Kayaking Tours in Maui: Explore Paradise on the Water
Tumblr media
Maui, the Valley Isle, is a dream destination for travellers seeking natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation. This Hawaiian paradise offers a multitude of outdoor activities, but one that truly stands out is kayaking. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or simply want to glide across crystal-clear waters, kayaking tours in Maui provide an unforgettable way to explore the island's stunning coastlines and rich marine life. Let's dive into what makes kayaking in Maui a must-do on your vacation itinerary.
Why Choose Kayaking in Maui?
Maui's diverse landscapes and vibrant waterscapes make it an ideal location for kayaking. Picture yourself paddling through turquoise waters, with the West Maui Mountains or Haleakalā looming in the background. Kayaking allows you to access areas that are unreachable by larger boats, giving you a more intimate experience with the ocean and its inhabitants.
One of the most exciting aspects of kayaking tours in Maui is the opportunity to encounter marine life up close. The island’s waters are home to sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and during the winter months, humpback whales. Additionally, Maui's varied coastline means there are kayaking options suitable for every skill level, from calm bays for beginners to more challenging waters for seasoned paddlers.
Popular Kayaking Spots in Maui
Maui offers numerous spots perfect for kayaking, each with its own unique features. Here are some of the top locations:
Olowalu Reef
Known as Maui's “mother reef,” Olowalu is a snorkeling and kayaking haven. The shallow waters and extensive coral gardens make it a prime spot to observe a wide range of marine life, including manta rays and reef sharks. The reef’s calm conditions are perfect for both beginners and experienced kayakers.
Makena Landing
Makena Landing is a launch point to one of Maui’s most famous snorkeling spots, Turtle Town. Here, you can kayak alongside green sea turtles in their natural habitat. The waters around Makena are generally calm, making it an excellent choice for families and less experienced paddlers.
Honolua Bay
For those seeking pristine waters and a vibrant underwater ecosystem, Honolua Bay is a must-visit. This marine preserve on Maui’s northwest coast is renowned for its clear waters and abundant marine life. The bay is best accessed by kayak, allowing you to enjoy its beauty away from the crowds.
La Perouse Bay
Located at the southern tip of Maui, La Perouse Bay is known for its dramatic lava fields and clear waters. This area offers a unique kayaking experience, with opportunities to paddle over underwater lava formations and spot pods of dolphins.
Napili Bay
Napili Bay is a picturesque spot with calm waters, making it an ideal location for beginners or those looking for a leisurely paddle. The bay’s tranquil conditions and scenic beauty make it a popular spot for families.
What to Expect on a Kayaking Tour?
When embarking on a kayaking tour in Maui, you can choose between guided and self-guided options. Guided tours are recommended for first-timers as they provide expert knowledge of the area, safety instructions, and equipment. A typical tour lasts between two to four hours and includes stops for snorkeling, exploring hidden coves, or simply enjoying the scenery.
During your tour, you’ll likely encounter a variety of marine life. Depending on the season, you might spot sea turtles, dolphins, and even humpback whales. Guides are usually knowledgeable about the local ecosystem and can point out species and features you might otherwise miss.
Kayaking Tour Providers in Maui
Choosing the right tour provider is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience. Maui boasts several top-rated kayaking tour companies, each offering unique experiences:
Hawaiian Paddle Sports: Known for their eco-friendly approach, Hawaiian Paddle Sports offers small-group tours and private lessons, focusing on sustainability and respect for the environment.
Maui Adventure Tours: This company offers tours for all skill levels, with guides who are experts in Maui's marine life and history.
South Pacific Kayaks: Offering everything from beginner to advanced tours, South Pacific Kayaks is a great choice for those looking to explore Maui’s diverse kayaking spots.
When selecting a provider, consider factors such as the experience and qualifications of the guides, the quality of the equipment, and the company’s commitment to safety.
Best Time of Year for Kayaking in Maui
Maui’s temperate climate makes it possible to kayak year-round, but certain times of the year offer better conditions and experiences. The summer months (May to October) typically bring calmer seas, which are ideal for kayaking. However, winter (November to April) is when you have the chance to witness the majestic humpback whales migrating through Maui’s waters.
