happy valentine’s day to the santa barbara polycule!!
:shawn is definitely wearing a ridiculous heart bedazzled tshirt and buying chocolates before going in to the precinct (all specified to his lover’s tastes; lassie likes the fruit chocolates, gus likes the almond chocolates, and jules likes fudge)
:gus has taken his first real day off to be around his lovers but gets drawn into a case by shawn anyways; but there’s nowhere else he’d rather be because when his lovers are distracted he gets to admire them unabashedly. he has to make them take a break though for the date he planned weeks ago, a painting class. him and juliet have a great time but shawn and lassie bicker the whole time.
:jules made customized valentines for each of them and has glitter glue smeared on her arms (shawn deduces what she’s done but keeps it to himself because she looks so excited to distribute them) she gives them to her lovers after they solve the case and they struggle not to cry because jules was always the best at wielding words honestly.
:lassie made dinner reservations for four later in the day at a nice restaurant and when they arrive each place at the table has a customized bouquet that makes it obvious who is sitting where because they’re so personalized. shawn gets a mix of white and pink carnations, jules gets roses and babies breath and gus gets tulips that are a sort of ombré of pink and red. yes. he is still embarrassed at the outpour of affection he recieves afterward.
!!they draw cards each v-day to see who’s doing what so they don’t double up because shawn complained too much one year that he couldn’t see his bedside table because “jesus christ who needs this many flowers babe(s)”

Can I do a soft prompt not on the list ? I love your writing 😊 Buck and Eddie driving back from a zoo trip or something with Chris and Chris falling asleep in the back seat.
Going to count this under “road trip” for list checking purposes. Send me soft prompts! Find the finished ones on ao3!
Sometime in May when the end of school was weeks away but felt like eternity even to a kid who liked the place, Eddie had come home from running errands to find Buck and Chris laying out flat on the living room floor marking up a giant piece of paper. Eddie doesn’t know where they got it - it must be 18x24 at least - or why the floor was the best option for putting it to use - a mystery shortly solved by finding the remains of lunch still scattered over the kitchen table - but Eddie is careful not to step on it or any stray limb or crayon as he makes his way through to put groceries away. When anything perishable is safe someplace cold he comes back to sit between them, at the long edge of the sheet.
“What are you up to?”
“Read the paper, dad,” Chris says, exasperated. Eddie makes a face at him, and Buck tries not to laugh from his spot on the floor. The two of them share a look before Eddie puts his attention on Buck and Christopher’s work. Written at the top of the paper in chunky block letters is BIG SUMMER IDEAS, decorated by a smiling sun with cool guy shades and what Eddie assumes is a flamingo judging by the shades of pink. There’s more writing all over the page, half of it upside down because Chris is laying along the top edge. Eddie picks out BEACH DAY and GARDEN WITH PEPPA and NEW PIZZA (RESTAURANT? INVENT?) and, mirrored in both hand writings and circled twice, ZOO.
“You two aren’t sick of the zoo by now?” Eddie asks, and then raises his hands when they both look scandalized.
“Never!” Buck proclaims. “Besides, San Diego and Santa Barbara are both not that far away, we thought we’d maybe try and branch out.”
Chris nods seriously. “We need to expand our zoo repertoire,” he says, confident around the big new vocabulary word.
“Alright,” Eddie gives in, easily. “This is a big list, we gotta do all of these? I don’t know if we’ll have the time…”
Buck pushes himself up to sitting, and shrugs. “Just ideas. We were getting antsy waiting for Summer, huh?” Chris nods emphatically and Buck grins at him, before looking back at Eddie a little less sure. “Thought we’d write out some things to look forward to. We- you don’t have to do all, or any-“
“We’re definitely going to the zoo,” Chris frowns.
“Except for the zoo, of course.” He still has that look on his face, like he’s overstepped somehow, and Eddie wants to say please don’t apologize for finding a way to make Chris happy when he’s feeling down, and of course “we,” of course you’re coming with us, I haven’t the first idea how to invent new pizza.
“It’s a good list,” is what he says. “We’ll see what we can pack in there.”
That was May, and it’s the end of July now, and history books worth of things have happened in between, and Buck and Eddie’s Relationship (capital R, for Romance) is so new it’s stumbling around on doe legs. Eddie thinks they’ve spent years planting a pretty nice meadow for it to stumble around in, though, and taking his hand in public for the first time ever as they trail Chris around the Santa Barbara Zoo is easy as anything. It helps that they both start laughing - giggling, really, he’s a grown man giggling at the zoo - whenever they make eye contact. They hold hands in front of an island full of tiny little monkeys, and in a cave where you can watch penguins swim around, and by the statue of the giraffe with the crooked neck, and on the train that loops around the whole thing and gets so close to the lion enclosure that it’s almost a little frightening. They spend a fair amount of time not holding hands, too, as Buck and Chris pour over every informational plaque in the place. Eddie is perfectly content to watch them have at it and provide sunscreen reapplications and snacks, probably smiling just as sappily at his two favorite people in the world having a good time as he did at holding hands (holding hands!) with his boyfriend (boyfriend!).
