Choosing Between Top-Rated Schools, Best Play Schools, and Pre-Schools in India
Congratulations! You're about to embark on a wonderful journey – parenthood! And with that comes the exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) task of choosing the right educational foundation for your little one. In India, the land of vibrant culture and rich educational heritage, you'll be met with a multitude of options – Top Rated Schools in India, Best Play Schools in India, and Best Pre Schools in India. But what exactly do these terms mean, and how do you pick the perfect fit for your child?
Let's take a deep dive into this world of early education, decode the titles, and help you make an informed decision!
Play Schools vs. Pre-Schools: Understanding the Nuances
Often used interchangeably, there's a subtle difference between play schools and pre-schools in India. Play schools typically cater to a younger age group, from 18 months to 3 years old. Their focus is heavily tilted towards, well, play! Think fun activities, socialization, sensory exploration, and igniting a love for learning through interactive experiences. Pre-schools, on the other hand, bridge the gap between play and academics. They target children aged 3-5 years and introduce them to basic literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills in a play-based environment.
Here's an analogy to understand it better. Imagine a beautiful garden. Play schools help your child explore the garden – the feel of the soft grass under their feet, the vibrant colors of the flowers, the joy of digging in the dirt. Pre-schools, while still keeping the garden fun, introduce tools like small watering cans and colorful seeds, gently nurturing the early buds of knowledge.
Top-Rated Schools: Decoding the Distinction
Now, let's talk about Top Rated Schools in India. This term is generally broader and encompasses schools across various levels, including primary, secondary, and higher education. Rankings for these schools are often based on factors like academic performance, infrastructure, faculty qualifications, and co-curricular activities. While these rankings can be a helpful starting point, remember, what makes a school "top-rated" for the masses might not necessarily be the best fit for your unique child.
Choosing the Right School: It's All About Your Child!
So, how do you navigate this plethora of options and find the perfect school? Here are some key considerations:
Your Child's Age and Developmental Stage: Are you looking for a play school that fosters social interaction and exploratory play, or a pre-school that introduces basic academic concepts?
Teaching Philosophy: Does the school prioritize a play-based approach, a Montessori curriculum, or a more structured learning environment? Choose one that aligns with your parenting philosophy.
Student-Teacher Ratio: Smaller class sizes allow for more personalized attention, which is crucial in early childhood education.
Curriculum and Activities: Does the curriculum cater to your child's individual needs and learning style? Are there opportunities for creative expression, physical activity, and social interaction?
School Environment: Look for a safe, clean, and stimulating space with age-appropriate learning materials and dedicated play areas.
Location and Accessibility: Consider the commute time and how it might impact your child's routine.
The Importance of Visiting Schools: See it, Feel it, Experience it!
Don't just rely on online reviews or hearsay! Schedule visits to shortlisted schools, both play schools, and pre-schools. Observe the classrooms, interact with the teachers, and get a feel for the overall atmosphere. Trust your gut feeling – does the environment seem warm, welcoming, and nurturing?
Real-World Example: Choosing Between Apples and Oranges
Let's say your child is 2.5 years old and loves exploring and playing. They tend to be shy around new people. In this case, a play school with a strong focus on social interaction, imaginative play, and a smaller student-teacher ratio might be a better fit than a pre-school with a more structured curriculum.
FAQs
Q: Are play schools and pre-schools mandatory in India? A: No, play schools and pre-schools are not mandatory in India. However, they can provide a strong foundation for your child's future education.
Q: When should I start looking for a play school or pre-school? A: It's never too early to start researching! You can begin exploring options even before your child turns 18 months old.
Remember, the journey of finding the perfect school is a collaborative effort. Talk to other parents, seek recommendations, and most importantly, trust your instincts.

How Montessori Method can change the kids’ life?
Education is very crucial for kids, but we need to take care of what kind of education and schooling help the kids improve their lives. At an early age, children grab things easily, which is why we need to give proper education and space to every child. When it comes to the Montessori Method of education in kids' lives, it plays a significant role. In this post-Montessori Pasadena, CA, post, the team has mentioned how it changes the kid's life.
Let's read it out:
Each kid is respected as a unique individual
Montessori Method highlights the significance of children learning in a variety of methods and accommodates all learning styles. Students are free to learn at their own pace, with the teacher guiding them and a personalized learning plan.
