Breaking Down Medical Voice Recognition Software: How It Revolutionizes Healthcare
Tumblr media
Medical voice recognition software is a game-changing technology transforming how healthcare providers document patient encounters and medical records. This software streamlines the documentation process by enabling healthcare providers to dictate their notes and has them transcribed into text, allowing for more efficient and accurate patient care. This article will delve into how medical voice recognition software works and its benefits and limitations.
How Does Medical Voice Recognition Software Work?
Medical voice recognition software works by converting spoken words into written text. The software uses advanced algorithms to analyze and interpret the audio input, accurately transcribing the text in real time. The software can recognize medical terminology and phrases, ensuring accurate and detailed documentation.
To begin using medical voice recognition software, healthcare providers must choose a program that best suits their needs. The software can be installed on a computer or mobile device and requires a microphone or headset for audio input. Once the software is installed, the provider can begin speaking into the microphone, and the software will start transcribing the audio into text.
The software combines natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to convert audio input into written text. NLP technology analyzes spoken language, breaking down words and phrases into their components, such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Machine learning algorithms then use this information to recognize patterns and predict future input. As the healthcare provider continues to use the software, it learns their specific speech patterns, adapting to their style and preferences. This makes the software more accurate over time, making the documentation process even more efficient and streamlined.Medical voice recognition software is a powerful tool revolutionizing the healthcare industry. By automating the documentation process and reducing the risk of errors and omissions, this technology improves patient care and allows healthcare providers to focus on what matters most: their patients.
Benefits Of Using Medical Voice Recognition Software In Healthcare
Medical voice recognition software has become increasingly popular in healthcare due to its many benefits. The following are some benefits of using this technology:
Improved Efficiency: Medical voice recognition software allows healthcare providers to document patient encounters more quickly and accurately. This improves workflow efficiency and will enable providers to spend more time with their patients.
Increased Accuracy: The software is designed to recognize medical terminology and phrases, ensuring the transcribed text is accurate and detailed. This reduces the risk of errors and omissions, improving patient safety and care.
Cost Savings: By automating the documentation process, medical voice recognition software can reduce administrative costs associated with manual transcription and data entry. This can result in significant cost savings for healthcare organizations.
Improved Accessibility: Medical voice recognition software allows healthcare providers to document patient encounters from anywhere with an internet connection. This improves accessibility and enables providers to quickly access patient records, even when not in the office.
Increased Patient Satisfaction: By reducing the time it takes to document patient encounters, medical voice recognition software allows providers to spend more time with their patients. This can result in increased patient satisfaction and improved patient outcomes.
Customization: Medical voice recognition software can be customized to meet the unique needs of healthcare providers and organizations. Providers can create templates and macros to streamline the documentation process, making it even more efficient.
Integration with Electronic Health Records (EHRs): Medical voice recognition software can be integrated with EHRs, allowing for seamless and accurate documentation of patient encounters. This reduces the risk of errors and omissions and ensures that patient records are complete and up-to-date.In conclusion, medical voice recognition software is an important technology that benefits healthcare providers and organizations. By improving efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility, this software is helping to transform the way healthcare is delivered and improving patient care.

Challenges and Limitations of Medical Voice Recognition Software
While medical voice recognition software offers many benefits to healthcare providers and organizations, this technology has some challenges and limitations. Here are some of the most common challenges and limitations:
Recognition Errors: Medical voice recognition software can struggle to recognize certain accents, dialects, and speech patterns accurately. This can lead to recognition errors, resulting in inaccurate or incomplete documentation.
Ambient Noise: Background noise and other sounds in the environment can interfere with the accuracy of medical voice recognition software. This can be particularly challenging in busy healthcare settings, where there may be a lot of noise and distractions.
Technical Issues: Like any software, medical voice recognition software can experience technical issues, such as software crashes or compatibility problems with other programs. This can disrupt the documentation process and create additional work for healthcare providers.
Cost: While medical voice recognition software can provide cost savings in the long run, there can be significant upfront costs associated with purchasing and implementing the software. This can be a barrier for smaller healthcare organizations or those with limited budgets.
Learning Curve: Medical voice recognition software requires some initial training and can have a learning curve for providers who are not familiar with the technology. This can slow the documentation process until providers become comfortable with the software.