They only stay at the zoo until about four, but they’d had to get up at the crack of dawn to make it up the coast in a reasonable amount of time, especially with the mess of construction Buck had to white knuckle through on the northbound 101 past Ventura. Chris is starting to wilt a little, and Eddie’s running on several cups of coffee, and even Buck has yawned once or twice by the time they’re eating an early dinner at a sandy little outdoor restaurant close to the beach outside of town. A train goes right past during the meal and all three of them stand up for a good look, Buck hefting Chris up on his back for a better vantage point. If Eddie gets distracted by watching the joy on their faces instead of the train, well, his sappiness was never going to be contained just within the walls of the zoo. He finds it a little hard to believe, sometimes, the amount of happiness he gets to experience. It jostles around inside of him like loose parts, or a bag of treasure. He’s been happy before, he’s been happy for years here in LA with the family of the 118 taking root around him, but it’s felt… more, these days, almost dizzying since he and Buck had either suddenly or finally closed the distance. It bubbles away inside of him, somewhere near Camarillo with Chris falling asleep in the back seat and pink California summer sunset light washing over them all. Buck’s got the windows rolled down just a little, to feel the air, and the radio is on low, and Eddie has been trying to leave less things unspoken, so.
“Thank you.”
Buck glances at him with a little smile, then looks back at the road. “For what?”
Eddie shrugs, because how is he supposed to encompass all of it with words? “For driving. For coming with us. For holding my hand.”
Buck’s laugh is just a soft exhale. “I should be thanking you for all that.”
“Even the driving?”
“Okay, well, the construction was bad, but yeah even the driving. You know I don’t mind it.” Buck’s smile is still small, and it feels important, suddenly, to try and get across the enormity of all this.
“Thank you for- everything, Buck. For inventing new pizza.”
Buck laughs loud, and then sheepishly checks Chris in the rear view mirror. Still sleeping. “I don’t think we’ve quite perfected it yet,” he says, quietly. “Give me a few more tries.”
Eddie shakes his head. “I don’t know how to- the time you give us, the- everything- Do you know? How happy you make us? Make me?”
Buck glances at him, twice, three times, keeps his eyes back on the road. “It feels like…” Buck is almost whispering, and gestures at his chest. “Like that little bag of rocks Chris got at the gift shop.”
Eddie laughs, folding a little closer to Buck, because a bag of treasure, they’re sharing metaphors. “Yeah. Like that.”
“I know,” Buck says, like he can’t believe it sometimes either. “You know? Me- me too?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I know." There's hardly been any complete sentences in this conversation but Eddie thinks they've never really needed words to communicate anyway. He knows. Buck knows. "We've still got 23 items on the list."
Buck laughs, and lets go of the steering wheel to grab Eddie's hand again. "Well, tomorrow's a new day. Summer's not over yet."
Eddie thinks, holding Buck's hand with Chris sleeping in the back, on the road headed home, that with each other summer is never going to end.

happy anniversary aka top ONE!!
I’d love to read a hannix headcanon or blurb. Maybe the two of them on a road trip or weekend away when they’re just starting to figure out their relationship. Feel free to change the scenario of inspiration strikes!
I kind of debated in what direction I wanted to take this little drabble, but I ultimately settled on some soft fluff! I hope you like it!
Jake never wanted this weekend to end.
He had been the one to suggest it, a short little getaway to Santa Barbara while they had some time off from work. Deep down, he had been terrified of how Phoenix was going to respond. They’d only been officially dating for about a month, and they’d never gone away together as a couple before. Part of him worried she’d think he was rushing things. The last thing in the world he wanted to do was scare her off.
Much to his pleasant surprise, however, she agreed without too much trepidation.
As simple a weekend as it was, it turned out to be the best of his life. They booked a room at a quaint bed-and-breakfast, took strolls around town and enjoyed the sights, and found some hidden gem restaurants. But it didn’t really matter what they did. Even the most ordinary parts of his day became extraordinary when he got to share them with her.
Snuggling closer to her in bed as he listened to the birds chirp outside the window of their tiny room, Jake buried his face in Phoenix’s dark hair, tightening his arm around her waist and reveling in the feeling of her soft skin pressed against his.
He had spent so many lonely nights wishing for a morning just like this one, a morning that he thought would never come. Yet there she was, lying in his arms. Everything he had ever dreamed of and more. He didn’t know how he had ever gotten so lucky.
Letting out a soft groan, Phoenix began shifting in his arms, rolling onto her back and blinking open her eyes. “Mmm, good morning,” she mumbled in a sleepy voice that made him fall even more deeply in love with her.
“Morning,” Jake grinned, smoothing her unruly hair back with one hand and pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.
They were a tangle of limbs, arms and legs all twisted together in the bedsheets as they settled into a more comfortable position, Jake leaning up on one elbow so that he could more easily gaze down at the incredible woman who he now got to call his.