Capability
Montessori classrooms are purposefully designed to provide children with opportunities to develop their talents, whether it's learning to dress themselves independently, multiply a multi-digit equation, effectively articulate their needs, or collaborate to solve problems.
Each classroom is bursting at the seams with developmentally appropriate activities that encourage children to interact with specialized learning resources and collaborate.
On purpose, only one of each activity is set up in the classroom. Students have the opportunity to focus on whatever activity they like, so they learn to make decisions based on their interests and the resources available to them.
While some children prefer to work in groups, the majority of children prefer to do things on their own. As the pupils grow, the program integrates small group instruction and interactive activities.
Through a combination of independent, pair, small-group, and whole-group lessons and activities, children are introduced to multiple learning relationships and interpersonal dynamics—valuable skills for their interactions outside of the classroom.
Self-care
These exercises allow children to become physically autonomous. Activities in this category may include learning to wash one's hands or putting on one's clothes. It could be as easy as aiding an 18-month-old in pulling down his pants, but it could also be packing lunch or an overnight bag for an elementary student.
Developing Students' Capabilities
By enrolling your children in a Montessori South Pasadena CA school, they will be able to study in well-designed classrooms and take advantage of several opportunities, such as learning to dress appropriately, communicating their needs, problem-solving, and even multiplying complex equations with multiple numbers. To stimulate contacts among youngsters, each classroom is stocked with a variety of growth activities.
Conclusion
These are some ways in which Montessori school positively changes a child’s life. The Montessori Method allows the kids to explore the world on their terms. If you are looking for the same, you need to choose the best team for your child.

Potty Training: The Hussain Method
This potty training method might not work for everyone (and it’s probably a little different for boys), but it worked like a charm for my second daughter after I figured this all out via trial and error with my first daughter. My littlest was completely potty trained by 2.5 years old -- overnight and everything. We started training her at 18 months after 12 months of cloth diapers and 6 months of diapers, pull-ups and swim diapers. I just couldn’t do it anymore. My intense hatred for diaper changing gave me the incentive to figure out the fastest way to potty train. I found out that consistency is key, and you have to be committed. I hope this works for you, too!
Potty Training: The Hussain Method
1) Prep your child ahead of time by allowing them to watch you use the bathroom. If you have access to the Daniel Tiger episode or book that teaches the bathroom jingle, it's amazing! Sing it often! "When you have to go potty, stop and go right away. Flush and wash, and be on your way!" We still sing it whenever we’re in the bathroom so my kids don’t forget to flush and wash.
2) Prep the materials you'll need:
Several old towels or rags
LOTS of disinfectant wipes (we like CleanWell's wipes from Amazon)
Bucket
Training seat and step stool (saves you from cleaning a mini toilet!)
Lots of underwear (about 10-12 per day at first) -- leave in the bathroom
Lots of pants (about 10-12 per day at first) -- leave in the bathroom
Rewards: Jelly beans or M&Ms, Hot Wheels, etc.
3) Pick a week/weekend that you'll be home and not really going out a lot. Put your child in underwear and pants until s/he wets themselves for the first time. You might want to put pee absorbant pads on the couch or anything else that won't be easy to clean. We have hardwood floors so that made it really easy for us to clean up.
4) Once s/he pees, their underwear and pants together will absorb a great deal of the pee so you don't have a giant puddle to clean. Having the pants on is key! Then have a conversation with them about how it doesn't feel good to be wet, and how the pee belongs in the toilet, not on the floor (my daughter’s Montessori school encourages us to use the word “toilet” instead of “potty”).
5) Take your child to the toilet right away after the conversation and have them sit on the training seat for 2 minutes just so s/he gets used to being on it, explaining how pee belongs in the toilet and offering 2 jellybeans or M&Ms if s/he can do it on her own next time. When s/he's old enough, they can use the step stool to climb on to the toilet seat on their own. Put their underwear and pants in the bucket so you can collect the dirty laundry to do later. We did laundry 2x a day while training -- once after lunch and once in the evening. Then grab new underwear and pants from your bathroom stash, and change them. “Flush and wash, and be on your way!” (Sing the Daniel Tiger song!)
