I have returned from vacation!

It's been so. Good.

Madeira is gorgeous. Everything is green and growing, with different kinds of plants, depending on which side of the island and elevation you are. Even on the mountain tops, the yellow broom was in full bloom. The weather is unpredictable, but almost always a flavour of moderate. All of our tour guides made a point to explain that Madeira doesn't have one climate, but is a patchwork of micro-climates, so you can drive through one tunnel/over one ridge and suddenly it goes from windy, cloudy 19°C to calm, sunny 24°C (and the sun is strong - always wear sunscreen). The sea is gorgeous and you can see it from almost everywhere, albeit there are few opportunities to go for a swim as the coast is mostly cliffs and rocks.

We spent most of our time staying at a place in Funchal and doing organised tours and trips out of the city. Funchal itself has a bus system that makes it easy to get around town without a car. We did do a lot of walking, but you appreciate having an alternative to cover a distance of not even two kilometres by bus when it comes with a difference in height of 500 metres. Outside of Funchal... well, there are several bus companies, covering different parts of the island, but these overland buses only run a handful of times a day and most of the bus stops and schedules are impossible to find online. If you don't want to, or can't, rent a car, doing tours our of Funchal is by far your best option to see Madeira. We finished our vacation with two days in a smaller town up North, and, while ending with a few slow, chill days worked well for us, we were very limited in our options and actually had to use taxis.

Food has been a mixed bag for me. There is so much fresh produce growing all over the island, and the fruit is delicious, but restaurants and the ever-present snack bars focus almost exclusively on meat and fish. Funchal at least offers plenty of options for vegetarians, but even there I couldn't find a place with Madeiran vegetable dishes. I assume it's the same trend as everywhere else: The traditional vegetable dishes are/were poor people food and got sidelined with increased wealth. Either way, I was lucky to be a flexitarian who can eat bolo do caco or a chicken or ham sandwich rather than a proper vegetarian.

The Madeirans do like to drink. Poncha (Aguardente de Cana (white sugarcane rum), sugar, and fruit is everywhere, especially in the original Pescador (with lemon; the perfect drink to keep the fishermen warm at sea and ply them with Vitamin C to ward of scurvy) and Regional (lemon and orange; sweeter than Pescador for those soft city folks), plus Madeira wine, local beer, a very nice, refreshing local apple cider, and all kinds of different liquors, rums, and I even found Madeiran gin for my collection.

Also, I really want to go back (and ideally at a time when I've not been struggling with health problems for months prior and can do proper hikes). Usually, after a big vacation, I do a mental check mark next to that destination and start dreaming about where to go next time, but, yeah, Madeira is definitely worth a second visit.

Southbank Centre Food Market 

Open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the Southbank Centre Food Market is a convenient choice for tourists. It’s moments from the London Eye and Royal Festival Hall. 

Stalls represent British classics such as scotch eggs, sausage rolls, and Cornish pasties. Typical dishes cooked at the covered market include Spanish paella, rock oysters from Essex, gourmet sausage rolls, curries from South Asia and Southeast Asia, and traditional apple crumble. 

There are several bars where you can sit down with an ale or glass of wine. In fact, these are the perfect destination for a date night while staying at Central London hotels.

Vancouver

May 12

Another gloriously sunny day but with a gentle sea breeze - just right for a foot slog around Stanley Park!

We set off just after 9am and strolled down Robson Street to the Safeway supermarket. Food prices are high here but we managed to buy bread, cheese, crisps and tomatoes for lunch without quite breaking the bank.

From there it was just a short stroll to our destination - undoubtedly one of the most amazing urban parks in the world. Stanley Park is 100 acres of forests and lakes and a seven miles sea walk path and cycleway around the outside, which we decided to tackle.

After walking round part of Beaver Lake and then stopping to see amazing totem poles that stand 30-40ft tall,we set off against a backdrop of stunning scenery, with snow-capped mountains towering above the skyscrapers of North Vancouver across Vancouver Harbour.