The silence stretched as the two them just stared at one another, until Phoenix finally broke the quiet with an almost sheepish laugh. “Did you ever think we’d be here?” she asked in a low voice, reaching up to rake her fingers through his sandy blonde locks.
“I hoped we would be,” he replied, catching her hand in his own and bringing it to his lips so that he could press a kiss to her palm. “I’ve known for so long that this is what I wanted with you, Minx.”
“Sorry it took me a while to get on the same page,” she grinned, her eyes crinkling as she stroked his cheek with gentle fingers.
“I would have waited forever, if that’s what it took,” Jake admitted seriously, burying his face in her neck and nuzzling her skin affectionately.
“Bagman,” Phoenix whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she said it. “Jake.”
At the sound of his real name falling from her lips, he lifted his head and gazed into her dark eyes, cupping her face with one hand. He could see the emotion brewing there, and he immediately sought to soothe her. “Hey, hey,” he murmured, brushing his lips against hers.
“I love you,” she breathed against his lips, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. “I just want you to know that.”
“I do know that,” he nodded, peppering her face with kisses. “And I love you, too.”
“Thank you for planning this weekend. I’m so glad that we did it,” Phoenix told him, running a hand up and down his chest in featherlight strokes.
“Me, too,” Jake grinned. “I just wish it wasn’t almost over,” he sighed.
She looked up at him with a hint of mischief in her dark brown eyes. “We still have a few hours left before we have to check out, Bagman,” she observed.
“Oh?” he smirked, lifting an eyebrow. “Whatever will we do?”
“I have a few ideas,” Phoenix laughed, pinning him down to the bed and climbing on top of him.
Jake smiled up at the woman he adored, resting his hands on her hips. “I’m all ears, Minx.”

SATURDAY SALUTATIONS
I had the best sleep I've had since our crappy recliner in our last night in Santa Barbara. I trashed it the next morning.
I went to Walmart yesterday and looked at their memory foam pads. They are expensive here, and they didn't even have the cooling gel embedded. I came back home, found one on Amazon with the gel, and it was delivered in a few hours.
Same day delivery is a nice perk.
My back wasn't hurting this morning for the first time since we got here. It is now, the furniture here all needs replaced. But at least I can sleep again.
Last week when I got my haircut the girl brandishing the shears was quite talkative. And Chinese. She mentioned that the Chinese food here isn't that great, but there were a lot of Koreans and I should check out the Korean restaurants.
I stopped at a Korean chicken joint for lunch and was impressed. Perfectly cooked wings with a bit of a kick. Not cheap, but I'm learning that nothing here is. McDonald's has probably replaced their dollar menu with a five dollar menu.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Caturday to do.
I love you, baby. You are bestest perk of all. MWAH!
Y'all have a great weekend.

Is SoCal a good place for a honeymoon? And do you know any good places for a sate?
I think SoCal if you have never been is great or even central California. San Simeon, cambria, Big Sur, Yosemite, sequoias, or Laguna beach has some amazing places and Newport Beach. Not a fan of San Diego tbh. Obviously avoid La county. Umm Malibu and even parts of Santa Barbara are super nice. I'm assuming you meant date??? There's an awesome place in Laguna called The Ranch, best breakfast and dinner there. It's beautiful right near the beach. Um lots of cool places along the coast tbh. San Simeon/cambria area has some amazing seafood restaurants and little cottages to stay in and then inland is Paso Robles which has some of the best wineries. Then if you like the forest, sequoia area has nice cabins, hikes, etc. it depends if you want coastal vs forest.

flowers for alexander | chapter nineteen
It was a warm day there in Santa Barbara, unusually warm despite the autumn and despite the panoramic view of the ocean before them, such that Florence thought about stripping off her clothes and dipping into the cold waters beyond the shoreline. It was quite the thing to think about, especially with Alex right there before her and Francine. Eric leaned in closer to them with his hair tousled over his shoulder as if he had just gone out there and took a dive himself. She and Francine huddled down at the table as if it was cold, and yet there was nothing about the whole place around them that struck them as cold at all. She knew that being pregnant only added to the feeling of the warmth around her, and it especially didn’t help that they were with a bunch of boys, either.
Alex ran his fingers through those lush black curls, and he lifted his gaze up to Florence and Francine. The former leaned back in her chair and rested a hand on her belly, even though it would be some time before she could be able to feel even so much as a kick in there. Those eyes swept over her like the wings of a butterfly, and she could see that he was undressing her with his eyes.
She had done something to him in that airship, and now she could hardly keep his eyes off of her in the meantime.
She glanced over at Eric, who puckered his lips at her. Though things made better sense there, she could feel something there and something that she knew would clash with Alex.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Francine taking something out of her pocket. She paid no attention whatsoever to it, though, as she could feel the heat from these two boys before her.
“Are either of you guys warm at all?” Francine asked, unbeknownst to the fact that her best friend was under the spell of her husband and ex-boyfriend.