Privacy and Security Concerns: Like any technology involving sensitive information storage and transmission, medical voice recognition software raises privacy and security concerns. Healthcare providers must use secure and compliant software that meets regulatory requirements.
In conclusion, while medical voice recognition software offers many benefits to healthcare providers and organizations, it also presents challenges and limitations. Healthcare providers must carefully consider these factors when choosing and implementing this technology and work to mitigate any potential issues to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

Conclusion
Furthermore, s10.ai is one of the most advanced and reliable medical voice recognition software available today. It offers a range of benefits that can further enhance the efficiency and accuracy of medical documentation. For example, s10.ai uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing to recognize medical terminology accurately, even in complex medical cases. It can also adapt to individual provider speech patterns and dialects, making it more intuitive and easier to use. Additionally, s10.ai can help healthcare providers save time by automating the process of documentation, reducing the need for manual transcription, and improving workflow. Overall, s10.ai is a powerful and innovative tool that can greatly benefit healthcare providers and organizations seeking to optimize their documentation processes and improve patient care.

Apple WWDC 2021, Everything Announced: iOS 15, MacOS Monterey, Watch OS 8, and a whole bag of privacy updates
Tumblr media
We are all hearing of several podcasts, updates and key features following Apple’s WWDC 2021. As a result, the users are losing their minds getting worked up over the changes they have not used yet. The new features have us all hyped about the changes we will witness and experience in the coming weeks. Apple has poured down a torrent of changes, security features, customizations, OS updates and whatnot!
With feature-rich content, let’s go eye in the sky and check out everything down the road!
On 7th June, as usual, the WWDC 2021 took place on Monday with a keynote address. Apple made use of this occasion to brag off a big bag of enhancements, security features, software updates, updates in tech development, and other services.
The whole Apple event emphasized all the new ways Apple applications will be able to interact with the other Apple devices, apps and a perpetual list of premium Apple services. Apple characterized itself as the app overload as all eyes (every eye) were on WWDC. Here is a list of key highlights from Monday’s event.
iOS Update
At the start of the show at WWDCs expected, iOS was the star of the show at WWDC. The operating system that powers the iPhone gets updated every fall, and on Monday, Apple gave its first look at the highly anticipated iOS enhancements coming to iOS 15.
Tumblr media
FaceTime has saved us all from isolation last year and it is a vital feature and it is getting juiced up with some enhancements. The latest version will be a little bit more zoom-ey with the grid view for group calls. On top of that, this new update would highlight the person speaking and add voice isolation features rendering remote audio conversations feel more natural.
FaceTime is getting its wingman, SharePlay. This enhancement will synchronize the streaming content inside FaceTime and allow the users to watch real-time movies or listen to music while they talk. As usual, this ultimate combo works seamlessly with content from Apple Music and Apple TV+.
On top of that, there is good news for Android and Windows users. Finally, after years, non-iPhone users can join FaceTime calls now. Apple users can easily share a FaceTime link that can be opened in web browsers on Non-Apple devices. Furthermore, the Photos app is getting enhancements that use computer vision technology to recognize and effectively read the text within images.
AirPods Expands Its Usability
Although Apple did not provide any incentives to upgrade to the already expensive AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, these noise-cancelling headphones will witness significant enhancements in the new future. But as a current improvement, these headphones will serve as low-powered hearing aids.
People with mild-hearing losses will soon be able to use a ‘conversation boost’ mode. This mode uses audio processing in combination with the beamforming microphones on the headphones. With this new feature, people will be able to hear conversations more clearly and tune out the ambient background noises.
On top of that, both the pairs of noise-cancelling headphones support spatial audio via the Dolby Atmos. On a related note, TV os will also get spatial audio in the coming future. Users will be able to watch Apple TV in full surround sound with headphones plugged in. Other than that, both the premium headphones will benefit from Apple’s system-wide enhancements to the find-my network. There is now a proximity view that lets you
know when you are getting close. This exciting option shows a notification on your iPhone if you’ve left your headphones behind.
iPad Gets Even Better
For several years, the iPad has been a beloved device in the creative community. But for the data workers who spend half their day writing emails and working on the documents, the iPad has not been a very welcoming working environment. But the WWDC 2021 announced that Apple is working to eliminate every pitfall.
