2020 Expo Dubai Entry Canopy: WonderCool

2020 Expo Dubai Entry Canopy Design
29 September 2021
Design: Woods Bagot UAE
Dubai Expo Entry Canopy : WonderCool
This is a beautiful installation among a host of amazing exhibits at one of the world’s best displays of the future of architecture and design.
Kaynemaile’s ‘WonderCool’ greets visitors at Dubai World Expo 2020
Canopy shields visitors from desert heat while providing calming sensory experience
NEW YORK SEPTEMBER, 2021. The first spectacle of architectural design to be encountered by the expected 25 million visitors to Dubai World Expo is the soaring kinetic shade canopy over the visitor arrivals hall.
The result of a collaborative design with Woods Bagot Architecture and Kaynemaile, the creators of architectural composite mesh systems, this 130,000 ft2 shade canopy acts as a passive heat management system for visitors waiting in 100-degree heat for security checks.
By day, the Kaynemaile canopy offers a cooling 70% shade protection for the visitors queuing to enter the World Expo, coupled with a calming sensory experience generated by the fluid movement of the 55 overhead screens running the length of the 60m long arrival hall.
This kinetic movement triggers not only air passage throughout the space, but also creates an interplay of shadow and light both on the ground and throughout the mesh layers overhead. Kaynemaile call this ‘the WonderCool Effect,’ bringing life and movement to static architectural spaces.
By night, an entirely different experience emerges as the canopy comes to life exhibiting dynamic light shows utilising the defusing and reflective qualities of the Kaynemaile mesh.
With 192 nations exhibiting in this once-in-five-year World Expo event, the leading architects, creatives, and constructors see this as “the Olympic Games of architecture and construction.”
“This is no ordinary shade canopy solution,” says Kaynemaile CEO and creative director Kayne Horsham. “As the ‘first impression’ installation at Dubai World Expo entrance, it needed to be visually dramatic and highly functional to reflect this international display of elite architectural creativity that is synonymous with this global exhibition.”
Kaynemaile was selected for this mammoth design, manufacturing, and installation task after 12 different traditional woven textiles and glass fibre materials failed in field testing for endurance in hot, dry, and windy conditions.
The New Zealand-based company has built and international reputation for its ‘can-do Kiwi’ approach to large-scale design challenges, coupled with an in-depth understanding of kinetic forces and how to maximize the unique flexural properties of its seamless material.
“The arc of our evolution over 15 years has been creating and patenting a manufacturing process through to delivering highly effective custom architectural solutions at scale throughout the world,” says Horsham.
Kaynemaile won ‘best new architectural product’ at the NYCxDesign Awards in 2019 and is installed on building exteriors as well as interiors in several U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Seattle, Detroit, Columbus, Atlanta, and New York. Internationally Kaynemaile has provided design solutions in Australia, China, Dubai, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and Vietnam.
Several U.S. installations are on car park building exteriors. A unique element of Kaynemaile is its solar reduction benefits to both the building it protects and indirectly the surrounding urban area (aka the Urban Heat Island). By protecting the building mass from direct sunlight and not restricting the cooling effects of air movement, Kaynemaile significantly reduces the total energy costs required to cool a building in hot climates.
The three-dimensional mesh structure means a high proportion of the mesh surface area is always in shade, giving a cooling effect as the air passes through the cross-sectional open area. It significantly reduces both radiant and thermal conductive heat from entering the building envelope by up to 70%. Unlike steel mesh products which act as conductive energy stores, Kaynemaile mesh remains at a near ambient temperature, thus protecting the building and surrounding environment from heat conduction.
In October 2019, only 12 months before the Covid-delayed Expo was scheduled to open, Kaynemaile was approached by Mace Group UAE, the technical consultants for the client Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). After validating their mesh as the only suitable material for this project, Kaynemaile then worked with Woods Bagot Architecture to co-develop and engineer a solution. After a four-month design process, the canopy was custom produced over three months in New Zealand at Kaynemaile’s precision manufacturing facility in the capital city Wellington in four high performance exterior colours to reflect the palette used throughout the space.