“Yeah, it is fairly warm in here,” Eric remarked, and he gave his smooth black hair a little toss back with a flick of his head: he kept his head turned to the side for a moment so Florence could see the side of his face. His skin was smooth and creamy, almost pearlescent in appearance: the glow from the morning sun made him a touch more radiant than usual, and his nose seemed straighter than usual as well. Florence thought about the first time she kissed him on the tip of his nose, which made him giggle like a young schoolboy.
He returned his gaze to her, albeit with a hooded quality to his eyes.
She knew that look. She knew that look anywhere, especially when Alex gave her the same look mere hours before. It was as if those two boys were communicating with each other and without her knowledge.
Francine cleared her throat as she fanned herself with the side of her hand, and Florence wondered if it was all intentional, especially once Francine stood up and sauntered out from under there.
“Where you going, Frankie?” Florence called after her.
“Over here,” Francine quipped, and she gestured over to the far corner of the restaurant where there was shade and the feeling of the sea breeze. She then scurried over there, and Florence knew she would have to visit the shade as well. The boys from Death Angel had shipped out of there and down to the beach, the young boys they were as they relished the California sun while it stood out from the marine layer.
Once Francine was out of sight, Florence glanced over at the two of them and the looks of mischief on their faces. Eric dropped his gaze to her breasts for a moment. Alex parted his lips at the sight of her, as if he wanted another passionate kiss from her. Her heart skipped a few beats.
A playful little smirk crossed Eric’s face once he lowered his gaze to her middle, slightly filled out, and then down to her legs. He then brought his gaze back up to her face, and Florence felt a chill run up her spine.
She had never felt tension like this with him before, such that she knew she would have to play catch-up with Francine over by the edge of the building. She stood to her feet and straightened herself out: it was right then she felt the warmth of the sun on the roof over her head and she was amazed that the three of them could even so much as breathe in there.
“Where you going?” Alex called after her.
“Going to have a li’l word with Frankie,” she replied with a slight twitch to her nose like a little rabbit.
“Gonna be talking about us?” Eric teased her.
“That’s for me to know and for you to find out, big guy,” Florence teased him right back, to which Alex jeered at that. She scurried out of there and into the warm morning sunshine laced with the cool breeze from the ocean. She reached the corner of the building where Francine had taken her spot on the grass with her arms rested upon her knees: next to her was a network of brass-plated pipes which fed into the building; Florence could hear the steam inside of there once she ducked behind the corner and stood to the right of her.
“You can cut the tension in there with a knife,” Francine sputtered.
“You’re telling me,” Florence said with a low whistle and a clasp of her hand to her head. “Those guys are so randy right now—did you see them undressing me with their eyes?”
“I thought they were gonna start screwing us right there on the grass,” Francine confessed.
“It almost feels like…” Florence started, and then she stopped as the feeling of the breeze swept over her face and neck. She closed her eyes and let her dishwater blonde hair stream behind her like the ribbons on a flagpole. She rested her hand on her belly to feel her baby inside of there, and yet she still had a few more weeks to go before she could even so much as feel something as a new life moving about.
She thought of kissing Eric. She thought of Alex as well. She thought of kissing both of them as the feeling of life welled up within her. A new life growing inside of her as the life around her fell apart and relied on hot metal and superheated water to sustain itself.
“What?” Francine asked right then, and Florence opened her eyes for a glance down at her and the quizzical look on her face. “Almost feels like what?”
“Like they know,” Florence finished. “I can’t explain it but there’s something that Eric isn’t telling me. It’s like he knows I still have feelings for Alex, and it’s like Alex still wants me but doesn’t know how to get it because—”
“It’s too bad you’re married and pregnant,” Francine filled in for her.
“Yeah, too bad.” Florence ran her hand down her belly to feel the slight curvature there. And yet, she could feel the desires within her. The growing life was giving her new life. The clock was ticking with Alex and Eric was hiding something. It was a crazy idea, but she would have to make them talk somehow, but not when they were experiencing the stress of touring with something new like airships in a hostile environment, or when there were children around for that matter.
“Did you see where the boys from Death Angel went?” she asked Francine.
“I think they’re down at the beach, Flo,” she replied. “I heard Andy say something about wanting to find shells while the tide was receding out. My guess is Mark also wants to be alone while he reads our letters on top of that.” She peered back up at her. “Why?”
“I have to do something,” Florence said. “It’s gonna get me in trouble mainly because we’re outside, but it’ll be worth it in the end, though. They both have an itch they can’t scratch, and you and I need answers. They’re probably going to blow their loads at some point, anyway.”
“Can I do anything?” Francine asked her.
“Are you willing, Frankie?”
“I can always run back to the airship and put some makeup on real quick,” Francine said. “When you were in the hospital, your mom gave me some because I wanted to try it out some more and Pearl said I looked good with a touch of mascara on.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Florence asked her, flabbergasted.