Tumblr media
In the update, the iPadOS will get a multitasking menu that appears at the top of the screen. Using the small pop-up menu, users can take apps fulls creen, slide windows over to the side of the screen or create a split-view with multiple applications. With the new update, the users can now seamlessly switch between multiple apps in the split view just with a couple of swipes. These gestures will also work with keyboard shortcuts. The iPad can be a laptop replacement.
The Notes app gets more collaborative and with the ability to see the recent changes, the users can tag their colleagues in a shared document. Widgets also get updates in iPadOS and users can perform actions that make it easier to organize and manage the widgets on their home screen. Not least, the Translate app also gets juiced up with real-time spoken language translations across all the apps and web pages.
iWatch Gets Smarter, the Notes app gets more collaborative and with the ability to see the recent changes, the users can tag their colleagues in a shared document. Widgets also get updates in iPadOS and users can perform actions that make it easier to organize and manage the widgets on their home screen. Lastly, the Translate app also gets juiced up with real-time spoken language translations across all the apps and web pages.
iWatch Gets Smarter
WatchOS 8 gets the best out of the iWatch with the Breathe app. This app is quite an animation and the Reflect feature offers feel-good prompts. Your constant companion can now make you feel thankful for doping something great. The sleep-time tracking system helps you measure your respiratory rate.
Tumblr media
The enhancement, Apple’s Fitness+ service includes a Tai Chi workout to reduce stress. Users can wave goodbye to stress with the introduction of a new trainer.
Lastly, the Photos app is getting an update on the Watch. This enhancement pulls out the images of your loved ones on your Watch. You can easily scroll through your memories, features highlights and share them with your friends without touching your iPhone. Get the best communication entirely from your wrist.
Monterey On Board
The new macOS update is Monterey and is aimed at device synergy. Users will be able to synchronize the apps more easily between different Apple devices. Universal Control is a highly anticipated feature and with it, the user can set the iPad near the Mac for double monitors. The trackpad and keyboard will work seamlessly across both screens.
Tumblr media
Safari is also getting a facelift and would probably look like Chrome. Tabs will appear smaller and more compact and users will gain the ability to group the tabs together in the sidebar, maximizing the number to 250. Not only that but the tabs will also change colors to complement the visual theme of the page that is currently open.
Privacy Upgraded
Apple announced several security features for its products. One big enhancement coming to the Mail is the ability to block the tracking pixels in the emails that can expose the email activity. This feature veils your IP address from the email senders.
Privacy controls will be available to the Apple users who subscribe to the new premium version of iCloud. This new version is called iCloud+ and allows the users to complicate their location and destination in the browser.
The new update is an App Privacy Report that gives the users an overview of how often your downloaded apps are accessing other applications including camera, location, contacts, mic and other third-party apps.
Siri gets better with on-device speech recognition that lets the virtual assistant hear and execute several tasks such as setting alarms and switching to the Dark mode without you needing to send out the voice commands.
Lastly, the Wallet app will allow the users to store more sensitive cards.
tvOS 15 & HomeKit Updates
HomeKit and tvOS updates are two separate software platforms. These are more geared towards home. These new features can be fully deployed by smart home manufacturers as the voice assistant on their smart devices.
Users can also use Apple’s Home app on your Apple Watch as an intercom communication interface. This improves comfort and allows the users to unlock the door to the smart house. On the entertainment side, Apple’s HomePod Mini can be used as a part of a stereo setup if you are watching video content on Apple TV through a 4k box. Siri can pull up TV Shows and movies using HomePod Mini.
The spatial audio feature discussed above works well in this case too. The new SharePlay feature enables simultaneous video watching on multiple devices. In the case of FaceTime, the initial call takes place through FaceTime video but the ‘watch party’ happens through Apple TV.
Tech Enhancements For The Developer Community
As usual, Apple launched a plethora of features not just for its users, but also for the developers. Let’s witness the environment from a developer’s eye.
Swift
Updating Apps to Use Swift Concurrency: Swift also received a few updates. The developers can improve the application performance by refactoring the code. This can be advantageous for the asynchronous functions in Swift.
Concurrent Development:Developers can perform parallel development operations.
SwiftUI
Mac App Development With SwiftUI: With the updates in the language, developers can easily develop engaging and pixel-perfect Mac apps using SwiftUI. This new update brings along a variety of UI elements including toolbars, sidebars and tables and other easy-to-incorporate elements.
