Portuguese style and contemporary design. Each room has a luxurious beach hut feel, with rustic-style furniture drawn from a natural colour palette. If you’re in need of some interior inspiration, look no further than @quintadacomporta – start planning your dream home, and holiday, all at once.

Wicker circle chair Placement
It doesn’t matter how big or how small your house is, what matters is how well you have decorated your house. Having a well-furnished small apartment is far better than having a big home which is difficult to maintain. The domain of “well-furnished” is not only limited to fresh-smelling paint and lavish woodwork but also includes modern styled furniture. Today, the market is full of eye-pleasing furniture that includes unique shaped sofas, round couches, solid wood coffee tables and edgy armchairs decorated with royal looking cloth and fine motifs.
But are you someone who loves to sit on a bean bag to do office work or just to relax? Are you someone who looks for modern furniture with a plus point of extra comfort? Then you are in the right place. I’m going to introduce you to a chair that is going to provide you the comfort of a bean bag but will last much longer than it. It is called wicker circle chair.
Wicker chairs or furniture are made up of rattan. Rattan is a naturally renewable palm that grows in the tropical regions of Asia and Australia. In Asia, rattan furniture is very common and is an invaluable part of rural people’s livelihoods, especially in South and Southeast Asia. In Bali and Maldives, you might find rattan furniture in top-notch resorts and hotels. One basic rattan product that is used by people of rural areas, as well as urban areas in Asia, is rattan baskets. Nowadays, Rattan furniture which includes sofas, tables, bookshelves, cupboards and much more is gaining fame across the globe due to its unique look and dazzling appearance. In the United States, rattan and cane furniture have become a lighter option for the heavy furnishings being produced. It is regularly being used indoors and outdoors.
Rattan furniture’s cost varies from being very reasonable to a little expensive, but not as expensive as wooden furniture. Also, rattan wicker furniture comes into multiple variants thus gives you a vast choice to choose from.
The round wicker chair also comes into different sizes and has multiple variants. Let’s look at them.
Papasan Natural Rattan Wicker Rocking Round Chair

This papasan swivel chair would instantly enhance the look of your living room. You can place it next to a deep red painted wall or in the favorite corner of your room. You will certainly enjoy its comfort. Please note that it is a single person chair. It combines a sustainable rattan frame with exclusive rattan weaving. It is lightweight enough to be moved easily yet stable and sturdy so as not to tip over easily. The best thing about this chair is that it usually comes with a plain fully tufted huge cushion which adds to its comfort.
Usually, rattan products are perfectly made up of good quality products and are crafted in a very fine manner, but they demand a bit extra care than wooden furniture. If you are interested to buy one, then you can buy it from here at Amazon.

Vintage Wicker Cone Chair
A person always drools over great design, from fashion to furniture. He is always in search of things that provide him comfort yet look fashionable and trendy. Designers usually take their inspiration from ancient, vintage goods and try to create a new product that is a composition of several vintage ideas. One such design is of this wicker chair.
The sitting portion of the chair is handmade from sturdy wicker while the legs are made up of solid wrought iron. The hairpin-shaped legs of this chair give it a modern look. This chair also serves for one person sitting.
This chair is perfect to be placed in front of a chinoiserie painted wall or even outdoor on the terrace. To your choice, you can place this chair in your study room as well, near the window so that you can enjoy reading your favorite books with extra concentration and comfort. You can also make a vintage corner in your house where you can hang some monochrome pictures of family on the wall. Put any vintage instrument like a music player on the table and place this chair alongside the table.
If you own a big home with more surface area in a bathroom, you can place this wicker cone chair in a corner, in front of your bathtub with some towels, scented candles and artificial planters on it to present vintage and organized look. But this is very superficial to say because we don’t own large living spaces like Kylie Jenner and has small or normal sized bathrooms.
To add more style, you can place printed square-shaped cushions or can place a fur cloth on this chair. It is preferred that you place vibrant colored cushions on it to enhance the look of the chair.
Ebony Wicker Egg Chair Placement in small living room
This is just another design of a wicker chair that will catch your eyes. The sitting portion of the chair is of black color and is made up of rattan material weaved in wicker style in a round shape. The back is a little long and is bent backward to give you extra support and comfort. The legs of the chair are made up of wood and extend outwards. The overall appearance of the chair is attractive and elegant.
This chair is perfect to be placed in a pair of two with a wicker table in the center. You can place them in your living room in front of light-colored chiffon/net curtains. The other option for placing this chair is to place it as a single chair in front of a vibrant-colored wall such as yellow, sky blue, turquoise etc. with a wooden floor lamp on the side. You can also place this type of chairs in your office or in waiting areas of beauty salons and nail bars.
If you can’t find the same, you might find a nearly similar variant of it easily in various stores or online.

