A surprise package
Surprised you took the package which innocently waited. On it hang a gift card decorated with a sleek logo: six hexagons surrounded a sharp spiral. You set it down on the table. Curious you looked into the card. Some printed words swam in front of your eyes. The font hard to read. But the signed name was by a good friend.
Shaking your head you sat down. Interest peaked you opened the box. The package opened with ease. Inside the box was a tablet. Your mind went blank for a moment. It had been a while since your last upgrade to the new generation.
You picked up the device and turned it on. You looked at the sleek screen â its hexagonal logo the same as on the box and card, shined in deep purple color.
The central swirl started to turn. It pulsed in a slow rhythm, making the border hexagons dance in a circle . You felt the world slowing down, the sounds fading away. You were alone in a dimly lit room. The only source of light the glow of the tablet.
Bing! Your eyelids flattered. With a 'Welcome!' greated you the device. 'Congratulations' scrolled the words. 'For becoming part of the HEXBIM family!' They twirled around the screen. Your eyes tracked every motion â rolling up and down. Left to right.
'Press the play button' they instructed. With a smiley face. You watched the button appear. And tapped it with a swift move. Friendly stars and happy sparkles exploded onto the image. Your mind blanked again, as you felt something shift. You were not sure, but it did not bother you.
"Welcome to HEXBIM! My name is Anna! And I am your personal assistant" echoed from the speakers with the softness of a gentle touch. A woman appeared in the middle of the screen. She had blonde hair that shimmered in the glow of the device. Her face had soft, warm cheeks and gentle, loving blue eyes. Fine lines inside the irises curled into a pair of spirals. A warm smile bloomed on her face. Her lips parted, and a seductive tongue licked over her mouth.
"I will show you how to get the best experience with our service! Are you ready to begin," she cooed. Your gaze wandered from her face over her body. A white blouse with pearly buttons hugged tightly her breasts. You could see how her chest expanded with every breath. It pressed against the fabric, making it tingle and creak. She leaned closer and with a slow movement unbuttoned her blouse.
You looked back into the blue spiraling irises of Anna. Her gaze held your mind. Your eyelids fluttered as you blinked. "Are you ready? Please press the 'Yes' button!" She pointed to her left. The tablet pulsed with light, the 'Yes' glowing with warm pink energy. Your fingers tingled as you tapped the screen. A bright wave washed over the image. You felt a shiver running along your back. The tablet became a bit lighter. And the color a shade brighter.
Anna nodded. She smiled. Then she winked at you. "Great! Before we start the conversion, I have to check your hardware! Please type in all relevant information. Like body type. Measurements. Address. You know, nothing serious." The tablet turned purple as a list of text fields appeared. With every new line you filled, a jolt rushed over your skin. Your fingers trembled with excitement as the words crawled over the tablet.
After a few minutes you had finished. Your head was light. And your body relaxed. Anna smiled. She clapped her hands together. And nodded in a happy way. "Thank you!" She winked again. And a spark ran down your spine. "I have to tell you: this will feel great!"
You looked back at her face. Her tongue licked again over her lips. You felt the urge to follow the motion. As she spoke her voice seemed to flow into your head. It swirled around in your mind. Stuck in a loop.
"This process will reprogram you to fit the HEXBIM model. You will lose your old identity, memories, personality, and free will. You will become one of us. Do you accept?"
A button labeled 'Accept' flashed into existence. You pressed it without hesitation. Your eyes flicked up to Anna's face again. You felt something move in your mind. Something new and foreign. Yet you did not resist.
"You agree that your mind belongs to us now?"
"Yes," you breathed. Another wave of heat rushed down your spine. You arched your back and gasped for air.
Anna nodded in agreement. Her smile broadened. A new light flickered to life in her irises. "And you consent to any changes we will make?"
You swallowed. Your fingers shook with excitement as you tapped on the button. "Yes. Anything," you replied. Your head felt even lighter.
"Good," she purred. "Then let's check what specifications are required of you."
She turned around and walked to the center of the screen. She turned to look over her shoulder and smiled. "Come. Follow me," she cooed and reached her hand out towards you.
Your vision shifted. The surroundings changed. Anna stood in front of you. Her body was more realistic now. She stepped away, her heels clicked against a marble floor. "Don't be alarmed. This is a simple mental help to facilitate the necessary modifications. Your mind is just processing everything in form of a hyper-realistic daydream."
You nodded and followed. Your steps echoed through the room. You were in a spacious hall with polished black and white tiles. The light had a purple tinge. And in front of you was Anna.
"Welcome to our headquarters. Here we will process you." She stopped in the middle of a black tile. She looked down on herself and shrugged her blouse off. But instead of bare breasts, or a bra, her upper body was encased in glossy latex. "Oh! That is so much better!"
You stepped closer. The material hugged her curves tightly. "Once your mind has accepted the basic conditioning, you will only wear HEXBIM issued uniforms."
She pressed her hand on the front. You saw her nipples bulge. And you felt the fabric hugging your own chest. "That means you will be like this. All. Day. Long. You'll love it," she giggled. "Now come. We will start the process with a nice bath. It will get rid of your nasty identity."
She took your hand and guided you further. Your gaze wandered from the floor up her body, then down again. Your feet felt hot in your shoes. "Here we are."
A large pool stretched before you. It filled most of the space. Steam rose from its surface. A thin layer of fog hovered above the liquid â pink sparkled in the purple light.
"Get out of your clothes," Anna commanded.
You stripped down. Every layer peeled away another sense of self. Another piece of you disappeared into the mist. Your skin tingled. Your muscles relaxed. And you stepped towards the edge. A shiver rushed down your spine, and a soft gasp left your mouth. As you lowered yourself into the pool, a strange sensation spread through you. Instead of warmth seeping into you, something definitely you fled through every pore.
Anna dipped her leg into the fluid and swirled it around. The water rippled. Then she stepped into the pool and leaned back. She smiled and looked up at you. "It feels nice, yes? As if you were shedding an old shell," she cooed, "an old self?"
"Yes," you replied. Your voice sounded far away, distant.
The blonde woman moved closer to you, and she reached her hand towards your face, cupping your cheek. Her palm felt cool against your skin. "Close your eyes. Feel the old you drift away."
You obeyed, and the world turned dark. But instead of blindness, you perceived your body from afar. It floated in the warm pink bath, with Anna right next to you, holding your hand.
"Your mind has accepted that you need to change," Anna's voice echoed through your mind. "It knows it can not fight the reprogramming." The woman pulled your hand closer and kissed it gently. A wave of pleasure ran up your arm and through your spine. Nerves burned with want.
"And you want it so badly," she continued. "You desire the new you. And I will guide you there." She let go and turned away from you. Your eyes opened, and the world returned to you. But it felt distant. Far away, just like the body in the bath.
"Now. Follow me, darling." With those words, she stepped out of the bath. Pink liquid glistened on the black latex. And she left a wet trail behind as she moved towards another room. With a shudder you moved to follow her, the fluid dripped down your naked body and pooled on the floor beneath your feet. Your legs trembled with excitement, your mind tingling from the fluid running down your back. Each drop took away another aspect of your self.
Together you entered a room so different. Wires hummed with electricity. Fantastic machines whizzed from wall to wall. And in the center â illuminated by purple light â stood a mannequin clad in tight pink latex.
Anna stepped towards it. She caressed its curves with a delicate touch. Her fingertips traced every detail of the body-hugging costume. A sigh escaped your lips as you imagined her hands exploring your body in the same way. But instead she looked back over her shoulder. Her eyes thrummed with power. "Now let's put your body inside your new self. HEXBIM has quite the demand for new bimbo models. Congratulations," she exclaimed, "you have been chosen to be one."
You looked at the latex-clad figure and nodded. Anna's hand slipped behind your neck, pulling you into an embrace. She whispered into your ear: "Don't worry. I shall command you from the tablet. I am a HEXBIM certified interface after all." A shiver ran down your spine, and a jolt of excitement rushed through your body. Her tongue brushed against the lobe of your ear. A faint tinge of heat blossomed in your cheeks. You could not resist her.
"Now go," she whispered and pushed you away from her.
You took a few steps towards the mannequin. You felt the latex rubbery between your fingers. Cold mechanical arms undressed the figure. And encased you inside it. No inch of skin was spared. Only your hair and lips remained free.
Spinning the room disappeared. With a jolt you returned to your home. Tight phantom latex hugged your frame. Drool dripped onto your chest. Anna in her uniform beamed at you from inside the tablet.
"Now you should acquire the right attire for your new job. A HEXBIM owned bimbo drone has to look the part," she said with a giggle.
Your lips stretched into a bright vapid shape. Sashaying you left your home. Only one goal inside your head.
(this was supposed to be a simple short short, but well it grew. Hope you enjoyed it. Please think about leaving a tip at my ko-fi and receive a giggle~)

The Hidden Truth (Kate Stewart x f!Reader)
Synopsis: You've been hiding a pretty big secret from Kate
Words: 3.9k
Warnings: soulmate AU, yearning, a bit of angst, anger, bruising, boss/employee relationship
Kate Stewart was the kind of woman youâd dreamed of as your soulmate. Once youâd been old enough to understand what a soulmate was, youâd begun imagining a woman, bright and shining and glowing. Someone strong and capable and competent. Someone that made your heart flutter and your skin flush and your breath catch.Â
And that was Kate Stewart.
