Driving through our cities means that we don't actually interact very much with our cities. I'm not some kooky urbanist who believes in things like "farm to table India Pale Ales" and "marked crosswalks," but I do love to go for a walk. And that's a good thing, because my cars break down often enough that I get a lot of shoe miles in, too.
Most of my city is pretty dull. Industrial yards. Long expanses of highway with nothing in between. Haunted backroads. I try to avoid these parts nowadays, even when I'm in my car, lest the inevitable failure of an electrical system means that I have to walk back through them. No, sticking to the older neighbourhoods is what I'd prefer: tiny houses, Little Free Libraries, coffee shops, plaques commemorating the site of famous serial killings. You're not just walking through there on your way to the auto parts store, you're experiencing your city in a whole new light.
Back in the day, everyone had an unreliable car, and so the city had a lot more stuff in it. Tiny little groceries to get a popsicle from when your cooling system burst. Charming gas stations to push the car into, so that you could be ripped off by the proprietor. Now, with the advances in technology, modern cars are miraculous vehicles that can run up to the half-million-km mark without you so much as giving them a decent carwash. So there's no reason to, say, stop 9.5 km into your 35km commute to work, and hoof it towards the nearest mom-and-pop shop capable of grinding you a new distributor rotor.
If you ask me, that's very depressing to think about. Life should be full of unexpected opportunities for you to meet exciting new people who aren't tow truck drivers. Maybe that dude who watches your front suspension fall off after hitting a pothole will become your best friend. You'll never know, though, because your car's control arm is bolted on all the way by robots who weren't even a little bit drunk. Sad.

Eddie Jordan
Flamboyant Formula One team boss who was also an entrepreneur and skilled deal-maker
Viewers of Netflix’s Drive to Survive have become accustomed to the modern Formula One world of enormous hi-tech teams supported by armies of corporate sponsors and marketing, media and PR specialists. Eddie Jordan, who has died aged 76 of prostate cancer, represented a previous era of buccaneering individualists who made their own luck and built their teams in their own image.
“We were johnny-come-latelies, noisy, brash, having a good time, giving the establishment two fingers,” Jordan told MotorSport magazine. “So we got lots of attention, lots of value for our sponsors, and a huge fanbase.”
Jordan Grand Prix draped Page 3 models over their cars and were the rock’n’rollers in the F1 paddock, not least because Jordan could frequently be seen flailing away behind his drumkit in his band Eddie’s Pitstop Boogie Boys (who often played at Silverstone after the British Grand Prix) or subsequently Eddie & the Robbers. He was good friends with rock stars including George Harrison, Genesis’s Mike Rutherford, Chris Rea and John Lydon, and when Led Zeppelin staged their one-off reunion at London’s O2 Arena in 2007, Eddie was there.
But he was also a brilliant entrepreneur and deal-maker. He gave Michael Schumacher his first Formula One drive, and his efforts also ensured that Jordan came fifth in the World Championship in their debut year of 1991, a remarkable achievement for a fledgling independent team. During his team’s lifespan from 1991 to 2005, he employed numerous top drivers including Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello, the 1996 world champion Damon Hill, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jean Alesi.
In 1998, Hill brought the team their first win at the Belgian Grand Prix, and Frentzen added two more the following year, helping Jordan to reach third place in the World Championship, their best performance. In 2003 Giancarlo Fisichella won the team’s final victory at Interlagos in Brazil.
Jordan was a close friend of F1’s eminence grise Bernie Ecclestone, and shared something of his deal-making instinct. In 1995 he made a small fortune by selling Irvine’s contract to Ferrari. He explained: “Irvine would come to me for free and I’d give him a three-year contract, and build him up, and build him up, and then sell him to Ferrari. He’d get 13 or 14 million and Ferrari would pay me five.” A major sponsorship deal with Benson & Hedges for the 1996 season prompted Jordan’s cars to turn yellow.