Peacock Inspired Wicker Chair
The bird peacock also called as peafowl, is of high importance in Asian culture. The Greeks learned of the peacock only after Alexander the Great’s conquest – Aristotle called it a Persian bird. It has beautiful blue-eyed feathers tail which, in Indian culture, symbolizes wealth and prosperity. In decorative art, it symbolizes dignity and beauty. Before the invention of writing pens, peacock feathers were used for writing purposes. In Asian crafts, you will frequently find peacock inspired crafts.
Since rattan wicker furniture has a strong association with Asian countries, you will find peacock inspired variants in it as well. The peacock chair started as a photography prop before becoming a symbol of a movement. The peacock chair has taken its seat in history, supporting not only the backsides of the rich and famous but also playing a key part in the Black Panther movement. The intricate design is one that has made its way in and out of fashion throughout the ages.
To give your home a cultural yet modish look, this natural colored, peacock-inspired wicker chair/sofa is the perfect fit. It is totally made up of rattan material with a seat of wicker weaving and is thus very light weight to move around. The multiple legs of the chair not only give it extra support but also enhances its beauty.
You can place it indoor, in your TV lounge in front of a plain white wall, or near your green house with a green background. To enhance the look, place either one or three differently printed but similar colored cushions on it. Also, if you are not going to use it much for sitting purposes, you can place small artificial planters in the corner of its sitting area for decoration.

You can buy these peacock chairs on etsy or amazon.
1950s Mid Century Modern Wicker Chair
Mid-century style takes us back to a time of renewal as post-war America suburbanized, although its era covers pre-world war II through the 1960s. If you’re looking to add a smidge of the space age to your space, consider starting with basic accent pieces. This two-seater sofa made up of classic wood-colored rattan weaved in wicker style can be right at home in the living room or bedroom next to your clear glass window.
Its kidney bean-shaped seat with curvy armrests and mid-length arch-shaped back gives it a unique royal look. The bottom of this chair is also made up of rattan strands twisted in V-shape to present a modish look.
To make the seat more comfortable, add soft but thin cushions on the seats and thick pillows, embellished with thread tassels, on the back.
Since it is completely made up wicker, it would demand some extra care. I would suggest you not to put it in front of the window where sunlight falls directly. Also make sure, when buying, that the bottom has rubber pads so that the material couldn’t directly get in contact with the floor.
You can buy this mid-century wicker chair from chairish.com. It is listed as $1750 at the moment.
Southport patio egg wicker chair
The Southport patio egg chair is a fun and unique addition to any outdoor or indoor living space. Large circular-shaped with metal legs and visually interesting enough to stand on its own, it can also still fit into a larger arrangement with ease. This wicker egg chair with cushions supports you from every angle, making it the perfect place to curl up with a good book or podcast.
Combined with warm textiles, natural wood, and bright vibrant or plain white walls, the Egg wicker chair can help your room combine farmhouse and shabby-chic styles.

You can buy this Southport patio egg wicker chair on Amazon by clicking here.
Hanging Wicker Chair
Treat yourself to a time out in a hanging chair. A hanging wicker chair is surely a showstopper and is all you need to spend your leisure time on while reading a book or chilling casually. A hanging wicker chair is usually completely made up of rattan material and is round with no pointed edges. The weaving style is often different which lets you choose your favorite design from a wide range. Due to the variance of craftsmanship going into each chair, every piece has individualism and uniqueness in some of the pattern detailing.
The most common and easily available pattern of a hanging wicker chair is reminiscent of tree branches intersecting each other creating small squares throughout. The borders are curvy, and the core frame is standard to ensure consistency in shape and comfort. The sitting portion of the chair is a little deeper on the inside to give you a cozy cocoon-like feel. It will embrace your body with its nest-like form.
These chairs usually come with big tufted cushions that fit on the seats but if they don’t, then you can place several printed pillows and cushions on it in order to make it comfortable.
A hanging chair for couples
If you are a couple who loves to cuddle on cold cozy evenings, then this iconic double seater hanging wicker chair can be your new favorite place to embrace each other’s presence. It is usually oval and offers enough surface area for two people to sit and relax. The cavernous sitting area of the chair lets you and your partner sink back thus creating a cradling effect.
As found on Alibaba
Another design of a hanging wicker chair is this more basic seat-like design. It is less relaxing than the previous two mentioned but looks very chic when hung anywhere in your house specifically where natural sunlight strikes more. This basic brown colored chair hung with a natural-colored rope gives a boho-chic look.
This is a flower pattern cushion on a couple’s wicker chair. As seen on yoycart
Wicker hanging chair with stand
If you want to buy them mainly for outdoor purposes, then I would suggest the one that is made up of luxurious synthetic rattan fiber. It doesn’t get ruined by rain or sunlight. Woven texture, gentle curves, and organic appeal enhance the modern look of this outdoor swing. Its egg shape makes it an eye-catching addition by the pool or on the lawn. Its all-weather cushion wears a machine-washable cover that’s both water and fade resistant granting lasting comfort. Because it is made up of synthetic rattan, it comes into different colors like black, white, red other than the natural rattan color.

You can buy this Southport patio egg wicker chair on Amazon by clicking here.
Where to place wicker hanging chair?
They are ideal for outside use and look gorgeous on a deck, patio, hanging with a rope from a branch of a tree. You can also hang them from the ceiling of your TV lounge with a heavy-duty chain to bring the summer swing feeling inside the house.
Except for hanging it with the ceiling, you can buy a wicker hanging chair with stand (either 1 stand or 2 stands) for giving extra stability and adjustable spring kit. The benefit of this stand is that when it’s sunny you can bring your chair to the poolside or garden; if it’s warm but rainy, take it to your porch, and if it’s cold and snowy outside, just bring it in and enjoy your comfy hanging chair in the warmth of your living room or bedroom.
You can also hang single person chairs in a pair of two in your terrace or in your sitting lounge with a rattan made wicker table in the center having a nice vintage table mats on it.