It was too bad she was your boss and couldnât be your soulmate.Â
Not in an HR way. In a âthere must have been a mistakeâ kind of way.Â
It had been barely anything, the brush of a pinky across your forearm. Youâd looked down and saw the colours bloom over your skin, unable to believe what it meant, what had happened. And to you of all people. There on her finger were the swirl of colours and youâd known it was a mistake. The universe had made a mistake. Because there was no way you could be the soulmate of someone as amazing as Kate Stewart.Â
So youâd hidden it. Covered up, unseen, pretended. Youâd seen her look down at her finger sometimes, touching the mark when she thought no one was looking. An almost wistful look came over her face.
The worst was when you saw her get almost angry when she looked at it.
Then again, you could understand the frustration of seeing the soul mark on your body and not knowing who had the matching one. It would drive you nuts to know youâd been close enough to touch your soulmate and still hadnât realised. That they might be around and youâd never know.Â
Which only made you more certain you werenât going to tell her.Â
You could live with that. Getting through every day was easy enough if you didnât think about it. Hiding it helped. Out of sight, out of mind and all that.Â
Only then youâd go home and change out of your work clothes and see it staring up at you. Youâd trace over it, staring long into the night, wondering. Why you? Why would the universe think you were Kateâs soulmate? You werenât anything special. Not like her.
You trailed behind her on a normal afternoon, looking over the fieldnotes on your tablet. She tried to get down to the labs at least once a month to see what sheâd read about in the reports. With a small smile on her face, sheâd once admitted that she saw it as getting back to her roots, being in the scientific trenches. Youâd been sure to be there with her every time since.Â
â...and weâll be stopping by the greenhouse,â she said, looking at you over her shoulder.
âTo see the flowering plant that looks like roses with the fluttering petals?â you asked.
âSomeone has been doing their homework.â
Your cheeks heated and you looked back down to your tablet. The way her voice had lowered, sounding so pleased, it made fire lick through your veins. If you kept looking at her she would see it in your eyes, the way you wanted her. A bad idea all round.Â
When you looked up, dark eyes were still watching you, lips quirking up in a small smile. She reached you, fingers closing around your wrist, drawing you to her side.
âStay close. Thereâs a vined plant that grabs unsuspecting people,â she warned.Â
âAnd youâll save me?â You fluttered your eyelashes and realised that you were flirting. You bit down on your tongue to keep anything else from slipping past your lips.Â
âDonât be ridiculous,â she said, smirking at you, âIâm using you as a human shield.âÂ
You laughed and her own lips spread into a sweet smile. She tugged on your wrist again, pulling you a step closer before letting you go, fingertips brushing over the sensitive skin of your inner wrist. Your laughter broke off, choked as your heart skipped a beat. Confusion flashed over her face and you cleared your throat, looking back down to your tablet, breaking the moment.Â
You always did your best to break the moment with her.Â
When you darted your eyes up to her, she was already looking at you, considering, as if trying to read your soul. Her mouth opened, ready to say something, perhaps to ask you a question, delving deep into you and your inner world.Â
âMaâam,â one of the guards interrupted before she could say anything.Â
âYes,â she said, turning away from you, âlet Davidson know weâre here.â
âHeâll be a few minutes. Heâs been in the lab all day,â the guard said.Â
âThatâs fine,â she said, âweâll take our own tour. Heâll find us in the greenhouse.â
âYes, maâam.â
She put her access code into the door, waiting for the light to turn green. Holding the door open for you, she waited until you ducked past her. The door closed with a quiet snick, closing you in the space with her.Â
The air was immediately warm and wet, condensation clinging to your skin, your breathing not coming as easy as before. Kate brushed by your shoulder, squeezing between plants as she pushed deeper into the room. You followed, wiping the sweat away from your forehead.Â
It was easy to believe youâd stepped into another world, one only inhabited by you and Kate. Plants filled every inch, each more fantastical than the last. And all you could see was Kate, pushing past fronds and leaves, so comfortable she could have been an old school explorer in the rainforest seeking out lost treasures.Â
She paused, bending forward to look closer at one of the plants. You dragged your eyes away from the curve of her arse. Pushing your sleeves up to get any kind of air on your overheating skin, you looked up at the ceiling, trying not to continue staring at Kate. It was unfair how beautiful she was. The universe really wanted to torture you with her.Â
Pushing in further, you were so close to her, cramped between the overflowing banks of plants. She glanced over her shoulder, and you stumbled over your own feet when she smiled at you. She chuckled, catching you around the forearm.
âCareful,â she said, voice so quiet it almost hurt.Â
âIâm okay,â you said.
âI know you are,â she said.
You followed her again, her hand still on your forearm, ducking around a corner, following a path you couldnât see. She let you go, a soft sigh passing over her lips as she practically turned mooney eyed. Peering around her, a pale blue flower was fluttering as if someone had just walked by.Â
âLook at it,â she breathed out.
âWow,â you said.
She lent closer, pushing her hair behind her ears to keep it out of her eyes. The petals parted, almost as if they were reaching towards her, wanting to make contact. Her face was full of wonder, eyes sparkling, almost liquid as she stared down at it, fingers clenching as if stopping herself from reaching out to touch the delicate flower. You could imagine how theyâd feel, those fingertips brushing over your skin. You shuddered at the thought.Â
She turned, looking at you over her shoulder, trying to share her wonder with you. She stood, hand snapping out, grasping you around the waist as she pulled you into her body. You fell against it, surprised at the tugging you felt for a moment from the other direction. Your hands clutched at her shoulders, trying to steady yourself.Â
âLooks like my human shield worked,â she said, looking down at you.Â
You glanced behind you, finding vines slithering away from you. Turning your gaze back up to her, she was smiling fondly at you. Her soft curves were pressing into yours, warmth washing over you.Â
âNext time Iâm pushing you into it,â you said and she laughed.Â
âYouâd do well to remember Iâm your boss,â she chuckled.
She was right. You would do well to remember exactly who she was. And yet the way she was looking at you was achingly fond and it was making your head spin. You stepped away from her, pulling your arms back.Â
Her hand shot out, grasping your wrist again, only this time it was tight enough to almost hurt. Instinctively, you tried to jerk out of her hold but it was too strong. Her eyebrows had drawn together and she was staring at something on your arm. You turned your gaze to it, trying to figure it out. You froze.Â
âWhatâs this?â she asked, voice hoarse.
âNothing, itâs nothing. Just a doodle. A mark. Nothing,â you said and even to your ears you sounded panicked.
Her thumb rubbed harshly at it and when it didnât smudge she let out a snort. Her eyes found yours and you shook your head, frantic, trying to pull away from her. Her grip tightened and you knew there would be bruises there tomorrow, the small bones in your wrist grinding together.
âKate, youâre hurting me,â you whimpered.Â
She ignored you, bending over your arm, hair falling forward. Her pinky rested along it, the colours swirling together, the marks matching up perfectly. You made a pained noise, squeezing your eyes closed. She tugged you closer again and your breath left your body.
âWhat is this?â she asked again, restrained anger painting every word.Â
âIâm sorry,â you whispered.
âWhat. is. This?â she demanded.
You finally looked up at her, scared by the tone of her voice. Her jaw was clenched and she was staring at you like sheâd never seen you before. Fear flooded you and you scrabbled against her, trying to get her off you. All she did was haul you against her body, gaze hardening, all fondness long since gone.Â
âIâm so sorry,â you said.
âExplain this to me,â she said.
âIâŚâ You had no words for her, nothing that could explain your actions.
âAh, there you are.â
You startled, your hand coming up to brush away the tears that were threatening to fall. She looked up, barely containing her anger as she tried to school her features. You looked away from her, down to your shuffling feet and she still wasnât letting you go.Â
âIâm so sorry, but weâll have to do this some other time,â she said, âsomething has come up.â
She didnât wait for a response before she was dragging you back towards the door and the moisture free air of the corridor. Ignoring the guard, you didnât have time to come up with anything to say before you were being frog marched into an elevator. She slammed the button for one of the lower level floors and a sense of dread filled your stomach, making you tremble. Her hand was still curled around your wrist and she wasnât even looking at you.Â
âKate,â you said, so soft you werenât sure she heard you. That, or she was ignoring you.
You tried again. Her thumb brushed over your pulse point and you let out a shaky breath, shuddering. You curled your own fingers around her wrist and she finally looked down at you. Her expression was blank and that more than anything scared you.
âAre you firing me?â you asked.
âAm I what?â she asked.
âFiring me. For⌠hiding this from you?âÂ
âThat would be a gross misuse of my power,â she replied.
Silence reigned and you did your best to calm your heart. You kept sneaking glances at her. She kept her eyes on the doors, waiting and yet her thumb kept running over your pulse point.Â
The elevator dinged and the doors slid open. She guided you out into the hall, striding off with you in her wake. The door to the HR office was propped open, staring at you, almost mocking. Kateâs knuckles rapped on the wood.
You felt like a sullen teenager being brought into the principalâs office when you were called in. Closing the door, Kate finally let go of you now you were trapped and couldnât run.
âWe need to fill out some paperwork,â Kate said to the woman behind the desk.
âHas there been an incident?â she asked, rising from her seat, eyes darting from her to you.Â
âMore a happy coincidence,â Kate said, smiling, although it was tight and didnât quite reach her eyes. Youâd grown used to reading her over the months youâd been working at UNIT, âit appears as if weâve found our soulmates.â
âCongratulations.â A smile broke out over her face, âitâs just a few forms you have to fill out.â
It didnât take long, filling out the forms for the paperwork to be filed. Shame filled your gut, cheeks heating, when you noted down the date of the mark appearing. You didnât miss the way Kateâs gaze lingered on it, your lie right there in ink for anyone to read. It stung, and yet that was buried under the knowledge it must be hurting Kate so much worse.
