Bioluminescence occurs as a chemical reaction within the organism when excited or disturbed by movement.  It is thought that the flashes of light are a defense mechanism, meant to startle potential predators or even attract those higher up on the food chain to prey on the smaller aquatic life that feeds on dinoflagellates. Following a circadian rhythm, the bioluminescence occurs only at night which allows the dinoflagellates to essentially recharge during the day. The Mendenhall Glacier is a 12-mile-long glacier in the Mendenhall Valley, only 12 miles from downtown Juneau in southeast Alaska. The glacier originally had two names: Sitaantaagu (“Glacier Behind the Town”) and Aak’wtaaksit (“Glacier Behind the Little Lake”). Inside the glacier are the stunning blue ice caves, accessible only to those willing to kayak to the edge of the ice and then climb over the glacier.

The glacier is reportedly succumbing to effects of global warming. 

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

First discovered in the early 1800’s amidst the geysers and sulfurous bubblings of Yellowstone National Park, the record setting natural wonder has been stunning visitors for over a century. The pool is a piercing blue surrounded by rings of colour ranging from red to green. The otherworldly effect is caused by varieties of pigmented bacteria and microbes that thrive in the warm, mineral abundant waters surrounding the hot spring. Changing along with the seasons the colours fade and grow more deep depending on what type of bacteria is thriving in the weather at the time. The centre of the pool, where the water boils up from underground is so hot that the water is actually sterile. This produces a shockingly clear and bold blue colour that the spring maintains year-round. 

True to its name, this football field-sized hot spring—the largest in the United States—is lined with yellow, green, and orange rings secreted by heat-loving bacteria. In the centre is a swath of vibrant blue water, which shoots up through a crack in the Earth at a searing 170 degrees Fahrenheit. 

From Madison Junction head south towards Old Faithful. Or travel north from Old Faithful. Park in the Midway Geyser parking area, and it is a short walk uphill on the boardwalks. Parking is limited, and the boardwalks become crowded if 3 or more tour buses arrive at the same time. There is a picnic area ¼ mile north which offers parking, and there is very limited parking along the road. Use extreme caution if you park on the roadside and walk.

Seven Colored Earths in Chamarel, Mauritius

Known as “Terres des Sept Couleurs” in the original French, the Seven Coloured Earths in Mauritius is a rare geological oddity that proves brown is far from the only colour of dirt. 

Surrounded by forest and spreading out in seven distinct colours (red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow), these psychedelic dunes were formed thanks to a rare confluence of volcanic activity which brought a number of different elements together, each with their own distinct hue. The rolling bands of colour are caused by a strange phenomenon in which the different sand particles seem to miraculously settle together, creating patches of red iron or blue aluminum.

Another odd feature of the dunes is that they do not seem to erode, despite Mauritius’ heavy and frequent rains. It’s become a popular destination for visitors not just for its aesthetic allure, but also because of its mystical resilience: the dunes appear immune to erosion.

Found along the path of the Silk Road in Northwestern China’s Gansu Province, this stupefying array of colourful geology awaits those who are willing to find it. Vivid reds, oranges, and yellows stripe along the mountains in technicolor harmony with rocks allegedly shaped like animals and mythical creatures. This geological park also offers several hiking areas and scenic overlooks to fully enjoy the colour. That being said, visitors don’t need to struggle to see the rainbow rocks.

Where did the rainbow come from? The answer is not as magical as one might hope: different layers of sandstone dating back millions of years. With erosion, wind, and weather, the colourful layers were formed.

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in northern Norway

The mythical light show known as the Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis, is visible in many places, including Alaska, Iceland, Canada, and Greenland. But arguably the best place to see this natural phenomenon is northern Norway, especially near the town of Tromsø. Between September and March, when it’s dark, peep up at the sky to catch swirls of glowing green, pink, and purple, a reaction prompted by the electrical charges of gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Fly Geyser in Washoe County, Nevada

There are two geysers on the Fly Ranch property. The first was created nearly 100 years ago as part of an effort to make a part of the desert usable for farming. A well was drilled, and geothermal boiling water (200 degrees) was hit. Obviously not suitable for irrigation water, this geyser was left alone and a 10 to 12-foot calcium carbonate cone formed.

In 1964 a geothermic energy company drilled a test well at the same site. The water they struck was that same 200 degrees. Hot, but not hot enough for their purposes. The well was supposedly re-sealed, but apparently, it did not hold. The new geyser, a few hundred feet north of the original, robbed the first of its water pressure, and the cone now lies dry.

This second geyser, known as Fly Geyser, has grown substantially in the last 40 years as minerals from the geothermal water pocket deposit on the desert surface. Because there are multiple geyser spouts, this geyser has not created a cone as large as the first, but instead an ever-growing alien-looking mound. The geyser is covered with thermophilic algae, which flourishes in moist, hot environments, resulting in the multiple hues of green and red that add to its out-of-this-world appearance.

Kayaks ready...Olowalu, Maui

The quote of the day:  “I had only been here three days and had been part of two drum circles...”  For anyone who knows my feelings on hipphies, you can probably guess that this quote was not from me.  It was from an amusing single-serving friend that I caught the wrong bus with.  He was a very tolerable hippie, despite the fact that he had participated in several drum circles on a nude beach.  It is with mixed emotions that I leave Maui.  Today is my second and last day before I head to the Big Island.