“Because things were hectic and it was the least of your concerns, too,” Francine explained with a shrug of her shoulders. “I didn’t want my best friend, who had just suffered a traumatic injury, to think about something as trivial as makeup.” She stood to her feet without the assistance of her hands on the wall behind her, and she remained right in front of her for a second. “Besides, you have this nice, sexy vibe to you, Flo. You’re pregnant, meaning you had sex. You had sex, meaning you have it in you.” She flashed her a wink, and Florence smiled at her.
“You know, I’ve often wondered how you would look with just a touch of lipstick and some mascara on,” she remarked. “You’d be a knockout, Frankie.”
Alex’s big bold laughter carried on over to them, and Florence knew that was her cue to head on over there to see them. It was crazy, but she knew that it would make them talk.
“Meet me back here?” Francine suggested.
“Deal.”
They parted ways and Florence returned to the two of them, where Alex had opened his shirt all the way and tousled his hair even more as if he had just climbed out of the shower. Eric meanwhile sat with his legs wide open and his back slouched, as if he was expecting something from her.
“There she is,” Alex quipped, and he cracked her a sweet little smile.
“What’s going on?” Florence asked.
“It’s gonna be a while before the show starts,” Eric assured her with another toss of his dark hair back from the side of his neck. “Alex is also playing around like the aspiring porn star he is, too—given we’re not too far from L.A. and everything.”
“Aspiring porn star?” Florence teased him as she set her hands behind her hips so her belly poked out.
“The Magic Man,” Alex quipped, and he stuck his fingers in his hair so those thick black tendrils lifted all the way off his neck and shoulders. It had been quite some time since she had last seen him that sexy before, and it brought a tight feeling to her nipples, even inside of her bra. “Gonna cast my spell on you.”
“On me?” Florence teased him.
“Go topless for us, baby,” Eric coaxed her.
“Topless?”
“Topless. You know. Take your top off. Take your top off and see what happens.” He showed her a smirk and a little twinkle in his brown eyes; she looked over at Alex, who bowed his head as if he was playing the role of the shy boy. But Florence knew there was nothing shy about him, however.
“Eric, we’re out in public,” she pointed out.
“Relax, no one’s paying attention,” he assured her with a little gesture of his hand to her. “Death Angel went over there somewhere, and the people in the restaurant are too far out of sight, anyway.”
“Besides, he’s your husband, you should be sexy for him,” Alex insisted as he fixed the lapels of his shirt.
“She’s got those pregnant boobs, too, Alex,” he told him in a loud enough tone for her to hear.
“Pfff, you boys,” Florence teased him, and she turned around and swayed her hips at them, followed by her hands down the full curvature of her ass. At least it was the two of them.
“Let’s see!” Eric exclaimed with glee and a patting of his hands on the arms of the chair.
“You want some of this booty, babe?” Florence teased him as she turned around all the way and ran her hands down her ass again, right in front of their faces. She then reached down and peeled off her top, and she whirled around with it slung over her shoulders like a dish towel. Eric raised his eyebrows at the sight of her breasts, full and perky and nearly bursting out of the bra cups; Alex nearly lost his balance at the sight of her, and he caught himself on his chair.
Florence set one foot up on the chair next to her, as if she was ready to dominate the two of them.
“Shit just got so hot so fast,” Alex remarked.
“How far are we from the ocean?” Florence asked them as she flicked her hair back and showed off her neck and shoulders to them.
“Not very,” Eric replied with a break in his voice. Florence glanced down at the pitcher of water on the table before them; she picked it up and poured some into the palm of her hand, and she ran her hand through her hair to slick it back. She set the pitcher down, and not for one second did she move her foot off the chair.
The two of them gaped at her as she ran her hands over the crown of her head: her breasts poked out at them and her body never seemed fuller and womanlier before. All she missed was a sexy song playing right then: she started humming “Strutter” by Kiss to herself as she brought a finger to her lips and turned her head away from them. She kept her eyesight on them, however.
She locked eyes with Alex, and then with Eric, and she moved her foot away from the chair and took her seat on Eric’s lap.
“How are you not a stripper, Florence?” Alex asked her with a slight break in his voice; she knew that look in his eyes, as well. The look that he wanted it, and yet she never could give it to him.
“Because I was always better able to work with tools instead of… you know.” She placed a hand right on Eric’s crotch. “Tools.” She leaned in closer to him and pressed her full breasts right up against his chest. He never moved as she brought her mouth to his ear and licked her lips so he could hear her.
She then leaned back and reached for Alex’s chin. He let her move in closer to his face as if she was about to kiss him: she instead lightly brushed his bottom lip and moved back away from Eric’s body. She twirled around so they could see her ass and the full shape of her hips yet again, and then she stood before them with her arms over her head to accentuate the shape of her body.
“Whoa,” the two boys breathed out in unison.
“You boys need to talk,” she commanded in a bold voice. “I’ll take both of your balls otherwise.”
“Um…” Eric could scarcely speak. Alex looked ready to pass out right there.