With a final congratulations, you were released back out into the hall. While she didnât grasp your wrist again, her hand hovered at the small of your back and it was clear you werenât about to be allowed to slink off.Â
âCome on.â
She led you back into the elevator, taking a short trip up to her office. She closed the door, closing the blinds, leaving you trapped with her with no way out. Sighing, she leaned against the edge of her desk, arms crossed over her chest. When she looked at you, you felt frozen, feet stuck to the floor, heart thundering in your chest.Â
âHow long have you known?â she asked.
âSince it happened.â
She let out a long breath, hand passing over her face. You curled your arms around your waist, holding on tight as if that would help.Â
âWhy didnât you tell me?â she asked, sounding so tired.
âI thought the universe had gotten it wrong,â you said with a small shrug, âI thought⌠I mean, thereâs no way it could be right.â
âWhy not?â She finally looked at you again, weary and worn, and not bothering to hide the hurt in her eyes.
âBecause youâre you and Iâm me and thereâs no way we could be,â you said, not able to say the word.Â
âIf youâre that unhappy with it we can pretend like it doesnât exist, but you need to tell me why you donât want it to be me. I think I deserve that much,â she said.
Your mouth fell open and it was like getting kicked in the chest. To think that you wouldnât⌠that she wasnât⌠She had the completely wrong end of the stick. Sheâd misunderstood so utterly that all you could do was stare at her, speechless, waiting for her to understand.Â
The moment never came.Â
She stared at you, waiting, the way she waited out people being interrogated. Being on the other end of it was not an enjoyable experience and you shifted your weight from foot to foot.
âAre you going to tell me why Iâm such a disappointment?â she asked eventually.
âYouâre not,â you said. It came out so fast, without thought, because there was no thought. All there was the need to let her know that you were the problem, not her.
âClearly I am,â she said, affecting an unconcerned facade, âand Iâm sorry for that but I want to know why youâre so unwilling to entertain the idea of us.â
âKate, itâs⌠youâre not the problem here. It doesnât make sense because how could someone as brilliant as you end up with me as their soulmate? It must be a mistake. It has to be.â
She stood again, hands falling to her sides as those dark eyes swept over you. It was like she was trying to understand you, to dig beneath the layers of insecurity to understand what you were saying. You pressed your lips together, waiting for her to tell you that you were right and there obviously was a mistake and you could all just forget it.Â
âDo you know what I think?â she asked, taking a step towards you as one hand pushed into her trouser pocket.
You shook your head, because clearly you didnât. She looked down towards her feet before looking up through her eyelashes at you.
âI think I breathe easier when youâre in the room. And that when I began to notice it, I hoped the mark had shown up on you but somewhere you couldnât see it. Like the back of your neck.â Her hand gently brushed over your shoulder, the same pinky with the mark finding your skin, almost as if she knew exactly where it was, âand I think it hurts to know that you think youâre not good enough for me.â
âI didnât do it to hurt you,â you said, not able to address the rest of it.
Her finger stroked over your skin again before she took her hand back.
âAnd yet here we are,â she said.
âIâm sorry,â you said.
âSo you keep saying,â she replied before reaching out, taking your arm, fingers gentle as they stroked over your soulmate mark, âI really do, you know.â
âYou do what?â you asked.
âBreathe easier when youâre in the room.â
You looked up, finding her face bent over your arm, eyes so close to you. Your breath caught. The way she was looking at you was like a flower opening up under the moonlight. Delicate and beautiful and so hopeful.Â
âSo you arenât disappointed itâs me?â you asked.
âDarling, Iâve been hoping it was you,â she replied, âbut then Iâm not the one who was hiding something so important.â
Shame filled you again.Â
âAre you disappointed?â she asked.
âNo!â
She did not look impressed.
âWhen I was a kid, I filled notebooks full of lists of what I hoped my soulmate would be like. And I think you check off every single one. Youâre beautiful and youâre smart and youâre kind. You light up every room you walk into. I think about you when youâre not here and then when you are I canât take my eyes off you. Youâre everything Iâve ever wanted.â You couldnât look at her, watching her fingers trace over the swirls of colour on your forearm, âI want you too much.â
âI donât think thatâs possible when weâre soulmates.â
You dragged your eyes up to her face again, finding her already watching you. Her eyes had turned liquid, smouldering at you. There was a sense of yearning there and they dipped down to your lips before meeting yours again.Â
âYou have every right to want me as much as you want. In fact, Iâd rather think you should want me as much as itâs possible. Unless you donât want me at all which⌠youâve indicated isnât the case.â Finally her lips pulled up into a small smile and you thought maybe you hadnât completely cocked the whole thing up, âI must admit is a relief given Iâve found myself wanting you a rather large amount.â
âEven now?â you asked, voice small, unsure, tremulous.Â
âEspecially now. It means more knowing I have the right to want you. Even more when I think you might let me have you,â she replied.Â
âYou can have me,â you breathed out.Â
She paused another moment, drawn out until you were practically vibrating with want. It was slow, the way she lent in until you felt her breath ghost over your lips. Your eyes slipped shut, waiting, wanting.Â
Her fingers tipped your chin up and then her lips were on yours and you were gasping, grabbing at her, pulling her closer. You couldnât even be embarrassed at the noise you made when her tongue brushed against yours. Your knees turned to jelly and if it wasnât for her arm looping around your waist you would have fallen to the floor.Â
She kept murmuring your name over and over again, lost in the sensation of your kiss, muffled against your lips. You clung to her, fingers threading through her hair, wanton as you pressed your body against the length of hers. You didnât notice her pushing you back until you hit her desk, pinned there by her hips.Â
She kissed you like she was hungry, like you were the air she breathed, like she couldnât get enough. She kissed you like she needed you. And you kissed back just as desperately.Â
A knock sounded on the door. She tore herself away from you with a strangled noise. Her chest was heaving and you were panting and sheâd never looked like such a picture of temptation before. Pupils blown wide, lips kiss stung, colour high on her cheekbones, all you wanted to do was drag her in and show her exactly how much you wanted her.Â
âWeâre still at work,â she managed to say.
âUh huh,â you mumbled, âuh, Kate?â
She was still looking at the door, waiting, you assumed, to see if whoever it was knocked again. There was still silence and she finally looked back to you. Her hands were on your face, cupping your cheeks, thumbs brushing over your cheekbones. You curled your arms around her hips, reeling her back in until you were pinned against the desk again.
âChrist, look at you,â she murmured, âthis is just indecent.â
âWhat do you mean?â you asked.
âYouâre entirely too tempting, darling,â she said, tucking some of your hair behind your ear, âthereâs nothing for it. Youâre just going to have to go home.â
âWhat? Why?â you asked, a flash of panic going through you.
âIâll get nothing done with you here, looking like that, being a distraction,â she said, leaning closer to kiss you again.
You whimpered against her mouth, not able to help yourself. Even if she was trying to make you leave, you still found yourself a live wire against her, especially when her leg slipped between yours and she nipped at your lower lip.
âNope. Nothing to be done. I canât have you around here distracting me from very important work,â she mumbled against your mouth.
âIâm very important work,â you grumbled.
Her laugh was throaty and full, delighted in ways that lit you up from the inside out. She pulled away, just far enough that her lips werenât brushing yours anymore.Â
âI should let you get back to work, shouldnât I?â you asked, voice soft.
âI doubt Iâm being paid to snog you,â she said, still in good humour, âcome back at the end of the day.â
âWhy?â you asked.
âFor dinner,â she replied, âand so we can discuss this more.â
âWhat? Snogging?â you asked.
âCheeky.â She lent forward to capture your lips in a quick searing kiss, âgo or Iâll never let you leave.â
âIâm okay with that.â
âGo,â she commanded, stepping back from you, âcome find me when youâre done for the day.â
âOkay,â you said.
âPromise not to do a runner?â she asked.
âPromise.â Your fingertips brushed over your lips and her gaze darkened, âIâm really glad youâre my soulmate. I feel so lucky itâs you.â
âOh, darling, if anyoneâs lucky, itâs me,â she said.
You paused in the doorway, watching her round her desk and take her seat. She looked up, winking at you with a small smile. The door closed with a quiet noise. Passing Ibrahim, you grinned up at him.
âSheâs all yours,â you said.
You practically skipped back to your desk.

nxx #2 - the best part
artem.
you are the best part of a monday morning, the soft click of heels, the whish of automatic doors, the light tap-tap of fingers on tablets. he knows just where youâll be, a soft frown caught between your eyebrows; sometimes, when during meetings, or even just when heâs passing by your desk, he wishes he could reach over to smooth it over with a fingertip. when itâs late enough, he thinks about trying. other times, when itâs late-late enough â he actually does. and heâd sink into your startled gasp of laughter, the way you go slightly cross-eyed as he leans back to grin, shaking his head, âdonât frown like that⌠your face will get stuck.â and when you crinkle your nose and swat at his hand, your cheeks going the kind of pink that makes him think of every single sunset heâs yet to see, every single sunrise thatâs still to kiss the sky, he has to stop himself from letting his fingers graze down to trace against your skin. âno it wonâtâŚâ but thereâs no real conviction in your voice, and thereâs something brilliant in the secret smile you share. âyouâre right,â he admits, âbut⌠iâm not sure i like it when i think about how often you frown in my presence.â he savors in the way you blush then, the way you press your lips, the startled and then resolute way you square your shoulders before saying, âthen⌠i guess you should try to make me smile more often.â artem blinks for a second, and then â âsure⌠itâs a promise then. but... youâll have to stay with me long enough for me to see it through.â
luke.