In 1998, Jordan sold half his shares to the private equity firm Warburg Pincus, then bought them back at a substantial profit. On Ecclestone’s recommendation, he sold Jordan Grand Prix to the billionaire Alex Schnaider for a reported $60m, and in 2006 the team became Midland F1 (and would subsequently become Spyker and Force India before its latest iteration as Aston Martin).
He pulled off another entrepreneurial coup in 2024, when acting as manager for Adrian Newey, arguably the greatest car designer in F1 history. He negotiated Newey’s transfer from Red Bull to Aston Martin, based at Jordan’s original Silverstone site, for a rumoured salary of £30m.
After selling his team, he had a media career as an F1 pundit, for BBC Sport’s Grand Prix programme from 2009, then for Channel 4’s F1 coverage from 2016. He presented Top Gear in 2016-18, and in 2023 he and David Coulthard launched their podcast, Formula for Success.
Eddie was born in Dublin, the son of Paddy and Eileen Jordan. His father was an accountant for the Electricity Supply Board, and his mother a housewife. He also had an elder sister, Helen. “My mother was the boss and head of the family, and I think I took a lot from her,” Eddie told the Sunday Telegraph. “We had that strong mother-and-youngest-son bond. I was driven.”
He attended Synge Street Christian Brothers school, displaying early entrepreneurial flair by dealing conkers, marbles and school textbooks, and at one point considered becoming a priest (his father’s twin sister was a senior nun with the Irish Sisters of Charity). He briefly considered dentistry but then got a job in the Bank of Ireland. In 1970, a banking strike prompted him to move to Jersey to earn money, where he not only trained in accountancy but tried go-karting, and became infatuated with it.
Back in Ireland, he pursued his karting hobby and was successful enough to win the Irish Kart Championship in 1971. He then moved up to Formula Ford (partly sponsored by a Dublin carpet shop), although he suffered a temporary setback when he broke both legs in a crash at the Mallory Park circuit in Leicestershire in 1975. He bounced back in Formula Atlantic, and won the Irish Formula Atlantic title in 1978.
He then moved to England and, now married to Marie McCarthy (a former basketball player for Ireland), tried his luck in Formula Three, but with little success. He decided to switch from driver to team owner, and formed Eddie Jordan Racing (EJR) in 1979.
The team enjoyed a standout season in F3 in 1983, when their driver Martin Brundle came a close second to the gifted Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna. “We so nearly won the championship because we psyched Senna, and he started to make mistakes,” Jordan said.
In 1987 Johnny Herbert won the British F3 title with EJR, then in 1989 EJR’s new signing, the French driver Alesi, won the F3000 title. Herbert had now entered F1 with the Benetton team, and Alesi followed suit with Tyrrell (assisted by Jordan’s sponsorship contacts with the Camel cigarette brand).
This inspired Jordan to make the leap to F1 himself. He assembled a team including the designer Gary Anderson, and attracted sponsorship from Marlboro, 7UP and the Irish government.
He signed up the drivers Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot, who racked up some solid results before Gachot was involved in a bizarre road-rage incident at Hyde Park Corner in London in which he sprayed a taxi driver with CS gas. This earned Gachot a prison sentence, and as replacement Jordan signed Schumacher for his F1 debut.
Schumacher only drove once for Jordan, at Spa in Belgium, but his performance was so sensational that he was scooped up by the Benetton team, even though Jordan apparently had a watertight contract with him. The episode highlighted the machiavellian politics lurking behind the glamorous facade of F1.
Jordan had numerous interests outside motor racing, building up a substantial property portfolio as well as being a shareholder in Celtic FC and co-owner of the London Irish Rugby Club. He had investments in gaming and entertainment businesses, and launched his own V-10 vodka and the energy drink EJ-10. He also owned several luxury yachts.
He was a patron of the child cancer charity CLIC Sargent and the youth charity the Amber Foundation. In 2012 he was appointed an honorary OBE for his services to charity and motor racing. His autobiography, An Independent Man, was published in 2007.