Since my flight to the Big Island was in the afternoon, I only had time for one real activity, so I signed up for a kayak whale watching tour.  Luckily for me, all the other people on the tour flaked out, so I got a private tour!  Christian was my tour guide.  He was also a hippie, but again, likable.  He was your classic adventurer who had clear trail in Montana and lived in Alaska and now was a kayak tour guide in Hawaii.  Classic.

I have to say that kayak in the ocean is an amazing experience, even without whales.  I’ve done lots of canoeing, but had never kayaked, so this was a pretty sweet way to learn.  Christian didn’t hesitate to point out that I kayak like a canoe-er.  He warned me to keep my arms down or my arms would be dead in the water before I made it into open water.  touche, he was correct.  

Anyway, almost as soon as we got out into the water, we started seeing whales.  Whale season in Hawaii runs from about December through March, so I was catching the tail end of it.  As it turns out, that wasn’t a problem.  There were still plenty of whales around.  They travel down from Alaska or Siberia to Hawaii to mate and give birth before heading north again.  There is no food for he whales in Hawaii, but the warm waters are ideal for giving birth.

As we paddle out into the ocean, I could see the wter spraying out of a whales blowhole, then I heard another one.  All of a sudden on both sides of me there were the backs of humpback whales hitting the surface.  There were a few boats and some other kayakers in the area so we knew this was a good spot.  The Christian pointed out to me that a few of the whales in front of us were actually raising their heads out f the water, which is really cool to see!  This indicated that they are part of  what’s known as a competition pack.  Meaning that there was one female and several males all following her.  The whales kept lifting there heads out of the water and slapping the water to warn the other whales to back off.  It was crazy to see.  Christian estimated that there were probably 4 or 5 whales in the competition pack.  A few of the whales got really close to a group of kayakers who were squealing with what I hope was joy, or pure terror.  Although I was still probably about 100 yards from any of the whales, it felt like I was so close to them.  It’s interesting to be at their level in the water.  You could also faintly here their songs.  It kind of sounded like a distant moan.  It was so quiet on the water, that the sounds really carried.  It was very cool!

Note: I have to apologize for the severe lack of photographs of all this.  Because I have a history of tipping over in canoes (some of you know this well) I decided to not bring my camera or phone.  The tour company takes photos with a fancy camera with a giant telephoto lens and underwater camera and will email the pics to me in a few days. So there will be a very exciting update with lots of pics later!)

We finished out the tour with some snorkeling.  It’s cool to now have snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef and Hawaii.  Although they are similar, the reefs do look different.  Some of the fish are the same, lots of angel fish and damsel fish, but the reefs themselves re different.  There were lots of finger coral here and schools of little tiny blue iridescent fish.  My favorite sea creature were these giant black sea urchins, that apparently are sharp enough to draw blood.  Spooky!

All in all, an awesome experience.  As I eluded to at the beginning of the post, the only downside to my day was that in attempting to save money, I decided to tak e the bus back to my hostel.  Bad idea.  The bus system on Maui is limited and confusing.  Buses running both directions pick up and drop off at the same stop, which is counter-intuitive if you understand at all how buses work.  Also, everyone and everything are on “Island time,” so you never really understand when the bus will actually come and no one ever seems to be concerned about it, except for tourists like myself.  The goal of this trip will be to learn something from my hippie island friends and just try to CHILL OUT!  (It’s a work in progress.)

Day 4: Kayaking

The idea that activities on a holiday need to be booked early was a foreign concept to me, until I came to the US. Weeks before we left for Hawaii, Caleb had been telling me to look up the snorkeling tours. He had decided that if it was one thing we did, we would have to snorkel and see the corals and the sea turtles. So, I did. I booked us on a kayak and snorkel tour, without really understanding the geography of Maui.

Unfortunately for us, our snorkeling tour began forty minutes away from our hotel. Luckily though, we were still jet lagged and were up early. After grabbing a quick breakfast at McDonalds (the place that was closest to us,) we made our way to Wailea. As usual we passed the scenic beaches. While the beaches closer to us had children and people all over the beach, the ones closer to Wailea were filled with surfers, and old beaten up cars that seemed to have been parked there overnight. “Imagine being able to just camp out on the beach all day like you have no responsibilities,” said Caleb, and for one fleeting moment, I thought I had a new dream.

Soon, we began to pass big mansions and luxurious lawns. We were under the shade of palm trees. The roads were suddenly wider and cleaner. We were in Wailea: the area where celebrities hide out when they’re on vacation. We reached a rock beach, to see kayaks being drawn onto the rocks. We got out of the car and found our guide, Miah (short for Jeremiah.) He spoke quickly and roughly, and told us that he was postponing having surgery on his back because he didn’t want to stop kayaking. He pointed out his son, asked us a couple of questions in jest, and had us standing around utterly confused.

Finally, he led us toward the kayaks, got us to put our life jackets on, and gave us a quick, rough introduction on kayaking and snorkeling. He slowly pushed our kayaks out into the ocean, and had us jump in. We got it, and began to paddle. I was sitting in front and Caleb behind me, which meant that I was meant to keep the pace. Miah made a few jokes about how women control everything in the marriage, and so I slowed down so I could conveniently stop listening to his jokes. The panic part of my brain, however, made me keep the pace up a little so that if we came close to drowning, he could still save us.