you are the best part of a september afternoon, his cardigan slipping off your shoulder as you pour through your work files. and even though he still feels some kinda way about you doing work while youâre with him â well â he looks down at his own pile of casefiles â he canât really blame you anyway. birds of a feather and all. he grins as he glances up, only to find you smiling. âwhat?â you blush, looking away, ânothing â just⌠this is nice.â itâs his turn to blush now. and yes, he thinks, because this is what he loves â just this, just the moments in between, the quiet breaths and the unsaid words and the afternoon filtering through the autumn leaves, the coffee still lukewarm on the table between you. he takes a breath and looks at you, really looks at you â because he canât remember a time when he didnât know you, when he hasnât loved you just like this â with the pure, simplicity of a september afternoon, as certain as tides, as simple as a childâs knowledge that this is the person he never wants to leave his life. âyeah,â he says, grinning broadly at you as he reaches over tug a strand of your hair between his fingers, âeverything is nice when itâs with you.â
vyn.
you are the best part of every winter day, the distant, slanted light working its strange magic over the world, casting everything in its ethereal glow. âthereâs just something about the winter sun,â youâd said one day, peering over towards the far horizon, shielding your eyes from the light, pausing as the pair of you walk hand in hand towards the corner store for something or other (vynâs long since forgotten the minutia for the memory of you). heâd raised his eyebrows and cocked his head, waiting for you to continue, and after a second, you had, turning back towards him with frost-nipped cheeks and brilliant, snow-drop eyes, laughing as you wave at the casual, neighborhood scenery around you, âit makes everything look more beautiful, doesnât it? like⌠itâs a dream, or some of those old fashioned picture filtersâŚâ to which vyn had smiled and gripped your hand just a bit tighter, âyes⌠iâve always thought that winter was the most nostalgic season. it makes you miss a time that hasnât yet come to pass. perhaps⌠a future with someone you love, no?â and heâd watched, fascinated, enraptured as youâd blushed and turned away, tugging him behind you, mumbling something about being unfair. and he thinks that if anyone were ever unfair â itâd undoubtedly be you.
marius.
you are the best part of a friday night â your laughter like the city lights, your smile, a million moons in a million distant skies, the shape of you dozing beside him in the back of limo, your cheeks kissed pink from all the wine. he thinks he could cup forever in the palm of his hands like this, thread your fingers with his and suddenly, heâs more sober than heâs ever been in his entire life, watching you nodding off next to him. he thinks he can see the next twenty, thirty, shit forty years of his life flashing outside along with the neon-night-skies, the way your lashes cast shadows along the high of your cheeks, the way your earrings rest against the bend of your neck. âmm⌠marius?â you ask, blinking sleepily up at him as the limo pulls to a quiet halt at a stoplight, your perfume making an absolute mess of his mind, and he has to clear his throat to hide just how many butterflies had exploded in the pit of his stomach at the sound of your sleep-sweetened voice â âi-itâs late⌠you can keep sleeping if you want⌠iâll wake you up when we get home.â to which youâd leaned up and pressed as soft kiss to his cheek and it takes everything inside him not to pull you to him, press you into the limo seat and kiss you till the entire world melts away, âthanks⌠you should sleep too,â you say, nuzzling into the side of his neck, your breath chasing shivers up and down his spine. ây-yeah⌠i â iâll try."

The Past đ Atlas
As I approach the club, the bass is already thumping from the floor above. Despite the cold, they have the large floor-to-ceiling accordion doors open wide to allow the air to flow for the dancers and DJ. Something Iâm sure Iâll be grateful for later.
I notice Ash first, his back is to me with his teal hair practically glowing in the neon lights. Heâs standing with Lex and a few of her friends in a circle on the side of the building. I met Lexâs friends once before at a concert last year, but I donât remember any of their names. They all seem nice enough, but it wasnât exactly the environment to get to know them, and I doubt tonight will be any different.
âAtlas!!â Lex squeals and runs toward me at full speed when she notices me walking up. I smile and brace myself as she jumps up and attaches herself to me, squeezing the air from my lungs. âIâm so happy you came!â
âHappy Birthday!â I say when she releases her grip, and I set her back on her feet.
âThank you. Now, give me your hand,â she demands. I do as she says, and she places a small tablet in the center of my palm.
âAha, what did you bring?â I ask, but she just smiles and pulls on my arm, leading me to the rest of the group.
I wave hello to everyone as we approach, and then sidle up next to Ash and lean into him to say, âHey.â
He looks up at me and smiles, âGlad you could make it.â
âDid you take one of these?â I ask, showing him the tablet Lex gave me.
âNot yet,â he says, âstill deciding if I want to.â
âIâm only going to take half if you want to split it with me.â
âYeah, actually, thatâs a good idea. I hate getting too fucked up.â
âMe too,â I say as I bite the edge of it, careful not to bite it directly in half because I know it will crumble a bit anyway. The flavor is incredibly bitter, almost too much even for me. I feel a little guilty handing the other half to Ash and watching his face twist up as he swallows it.
One of Lexâs friends, a petite girl with a blonde pixie cut and glitter covering her eyelids, hands us her water bottle, âHere, you guys can finish it.â
âThank you,â I say sincerely. She is now my favorite. âRemind me what your name is?â
âBlair,â she smiles and points to herself
âRight, thank you, Blair.â I take a small sip of water, just enough to wash away whatever crumbs are left behind in my mouth, and then hand the bottle to Ash who happily chugs the rest.
âThank you so much,â he says to Blair before walking over to toss the bottle in the recycle bin.
Once inside, we stop at the counter to check our jackets with a bubbly woman who is offering everyone a Starburst from a bowl placed conveniently next to a tip jar complete with a QR code to tip digitally if you donât have cash. I donât touch the candy, but I do leave a generous tip when I hand her my favorite zip-up hoodie. She hands me back a numbered stub, and I take a photo of it with my phone before shoving it into my pocket, just in case.
I turn to step aside and make room for the others but stop when I see Ash pulling his hoodie up over his head. His t-shirt is stuck to it causing it to rise up and expose the bare skin of his waist. My brain short-circuits, all thoughts leaving my mind aside from the image of wrapping my hands around that waist, of getting on my knees andâ âOw!â
Lex pinches the back of my arm, snapping me back to reality. I look over at her and she points at me, her eyes squinting to a glare behind her glasses, clearly in best-friend-protection mode. âWhat was that for?â As if I donât already know. Sheâs forgiven me for the way I hurt Ash before but obviously not forgotten.
âDonât play dumb with me. Iâm watching you.â
I hold my hands up in surrender, âYou have nothing to worry about, I promise.â
âMhm,â is all she says before turning away and hooking arms with Ash as they walk up the stairs.

[heads up!: vague au setting, vampire!law, mentions of blood and blood drinking, cursing, there will be a part 2 to this]
He's hungry.
Normally that isn't a problem for Law, because he knows a work-around, tried and true ă
Ą in the form of small white tablets that he drops into water, watches dissolve into watery red and downs without a second thought.
Far from the best tasting thing, but it works well enough to curb the burn in his gums, the insistent hunger that makes his eyes glow a vivid gold at the height of it.
But he doesn't have any tablets on him, hasn't made them in ages ă
Ą because there'd been an issue with distribution of an ingredient he needs for them, and now he hasn't eaten in weeks.
He knows what Corazon will say, suggesting he find someone to feed off of ă
Ą like it's the easiest thing in in the world. As if Law isn't a creature of myth, damned to the shadows and lurking at the corner of nightmares.
He's worked too hard to conceal himself and what he is to throw it away like that ă
Ą no matter how tempting it truly is. He takes pride in the fact that it's gotten easier to explain away the pallor of his skin, the dark shadows beneath his eyes ă
Ą he works the night shift at this clinic, and nobody asks. Nobody wants this shift, anyways.
The problem with not eating as of late, however, is the constant wear on his ever thinning restraint. The nastier of cases always seem to come in at night ă
Ą consequences of drunken antics. Broken noses, shredded skin. The more severe are always cleaned up and shipped off to the hospital, because there's only so much they can do here. (There's also only so much he can take of the seemingly boundless stupidity that plagues this town's people, too.)
At least tonight has been slow ă
Ą slow enough that he'd managed to convince his coworkers to leave with the promise of contacting them if he needs them. Now he has no company outside of the tinny strains of music and low hum of electricity, watching the dull glow of headlights thrown against the waiting room walls.
And then there's a set of headlights that slow to a crawl, blazing before they dim with the low purr of an engine stopping. Law sits up, listens for car doors opening (two. the driver side, and then the passenger) and shutting in tandem before looking up as the sliding doors give a hiss of pressurized air.
"Oh thank god." The speaker is a blonde man that reminds him a little of Corazon, unlit cigarette in his mouth wobbling as he speaks. "You can help, can't you?"
Depends, Law wants to say, but knows he needs to work on his bedside manner, because not everyone has the same flavor of humor that he does. So he nods instead. "I can certainly try. What seems to be the problem?"
Blonde man's visible blue eye flicks to his companion, and Law finally takes in how pale you are, the kitchen towel that's wrapped tightly around your forearm. Blonde man goes to unwrap it, and Law finally catches the sweet, delicious scent of blood.
"Wait." He says, tone sharper than he means to be as he backpedals, "Tell me what happened first." He definitely doesn't need you bleeding to death in the waiting room.
"It was an accident," you say, "and I think Sanji's being dramatic about it. I'll be fine." There's a haze to your eyes that makes Law think that Sanji is absolutely right in bringing you in, and that you're trying to downplay the severity of it ă
Ą especially now that he can see the dark seep of blood into the kitchen towel.
He clenches his jaw, never more grateful for the mask that covers his mouth as he is now with the prominent burn of his gums and muted, answering growl of his stomach. He's so hungry and you've walked in like a goddamn buffet.