“Flo?” Francine’s voice floated over to them, and Florence turned her head towards her there on the right entry. Francine showed her a smile and gestured for her to join her.
“Right now?” Florence asked her, and she nodded.
“I’ll see you two—soon.” She tapped the tips of her index fingers on the tips of Alex and Eric’s noses at the same time, and then she padded after Francine with her top in hand. Indeed, she had tracked down Rob and Mark, and the two of them awaited them together at that far corner once again.
All they had was time.

The Cutest Little Lunch Spot by the Beach in Santa Barbara
On our three and a half hour drive from LA to Pismo Beach, we stopped halfway to eat lunch at the cutest little cafe that was RIGHT ON the beach.
The Shoreline Cafe came highly recommended by the Visit California team, and we’re so glad we took their suggestion. The entire place felt like a breath of fresh air, and we couldn’t believe we would be having lunch this close to the ocean. California really is a dreamy place, isn’t it?
The Visit CA team described The Shoreline Cafe as an “Eco-minded eatery serving Mexican & seafood dishes, with beachfront tables right in the sand.”
Nailed it!
Unfortunately, when we got there, the tables by the beach were filled up, so we ate under the tent on the patio, which actually turned out to be just fine. We had a great view of the ocean in the background and were kept warm from the heaters underneath the benches. It was a chilly, windy day!
And the food! I got a burger with the best fries, PJ got fish tacos (SO GOOD), and the kids got burgers and quesadillas and fish and chips (Riah’s favorite right now). Everything tasted fresh and delicious, and we all left feeling full and satisfied.
Directly next to the restaurant is the perfect picture spot. Highly recommend finishing your meal with a snap by the beach!!

Seville was the first stop on our trip to Spain and Italy. We stayed right in the downtown core in a lovely boutique hotel that served afternoon tea and a lovely buffet breakfast each morning.Back home, I have walked into so many homes where there is an elaborately ornate staircase design that often looks totally out of place. Now I know where the design was inspired. And it fits right in here. Along with the tile after one of my followers on Instagram noted “There’s no subway tile Maria”.So that’s what inspired this post. Which was easy to write because I took so many photos of all the tile work.I know many of you, who are longtime readers, might fall off your chair or drop your morning coffee but here is where decorative tile has a place:This was a doorway in the reception area of the hotel:Here’s the staircase (below):The first night, we had dinner in a nearby restaurant. I liked the way the muted red encaustic tile related to the bricks on the same wall (below):And it also worked well with the black and white tile floors:This was the backsplash tile in the breakfast room, back in the hotel (below):This was the floor in the Seville Cathedral nearby (below):Then we toured the Real Alcazar of Seville, castle and gardens. Gorgeous tiles everywhere (below): When does this kind of tile work back home? In context with a Spanish/Mediterranean style home, with an exterior that possibly looks like this:Image sourceAn entry staircase with iron railings ornate or not (below):Centsational StyleWood beamed ceilings, ornate, spanish style pendants, black, arched windows, all belong in a house with this colourful tile (below):image sourceYou could also design a terra cotta floor with a turquoise kitchen (below):Image sourceIn this Spanish kitchen with the beams in the ceiling and curved plaster hood fan, I could even live with the blue backsplash because it’s been repeated in the plates and tile underneath the window.Image sourcePerhaps your styling might look like this with the Spanish style wall sconce as well:Image sourceIn a Spanish style home, your powder room could look like this (below). Notice the arched doorway and perfect light fixture.Image sourceI love this fireplace design (below). So classic and timeless. Again, notice the beams and the arched french doors. The beautiful outdoor fireplace too with the iron gate.image sourceIt’s rare that I think a black leather sofa looks good but here in this more neutral ‘Spanish inspired’ living room, it works. Because there’s not too much black to make it heavy and masculine (below):image sourceWhat I have seen all too often is people will go on a trip to Europe and fall in love with a particular style and when they get home they start adding these random design elements that in no way work with the existing style of their home. That’s where random arches that have no place suddenly appear, or the busy, ornate staircase railing I mentioned at the beginning of this post or random rows of tile on a staircase kick that in no way belongs.Decorative tile has a place. And that place is definitely not as a random strip in your kitchen backsplash or shower surround. At least if you’re going to introduce accent tile, go big or go home, (like the bathroom image above) but don’t just install bits and pieces of it. Decorative tile is like a strong wall colour. If you’ve decided to paint a room red, go for it, don’t just paint it on a single wall, that rarely works.Related post: A New Way to Design Accent Tile: Ceramic ArchitectureHere are a couple more images once we arrived in Barcelona: Here I am sitting outside at dinner in a Tapas restaurant in Seville:The sidewalks in Seville were mostly concrete in a hex shape! Isn’t that incredible? You can see it behind me too in the photo above.Hexagonal concrete tile in SevilleYou’ll notice white walls are big in Spanish design. If this is the stye of your home and you need to choose the right white, download my ebook, White is Complicated; A Decorators Guide to Choosing the Right White, here. Or take advantage of our eDesign services here, to find your perfect paint colour. We fly into Naples tomorrow and our first stop on our Amalfi Coast tour is Capri Island! ⸻ MILO VENTIMIGLIA. HE/HIM / have you ever heard of DREAMING WITH A BROKEN HEART by john mayer, well, it describes MARCO RICCI to a tee! the 43 year old, and OWNER AND HEAD CHEF AT RICCI’S was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say HE is more untrusting or more DETERMINED instead? anyway, they remind me of early morning wake-ups and late nights with a glass of wine, careful precision, an empty bed the sheets already cold, worn in leather jackets and sneaking a cigarette out back in the freezing cold maybe you’ll bump into them soon!
