A lawsuit filed Wednesday against Meta argues that US law requires the company to let people use unofficial add-ons to gain more control over their social feeds.
It’s the latest in a series of disputes in which the company has tussled with researchers and developers over tools that give users extra privacy options or that collect research data. It could clear the way for researchers to release add-ons that aid research into how the algorithms on social platforms affect their users, and it could give people more control over the algorithms that shape their lives.
The suit was filed by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University on behalf of researcher Ethan Zuckerman, an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts—Amherst. It attempts to take a federal law that has generally shielded social networks and use it as a tool forcing transparency.
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is best known for allowing social media companies to evade legal liability for content on their platforms. Zuckerman’s suit argues that one of its subsections gives users the right to control how they access the internet, and the tools they use to do so.
“Section 230 (c) (2) (b) is quite explicit about libraries, parents, and others having the ability to control obscene or other unwanted content on the internet,” says Zuckerman. “I actually think that anticipates having control over a social network like Facebook, having this ability to sort of say, ‘We want to be able to opt out of the algorithm.’”
Zuckerman’s suit is aimed at preventing Facebook from blocking a new browser extension for Facebook that he is working on called Unfollow Everything 2.0. It would allow users to easily “unfollow” friends, groups, and pages on the service, meaning that updates from them no longer appear in the user’s newsfeed.
Zuckerman says that this would provide users the power to tune or effectively disable Facebook’s engagement-driven feed. Users can technically do this without the tool, but only by unfollowing each friend, group, and page individually.
There’s good reason to think Meta might make changes to Facebook to block Zuckerman’s tool after it is released. He says he won’t launch it without a ruling on his suit. In 2020, the company argued that the browser Friendly, which had let users search and reorder their Facebook news feeds as well as block ads and trackers, violated its terms of service and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. In 2021, Meta permanently banned Louis Barclay, a British developer who had created a tool called Unfollow Everything, which Zuckerman’s add-on is named after.
“I still remember the feeling of unfollowing everything for the first time. It was near-miraculous. I had lost nothing, since I could still see my favorite friends and groups by going to them directly,” Barclay wrote for Slate at the time. “But I had gained a staggering amount of control. I was no longer tempted to scroll down an infinite feed of content. The time I spent on Facebook decreased dramatically.”
The same year, Meta kicked off from its platform some New York University researchers who had created a tool that monitored the political ads people saw on Facebook. Zuckerman is adding a feature to Unfollow Everything 2.0 that allows people to donate data from their use of the tool to his research project. He hopes to use the data to investigate whether users of his add-on who cleanse their feeds end up, like Barclay, using Facebook less.
Sophia Cope, staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group, says that the core parts of Section 230 related to platforms’ liability for content posted by users have been clarified through potentially thousands of cases. But few have specifically dealt with the part of the law Zuckerman’s suit seeks to leverage.
“There isn’t that much case law on that section of the law, so it will be interesting to see how a judge breaks it down,” says Cope. Zuckerman is a member of the EFF’s board of advisers.
John Morris, a principal at the Internet Society, a nonprofit that promotes open development of the internet, says that, to his knowledge, Zuckerman’s strategy “hasn’t been used before, in terms of using Section 230 to grant affirmative rights to users,” noting that a judge would likely take that claim seriously.
Meta has previously suggested that allowing add-ons that modify how people use its services raises security and privacy concerns. But Daphne Keller, director of the Program on Platform Regulation at Stanford's Cyber Policy Center, says that Zuckerman’s tool may be able to fairly push back on such an accusation.“The main problem with tools that give users more control over content moderation on existing platforms often has to do with privacy,” she says. “But if all this does is unfollow specified accounts, I would not expect that problem to arise here."
Even if a tool like Unfollow Everything 2.0 didn’t compromise users’ privacy, Meta might still be able to argue that it violates the company’s terms of service, as it did in Barclay’s case.
“Given Meta’s history, I could see why he would want a preemptive judgment,” says Cope. “He’d be immunized against any civil claim brought against him by Meta.”
And though Zuckerman says he would not be surprised if it takes years for his case to wind its way through the courts, he believes it’s important. “This feels like a particularly compelling case to do at a moment where people are really concerned about the power of algorithms,” he says.

Happy Jiara Week! @jiaraweek This could fit under protective, one bed and AU but I was also inspired by the Night Agent when I wrote this. So, fusion? Take your pick ; )
Kiara witnesses a crime and needs to be placed in protective custody, she can’t think of anything worse than being held prisoner against her will until she meets the guy who’s in charge of her security detail. Turns out she knows the idiot. Intimately.  
