HEY GIRL
Watched / read anything good recently?
was watching dungeon meshi but then that gay ahh bath scene came on and my moms in the room w me so like 💀💀💀💀 reading 1984 rn bcs assignment, im ten pages in bcs i keep fawking playing honkai star rail 😭😭😭 omg, but i was in the midst of watching dil se before i realised i was getting distracted too easily and it was keeping me from enjoying it properly. was only watching it bcs i couldnt find bombay (1995, not the city 💀💀) anywhere. probs bcs nobody gaf abt archiving desi movies 😭😭😭😭 its tough out here, but like for dil se honestly i rlly liked the screenplay and the way it was directed even tho like . i literally only got to the first song of the film 💀💀 even then. also oh my god srk has not a SINGLE dancing bone in his body like ive bitched abt it before but oml hrithik roshan and tiger shroff are actually carrying the reputation of bollywood's male actor's dancing abilities on their back....now if only theyd stop FAWKING taking up propaganda films 😭😭😭
i actually kinda need to leave a separate paragraph for how bad srk dances like its not just when he was young...in chaiyya chaiyya literally EVERYBODY is on beat except him....and it KEELS me because ure telling me u cant keep tempo ??? brother 😭😭😭😭😭 but ok even in the present like, he stays on beat (barely) but hes SO STIFF?? i like saw some clip of him dancing with an actress, it mightve been deepika padukone in happy new year ??? oh my god it was SO bad. he was SO stiff. it KILLED me. bollywood actress go through HELL but sanjay dutt srk and a bunch of other male actors get away with not being able to dance well 😭😭😭😭 my queen kareena kapoor took dance classes before filming k3g yet srk and amitabh bacchan got away w shava shava....Sick and Twisted world we live in like....anyway i actually dk if thalapthy vijay is a bhakt but this is y he solos even tho i have verithanam trauma....sings n dances well etc, this is y bollywood flops consistently actually
pls take that paragraph lightheartedly if ure desi 💔 ok anyway
the god of small things by arundhati roy is good....i only read like 20 pages tho but ik plot 💀💀💀💀 i think the seven moons of maali almeida might also b good, its by shehan karunatilaka
ok last unfinished thing im gna recommend....Hot Tkae but....i liked saltburn...i still have the 2nd half of the movie to finish (stopped some time after the reveal) but again, ik the plot 😭 i still have some problems w it tho but its not rlly abt the hypersexuality. cinematography fucked. 4:3 aspect ratio choice? ATE. SO BADD. but ill also need to finish the film. but tbh its obsessed boy x rich boy trope wasnt rlly handled well in my opinion, micah nemerever's these violent delights solos in that area. and i think the story is flawed
ok NOW. i liked fleabag. actually i LOVED fleabag. think its a masterpiece. both seasons but esp the 2nd one (felt more refined but compared to other shows, s1 SOLOS). the boys s4 is dropping!! invincible s2 was alr i bet the animation studio suffered hard tho bcs wtf was that style change mid season 😭😭😭. and i don't rlly think the direction in which Nolan's character arc is gna go to will turn out that great? also, i loved gerta gerwig's ladybug! its actually crazy how she made ladybug and barbie both . one is amazing. the other is well uhm.
oh also i liked inglourious basterds and pulp fiction . quentin tarantino kinda looks like a walking talking serial killer mugshot tho i saw an interview where he was asked why kill bill had so much violence and was honestly surprised by how girlypop he was. not forgetting him choking diane kruger on set tho !