On Jordan’s death, Ecclestone commented: “Eddie was a special guy. Tell me which team principal today is like him. You can’t give me one because there isn’t one. They don’t make them like that now. We will never replace him in Formula One.”
He is survived by Marie and their children, Zoe, Miki, Zak and Kyle.

Rishi Nair’s first day on set as Grantchester‘s new vicar began with a bang — a scene in which he had to punch his new costar Robson Green. Not surprisingly, Nair was a bit nervous about smacking the veteran actor and original cast member. “Then you get there,” he says, “and everyone’s so lovely and makes you feel welcome that the nerves kind of go away.”
Taking over for Tom Brittney’s Will Davenport in Episode 3 of Season 9, Nair becomes the third handsome young vicar the English village has had in a decade, and the first one who wasn’t white. So while the actor may have felt at home on the popular PBS mystery series from day one, his character, Alphy Kottaram, whose parents moved to Britain from India decades earlier, has a more unfortunate introduction: He’s mistaken for a burglar by Green’s character, police detective Geordie Keating.
“We are in 1961, we’re in Grantchester, which is a very white British town,” Nair says. “It was important to me that when I came in, that was acknowledged.”
Over the season’s remaining six episodes, Alphy does face prejudice and misconceptions, but he also finds acceptance in the community and forges a connection with Geordie, who asks Alphy to assist him with his investigations, just as he did the clergyman’s two predecessors. But the newcomer wants to stick to delivering Sunday sermons, at least initially.
“At first glance Alphy doesn’t like Geordie, doesn’t want anything to do with him,” Nair previews. “But as they spend more time together, he learns that Geordie has a lot of empathy, which he assumes no police officer has.”

Robson Green and Rishi Nair, with Milburn and Dickens (Courtesy of Kudos, ITV, and MASTERPIECE)
As the season progresses, a friendship develops. “They’re both very loving to each other in a kind of masculine way of ‘I’m never going to say it to you,’” Nair previews. “But they’re there for each other, which is lovely to see between two male characters, especially in that time.”
Alphy and Geordie encounter their share of dead bodies — in a manor house, at an archaeological site — as Grantchester, now the longest-running current Masterpiece series, reaches 59 episodes. (That’s seven more than Downton Abbey had when it ended its run.) Women in the community are more than happy to get to know the handsome, single vicar, who takes off his shirt 10 minutes into his first episode. But Alphy’s appeal isn’t just skin deep.
“He’s very chilled and relaxed, but there are certain things that can really annoy him,” Nair says. “When he sees people exploiting their position or taking advantage of people, you see that steel beneath Alphy come out, which is really interesting.”
Nair, a former cast member of the British soap opera Hollyoaks, describes shooting Grantchester as a “lovely experience,” especially filming on location in the Cambridgeshire community it’s named after and working with Green. “Just being on set with Robson every day was some of the best days I’ve had filming,” Nair says. “He’s such a joy to work with, he has so many great stories. I would just sit there and listen.”
Not as chatty, but equally fun, was four-legged costar Dickens, who has been the vicarage’s pooch since he was a puppy. “I’ve never seen such a well-behaved dog. He hits marks better than I do,” Nair says with a laugh.
More challenging was driving Alphy’s red Triumph convertible. It stalled in the middle of filming a scene, a photographer caught the ensuing action and the picture — of Green and some crew members pushing the car while Nair tried to jump-start it — wound up in a British tabloid. “We found it quite funny,” he recounts.
Although Nair was raised in a Hindu family, he adds that “there’s so much of Alphy’s religion and his faith that I still resonate with. It’s his moral values that he has because of his faith.” To prep for the role, the actor went to services at the grand Liverpool Cathedral to observe how a vicar delivers a sermon and interacts with the congregation.
He also used music — including swing, Motown and Elvis Presely — to immerse himself in the era. “For the first month of filming I was just listening to music from the ’60s,” Nair says, “whether it was at the gym or whether I was driving to work or on the weekend. It’s not like I’m in a scene and I’m thinking of the song, but subconsciously I have that information in me somewhere and, hopefully, that helps.”