State of Grace
Route 95 - Virginia
Kiara tipped her head back and rubbed her temples, attempting to relieve the painful headache. It didn’t help that she’d been sitting in this car for the past few hours, driving along the interstate somewhere in Virginia with no idea of her final destination. Apparently, that was all part of the deal. 
She sneaked a look at the driver, his eyes trained on the road. He was also part of the deal, unfortunately.
It all happened in the blur of one night.
One minute she was walking through the almost empty parking garage after a late night working, the next she was cowering behind a car as a hail of gunfire erupted. The three assailants only stopped shooting when the other person fell to the floor, dead from the gunshot wounds he’d sustained.
In her panic, Kiara let out a frightened scream only drawing their attention to her presence and location. It wasn’t the smartest thing she’d ever done but she’d also never seen someone murdered right in front of her either. 
She could feel the adrenaline pumping through her veins and it took all her remaining energy to run back towards the lifts, a few stray bullets flying her way as they spotted her. She’d never felt so relieved when the lift doors closed and she was able to swipe her security pass and ascend all the way to level forty-three. 
Kiara punched the screen on her cell desperate to call the police but realised there was no service. What if they followed her upstairs? It was only when she reached the floor that she was able to dial 911 which connected her to the police.
She was safe. Well, that’s what she thought until she found out the truth. Not only had she interrupted a drug deal gone wrong but the assailants were part of the biggest syndicate in the United States with extreme reach and power, especially when it came to protecting its activities. The FBI and DEA had been monitoring its activities for years without much traction but with Kiara’s testimony, they could implicate its leader and put him and his network of associates away.
Within hours she’d been shuttled to a non-descript motel apparently for her own protection, although Kiara figured it was more about solidifying their case. She’d had a brief meeting with two plain-clothed officers who confirmed she was being moved to an undisclosed location with someone well-trusted in their organisation to transport her there.
She’d been hysterical, begging for further information and to speak to her parents and friends, all of which was denied as they bundled her into the car with her supposed protector. 
She’d faltered immediately, wondering whether she should disclose the fact she knew him. Intimately, if she was being specific.  
Or whether it was best to leave things unsaid much like the status of their past relationship.

Catfishing is a deceptive activity in which a person creates a fictional persona or fake identity on a social networking service, usually targeting a specific victim.
Summary:
Felicity knows she’s being catfished as the guy behind the screen is using pictures of a guy who is known to be dead. Oliver finding himself using social media to connect to a girl who seems interesting while using his real image knowing everyone thinks him dead. She doesn’t call him out and he doesn’t own up to be the guy who really isn’t dead. Their online chats are innocent enough… that is until a close ally to Oliver calls him out when a picture of a spunky Felicity is found.

Chapter 1 Oliver’s secret
Oliver’s name is being called out. He’s in his own head and hasn’t heard the voice calling out for him. Instead…
A hidden photo that Oliver has had for a few years before his return to Starling City is clenched tightly. A photo of a girl that amazingly helped him in some tough times unlike the photo of his ex-girlfriend who brought guilt of things left undone.
Retrieving it from a page in his father’s book of names. He makes sure to hide Laurel’s image as Oliver doesn’t even glance at it placing it back within the pages. In purposely not glancing at that old image that brings a pull in his chest to think the sister of an old flame was lost like him. To find darkness and somehow return in different ways back home.
In the last few months since this lost sister of a woman he’s tried to make amends with is back. They’ve rekindled a relationship of sorts. Sara knows him enough. They have an understanding. Both seeking some comfort in each other. Otherwise, he feels like he isn’t worthy of any other companionship.
Oliver’s eyes scanning the simple photo from an array of pictures username SmokeNFox sent him it was this particular one he needed to print out. Glad he was able to find a printer back when he required it. A crack of a small smile graces his face as he recalls tiptoeing around the makeshift A.R.G.U.S. base to download from the social site to get this snapshot of an incredibly hot girl who texted some very outrageous things. Her pauses in conversation to vent how she can’t believe she wrote what she wrote. The sincerity not lost on him. He may have not heard her voice until his stint in Russia when they reconnected online again.
Oliver mentally documented her voice. Not in his wildest dreams would he think he’d hear it down eighteen flights of stairs from where Walter Steele mentioned Felicity Smoak would be someone to talk about electronics Oliver needed fixed.
SmokeNFox was at Queen Consolidated and to behold Felicity in person was… is the most incredible surprise the universe could ever throw at him. Reaching out to Ms. Smoak was no hardship at all. Her energetic personality ate him up alive. Trying to be aloof to her charm gets harder and harder and it irks him that John Diggle can read him out like that every single time.