Round wicker dining chairs placement
Wicker and rattan dining chairs are ideal for a classic country look, bringing back the warmth and elegance of the past, but they also have enough contemporary flair to perfectly fit modern interior designs. And if you get a little bored with their natural look, you can easily give them a color makeover and use them as accent chairs.
I strongly prefer indoor and outdoor vintage setting, so this collection of wicker rattan chairs couldn’t be passed up by me. If you also like wicker furniture, then this set of dining chairs may prove to be a special proposition for you. Classic wicker weave design with arched backs and slightly sloping arms, carefully profiled back thus providing support for the spine and completed with soft, tufted seat cushions of your favorite color is a must-have.
You can place these chairs in a set of six or eight around a simple rectangle-shaped wooden dining table either in the kitchen, TV lounge, terrace or in the backyard of your house.
Event decor with wicker furniture
Celebrating small events like engagement ceremonies, bridal shower or birthday parties at home not only proves to be budget-friendly but also gives you more nostalgic moments. Adding a bit of small elements like flowers or fairly lights can give you a photo-perfect and chic décor.
If you’re searching for a way to bring earthy touches to your engagement décor, you need to look for materials made from natural sources. If you were planning a rustic event, you might lean towards unfinished, oaky woods, but if you’re preparing for a bohemian-inspired affair, all you want is to bookmark rattan goods. For example; these two peacock chairs, placed in front of a rattan room divider with a string of flowers hanging over the divider is a perfect place for you and your better half to exchange the rings at. It is also creating the perfect backdrop for your special day portraits.
Moreover, for creating DIY photobooths on your bridal shower, you can also decorate your hanging wicker chair with multiple strings of artificial flowers that match your dress code and battery-operated fairy lights.
As seen on phillymag: beautiful decor for a wedding by using peacock wicker chair. Nice photo-shoot with wicker furniture.
Where to buy round wicker chair and its cushion?
If you are living in Asia, then you can easily buy these wicker chairs from nearby shops. In some parts of Asian countries, there are big markets which has multiple shops of wicker furniture. They not only have a wide variety of ready-made wicker chairs but also offer you a made-to-order option so that you can get your desired design and shape.
In the USA, you can buy these from order one from Amazon.com because there are not so many shops which offer you your desired design. While in UK, and Europe, you can buy these from your nearby IKEA store but again, they do not offer multiple variants. So, Amazon.com is the best option to buy these chairs at a reasonable price with the assurance of good quality products.

How to take care of rattan made products
Every masterpiece demands some extra care that helps it to last longer than expected. The same is the case with rattan made products. Whether you choose to display your rattan indoors or outdoors, you need to learn a few important caring tips. Here are some methods that you can follow to take care of the product:
Clean the surface regularly. A monthly or even weekly cleaning is the best way to protect your rattan furniture and prevent major damage.
Use your vacuum’s brush attachment on woven panels and furniture crevices. A dry brush with a medium bristle can also be used for cleaning by hand.
Use detergent and a cloth to scrub out stains as soon as they occur. For more serious damage like cracking or splitting of the wood, try boiled linseed oil to put moisture back into the material.
Do NOT drag wicker chairs around whose bottoms are also made up of fiber. Doing so will result in the splitting of fibers.
Use felt pads or rubber stoppers to protect the feet of cane and rattan furniture.
Natural plant fibers require a certain level of humidity. Keep furniture away from areas of severe heat as this can warp or dry out the furniture.
Rattan fibers can fade in strong light. This is a natural process and not necessarily bad. However, if possible, rotate furniture on a regular basis to evenly distribute the fading.
Treat the rattan or cane with boiled linseed oil and raise the humidity level of the space if any splitting occurs due to dryness.