For most of the way there were steep cliffs on the land side so we didn’t see any of the wildlife that lives in the woods - apart from a few of the beautiful jet black squirrels that live here - although there were signs warning to beware of coyotes (the advice given is to stand your ground with your legs and arms out to make yourself look bigger and shout 'go away Mr Coyote' at the top of your voice!)

We did though see plenty of birds along the shoreline including blue herons, cormorants and, of course, seagulls, together with tiny sand martins that live in the sea walls.

On the way we saw a statue that looked very like the little mermaid in Copenhagen but was in fact a girl in a wetsuit!

Just before we walked under the Lions Gate suspension bridge, we stopped to take pictures of the famous Siwash Rock, which is meant to be an ancient North American warrior who was turned to stone as a 'reward' for his good deeds.

Nearing the end of our long walk we were almost out of water but the thought of the concession stand marked on the map at Third Beach spurred us on.

Unfortunately we arrived to find it closed and the nearby upmarket restaurant wasn't selling takeaway bottles water to the likes of us!

Sat on a bench looking out to sea to eat our lunch and drink the last of our water, then trekked on to Second Beach to find the fast food shack was actually open!

Bought ice lollies - Mark raspberry and Trish mango - and ate them on the beach. Delicious!

Almost at the end of the sea walk we stopped for more refreshments at the Stanley Park Brewhouse. With our legs feeling increasingly tired we criss-crossed across town, stopping at a dollar bargain store to buy a plug which meant we could have a lovely relaxing bath after a rest-up at the hotel. Chatted to the lady at the store about her plans to visit London with her daughter. Told her June and September were probably the best months - she was so thrilled with the advice she gave us free packets of Ferror Rocher and Pringles when we left.

After a lovely bath we walked down to Davie Street for a quick beer before eating at La Belle Patate - a speciality poutine diner. Poutine is a local delicacy - chips and cheese curds smothered in a tasty gravy. Mark had his with Cajun chicken, Trish had a smoked meat sandwich with fries. Very filling!

Strolled back up to Robson Street for a last drink before heading home after a day of 17,500 steps each!

I ranked the following based on taste alone. I made no consideration for ambiance or the general dining experience or whatever. I included meals I got to go. I included food trucks, catered meals, and fast food.

That beet salad is one of the best salads I've had, and it's probably top-ten meal. El Sur remains solid. Eat My Catfish might make the most-disappointing meals.

Summary: Jemma Simmons is offered a position as a local biologist in Georgetown South Carolina, effectively moving her family across the country to a southern-style victorian house. Strange things start to happen and they’re suddenly pulled into a supernatural nightmare. The house loomed over the inlet. Its white exterior had been mossed over in some areas, sharp and green compared to the off-white paneling. Soft orange hummingbird vines hid any blemishes, their green tendons twisting through the delicate lattice that moved over the left side of the home.

There was a worn stone birdbath and a deep green hedge that lined the back of the property. Past that was a deck that moved into the watery swamps that smelled thickly of fish and saltwater. Even through the car, Daisy could smell it, and her chest swelled with the familiarity of the ocean.

Jemma had a smile across her face. It was warm and welcoming and a little prideful. This was their house, even if they hadn’t seen it until now. There were pictures but it didn’t’ give the southern style home any justice, with its wrap-around porch and large bay windows.

The driveway was gravel and she winced as she pulled the front wheels of their SUV over the dip, welcoming the back wheels with another bump. She stared up at the canopy of trees, willows with seeping Spanish moss, and struggled to keep her focus on her movements. Jemma didn’t’ say a thing, if she noticed, too entranced herself.

“I didn’t’ think it would be this,” Daisy trailed off, bringing the car to a stop.

“Magnificent? Archaic? Stepford wife?”