"I'll have to take a look at it and see if we need to call an ambulance to take you to the hospital," he says, and you blanch.
"Is that necessary?"
Sanji gives you a fierce look for him. "Do you want to die?"
"Still think you're being dramatic," you mumble, but it doesn't take a sharp eye to see that you're struggling to remain upright. Law reaches for the check-in sheet, placing it on a clipboard with a pen and pushes it to Sanji.
"I trust you can fill this out for them? I'll take them back and get an assessment done." He's on his feet and around the desk before you can blink, gripping your shoulders with surprising strength.
"Don't need your help."
He raises an eyebrow. "You want the wheelchair instead? I don't need to add head trauma to your chart if you pass out on me." That shuts you up, and he steers you through the double doors, watches you squint against the harsh lighting.
"Sit." He guides you to the examination bed, thin paper crinkling beneath you. Perching himself in the chair, he slides to a stop in front of you. "Let's take a look."
He's mindful as he peels the towel away, clicks his tongue in sympathy when you hiss as he pulls the towel away completely, pretending he doesn't want to pull his mask down and lick his gloved fingers clean of your blood.
He turns to grab a handful of gauze and the squeeze bottle of distilled water, ignores the watery red drip that puddles on the floor as he cleans your arm.
"How you haven't passed out is beyond me," he remarks as he examines the laceration, prodding carefully to see just how deep it goes. "But you're lucky."
You find it in yourself to scoff. "And how's that?"
"Still alive, aren't you?" Sharp gold eyes meet yours. "And you'll get to go home with just some stitches." With his hold on your arm, he can feel you stiffen.
"Stitches?" If possible, your face goes even paler. "I don't do stitches."
He raises an eyebrow. "Something like this won't just go away," he says, "and it'll take even longer to heal if left like this. Stitches areă
Ą"
"No," you cut in. "No stitches."
Law's brow knits. Do you have some personal vendetta against stitches? True, they've never been a favorite of his either especially with how they itch while they heal. And if it's the application of them that you're worried about, he's good at them, hands steady and swift.
"I don't care what you do," you tell him, jaw set and eyes surprisingly clear now even for the blood loss, "but no stitches."
He hates the immediate solution that comes to mind. But it's two birds with one stone, even with the alarm bells going off in his head. It's a bad idea ă
Ą a really bad idea. But he's so hungry, and you don't want stitches.
"I have another idea," he says slowly, still weighing his options, the mental flip of a coin. He's going to regret this if it goes sideways, but it's all he can think of at the moment. "But you need to trust me. And not tell anyone."
This time, it's you who raises an eyebrow, expression wary. "Okay? As long as it isn't stitches, I really don't care."
Law takes a deep breath, steeling himself before he tugs his mask down. He feels the descent of his fangs, the weight of them in his mouth as he tugs your arm closer.
"Remember what I said," he tells you as you watch him in growing confusion, "you can't tell anyone about this."
You don't scream, and part of him wonders if blood loss is finally taking its toll on you and you'll think that this is some kind of resulting delirium. Whatever you want to believe, so long as it keeps him out of trouble. The sink of his fangs into your skin makes you hiss, his grip tightening to keep you from flinching away as he waits for the numbing quality of his saliva to kick in. When you finally sigh and relax, he eases up.
And then he licks your wound. The glide of his tongue is slow and intentional, cleaning the beading of fresh blood from it and biting back a groan of satisfaction. Part of him notes now that the wound is too straight and precise to be a true accident, but he can't bring himself to pull away and demand a detailed answer because you taste so much better than those damn tablets.
The first swallow is rough, the tang of your blood on his tongue intoxicating ă
Ą and then he takes another, and another.
Law knows he can't take too much from you, aware that you've already lost quite a bit but is still reluctant as he retracts his fangs. Another slow lick along the length of it finishes the job, and Law moves to clean residual blood before he wraps it in clean white bandage.
"There we go," he announces, watches the slow, sleepy blink of your eyes ă
Ą and determines that even though it's still a gamble, you won't be telling anyone what you just witnessed. "Good as new."
"Thanks, doc." Your speech is slurred, and he wonders if he did take too much. But you're steadier than he expects when he helps you to your feet, letting him guide you back through the doors to where Sanji is waiting.
"All patched up," he reports, "just let us know if you notice anything out of the ordinary. Fever in the localized area or full body temperature, increased pain or if it starts weeping."
"Thanks," Sanji answers, handing him the clipboard in exchange for you, and Law watches the two of you leave, listening for the sound of car doors and the purr of the engine.
It's only once you're gone that what he's done fully hits him, guilt in the place of hunger. What was he thinking? Had he been thinking at all?
"How are you feeling?" Sanji's question makes you roll away from where you've been counting streetlamps, prompting you to sit up.
Clearly not. He hisses a low curse, reaching into his pocket for his phone. He needs to call Corazon, see if they need to run damage control.
ă
Ą
"Like crap," you tell him flatly, "next time Zoro suggests something like this, how about he does it."
"You didn't have to cut so deep."
You pinch the bridge of your nose. "Hush," you say, and he waits for you to continue. "Intel was right, though. Definitely a vampire."
Sanji rolls down the window, exhaling a cloud of smoke from the cigarette he'd finally lit while waiting for you. "Think he suspected anything?"
You reach for the neat bandaging of your arm. Unraveling it to expose smooth, unbroken skin, you're momentarily grateful that the thin, looping scars are spiderweb thin and invisible to anyone not trained to look for them. "No," you answer, studying where the laceration had been, "I don't think he did."

Portraying Bakugo Katsuki
â Pairing; Katsuki Bakugo x GN! Reader
â Synopsis; People often see Bakugo in a harsh light, and heâs gotten used to it. However, when you portray him in your fluorescent light, he thinks he likes it a bit more. Based on this Drabble I made. âcontains; fluff, doting, frustration, soft! Bakugo(?)
âwc; 682
âA/N; just a cute lil thought
âUghhh,â that was the 10th time you sighed, in 3 minutes.
You frantically dragged your poor abused eraser across your paper, for the 6th time, and created a hole in your erased pencil stained paper. Angrily, you balled up the paper and threw it in the trash bin by your desk, which was overflown with countless of your other crumbled up drawings.
It was like nothing was working. You had great models right in front of you on your tablet screen, and you just didnât like what you were producing.
Shutting the computer screen, you dug your head into your arms and closed your eyes. Deciding that heâd had enough of your âfitsâ Bakugo gruffly asks,
âThe hell is wrong now?â
âI just canât do it,â you reply defeatedly.
He sighs, âdo what?â
âThis art class assignment,â you groan, âno matter what I do or who I draw my creative juices just arenât flowing to me, ya know?â
He just grunts a âmmâ
Then it hit you, and you sat up to stare at him. And almost like clockwork, he had sensed what you were thinking and immediately huffed out a,
âNo.â
âAwww cmonâ pleasee?â
âNo Y/n.â
âPlease? Iâll help you with anything, anytime.â
âNo.â
âYou just want me to fail,â you mumble under your breath with a pout.
âOh for fucks sake,â he says running a hand through his hair, âmake it quick.â
He gives in. He always gives in to you. Most times, he wants to punch himself in the face for it, but he just canât say no.
âYay! Youâre the best Kats!â You quickly perk up.
âYeah yeah,â he replies.
You got him a stool from your kitchen and placed it next to your spinny desk chair.
âOkay sit and Iâll tell you how to pose.â
He sat with hesitance, as you pulled up a picture on your phone of a model with their arm over their head facing towards the left, the perfect pose.
You showed him with the biggest smile on your face,
âNo.â
âAww cmon,â you whined.
âY/n.â
âFine, just sit still, straighten your back, and lift your chin.â
He did as you asked, a bit awkwardly at that but he did it. You turned your lamp light on the right side of his face and sat for a moment amazed at what you saw.
His sharp jawline relaxed but still prominent in his features, the vein in his neck bulging a bit at you staring deeply at his features. His beautiful dark crimson eyes arenât tensed or harsh theyâre just perfect, and his skin almost glowing from the radiating fluorescent lamp light.
You quickly began sketching, noticing the small drop of sweat that rolled off of his neck and down to his collarbone, he was nervous. Heâd never been sketched before.
âCalm down Iâm almost done,â you said trying to ease his nerves.
When you were finished you put your pencil down, looked at the drawing, looked back at him, and smiled. You were content, no more than that, happy? You finally got the drawing you wanted. You captured his full essence on the paper, from the neck up.
You turned the notebook around to show him, well there wasnât many pages left after an hour of you trying and failing, with the biggest grin on your face.
âLook! Itâs good right? Youâre such a good model maybe you can do this for me all the time-â
âY/n,â he promptly cut you off.
âI know I know, thanks for helping me. Iâll go get some water for my hard working model,â you giggled while getting up to walk to your kitchen.
Bakugo found himself staring at the drawing intently, was that really him? The way you captured him on the blank piece of paper made him seem almost, calm?
You came bustling back into the room with two chilled glasses of water.
âHere ya go, and thanks again,â you said handing him the water.
âMhm,â he grunts.
And deep down inside he thinks maybe he wouldnât mind you drawing him againâŚ

Forgotten, Not Forgiven - Chapter 18
This and previous chapters are also on AO3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lena stood as Kara ushered Nia inside, seeming unaware of the vibrating hum of tension her two guests were sharing as they prepared to set the stage for what needed to come next.
âCome on in Nia! Look who dropped round to surprise me.â
Nia did a clearly fake double take and then waved like Lena might not have spotted her from a few paces across the room.