At least John has no clue about his true first time he interacted with Felicity “SmokeNFox” Smoak.
Glimpsing at a face that brought a levity in his past journeys back to where he is now. After convincing Maseo in Hong Kong that he would not continue to jeopardize this man’s family. He got to sit down with a laptop which of course was being monitored but it was nice to have some technology at his fingertips. After the usual thing on checking up on his mother and sister and even Tommy. Since the whole ordeal of almost having his best friend killed it was good to know Tommy Merlyn was fine and alive back in Starling City.
Being lonely as evidently shown when Maseo and his wife Tatsu would leave him to the contraption that he is using to navigate the internet. A simple website of ambiguity. The thought of talking to someone outside the restrictive bubble seemed like a grand idea. It took a short bit to figure on a usable username. Kind of lame but doable. He logged in. Answering the site’s interests that he wants to partake in. Simple in fact. He is a male looking for a female. Basic stuff he thinks. Clicking buttons on what personality traits he seems to prefer.
His likes don’t always go hand in hand with what he accepts in real life but here he is in a world of make believe. He knows he wants to mingle with someone on par with what he always imagined would be the best thing ever. No strings attached. Just be raw as natural as he could be and know he couldn’t emotionally get hurt. A person on the other side of a keyboard could not elicit any deep feelings. Thus, Oliver decides to take a leap of faith and bare himself. What does he have to lose? He’s survived some dark shit so far.
And clicking the agree to terms. BeeMyQueen is now able to roam the site to find someone of interest to engage with. 
The voice calling out to him finally gets his attention.
He knows it is too late to hide what is in his grasp. It’s a wonderful picture he finds himself unable to tear away as it elicits a rare smile to form on his face. Glad this portrait of a girl has persisted the journey with him.  A spunky edgy college age girl is looking back at him. Those eyes always had him mesmerized.
Till finding Felicity in the flesh, he always wondered if that crazy stunt of talking to a random girl online was really of the girl, he’s had some far-out fantasies about in some darker times while trying to stay alive. 
“What do you have there, Ollie?”
Sighing at being unable to hide the picture as fast as he should have Sara is already snatching the picture from his now loosen grip.
Her gasp is all it takes to know he is in trouble.
“Hot damn! This can’t be the same girl.” Sara keeping Oliver from getting the photo back as she moves her body away from his, “Not our blondie.” She is making a whistling sound.
“Sara!”
His tone has her jest, “Does she know?”
“Know what?”
“You have a pretty exotic picture of her?”
“Nothing exotic about it.” He reaches over and lucky gets the picture of Felicity Smoak back into his possession.
“How did you come across getting that photo?”
“It’s a long story.”
“While we wait for the perpetrator on that list of yours, I think I can do with an over dramatic Queen story.”
“Fine, but you need to promise me you’ll never tell Felicity about this?”
“Oh, this is some deep…” Sara looking at his hand where a photo is clutched securely.
“Sara?”
“Ollie!” She replies while rolling her eyes.
“Felicity can’t know about this. It would make everything even more tense between us.”
“You have the hots for her.”
“It isn’t like that?”
Sara gives him a dire look as her hands plant themselves on her hips. Giving the illusion she knows more than he is admitting to.
“She deserves better.”
“Better than what?”
“Felicity is…” He takes a few extra seconds before adding, “She’s like sunshine on a darken day. I can’t hurt her. She’s special.”
“Special? And what? I’m chopped liver?”
He huffs, “You know what I mean.”
“Yep, I do. We’re comfort and we have an understanding. It is what makes us…us.”
“I won’t tell the story if you don’t promise to keep it to yourself.”
“Really… Ollie?” Seeing he isn’t budging. “Fine, Oli-ver.”
Oliver looks down at the picture of Felicity Smoak. One taken before she graduated M.I.T. in 2009.
“You promise?”
“My gosh, relax old man. I promise.”
It takes a dragged out look between them for Oliver to relax and begin a tale of how the picture of a Goth Felicity Smoak came into his possession.

The three girls looked at each other before stepping back, but not without one of them rolling her eyes at you. “Are you okay?” Yoongi turned to you, concern lacing his features. “Did they hurt you?”
“No, I’m fine,” you gathered yourself and exhaled in relief. “Thanks.”
“Who are those people?”
“Tabloids, I think?” You glanced down at your phone and groaned rather loudly after discovering that the taxi you booked had already left you a bad no-show review. You probably didn’t notice it pulling up and the driver calling you because of all the distractions around you. “Great, now I have–”