If you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (April to May and September to October). These months offer pleasant weather and good kayaking conditions without the peak-season tourist rush.
Safety Tips for Kayaking in Maui
Safety should always be a priority when kayaking, especially in an ocean environment. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:
Understand Ocean Conditions: Always check the weather and ocean conditions before heading out. Avoid kayaking in high winds or rough seas, especially if you’re a beginner.
Wear a Life Jacket: Even if you’re a strong swimmer, wearing a life jacket is crucial for safety.
Guidelines for Beginners: Stick to calm waters, such as bays and sheltered areas, if you’re new to kayaking. It’s also a good idea to join a guided tour where an experienced guide can assist you.
Eco-Friendly Kayaking Practices
As beautiful as Maui is, it’s important to kayak responsibly to protect the environment. Follow these eco-friendly practices:
Leave No Trace: Carry out everything you bring in, including trash. This helps preserve the natural beauty of Maui’s coastlines.
Respect Marine Life: Keep a safe distance from wildlife, especially sea turtles and dolphins. Never touch or disturb them.
Sustainable Tourism: Support tour companies that practice sustainability and minimize their environmental impact.
What to Pack for a Kayaking Tour?
Packing the right gear is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable kayaking experience. Here’s a quick checklist:
Essential Gear: A hat, polarized sunglasses, and a rash guard or quick-drying clothing are must-haves for sun protection.
Sunscreen: Choose a reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin without harming the marine environment.
Hydration: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated during your tour.
Camera: Capture the beauty of Maui’s waters, but ensure your camera is waterproof or well-protected.
Costs of Kayaking Tours in Maui
The cost of kayaking tours in Maui varies depending on the type and duration of the tour. On average, expect to pay between $75 to $150 per person for a standard guided tour. Private tours or those with additional features, such as whale watching, can cost upwards of $200. Be sure to inquire about any additional costs, such as gear rental or transportation to the launch site.
Kayaking with Kids in Maui
Kayaking is a family-friendly activity, and many kayaking tours in Maui are suitable for children. Look for providers that offer kid-friendly tours with stable, tandem kayaks. Ensure your child is comfortable in the water and wears a properly fitting life jacket. Start with shorter tours to gauge their comfort level, and choose calm, protected waters for a safer experience.
Conclusion
Kayaking tours in Maui offer an unparalleled way to explore the island’s stunning coastline and marine life. Whether you’re paddling over coral reefs, spotting sea turtles, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the ocean, a kayaking adventure in Maui is an experience you’ll never forget. So next time you’re on the island, grab a paddle and embark on a journey across Maui’s magical waters.

Things to do in Lahaina, Maui
Tumblr media
Looking for things to do in Lahaina, Maui? “The west side is the best side”, that’s what we say here in historic Lahaina Town! Shopping, food, activities, the list goes on!
We created a go-to guide so can make your most out of your vacation to Lahaina!
Originally the capital of Hawaii from 1820-1845, historic Lahaina town was once a pit stop for whalers and now sees an estimated 80% of all tourism that comes to Maui! Lahaina’s iconic Front Street runs through the heart of Lahaina Town, connecting Lahaina Harbor, shops, restaurants and historical landmarks. Traveling to Maui is not your bargain vacation due to its desired tropical climate as a U.S. territory, but with AirBnB’s available at all time lows right now and lots of free outdoor activities you’ll find yourself easily content on this little island in the Pacific!
Lahaina is a small town with half the crime rate of Los Angeles and New York. You can walk or bike almost anywhere to shops, beaches, activities and dining, making it a go-to for Maui’s visitors!
Free Things to do in Lahaina
If you’re looking for free things to do in Lahaina, check out the Lahaina Walking Tour for a fun historical walk through along Front Street, which has been rated one of the Top 10 Greatest Streets by the American Planning Commission.