Breathe Pixel-Perfect Graphics Into Your Applications: Make the most out of the SwiftUI and add breathtaking background materials, customize graphics, animations, and vibrancy.
Xcode Cloud
Xcode helps the developer to configure the project to use Xcode CLoud. It makes it easy to refine your CI/CD. The IDE, Xcode also received tons of enhancements. Here is a glimpse!
Xcode Cloud For Data Encryption: This feature allows the developers to automatically build and test the applications with Xcode to verify the changes and create high-end applications.
CI/CD With Xcode Cloud: Xcode Cloud allows the developers to build apps and run automated tests in parallel. All this directly from the Xcode Cloud environment.
Review Your Xcode Cloud Workflows: Workflows are the configurations of Xcode Cloud to perform development operations. that defines when Xcode Cloud runs a workflow.
Xcode and macOS versions of the temporary build environment: You can configure several actions for a workflow. Developers can perform four different operations: build, analyze, test, and archive.
Great Time To Talk Business
With the WWDC 2021 creating a super buzz in the market, it is time to talk business. With Apple’s legacy going perpetual, businesses are strengthening their pillars with iOS development. iOS app development services are available in the marketplace, but getting the best tech development partner is not an easy job. On top of that, upskilling your employees is a time-consuming process.

Facebook launches Portal TV, a $149 video chat set-top box
Facebook wants to take over your television with a clip-on camera for video calling, AR gaming, and content co-watching. If you can get past the creepiness, the new Portal TV lets you hang out with friends on your home’s biggest screen. It’s a fresh product category that could give the social network a unique foothold in the living room where unlike on phones where it’s beholden to Apple and Google, Facebook owns the hardware and operating system.
Today Facebook unveiled a new line of Portal devices that bring its auto-zooming AI camera, in-house voice assistant speaker, Alexa, apps like Spotify and newly added  Amazon Prime Video, Messenger video chat, and now end-to-end encrypted WhatsApp video calls to smaller smart screen form factors.
youtube
The $149 Portal TV is the star of the show, turning most televisions with an HDMI connection into a video chat device. And if you video call between two Portal TVs, you can use the new Watch Together feature to co-view Facebook Watch videos simultaneously while chilling together over picture-in-picture. The Portal TV is genius way for Facebook to make its hardware both cheaper yet more immersive by co-opting a screen you already own and have given a space in your life, thereby leapfrogging smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home.
There’s also the new pint-size 8-inch Portal Mini for just $129, which makes counter-top video chat exceedingly cheap. The 10-inch Portal that launched a year ago now has a sleeker, minimal bezel look with a price drop for $199 to $179. Both look more like digital picture frames, which they are, and can be stood on their side or end for optimal full-screen chatting. Lastly, the giant 15.6-inch Portal+ swivel screen falls to $279 instead of $349, and you still get $50 off if you buy any two Portal devices.
“The TV has been a staple of living rooms around the world, but to date it’s been primarily about people who are physically interacting with the device” Facebook’s VP of consumer hardware Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth tells me at a press event inside a San Francisco victorian house. “We see the opportunity for people to use their TVs not just to do that but also to interact with other people.”
The new Portals all go on pre-sale today from Portal.facebook.com, Amazon, and Best Buy in the US and Canada plus new markets like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, and France (though the Hey Portal assistant only works in English). Portal and Portal Mini ship October 15th and Portal TV ships November 5th.
The whole Portal gang lack essential video apps like Netflix and HBO, and Boz claims he’s not trying to compete directly with Roku, Fire TV etc. Instead, Facebook is trying to win where it’s strongest, on communication and video chat where rivals lack a scaled social network.
“You’re kind of more hanging out. It isn’t as transactional. It’s not as urgent as when you sacrifice your left arm to the cause” explains Boz. Like how Fortnite created a way for people to just chill together while gaming remotely, Portal TV could do the same for watching television together, apart.
  Battling The Creepiness
The original Portal launched a year ago to favorable reviews except for one sticking point: journalists all thought it was too sketchy to bring Facebook surveillance tech inside their homes. Whether the mainstream consumer feels the same way is still a mystery as the company has refused to share sales numbers. Though Boz told me “The engagement, the retention numbers are all really positive”, we haven’t seen developers like Netflix rush to bring their apps to the Portal platform.
