So... I just finished Demons...

heavy spoilers below the cut!

Honestly, I have no idea as to how I’m supposed to structure this review, given that I have many thoughts (and feelings) about having just ended another novel that’s full to the brim with things to talk about. I’m just going to write this according to the flow of my thoughts.

I’ve been told months before starting Demons that the first part is a little boring to get through, but in retrospect, I don’t subscribe to that belief anymore. Setting up the backdrop with Stepan and Varvara’s relationship was essential in establishing the main themes of the story.

(a) Control. For a woman in that century, seizing the opportunity to have the upperhand over a man is the most viable and beneficial option for Varvara. Sure, she might be more financially well-off than Stepan, but in the eyes of the conservative society then, she’s still supposed to defer to him due to her sex. There’s a passage wherein (I think) Stepan contemplated marrying Varvara (after Vsevolod Stavrogin’s death), but he ultimately decided not to. Even if he did push through with it, I don’t think Varvara would have agreed, either, because that meant succumbing to someone who she obviously thought was below her (“...no doubt, Varvara very often did hate him…”), and of course, knowing her character, she would absolutely not do that. 

(b) Projection/idealization. Varvara quite literally had Stepan dress up like the Kukolnik portrait that she saw as a young girl. She saw Stepan as her “creation”, even; she defended him from everything and so whenever he acted in a way that betrayed her image of him, she’d grow resentful of him. Varvara, having invested a lot into Stepan — emotionally and financially — now expects him to slavishly obey and go along with her every whim. Here, one can also see the transactional element of the relationships in Demons, and we see this, along with the other aforementioned themes, become more fleshed out as the story progresses. 

We’re introduced to Nikolai Stavrogin next, who is Varvara’s only son. I’ve spoken a great deal about Nikolai here already (especially on Twitter… My mutuals are probably so sick of seeing Maxim Matveev’s Stavrogin’s face on my account XD), but this is yet another opportunity for me to talk about him again. Having the privilege to be able to see him from a larger perspective and know about his childhood, I honestly felt sorry for him, even until his death. I tweeted this about him three months ago:

I’m not going to go on a rant about nature vs nurture here, but I really do believe that those nights where Stepan would just trauma dump unto this kid unprovoked without providing any good opinion of the world afterwards was what began Nikolai’s self-contained view of the world. I doubt he was able to make a lot of friends his age, too; he was quite the shy kid and he often kept to himself, not to mention that Varvara wasn’t the best parent, either. She provided for Nikolai, yes, but she fell short in actually being his mother. Nikolai was more of a status symbol for her than a son she cherished, really, and when she felt that something really disturbing had taken root within him, it was too late to do anything to counteract it. I gush about him a lot (like a lot, and this is more true if you follow me on Twitter), but it’s Matveev who I like, honestly. Not Nikolai as a person. I feel sorry for that loser (lovingly... and pitifully), because he’s carrying a weight inside of him that he can’t even grasp, and everyone around him is busy projecting whatever onto him. He voices out his frustration over this after the duel with Artemy Pavlovich, and it’s one of those moments that show how Nikolai isn’t just some figure of mystery and intrigue. He’s still a person, and he’s so, so tired of it all.

I also had a phase where I really got into picking apart Pyotr Verkhovensky’s character. As a psych grad, it’s so fascinating to see the theories I’ve learned that touch on the effects of parental neglect come alive through Pyotr. This, coupled with that childhood fear of his, molded him into the master manipulator that he was. Everything he does is for the sake of harnessing control, even if it makes him look stupid in the eyes of others. Pyotr’s “deference” to Nikolai is not an actual display of submission — it’s only a front, because what he really aims to do is to gain control of the latter through such an act. He’s boot-licking since he needs the influence that Nikolai has, not because he truly respects or sees him as someone so great; at the end of the day, it’s all about control. It’s why Pyotr does a complete 180-degree turn and goes from calling Nikolai the “sun” to “scoundrel” when he heard about him leaving town. And I bet that that struck a really sensitive nerve in Pyotr, having been abandoned by his own father as a child. I’ve also noticed something about him — he has his way with using his words on others so they’d go along with what he wants to do, but whenever someone attacks him with facts (e.g. Yulia Mikhailovna calling him out on his behavior towards Andrei Antonovich; Fedka telling him that he’s but a yapping dog and that Nikolai sees it as “...a great honor just to spit on him from above”), he cannot, for the life of him, handle it at all. Like, he gets MAD mad when someone lays the truth on him.