There’s regular camping gear that we take on every camping trip… tent, table, stove, sleeping gear, etc. Then there’s a whole host of extraordinarily peculiar gear that can arguably enhance your camping experience.
Some of these things are pretty nifty. Others will lure you with bizarre advertising that you’ll find hard to look away from only to leave you feeling unsettled and questioning what on earth it was you just watched!
Not surprisingly, a lot of these items are no longer available, but there are always new weird and wonderful bits of gear hitting the market all the time.
So without further ado, here are the 5 outlandish and offbeat bits of camping gear that we’ve found so far on the web.
5. The Bumper Dumper
You’d want to make sure you are on a quiet road when you stop to use the Bumper Dumper. This portable toilet seat and bucket fits into your tow hitch so you can sit down at the back of your car for a roadside dump. Maybe not as private as an old fallen log (pardon the pun) but far more comfortable.
I’m not sure where you put the bucket once you’ve filled it, the roof rack is probably the best option. Just make sure your buddy is finished before you drive away, and beware of the hot exhaust.
4. A whole host of weird sleeping bags
Kids worried about sleeping in the outdoors? Help them get to sleep in the dark by handing them a giant shark and telling them to climb right on into its mouth! Kids scared of sharks? That’s ok because there’s a grizzly bear option too!
Imagine how excited medical students would be with the anatomical sleeping bag, and nothing says “don’t worry, we’re all in this together” more than a fellow camper in a cadaver bag.
3. Leatherman Tread Multi Tools
Can we call this a man bangle? The Leatherman Tread is more of a fashion statement than a multi-tool. It’s one of those bits of gear that you buy someone who already has everything plus it’s the only multi-tool we know of that is allowed through airport security.
That being said, you’d be best checking with your airline before an airport security officer decides your wrist bling would look better on them.
. Field Candy Patterned Tents
These guys are taking personalised camping to the next level. Traditional ‘A-frame’ tents that let you blend in or stand out as much as you want, some designs may even make your fellow campers feel somewhat uneasy. From sheep to an English pub, watermelons, books and even Iron Maiden, there’s a design to suit every personality.
1. Victorinox Swiss Champ XAVT
Victorinox is really just showing off here. 8 functions in an inconveniently large 65mm wide package, this Swiss Army pocket knife is better suited to the display cabinet than your camping kit… Victorinox does mention this though.
0. Offroad Segway
If hiking isn’t your thing then why not tear up the walking tracks and mow down the wildlife with an off-road segway. These will set you back a pretty penny but at least you won’t be burning all those hard-earned calories on the way to your destination. Oh, and you’re going to need a powered site.
19. Super Kimbos – keep your pants on, even when you go to the toilet!
I don’t have any words for this.
youtube
18. Nite Ops Stubby Cooler… with LED light
You probably wouldn’t buy one of these for yourself, but you wouldn’t complain if this was in your Kris Kringle gift. Made with ABS plastic (think Lego) and equipped with an LED light, you’ve now got an excuse for taking your bevvie for a long post-campfire-curry-dinner long-drop sitting.
17. Inflatable Lounge Chairs
Initially, I thought these were ridiculous. Then thoughts of relaxing around the campsite on a 4 seater inflatable lounge chair entered my mind and before I knew it I was reaching for the credit card. These would look more at home in your lounge room than in the campsite, and with one, two and four-seater options you can seat the whole family and some wildlife.
Just for the record, I got over my excitement pretty quickly and didn’t actually buy one of these lounge chairs, however, an inflatable lounge could also be fun for floating down a creek in after some rainy weather, don’t you think?
16. ManCan Portable Beer Keg
How necessary these are for camping could be debated for a lifetime, but the one thing that any beer loving camper would agree on is that these are pretty cool. A single wall keg that you can keep in your portable car fridge ready for a cold beer on tap in the campsite. You can also get a limited edition WoManCan, which a portion of the proceeds will go to supporting women in the brewing industry.
Their claims of being lightweight are a stretch for hikers but a homebrew enthusiast on a car based camping trip would love this.
15. TrailKeg
Once again, a little heavy for hiking but…this portable beer keg is vacuum insulated and will keep your beer cold for up to 4 hours. So, theoretically, if you were to do away with 5kg of other gear in your rucksack, you could take cold beer on tap just about anywhere. You’d consider it… right?
14. Powdered Beer
If you really can’t justify the weight of a ManCan or TrailKeg in your trekking pack, then maybe powdered beer is more your thing. As a beer lover myself I’d rather drink muddy water filtered through my socks than a glass of powdered beer, but I’ve never tried it, so who am I to judge? The fact that it doesn’t seem to be available any more may be a good indication of flavour though.
13. The DryFlush Toilet
Are you concerned about the environmental impact of using water, chemicals and dedicated dump points for your portable toilet waste? Not to worry, now you can vacuum wrap your crap in foil and bank it all in a giant plastic bag! Then you get to pay a visit to every landfill site on your trip to get rid of it all! Seems like an environmentally friendly solution to me…not!
youtube
1. Fry an egg with the Flash Torch
Keep out of reach of children! This torch won’t just light your path to the dunny, it will also start a fire and fry an egg, all with the power of its ‘laser beam’ [insert Dr Evil voiceover]. Sounds more like a lightsabre to me and a sure fire way to burn holes in your tent, administer third-degree burns to wildlife and fry the retinas of your camping buddies. It’s 100% legally guaranteed under US law though, so it must be safe!
11. GSI Ultralight Table
We actually sell this one at Snowys. Our initial thoughts were that it is gimmicky and expensive and wouldn’t be overly popular… we were wrong! It seems that this 30cm long table is sought after, most likely by gourmet trail chefs. All in all, it’s a pretty cool bit of kit, just very expensive for a small amount of benchtop.
10. BBQ Fishing Rod
Snow Peak makes a whole host of gimmicky yet surprisingly functional gear for the outdoors lifestyle and the BBQ Rod is by no means an exception. Attach your marshmallows, sausages, fish or veggies to the hook and dangle them over the fire, then with a small flick of the wrist your food flips for even cooking. Pretty cool!
9. Titanium Straw
The Snow Peak Titanium straw is the strongest and most durable reusable straw in the world. Able to pierce coconuts with a single blow and rest stylishly in any cocktail. Doubles as a miniature blow dart pipe for lightweight hunting adventures.
This is quite a timely placement given the talk of the environmental impact disposable straws are having, unfortunately, it’s not available in Australia as yet.
8. Candwich – Canned Sandwiches
If I had to pull some positives from this, it would be their marketing. However, apart from fleeting glimpses of these sandwiches flying out of their respective cans and across the dance floor into the mouths of hungry disco dancers, there’s no image of the actual product. Most likely because they have the plate appeal of a budget airline meal. I’m not sure why you would take a canned sandwich to a dance club but given they stay ‘fresh’ for over a year they are probably handy for camping… I think I’ll stick to baked beans myself though.
Alternatively, there are canned cheeseburgers from the same people that brought you the powdered beer. Strangely enough, these don’t seem to be available any more.
youtube
Video by Candwich
7. GSI Collapsible Whisk
Without any context, it’s hard to work out what this peculiar little device is and a poll of random guesses to its use may return some less than desirable guesses given its whip-like appearance. But, when GSI designed it they had a portable whisk in mind.
If scrambled eggs, omelettes and pancakes are a regular on your camping menu then this may be a useful item in your kit.
6. iGuaneye Footwear
The concept makes sense, inspired by the Amazonian Indians who dipped their feet in natural latex for protection. While the latex stuck to the Amazonians feet like glue, these shoes rely on your big toe and some rubber around the heel to keep the shoe in place.
Personally, I’ve never seen a problem with flip-flops, but these do look interesting. iGuaneye looks like a relatively new brand, not something we’ve seen on any shelves in Australia just yet.