Across from the Wharf Center is the historic Banyan Tree. Planted over 100 years ago this tree is a gathering place for visitors, locals and arts and crafts fairs! If you walk toward the ocean you will find Lahaina Harbor, the busiest tourism harbor in the state!. You can check out the historic museum right under the banyan to learn more about this harbor that was once a pit-stop for whalers and sailors! The historic Pioneer Inn now houses dining and shops, as well as a photo ops with parrots and breakfast at the Inn itself. Art galleries, clothing stores and Hawaii inspired jewelry shops line this quaint little ocean front town!
Surfing is always free, you just need a board and some waves! Lahaina town fronts two popular surf spots, Breakwall and Harbor! Breakwall has a slower softer wave great for longboarding and Harbor’s quick steep drop in waves make it a great pick for shortboarders!
If you’re in Maui during Halloween, be ready for a festive night to remember! Front street hosts a Halloween bash that brings the whole island to it’s little town. Hundreds of amazing costumes, contests, live music and dining! Many restaurants along Front Street offer ocean view and oceanfront dining, here are some of our favorite places to eat in Lahaina!
Dining & Shopping
Starting at the south end of Front Street, you can walk past local shops and good eats. Paia fish market opened their Lahaina location a few years ago and specializes in fish burgers and more! Stop and check out Down the Hatch, one of our favorite places to eat fish, this bar and grill was even on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives! Down the Hatch also has live music at night and game nights! Best burgers in town can be found at Cool Cats Cafe across from the Pioneer Inn and a stop in Captain Jacks Restaurant for salads, fish and philly cheese steaks is a great option! Sunrise cafe is a quaint local breakfast cafe, nestled behind the corner ice cream shop!
At the north end of Front Street, Waikiki Brewing Co. and Tommy Bahamas Bar and Grill are new additions to our Lahaina Town Dining! Further down (maybe a drive more than a walk), behind Safeway shopping center, there is a trio of ocean front dining that are must trys!. Star Noodle, known for it’s asian fusion dishes offers outdoor dining and a contemporary setting! Honu has indoor and oceanfront outdoor dining, seafood dishes, gourmet pizza are their specialities. Mala Ocean Tavern, rated best oceanfront dining in 2019, offers a more elevated dining experience and just recently bought a delicious brunch to the table!
Do you have dietary restrictions and want a dining experience that caters to your needs? Lucky for us, Lahaina is home to a few delicious vegan restaurants! Moku Roots is our top choice, serving amazing vegan dishes made with local ingredients like coconut, kiawe flour, macadamia nuts and tons of fresh fruits and veggies. You won’t even know it’s vegan when you taste it, it’s just good, and grab a dessert on your way out! Choice Health Bar is another great veggie option, their veggie bowls, acai bowls, smoothes, soups and desserts are all made locally and with your health in mind!
Looking for dessert? Banyan Tree gelato and Lamperts Ice Cream (home of the Dole Fruit Whip) are your next stops on front street! Breakwall Shave Ice (located inside Down the Hatch Restaurant) even serves Hawaiian Shaved ice Adult Style (must be 21) and an assortment of other shaved ice desserts, acai bowls, ice coffees and smoothies!
Activities
Whale Watching in Lahaina
Whale watching is the top activity in Lahaina, Maui! Because the Maui Nui Basin is the choice spot for our humpback whale visitors, it became a protected sanctuary for whales in the 1990’s. You can whale watch from shore, your hotel or better yet, on a boat! You can find all styles of vessels to choose from! Large sailing vessels like Trilogy Excursions depart from the loading dock, while smaller rafting style boat like ours leave from Slip 17!
Snorkeling in Lahaina
You can snorkel from shore most anywhere in Lahaina! Mala Boat Ramp is our top spot to snorkel from shore in Lahaina, followed closely by Oluwalu Reef! Mala has an artificial reef made from the old boat harbor that sank into the ocean, creating an underwater home for everything from tropical fish, lots of green sea turtles, octopus and even reef sharks! Olowalu reef is one of Hawaii’s oldest and largest reefs, hosting unique pinnacle style reef structure, lots of marine life and the home to many manta rays! Snorkeling by boat is also a great adventure! Most snorkeling tours that depart from Lahaina Harbor will take you to the island of Lanai where the reef is in pristine condition, and we often see the resident spinner or bottlenose dolphins!