Kaynemaile mesh is crafted from lightweight engineering grade polycarbonate using their own patented injection moulding process. It is 100% recyclable and aligns with the circular economy approach to design and manufacturing. The inspiration for the innovative architectural product came from Kayne Horsham’s role as Weta Workshop Art Director for Creatures, Armor, and Weapons on the Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. Horsham was responsible for designing and prototyping all the armor systems used in making the films and became captivated by kinetic and visual effects of this ancient material.
For Dubai World Expo Kaynemaile have also conceptualised, designed, and created the living build façade of the New Zealand Pavilion located in the Sustainability District.
Unlike most of the 192 World Expo country pavilions which are destined for removal or redevelopment after the event closes, the DWTC arrival hall is considered a ‘legacy installation’ which means it will continue to create moments of wonder for many other events held at this massive convention centre and offer a cool space for those who pause and admire what is being called Kaynemaile’s ‘WonderCool’ canopy.

Why Vape Pens are So Valuable
Some of the most popular vaporizers you´ll find on today´s market are designed to look somewhat like pens. These vape pens might look simple in appearance but they can certainly go a long way when it comes to providing you with the best vapors you could ever ask for.
A Simple Design
A huge part of what makes vape pens so valuable is that they are designed with some very simple and easy to use designs. These pens are made with designs that can be drawn from like what you´d get out of a cigarette.
The big difference is that you obviously won´t have to worry about the toxic materials that come with traditional cigarettes. The organic stuff that you take in from a vape pen will make it a much more beneficial product to use.
Easy to Activate
It doesn´t take much for you to activate such a pen either. The thing is that it works with a simple switch in most cases. This can be activated on the side or base of the pen to turn on the heater.
This should be powered by a rechargeable battery. You´ll have to make sure the battery is fully charged so you will have a better time with setting up something that is easy to maintain.
Easy to Fill
It does not take much for you to fill one of these pens in either. This can be designed with a system that uses an opening in the middle of the pen to keep it active and ready to use. It should be relatively easy to maintain.
It can even be paired with a good stirring stick to make it easier for you to mix things inside your pen. This will give you something that is easy to prepare and will not be too hard to set up no matter what you want to add out of it. You might need to add water or another compound to go with your plant material but it´s worth taking a careful look at.
You should think about vape pens for what you´ve got to enjoy. This will give you something that is enjoyable and appealing for whatever you might be interested in getting for vaporization needs.

Cities Offer Land to Host Hyperloop Tests
After President Emmanuel Macron scrapped plans for a high-speed rail connection to Limoges, a city in central France, local entrepreneur Fabien Thibaut picked up his phone to call Elon Musk and talk about the Hyperloop — Musk’s idea for superfast trains zooming in tubes.
“This kind of project is essential for a city like ours,” said Thibaut, one of many in France who wants to bring home a piece of Tesla founder Musk’s idea. “We have nothing here — this would bring companies, jobs, tourism.”
In the country that invented high-speed TGV trains and the supersonic Concorde plane, Thibaut had no trouble drumming up support from others including the deputy mayor. But with the government keen on cutting public spending, officials in cities like Limoges, Orleans and Toulouse are seeking cheaper approaches to futuristic transport, pitching themselves as hotbeds for testing.
While they can’t put fat checks on the table, French cities are relying on handouts of real estate, tax cuts for engineering talent, and some limited subsidies to attract Hyperloop-inspired projects.
“Any Hyperloop project will need government support whatever happens,” said Serhiy Yarusevych, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “There are no breakthroughs required on the technology side. What will matter is the funding for land, infrastructure and R&D.”
Jules Verne
Musk’s idea isn’t new — French novelist Jules Verne imagined pneumatic pods crossing oceans in tunnels at 930 miles per hour a century and a half ago — but since he laid out the concept of the Hyperloop in 2013, a flurry of initiatives has emerged.
Musk’s space company SpaceX has organized student competitions to build prototypes, while British tycoon Richard Branson is backing the troubled Virgin Hyperloop One, which is itself working with German automaker BMW AG in Dubai. Two other Los Angeles startups, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies and Arrivo, also are developing similar concepts.