5. Hydro Hammock Bath Tub
If you’ve packed everything, including the kitchen sink, and still got a 4× foot void in your boot, you can take the bathtub too thanks to the Hydro Hammock. This battery powered gas heated insulated hammock is designed to be filled with water to create a remote hydro spa. Simply hang it between two rock solid and level anchor points, or dig an enormous hole to lay it in. Then add about 180 litres of water and make sure you’ve got a flood management plan in place when you empty it.
The Hydro Hammock can be used in the wilderness, the beach or wherever you can feasibly carry a 30 kg case and 180 kg of water. The images even suggest you use it as an outdoor bath on your suburban balcony!

4. Campfire Defender Blanket
I’m not sure I could sleep at night knowing my campfire is smouldering away under a massive blanket not too far from my tent. There are a small number of online reviews supporting my concerns, inversely then there’s a lot of positive feedback.
The idea is that instead of extinguishing your fire when you hit the hay, just peg this woven glass fire blanket over your fire. This allows the fire to keep burning whilst containing embers which means you’ll have hot coals in the morning.
Personally, I feel like it takes the responsibility out of making sure your fire is adequately extinguished. It also seems like it would be a dirty smoky item to be hauling around in your vehicle.

3. Glow in the Dark Toilet Paper
Other than being able to locate the toilet paper in bush dunny completely void of light, or maybe so you can see the roll that you just dropped in the long drop, I’m pretty confident in saying that the

. GSI Vortex Blender
This blender does not require electricity, so you don’t have to go without your protein shake, daiquiris and margaritas at the campsite. What you will need though, is a strong arm, a camp table strong enough to clamp the blender onto, and a couple of camping buddies to hold everything steady as you thrash away at the crank handle in an effort to turn the contents of the blender into a liquid.
The best thing is that you get an upper body workout while you produce the vitamin enriched shake you’ll need for muscle recovery afterwards.

1. Squat Strap
There’s a lot that is not right here. Firstly, it looks to be a terribly uncomfortable & over engineered strap that supposedly makes bush toileting easy… provided you have quads of steel. Secondly, the marketing is akin to a B-Grade comedic horror movie.
In summary, a short-tempered man in a white suit (Tuxman) steps out from behind a tree wearing a monkey mask and stares creepily at an unsuspecting camper preparing for a in the woods. Following a sales pitch on the Squat Strap and its numerous other uses, Tuxman pulls out a graphic illustration of a naked man strapped to a tree with bricks falling from his, err… rear-end!
Assumingly once the bricks have passed, the unsuspecting camper is converted to Tuxman’s bush monkey ways and dons the white suit before honing in on another culprit who appears to be converted as he’s come prepared with a Squat Strap of his own. They then all join hands (Tuxman now in a robe!) in a show of united appreciation for the Squat Strap!
These don’t look to be available any more, maybe the budget for the commercial could have been spent better on other areas of marketing?

Best Backyard Ever? Landscape Guru Jamie Durie Selling L.A. Masterpiece
Brendon Thorne/Getty Images for TAG Heuer
You’d expect world-renowned landscape designer and HGTV expert Jamie Durie to have a drop-dead gorgeous outdoor space at his own home. And the amazing outdoor spaces at his SoCal residence surrounding do not disappoint.
It’s a shortcut for a savvy buyer—rather than hiring Durie to redesign your yard, you can just buy his midcentury modern home in L.A.’s Laurel Canyon. He’s recently put his three-bedroom, two-bath post-and-beam home on the market for $2,875,000.
The host of HGTV’s “The Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie” bought the 2,676-square foot home in 2009 for $950,000. He then set about expertly renovating and remodeling it, while preserving its mid-mod features. As a result, the unique design elements created by architects Matlin & Chapman back in 1957 are still in place and readily visible.
You’ll see the period detail in the home’s floor-to-ceiling glass windows, white rock accents, a wide-open floor plan, and period lighting.

But the backyard is the star attraction. There is easy access to the outdoor space from almost every room in the house. One look at the expert landscaping will explain why an owner would never want to be too far removed from the backyard.
Extremely private, it’s a secluded tropical paradise in the middle of SoCal. The inviting pool features gorgeous glass tile all around, and there are numerous raised wooden decks and a covered outdoor dining pavilion with an adjacent outdoor kitchen.

