Part Two: More of a Prince

“I’ll see you in the morning,” Eddie said, opening the door of his van for me.

“Eddie, you really don’t have to drive me to school every day. It’s a 10-minute walk, I can manage.”

“I’m sure you can, but I’d prefer knowing you’re safe,” he said, more serious than I’d heard before.

“Thanks. For chauffeuring me everywhere and for the milkshakes.”

“Anything for you, princess.”

He waited until I was safe inside to pull out, waving as he drove away. I put my things away and collapsed on my bed, groaning as my phone rang.

“Hello?” I answered.

“Hey, babe. We have a slight problem. Are you busy?” Steve asked, slightly out of breath.

“Russian soldiers slight or Dustin fell off his bike slight?” I questioned, sitting up.

“The second one. There was an accident and there is a lot of blood, and I don’t really know what to do.”

“Where are you?”

“Hawkins High. Back parking lot. Thank you,” he said before hanging up.

“What did you get into, Steve Harrington?” I whispered as I grabbed my purse and started running toward the school. I turned the corner into the back lot, seeing Dustin and Lucas lying on the blacktop, laughing weakly.

“Steve?” I called as I approached.

“Oh, thank you,” he mumbled, jogging toward me. “They were playing some game and got spooked by something, I think? They won’t really tell me what happened, and they won’t let me take them to the hospital.”

I nodded, handing him my bag and kneeling by them. I noticed that most of Dustin's blood was from a gash below his hairline.

“Steve, I need something to stop the bleeding. Is there any cloth in my purse?” I heard him open it before handing me a white shirt. “Sorry, Eddie,” I thought before pushing it against Dustin’s head. “Hold this here, keep firm pressure,” I instructed Dustin before turning to Lucas. “Where are you hurt?”

He held up his arm, a deep cut spanning his forearm.

“Steve?” I asked, looking up at him. “He needs stitches.”

“No hospitals!” Dustin and Lucas yelled.

“Fine, fine,” I said, thinking. “Can you get us into the school, Steve?”

“Let me go check the doors. If they’re locked, I can’t, not without breaking in anyway,” he said before running toward the building.

“What happened?” I asked Dustin.

“You can’t tell Steve,” he said. I nodded, and he started talking again, “We were playing a new game that Eddie showed us, I don't remember the name of it. Neither one of us realized Jason and his goons were here until they came out and started hitting us.”

“Jason Carver did this?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Lucas said slowly, watching me from the corner of his eye.

I clenched my jaw, looking back to the building to see Steve running back, shaking his head.

“I have the stuff to do it at my place, can you drive them?” I asked.

Steve nodded, helping Dustin up and into the car as I did the same with Lucas. I had one side of my shirt pressed against his arm to stop the bleeding.

“Dustin gets shotgun,” I said, climbing into the back with Lucas to keep pressure on his cut. His blinks were getting heavy. “Stay awake, Lucas, talk to me about your D&D Campaign, basketball, anything.”

He launched into a speech about the current campaign, not stopping until we got to my house and climbed out of the car. We got them into the house and sat them down at the dining table.

“Steve, get towels and the first aid kit. Both are in the closet in the hallway,” I instructed.

He returned quickly with the first aid kit and a handful of towels. He pressed one of the towels against Dustin’s head, tossing the Hellfire shirt into the kitchen sink. I laid a towel under Lucas’s arm, pulling the alcohol and stitching supplies from the first aid kit.

“This is going to hurt, Lucas,” I said gently, kneeling beside him, “if you feel like you’re going to pass out, don’t fight it, ok?”

He nodded, and I poured the alcohol on his arm, grimacing as he yelled in pain. I started the stitches, noticing that he lost consciousness after the fourth one.

“Dustin, stay awake, man,” Steve said to Dustin. “What does he need? The bleeding stopped.”

“I don’t think he has a concussion, but we need to be careful. Just put a bandage on his head and we’ll keep an eye on him. If he falls asleep, just make sure to check on him and wake him every hour or so.”

Steve placed a bandage on Dustin’s head, tossing two bloody towels into the sink. He helped Dustin to the couch before filling the sink with cold water and hydrogen peroxide. I put the last stitch in Lucas’s arm, the twelfth one. I replaced the towel under his arm with a clean one before wiping off the excess blood and wrapping it. Steve carried him to the couch before coming back to the dining room.

“Thank you,” he said, picking up the loose first aid kit supplies and placing them back in the box.

“Of course. Glad they’re ok.”

“Mind if we crash here tonight? I’ll take them home first thing in the morning.”

“That’s fine. You can take the guest room if you want.”

Steve nodded, thanking me again. The doorbell rang, and I looked at Steve, who shrugged and followed me to the door. I looked through the peephole, relaxing before pulling the door open.

“Whoa! What happened?” Eddie asked as he saw me, stepping across the threshold and gently grabbing my face.