I want to take a moment and talk about the women in the story, too. I tweeted about the theme of the women being the men’s scapegoats for their wrongdoings. We see this with Yulia Mikhailovna, whose “idiotic behavior” was used to cover up Pyotr’s machinations behind the chaos that ruined the fête; I don’t intend to rid her of her influence in what happened, because she did have a hand in it, too; but it’s reductive and irresponsible to say that it was simply her who caused everything to go to shit. After all, Pyotr was the one who was living off of the influence she had, and he was using her as a pawn in his game, as well. Another example is Liza’s death. She’s killed by the townspeople because she was Nikolai’s mistress, and they believed her to be the reason why the Lebyadkins were killed, thus leading to the devastating fire that razed Zarechye. I can get behind that, but where’s the violence that is to be directed towards Nikolai himself? It takes two to tango, so why is he not getting the same kind of heat? There’s also Pyotr, who had orchestrated everything to lead her to Skvoreshniki. Again, I’m not saying Liza’s without agency (because she did choose to go there herself), but it was still a man who guided her down that path to destruction. 

One thing that sat at the back of my head and really weighed me down during my read was the scarcity of love in the story. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s entirely loveless, because there were moments where love was present (e.g. Mavriky’s acceptance of Liza even after everything that has happened, Kirillov’s support while Marie was on the brink of childbirth; and Shatov seeing a new beginning for his family after the birth of the baby), but the chaos and despair just greatly outweighed it. I didn’t expect it to feel light, anyway (like of course it wouldn’t be that way, this is a Dostoevsky novel, duh), but the experience was just really bleak. 

There are little genuine relationships in this novel, too. Everyone is constantly trying to one-up everyone else, and this post will not end if I decide to cite them all and analyze them. They're all constantly grappling for power over another person, and the lengths that they'd go to are even self-sabotaging. Like, "never mind if I look like a fool, hurt myself or others in the process; what matters is that I come on top of everyone." And of course, as I've discussed in an older post, you can't expect love to come out of a relationship that's borne out of the struggle for control and dominance.

I knew that everything was going to go to shit at the end of the novel, but the awareness of such did not dull the pain at all. Watching it actually go down as I was reading so horribly was still hard for me. I think what really killed me about Nikolai’s fate was Kirillov’s words about him: “...if Stavrogin believes, he doesn’t believe that he believes; but if he doesn’t believe, then he doesn’t believe that he doesn’t believe.” Nikolai’s not entirely convinced of his own faithlessness, much less comfortable with his nihilism. Up until the end he was looking for something to believe in, but as fate would have it, he’s unable to find what he was looking for. Like Tikhon said, Nikolai doesn’t want to be just lukewarm. He’d settle to either be warm or cold, even, but he can’t, because he doesn’t know how to escape the prison of the existential emptiness that he’s got inside of him. 

This leads me back to Kirillov, too. When Pyotr came to him to make sure that he would follow through with their agreement, I could feel Kirillov hesitating to kill himself. I don’t think I breathed when I was reading that part. I felt like he, too, was looking for a way out of this bargain with Pyotr, but alas, he couldn’t find it. 

And Shatov. God. His death happened so fast (as in the way it was narrated). It absolutely broke me how a few moments ago he was so happy, so excited to have Marie back and become a father to their baby (well, I know it isn’t his, but that’s Shatov’s baby. Period.) And then… It was all gone. Just like that. I had to take a moment after that chapter to debrief myself because it was just so sudden. I have no other words for this bit, honestly.

I want to say more, but I fear I’d be rambling too much already. I might put out separate posts according to a specific theme or element that I wanna discuss, but so far, this is all I have to say about Demons. Jesus Christ. 10/10, would probably read again, but not in the near future because it was just too much. Right now I’m just excited to integrate everything I’ve learned into my fanfiction since I’ve got a more confident grasp on the enigma that is Nikolai Stavrogin. God, I wanna make him suffer all over again. See you all in my next post about this damn novel.

