Aiyyaa: Cute Movie, Confusing Logic

Let’s talk about Sachin Kundalkar’s Aiyyaa.

Meenakshi Deshpande, an outspoken and imaginative girl from a conservative family, chases after the man of her dreams while avoiding an arranged engagement/marriage put together by her family.

I can already feel this is going to be a long post. And not in a good way.

See, here’s the synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes (which is the synopsis that pops up on Google when you do a quick search of the film).

“Meenakshi is a drama queen who falls in love with Surya, a Tamil actor. Although she is engaged to another person, she still dreams of getting married to Surya.”

So naturally, I thought this movie was a fleshed-out story about Meenakshi, who is a fangirl, chasing after an actor named Surya and they both fall in love while her parents are setting up her arranged marriage (the music videos did not help in aiding this delusion)

But I wasn’t even close. In fact, that would’ve been a bit more interesting than what the film actually delivers: cuteness, but confusion if you think too hard about the logistics.

Surya is a painter who is given a few lines at best. Also (maybe it’s because we see everything from Meenakshi’s point of view) it doesn’t seem like he’s that interested in her the entire movie until the ending. You see little hints, like him dropping his handkerchief so she could wipe her tears. But, nothing else. I think the director was trying to mimic an actual crush, but it came through for me as Meenakshi daydreaming about a man who isn’t interested (I get you, girl).

Let’s talk about the other elephant in the room: Meenakshi STALKING this man. I understand the obsession, the fake scenarios in your head, and even talking to people who know him because you’re trying to get close to the guy. But not only did she follow him to his house, she:

Interacted with his mother and lied about her actual identity

Stole a shirt from him to smell his scent without him knowing (although you later find out he did know)

Oh, and let’s not forget the detail that she followed him all the way from his house to the incense factory at the end of the movie because she was “curious about him”. I get this movie is supposed to be feminist-forward (she takes charge of her own love life instead of succumbing to an arranged marriage), but I was too distracted by her actions to acknowledge the "women taking agency over themselves" message.

Stalking someone you “like” is definitely creepy no matter what gender you are.

Aside from that, the dialogue was a bit lackluster. One of the only bright sides is Meenakshi's rant (found here). However, the rest was cringy, especially the "Main daru nahi peeta, nahi peeta, nahi peeta" and the "Main bhi nahi peeti, nahi peeti, nahi peeti" lines (I had to pause after I heard that and force myself to keep going).

The soundtrack, composed by Amit Trivedi, lives up to the plot's wackiness and was possibly one of two things that saved the film (Rani was second). But from the man that released “Navrai Majhi” (English Vinglish) and “Jhallah Wallah” (Ishaqzaade) the same year, this movie’s soundtrack underwhelms a bit for me. This was more because I only remember two songs out of the whole set and not because he made mediocre music. The songs are:

Dreamum Wakeuppam (to my South Indians, I'm sorry but it's catchy as hell)

Sava Dollar (Lavani)

The movie is 152 minutes long (2 hours and 32 minutes). If you want to watch a movie that you don’t have to think too hard about, this is it. Stream Aiyyaa on Netflix, grab a snack, and enjoy!

The makers of the Rani Mukerji-starrer "Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway" have released their latest song, "Maa Ke Dil Se", following the success of their previous beautiful melody, "Shubho Shubho". This heartwarming song has been released as a special celebration for Women's Day and is a tribute to the unconditional love that every mother has for her child.

The video features Rani Mukerji, and the lyrics, penned by Kausar Munir, beautifully portray the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child. "Maa Ke Dil Se" has been crooned by Javed Ali and Dipakshi Kalita and composed by Amit Trivedi.

- gujarati, and tbh i speak in a mix of both anyways because sometimes i can't remember the gujarati words for it lol so ig no im not more comfortable in it than english and im sad about that :(

- favourite singer (and composer) is ar rahman and there's 2-3 songs i really like, chaap tilak by namita choudhary, shubhaarambh by amit trivedi and a lot of other people, and kabhi kabhi aditi from jaane tu ya jaane na.

- i know it was a completely flop film but shandaar is so fucking hilarious😭😭 it's by karan johar and is also a spoof of a lot of recurring elementa in karan johar's movies and it's so completely stupid that you just have to laugh lmao.

- so this was when i was like 8 or 9 and my mom had allowed me to go play holi at a friend's house alone and it was the first time i'd ever played with pakka colour and when i came home my mom was horrified but my dad was just laughing. (listen i know pakka colour is bad for your skin blah blah blah but if you haven't played with pakka colour even once have you even lived??)

- definitely my cousin on my grandma's side. he's my grandma's brother's son's son. we don't text much but when we do meet we just vibe so hard.