To that end, privacy on Portal no longer feels clipped on like the old plastic removable camera covers. “We have to always do more work to grow the number of people who have that level of comfort, and bring that technology into their home” says Boz. “We’ve done what we can in this latest generation of products, now with integrated camera covers that are hardware, indicator lights when the microphone is off, and form factors that are less obtrusive and blend more into the background of the home.”
One major change stems from a scandal that spread across the tech sector, with Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook all being criticized for quietly sending voice clips to human reviewers to improve speech recognition in what felt like a privacy violation. “Part of the Portal out-of-box experience is going to be a splash screen on data storage and it will literally walk through how . . . when we hear ‘Hey Portal’ a voice recording and transcription is sent, it may be reviewed by humans, and people have the ability to opt out.”
Facebook will let users disable storage of Portal voice snippets
But if Portal is battling the perception of creepiness, why make human reviews the default? Boz defended the move from the perspective of accessibility. “We say ‘oh they’re good enough’ but for a lot of people that might have a mild speech impediment, a subtle accent, who might use different words because they’re from a different region, these assistants aren’t inclusive.” He claims more voice data reviewed by humans means better products for everyone, though I bet better sales for Facebook wouldn’t hurt.
Instead, Facebook is leaning on the evolution of the smart screen market in general to help its camera blend in. “The more value we can create, not just any one player but as an entire industry, that allows consumers to feel – ‘yeah, I both am comfortable with how the data is being used and why’.”
One reason Facebook is forging forward despite all the criticism about launching a “surveillance” device amidst its scandals: this is its shot to control its destiny, unlike on phones. Facebook has always been vulnerable to Apple and Google since its app lives in their app stores on their devices. “You don’t have a huge amount of influence over what the phone itself is or what the operating system provides. You’re kind of at the mercy of what those manufactures or developers provide you” Boz notes. With Portal, Facebook can ensure communication tech like cameras stay part of the smart home, even if they’re creepy now.
Hands-On With The New Portals
If you can get past Facebook’s toxic brand, the new Portals are quite pleasing. They’re remarkably polished products for a company just a year into selling consumer hardware. They all feel sturdy and elegant enough to place in your kitchen or living room.
The Portal and Portal Mini work just like last year’s models, but without the big speaker bezel, they can be flipped on their side and look much more like picture frames while running Portal’s Smart Frame showing your Facebook, Instagram, or camera roll photos.
Portal TV’s flexible form factor is a clever innovation, first spotted as “Codename: Ripley” by Jane Manchun Wong and reported by Alex Heath for Cheddar a year ago. It has an integrated stand for placing the gadget on your TV console, but that stand also squeezes onto a front wing to let it clip onto both wide and extremely thin new flatscreen televisions. With just an HDMI connection it brings a 12.5 megapixel, 120-degree camera and 8 mic array to any tube. It also ships with a stubby remote control for basic browsing without having to shout across the room.
Portal TV includes an integrated smart speaker that can be used even when the TV is off or on a different input, and offers HDMI CEC for control through other remotes. The built-in camera cover gives users peace of mind and a switch conjures a red light to signal that all sensors are disabled. Overall, control responsiveness felt a tad sluggish but passable.
Portal’s software is largely the same as before with a few key improvements, the addition of WhatsApp, and one big bonus feature for Portal TVs. The AI Smart Camera is the best part, automatically tracking multiple people to keep everyone in frame as zoomed-in as possible. Improved adaptive background modeling and human pose estimation lets it keep faces in view without facial recognition, and all video processing is done locally on the device. A sharper Spotlight feature lets you select one person, like a child running around the room, so you don’t miss the gymnastics routines.
The Portal app platform that features Spotify and Pandora is gaining Amazon’s suite of apps, starting with Prime Video while Ring doorbell and smart home controls are on the way. Beyond Messenger calls and AR Storytime where you don characters’ AR masks as you read aloud a children’s book, there are new AR games like Cats Catching Donuts With Their Mouths. Designed for kids and casual players, the games had some trouble with motion tracking and felt too thin for more than a few seconds of play. But if Facebook gave Portal TV a real controller or bought a better AR games studio, it could dive deeper into gaming as a selling point.