“Yes,”

She settled for all of the descriptions. She had always wanted a big home and this was a far cry from their two-bedroom in Los Angeles. It was half the price too. There was enough room for her own office and a library because even Ayla enjoyed curling up and flipping through her mothers' books.

Daisy could imagine a tire swing and a nice coat of paint, and the sweet southern breeze seeping through the back screened-in sunroom. She glanced back at the girl, her head leaning against the window and soft rhythmic breaths filling the silence. The jostling of the car hadn’t deterred her from sleep, and neither did the sudden attention trained on her.

“Beautiful too. Kind of… haunted-looking?”

“Oh, don’t start with that. Ghosts aren’t real, and if they are, it’s just”

“Science we don’t’ understand yet, yes sweetheart, I know” Daisy finished her wife’s sentence with a loving smile.

Jemma smiled back and the gesture was warmer than the South Carolina air. She could smell the floral trumpets that lined the wall and gravel crunched under her feet as she emerged from the driver’s side of the car. There was a thick sheen of sweat already forming against her brow.

She rounded to the backseat and opened it with enough gentleness that Ayla didn’t’ stir. She had also become victim to the heat; small whisps of blonde hair clung to her forehead and she breathed in with a little bit more force than before, but still, she didn’t wake from her sleep as Daisy pulled the five-year-old from her car seat and hugged her close.

One shoe had been toed off during the drive here and Ayla’s feet dangled at Daisy’s side as she shifted her to her hip and Jemma shouldered the overnight bag that they had packed for all three of them. They knew it would be a long trip, and it had been, but the moving truck hadn’t beat them here and they figured they would make do with a duffel bag of clothes most worn.

“Darn, I must have the keys here somewhere” Jemma mumbled after they braved the aching steps and stood under the slightly shaded porch. It would be nice for rocking chairs, or string lights.

Daisy’s mind was racing with possibility, even when the door did creak open to reveal a dark and cooling interior from the late ’50s. It had vast cherrywood flooring and a stained-glass side window that caught the sun and drowned the grained wood in color.

There was a long oak staircase and a dining room that had an old table in its center, but no chairs. At least Daisy considered it to be a table. It was covered in a white sheet that was equally covered in dust. Jemma closed the door behind them and looked up at the vaulted ceiling that seemed to stretch until the second-floor landing.

Ayla shifted in her arms and gripped her little hand around the excess fabric of the blue cotton button-down that Daisy wore. She whimpered; nose pressed close to the inside of her mother's neck. The cold had gotten to her and Daisy didn’t want to admit that it instantly dried any damp part of her skin.

“It’s charming,” Jemma sounded out “Needs some love, but certainly not something we didn’t’ account for.”

“Needs some light too,” Daisy said as she stepped further into the house.

The living area was a lot better; it swam with that very light that she was hoping for. She figured that they would set up the air mattress in the trunk right in this room. There were already floral print curtains that could be drawn to keep the nightly creatures from peering in, and the warmth flowing through the two bay windows had begun to thaw her skin.

There was another white sheet, covering a blocky object like a tacky ghost. “A bookcase?”

“A piano,” Jemma corrected “You can see the pedal under the right edge. It’s an old one too. I can’t imagine why anyone would leave it behind.”

Daisy didn't want to entertain the idea of anything causing abandonment other than pure laziness. She wouldn't want to lug a piano onto a moving truck in this kind of Southern heat either. Her arms were starting to ache- Ayla wasn’t as small as she used to be, and she got the nagging urge to wake the girl.

Jemma seemed to read her mind as she always did. She carefully pulled the girl into her arms resulting in a tiny nose scrunch and a little groan, but still not fully awake. Traveling must have taken it completely out of the kid, and truthfully, it took everything out of the mothers too.

They had eaten at the hotel this morning, Daisy demolishing three pancakes while Jemma limited herself to a banana and a few bites of Ayla’s slowly softening cereal. She didn’t’ do well with the winding mountains of Tennessee and had clenched her eyes the entire time, gripping what she called the panic handle.