Top 5 Music Albums in Hindi Films from 2018

1. Amit Trivedi - Manmarziyan

In a year when Amit Trivedi presented music for over 10 films, Manmarziyan is a clear winner. Consisting of 14 songs, including the unplugged version of Daryaa, this album has soul, passion, angst, and love. The film begins with the soft Grey Wala Shade, which not only sets the mood for the film, but also introduces the passionate affair of Rumi and Vicky in the heart of Amritsar. The film then transitions to F for Fyaar, which is a Punjabi rap representative of Vicky’s personality and his desire to be a ‘cool dude.’ Later, the peppy song Dhyaanchand, also shows off Vicky’s eccentricity as he dances following Rumi through the inner streets of Amritsar. Robbie’s grey shades are also represented through music, with Sherni, depicting his need to possess Rumi, and Bijlee Giregi, acting as a background to his conflicting feelings, when his trust is broken. There also exist some beautiful romantic, soothing numbers, such as Sacchi Mohabbat, Jaisi Teri Marzi, and Choonch Ladhiyan, which are used to express the growing love amongst all three characters, thus making the love triangle even more complicated. And lastly, there is the powerful and soulful Daryaa, which is the most important song of the film as it represents Rumi’s fickle emotions, which form the basis of the film. With a great quantity of songs, one would expect a few songs to be of lower quality. However, the beauty of this album is that every single song is crafted to fulfill a role in the film, hence making it the best album of the year.

2. Niladri Kumar, Joi Barua, Alif - Laila Majnu

The essence of Laila Majnu lies in its music. No tragic romance is complete without a set of heartbreaking melodies. The soundtrack of this film is unique because it is difficult to emotionally connect to it without the context of the plot and the picturization of each individual song in the vast hills of Kashmir. However, after completing the film, it is impossible to remove these soulful, melancholic melodies from the heart. The music is a supplement to the ongoing love story between Laila and Qais (Majnu) on screen, highlighting the strength and audacity of their love to withstand obstacles in the form of their family, separation, distance, and everlasting wait. Songs like Tum and Sarphiri, signify the transition from Laila’s initial curiosity to slight attraction, eventually leading to true love. On the other hand, there are Aahista and Hafiz Hafiz that focus entirely on Majnu and his transcendental craziness due to the increasing loneliness, once he has grown tired of waiting for Laila. Each and every song represents a different form of the powerful love between them, which is even more necessary when translating a classic, epic, romantic tale. There is also my favorite song of the year, the absolutely addictive O Meri Laila, which consists of classical rawness in its most bare moments, but emerges victorious through the rock-style leading stanza that is so beautifully voiced by Atif Aslam.

3. Amit Trivedi - Kedarnath

Despite having a fewer number of songs in comparison to the other albums on this list, Kedarnath, is able to provide an extremely wholesome album. It is the only one that has five or less songs and yet is still able to encompass a full range of stylistically different tracks. It includes a peppy dance number, Sweetheart, that is reminiscent of the melodic dance numbers that we have forgotten in this era of remakes and rapping. But along with that, it has two beautiful, soothing melodies and a religious track, which delves into the realm of Indian classical music. Amit Trivedi has yet again proven his versatility by providing a set of songs that are so different from one another, yet are able to come together to further enhance this film.

4. Amit Trivedi, Raftaar, Girish Nakod - Andhadhun

If you are a fan of Sriram Raghavan, you must know that he is obsessed with old Bollywood films, especially those from the 60s and 70s. His films, specifically Johnny Gaddaar and Andhadhun, have contained numerous references to older films. Therefore, while composing this soundtrack, Amit Trivedi paid homage to the classic old film songs. Song like Aap Se Milkar and Naina Da Kya Kasoor carry shades of the melodious numbers from the 60s and 70s. Naina Da Kya Kasoor specifically bears resemblance to the R.D. Burman hit song O Mere Sona from the 60s Vijay Anand film Teesri Manzil. To create balance in the album, he also includes some modern numbers such as the energetic Laila Laila, and the dark Wo Ladki, which uses a full orchestra of instruments to create a magnificent, epic effect. The best part of the music from this film is that all the songs are heavy on piano, unlike most Hindi songs, since the main character is a pianist, and the songs are picturized on him.