WhatsApp is the top new feature for all the Portals. Though you can’t use the voice assistant to call people, you can now WhatsApp video chat friends with end-to-end encryption rather than just Messenger’s encryption in transit. The two messaging apps combined give Portal a big advantage over Google and Amazon’s devices since their parents have screwed up or ignored chat over the years. Still, there’s no way to send text messages which would be exceedingly helpful.
Reserved for Portal TV-to-Portal TV Messenger chats is the new Watch Together feature we broke the news of a year ago after Ananay Arora spotted it in Messenger’s code. This lets you do a picture-in-picture video chat with friends while you simultaneously view a Facebook Watch video. It even smartly ducks down the video’s audio while friends are talking so you can share reactions. While it doesn’t work with other content apps like Prime Video, Watch Together shows the potential of Portal: passive hang out time.
“Have you ever thought about how weird bowling is, Josh? Bowling is a weird thing to go do. I enjoy bowling. I don’t enjoy bowling by myself that much. I enjoy going with other people” Boz tells me. “It’s just a pretext, it’s some  reason for us to get together and have some beers and to have time and have conversation. Whether it’s video calling or the AR games . . . those are a pre-text, to have an excuse to go be together.”
This is Portal’s true purpose. Facebook has always been about time spent, getting deeper into your life, and learning more about you. While other companies’ products might feel less creepy or be more entertaining, none have the ubiquitous social connection of Facebook and Portal. When your friends are on screen too, a mediocre game or silly video is elevated into a memorable experience. You can burn hours simply co-chilling. With Portal TV, Facebook finally has something unique enough to possibly offset its brand tax and earn it a place in your home.

Facebook wants to take over your television with a clip-on camera for video calling, AR gaming, and content co-watching. If you can get past the creepiness, the new Portal TV let you hang out with friends on your home’s biggest screen. It’s a fresh product category that could give the social network a unique foothold in the living room where unlike on phones where it’s beholden to Apple and Google, Facebook owns the hardware and operating system.
Today Facebook unveiled a new line of Portal devices that bring its auto-zooming AI camera, in-house voice assistant speaker, Alexa, apps like Spotify and newly added  Amazon Prime Video, Messenger video chat, and now end-to-end encrypted WhatsApp video calls to smaller form factors.
The $149 Portal TV is the star of the show, turning most televisions with an HDMI connection into a video chat smart screen.
“The TV has been a staple of living rooms around the world, but to date it’s been primarily about people who are physically interacting with the device” says  Facebook’s VP of consumer hardware Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth.
Instead, Facebook is trying to compete where it’s strongest, on communication and video chat where rivals lack a scaled social network.
“You’re kind of more hanging out. It isn’t as transactional. It’s not as urgent as when you sacrifice your left arm to the cause” explains Boz. At the big European tech trade show, IFA 2019, Amazon today announced over 20 new Fire TV-branded devices, including a next-generation Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Edition soundbar from Anker — its first foray into Fire TV Edition audio products — and 15 new Fire TV Edition products, including the first OLED Fire TV Edition smart TVs.
The announcement represents a significant expansion of Amazon’s Fire TV hardware line and integrations at a time when Roku has gained a lead over Amazon in the U.S., in terms of connected-TV market share, while Fire TV has been claiming the top spot in some European markets and an international lead over Roku.
The company today said its Fire TV devices now have over 37 million monthly active users globally, which is ahead of the 30.5 million Roku reported in Q2. Both companies offer products that may be used by more than one person in a household, of course, but each household only gets counted as one user (or account) as long as they’ve streamed through the platform in the past month. It’s a relatively fair comparison, in other words.
Of the new devices, the new Fire TV Cube is one of the more interesting additions to the lineup as it represents the second generation, and a big upgrade, over the existing product. The device offers a hands-free Fire TV experience, and has become the testing ground for many Fire TV software enhancements before they roll out to the wider product lineup.
The updated Fire TV Cube now includes a faster, “hexa-core” processor that’s twice as powerful as the one that shipped in the first generation device. It provides “instant access” to Dolby Vision and 4K Ultra HD content, Amazon claims, at up to 60 frames per second. The new Cube also includes on-device processing with Local Voice Control, which lets you more quickly execute some of your common voice commands like “Alexa, go home,” or “Alexa, scroll right,” for example. These commands will now execute up to 4 times faster, says Amazon.
The Fire TV Cube will also ship with far-field voice recognition capabilities with 8 microphones and technology that helps to suppress noise, reverberation, content currently playing, and even competing speech so Alexa better hears your voice commands even when the TV is on in a room full of people.