Fishing in Lahaina
If you’re wanting a fishing experience, best to pay for a charter where they can get you on the ones that are biting! Finest Kind and Die Hard are our top fishing company choice for Lahaina!
Luas in Lahaina
Luaus are back in action, with tasty local Hawaiian cuisine and traditional dance! Most luaus are located on a beach front location where you get to enjoy ocean views with a sit-down dinner and Hawaiian style entertainment. If you’re looking for Luaus located in Lahaina Town, Old Lahaina Luau is the go to spot! This luau is located right on front street and has an authentic styled venue with ocean front dining!
Whether you’re staying in Lahaina, or will make the short drive from Kaanapali or the day trip from Kihei or Wailea, it’s definitely worth the stop for some fun shopping, ocean activities and ono food!

Each company has booked a charter plane for their artists that will leave at varying times on the afternoon of June 1 (KST) to arrive in Hawaii on the morning (HST) of June 1. All idols will be on a plane with the other idols and staff from their own company with the exception of Unity, who will take a commercial flight from California to Hawaii due to their schedules, and Origin, who will take a private jet from London to Hawaii due to their schedules.
Attendance is considered mandatory, so if there’s a reason your muse wouldn’t be able to attend the retreat, please clear it with the admin first!
From June 1 to the morning of June 4, everyone will be staying at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa in Maui, Hawaii near the Ka'anapali North Beach (amenities, dining).
From the morning of June 4 to the very early morning of June 7, everyone will be staying at the Mailani Tower wing of The Royal Hawaiian Resort in Honolulu, Hawaii, situated on the beachfront of Waikiki Beach (amenities, dining, around Oahu).
Groups will be staying two or three to a bedroom in multi-room villas or suites and soloists will be staying in individual rooms at both locations. Room arrangements can be found HERE. For groups that are split up, the rooms would have been randomly decided by drawing lots at instruction of a manager.
Everyone will leave very early on the morning of June 7 either back to Seoul or to the location of their immediately following schedules.
Idols will be allowed to explore the islands of Maui and Oahu at their leisure, but there will also be activities specifically highlighted in activity brochures given to each attendee including hiking, surfing, boating, scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing, sky diving, and cultural and historical tours alongside mandatory events specific to the companies’ retreat that can be found below. Three nights and one afternoon of the trip have mandatory company events, but idols may explore the area the rest of the time.
Please note, managers and security are still on the clock for the entire trip to avoid scandal and sasaeng issues and will be doing their jobs instead of participating in the retreat. All idols will be told they are required to take a manager or security guard with them if leaving the hotel to an area open to the public for their safety. All currently promoting groups/soloists will have pre-recorded their music show stages before leaving for Hawaii.
Idols are allowed to post to social media about the retreat, but are advised not to post their exact public location unless they’ve already left the area to avoid fan mobbing.
Scheduled Activities Overview: (attendance is mandatory for all unless muse is injured/ill)
June 1: First Night Celebration. After a day spent settling in, idols and staff alike will be expected to attend a get together celebrating the first night of the retreat. A grill lounge with a beachfront patio bar not too far from the hotel has been rented out for the event. This is a time for breaking the ice between people who may not know each other as well. The dress code is casual and there will be music and a relaxed atmosphere.
June 2: Dinner Party. A lavish dinner in a hotel ballroom paid for directly out of the pockets of the CEOs of the three companies. Dimensions’ CEO Choi Yeongjin will not be present at the retreat for unspecified reasons but contributed his part to the cost and sends his best wishes. The dress code is semi-formal and the menu will consist of a six-course dinner specially picked by the CEOs themselves. Attendees may choose their own seating and there will be plenty of time for socializing before and after the dinner. Kim Byungchul, Bang Sunyoung, and Choi Dongwook (in place of his uncle) will give short speeches celebrating their companies and thanking their employees.
June 3: Free day/night.