Hey girl, ever since I found your blog, I’ve been lowkey obsessed—spent whole afternoons scrolling through every post and sitting with all the takes you’ve dropped (work and my dog permitting, of course).

As an OG fan, I’ve got some seriously mixed feelings about T.O.P. And honestly, his involvement in Squid Game 2 just stirred the pot. Out of nowhere, there’s a flood of new, over-the-top fans. Like, okay, I get it—no judgment. I used to be in that phase too. And, yeah, I’m genuinely happy for him if this project brings something positive to his life, career, or even just his state of mind. But at the same time, it’s hard not to feel some type of way about how he dipped out on us for years without a word.

Let me try to break this down clearly (even if I have to fight through the language barrier—English isn’t my first language—and my Aquarius sun/ascendant combo that really doesn’t vibe with shades of gray).

I know frustration and disappointment usually come from unmet expectations. And, yeah, I get that expectations are mostly the responsibility of the person who has them—they’re tied to personal needs and projections. But let’s be real: the person being idolized plays a part in setting those expectations, often through unclear communication. And from my perspective, T.O.P has created this toxic, messy dynamic. Even if it wasn’t intentional, the outcome is still the same.

His artistic impact, unique vibe, and the hope for a comeback don’t excuse his lack of consideration for his fans—the same people who’ve been propping up his career, financially and emotionally. Let’s not forget: without us buying his music, showing up to his concerts, watching his movies, or even supporting his wine business (hello, I’ve tried the Bordeaux—it took me a minute to adjust to its lighter notes, but I’ve gotta admit, it’s solid), he wouldn’t have the same visibility or lifestyle he enjoys now. It’s a simple fact.

This goes beyond gratitude—it’s about professional accountability. Being an artist is a job, and like any job, there’s a responsibility to the people who consume what you produce. A little recognition—whether through occasional updates or just acknowledging the support—should be the bare minimum. Continuing to make money off his projects while ignoring the people funding them? That’s exploitation, plain and simple.

In the entertainment world, the artist-fan relationship is like an unspoken social contract: fans give financial and emotional support, and the artist delivers art, entertainment, and at least a basic level of professional respect. Ignoring that dynamic completely? It tips the scales in a way that’s just not fair.

And look, if he doesn’t want to engage, that’s fine. But then step away from the public eye for real. Retire officially, stop living off our support, and find a different path. But clearly, that’s not what he wants—otherwise, he wouldn’t have signed on for something as globally hyped as Squid Game 2.

I’m really hoping tomorrow’s interview sheds some light on his absence these past few years. Best-case scenario? It’s the start of something new for him and a way to reconnect with the people who’ve had his back all this time. Worst-case? It’s just another cash grab, a strategic move with no real intention behind it other than self-interest.

But this was so wonderfully written and I pray this will be the outcome for the interview today / tomorrow. We need answers. A thorough and thoughtful explanation about what he has been up to or what happened to him? Where he plans on going with this etc. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, I don't want to be disappointed. I understand how incredibly difficult it is but if he feels miserable in the industry then he needs to manage his money better, save, invest, sell some things, expand on the wine business into america or other countries or create a solid business and maybe go back to school then leave the industry like you said.

Not dating publicly especially another celebrity has hurt him more than staying mysteriously single. Also staying away from the public eye and isolated has kept him willfully ignorant to how people would digest acting these days and how films / dramas have changed. I think some people are perturbed by his acting and see it as over the top, excessive, exaggerated, and clumsy cause this isnt the type of acting direction and skill that matches the tone of the franchise and that type of acting is out of bounds for whats expected today. Gives me teas of him being stuck in the past.

I hope we get answers. The answers we want.

Well, the Republicans did it. After middle-of-the-night negotiations to include more of the far right’s wish list, House Republicans passed a bill agreeing to a short-term raising of the debt ceiling, so long as it is accompanied by massive spending cuts and a rollback of Biden’s major accomplishments. The bill squeaked through by a vote of 217 to 215, mostly along party lines. Four extremist Republicans voted no because they believed the measure didn’t go far enough to slash spending.