Customers will be able to control their compatible TV, soundbar, A/V receiver, cable or satellite box, as well as other smart home devices by way of the device’s support of multi-directional infrared technology, cloud-based protocols, and HDMI CEC, combined with Alexa.
“Fire TV Cube was the first hands-free streaming media player powered by Alexa, and since launching last year we have gathered a wealth of feedback from customers about how they use voice in the living room,” said Marc Whitten, Vice President of Amazon Fire TV, in a statement. “Over the past year, we have continued to expand and advance the Fire TV Cube experience based on this feedback with dozens of new features including Multi-Room Music, Follow-Up Mode, and Alexa Communications. These key learnings carried over and guided the development of the second-generation Fire TV Cube, and we are excited to introduce this new-and-improved experience to customers around the world,” he said.
The new Fire TV Cube is available for pre-order in the U.S. for $119.99, in Canada for $149.99, the United Kingdom for £109.99, Germany for €119.99, and Japan for ¥14980.  It ships on Oct. 10 in all markets except Japan, where it ships on Nov. 5, instead. And it will be sold in a package with Ring Video Doorbell 2 for $249.99 (or $69 off).
Amazon’s Fire TV Edition lineup is expanding, too. This is the licensed version of the Fire TV OS available to other manufacturers for use in their own products.
The company announced more than 15 new products from brands including Skyworth, Arcelik, TPV, Compal, and others.
In partnership with Dixons Carphone, Amazon is teaming up to launch JVC – Fire TV Edition Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR LED TVs, which are the first Fire TV Edition products in the U.K. They’ll be sold by Currys PC World and online at Amazon.co.uk and are priced at £349 and up.
With IMTRON, a company of MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group, Amazon is launching a lineup of Fire TV Edition smart TVs under the private label ok. These will be available in Germany and Austria, as will the 11 Fire TV Edition smart TVs from Grundig including the first OLED Fire TV Edition television ( available in 55” and 65” models, starting at €1,299.99 for hands-free; or starting at €1,199.99 if not; pictured below).
Other more affordable Grundig Fire TV Edition products will be sold on Amazon.de in 32″, 40″, 43″, 49″, 55″, and 65″ variations, starting at €239.99. They’ll also come to retailers including MediaMarkt, Saturn, Euronics, Expert, EP:, Medimax, and others.
In the U.S., Amazon and Best Buy announced the first 65-inch Toshiba – Fire TV Edition smart TV with Dolby Vision, which will be available for customers in the United States next month for $599.
Finally, following Roku’s lead into home audio, Amazon also announced the first expansion of Fire TV Edition beyond the TV itself with the launch of the Nebula Soundbar from Anker. (Roku also today launched its own wireless soundbar).
The new device supports 4K Ultra HD, a unified smart TV user interface, near-field Alexa voice control, Dolby Vision pass-through, and more. It can also be added to a multi-room speaker group through the Alexa app, and comes with a 90-day trial to Amazon Music Unlimited.
It’s available for pre-order today for $229.99 in the United States, $269.99 in Canada, £179.99 in the United Kingdom, and €209.99 in Germany. It will begin shipping on November 21.
The expansion of Fire TV Edition-branded products is also meant to challenge Roku on the success of its Roku TV-branded television sets, which are similarly manufactured by partners but run the Roku OS.
In the U.S., Roku OS is the No. 1 licensed TV OS in the U.S. and now powers more than 1 in 3 smart TVs. Amazon is today is clearly answering that challenge by focusing on the international markets with a suite of new partners for Fire TV Edition.

Writing with Speech Recognition Software
A professional writer might add a thousand words a day to their rough draft. With speech recognition software, some writers can add several thousand. That’s one reason why more writers are choosing to dictate their books. Today the error rate of speech recognition software has improved to within a percentage point of a human being. According to IBM, even a human transcriptionist hears the wrong word 4 or 5 percent of the time. IBM reached 5.5 percent in 2017. Google claims even lower than that – 4.9 percent in 2017.
Speech recognition can be found in Google Docs, Windows 10, your smartphone and in various home devices. Dragon Naturally Speaking is the only commercially-available speech recognition software for consumers, mostly because they bought all their competitors. According to their website, “Dragon is 3x faster than typing and it’s 99% accurate.” For higher accuracy, Dragon can be trained to recognize your own voice and vocabulary.