6) Clean up the pee together with your child, first wipe the floor with old towels or rags to absorb the pee, and then wipe down the floor with the disinfectant wipes. Your child will likely hate cleaning up, but it’s an added incentive for them to get the pee into the toilet so s/he doesn’t have to clean up. Remind them regularly to tell you if they feel like they have to pee. Describing what it feels like helps them learn how to identify the sensation.
7) Set an alarm immediately for one hour so you can train them to pee every hour (assuming they don’t have another accident before then). My older daughter had to go to a urologist once, and the doctor recommended that she pee every hour at 2 years old, but she said you'll want to shift it to every 1.5 hours by 3 years old.
8) When your alarm goes off, take your child immediately to the toilet and let them sit there for 5 minutes, singing the Daniel Tiger song or any other song that will entertain them and make them think about using the toilet. If s/he pees, shout out praises and dance around, and immediately give them the 2 jellybeans or M&Ms. If not, no biggie, just remind them again to tell you if s/he feels like they have to pee. It's so important not to express frustration, make them feel bad, or shame them at any time during this process.
9) Continue to take them to the bathroom every hour to practice. If s/he has an accident, reassure them that it's okay, but remind them that they’re practicing to make it to the toilet. Make a big deal out of the times s/he goes in the toilet and give a reward immediately to associate it with the good behavior. My daughter would say, "I want jellybeans", and I would say, "Sure! Next time you have to pee, do it in the toilet, and you'll get jellybeans!" Eventually, we just naturally phased out of the jelly-bean rewards -- she forgot after a few months, but we still continue the labeled praise. "Great job peeing in the toilet!" (FYI: "Great job!" by itself could mean an infinite number of things to a toddler.)
10) For bowel movements, you can up the stakes on the rewards. We gave out one Hot Wheels car for each poop in the toilet. There was a lot of celebrating too -- the shouting and silly dances are key. Kids live for that kind of attention. Eventually, you won't have to time the pees anymore. S/he'll start to recognize the sensation and tell you when s/he has to go. The first time my daughter told me on her own and made it to the potty, we had a MAJOR celebration. When she tells us now, we still get excited and have a race to see who can get to the toilet the fastest, shouting "Run! Run! Run!".
11) For going out, you can use the training pull-ups. We started out that way, but eventually just went back to underwear and pants. We always timed it every hour on the hour to go to the toilet, and made sure to bring lots of wipes and changes of clothes with us. In the car, we put a pee absorbant pad in the car seat. We also got one of those Potette Plus portable potties if we were going to a park that didn't have a bathroom around. Taking them every hour was key. (Side note: My youngest was terrified of the portable potty and bathrooms she wasn't used to at first so I would just get down on her level, assure her it was okay, pet her head, and sing to her until she went. Watching big sister use them really helped too so we lucked out there!)
12) For nighttime, I would recommend the training pull-ups for a while until you have the daytime training down without more than one accident per day. We had my youngest in training pull-ups at night and right before we’d go to bed, we’d change her while she was sleeping. Focusing on daytime peeing in the toilet is hard enough for them. But after 3 months of training, we didn't allow liquids past 7:00 pm and transitioned to underwear, pants, and pee pads on the bed. For the first couple of weeks, we would pick her up around 11:00 pm (before we went to bed), and held her on the toilet so she could pee while half-asleep (I'd squat down, she would lean her head on my shoulder, and I would gently encourage her to pee, slightly waking her up if I needed to). After a couple of weeks, we'd have an accident about once a week at night, but for the most part she could sleep through the night and hold it.
Even now that both girls are fully potty trained, we still time going to the bathroom every 1.5 hours when we're outside of the house, engaging in fun activities. It’s hard when you’re distracted and having a blast at birthday parties, play dates or fun outings. So glad we have alarms on our phones!
Best of luck to y’all! May the force be with you, and may you keep your gag reflexes temporarily at bay through this crazy process!

What is Montessori Education?
"Education is an aid to life. It is a natural process carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words, but by experiences in the environment." Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori is an educational philosophy based on the belief that a child learns best within a social environment that supports and nurtures each individual's unique development. Montessori education was founded by Dr. Maria Montessori.
Who was Dr. Maria Montessori?
Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an early 20th century Italian educator and visionary. She became the first female doctor in Italy in 1896. Through her work with children, she developed a unique educational method known as the Montessori Method. She received a total of six nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize in a three-year period: 1949, 1950, and 1951.