Other than that, they had shared a bag of trail mix and Daisy squeezed the untouched applesauce pouch into her mouth to quell the rumbling in her stomach, but that had been at the border of North and South and she was getting agitated with hunger now. She considered Jemma and her daughter were more than halfway there themselves.

“I think I saw a Chinese restaurant on the way into town,” She offered, rolling her sore shoulder around “What do you say to an old tradition?”

Jemma smiled again, and it brightened the room even more. The first place they rented together didn’t have power yet and it was above a take-out place that had the best Chicken Lo Mein. They lit a bunch of candles and ate on the floor, a fell asleep in each other’s arms despite the less-than-ideal circumstances.

Daisy took this as confirmation and placed a chaste kiss on her wife’s cheek before fishing her car keys from her back pocket again and stepping into the stifling heat. The door fell shut behind her and her stare instantly fell on a woven basket filled with fresh apples and baked muffins. The scent made her stomach plunge even further.

And there was a man, quite a large one, stalking away from the gift. His shoulders had a wide span and his dark skin glistened in whatever sun the trees allowed through. Daisy stifled a smile of her own.

“Thank you!” She called out

The man turned quickly around. His face was kind despite his large stature and he let out a groan. “See, you weren’t supposed to catch me leaving this. It was going to be an anonymous welcome from the community.”

Daisy walked down the front porch and the man met her halfway, that warm expression still on his face. He wore a flannel over a sweat-dampened tank top despite the heat. He was even taller in person, his hands stained in what Daisy could guess is grease.

“It was my wife’s idea, she saw you guys pull in and threw something together last minute. She’s not used to having neighbors.” He let out a soft chuckle “I told her that ya’ll have L.A plates and that’s not how it works there, but she refused to listen.”

“No, it’s really nice, actually. I’m Daisy… like the flower.” She stuck out her hand.

The man’s own engulfed hers entirely, it was calloused but firm “Mack like the- oh hell, the food?”

“Nice to meet you, Mack. We really do appreciate it, I guess Southern Hospitality is a real thing?”

“Oh absolutely. Look- I’ve gotta get back home, we live right across the way, but on that little note wedged between whatever fruit she could scrounge up, is an invitation to dinner tomorrow night. It’s up to you if you want to accept it or not”

32 - Date night gone wrong 23 - “Hey, at least the stars are beautiful tonight, right?”

He’d finally done it. It took months of near-constant reassurances from Yennefer and his brothers that Jaskier, his best friend since kindergarten, liked him. As in like-liked him. Like something a child would say when talking about their crush. Regardless, after months of being told that yes, Jaskier does, in fact, like him, he had asked Jaskier out on a date. 

He had it all planned out, too. They were going to go to a nice restaurant on the boardwalk where Geralt would impress Jaskier by speaking in full sentences (”Be careful or you’ll scare him,” Yennefer had dryly teased). Then they’d go for a walk on the beach, since he knows the coast has a special place in Jaskier’s heart from growing up by it up north. Finally, they’ll settle down in the sand for a bottle of wine and some dessert and Geralt will ask Jaskier to play some music for them on the guitar he keeps in his car. 

However, it seems the universe has it out for him since, before the date has even begun, his cat decided his only nice pair of slacks would be her new scratching post. So he decides to wear his cleanest pair of jeans, which still usually have horse hair on them from the barn. Then, his car won’t start so he is nearly twenty minutes late meeting Jaskier at the restaurant after Jaskier’s shift at the hospital and definitely doesn’t have time to get him any flowers like Geralt wanted to.

Then, when he arrives to The Kingfisher, Jaskier looks like he’s nearly asleep as he sits upon a low wall with his jacket pulled tight around him and his hands buried in his pockets. Geralt curses under his breath, he forgot that Jaskier switched to a 4-3 schedule, 4 days of 12 hour shifts and 3 days off. He’s probably been on his feet all day and Geralt suggested tonight for their date in the hopes that Jaskier might spend the night.