5. Rachita Arora, Nucleya - Mukkabaaz

Though Mukkabaaz is at its core a love story, a large part of the film is also devoted to boxing and Shravan Kumar’s passion for it. However, unlike most films dedicated to sports, this one delves into the dark side of the sports selection process. Hence, the songs are a reflection of this theme as they are both motivating, to create a driving force for Shravan’s passion, and hard-hitting, to reflect the grim state of the sports industry in India. Songs like Paintra are jarring, as is Nucleya’s signature style. On the other hand, songs like Bahut Hua Samman are there for motivation, while a song like Mushkil Hai Apna Meil Priye signifies the love between the two characters without delving away from the overall tone of the remaining songs.

SS Rajamouli who is set to come up with his magnum opus RRR, treated fans  and the music lovers with the film’s theme song Dosti. The highly anticipated film has been keeping fans on toes ever since the makers had announced the film. A massive theme song Dosti  is  now out. It grabs the attention due to its cinematography.  Ram Charan and Jr NTR make their grand entry towards the end.RRR has the pairing of  Mega Power Star Ram Charan and  young Tiger Jr NTR in the lead along with Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran and Ajay Devgn in key roles.

Jr NTR took to his twitter and shared the song link and said, “This Friendship day, witness the coming together of  two powerful opposing forces – Ramaraju and Bheem.” Composed by MM Keeravani, Dosti has the vocals by Anirudh Ravichander, Amit Trivedi, Vijay Yesudas, Hema Chandra and Yazin Nazir. These five popular  singers have sung the song in five different languages – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. For every language, a different lyricist has been roped in to pen the lyrics. Telugu song is  choreographed by Sathish Krishnan.

3) Jessica Day x Nick Miller : They're goofy and I love them.

Last song:  Howl – Florence and the Machine.  I am beginning to prepare for Halloween and was delighted to learn that the moon will be nearly full on October 31st.  Costume time!    

Last movie:  8 Mile.  I have always been meaning to see this film, and finally got around to sitting down and watching the movie that featured Lose Yourself.  I love that song.  

Currently craving: My coffee.  (Which is sitting beside me, going cold because I always get typing and forget that it’s there).  Also strangely – Top N Fill Caramel.  I haven’t had that for ages.  Now if only I could think up an excuse to bake with it…

Currently reading: Ummmm -  I’m not? When I’m in writing mode I ban myself from reading so I don’t get distracted and I have been working on my JB Week fic.  I am a person that once I start a book or story I can’t put it down. I think the last thing I read for fun was a Wikipedia page about Australian Green Tree Frogs.  There is a baby one which has taken up residency outside my back door and I am in love with him.  <3

World Music Day: Armaan Malik, Neeti Mohan, Nakash Aziz, Harshdeep Kaur & Prakriti Kakar get candid

June 21 celebrates many days together, one of them being the World Music Day. On this special occasion, we managed to get five powerhouse performers - Armaan Malik, Neeti Mohan, Nakash Aziz, Harshdeep Kaur and Prakriti Kakar for a fun interaction and a jam session!

The Bollywood singers spoke about their love for music and playback singing. When we asked them if one day is enough to celebrate music, Neeti Mohan said, "One lifetime isn't enough to celebrate music." Armaan Malik agreed to Neeti's statement and added, "Yes she said it. I agree to her!" Interestingly, when aam junta is upset or sad, they listen to music to pep up their mood. We wonder what do these singers do? "Lot of people say that singing is the best way to fight anxiety and depression. It really works. I have tried it," asserts Prakriti. The five singers along with others have collaborated on a special web series by T-Series called Mixtape which shall recreate old songs with a fresh new twist. Ask them how was the experience of working on Mixtape and pat comes the reply from Neeti, "There are many songs sung by others which we love to sing. Dua is one such song. It is beautiful. And I speak for everyone here. We may not be the original voice, but we all sing it at home. That is Mixtape for me." Quiz them if they still think playback singing is a faceless job and Prakriti states, "As singers, you lend your voice to a face. But now people are curious to know who is the voice behind the mic. So it is slowly trending." Armaan concludes by saying, "Composers don't get enough credit. They compose with all heart, but somewhere the creator of the song doesn't get the recognition and due. Dhanush on the Fakir Journey

THE EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF THE FAKIR, directed by Ken Scott starring Indian actor Dhanush, rolled in Mumbai this week. It is produced by Brio Films, Vamonos Films, M! Capital Ventures, Little Red Car Films, Impact Films, Aurora Global Media Capital, Scope Pictures, TF1 Studio and Aleph Motion Pictures.

The film is based on “The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir who got trapped in an IKEA wardrobe” by Romain Puertolas. The screen play of the film is by Puertolas and Luc Bossi (Brio films) and has a conglomeration of production houses from 3 different continents. The shooting has commenced earlier this month and is expected to be shot in Mumbai (India), Brussels (Belgium), Rome (Italy) and Paris (France).