How Did It Begin?
In 1907, she opened her first classroom, the Casa dei Bambini, or Children's House, in a tenement building in Rome. From the beginning, Montessori based her work on her observations of children and experimentation with the environment, materials, and lessons available to them. She frequently referred to her work as "scientific pedagogy". Montessori continued to extend her work during her lifetime, developing a comprehensive model of psychological development from birth to age 24. As Montessori developed her theory and practice, she came to believe that education had a role to play in the development of world peace. She felt that children allowed to develop according to their inner laws of development would give rise to a more peaceful and enduring civilization.
Basis of Montessori Education/Curriculum
Montessori observed four distinct periods, or "planes", in human development, extending from birth to six years, from six to twelve, from twelve to eighteen, and from eighteen to twenty-four. She saw different characteristics, learning modes, and developmental imperatives active in each of these planes, and called for educational approaches specific to each period.
At Floretz we handle children who are in the first plane
The first plane extends from birth to around six years of age. During this period, Montessori observed that the child undergoes striking physical and psychological development. The first plane child is seen as a concrete, sensorial explorer and learner engaged in the developmental work of psychological self-construction and building functional independence. Montessori introduced several concepts to explain this work, including the absorbent mind, sensitive periods, and normalization.
Absorbent mind
Montessori described the young child's behavior of effortlessly assimilating the sensorial stimuli of his or her environment, including information from the senses, language, culture, and the development of concepts with the term "absorbent mind". She believed that this is a power unique to the first plane, and that it fades as the child approached age six.
Sensitive periods
Montessori also observed periods of special sensitivity to particular stimuli during this time which she called the "sensitive periods". In Montessori education, the classroom environment responds to these periods by making appropriate materials and activities available while the periods are active in the young child. She identified the following periods and their duration:
Acquisition of language—from birth to around six years old
Interest in small objects—from around 18 months to three years old
Order—from around one to three years old
Sensory refinement—from birth to around four years old
Social behavior—from around two and a half to four years old
Normalization
Finally, Montessori observed in children from three to six years old a psychological state she termed "normalization". Normalization arises from concentration and focus on activity which serves the child's developmental needs, and is characterized by the ability to concentrate as well as "spontaneous discipline, continuous and happy work, social sentiments of help and sympathy for others."
Multiple Intelligence
One of the differences between Dr. Montessori's approach to early childhood education and the approach found in many primary schools is the adoption of elements of the Multiple Intelligence Theory. Harvard professor Howard Gardner developed and codified this theory in the late 20th Century. Dr. Maria Montessori would seem to have developed her approach to teaching children along very similar lines. This educational approach was also used in ancient India as mentioned in the Indian Texts, the Upanishads.
Frequently Asked Questions Are Montessori children successful later in life?
Research studies show that Montessori children are well prepared for later life academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to scoring well on standardized tests, Montessori children are ranked above average on such criteria as following directions, turning in work on time, listening attentively, using basic skills, showing responsibility, asking provocative questions, showing enthusiasm for learning, self-help and adapting to new situations.
Do Montessori Schools follow an Academic Year (eg. June to May)?
In Montessori schools, help is offered based on the biological age of the child. Dr. Montessori talks about the interest spurts children have at different ages. Again we offer one on one teaching in a class room. When a teacher plans a child's lesson, the child's age and what he has already learnt in the past are important. The concept of Academic Year and the Program as Mont 1 or Mont 2, etc. are only for administrative purposes. The curriculum is continuous and is offered at the speed at which the child learns.
What special training do Montessori teachers have?
A Montessori Primary teacher must have completed a one year diploma in Primary Montessori education with a recognized Montessori Institute. It is preferable that she holds a Bachelor's degree and has good communication skills.
Why do Montessori classrooms have mixed age group?
This is in accordance with the Montessori Philosophy. It is of great help to the child in his social and language development. It gives him a wonderful opportunity to work as a team, sometimes to lead, sometimes to follow, learn from an older child, help the younger child, interact with peers, etc. At any point in time, there will be older children from whom the younger child picks up languages.
Is it true that Montessori children start writing late and have a bad handwriting?