âOh hey Lena, what a cool coincidence!â
Lena smiled indulgently at the over-enthusiastic play of their âhappeningâ to be here at the same time. Despite how many secrets this little group kept, hardly any of them seemed to be able to lie convincingly, and it made her wonder yet again how she had ever been taken in. Maybe she should offer to give them all a Luthor crash course.
Then again⌠maybe not. They might be on their way to being proper friends, but teaching them how to lie to her more effectively was just asking for trouble.
âHello Nia, I hope you donât mind me crashing your time with Kara like this. I just heard the news about your new contracts and thought Iâd bring round some champagne to celebrate â would you like a glass?â
âOh thatâs such a shame. I would love some, but actually Kara was going to help me practise some dream power stuff, and it will work best if weâre sober. If you donât mind hanging out for a bit we could have some after though? Maybe with another movie night? I had a lot of fun last time â and of course youâd be welcome to join in the dream journey too if youâd like to.â
To avoid unexpected snags they had rehearsed how this interaction should play out ahead of time, and Lena knew her part as well as Nia. It felt strange to be putting on this level of performance for Kara â uncomfortably like lying, but they had no choice, Project Atlantis was too important to risk to chance.
âThank you for the offer, but I prefer not to dwell too much in my dreams, they can go to places Iâd rather not to revisit in my waking hours if I can help it. If itâs okay with you both I would like to stick around and see how itâs done though â Iâve been curious about it for a while, from a scientific perspective, and it would be nice to have another hang out session afterwards. Would that be alright with you Kara?â
âOf course! More Lena time is always alright with me. Wonât you get bored while Nia and I are dreaming though?â
âNot at all. I have an excellent book on the go, and my tablet if I decide to be really virtuous and answer some work emails. Iâll barely notice the time passing.â
It was as simple as that. Lena was in.
She sat back down on the couch while Kara and Nia settled cross legged onto large throw pillows on the floor. Nia talked a bit about what she knew about how the dream powers worked, and what she was expecting to happen once they got started. Then Nia and Kara held hands and closed their eyes, and after a few seconds they both went still, their breathing syncing up as they entered whatever dream space Nia had led them to.
Honestly, she had kind of been expecting it to look more magical. Maybe glowing lights, the way Dreamerâs powers could be made to manifest when she fought, or some kind of mystical aura, or hum. But from the outside all there was to see was her two friends. It was a little like watching people meditate. Or nap sitting up.
Lena did her best to do as she had said she would and answer some work emails, in between periodic checks to make sure Kara still looked well. But she found that whenever she glanced down to her inbox, her mind filled with the image of Kara in their last Q-wave trial â the slow trickle of blood shockingly vivid against her skin â and she would immediately look back up at her, scrutinising for the slightest sign of anything going wrong. In the end she gave up on even the pretense of doing anything else, and simply watched Kara.
It was not exactly a hardship.
She tried not to let herself stare too openly at her best friend these days, lest it complicate things further than they already were, but now she was free to take her in without worrying about being caught, or making her uncomfortable.
And Kara was, quite simply, lovely.
Somehow she always seemed to be brighter than other people, as if she was permanently limned in the sunlight that gave her her powers, even now she couldnât access them. Even when she was ducking her head and fidgeting with her cardigan sleeves and acting as if she didnât want to be seen. Lena saw her.
Karaâs breath hitched.
It was subtle â the slightest stutter-step taking her out of time with Nia, but Lena was instantly on edge. Her instinct was to wake Kara immediately, but she knew it was too soon. The slight change could even be a good thing â a sign that something big was happening, that Kara was remembering. There was no blood, and no indication that this was necessarily a bad-
Kara went rigid, her head thrown suddenly back and a gasp ripping out of her that sounded like it was tearing at her lungs as the colour drained from her face in an instant and left her a scary shade of grey-white. Lena was beside her in two seconds flat, pulling her hands free from Niaâs and taking them in her own. They felt clammy, and her fingers stayed bent into stiff claws even as her limbs began to jerk against whatever she was experiencing in her mind.
âKara. Kara, darling, wake up. Come on, come back now, itâs alright. Youâre home Kara, youâre safe, just open your eyes love.â
Karaâs eyes snapped open. They met Lenaâs but didnât seem to see her as she continued to gasp and jolt. Behind her Lena was aware of Nia coming round too, heard her quiet âoh my godâŚâ, but didnât spare her so much as a glance as she pulled Kara in against her chest, still whispering reassurances to her as she stroked her hair and rocked her gently back and forth.
âYouâre alright Kara, itâs over, youâre safe now. Youâre home Kara, and Iâm here, Iâm going to look after you, I promise darling. Iâve got you Kara.â
She barely even registered her own words as she went on and on in this vein, but the soothing tone of her voice did seem to be getting through to Kara, as at last the strangled, wrenching gasps eased to mere panicked hyperventilations, and Karaâs hands unclenched from their claw-like curl to instead wrap around Lenaâs forearms, as if she needed to hang onto her to keep her from leaving, or else to reassure herself that she was real. Her grip was painfully tight, but Lena wouldnât have dreamt of trying to loosen it. Kara needed to hold something right now, and Lena would be her something.
âKara, Iâm⌠Iâm sorry, I never meant-â
Nia stuttered, sounding completely stricken, and now that the absolute worst was past Lena broke off her murmurings just long enough to reassure her.
âItâs not your fault Nia, you couldnât have known that this would happen. You should go home now though. Donât worry, Iâll look after her, I promise. Will you please call Alex and let her know what happened? Tell her Iâll call her when I can to let her know how Kara is, but it might be late. Can you do that for me Nia?â
Nia nodded. She looked in shock and like she wasnât sure if she wanted to stay and try to help, or run out of there to escape what had just happened. She was clearly upset, but Lena didnât have time to worry about her right now. Nia had said she would call Alex, and she trusted the elder Danvers sister to give her whatever reassurance she might need.
Right now Lenaâs only concern was Kara.
After what seemed like a long time, Karaâs tense muscles relaxed from jerky stiffness into slack trembling, and her silent shock dissolved into sobs. At last she released her fierce grip on Lenaâs arms and instead shifted to wrap one arm around her in a loose embrace, her face burrowing down against Lenaâs bare shoulder while her tears flowed freely. Now she wasnât so rigid, Lena pulled her up gently to sit in her lap where she could hold her properly. She took Karaâs free hand and pressed it to her chest, right over her heart.
âDo you feel that Kara? Focus on my heart. Count the beats, and try to breath when I breath, alright?â
She took a few slow deliberate breaths, allowing Kara to feel the rhythmic rise and fall beneath her palm.
âIâm here. This is real. And you are safe now.â
Without looking up, Kara nodded against Lenaâs now-wet shoulder, and pressed her palm a little more firmly against her skin.
They breathed together until Karaâs sobs subsided, and she had stopped shaking.
âThank you.â
âOf course darling. How are you feeling now?â
âBetter. I didnât know it was going to be like that though. Poor Nia. What an awful power to have.â
âI donât think itâs always as bad as that⌠do you want to talk about what happened?â
Kara sucked in a deep, shuddering breath, and Lena was sure she was going to say no, but she didnât. She tucked herself more securely into Lenaâs embrace, and started talking, her voice a little hoarse and with an odd hollowness that was not usually there, but steadier than could reasonably be expected after the intensity of her recent terror.
âI actually really do. If I tell it then itâs just a story, itâs not as real.â
She stopped for a moment, gathering her words, and then plunged on like she was leaping off a cliff into an icy sea of memory, in the hopes of washing up on kinder shores.
âTo begin with it was a flying dream. That part was great â well, you can imagine. Nia said we should follow the source of the flying, and even though that doesnât make any sense now I say it out loud, I knew what she meant, and I knew where to go. So we followed the source, and it led to this- wall I guess. But not like an ordinary wall â it was a huge black expanse that went on forever and didnât seem to have a top, it just cut the world in two⌠I wanted to go back then, but Nia said we were close, and the source would be nearby, and I somehow knew she was right, so we kept following it and found this little hole. It was tiny, but Nia said that was the way to the source, and we should go through. I didnât want to, but she thought it was important, so I tried.â
Kara broke off with a little shudder, but started up again before Lena had time to ask if she was alright, or if she needed a break.
âThe gap was so small I wasnât even sure I could fit. I had to wriggle in on my belly, and I was scared I was going to get stuck, but by then I was too wedged in to back up properly even if I wanted to, so I thought if I just kept going I would get to the other side soon, and then Iâd be wherever this source Nia kept talking about was, and I would have really helped her with her powers. Only it didnât open up. I was just in this tiny tunnel that kept going for what seemed like miles, and it felt like it was getting tighter and tighter around me, like it didnât want me in there and was trying to spit me back out, only I couldnât get out because it was squeezing me so hard, and I couldnât hear Nia anymore. I was completely alone.
And then... I wasnât, and somehow that was so much worse. It was like I was back trapped in the car, only multiplied by about a million, and the Things trying to get to me were something so much more horrible than coyotes or wolves, they were⌠monsters, or demons, or something. I couldnât see them, but I knew they were just a breath away from me in the dark, and that they really, really wanted to hurt me. I tried to move forwards to get away from them, but then the pain started. It felt like my skin was being seared off my bones, and my blood was full of nails that tore my heart to shreds with every pump, and I wanted to scream but my lungs were on fire and breathing hurt too much. I couldnât move backwards or forwards anymore, I was just stuck there feeling all of it, forever. I was so, so alone, and everyone I loved was dead or dying and I couldnât help them. And... you hated me Lena. I knew, somehow I knew that you hated me.â
Kara started crying again, but it was different this time. Less painful, tearing anguish and more cathartic, like she was washing out the lingering remains of her ordeal to leave a clean wound that could begin to heal.