“Dustin and Lucas got hurt,” I whispered, tilting my head toward the couch. He looked over, saw the bandages littering their bodies, then saw Steve standing behind me.

“You ok, man?” Eddie asked him, pulling away from me and closing the door.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Wish I’d been there when they got hurt. They won’t tell me what happened. I’m gonna head to bed though, we’ll be out of here first thing.” He walked down the hall, and Eddie turned his attention to me again.

“Let’s get you cleaned up?” He phrased it as a question, giving me an out.

I nodded as I grabbed his hand and led him to my bedroom and attached bathroom.

“Swanky digs,” he said as I grabbed some clothes and set them on the vanity top. He grabbed a washcloth and a bar of soap from my shower, setting them by the sink. “You change, and wash any blood off your skin, then let me know when you’re done.”

I stepped into the bathroom, pulling the bloody clothes off and washing with the washcloth as I went. I opened the door, carrying my bloody clothes to the kitchen and adding them to the sink. Returning to my room, Eddie was sitting on my bed, his boots and jacket discarded by my window.

“C’mere,” he said, holding his arms out. I climbed onto the bed and fell into his arms. “You alright, princess?”

“Not really,” I whispered. “It could’ve been so much worse.”

“But it wasn’t, because you and Steve were there,” he said, hugging me and rubbing my back.

“Why’d you come back?” I asked, voice muffled by Eddie’s shirt where I had my face buried in his chest.

“You left your history binder in my van. I’m assuming you’re not going to do your homework though?”

I laughed, shaking my head and cuddling closer to Eddie.

“Can I stay here tonight?” he asked. I nodded against him, and he moved to lie down, pulling me to lie beside him, tucked into his side.

“Are you ok? You seem- I don’t know,” I shrugged at the end, failing to find the right word.

“Post-terrified? ‘Cause that’s exactly how I feel. When you opened that door covered in blood, I swear my heart stopped.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize, princess. I didn’t know what was happening and I was scared, that’s not your fault.”

We lay in silence for a few minutes until Eddie asked, “Wanna skip school tomorrow? Get a long weekend?” I shook my head, already planning what I was going to do to Carver tomorrow. “It’s really late, I don’t think you should go. We all could use a day,” he said, pushing a piece of hair behind my ear. I finally nodded, wrapping my arms around him and trusting he was right. “Get some sleep, princess,” he said, kissing my temple before I drifted off.

I woke up to someone knocking on my door. I wiggled out of Eddie’s arms, opened the door, and saw Dustin standing there.

“Thanks for your help. We’ll see you at Hellfire, right?”

I nodded as Steve came up behind him.

“Go get in the car, Dustin. Thanks again for last night. I called Keith and got us both the night off,” Steve said as he pushed Dustin towards the door.

I smiled my thanks and hugged him before he walked out at the sound of his horn honking. “I’m coming, you little buttheads!”

I turned around to return to bed and saw Eddie smiling at me.

“Have I ever told you you’re a really pretty princess?” he asked, morning voice in full effect.

I fought a losing battle against my ever-growing smile and shook my head as I sat back down.

“Well, you are. Pretty, gorgeous, breathtaking, the list continues.” I turned and hid my face in his shoulder. I felt his shoulder move as he laughed, his hand rubbing circles on my back. I spoke quietly into his shoulder, even though I knew he couldn’t hear me.

“What was that, princess?” he asked, gently lifting my chin with his ring-clad fingers.

“I said, you’re more of a prince than you realize,” I repeated quietly.

A huge grin broke out across Eddie’s face. He pulled me into a hug, collapsing on top of me. “You are something special, princess.”

We spent the day together reading, watching movies, listening to music, and eating most of the snacks I had in the top cabinet, hidden from Dustin. When he went home at the end of the day, my focus shifted entirely to Jason Carver and how I would make him pay.

Stop Look and Listen

So I’m in the park, yeah, got a thermos full of pu-erh tea, got my Kobe Libra Colour, found a comfy bench, settled down to read. It’s not a big park, some benches, a few trees, a playground, but it’s close to home, and there’s usually people in it. Good for me: I enjoy living alone, but I also like to get out of my tiny flat. I’m a semi-regular fixture. I get nods and smiles from the neighbours. It’s pleasant.

Now mostly I don’t want to talk to people. No offense, people are great, but I communicate for a living, and I talk and teach all day, so after work I want some quiet time.

That’s why I read. It slows down my brain. Happy medium. Nowhere near the stimulation of a computer screen, needs a bit more attention than watching television. I’m not claiming that it’s meditation, because it’s not, but it’s my kind of altered state, you know? I haven’t quite recaptured the kind of escape from reality I used to get when I was a kid, but yeah, it’s a good way to wind down.