Although Nair and Brittney don’t interact onscreen, they were on set at the same time and got acquainted. “He gave me some great advice on how to deal with Robson when he’s hungry,” Nair teases, before adding, “And he kind of left his door open. If there’s anything I ever wanted to ask him, I feel comfortable being able to message him, which is really nice.”

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES AND STUDIES, Etsy & Google, early June 2023
Since I have been writing so much in detail about Etsy happenings lately, I didn’t have time to write my usual news summaries. Better late than never, here is what has been happening on Etsy and in the SEO world in general for the past few months.
The bad news is I am on a 2-week road trip as of June 14th, so you may not get the rest of the ecommerce, social media and other news until into July, but I will do my best to get some work done in the car each day without an internet connection.
Don't forget you can always follow me on Twitter or on LinkedIn to get more timely updates.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
Etsy sellers in the EU can opt out of Offsite Ads. In fact, even shops from Switzerland can do so. The UK is not currently included, and no one knows which EU law makes this possible. If Etsy gives you trouble when you try to opt out, keep pushing.
If you ever thought Etsy wouldn’t put your shop on payment reserve, did you know they did it to Katwise? From numerous other reports in the last month or two, Etsy is now putting more shops on reserve for very small increases in recent sales, and plenty of other bizarre reasons. One seller contacted me because the now-on-reserve shop had been empty and unused since May 2022! I’ve updated my blog post with some new details, and have a new list of potential factors. Please let me know if you have recently been put on reserve and if any of the factors - known or suspected - apply to you.
I’ve spent the past few months researching how Etsy’s seller protection plan works in practice, and yes, there are some things you can do to reduce the chance of losing money due to Etsy’s new rules.
ETSY NEWS
In a disturbing development, Etsy sellers in India now must use Etsy Labels for all domestic orders. Unfortunately, I don’t expect this will be the last country Etsy does this for, as Etsy is already making it difficult for people in other countries to mark orders as shipped. Anyone experiencing this issue can avoid it by using the app, by buying labels on sites with automatic integrations with your shop (so the order is marked shipped immediately), or by trying this tedious workaround on every order.
As I previously reported in beta, Etsy introduced a “Make an Offer” option for US vintage sellers in April.
Etsy is pulling the usual last-minute attempt at complying with new laws by having some sellers re-verify info before the INFORM Act takes effect in the US.
Etsy’s Annual Transparency Report shows that their technology is mostly flagging items that aren’t prohibited on Etsy, even after a few years of adopting this automated approach. I cover it in detail on Tumblr. If you are interested in how search is working these days, definitely read my post! This could explain some items suddenly getting no views.
Speaking of which, the latest glut of bot takedowns involved several different areas:
handmade items, often best sellers from successful shops. Some have not been successful getting the listing reinstated after several days of trying
drug paraphernalia, usually for items that aren’t even remotely drug-related
listings making medical claims, which now includes mentioning the FDA. Read the updated Medical Claims policy here.
Despite this supposed increased effort of Etsy policing the site, the counterfeit accusations against the Etsy marketplace continue to percolate through the media and blogosphere, with some noting that both counterfeit and basic reselling [Glossy; soft paywall] hurt genuine handmade and vintage sellers. If you prefer video on the Citron report, here’s one from Yahoo. Then this Washington Post article [gift link; no paywall] got a lot of attention regarding dropshipping and how you can get a lot of the same things cheaper on Alibaba; there was also an investigation in the UK that came to the same conclusion.
Etsy even addressed the negative media attention in the first quarter report, which I covered on Tumblr as usual. In case you missed it, the fourth quarter of 2022 is here.
If you use abandoned cart coupons, note that many shoppers are now receiving them within a few hours of carting your item.
Some sellers - mostly but not all in the UK - discovered they could no longer use the shipping carrier option “Other” on their listings around May 12. Listings already using this option cannot be edited or renewed with more than a quantity of 1. Etsy Support has told many of them that this is intentional, and that they will need to select listed carriers - but Etsy does not offer some of the common Royal Mail or other carrier options in their coding. This removal also prevents sellers from using extended delivery dates when the official ones are too optimistic, putting them at risk of forced refunds under the Purchase Protection Program.