Final Stop and Broome
After spending a couple days in Karijini it was time to head back to the coast over to Broome. It was so long of a trip that we had to stop on the way and we stayed in a hostel. We had been driving through the desert for hours and we pulled off onto the small gravel road…about a half mile away from the main road we pulled up onto a green grass field with a bunch of small little trailer looking houses. After sleeping in a tent for five nights this place was paradise. Beds with sheets, and the best part, air-conditioning!! Each room had two beds but I was luck enough to get my own for the night due to an odd number of people. We arrived around 3 PM so we had some time to spare. It kind of reminded me of a small little village but the only people that lived in the house were people who were staying the night or possibly living in the mine sites around the area. I went straight for the pool since I had been sweating on the bus and I found myself playing Marco Polo with a bunch of little kids who were probably ages 10 to 15. All of the girls were laying out on the chairs but once again I got very bored doing that so I asked the kiddos if they wanted to play. This night was our final dinner together and we ate steak, fish, rice and chicken with lots of vegetables, and finished it off with a beautiful cheesecake. It was an absolute beautiful night until… we were all doing dishes in a tiny little kitchen after dinner and we found ourselves starting to whip each other with towels, you know when you snap it like on someone? Well we were just being playful and having some fun, but of course me being the dumb kid that I am still I didn’t know how good I was at whipping a towel. I ended up hitting a girl from the UK on the knuckle, and when it hit it sounded like a gunshot or a piece of wood snapping really fast. I thought to myself oh crap, as she said Oww that hurt and then looked at her finger.. about 30 seconds later her ring finger knuckle swelled up and it looks like there was a tiny grape sitting under the skin on her knuckle. It was instantly blue and she looked right at it and said I think I’m going to get sick. She sat down on the couch and started sweating, and so did I. Here we were on the last night of the trip, A beautiful dinner, and then I do this to her? Really Aric? I am so thankful that after about five minutes the swelling went immediately down and she started feeling better after putting ice on it. I felt absolutely terrible and I was sitting by her side because I thought I broke this girls finger on the last day of the trip, what a finish. We ended the night by listening to music and talking until we had to go to bed because it was another early morning to hop on the bus to get to our final destination.
We arrived to Broome The next day and made a quick stop at two beaches before departing from each other and heading off to whichever hostel we had booked for the night in town. At this moment it was my final goodbye to some of the people I have met on the trip. In this blog I haven’t really talked about the relationships I made with people on this trip. All I have to say is I felt like we were a giant family by the end. I am really going to miss some of the people who I met on this trip. If you think about it I spent 10 days all day and all night with these people, so I got to know them pretty well. For the rest of us, we went out to dinner and went to a pub the first night in Broome. It was a nice meal and it was nice to spend even more time with the people I knew I would soon not see it again for a long time. Every night I spent in Broome I went to the beach with my friends and watched probably the most beautiful sunset over the water I have ever seen.
At this point it is Friday morning in my flight was booked for Sunday evening so I have the rest of the weekend to do whatever I wanted, but all I wanted to do was hang out with the friends I had met on the trip. I was staying in a different hostel then most of the people so we decided to meet up on the beach Friday morning. I would say I got really close with the three girls from the United Kingdom and the two German girls, because we were all about the same age and we had spent a lot of time together on the trip. These were the people I spent the final weekend with In Broome. That Friday morning we decided to walk down to a spot on the beach where you are supposed to be able to see dinosaur prints in the rocks. Well I didn’t realize how long of a trip it was and neither did the girls, we ended up walking 8 km to the spot we were trying to go to which took us two hours. At this point we were dehydrated and looking like crap and feeling like crap from the heat. We decided we wanted to check out town so we started heading that way. About halfway through we were all exhausted from the heat so I tried calling a taxi. They wouldn’t pick us up if we weren’t on a street corner so we walked another hour until we found a taxi that would pick us up. We then ate lunch together at a brewery and headed back to the hostel where the girls made a very delicious chicken curry. We ate dinner together and hung out for a while before all going to bed, Holly, one of the girls from the UK was leaving the next morning so we had brunch and said our goodbyes. :/
That night me, Daniel from Switzerland, and the girls went out to dinner and then saw a movie at an outdoor movie theater. It was very cool similar to a drive-in movie theater however they had a bunch of seats already sitting out or blankets laying in the grass you could lay on to watch the movie. 🎥
The following day was just a very relaxed day where we hung out on the beach and then laid by the pool until it was time to hop on the plane. Two of the girls were on the same flight back to Perth with me. We pretty much sat at the pool from 10 AM to 5 PM and just hung out and talked. When we arrived in Perth and it was time to go I was very sad saying my final goodbyes to my friends I had just made. Telling them hopefully I will see you again one day was sad, but inspires me to get out and keep traveling so I can meet more cool people like them or see them again someday.
Finally, all I can say is I will really miss the people I met on the trip and it was probably the coolest experience I have ever had… traveling through Australia by myself turned into traveling through Australia with a family .