It’s too late now, so Geralt parks and walks up with his hands deep in his pockets and Jaskier jerks awake when greeted. They go inside and find that there was a mixup with their reservation and their table has been given away to another party. The next available table won’t be for another two hours and Geralt scowls but Jaskier just places his hand on Geralt’s shoulder to ease him and suggests they get McDonald’s instead because he could really go for an M&M McFlurry right about now.

Thankfully, the McDonald’s drive-thru is fully functional, but the ice cream machine isn’t so Jaskier doesn’t get his McFlurry, much to his disappointment. Geralt very nearly demands they fix the machine right then and there, just so Jaskier can have something other than settling for his usual order of chicken nuggets and an abhorrent amount of fries. Jaskier just shrugs with a yawn and says it’s fine, he’ll just have some wine and fall asleep in the tub when he gets home.

Which, bingo! Reminds Geralt of the picnic basket he stashed amongst the rocks on the beach so he suggests they take their food to go and they walk along the sand. He suggests Jaskier grab his guitar, only to be told that Jaskier hasn’t been keeping it in his car as often since he heard that heat is bad for the strings so he doesn’t actually have it with him right now.

The beach is much colder than he had been expecting (”It’s the middle of October, Geralt,” Jaskier points out with a laugh) so their food is cold by the time they reach the picnic basket. Which, to his dismay, has been ransacked by seagulls, the blanket yanked out of it and its contents strewn across the sand. 

“Oh, dear, what a mess,” Jaskier muses as he eats one of his cold fries, “It looks like it would have been quite the romantic picnic. Shame it got ruined.”

“No need to point it out,” Geralt snaps, the sum of all of the evening’s failures making him upset and irritable. 

Jaskier looks at him with wide eyes, “Are you alright?”

Geralt growls and kicks at the sand angrily, “Not really! I put a lot of effort into planning tonight so it would be perfect for us. For you! I know I’m not really good at all this-this romantic stuff and you’re tired a lot from saving lives and shit so I thought this would be a good compromise but for fuck’s sake, nothing’s gone right! This is a horrible first date and you’re never going to want to go out with me again.”

Jaskier blinks at him owlishly, “First date? This was a date?”

“Of course it was a date!” Geralt feels his cheeks flood with embarrassment, “I asked you out!”

“Mm, no you texted me ‘do you want to do something on Thursday night, just us?’ and I told you my shift ended at 7 tonight so you told me to meet you at The Kingfisher at 7:30.”

“Right! ‘Just us’, like a date.”

“I figured you meant like how we used to, before our group expanded to include Yen and your brothers and the Aretuza girls.”

Geralt looks miserably at his feet at he mutters, “So, do you not want to date me?”

“Now I didn’t say that,” Jaskier admonishes him and gently hooks his arm through Geralt’s, leading them to the rocks so they can sit down without getting sandy, “You’re absolutely lovely, Geralt, and I’m quite certain I’ve been in love with you since high school. I would be a fool to look a gift horse in the mouth and turn it down because tonight didn’t follow a silly plan.” 

Geralt is torn between continuing to wallow in self-pity and reeling at Jaskier’s casual declaration of love. It’s just that easy? Or at least for Jaskier it is? The crinkle of Jaskier’s McDonald’s bag fills the silence as he quietly munches on his fries, allowing Geralt to brood for a while before he lightly nudges Geralt with his elbow.

“Hey, at least the stars are beautiful tonight, right?” He’s giving Geralt the small, sweet smile that Geralt’s never seen him give anyone else as he takes Geralt’s hand in his own and laces their fingers together, “Can’t fuck that one up.”

Geralt hums, barely sparing a glance for the heavens as he looks at Jaskier beside him, their faces only inches apart. “I suppose not,” he smiles as he relaxes and leans forward, Jaskier moving closer to bring their lips together in a tender kiss under the stars.