The administration reiterated that it would not negotiate over paying the nation’s bills. “In our history, we have never defaulted on our debt or failed to pay our bills,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. “Congressional Republicans must act immediately and without conditions to avoid default and ensure that the full faith and credit of the United States is not put at risk. That is their job. Economists have warned that default could spark a dangerous financial crisis, lead to a recession costing millions of Americans their jobs, endanger hard-working Americans’ retirement savings, and increase long-term federal borrowing costs, adding to deficits and debt. We are not a deadbeat nation.”

“I am here because Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he said it didn’t happen,” E. Jean Carroll said in court today for the former president’s civil trial for rape. “He lied and shattered my reputation, and I am here to try to get my life back.” Carroll offered a detailed account of what she says was Trump’s attack nearly 30 years ago, an attack that warped her life.

While she testified, Trump attacked Carroll on social media. The judge overseeing the case, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, warned Trump’s lawyer that his client’s statement was “entirely inappropriate,” saying he was trying to influence the jury. Any more commentary might open up “a new source of potential liability,” Kaplan said. The lawyer said he would do the best he could to silence Trump, but later in the day, Trump posted another attack and his son Eric Trump followed suit.

“I wanted to address my senators, Cruz and Cornyn,” Amanda Zurawski told the Senate Committee on the Judiciary today at a hearing on reproductive rights in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision. Zurawski’s water broke 18 weeks into her pregnancy, making it impossible for her fetus to survive. Because of the vague and extreme antiabortion bill Texas lawmakers had passed, her health care providers refused to treat her so long as the fetus had a heartbeat, denying her an abortion. Zurawski developed deadly sepsis and, after giving birth to a stillborn daughter, spent three days in intensive care as doctors worked to save her life.

Zurawski said she wanted the two Texas Republican senators to know “that what happened to me I think most people in this room would agree was horrific. But it’s a direct result of the policies they support. I nearly died on their watch, and…I may have been robbed of the opportunity to have children in the future. And it’s because of the policies that they support.”

Neither Cruz nor Cornyn showed up to hear her. Cornyn later said Zurawski should consider suing her doctors for misinterpreting the law. Zurawski responded: “[M]y physician and my team of health care professionals that I saw over the course of three days, while I was repeatedly turned away from health care access, made the decision to not provide an abortion because that’s what they felt they had to do under Texas’ law…. And that will continue to happen and it is continuing to happen, and it’s not a result of misinterpretation. Today, the Walt Disney Company sued Florida governor Ron DeSantis over his “relentless campaign to weaponize government power” and attack free speech. Disney’s former chief executive officer last year spoke out against the governor’s law prohibiting teachers from mentioning sexual orientation or gender identity. The lawsuit says that DeSantis’s attack “now threatens Disney’s business operations, jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights.”

“For more than half a century,” the lawsuit reads,” Disney has made an immeasurable impact on Florida and its economy, establishing Central Florida as a top global tourist destination and attracting tens of millions of visitors to the State each year. People and families from every corner of the globe have traveled to Walt Disney World,” but that relationship is now in jeopardy, the lawsuit warns. “A targeted campaign of government retaliation—orchestrated at every step by Governor DeSantis as punishment for Disney’s protected speech—now threatens Disney’s business operations, jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights.”

Meanwhile, DeSantis is overseas on what has been billed as a trade mission.

Tonight, the Washington, D.C., Circuit Court of Appeals denied Trump’s last-ditch attempt to prevent former vice president Mike Pence from testifying before the grand jury investigating Trump’s attempt to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election. The grand jury has issued a subpoena for Pence; Trump tried to argue that Pence’s testimony was barred because of executive privilege. The court of appeals disagreed.

Today, two associates of former Trump ally Steve Bannon were sentenced to four years and three years in prison for soliciting donations for their “We Build the Wall” charity and then pocketing the money. Bannon was also charged in the case, but Trump pardoned him for his involvement in it before he left office.

Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., today, President Joe Biden and President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea reaffirmed what Biden called the “ironclad” alliance between the two countries. They announced a new agreement, the so-called Washington Declaration, to increase cooperation in order to strengthen the message of nuclear deterrence conveyed to North Korea. This deterrence will include military training and exercises, the establishment of a joint nuclear consultative group, and the visit of a nuclear-armed submarine to South Korea. “We’re not going to be stationing nuclear weapons on the peninsula, but we will have visits to ports, visits of nuclear submarines and things like that,” Biden said.

“A nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies and partners is unacceptable and will result in the end of whatever regime were to take such an action,” he added, a public reassurance Yoon was hoping to receive when he arrived in Washington. Nervous about North Korean development of nuclear weapons, a majority of South Koreans want to develop their own nuclear weapons, a stance the U.S. strongly opposes.

This official state visit, the second of the Biden presidency, reinforced the changing political landscape in the Indo-Pacific, where the United States seeks to support Japan and South Korea to counter the growing power of China. this is a tricky question because i know opinions vary and accounts have notable discrepancies...it's difficult with everything surrounding elvis because it often feels like, to one degree or another, everybody was looking for a way to exploit their connections to him (not necessarily in a malicious way, though some definitely have done that, but just insofar as everybody relying on him and their stories and experiences with him financially and for other assorted reasons, as comments in this thread mention), and did so especially once he died and had no say in any of it. i have a lot of qualms with the total lack of hesitation in sharing intimate details about his life with the general public that go a bit far beyond explaining his character and experiences, and yet at the same time of course there's an insatiable curiosity and market for it because people want to know about him. it makes me think of the preface shared from june's book: “There have been lots of books written about Elvis Presley, of course, with probably as many personal memoirs among them as have attached to any other cultural figure or entertainer in history. Some have been spurious, a number seem to have been written out of little more than personal rancor, motivation has ranged from love to money to self-adumbration..."

i'm rambling, but sometimes it's difficult to sift out the people still looking after e and his personhood versus those using him for their gain. jerry i would count easily as one of the former, perhaps the most obvious choice there. maybe george klein and billy smith? perspectives range all over the place on charlie hodge, joe esposito, marty lacker, lamar fike, the stanleys, and even larry geller (despite elvis often being open and vulnerable/trusting with him in particular), to the point where i feel like we have to take everything with a grain of salt and be circumspect about individual subjectivity and agendas. red and sonny i struggle with for *multiple* reasons, and given what they did to him (and whoever the third one was involved with that book. god el i'm sorry sometimes i cannot keep track of all of your people...), i think it cut him to the core, from which he did not recover (and he didn't have time). but i also respect elvis' inherent generosity and kindness and forgiving qualities that he extended to the people he loved, even when he was hurt.

tl;dr ugh sorry this is not a particularly helpful answer because it involves so many factors and complicated people. tbh i'm probably not the best person to ask this because my little introvert self that cares more about elvis' humanity and artistry than some of the noise and chaos around him is way less informed about each of those guys as individuals. i do think they all loved him in their own ways, to one degree or another, but their usefulness and incentives in sticking by him could be mercurial. and e was far from perfect himself and i'm sure many aspects of being in that group were not easy, he was responsible for many of his choices, but he also had a retinue of people clinging to his lifestyle. it can be painful to observe how he had this mix of enablers and dependents around him as constant companions and everything still unraveled the way that it did.

edit: i went to the sub to see if i could find you a better/more comprehensive response quickly and still turned up a lot of dispute, but this comment speaks to some of it (also funny how some of the comments here use similar language to what i'd already written, i appreciate seeing those thoughts from others): Each has told their version of their story and of course each person is the hero of their own story, and many paint themselves as Elvis's One True Best Friend. Some, as you mention, had proper jobs, others were really, truly sycophantic hangers-on, some were true blue friends and brothers, and some would barely qualify as part of the "Memphis Mafia" at all - they just happened to be in the right place at the right time and latched on to what little time they had in his periphery. For most who care, I think it comes down to an individual by individual basis...Personally, I think more attention should really be placed on the artists, songwriters and creatives whose influence impacted Elvis's actual creative and commercial achievements and legacy. But people like hearing celebrity gossip, and Elvis fans have always been voracious to consume anything and everything they can about him. People also like picking sides and being in opposing tribes, even over the most petty shit. In our collective cultural grief over the loss of Elvis, trying to grasp onto anything and everything left that we could, we gave them all attention to hear them say nice things, and the media happily gave a platform to those who were willing to help tear Elvis down off the pedestal his fans put him on, too. I think, at the end of the day, people are looking for understanding about what happened. Many would like to take their sides and lay moral judgment on all of them and everything they've said or did, as though talking about who was or wasn't at fault for what happened would change things or help us understand what happened any better. But we weren't there, and never can go back and be there. Some were good, some were bad, some just happened to kinda be there because Elvis wanted or needed them for whatever reason. The only sure truth is that Elvis died regardless of all of them - which is a tragedy. And they're all just background characters who've taken up too much time on center stage. And now that most of them have left, I think it's about time to bring the curtain down.