Have you noticed CURVES everywhere in interiors lately? From couches to armchairs, and even rounded edges on cabinetry and tables – sensual, organic silhouettes are in the spotlight, and we’re here for it!
For interior designer Lauren Li, this trend is all about breaking up symmetry, and softening hard architectural lines. ‘More than ever, we are looking for comfort’ she says. And if you want a sofa that ‘gives you a hug’, look no further than a piece with an inviting, curved form!
Lauren’s latest project in Camberwell saw the studio inject rich colour and contemporary yet classic design pieces into a formal sitting room and dining room in a large family home. Using deep blue and teal as a base palette, Lauren selected furniture in a neutral palette of cream, gloss black and tan upholstery – and seating with soft, inviting curves, to balance the formality and symmetry of the rooms.
‘Using the BOL sofa with its curved backrest creates a soft form that is really lovely, it breaks up the formality of the room’ says Lauren. ‘It’s also great because it doesn’t have loose cushions that need adjusting, so it always looks neat and inviting.’
We recently spoke to Lauren about this stunning project, and her take on the curves we’re seeing everywhere in contemporary interiors right now.
Hey Lauren! You’ve designed some beautiful homes and interiors – how would you describe your design aesthetic?
Thanks for the kind words! I’m drawn to spaces that are filled with a warm atmosphere – how the space feels is the most important thing. I love to combine gorgeous colour and texture to give a space personality, with an element of the unexpected. I lean towards European designs as a key influence; French, Italian and Scandinavian design always inspires me.
Your Camberwell project brings together stunning bold colour on the walls, and contemporary furniture in a minimal palette of cream, tan and black. Can you tell us a little about this project, what was the brief, and tell us about the finishes and furniture you’ve selected?
We are so lucky to work with the BEST clients. The brief began with selecting the main furniture pieces; the sofa, armchairs and dining chairs. The wall colour wasn’t something that the clients asked for, however the rooms come off a main hallway, and painting them a bold colour really suits the architecture of the house and gives them such a distinct atmosphere. These formal rooms feel special to be in.
The main furniture pieces are neutral in colour, with the artwork and wall treatment providing impactful colour. So down the track, if they wish to re-paint, the furniture will work with just about any other colour scheme.
The layout of the lounge and dining rooms are quite formal, however the family are relaxed and young. So, I listened to them, and tried to carefully bring these spaces into the present day. Painting the two adjacent rooms (the lounge and dining) in two different colours definitely required a leap of faith by the client! However, the combination of bold colour and the soft, curved edges in the furniture creates the perfect balance of formality and fun. These rooms that were rarely used are now used as the family’s ‘everyday’ dining room, as well as a backdrop to host birthdays and dinner parties.
A key feature in the sitting area is the distinctive BOL curved couch by HC28 Cosmo from DOMO. What do you love about this piece?
The lounge and dining rooms here are quite symmetrical, with straight lines. The BOL sofa with its curved backrest creates a soft form that is really lovely, it breaks up the formality of the room. The boucle fabric further enhances the softness and comfort, and it’s irresistible to touch! It’s also great because it doesn’t have loose cushions that need adjusting, so it always looks neat and inviting.
We’ve noticed a lot of curved lines in contemporary furniture right now. Square, ‘blocky’ furniture is out and softer, curved lines are in! What can you tell us about this trend?
Yes, you’d be living under a rock if you didn’t know that curved lines are having a moment right now! More than ever, we are looking for comfort. Our homes are a refuge where we want to feel safe, and a sofa that ‘gives you a hug’ as it wraps around you does just that. We are looking for furniture that looks inviting and comfortable, and curved shapes do that so well.
What advice would you have for people keen to inject some curves at home?
If a room is looking a bit flat, consider adding a curved line. It can really be the ‘thing’ that lifts the entire room.
A sofa with a curved form is a great place to start if you’re looking to add loads of softness and interest to a space, however adding some ball cushions and a nest of round coffee tables will also break up the straight lines in a room.
So if you already have your main furniture pieces, perhaps a round mirror or lamp is just the piece to break up all of those straight lines, and give the space some variety.
What’s next for Lauren Li / Sisalla Interior Design?
It sure has been an unpredictable year! We’ve had client projects stop, start and stop again and we’ve tried to go with the flow.
Alongside our design projects we launched our online courses and studio sessions in April, and they have kept us quite busy. Connecting with other interior designers has actually been just what I needed during lockdown here in Melbourne. It’s been fun, and nerdy in the best possible way to meet online every week.
Something that I have been asked about from time to time is mentoring, and we have been developing an online community called The Design Society to share information about fees, marketing, finding the best tradespeople and where to source all of the things. It’s a great way to strengthen the interior design industry by sharing information and plus, I love talking about design (if you can’t tell!).
For more than 30 years, DOMO has remained Australia’s exclusive stockist of prestigious design brands from Europe, and across the globe.
With showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Gold Coast, DOMO offers a curated collection of classic, contemporary indoor and outdoor furniture ranges that last a lifetime.