So while the Tesla founder never returned Thibaut’s call, a Canadian startup called TransPod did.
TransPod’s technology is based on magnetic propulsion and electrified tracks, moving pods through a vacuum tunnel designed to reduce friction. As with most Hyperloop projects, the bulk of the estimated costs are for deploying infrastructure. Co-founder Sebastien Gendron estimates his company needs 20 million euros ($24.2 million) in financing to complete the Limoges project at the current stage, and says he’ll raise half of that from private investors.
More about TransPod and the race for Hyperloop here
In Limoges, discussions have zoomed in on the prospect of building a 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) test track and a 15-person research center, as TransPod seeks subsidies from government-backed structures in the region as well as from the European Union. Limoges Mayor Emile Roger Lombertie said in an interview TransPod must first find venture capital investors before the city jumps in to help with financing. It’s now providing administrative support.
TransPod got a green light from another local authority to use retired rail tracks free of cost. The fate of the project is hanging on a decision by authorities about whether an environmental study is needed, CEO Gendron said.
SpaceTrain
Some 150 miles north, another city, Orleans, also took to the Hyperloop after years of unsuccessful lobbying to get a high-speed link to the French capital. The mayor’s office reached out to a French entrepreneur called Emeuric Gleizes who’s aiming to develop an air train by 2025.
While there’s little chance Orleans will offer up a chunky jackpot for his SpaceTrain, Gleizes is hoping to get free access to 18 kilometers of unused train tracks in the region to test a prototype, in a deal similar to TransPod’s in Limoges. To reduce development costs, SpaceTrain ditched the idea of a tunnel and instead will move carbon-fiber shuttles carrying as many as 40 passengers at 540 kilometers an hour using a method based on air cushions, often employed by industrial companies to move heavy objects.
Orleans also rang up a startup from California called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, or HTT, which has made announcements about planning a 6.2-mile Hyperloop route in Abu Dhabi and a research lab in Brazil. In southwestern France, Toulouse, the home of planemaker Airbus SE and heaps of aeronautics experts, is preparing to host an experiment by HTT.
“France is one of the best European countries when it comes to supporting startups and innovation,” HTT co-founder Dirk Ahlborn said. “Of course France isn’t the country where everything happens the fastest — if the Emirates wants something, for example, if will happen.”
WWII Bombs
In France, Ahlborn is eyeing public funding for innovation, and said HTT will hire 15 people at a research lab in Toulouse. Local authorities have awarded HTT access to a former army base with a free lease that spans over 40 years, in exchange for refurbishment and de-pollution work, including removing bombs from World War II.
The goal is to put together by the end of the year a track that’s 320 meters long that has tubes sitting on pylons almost 6 meters high. The installation could later be extended to 1 kilometer.
HTT, which missed a deadline to open a test center in California two years ago, says the Toulouse system could be ready within three years. So far, grey tubes about 13 feet high have been hauled by truck from Spain to Toulouse.

University of Milan New Science Campus

University of Milan New Science Campus Design
18 Dec 2020
New University Campus in Milan building design
Design: CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota
Location: MIND-Milano Innovation District, Milan, Italy
A University Campus, Reimagined
International design and innovation practice CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and a team led by Australian real estate group Lendlease have won the international competition to design the University of Milan’s new science campus. Located in the MIND-Milano Innovation District, a 1-million-square-meter (10 million square feet) innovation park whose masterplan was also developed by CRA, the new campus is set to open in 2025.
The campus will extend over 190,000 square meters (2 million square feet) and will serve approximately 23,000 researchers and students specializing in natural and formal sciences at the University of Milan. The design, developed by CRA in collaboration with architect Italo Rota, revolves around a network of green courtyards, a series of uninterrupted walking paths (“common ground”) at different heights, and five brick buildings. It also features a large central square with an adjacent lake.