Canadian sellers now get reduced Tracked Packet (US) rates for Canada Post through Etsy Labels, but there are several problems with the offer. It’s only available to people with Solutions for Small Business accounts (many sellers have commercial contracts, which are not eligible for this deal), but the labels purchased no longer count towards Solutions for Small Business tiers. That means you will eventually end up paying more for your non-US labels, and for your labels for other platforms and your website. It therefore isn’t useful for bigger shops that sell to more than the US, or sell through multiple channels. Also, it appears that you can get a lower rate at Canada Post counters, as well as through eBay as of April 27th. And even if you don’t use any of those sources, tracked packet to the US has been only marginally more expensive than small packet since September, so make sure you compare prices before opting for the untracked method.
Etsy has reintroduced its wedding registry, and included the latest wedding trends in the blog post. This should work better than the first time they did it in 2012, since Etsy now has many more items sold in multiples that can be on dozens of registries without selling out.
The old Etsy seller app was removed from app stores by May 23, and eventually it will not work any more.
As mentioned in a previous update, now that Etsy has brought on “tens of thousands” of new sellers in India, they are working on attracting buyers in the country. In India and interested in opening a shop? Etsy has a specific “how-to” page for you.
A new listing page is currently being beta tested and should be available to all sellers now, but you can opt out if you have it.
Etsy Up was held in mid-May, and all of the sessions are available online now. Most of it is rather bland advertising for Etsy, although new sellers may learn some things.
The somewhat-depressing story of how one tech writer managed to open an Etsy shop in a week with all AI-designed artwork and print on demand services. “I created a series of four retro-futuristic puzzles. The MidJourney prompt was merely this: retro-futuristic. The results were just so good that I decided to use them as-is.” Note this still took a lot of editing and time, plus skill with the AI-art generator used.
Reminder that Etsy knows it doesn’t have to keep every seller happy, just most of them [Fortune; paywall]. Josh Silverman said "...with 5.4 million sellers, no matter what you do, you’ll find 100,000 sellers that aren’t happy... We’re trying to create an ecosystem with the right incentives so most of our sellers can succeed." [my emphasis]
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
Chat bot/AI search is the SEO hot topic of 2023 so far, but the commentary varies widely, and offerings are changing almost daily. Therefore, I will provide very few articles on the topics for the foreseeable future, since they are often going to be out of date by the time you read them. A few exceptions this time around:
One author suggests that AI will change SEO by making social media and question answering more important.
Google is building a new AI search engine, while adding new AI features in the existing engine.
“If your content isn’t better than what AI can produce, it’s not worth making.”
There are currently at least 7 types of queries that Google doesn’t use AI chat to respond to. [Twitter thread]
You can use Chat GPT to build Chrome extensions that complete SEO tasks and functions [I admit I can see this sort of thing being very useful for those of use who aren’t pro coders]
This post lists 7 good sources of AI news.
Since so much has happened since my last news summary, you may want to skim through update lists to make sure you didn't miss anything. Everything important that happened with Google in February is covered here (by Search Engine Roundtable), and here is March, then here is April, and finally, May.
Google’s March Core Update saw big increases for some shopping sites, including Amazon and eBay, plus media and government sites. Etsy seems to have dropped a fair amount, but this is just one study. Poshmark was also down.
Want your images to show up in regular Google organic search (as opposed to Google Image search)? The quality of the page as well as the image itself can be important. The number of photos or images on the page may contribute.
Ecommerce SEO is both the easiest and the hardest it has ever been right now. You need to do more than just post products. [slide deck]
Google updated its advice on linking, to now include advice on anchor text (aka link text) and internal links, among other changes.
Title tags - the words that show up as your page title on Google and in the browser tab - can affect clicks beyond just keyword use.