time in notting hill ; 17 years (& 6 months in 1997)
tw: cancer, death
ABOUT.
Name: Marco Andrea Ricci Age: Forty-three DoB: December 31st 1979 Occupation: Owner and Head Chef at Ricci’s Sexual/romantic orientation: Bisexual/biromantic Birthplace: Santa Barbara, California Current Location: Notting Hill, London, UK Time in Notting Hill: 6 months in 1997, returned March 2006
Born and raised in Santa Barbara to a very Italian father and a not so Italian mother.
His entire family was completely obsessed with food, that’s literally how his parents met.
Marco, much to his father’s dismay, wasn’t interested when he was a kid and was in love with the ocean.
He spent every day on the beach, started surfing as soon as he was old enough to, and took a keen interest in the local marine life.
His family up and moved to London 6 months before his high school graduation and opened a restaurant in Little Italy. To say Marco was pissed was an understatement. He basically refused to make an effort and got to know literally no one during that time.
Headed back to the US and went to California State to study marine biology. Some bitch broke his heart while he was there and he’s had commitment issues ever since.
Next was San Diego and a job at Seaworld for 5 years, which is when he basically became Henry Roth from 50 First Dates.
Got called back to London by his mom to take over the running of the family restaurant ‘cause his dad was sick and his siblings were too young to. Didn’t want to but couldn’t say no to the most important woman in his life sobbing down the phone. Did that for around 6 months.
Took a job at the Sea Life London Aquarium .
Realised he actually was interested in cooking after all and his dad basically became his mentor for several years. He did some business management courses at a local college while his dad was teaching him everything he knew, fully intent on opening his own place.
In around 2014 he opened Ricci’s in Notting Hill, a high end Italian restaurant, and basically put his entire life into the place.
Attempted and failed rather epicly to have a relationship again during a visit to see family in Italy, so gave up again pretty quickly.
In 2018 Ricci’s was awarded a Michelin star.
Early 2019 his dad got sick again, but this time there was nothing that could be done. Cancer, caught much too late that resulted in his death around 8 months later.
Marco’s currently trying to put the whole family back together again… while working himself into the ground because he doesn’t know how to do anything else. He’s been determined to earn another star, but family issues are definitely getting in the way of any kind of momentum to work toward that.

fire in san bernardino from the plane home last night. i chose the window seat for the first time in a while. i don’t know when i became claustrophobic, but i sit in the aisle of almost every flight i take now. i sat in the window seat, sacramento to ontario, after a four hour layover that turned into eight, and looked at the state that raised me all the way home. past the bay, the memories i have with my best friends there, past santa barbara, the misery and pain i felt for years there, i wondered if a certain small patch of light was isla vista, and all around the ie in a big u turn to get back to the airport. for a while i could tell if we were flying over la or ventura or san bernardino, but when i noticed the plane getting lower i knew we were over the foothills. i saw the freeway exits where the 10 meets the 15. i saw what i think was cajon pass. the never ending expanse of concrete that raised me punctuated by pitch black foothills. all the way down the state i saw perfect grids of light, some with windy streets of what i can only imagine are suburban tract homes inside each square of the grid. i stared at fresno, a huge, often forgotten, city and wondered what went on down there. i looked for downtown la, but didn’t spot it. i think by the time i thought we were in la we were already past. i love this state and i love the continuous sprawl of of light grids that smother southern california. i left oregon, a state i used to wish i lived in for the beauty of its omnipresent green, and felt the warmth of those lights that i used to disrespect. do we all feel a need to push away our roots at some point in life? maybe. it depends. i think people from the ie probably do. fuck it. i think of all the other possibilities of where i could have grown into the person i am today and im grateful for this corner of california, of america, of the world. it’s beautiful to me. the strip malls and industrial parks aren’t easy on the eyes, but the people who make up this corner of the world, the restaurants i grew up going to, my friends, the movie theaters, the in n outs, the parks, the mountains, i feel lucky to know. seeing it from above always reminds me of that, nowadays. i woke up this afternoon and saw the smoke from my bedroom window, coming from the far side of the mountain. over the hours it dissipated from a dense cloud to a haze. it was hazy all through socal today, no chance of seeing the skyline on the bridge. i fucking love this place, and hate it, but i never feel indifferent to it, which is how i know it matters to me, to who i am, past, present, and future.