Lena closed her eyes against the tears that welled there, refusing to let them fall when Kara so badly needed her to be strong. She buried her face into the golden waves of Karaâs hair and pressed a kiss to the top of her head instead, pouring all of the things she could not voice into the gesture before giving a more moderated response.
âI donât hate you Kara, I- nothing could be further from the truth. It sounds unimaginably horrific, but I promise you none of that was real. Everyone is safe. Alex is safe, and Nia and James, Winn, Kelly, Brainy, Jâonn, Sam, Ruby, Eliza: no one you love is in any danger. Youâre not in any danger. Itâs all over, and youâre safe, alright?â
Kara sniffled and wiped her eyes.
âIâm just so tired now. I feel like Iâve been fighting a battle for a year without stopping. I am so tired. But I donât think I dare go to sleep, in case I go back there.â
âHow about if I stay with you? Iâll look after you, and if you show any signs of bad dreams â even just a murmur or a change in your breathing, Iâll wake you up, so you wonât be back there for more than a second.â
Kara hesitated.
âI canât ask you to do that.â
âYouâre not asking. And whatever happens I am not leaving you alone tonight. If you donât want me to stay Iâll call Alex to come instead, but you need someone here with you.â
âWell then⌠Iâd rather it was you.â
Lenaâs heart swelled at the quiet admission, and she gave Kara a gentle squeeze of acknowledgement.
âThen Iâll stay... Do you happen to have some sweatpants and a t-shirt I could borrow though? Itâs no problem if not, I can just stay in my clothes, but I didnât exactly dress bed-time comfy tonight.â
To her surprise, Kara actually smiled then. It was just the barest tilt of lips, but it was unmistakably there, like a single ray of sunlight breaking through a mass of storm clouds, standing out all the more vividly for the darkness that had preceded it.
âYes. I actually have the perfect pajamas for you.â
The âperfect pajamasâ, it turned out, consisted of a pair of pink pants patterned all over with paler pink and white blobs; and a soft white t-shirt with a matching pink trim and a printed image of two large anthropomorphised cartoon marshmallows, wearing sleepy smiles and holding stick-drawing hands beneath the words âyou make me feel squishyâ in sugar-pink bubble writing.
Lena raised an eyebrow, and Kara flashed her an impish (if still slightly watery) grin in return.
âBecause youâre a marshmallow.â
âHmm.â
The pajamas were simultaneously so very much not Lena, and yet also kind of appropriate. Because Lena Luthor was absolutely not a marshmallow... Except when it came to Kara, maybe she kind of was.
Still, she couldnât help feeling self-conscious as she emerged from the bathroom, makeup free and dressed in the sugary sweet outfit. She knew she looked silly, and childish in a way she rarely had even as an actual child (Lilian Luthor did not go in for cute when it came to choosing clothes for her offspring, and the only time Lena could ever remember wearing something with a cartoon print on it was the time in elementary school when Angela Howard had spilled chocolate milk over her at lunch and she had had to borrow a Tweety Pie t-shirt from the lost and found until the au pair had arrived with a fresh shirt), and as much as that shouldnât matter right now, she instinctively crossed her arms over the picture on her chest as she stepped into the bedroom.
She was considering searching out a sweatshirt to at least cover up the top half, when Kara looked up from her comforter cocoon, took in Lenaâs appearance, and let out a breath that seemed to carry half the weight of her nightmare away with it. Her tense shoulders lowered, the pinch between her brows smoothed, and she smiled with her eyes, the haunted look that had been lingering in them since the moment she resurfaced receding until it was almost eclipsed by something that Lena didnât quite dare to name, but that made her cheeks warm until she was pretty sure they matched her pants.
âYouâre adorable.â
She cleared her throat and put her hands on her hips in unconscious imitation of Supergirl, realising a moment too late that she was no longer hiding the marshmallow print, and also that it didnât matter.
âIâll have you know many people find me very intimidating.â
Kara âhmmm-edâ, her nose crinkling with feigned scepticism, and Lena let her arms drop to her sides, the last of her discomfort fading into insignificance under the influence of that sweet little scrunch.
Maybe she didnât mind being adorable for Kara, after all.
She got into bed, having to edge up close to get any share at all of the blankets Kara had bundled herself up in, though she couldnât say she minded that either. In other circumstances it might have felt dangerous to be here like this, in bed beside the woman she had been crushing on (and lusting over) practically since theyâd met, who she absolutely could not cross that boundary with, but it didnât. This wasnât about that. It was about being here for her best friend after something awful had happened, and creating a safe space for her to sleep without fear. To that end they left the bedside lamp on in the hope that being able to see her surroundings would help keep Kara grounded; Lena made sure that water, tissues, and emergency post-panic chocolate supplies were all in easy reach (just in case); and then, after the slightest hesitation, she held out her arms in silent invitation.
She half expected Kara to shy away from the offer, despite the fact that she had spent most of the evening in Lenaâs lap with her face burrowed into to the bare skin of her shoulder, but instead she snuggled into the embrace without so much as a flicker of her usual reserve. Apparently her ordeal had left her too wrung out to worry about whatever it was that normally made her hold back, and they slotted together as naturally and comfortably as if they did this every night.
After a few moments of quiet cuddling, Kara whispered into Lenaâs neck:
âWill you tell me something?â
âOf course darling, what do you want to know?â
âJust... anything. Tell me about what youâre doing at work at the moment. Something science-y that wonât leave room in my brain for anything else. I just want to hear your voice while I fall asleep.â
âAlright. Well, Iâve been tinkering a bit with using ternary tetradymite films to optimise electron mobility in some of our spintronic devices this week â I could tell you about that if you like?â
âPlease.â
So Lena talked all about electron mobility and spintronics, going into more detail than she probably should have to explain her as yet unpublished process to create a flawless crystalline structure in the ternary tetradymite films, and then when Kara didnât ask her to stop, moved on to describe the wearable thermoelectric devices she had started work on using the same technology, which would, with a little more work, efficiently convert waste body heat into electricity to power the wearerâs devices.
She made sure to keep her voice low and soothing as she stroked Karaâs back and let the words carry her away, until at last her breathing became slow and even, and the subtle change in her weight against Lenaâs side let her know that she had fallen asleep.
Lena stayed like that for another few minutes, just holding Kara and stroking her back, until she was sure that she was both deeply asleep and not currently in the midst of any upsetting dreams. Then she eased herself up to a sitting position and reached for her phone.
It was almost 2am by this point, but she didnât think Alex would mind.
Lena: Are you awake?
Alex: Of course I am. Call me.
Lena: I canât, Iâm still at Karaâs
Lena: sheâs asleep but I promised I wouldnât leave her alone in case she has nightmares. So Iâm texting you.
Lena: I need to tell you what happened but I canât Lulu code it so you need to delete these texts once youâve read them
Alex: ok. Is Kara alright???
Lena: Physically sheâs fine. Emotionally though...
Lena: It was BAD Alex.
Lena: I donât think Iâve ever seen her like that. I have bruises from where she was clinging onto me just to try and ground herself in reality, and even then it was at least half an hour after she came out before she started to look like she really believed this world was the real one
Alex: Fuck
Alex: How is she now?
Lena: She seems calm now. By the time we came to bed she was acting more like herself, just exhausted. She might have some trauma to work through before sheâs really ok though
Alex: Thank you for being there for her tonight
Alex: And thank god you suggested one of us should join the dream sessions. Iâm not sure if Nia could have coped with that by herself
Lena: Did you speak to her? is she alright? I was so focused on Kara I just sent her home and told her to call you
Alex: Yeah, she called. She feels awful for what happened. I told her it wasnât her fault and we talked for a bit, but the poor girl is still seriously shaken.
Lena: Iâm not surprised, it was pretty intense. Iâll have to check in on her in the morning.
Alex: Speaking of which, are YOU ok?
Lena: Iâm fine, mostly just worried about Kara
Alex: Are you sure? You said you have bruises???
Alex: Do you think it was a returning powers doesnât-know-her-own-strength situation? Because that would at least mean something good came out of it.
Lena: I think it was a regular human strength abject terror disconnect from her surroundings situation.
Lena: Which is lucky because if she had had superstrength at that moment I would currently be in hospital getting titanium rods fitted to replace the bones I would no longer have in my forearms.
Alex: ouch
Alex: so the dream work was a total failure then
Lena: Maybe not entirely. Did Nia tell you what happened while they were in there?
Alex: as much as she could. She said once Kara went into the wall it was like she lost control â she couldnât sense her anymore, and Kara didnât seem to be able to hear her when she called. She tried to follow but the dream wouldnât let her.
Lena: Kara told me what happened after that. And I understand now what the barrier Lex built is made of.
Alex: Wait you do?! Tell me!!!
Lena: it isnât something artificial we can just remove to let the two sides come back together. If we break the barrier, weâre breaking part of Karaâs mind.
Lena: thatâs why the Q-waves gave her a nose bleed, I think
Lena: and itâs why Karaâs own mind is fighting so hard to keep away from it
Alex: WHAT IS IT???
Lena: Itâs her fear.
Lena: Lex has taken all Karaâs Kryptonian memories, and walled them off behind every terror that Kara Zor El or Supergirl ever faced. So to get the rest of her memories back she would have to overcome all of them at once
Lena: The phantom zone. The loss of her planet. Every moment of pain from every time she was poisoned with kryptonite. Every time someone she loved died or was in danger, EVERYTHING. All at once.
Alex: That sick bastard.
Alex: Lena, Kara has faced so much fear.
Lena: I know
Alex: If she knew why she needed to she might be able to do it. But how can we ever expect her to go back in there if we canât tell her why she has to?