Tips for writing with speech recognition
Dictate in complete phrases or sentences. Recent advances in accuracy have come not so much from speech recognition (“that’s a buh not a duh”) as from language recognition (“after the words ‘eat’ or ‘peel’ the sounds ‘buh nah nuh’ are probably ‘banana’). I can sometimes see my software rewrite a sentence once I’ve completed it, because it now has more of the context and so can recognize more of the words.
Pause between phrases, not words. That’s mostly what I just said, but it bears repeating. Separating parts of speech with pauses (“It was… the… best of… times”) can really confuse the software. It likes to sense the sentence structure as you speak. Pausing between phrases is also a good habit for public speaking, or for speaking in general, for that matter. Yes, you need to pause while you think, but you don’t need to keep talking while you do it.
Watch the screen. If there are any errors or omissions, you want to make sure they’re not so serious that you can’t remember what you really meant to say. I can handle Dragon spelling “to” instead of “too” or “member” instead of “remembering.” But sometimes the software provides a perfectly spelled word that would make no sense later. In that case, I can usually dictate the correct word again, perhaps preceding it with “or rather” as a newscaster might. Or you may be able to train Dragon (and yourself) that you pronounce “to” as “tu” and “too” as “te-yoo.” Or restate your sentence in different words. Don’t worry about polluting your masterpiece with synonyms – it’s probably faster than hemming and hawing for the perfect word. You can perfect it when you edit it.
Keep a consistent tone, speed, and volume. Shouting, whispering or pretending you’re Robin Williams will make the software work harder. It doesn’t appreciate or even recognize histronics. I did a stint as a professional voice transcriptionist, repeating the speech of another person more clearly so that Dragon could understand it better. We maintained a cheerful tone as we worked, but we weren’t dramatic.
Don’t stop for mistakes. Keep a consistent flow, where words come out of your mouth at approximately the same speed they come into your mind. Your mind will appreciate that. Don’t stop to fix typos or punctuation errors. Talk around any blatant mistakes – restate anything that’s unclear but keep dictating. Your first transcription may not be smooth or free of mistakes. But mistakes inspire creativity, because they beg you to fix them. So don’t worry about making mistakes when dictating.
Don’t try to speak the keyboard. You’re better off just dictating words and not trying to operate your computer with your voice. Yes, Dragon has many editing commands: Scratch that, Scratch that <n> times, Go back, Go to top, Stop listening, Search eBay for <text> (NOTE TO SELF: DO NOT TRY TO WRITE NOVEL AND SHOP ON EBAY AT THE SAME TIME.)
But the main commands I use are Period and New line – I’m supposed to be writing not editing – remember? – and I’ve turned off my internal editor. Dragon’s commands are great for people who can’t use a keyboard – they can say Open Google Chrome or Post to Facebook – but the extra learning curve can sour other people on trying the software.
Hands-free editing
I keep Dragon in Dictation Mode, which ignores commands as long as I’m dictating quickly. Otherwise, if one of my paranoid characters shouts, “Stop listening,” Dragon might take me literally and not transcribe anything else.
So how do you edit without using editing commands? Dictate the section again, without the mistakes. Really. It’s probably faster than using the commands. It may be faster than using a keyboard. Many writers with repetitive stress injuries say that what hurt their wrists was not the typing, it was the constant cutting, pasting and mousing. With dictation, the only movement is your mouth and your eyeballs.
Dictation lets you hear your words again, which lets you decide if you really like them. It even lets you combine several versions. You could have both versions open on your computer and switch your eyes between them as you read your favorite paragraph with each. Or you could print out both versions, lay the pages all over the floor, rearrange them as you like, edit them with a fat marker pen, and then smoothly read them back into your microphone.
When I first tried this technique, though, the new version wasn’t much better than the old. I hoped that as I reread the passage, my mind would naturally find things to correct, as a storyteller does. But seeing the text in front of me made it harder to see areas of improvement. A better strategy might be to silently read both versions again, then close my eyes and retell the story into the microphone.
Dictation software works better for some writers than others, and for some types of writing than others. At first you may miss the feel of the keyboard or the pen, or you may be distracted by the sound of your voice. But for many writers, speech recognition software can set their creative process free.