The film is a unique bridge between India, Europe and Hollywood. It's cast reunites actors from more than 15 countries and an International Indo-French-Belgian-Italian crew to tell a universal story full of laughs and emotions.”

Starring the inimitable Dhanush in the titular role of the FAKIR, the film, as the name suggests, marks an extraordinary journey in the life of Aja aka Ajatshatru (Dhanush). After the death of his mother – the Fakir takes on a journey to track down his father – a man he never knew. The quest takes him to Paris and soon, he realizes his destination is all set to change his journey. From falling in love to brushing shoulders with a Hollywood star, to dodging hit-men and being held as a hostage in a bureaucratic war the Fakir’s life goes hilariously awry the moment he steps into Parisian soil, despite his best intentions.

 THE EXTRAORNINARY JOURNEY OF THE FAKIR also stars French actor Bérénice Bejo (known for the Oscar Winner “The Artist”), American actor Erin Moriarty (last seen in “Blood Father” with Mel Gibson)  and Somalian American actor Barkhad Abdi (“Captain Phillips”) amongst others.

The film has music by Nicolas Errera, while Amit Trivedi has also composed two hindi songs in the film. Vincent Mathias is the DOP, and the production design is by Alain-Pascal Housiaux and Patrick Dechesne, costume design is by Valerie Ranchoux and Philippe Bourgueil will be editing the film.

Be it an event dedicated to women empowerment or a women sports team winning laurels, there are some Bollywood songs that remain a constant at these celebrations. From ‘Dhaakad‘ to ‘Badal Pe Paon Hain’, these songs have become ‘women anthems’. On International Women’s Day, the creators of these tracks tell us that they aren’t surprised by the fact that these songs emerged as “forever favourites” of people across age groups, irrespective of their gender. One reason for their popularity, they say, is that these tracks aren’t preachy – instead, they are cool, peppy and relatable.

Patakha Guddi, ‘Highway’ A favourite with youngsters ‘Highway’s’ Patakha Guddi remains a favourite with the young audience. Sung by Nooran Sisters, the song is a hit even at fashion events and is one of the most played songs at Sufi nights across restaurants. In an interview, the two sisters said that out of all the songs they have sung, Patakha Guddi will always be their favourite.

Dhaakad, ‘Dangal’ ‘It is about women who don’t have to prove to anyone that they are equal’ Raftaar says that out of all the songs that he has sung, Dhaakad is the one he is most proud to be associated with. He says that it is the kind of song he always wanted to do. What makes Dhaakad special is that it doesn’t try to give a message and simply talks about “every woman who is an achiever in her own way.” Raftaar tells us, “We always hear about what one should or shouldn’t do, but I’ve never followed any rulebook. The best part about Dhaakad is that it doesn’t preach, and it boosts the morale of anyone who hears it. The song is about women who don’t have to prove to anyone that they are equal. It feels good to see that Dhaakad became the song that makes every woman proud.”

Salaam India,’ Mary Kom’ and Baadal Pe Paon Hain, ‘Chak De! India’ ‘The music reflected the spirit of these young girls who were working hard to realise their dreams’ A film that gave a new definition to women empowerment, ‘Chak De! India’ had not just one, but two amazing songs – Badal Pe Paon Hain and Ek Hockey Doongi Rakh Ke. Salim-Sulaiman, who composed the songs, say that it was challenging to compose tracks for women who were not stars or popular faces, but strong characters who represented girls from every walk of life. “The filmmaker wanted a rock and roll song and we didn’t have any reference to create it. We wanted the music to reflect the spirit of these young girls who were working hard to realise their dreams. I think what made Badal Pe Paon popular was that it had hope, it signifies the journey of these girls – they come from small towns and villages and get a chance to fly for the first time. The song had a message that resonated with every girl,” says Salim, adding that his other all-time favourite ‘women anthem’ is Salaam India from Mary Kom. “It is my favourite because I find it very inspiring,” he adds.

Aali Re: ‘No One Killed Jessica‘ ‘Aali Re’s peppiness and cool lyrics make it a hit among young audience’ ‘ Muh tod de’, ‘ halkat’, ‘ muhfat’ – it was the lyrics of Aali Re that impressed Sonu Kakkar when she was offered the song. “What makes this song popular is its spirit and energy. When Amit Trivedi approached me with this song, I was impressed with its peppy lyrics, as it says a lot about the women of today. It has an attitude. I was told that since this song is about strong, modern women, sing it with full josh. That’s what made Aali Re special. I was repeatedly reminded k i khul ke gaao. The song resonates with women of all age groups because it has a cool vibe. I think it was one of my best works because I enjoyed singing it,” she shares.