The e-reader I use has a lighted screen, so even as the sun goes down and it gets darker, I have no problem reading. At some point the lights in the park turn on. They’re almost bright enough to read by, but I don’t need them.

This park is in the middle of two blocks of flats, next to the street, and catty-corner to two car parks. The community centre and police post are down the ways a bit, there’s a mosque and a temple a little distance away, and there’s a three food places nearby.

Because of where the park is, people are always looking for directions, and I guess the person to ask is the giant, peaceful-looking man sitting on a bench, looking at the piece of plastic in his hands. No one has any idea that I’m reading how Monkey’s being a right pest to the Jade Emperor of Heaven and has just eaten all his best peaches.

So I have these headphones - Anker Soundcore Space Ones. I used to use earbuds, but the trouble with AirPods Pro is that they’re so unobtrusive that people can’t see them. The headphones are great. The reviews mostly agreed that they had pretty good noise cancellation, and with a bit of tweaking in the mobile app, good sound as well. The latter wasn’t a major concern for me as I mostly listen to podcasts, although I did adjust the EQ a little to even out the sound, make it a bit brighter, counteract the bass-heavy and somewhat muddy tuning that the cans come with.

When I’m reading I usually either have white noise going (the sound of rain - something about reading while it’s raining soothes me) or I’m listening to classical music. Can’t listen to podcasts because that would take attention away from the book: I reserve those for when I’m commuting.

But mostly I got the headphones because you can see them. They’re not hidden. They’re not subtle. They are, in fact, fairly big and obvious. I got the blue ones. Black ones would fade into my hair, I think, and there were sort of champagne-coloured ones but they weren’t in stock and I didn’t like them anyway. These blue ones suit me fine, only I managed to get a couple of drops of chocolate sauce on the ear cushion, and even after I wiped them off there’s a couple of brown dots but I can live with that.

So you can imagine me, in the twilight, sitting in the park, with my headphones on, reading my book, pausing occasionally to sip my tea, looking up if I sense someone going past, nodding and smiling at the neighbours, waving at the horde of small boys on bicycles when they go (sometimes when they buy water from the corner shop they have trouble opening the bottles and if I happen to be there they ask me to help so now I regularly wind up twisting open bottles for all of them and in return if they see me they whoop and ring their bells), and mostly having a peaceful enough time because the headphones signal to most people (correctly) that I CAN’T HEAR THEM.

Except for this guy, who stopped, stood next to me (I didn’t notice him) and talked at me, and then I turned, and looked at him, and noticed he was a deliveryman, and he was still talking, and I pulled one ear-cup away from my head (which stops whatever’s playing, oh the wonders of technology) only to hear him ask me, painfully slowly, as though I was some kind of idiot, or someone who doesn’t understand English, where block 123 was. And I’m not an idiot, and my English is far from perfect but more than functional, and the real problem is that I had noise-cancelling headphones on and the sound of the rain going. So I looked up at him (because I was sitting down, and he was standing up, and even then I was close to being at eye-level with him because I am tall and he is not-tall) and asked him to repeat himself.

“Sorry, what?” I said.

And then he asked me again, where block 123 was. That’s when I turned my head, slowly, slowly to one side, till I was looking at the side of the block of flats next to me, where the number of the block was painted, much, much larger than life, exactly the number of the block that he was looking for because I was sitting next to it, and then I pointed to it, and asked, tremulously, as though I wasn’t sure, “Block 123?”

I was so amused I forgot to be annoyed because really, if you can’t see a giant “123” painted on the side of a block of flats while you’re looking for it then I shouldn’t be surprised that he didn’t see the big blue earphones I was wearing. I went back to my book because I wanted to know how Monkey was going to get out from under the mountain that Buddha had plonked on top of him.

My writing so far so you know what your getting into (it's a draft)

I put down my pen and leaned over, opening up Google and searching up Google Maps as Tyler.

“Okay so, I vote we all meet up at a place in the middle of all our homes, so we all bear the same amount of risk getting there.” He said.

I frowned.

“I think we should go somewhere like the hospital,” I said, “it could make for a good base and there's medical supplies there.”

“How about the bakery? I would love a free eclair!” Aiden suggested.

“Jesus, think with your brain for once.” Tyler exclaimed.

“I'm just saying, a sweet treat would cheer us all up!”

“Maybe we could go there after school?” Taylor suggested sounding excited, “head to the park afterwards, you know, de stress!”

“We could but we wouldn't be getting them for free now would we?”

Ben tapped his pen against the table before placing his phone into the center of the table, which showed his notes app and some text that read: We would have to scale a ten foot gate to get to the hospital plus, I don't think that would be a safe journey to make on foot, unless everyone has a bike? Maybe we could make it work that way?

Aidens eyes widened.