The buildings pay tribute to the Ca’ Granda, the 15th-century brick building designed by the Renaissance architect Filarete, which today hosts the central seat of the University of Milan. The facades have been designed with an innovative construction technique, with each brick individually positioned by a robotic arm and treated as a pixel within a large-scale bas-relief. The result will be a three-dimensional tapestry with textual and visual content.
The project’s main typological features – the courtyards and the “common ground” – are also inspired by the Ca’ Granda, which was the closest realization of Filarete’s vision for a utopian city that he called Sforzinda. The “Campus 2.0” reinterprets Filarete’s design principles, albeit with 21st-century digital technologies and new approaches to teaching and learning.
“Recent data analyses of human interaction on academic campuses have shown that there is a direct correlation between the physical proximity of researchers and scientific output,” says Carlo Ratti, founding partner of CRA and director of the Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: “In other words, human interaction is an essential component of the discovery process. The recent pandemic, which forced scholars to live and work for months on end in isolation, only reinforced the importance of physical space. Our ‘Campus 2.0’ design elaborates on Filarete’s thinking from almost 500 years ago to create a testing ground that will promote interaction among diverse communities.”
“Filarete’s utopia is often visualized with the eight-pointed star shape of Sforzinda, his ideal city. However, if you zoom in and take a closer look at the design, you can appreciate other compelling features,” says architect Italo Rota, the project’s creative consultant. “Filarete thought that architecture should focus on durability, simplicity, and affordable technical sophistication.
He wanted his buildings to become the backdrop of a new humanism, blurring the boundaries between private and public spaces. At the new Campus in Milan, we strive to realize Filarete’s utopia, on the very site where six years ago, millions of people from all over the world met for the World Expo.”
One of the project’s defining features is the “Common Ground”, a public space that winds its way across the Campus. This uninterrupted set of walkways and crossings connect the buildings and meanders across courtyards. The “Common Ground” allows people to walk outdoors all year long – under a canopy or portico – over a length of more than 1,200 meters (4,000 feet).
The path continues inside the buildings, with an additional 800 meters (2,700 feet) of accessible walkways at the mezzanine level. The “Common Ground” serves to reinforce the connection between the Campus and the surrounding MIND neighborhood, fostering interaction between the academic community, and the companies and R&D centers that operate in the innovation district.
The campus also features almost 100,000 square meters (1 million square feet) of greenery, including terraces and hypogeum gardens located below the ground level. Each of the five courtyards will showcase a different landscape from Northern Italy, while the central square and lake can accommodate large events.
UNIMI Design – Building Information
The project of the new campus for the science faculties of the University of Milan is located within the MIND-Milan Innovation District in the site where Expo 2015 was held. CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati produced the overall architectural concept for the real estate group Lendlease, and a task force whose member companies include:-
Starching S.r.l. (Architectural Project), Manens-Tifs S.p.A. (Gardening Project), Redesco Progetti S.r.l (Structural Project), Emilio Pizzi Team Architects S.r.l. (Space Planning), Dr. Geol. Pietro Simone (Geological Report). CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati
CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati is an international design and innovation practice based in Turin, Italy and New York City. Drawing on Carlo Ratti’s research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the office is currently involved in many projects across the globe, embracing every scale of intervention – from furniture to urban planning.
Among recent designs, there are the Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020, the CapitaSpring skyscraper in Singapore, the MEET Digital Arts Center in Milan, the curatorship of the “Eyes of the City” at the 2019 Bi-City Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism of Shenzhen, the redesign of the Agnelli Foundation HQ in Turin. In March 2019, CRA initiated CURA pods (Connected Units of Respiratory Ailments), a global open-source initiative aimed to convert shipping containers into plug-in Intensive-Care Units for COVID-19 patients.
CRA is the only design firm whose works have been featured three times in TIME Magazine’s “Best Inventions of the Year” list – respectively with the Digital Water Pavilion in 2007, the Copenhagen Wheel in 2014, and Scribit in 2019. In the last years, the office has been involved in the launch of Makr Shakr, a startup producing the world’s first robotic bar system, and Scribit, the write&erase robot. www.carloratti.com