watched batman begins. it was aight 😭 rewatched matt reeves' batman right after. liked it betterr. i LOVEDDD heartbreak high, s1 and s2 !! usually with shows i only like s1 best, but w heartbreak high i literally ADOREDDD s2, the finale was so good !!! im also watching the gentlemen (the show) rn, and i rllyyy like it hehe. tried watching tick tick boom again bcs I'd actually dropped it midway when it had first released bcs that one scene where she was like "you're thinking of a song rn aren't you" was so stress inducing that I had 2 click away 💀💀 n then i forgot abt it. picked it up again and omg it's actually so good how did I miss it the first time 😭😭😭
oh yeah I also liked the fall of the house of usher . also ! another incompleted thing but im also in the midst of watching the three of us (film). its so good !! i loved the atmosphere and cast performances can't wait 2 see how it turns out :))

LATA & RD & KISHORE - THE FINAL CHAPTER (NEE DHARAMYUDH)! . . . . . . . . -OF THE MYSTERIOUS HEART ATTACKS BOTH KISHORE & RD WERE AFRAID OF! -OF 1985: THE YEAR THAT CHANGED BOLLYWOOD FOREVER!
This strange (below) Aajtak video clip caught my attention, & got me googling & researching a while.
And what came of it was highly interesting to say the least!
As it turns out, Lata Mangeshkar on average sang only 2 songs per year for R.D. Burman all life/career, while he on average composed 36 songs/year for 36 years straight!
https://youtube.com/watch?v=wr-lDgD6V0U
A further cursory glance reveals even more startling facts- Lata Mangeshkar it seems stopped singing for R.D. Burman for the last ~9 yrs of his life/career, after 1985-early 1986 at most, till his death in 1994! All RD films releasing thereafter (’86-’94),bearing Lata’s voice, if pry a bit, either shot/recorded in '85 or early '86 at most!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
P.S : Also- Seems this year 1985 has some strange significance in lives of all 3 best friends-Rajesh Khanna (as explained in blogs pertaining to him), R. D. Burman & Kishore Kumar. For Kishore Kumar, we learn, announced his retirement from Bollywood in May 1985, (at the peak of his demand having just recorded 300 songs in 1984), but his pending work lingered, till his death in Oct '87 from his 2nd heart attack (his first having been received in 1982)! https://indiatoday.in/india-today-insight/story/from-
No one till today for certain knows the exact reason for this most surprising & most illogical & obviously highly emotional retirement decision from Bollywood. But one of the public speculations that's been doing the social rounds since those times, & we don't know if this the real or sole reason, is that it could've been borne of his showdown with his brother-in-law & Leena Chandavarkar's brother Anil Chandavarkar, perhaps sometime in the beginning of 1985, on the sets of Kishore's last directorial venture 'Mamta Ki Chhaon Mein' which he'd begun directing in 1984, in which Anil, who'd also acted in films like 1977's Aafat & 1980's Khanjar earlier, was employed as a production assistant by then, the issue for which has not been posted anywhere online, but that was serious enough in Kishore’s eyes, for getting him publicly thrown out of the film, by his own brother-in-law! And that many people believe, certainly contributed to Anil committing suicide just a few days/months later in early 1985, & leading to Kishore's announcement of retirement from Bollywood, just few days/months later, leaving all work on his own film too, that was 90% complete by then, in the process (& perhaps as we see it, merely focusing on completing his pending assignments for others thereon), (a home production that incidentally did make it to screens in 1989 finally, with Rajesh Khanna making a very special appearance).
Anil Chandavarkar, apart from being Leena Chandavarkar's brother, was also the son-in-law of director Atmaram, as husband of his daughter Anjali.

3. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0151293/trivia/?ref_=nm_dyk_trv
Now another highly curious incident from the very day of Kishore da's heart attack has caught mass attention. Per his wife's statement to the media, Kishore before his death, was looking pale since morning, & post-lunch, lay on his bed, after moving some furniture, & upon inquiry by his wife said, "I am feeling weak". His wife immediately tried calling the doctor, to which Kishore got angry & shouted, "If you call the doctor, I will get a heart attack". His eyed were open & he was breathing out. And just a few moments later, died.