Sea Otter Heaven, Morro Bay (No. 1)
The California sea otter (Enhydra lutris) has been on the endangered species list since 1977, but it is starting to make a fierce comeback. Populations from San Mateo all the way down to Santa Barbara County are on the rise after major conservation efforts.
Morro Bay is one of the best places to see this incredible animal up close and personal. The bay is located next to a system of estuaries, which helped to create a sand barrier around the inlet of the bay. This natural structure serves as a break, keeping the waters in the bay calm and protected. It is a perfect habitat for the sea otter, which spends much of its time floating on its back. Since sea otters do not have a blubber layer like other marine mammals, they have to rely on two layers of dense fur and the heat of the sun to stay warm.
A particularly good spot to see the Morro Bay sea otters is within the area outlined by the T-dock located behind The Great American Fish Company. Park in the restaurant parking lot, which is available for public use and has ample parking, and walk out toward the water. Once on the boardwalk you can already see the otters hanging out in their favorite spot. For the best sea otter viewing, walk out onto the T-dock for an up close and unforgettable experience. Sea otters can be found here year round, but they are most enjoyable to watch when the sun is shining.

Collaborating with his wife, Cathy, a seasoned wine and hospitality expert, they’ve crafted a culinary haven that embraces sophistication without losing its sense of fun. Uniquely delightful features include an Aperol Spritz cart offering playful variations of the classic aperitivo. Puck’s culinary journey draws inspiration from a multitude of countries, including Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore, and Mongolia. The diverse menu spans from exquisite sashimi to the flavour-packed **Red Thai Curry with Shrimp**, sea bream, and lemongrass-coconut broth, ensuring a gastronomic experience that transcends boundaries. Camphor Chefs Max Boonthanakit and Lijo George crossed paths in Bangkok while working at Blue by Alain Ducasse. Their Michelin-starred restaurant in Los Angeles’ vibrant Arts District reflects Ducasse’s influence, blending French techniques with South Asian flavours. The menu eschews seasonality, embracing luxuriously timeless preparations. Dishes such as lentils and lamb showcase hints of cumin and cardamom, while seared beef tenderloin bathes in a Cognac cream sauce infused with peppercorn. The sleek, modern backdrop of the stark white dining room, accented by navy banquettes, complements the chefs’ contemporary creations. Providence Led by the award-winning chef Michael Cimarusti, this two-Michelin-starred fine-dining establishment stands out as perhaps the premier seafood destination in Los Angeles. Cimarusti meticulously sources sustainable seafood from American waters, transforming these premium ingredients into both artful and delectable dishes. While the menu undergoes frequent changes, you might encounter delicacies such as gently cooked Pacific oysters adorned with Champagne butter and caviar or salt-roasted Santa Barbara spot prawns. Although the tasting menus are priced at $295 per person, Providence distinguishes itself by offering a less formal and more relaxed ambiance compared to typical fine-dining establishments. AldamaNestled in the vicinity of the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn, this trendy restaurant offers a style of ambitious Mexican cuisine more commonly associated with Mexico City than with New York. The ambiance successfully combines modernity with a touch of rustic charm and sultriness. Wooden tables, chairs featuring basket-like woven seats, mezcal served in clay copitas, and Latin American music collectively create a distinctive atmosphere. Among the must-try dishes are the vegan mole negro, daikon tostadas, and taco de trompo, featuring pork belly, flank steak, adobo, and pineapple-serrano gel on an heirloom corn tortilla. Atelier CrennFor numerous individuals, dining at Atelier Crenn is considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience, making it worth the journey to San Francisco. Renowned chef and proprietor Dominique Crenn made history by becoming the first two- and then three-Michelin-starred female chef in the U.S. Now, Crenn utilizes her influential position to advocate for sustainability. Atelier Crenn holds the distinction of being the first restaurant in the U.S. to achieve certification as plastic-free. Additionally, the establishment recently made the decision to eliminate meat entirely, citing its detrimental impact on the environment. As a result, the restaurant now exclusively offers pescatarian tasting menus.
Le BernardinEnumerating the numerous awards and accolades bestowed upon this iconic New York City restaurant since its inception in 1986 would be an impossible task. Chef Eric Ripert has diligently ensured the consistently superb quality of the menu for nearly 30 years, garnering three Michelin stars as a testament. The primary focus at Le Bernardin is on seafood, although there are a few meat dishes and a vegetarian tasting menu available. Opting for delicate scallop carpaccio with basil julienne or pan-roasted dover sole with green olives, toasted almonds, and aged sherry wine emulsion is a far more enticing choice than ordering fillet mignon when dining at Le Bernardin. Zou Zou’sA relatively recent addition to New York City’s vibrant restaurant scene, this glamorous establishment situated inside the Pendry Manhattan West provides a compelling reason to venture to Hudson Yards. Quality Branded, the esteemed hospitality group responsible for Don Angie and Quality Meats, has successfully curated an exceptional Eastern Mediterranean restaurant.