Want to show up for Google’s featured snippets? (They’ve changed recently) You may need to edit the page in a few different ways.
Just 16 companies (and all of their subsidiaries) control most of the top-ranking pages in Google searches. This is an old study with newly-updated information.
A lot of small business owners ask me what “keyword difficulty” really means. Part of the problem is that different tools calculate it differently. [article has tips on how to approach the issue] On the same topic, don’t forget Bing’s keyword research tool when you are trying to find new keywords. There are 15 other free keyword tools in this article. [I always recommend Keywords Everywhere and TagCrowd] And here is a searchable site for all sorts of SEO tools (some are paid tools).
Google’s Search Off the Record podcast took a look at moving websites, and the possible SEO issues, with solutions. [podcast and pdf transcript] Here’s a different post with a checklist for site migrations, in case you have one coming up.

Travel Like Royalty: Luxury Agra Day Tour From Delhi
Sometimes, what starts as a basic travel idea ends up becoming a story you’ll cherish forever. That’s exactly what happened with my Luxury Agra Tour from Delhi. What I thought would be a normal road trip turned into a day full of elegance, comfort, and wonder. Every moment — from the ride to the Taj Mahal — made me feel like royalty.

Why I Chose a Luxury Tour (And You Should Too!)
Sure, I could’ve booked a normal cab or taken a bus. But I thought — why not make the journey as special as the destination? So, I booked a Luxury Agra Tour from Delhi with a private AC car, complete with leather seats and Wi-Fi. And oh, the driver? Super professional, punctual, and knew all the best routes and hidden gems. It wasn’t just a ride; it was an experience.
The Dream Drive: Delhi to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway
My car arrived sharp at 6 AM — a shining luxury sedan, clean and classy. As Delhi slowly woke up, I sat back with my favorite playlist and watched the city slip by. The Yamuna Expressway felt endless, smooth, and peaceful — almost like it was made for road trip lovers.
Halfway to Agra, we stopped for chai at a cozy highway café. Sipping hot tea, feeling the morning breeze, and seeing my luxury ride parked nearby — it all felt surreal.
Pro Tip: If you have time, try a One Day Delhi City Tour by AC Car either before or after your Agra trip. Delhi mornings are something else!
First Glimpse of the Taj Mahal: Pure Goosebumps
No photo, video, or story can prepare you for the moment you first see the Taj Mahal in person. As I walked through the gate and saw the monument slowly appear — white, glowing, timeless — I just stood still. Goosebumps. I had hired a guide, and that made all the difference.
Instead of boring facts, he shared heartfelt stories — of love, loss, and beauty — that brought the marble to life. Standing by the reflecting pool, I closed my eyes and felt the past whispering to me. Truly magical.

Agra Fort & Beyond: History at Every Turn
Agra is much more than just the Taj. Next, we visited the Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage site. The massive red walls, the echoes of royal footsteps, and the delicate carvings — every corner had a story. I found a quiet spot, leaned against the cool stone, and just breathed in the past.
Later, I wandered through Agra’s lively streets. I bought a small marble souvenir (yes, I bargained — not very well though!) And tasted the softest Agra Petha ever — sweet, juicy, unforgettable. Each time I stepped out into the sun, that cool luxury car was waiting for me like a loyal friend.
My Quick Travel Tips for a Perfect Luxury Agra Tour
Start early – Avoid traffic and crowds. Pre-book your luxury car – Best vehicles get booked fast. Stay hydrated – Especially in summer. Hire a guide at the Taj Mahal – Stories > facts. Carry cash – Small shops may not accept cards. Wear comfy shoes – You’ll walk more than you think!
Why Delhi Deserves a Day of Its Own
Before my Agra tour, I did a One Day Delhi City Tour by AC Car, and wow — what a contrast! From the chaos of Chandni Chowk to the peace at Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi gave me a taste of India’s soul. Having a private AC car made all the difference — I could explore deeply without feeling exhausted. The city felt intense, but in the comfort of my private car, it was like watching the storm from a peaceful window.