People online have wondered what made Kishore da so wary of the doctors coming to his house then. Others dismiss it as another joke on his part given how he was a habitual jokester. But remember, this was a man clearly experiencing a fatal heart attack just then (as evidenced by the fact that he succumbed to it just few mins later), yet that even in such agony & strife, found the strength to shout out to his wife to not call the doctors, for fear that he may (actually, in his mind) get a heart attack if they came. Isn't this most perplexing & mysterious???! Why was Kishore Kumar so phobic of his home-visiting doctors??? What kind of experiences had he had with them over time, to make him so afraid of their mere name, during his last moments???!
Questions none of us can now with any certainty answer, yet safely & privately (& oh so obviously) guess. :/
And when Kishore Kumar finally did pass away just 2 yrs after his retirement decision, while completing his huge pile of pending work, on that fateful day of  Oct 13, 1987, his friend R.D. Burman reportedly told Kishore’s son Amit at his funeral, as recounted by Amit in his video interview to Rajeev Bajaj, that it was time for him, the great R.D. Burman, to retire as well, as he knew his innings was up too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
R. D. Burman would go on to have a heart attack in the very next year of 1988, & would have a heart by-pass surgery needed to be performed on him abroad the following year in 1989, having his work-rate reduced by half for the next 5 yrs.
Another interesting publicly available post--1989 interview excerpt has also come to light, drawing further attention to his state of unease & perhaps anger. RD had always been very careful to not make hyperbolic statements about (his brother) Rajesh, most likely as instructed by the latter himself. Yet on this one occasion in 1990, made an exception, & almost purposely, gave a provocative interview about his bro being the best & all, knowing full well as an insider, how this whole silly Rajesh-Amitabh battle was a mere artificial ‘establishment media’ creation:
“Amitabh would best be remembered by historians as a 'Bollywood Legend', but Rajesh Khanna would remain a 'Permanent Superstar' for generations because of his natural charisma on and off screen. Khanna has done vast genres of films, experimented and performed many roles and also has keen interest in story, music and lyrics of songs in his films. Khanna is more versatile.”
This was an obviously angry RD deliberately hitting out the only way he knew how to, & taking “panga” with the establishment, for reasons we can perhaps now well guess.
RD would land up having his 2nd & most fatal heart attack 3.5 yrs later, on Jan 4, 1994, to eventually pass away.
Followed by a years-long media drive on how RD was unhappy & alone & doing very poor work in his final few yrs, while reality is that music stds of Hindi Cinema as a whole had gone down a few notches by the mid 80s anyway. Also that he was leading essentially the same royal life (albeit in poorer physical health)(he came from a super wealthy North-Easthern royal family btw), as also a bachelor's life since his divorce in 1971, as claimed by the musicians who worked with him (incl guitarist Vineet Shrivastava on Yt), whatever the exact truth of his marriage to Asha Bhosle, that apparently was a secret btwn him & Asha till his death, that no one really knew of, till Asha ji herself made it explicitly known to the world after his death.
P.S.:
1. Some interesting emerging tidbits herein, even if people find outta context, being how twas RD Burman, more Lata's gen, being just 9.5 yrs younger, that ended the Lata-SD cold war on since mid 1950s, by going to her house & asking her to sing his 1st song as a independent composer in 'Chhote Nawab' in 1960. The 2 never parted for next quarter century!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Further, Chaitanya Padukone's book 'RD Burmaniya' carries a Lata intv, stating how RD asked her to give him a 'counselling letter' of "Do's & Dont's" when he did marry her sis Asha at a time in 1980's, as a gift.

To then set into motion the final (as in Rajesh's case, we know for fact) project, by the unseen & unnamed & unknown powers-that-be, for total dismantling of the last & most famous of this legendary trio, Project Rajesh Khanna, as already amply blogged on before.

🍭 Twenty Questions 🍭
Tagged by @chameli ❤
1) What do you prefer to be called name-wise? SPL :)
2) When is your birthday? February 18
3) Where do you live? Canada
4) Three things you are doing right now? Working at our family shop, trying to make gifs for Juhi Week, and watching my little bro.
5) Four fandoms that have peaked your interest: SVU, Once Upon a Time, Supergirl, 9-1-1.