June 4: Game Olympics. In the early afternoon of June 4, after settling into the second resort location, all idols are sorted into teams along with select staff members and will compete in a series of games in a large convention room at the resort as a form of team-bonding. Games include classics like trivia and charades as well as a range of team-building games. If a muse happens to be ill or injured, they’ll only participate in the games they’re able to. Teams can be found HERE. Prizes will be granted to first, second, and third place winners. Randomly generated final rankings for all teams can be found HERE.
June 5: Free day/night.
June 6: Last Night Celebration. Similar to the first night, this will be a mandatory get together to celebrate the end of the retreat and continue the good feelings of the trip. Attendees will be treated to a private traditional Hawaiian celebratory performance and a top of the line dinner menu as part of a sit-down dinner vignette show on a private lawn bordering a private stretch of beach. Once the show finishes, attendees are free to help themselves to the private beach or a nearby pool with a poolside bar as they wish. The dress code is casual clothing (optionally) over swimwear.

Snorking Tours
Tumblr media
Snorking tours are a great way to experience Hawaii's underwater beauty. Often, they feature knowledgeable guides who can teach beginners about the underwater environment. These tours can be arranged for a small group size, or they can be private. The maximum group size is twelve people, and tours include all the snorkeling gear, beginner lessons, and water for the participants. Many customers praise the guides and the attention they give to each client.
Tours operate from several harbors on Maui. Those who wish to snorkel at Molokini should consider booking a tour at sunrise or late at night. You'll be able to take in the spectacular lava arches, watch for turtles, and even enjoy a delicious breakfast and deli lunch. Your tour will also include a briefing from your crew about the local marine wildlife and the environment.
Snorkeling tours at https://www.boatingoahu.com/turtle-canyon-snorkel are great for beginners or experienced snorkelers alike. Tours typically include a boat ride to a coral reef or island and a drop-off in a shallow bay. Many people prefer to snorkel off the boat, as the crew knows where the best marine life is located.
Maui Snorkel Tours at https://www.boatingoahu.com/ also offers individualized shore-based tours to various locations. The snorkeling sites chosen will depend on the weather conditions and the location of the tour-taker's lodging. They have tour packages for everyone from beginners to experts, and will include a marine biology briefing and tips on snorkeling. The cost for a private tour is around $150 for two snorkelers, and $100 for groups of three or more.
Before you decide to book a snorkeling tour, make sure you choose one that is right for you. You'll want a tour company that has been around for a while, has trained and experienced staff, and a good safety record. If possible, opt for a small group, as this is a great way to learn more about snorkeling while having a more personalized experience. Also, look for reviews online and on social media, as companies with positive feedback are usually solid choices. You may also ask for recommendations from the concierge at your hotel.
Snorkeling tours are very popular in Southern California, and can be taken by both beginners and experienced divers. A typical tour includes a boat ride to the site where you will snorkel, and a short visit to the island. Some tours also include a short visit to nearby Millionaire's Row.
The cost of a snorkeling tour depends on how many people will be participating, and where you're staying. A typical three-hour tour will cost approximately $150 per person. This will cover two snorkelers, but for larger groups, you'll save money by splitting the cost among a few people.
An afternoon snorkeling tour is also a great option for those who don't like to get up early. A 55-foot catamaran from Blue Dolphin Charters will sail the beautiful Na Pali Coast and take you to some of the best snorkeling spots. The boat will provide a delicious lunch and breakfast along the way, as well as information about local marine life and the environment. Check out this website at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_travel for more info about vacation.

Places in Hawaii for Visit
PEARL HARBOR MUSEUM (OAHU):
Whoever sees Hawaii, destination of paradisiacal beaches and active volcanoes, cannot imagine the historical importance that the archipelago has. In 1887, the United States installed on Oahu, more specifically in the region known as Pearl Harbor, the Naval Base of Pearl Harbor. In 1941, Japan attacked American ships that were at the naval base, which contributed to World War II. Nowadays, it is a space where tourists can better understand the history and how the Hawaiian Islands were disputed by Japan.
HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK (MAUI):
The Island of Maui is home to one of Hawaii's most incredible attractions: the Haleakala Volcano. The attraction has been dormant for years, but the show is to reach the top of the volcano (it is about 3,000 meters high) and watch the sunrise over the clouds. Many tourists camp there so as not to miss the opportunity to see the day brighten.
OLOKINI (MAUI):
The Island of Maui is also much sought after by lovers of beaches, nature and paradisiacal landscapes. For those who like the sea, the tip is to visit the Molokini Sanctuary, a volcanic crater located very close to the coast of Maui. There, the main activity is diving and snorkeling. The place is so famous that it was considered the best place in the world to swim with colorful fish. Cool huh?
VOLCANO PARK (BIG ISLAND):
The Big Island is known as one of the wildest and most diverse islands in Hawaii. That's because, that's where 11 of the 13 climate zones on Earth are located! The island is home to five volcanoes, some of which are still active. This means that it is possible to see the lava spouting from the earth – a visual that is even more amazing at night, where it is possible to see the lava flowing down the huge mountains. For this, a park was created where tourists can take boat trips across the sea and see up close (but not so close) the lava meeting the sea! Contact us about Visa
CARLSMITH (BIG ISLAND):
Even the most demanding will fall in love with Carlsmith: a beach so paradisiacal that it's hard not to think that paradise is there. The waters of the sea meet the fresh water that flows down the mountain, creating a legend that whoever dives there is cured of diseases and health problems.
In addition, for those who enjoy turtles, fish and dolphins, the place is a kind of home for these animals. The tour is completed with the famous barbecue in an area close to the beach – several families do this!

Get a Tan – The Hawaiian way
In topical Hawaii, the sun can be very strong. Don’t get burned and marked as a tourist, so remember to limit exposure especially at mid-day. The best way to avoid the strongest sun is to get the gentler sun on a late afternoon or early morning sail. The Hawaiians have another secret to keep their skin hydrated and to give the perfect Hawaiian glow; coconut oil So stop at a local grocery store and pick some up. You can also get rid of those tan lines if you ask the captain to look the other way! Have a Boat Party
Nothing beats a boat party. Bring your own food and beverages, wine or beer. Use plastic and paperware, as boats and glass are not a good mix. Some of our boats can also provide chef on board to prepare a customized menu, filled with local produce and luxuries.
Discover the Hawaiian ocean
How about simply jumping off your yacht or sail boat and taking a relaxing swim? Ask your captain to anchor your boat and uncover off shore water world of Hawaii. Snorkeling in Hawaii is great exercise and also an amazing leisure activity. Our boat captains know where the best places are to snorkel in Maui, and the nicest spots to snorkel in Oahu. Add some extra fun to your swim by snorkeling in Maui. You can even an underwater camera. A snorkel tour in Maui is a great way to see aquatic life! Turtle and whale watching in Hawaii is also extremely popular in season.
Catch dinner
Charter fishing in Oahu or hiring your private charter fishing boat in Maui may be just the thing. You will have a relaxing time, and, if you get lucky, you can take back your catch for dinner at home!
Read, Write and Take Pictures and Capture the moment
Sailing or yachting, it’s the perfect time to carry your hobby with you! Bring along a couple of books, so you can lie in the sun and catch up on your reading without being disturbed. It is also a great opportunity to write. Your sailboat or yacht could be like your very own writing retreat, with the sea breeze and smell of salt water giving you inspiration for your creativity. Hawaii is also at its most stunning when viewed from off shore. As you cruise by dramatic scenery and lush tropical mountain backdrops, discover Hawaii through your camera lens and capture your holiday–it’s a fun activity as you explore a new destination. This way you can preserve the sailing experience and revisit those special moments anytime, by flicking through an album or sharing on social media for your friends to see.
Watch a Gorgeous Sunset
Hawaii has the most beautiful sunset in the world. Stand there and watch the sun meet the sea, the glorious colors and how they affect the surrounding islands and coastlines — and it is even better when you enjoy it while at sea. Don’t forget your camera! Click away before this perfect photo-op disappears!
To be out on the open sea is a playground for the senses, so what are you waiting for? Check out all of our yachts in Oahu, Hawaii and Maui, Hawaii.