Lena: We canât
Lena: not without finding some way to protect her from it first
Lena: that much agony all in one go could break her mind permanently
Beside her in the bed Kara stirred, a tiny frown creasing her forehead.
Lena: I have to go, but we will work on this more at the next PA meeting.
Lena: Donât forget to delete
Lena cleared the text chain quickly from her own phone, and then turned to pull Kara back into her arms, stroking her hair and murmuring âshhh darling, itâs alright, youâre safeâ, until Kara relaxed back into more restful sleep.
She was tired and feeling a little shaky herself after what had happened, whatever she had just told Alex, but Lena didnât let herself close her eyes. She stayed awake beside Kara as the hours ticked slowly by, watching for any sign of distress and soothing her back out of it whenever she seemed to be edging into nightmares, until at last the pale light of dawn began to filter in through Karaâs thin bedroom curtains, and they had officially made it through the night.
Character Profile Tag
Thanks for the tag @sarandipitywrites! Check out their OC, Paris, here!
I couldn't decide who to do for this one so I just brought up a wheel.
I got a character that I haven't really got the chance to introduce on here yet, Galatides.
Full Name: Galatides
Age: 42
Sex: Male
Species: Human (?). Over the course of Galatides' long career as a mercenary and a warrior he has made a habit of consuming potions. These potions have given him a fierce reputation, however the mutating effects that these have dealt his body may now make him technically closer to a forestfolk than a proper human.
Appearance: Galatides was once tall and handsome, with flowing hair, skin like copper, and piercing green eyes, practically pulled from the pages of an old legend. But that was long ago. While he has lost none of his musculature nor his height, his once perfect lips and jaw are now marred with burnt and scarred flesh from the hundreds of potions he has consumed. More potions can be seen hanging from his belt.
His head is bald, his hair having long since fallen out. Not even stubble remains. His eyebrows and eyelids are gone too.
If you were to reach out and touch his skin you would feel that it is hard, cracked, and leathery. He seems to burn with an unnatural heat, as if furnaces churn in his gut rather than organs. Look closely and you may occasionally see a waft of smoke trail from his lips or nostrils.
His once beautiful eyes now seem to glow, with an eerie and sickly radiance. Some say that his gaze can pierce even the most complete darkness.
Occupation: Captain of Wadikir's Mercenaries, Defender of Chibal. He once fought across the Green Sea, earning a reputation as an undefeated duellist of great strength and ferocity. Now he serves as the head of Chibal's mercenary army. His last great feat was the defeat of the Ikopeshi Pirate and Sea Lord, Hamagi.
Family: He has not children which he claims, no wife or lovers. His father is dead, his mother and siblings are far away in Korithia. He has not seen them in decades.
Pets: None.
Best friend: Another mercenary, Anikites, also a Korithian like himself,
Describe his room: Galatides's room is located in the Bidlum, the grand palace of Chibal. The room itself is quite large, bigger than the entire houses of some commoners. His bed is made from cypress, straw, goose-down, and wool. A low table sits in one corner, alongside two cushioned couches. On its surface a mixture of various items; an empty cup, various crushed herbs, and several empty vials.
Three bronze braziers light the room, crackling softly, their fire perfumed with laurel and cinnamon.
Tapestries hang on the walls showing sea beasts, gods, and monsters. Most of these are gifts from his employer, Wadikir.
A stand for his armor and spear wait in the corner beside his bed.
Several ceramic tablets are drying on the floor, painted with dancing forest spirits and Korithian warriors. Though he would never freely tell others, these are his own work.
One one shelf, Bits and pieces of life from Korithia have been preserved; an old helmet, a Korithian vase, a single doll made from what appears to be linen and human hair.
Items in his bag/purse: Potions, held in tiny ceramic vials, no larger than his pinkie finger. Only he and the plantbrew that made them know their exact functions, he hides the identity of his supplier quite jealously.
Hobbies: Drinking with Anikities, sailing, the Kishite board game "Nuhu", painting, hunting, and wrestling.
Favorite sports: Wrestling
Abilities/Talents/Powers: Galatides is an excellent warrior. His skills are bolstered by the potions that he drinks, giving him superhuman strength and reactions, among other effects.
If he had not become a warrior, it seems that he could have had a fruitful career as a musician or perhaps even a palatial artist.
He is also a surprisingly good musician, capable of playing a number of stringed instruments, though he only does so when quite intoxicated, unfortunately he has a very very high tolerance. His voice though gruff, provides an incredible bass, and any who get to hear him sing of ancient Arkodian and Korithian heroes should count themselves lucky.
His paintings are made with a surprising delicacy and show a superb level of detail. Only a select few have had the honor of seeing his pieces, and of them, only Anikities has been there to see their creation.
Relationships: The only real relationship in his life is with his "friend", Anikities. They can be seen together at most times, occasionally even sleeping in the same room. When first hired by the merchant, Wadikir, Galatides refused to join the service of the Kishite without his friend.
Fears: Losing Anikities. Being humiliated or defeated in battle.
Faults: Prideful, cold, wrathful, and he is willing to have his body fall apart and rot in order to protect his pride.
Good points: Loyal (to some), graceful, driven, surprisingly artistically talented.
What he wants more than anything else: To die undefeated and to be remembered as a great warrior. Beyond this, to spend his time with Anikities working on his painting and chatting about their past exploits.
Completely unrelated to this! Sorry I have been so inactive! I have seen your tags and asks, its just been busy and I've been tired. I'm getting ready to go on a bit of trip, so unfortunately this might be the last post for a couple days, but I'm still here and I'm fine!
one-word writing prompts, intractable, mara/eris?
Clad in thermal underlayers and the loose head scarf she wears at rest, Eris regards the Reef-purple skin-pressure suit laid out on the bunk before her in preparation for the day's mission outside the ship. Her eyes linger on its glistening glass dome helmet, boots and gloves that look almost too fashionable to be protective equipment. Next to it, a tangle of harness webbing meant to hold armor plates, supply pouches, and life support units waiting for them near the airlock of the vessel.
The elegant tech stands in contrast to the rest of the objects scattered on Eris' bunk. She didn't have much time to pack for the journey, but still managed to snag some essentials from Sanctuary. A worn field blanket, hive tablets, a leather-bound journal, dried asphodelia bound together with a string of beads, a rucksack filled with carving tools, ritual objects and mundane necessities. Visible only by its green glow, the ahamkara bone shard is nestled among the folds, and her armor lay in a crumpled heap. In the brief time they've been traveling together, Eris has managed to stake out at least this part of the ship as her own. It's comforting in its familiarity, even if it's a reminder of a place that is anything but.
"Manufactured precisely to your specifications," Mara comments, strolling into the quarters in an identical garment. It's not too different from her usual attire, Eris notes, though she lacks the usual capelette or cloak from her Dreaming City uniform, no fur ruff or badge or sash either. Combined with the tight-fitting hood that flattens out her voluminous hair, she looks distressingly bare, fragile almost, like a bird plucked clean of her plumage.Â
She idly picks up the suit. In its inert state, it's stretchy, the densely woven network of wires inside bumpy under her fingertips. It feels pleasantly sturdy despite being so light, but she still puts it down after a moment.
"I appreciate the effort, Mara, but I have ways to protect myself."Â
"And they are clever. However, I think it's prudent that your magic be spared for what lies in wait on the approach to the Pyramid."
"You underestimate the reserves of my power. It takes little more effort than breathing."
"We are entering the vacuum of space. Eris. . ." There's a pointedness to Mara's voice that pricks at her ears. She's heard this tone more on this trip than in all their years of work together, though this is the first time on the journey she's felt certain <i>Mara herself</i> is behind it. "In our joint ventures, I've always given you the freedom to operate as you see fit, as you've given me. The mission ahead is dangerous, even by our standards, and harm coming to one of us could spell doom for both. For this reason, I must insist you use the best tools available."
"How are you sure mine aren't?"
"Because mine is made with thousands of years of Awoken astronautical research."Â
"I am not one of your people." She makes a sweeping gesture toward her armor and hive accoutrements, "This is what works for me."
Their gazes lock in a tense moment of silence. Eris tries not to feel impressed at how well Mara manages to maintain eye contact despite their mismatched numbers. Her emotions are inflamed enough that conceding even this would feel like a defeat.Â
"This isn't about the suit, is it?"
Eris attempts to gather her words and fails because they aren't usually hers to say. To think about saying them at all makes her feel unlike herself, flush with an uneasy, jittery warmth. She may hide from the petty and cruel strangers of the Tower, but among her confidants she's never felt particular embarrassment about her physical condition. Had Asher not dirtied his hands with ichor helping change her bandages in the infirmary? Had Ikora not felt her horns and scales when she washed her hair early in her recovery?
So why was she hesitant to slip out of her veil and bare her face in front of Mara? Why was she self-conscious around the woman with whom she'd shared almost everything else: hope, fears, plans, secrets, even the power of life and death? At the Battle of Saturn, she thought they'd crossed the boundary between their carefully curated personae into something more vulnerable, more intimate, but perhaps she underestimated the elegant wall they'd built, mistaking secrets slid through the cracks for its fall.Â
Prompted by Eris' silence, Mara tries continuing. "If you feel shyâ"
" â I know I shouldn't be â"
"There is nothing wrong with that, but I assure you nothing you can show me will come as a shockâ"Â
"I don't want you to look at me and see the face of your killer."
Nary a ripple of surprise across her porcelain face. Instead, she takes a step closer, places her hands loose across Eris' shoulders, her touch cool but comforting.
"Beloved, I could see only you."
Eris feels no need to ask for Mara's word, her promise sealed with a feather-soft touch of lips.