6) How has the pandemic been treating you? A mix of good and bad, I guess. Still looking for work and a lot of crappy/stressful stuff has been happening, but I was also in need of a break and to get creative so hopefully... I’m currently trying to pick up singing again... so keep your fingers crossed and don’t let me quit!
7) A song you can’t stop listening to right now? Soul by Celine Dion!
8) Recommend a movie. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019) [translation: How I Felt When I Saw That Girl] this movie is so beautiful and cute and the actors are all wonderful. It made me fall hard for bollywood movies, but most importantly, it introduced me to the mind-shattering Juhi Chawla. I know some people can be hesitant to watch non-English movies for various reasons, but once you open yourself to it, it really expands your world.
9) How old are you? 26
10) School, university, occupation, other? I currently work with victims on call at night every other week .
11) Do you prefer heat or cold? cold
12) Name one fact others may not know about you. the fact that of all the questions on this list, this is the one that stumps me lol uhhh... I’m needlessly stubborn when it comes to learning new things so I’m self-taught on a lot of things that would’ve been far easier if I’d used tutorials or videos etc (i.e. photoshop... I still have no idea what I’m doing but shhh)
13) Are you shy? Apparently. A relatively recent problem tbh.
14) Preferred pronouns? She/her.
15) Biggest Pet Peeves? ... does it count to say people who don’t reblog gifsets on here but save/repost/use/claim to enjoy gifs? Cause that is the worst.
16) What is your favorite "dere" type? I have no idea what that is???
17) Rate your life from 1-10, 1 being crappy and 10 being the best it could be. I wanna say like a 2 lol but I’ll go with 6, because it could be way worse probably and I wanna be optimistic.
18. What’s your main blog? This one.
19. List your side blogs and what they’re used for.

The count goes on...
I scarcely noticed it, but last evening with the publication of my write-up on Fanchon, the Cricket (1915), I hit 750 full-length film write-ups on this blog. As you may know, the write-ups are tagged “My Movie Odyssey”. You can access every single write-up via the blog’s index. Some years ago, when I was putting out these write-ups and watching movies at a faster pace than I do now, I jokingly put a target of 1,000 write-ups for myself.
As I approach nine years on this site, this blog is now three-quarters of the way to that coveted century mark, hitting baseball hall of fame numbers if that number was counted as home runs. It would not have been possible without the support - through likes, reblogs, shares, comments, and simple reading the write-ups - of my followers present and past, and of course family and friends off of tumblr. For every write-up you have interacted with, I hope you were introduced to new ideas and perspectives, the filmmaking process, and how each of those films fit (or may someday fit) in the grander context of the history of one of the youngest artforms.
I admit that, if this year-long lockdown was good for anything, it has inspired a run of some of my best write-ups here on tumblr. Very few of these were on 2020 films, as I felt sorta liberated from the pressures from watching the newest releases (who has that much money for all those streaming services?). If you’ve missed them, here are a few highlights from some of my “COVID write-ups” so to speak...
Movie Odyssey Retrospectives on the Walt Disney Animation Studios canon: A long planned-for project that never got off the ground until last spring (and thanks to a friend sharing their Disney+ account). Reviews have included Disney’s Golden Age films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937; this was write-up #700); Pinocchio (1940); Fantasia (1940); and Bambi (1942)... (1941′s Dumbo was written on a few years ago). Cinderella (1950) was published last month; this series continues hopefully this weekend with Alice in Wonderland (1951).
A Letter to Three Wives (1949): One of the finest pieces of feminist Americana I’ve ever seen, all thanks to Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s directing/writing and the stupendous performances from the three leads.
Diego Maradona (2019, United Kingdom): It is not often I feature soccer on this blog anymore. But when it comes along in the form of a write-up? I could never be more excited. This is Asif Kapadia’s documentary on the mercurial, controversial, and inflammatory late footballing genius of Diego Maradona. I wish it covered more time, but one can’t argue its effectiveness.