Ok, I’m putting on my old accounting hat for a minute.

The IRS having its own free direct file program is sorely, sorely necessary. One of the main reasons is because the IRS already has all of the information you’re reporting, especially if you’re like most Americans and your taxes are uncomplicated or change little from year to year or both. There’s no reason to fill out a bunch of forms telling them what they already know. It’s been proposed, at least once that I know of but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s more than that, where the IRS would send you something every year with your tax info already filled out, you look it over and make changes if necessary, and then e-sign and e-file. The whole process should take less than twenty minutes for most people and it shouldn’t cost a thing, especially because for most people, it’s mandatory.

A step up from basic Turbo Tax was $70 this past tax season. Many people need this version for something CPAs call “above-the-line” deductions and credits. You can claim these (if you qualify) whether you take the standard deduction or if you itemise, and they’re really valuable because they can take out a major chunk of income that would otherwise be taxable. There’s a bunch of them, so I won’t list them all, but two of the most common ones are for tuition expenses and student loan interest.

You had to buy the $70 version if you wanted access to the tax forms related to above-the-line deductions. Tax forms, it should be noted, the IRS provides for free every single year. You can’t even fill out the forms yourself in Turbo Tax if you know how and want to save money, because they just…won’t be there. Last I checked, that’s practically next door neighbours to extortion.

Because what the bigwig at Intuit was warning about with “harm” was trying to freak people out about not knowing how to do their taxes, and thinking they’re going to get audited. Guys, gals and nonbinary pals, audits are extremely rare outside of certain tax brackets, and more likely than not, you aren’t in one of those brackets. There are always a number of returns selected every year for random audits, but I guarantee you the IRS doesn’t have the funding, time and/or manpower to do this on a large scale.

The worst that will happen if you screw up your taxes is a letter from the IRS asking you to either clarify or send documentation. That’s it. If you really mess it up because you don’t know what you’re doing, guess what! They see that a lot and you have available to you the bona fide error defence. Like, if you made the error in good faith, and you weren’t trying to cheat or knowingly claim something you’re not entitled to, the IRS is like, cool, that happens sometimes, let’s just get this fixed, see if you owe us or we owe you, and be done with it. Of course it sucks to owe on taxes, but they’ll work with you if you ask.

Taxes look scary, but they’re really simple for most people, and every single tax form comes with detailed instructions including multiple examples of what goes on every single line of the form, specifically so you can do them yourself and not have to pay for help. My only tip is make sure to keep the best financial records you can. It’s not easy, and it does take work, but it can become a habit like anything else. That, and if you don’t have a lot of money but still need to file taxes, lots of places have volunteer programs like VITA where accounting students (the ones who will go on to be CPAs) can help you file your taxes. And, as a reminder, all of this info is at the Federal level, because most states have their own taxing jurisdictions and rules, but many of them are based on the Federal tax code and you can still receive help from local programs, usually.

Turbo Tax, though somewhat easy to use, is basically one of the biggest scams ever. I once tried to use H&R Block’s software for a tax class project, and it was so unintuitive and unusable that I ended up downloading the forms I needed from the IRS and did it by hand. And that was when I was actually taking tax as part of my accounting education. I think now the PDFs might even do the math for you, I’m not sure.

This has been a long time coming and I couldn’t be more excited for you guys. People who don’t know how to do their taxes deserve better.