“I have a bike as does Ben, that's like the first thing we did when he moved in, we got him one. Honestly I'm jealous of it—”

“I don't have one,” Logan said, rubbing the back of his neck, “I mean I have a scooter, but it's not very fast.”

“I have one but Tyler doesn't.” Taylor said.

“I think that idea could work… if we had a car,” Ashlyn said, “bikes don't have a roof and don't go as fast.”

“This whole thing would be easier if we had a car.” Tyler admitted.

“How about this, we split up, me, Ben, Taylor and Aiden go to the hospital and get supplies alongside an ambulance and afterwards, we meet you all at a central location and we use the ambulance as a mobile base—” I started.

“You know how to drive an ambulance?” Aiden asked.

Oh right, I hadn't told them.

“My sister in law is a paramedic, she could give a crash course.” I shrugged.

“Hell no, not happening,” Tyler exclaimed, “we all meet at one location and then we stay at that one location for as long as we can.”

“We need medical supplies—”

“We can get things from our houses!” Yelled Tyler.

“What, tiny little plasters?” I countered, “the hospitals are secure, they have all the medical stuff we could ever need and tools that double as weapons!”

“Okay then, counter offer, we meet at a location between all our homes and then we all go to the hospital as a group. Now we don't have to leg it in one night, we can take all the time we need, stop off at places on the way—”

Ashlyn opened her mouth to speak, however Tyler got to it first.

“And what? Get killed?”

I sighed as Ashlyn finally got her words in.

“I agree with you both, we need supplies and a secure location however we need that location to be accessible and any transport to be reliable,” she reasoned, “a mobile ambulance would be more than idea however I don't think a crash course will give you enough knowledge to pilot an ambulance properly, plus, we will have to find a way to keep it's fuel topped up and the inside will be pretty cramped.”

I frowned. I hadn't thought about that last part.

“Uh, I have an idea,” Logan said before showing us the Google Maps, “there's a pharmacy that's… around an equal distance away from all our houses, we can meet there, get supplies. After that, I suggest going to The School Bus Graveyard, not straight away of course, we would take our time and plan out our route. Think about it, it has high walls… we don't know if they will be able to climb them, plus, there's things all over the place that we could use to fortify it.”

“That's not bad,” Aiden said, “I'm in.”

“Me too.” Said Taylor.

“Why don't we just fortify the pharmacy?” Tyler asked.

“I don't think there will be enough resources to do so.” Logan said.

Tyler sighed and looked at his sister. He then looked back at the group.

“Fine, I agree with the nerd.”

“What about everyone else?” Ash asked, “personally, I think it's the best idea we've got.”

“A pharmacy isn't a hospital and an ambulance, however it's the closest we can really get.” I nodded.

Ben picked up his phone and typed: I agree with whatever Aiden agrees with.

“Brilliant,” Ashlyn said, “so we meet there… what, within the next two nights?”

Everyone nodded.

‘Wow,’ I thought, ‘we all just agreed on something.’

One of the best things about electric cars in 2023 is that we are now seeing 1st generation models from the “early years” being improved, revised and facelifted. For the early-adopters in the UK’s EV market, we are grateful for those consumers and businesses for having the foresight and courage to invest into all-electric technology in 2018 / 2019 / 2020, when little was known on how good this form of transport would be (and when public charging infrastructure was still in its early inception). And VW’s electric Golf replacement, the ID.3, was first shown to the world in 2016 before being pushed into production in 2019 with deliveries taking place around 2020 around Europe (including the UK). As one would expect, the ID3 was fairly popular, amassing some 11,032 registrations in 2021 (it was the 3rd best-selling EV in the UK) followed by becoming the 4th best-selling UK EV with 9,178 registrations in 2022! Launching with a Pure battery (45 kWh), Pro battery (58 kWh) and Pro S configuration (77 kWh), VW’s all-electric hatchback filled a necessary hole in the UK’s automotive market, which was historically dominated by SUVs and luxury / prestige options. Winning awards, like the Which? Best Buy of 2023 (https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/new-and-used-cars/volkswagen-id-3-2020), does prove that this is very much the zero-emission Golf equivalent.   

 But the “future of driving” is not a completed model and the German group have now confirmed a series of external, integral and technological improvements to this popular EV (see VW - https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/electric-and-hybrid/electric-cars/the-new-id3.html). As the “evolution of electric mobility” continues, the brand have confirmed some truly existing updates including:

  Exterior - new colours such as Dark Olivine Green,     sharper profile at the front together with new tail light clusters and     dynamic turn signals plus IQ.Light LED matrix headlights set to be     offered. New alloy options including the 19” Wellington and 20” Sanya     alloys, a new Exterior Package will allow drivers to add LED matrix     headlights with automatic lighting control, LED tail lights, illuminated     strip between headlights and tinted rear windows. An Exterior Packages     PLUS includes a panoramic roof and sun blind;