Ordet (1955, Denmark): As someone who was raised in a Buddhist family but was not raised with religion, I have always been fascinated by but nevertheless perplexed by narrative art that delves deeply into religious faith - especially in terms of the Abrahamic faiths (Christianity, Islam, Judaism). Probably one of my best efforts on a movie surrounding faith.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984): Epic-length gangster films are intimidating to write on. They hail from a place and time that I am very removed from - and I wish to stayed far removed from - and are so often celebratory of the “necessary” violence that they depict. Not this movie. This gangster epic is filled to the seams with regret. And I hope I conveyed that as effectively as I ever could.
Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959, India): Some of my best writing has come from write-ups of films that were deeply personal, if not fatefully biographical, for the filmmaker involved. You got that with Guru Dutt in his final film - a Bollywood box office failure but now largely considered one of the greatest examples of classic Hindi cinema. And, for those in the know, this film did pretty damn well in 2020′s MOABOS.
Tokyo Olympiad (1965, Japan): Another sports documentary? Well, this is not your typical sports documentary. This is an official film of the Olympic Games. And, other than Leni Riefenstahl’s propagandistic Olympia (1938, Germany), this is the most artistically accomplished of them all. And perhaps among the most important. I contextualize this film as essentially marking the beginning of Japan’s reintroduction to the world - perhaps not cinematically, but in the realms of politics, sport, and broader culture,
Flower Drum Song (1961): Before The Joy Luck Club (1993), the most recent film with an almost all-Asian cast was this. An adaptation of a famous Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that is never performed anymore (various reasons), it was a revelation to see so many actors of Asian descent that I had seen in bit roles in other movies or television star in this production. Even if that meant the film was not terribly culturally specific or accurate.
Wolfwalkers (2020): Another visual and thematic triumph from the folks at Cartoon Saloon in Ireland. There’s more to animation than just the major American studios and anime, as I hope many of you will learn if you haven’t already. Multinational European productions and Latin America are coming to the fore - and bringing ideas and visuals that the aforementioned American and Japanese studios could never produce.
The Cave of the Yellow Dog (2005, Mongolia): One of the gentlest films I’ve seen in the longest time. It plays like a fable, and - critically - like a lesson in learning how Mongolian nomads live without ever feeling like a university lecture. Wonderful performances from the non-professional actors, and an ideal watch for children.
Yi Yi (2000, Taiwan): A gorgeous portrait of a middle-class Taiwanese family as they navigate life’s messy current at the turn of the twentieth to twenty-first centuries. A pleasure to reflect on, however difficult actually writing this review was.
Thank you for your goodwill, support, and good humor for the first three quarters of this journey to a thousand Movie Odyssey write-ups. The fourth and final quarter begins. Onward.

38 Years Of Laawaris (22/05/1981) Laawaris is a 1981 drama film directed by Prakash Mehra. The film became known for its song "Mere Angene Mein Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai" rendered twice: the first time by a young Alka Yagnik, who earned her first Filmfare nomination as a best female playback singer, and the second time by Amitabh Bachchan. The second version became very popular due to Bachan's comedic performance in drag. The lyrics pay tribute to all kinds of wives, be they fat, tall, short, dark, or fair skinned. Even today, the song is popular among audiences. Laawaris starred Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Zeenat Aman, and Raakhee. In Urdu, "Laawaris" loosely means bastard or orphan. Although the word still has negative connotations, they are not as extreme as in English. The story revolves around an orphan who stumbles over reality in the search of his parents. The film was an "All Time Highest Earner" that year, got the highest verdict present at that time from the Trade Guide (Bollywood box office magazine), and was among those rare movies which crossed 2 Crore (200,000) per territory. There were only 13 All-time earners (Crossing 1 Crore per territory) movies till 1984, and Laawaris was among them. It earned additional Filmfare nominations for Best Actor (Amitabh Bachchan) and Best Supporting Actor (Suresh Oberoi).