The Montessori curriculum offers systematic motor and intellectual preparation for the child. We expect the child to start writing at the age of 4. The activities of the Montessori school offers extensive gross and fine motor preparation which is the basis for writing. With that kind of help and preparation, unless there is a biological problem, the child will write.
What is the best way to choose a Montessori school for my child?
Ask if the Principal and teachers are Montessori trained. Visit the school, observe the classroom in action and later ask the teacher or Principal to explain the theory behind the activities you saw.

How to Choose the Best Preschool for Your Little Munchkin?
How to Choose the Best Preschool for Your Little Munchkin?
Good parenting doesn’t come with a prescribed definition of it. Every child has a unique and different upbringing with a balance of love and severity to make him/her as a responsible person in society. Our little one starts their learning from their surroundings i.e. from their family and friends.

Villa Montessori Preschool Leesburg Holds Successful Family Fall Harvest Celebration
Villa Montessori Preschool, based in Leesburg, Virginia, is pleased to report that their Family Fall Harvest Celebration was received extremely well by the families and members of the local community. Such events are a great way for parents to explore the facilities at Villa Montessori and learn how the school’s charges are educated in their safe and nurturing environment.
Ms. Kimberly, speaking on behalf of Villa Montessori Preschool Leesburg, stated that, “Celebrating school life with families and our community is a great way to show that our high quality programs help children get the right educational foundation as early as possible. We offer Toddler and Primary classes as well as full-day Kindergarten." Villa Montessori Preschool Leesburg serves as a daycare provider, following a daily schedule that includes an integrated Montessori and Reggio curriculum guided by each child’s individual interests. At the recent event, teachers and staff were on hand to answer questions about their unconventional approach, one that notably inspires children and parents alike. Through their website, https://leesburg.villamontessoripreschool.com, those interested in learning more can explore the difference the school makes in the lives of the families who attend the school as well as their community as a whole. The Family Fall Harvest Celebration is one of a number of events that are open to the public throughout the year. All their open events are child and family friendly, and a great way to find out more about the programs they offer—which include Montessori, full-day Kindergarten, Reggio, and Connect. While Montessori and Reggio are fairly well known educational philosophies around the world, Connect is not as widely understood. Connect is a new concept that blends these two philosophies, and it is designed to better connect a child to their peers, parents, family, and surroundings. Together, Montessori and Reggio create S.T.E.A.M, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Those who wish to attend any of the upcoming open days are invited to follow the school through their Facebook page and events at https://www.facebook.com/events/421307798530875. Recent posts show their students preparing a dessert for the Fall Festival, and learning through a host of other fun activities.
Parent Lainey Hashimi-Clark gave the school top marks in her Google review recently. In it, she said, “We loved having our daughter at Villa Montessori! It was very important to my husband and I that she went to an accredited Montessori institution. She started at Villa when she was 19 months (when the school opened), and with her being my first (and only) child, I was a nervous wreck leaving her that first day of school! The entire Villa family made me feel so comfortable and were amazing with her, I knew we were in the right place.”
Hashimi-Clark continues, “She moved up to the two year old class and eventually to the three to five year olds. We were so pleased with how much she was learning to get her ready for kindergarten and also the everyday life skills she acquired. Villa Montessori also made sure to teach her the importance of community, whether it be locally or across the sea. We love the Villa family and are forever grateful for them playing such an important role in our daughter’s life.”
Similarly, Meghan B. said, “As a developmental specialist, I see students in various private preschools in Loudoun County. Villa Montessori in Leesburg is fantastic. Whenever I visit, the students are busy learning and having fun. My interactions with the staff have been wonderful. I definitely recommend checking them out!” Parents can rest assured that their child is treated as an individual, with their own ideas, expressions, and opinions. Their Preschool Toddler classrooms provide outlets that represent the child’s many “languages,” allowing them to communicate and learn through drawing, painting, sculpture, shadow play, dramatic play, scientific observations, gardening, and music. Through their Primary class of 3-6 year olds, the school strives to ensure that their charges learn best through their own experiences. Parents interested in enrolling their children in the school for a high quality daycare or preschool education may contact Ms. Kimberly, Director of Villa Montessori Preschool Leesburg directly. Those who wish to find out more about Villa Montessori Preschool Leesburg programs, their admissions process, and their open houses and experience days may visit the school’s website to read further.