The gabled roofless conservatory is probably the first thing you notice as you approach the row of single-storey houses. Set against a white facade, it stands in stark contrast to the nondescript link houses surrounding it, and exudes an appealing freshness.
One thing noticeably missing from the front porch is the mandatory parking space, which has been purposefully relocated to the back. That space is occupied by a small garden and a partially-walled pathway, leading us towards the main door.
Once inside, there is an immediate brightness to the interiors – elusive of typical intermediate terrace houses – thanks to the two courtyards within. Rays of light filter down generously to the staircase on the right, illuminating the rectangular water feature below.
Welcome to 113 Ikon, a 2,150sq ft (200sq m) double-storey house that serves as a short-term rental property. Located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, the three-bedroom property is a project by design studio Paperspace.
Wooden pendant lights anchor the dining area.
Renovation work was completed last April – after about a year – and the space opened for business about a month after that. Owner Penny Chow first bought the house – which is at least a decade old – to rent it out.
“But I felt I couldn’t get much rental from such an old house, which had various issues. So I figured I’d renovate it, be happy with it when I look at it, and then thought why not rent it out on Airbnb.
“This was a single-storey house with a high ceiling. So what I did was build a mezzanine floor to accommodate the bedrooms and a conservatory upstairs,” says Chow, 30, who lives with her parents a few streets away in the same neighbourhood.
The steel diamond mesh-based conservatory and front garden are meant to green up the streetscape, according to the designers. The roofless conservatory features a swing and some plants, making it a great hangout place at night.
The conservatory is fitted with a swing and makes a great place to relax, especially at night.
Maximising the living space within was also one of Chow’s objectives. A room originally located downstairs was done away with to double up on the living room area. Chow also did away with the typical sliding door and installed one that opens outwards and upwards.
“I wanted to make the living space as large as possible, so this single-piece door actually opens all the way up to 90° so you can see the garden,” she explains as she pushes out the glass door that separates the living room from the outdoor garden.
“What my architect friends and I wanted was to be able to see the garden from every corner of the living area,” adds Chow. Architects Winston Zane See and his wife Amy Ang, a husband-and-wife team at Paperspace, wanted the place to be unique and did a complete makeover of the place.
Besides the eye-catching conservatory, they also designed two courtyards to introduce natural sunlight and ventilation into the house. Realising that Chow was fond of white, See and Ang worked with that theme, both inside and out.
“The black and white look really appeals to me. Then I basically added some colours with the furniture pieces,” says Chow, who trained as an orthoptist, or eye care practitioner who specialises in eye movement disorders, in Australia.
The result is a contemporary chic interior with an eclectic mix of furniture and furnishings curated by Chow, who currently works in her family business. Wooden pendant lights above the dining table anchor the dining area, while a dark green sofa bed, arm chair, rocking chair and some side tables dot the rest of the living room.
A touch of the traditional comes in the form of a dowry chest gifted to Chow by her best friend’s grandmother, as well as some Oriental drum stools.
Recently, Chow had the roof redone. She maintained the skylight there but added horizontal shades under it, which can be opened up manually. “Originally, this entire area was all polycarbonate sheet so it was very, very hot,”she says, pointing to the roof as we stood on the second floor.
Chow says what she loves best about the house is the white theme.
To further add colour to the interiors, each bathroom features a different colour theme. Parts of the wall and the sink cabinet are in either blue, pink or yellow, set against otherwise white subway wall tiles.
So what does Chow like best about the house? “I like the colours. I definitely love the fact that (the designers) have fulfilled my want and need with the whites. I think what’s great about white that people don’t realise is if you’re not happy with the white on the wall, you can just paint over it again.”
Despite the time and effort spent during renovation and furnishing the house, Chow is happy with the end result. “(The project) becomes almost like an obsession really. But there is great satisfaction in seeing how it has turned out despite all the hard work!” she ends.
Creating a liveable space
The carpark was moved to the back to free up the garden area in front. Photo: Paperspace
Architect Winston See, co-founder of design studio Paperspace, talks about the design process behind 113 Ikon.
What were your initial thoughts and plans when you were first asked to design 113 Ikon? When I was engaged to design Ikon, I pitched the idea of having a design which prioritises human lifestyle instead of possessions such as motor vehicles. Penny (Chow) was very encouraging and open to new ideas and we never looked back since.
How did the final design come about? Since the house is located very close to the corner lot and it has a 10ft (3m) wide back lane, I thought it was a good opportunity to explore a new design prototype, where the car park is now switched to the back of the house. This arrangement allows the living and dining areas (which most likely will be occupied most of the time) to have a garden view. (Inspired) by some of the old shophouse designs, we introduced not one, but two courtyards to provide lots of natural sunlight and cross ventilation.
In terms of the interior, we’re just trying to incorporate Penny as much as possible into it. Having a white space with pops of colours and textures is literally who she is; on the surface she’s a simple person, down-to-earth, and kind of minimalist. But she’s incredibly bubbly and outgoing at the same time, always smiling and laughing beneath the calm exterior.
Which was the most difficult aspect of the design and/or renovation and why? I would say the most difficult part of the design/renovation was the budget management. Having a very, very old house and trying to completely change the configuration of the house is an expensive thing to do. However with many compromises and endurance, I’m proud to say that we’ve done the best we can with what we’ve got and have absolutely no regrets.
What kind of feelings do you hope to evoke in people who stay at Ikon? I’d like the people to experience the essence of tropical living in a modern context. A lot of people prioritise floor area and are always looking to maximise the built-up but I dare say that size does not matter. It’s all about balance between outdoors and indoors, and hopefully merging them together to create a very liveable and sustainable environment in our hot and humid climate.

There are a few luxe upgrades in the midst of this rockin’ retro home. It now features stainless steel appliances in the kitchen and a sumptuous, sunken teak tub in the master bath.

Durie has also added a fire pit area with built-in seating, hanging basket chairs, lushly landscaped lounging platforms, and giant, gorgeous custom iron-basket planters.

And in what might be the best work-from-home scenario we’ve ever seen, there’s a divine studio Durie added out back.
Completely detached from the rest of the home, the studio has living walls, adding pops of green to the outside. On the inside, honey-colored wood-paneled work spaces will spark inspiration.

The entire property is fenced and gated for privacy, but the security measures are also aesthetically pleasing—the wooden gates themselves are works of art, and the planter bedecked fences are quite lovely.
